Chapter 25: Cheers To New Beginnings

The days following their submission of applications for new positions were filled with a strange kind of anticipation. Maria and Danny kept their normal routines, but a subtle tension lingered in the air. They had decided to apply for roles that would allow them to transition into a more family-friendly schedule, but the uncertainty of what might come next weighed on them. They had agreed to take the plunge, but now it was just a matter of waiting for the response.

Then, one morning, just as Danny was about to leave for the precinct, his phone buzzed with an unexpected notification.

"It's from 1PP," he muttered, glancing at Maria. His voice was thick with surprise and a hint of anxiety.

"1PP? Why would they—" Maria started but trailed off as she saw the message.

"Looks like we've been summoned," Danny said, checking the time. "We're supposed to meet Lt. Gormley and the Chief of Detectives this afternoon. Think they've got an answer for us?"

Maria's stomach fluttered. She had a feeling this wasn't going to be a casual meeting. "Maybe they just want to talk about our applications," she suggested, but even she wasn't convinced.

Danny gave her a reassuring smile, though his eyes were tense. "We'll find out soon enough."

Later that day, the two of them arrived at 1PP, their nerves buzzing as they walked through the familiar halls. It was quieter than usual, but the weight of the moment hung in the air. Danny and Maria exchanged a glance as they entered the elevator, the ride up feeling longer than it was.

When the doors opened, they were greeted by Lt. Sid Gormley, who nodded curtly as they walked in. The Chief of Detectives, a tall, imposing man with a steely demeanor, was seated at the head of the table.

"Detectives," the Chief greeted them, his voice a low rumble. "Please, have a seat."

They sat across from the two men, exchanging uneasy glances.

"First off, I want to thank you both for your applications," the Chief began. "We've reviewed your files, your performance over the years, and, of course, your partnership. You've both made quite a name for yourselves."

Maria and Danny exchanged a quick, modest glance. They'd always focused on doing their jobs well, not seeking praise. But hearing it now from the Chief felt like something altogether different.

"We're pleased to say we're impressed," Lt. Gormley added with a rare smile. "Your application packages stood out—not just for the work you've done, but for the way you've done it, together."

Danny's eyes flicked to Maria, a quiet pride in his expression. He had always known they were a good team, but hearing it from the higher-ups made it real.

The Chief of Detectives cleared his throat, shifting the conversation. "Now, let's cut to the chase. We know you both applied for new positions, and we've been reviewing how you can continue to serve the department in the future. We've come up with an offer for you."

Maria raised an eyebrow, but said nothing.

"We'd like to offer you both a unique role," Lt. Gormley continued. "A role that combines the duties of Specialized Detective Trainers for the Detective Bureau and Detective Investigators for the Office of the Chief of Detectives. We've noticed that you two have the highest solve rate of any partnership in the NYPD, and we think you could serve as a model for the next generation of detectives."

Danny blinked, trying to process the offer. "Wait, you want us to be trainers? For the whole department?"

The Chief nodded. "Yes. As part of the Detective Bureau, you'll be responsible for training and mentoring new detectives, as well as helping to lead specialized units. At the same time, you'll continue to investigate high-priority cases as investigators for the Chief of Detectives' office."

Maria felt a wave of disbelief. "You want us to be part of the leadership team for new detectives? That's a big responsibility."

"It is," Lt. Gormley agreed. "But we believe you two are more than capable. Your success in the field has proven that. You're not just good detectives—you're leaders."

The room went quiet for a moment as both Maria and Danny let the weight of the offer sink in. Danny looked at Maria, then at Gormley and the Chief. "What's the catch? I mean, I'm not complaining, but you're offering us a position with less fieldwork, more responsibility, and a pay raise. I have to ask—what's the reason behind it?"

The Chief smiled. "Because we believe that your work, your partnership, could inspire the next generation of detectives. And this role allows you to spend more time with your family while still contributing at a high level."

Maria nodded slowly, taking it all in. "That sounds… amazing, honestly. And the less fieldwork? I won't lie—it's a big plus."

"Exactly," the Chief agreed. "You'll be able to be there for your family, but you'll still be doing the kind of work that matters. We've seen your records, and frankly, no one else comes close."

Danny was quiet for a moment, his eyes distant. Finally, he spoke, his voice steady. "This would give us a chance to be there for the girls. To still do good work, but in a way that balances our careers and family life." He met Maria's eyes. "I'd miss the field. No doubt about it. But as long as I'm working with you, I'll take it."

Maria smiled, her heart swelling. "Same here. This could be a new chapter for us. And honestly, the idea of having more time for family sounds perfect."

The Chief and Lt. Gormley exchanged a look, then nodded. "We're glad to hear that," the Chief said. "Take the afternoon to think it over. We need a decision by 2pm."

Danny stood up. "We'll be back. Don't worry about it."

The two detectives left 1PP and headed to a nearby café, sitting down to discuss the offer in more detail. Maria sipped her coffee, thinking it over carefully.

"I never thought I'd hear an offer like this," she said, glancing over at Danny.

Danny smiled, resting his hand on the table. "I know. I'll miss chasing bad guys, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited about this. I can already see us working together in the office, leading training sessions. It's a new adventure."

Maria nodded, her fingers tapping on her coffee cup. "I think this would give us everything we want—time with the girls, less stress in the field, and we'll still be able to make a difference."

Danny gave her a gentle smile. "I'm in. Let's do it."

Maria grinned. "Me too."

Almost half an hour before 2pm, they returned to 1PP, where the Chief and Lt. Gormley were waiting for them. Danny and Maria stood together, their resolve clear.

"We've made our decision," Danny said.

The Chief raised an eyebrow. "And?"

"We accept," Maria said, her voice firm and sure.

Both the Chief and Lt. Gormley exchanged a look of approval before nodding. "Welcome to the team," the Chief said with a smile. "You've earned this."

———

The following Sunday, the family gathered at the Reagan household for their weekly dinner. As they all settled in, enjoying the warm atmosphere of their usual get-together, Danny and Maria sat with their girls in tow, ready to share their big news.

"We've got something to tell you all," Maria said, looking around the table.

Erin, who was sitting beside Eddie, raised an eyebrow. "What's going on?"

Danny grinned, his eyes full of excitement. "We've been offered new positions. We're going to be training the next generation of detectives at the academy and in the Detective Bureau. We're still with the department, but it's a different role."

The family erupted into cheers, clapping and congratulating them. Erin threw her arms around Maria. "You two are unstoppable! This is amazing!"

Frank, who had been quiet up until now, gave them both a proud smile. "I knew you two were headed for something special. You've always had each other's backs. This just makes sense."

Maria and Danny exchanged a look, their hearts swelling with pride.

As the evening wore on, the family enjoyed their time together. The babies cooed and laughed, and everyone took turns holding them. Danny and Maria sat back for a moment, watching their family interact, feeling grateful for everything they had.

As they all said their goodbyes and began to head out, Maria and Danny lingered in the kitchen, savoring the last few moments of peace.

"We did it," Maria whispered, leaning into Danny's side.

"We did," Danny said, kissing the top of her head. "And we're going to make it work. Together."

——

The weeks passed quickly, and soon Maria was back at work. She had regained her strength and was settling into her new role, spending time with new detectives and helping them hone their skills. Erin and Eddie teased her whenever they could, commenting on how she was looking in shape again.

"You've got me jealous," Erin said as they sat in the dressing room, waiting for Maria to try on her wedding gown for her last and final fitting before the big day. "You look amazing."

Maria laughed as she stepped into the gown, which was a mermaid style, a little off the shoulder and adorned with intricate Spanish lace. The gown hugged her curves perfectly, and she turned to look at herself in the mirror as Eddie and Erin admired the dress.

"Wow, Maria," Eddie said, his voice filled with awe. "That dress is gorgeous. You look stunning!"

Maria glanced at herself in the mirror, the delicate Spanish lace adding an elegant touch to the fitted mermaid silhouette. It was simple, yet sophisticated—a perfect reflection of her. She smiled, feeling a wave of happiness and excitement.

"It's perfect," Maria said softly, her hand brushing the lace. "I didn't think I'd find something like this, but here it is."

Erin grinned, snapping a picture with her phone. "It's going to be a showstopper on your wedding day. Danny is going to lose it when he sees you in this."

Maria chuckled and shook her head. "I can't wait to see his face. But, to be honest, I'm just excited about the whole day. It feels like everything is coming together now."

Eddie nodded, a smile on his face. "You both deserve this. After everything, it's great to see you happy, really happy."

Maria looked at Erin and Eddie, her eyes softening. "I'm glad you're both here. I can't imagine doing this without my sisters."

Erin squeezed her hand. "We've been through so much together. And this? This is just the beginning. You and Danny are going to be amazing in this next chapter of your lives."

———

A few weeks later, the day of the rehearsal dinner arrived. The family had gathered to celebrate Maria and Danny's new roles, and Frank had insisted on hosting a special dinner for them at a local restaurant. It was a warm, intimate gathering, and everyone was in high spirits.

Danny and Maria walked into the venue, hand in hand, with their twins in tow, and immediately felt the love and support surrounding them. The table was filled with laughter and chatter as the family shared stories and reminisced about the past.

"Here they are!" Henry announced with a wide grin. "The stars of the evening."

The room erupted into applause as Danny and Maria sat down, their cheeks flushed from the attention.

"Thanks, Pop," Danny said, laughing and shaking his head. "You're making it sound like we won the lottery or something."

Frank waved him off. "You did, kid. You've both worked your asses off for this. And now, look at you two—running the show. Training the new recruits. We're proud of you both."

Maria smiled at her father-in-law's words, her heart full. It was moments like this that made her appreciate the journey she and Danny had taken together. They had both worked so hard to get where they were, and now they were ready to begin a new chapter.

As the night went on, the conversation turned to future plans. Eddie raised his glass, a playful glint in his eyes. "So, are you two going to be teaching the next generation of detectives how to chase down criminals and solve cases, or are you just going to be teaching them how to look good in front of a classroom?"

Maria laughed, leaning into Danny. "Well, I think we'll have to do a little bit of both, don't you think?"

Danny chuckled, nodding. "Yeah, we've got a few lessons up our sleeves. But I'm more excited about the part where we get to still work with my beautiful bride every single day. That's what I'm looking forward to most."

Erin raised an eyebrow. "And your baby girls. I'm guessing you'll be spending more time with them, too?"

Maria smiled softly. "Definitely. I can't wait for that."

The cozy Italian restaurant buzzed with the warmth of family and friends as Danny and Maria's rehearsal dinner reached its peak. A long banquet table was lined with flickering candles and arrangements of white roses, adding an elegant charm to the intimate celebration. The food was exceptional, but it was the gathering of loved ones that made the night unforgettable.

As plates were cleared, Jaime stood, raising his glass and flashing a sheepish smile.

"Alright, everyone," he began, his voice steady but filled with emotion. "I just wanted to say a few words about Danny and Maria. You know, Danny's been my older brother and role model my entire life. I've always admired his strength, his loyalty, and his ability to keep going no matter what life throws at him. And then there's Maria—who has somehow managed to match all of that and more." He smiled at Maria. "You've brought out the best in my brother, Maria, and you've made our family stronger. Watching the two of you together has shown me what love should look like—partnership, respect, and a whole lot of laughter. So here's to you both. I can't wait to see where this next chapter takes you."

Everyone clinked their glasses, cheers ringing through the room as Jaime sat down and exchanged a knowing grin with Danny.

Next, Frank stood, his towering presence commanding attention. He cleared his throat, a rare softness in his gaze.

"I've watched both of you grow, both personally and professionally," he said. "Danny, you've always been fiercely protective, not just as a cop but as a brother, a son, and now a father. And Maria, I've seen how you've made Danny a better man, but you've also shown strength and grace that inspires everyone around you—including me. Marriage isn't always easy, but if anyone can weather the storms together, it's the two of you. I'm proud of you, and I'm honored to witness this union. Congratulations, and may your journey together be long and filled with blessings."

Danny's face was serious as he listened, his respect for his father clear in his expression. Maria leaned into Danny's shoulder, her eyes glistening with emotion as the room applauded.

Erin stood next, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Well, it wouldn't be a Reagan family gathering without me getting sappy, right?" she quipped, earning a round of laughter. "Maria, you're like the sister I never had but always wanted. You've been my sounding board, my partner in crime—sometimes literally—and one of the strongest women I know. And Danny, well, you're my big brother, and that means you'll always be the guy who gave me advice I didn't ask for but somehow needed. Together, you two are unstoppable. I'm so happy for you both, and I can't wait to celebrate tomorrow. Cheers to you!"

The clinks of glasses echoed again, Erin winking at Maria as she sat down.

Eddie was next, looking radiant as she stood. She took a breath, her emotions clearly just beneath the surface.

"Maria," Eddie began, "I still remember the first time I met you. You had this calm confidence about you that I immediately admired. Over the years, I've seen that same confidence carry you through the toughest times, both personally and professionally. And Danny—well, Danny, you're my brother-in-law and one of my best friends. I see how you look at Maria and how she looks at you, and it's clear to anyone that you're each other's everything. I couldn't be happier for you both and your beautiful little family. Here's to many more years of love and laughter!"

She raised her glass, her eyes damp with tears as everyone toasted.

Finally, Henry stood, his cane in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. The room quieted in anticipation, knowing the family patriarch's words were always profound.

"Well," Henry began, his voice warm, "I've been around long enough to know what makes a good marriage. It's not just about love, though that's important. It's about friendship, respect, and being willing to put in the work every single day. Danny and Maria, you two have all of that in spades. I've watched you grow together, and it's been a privilege. You've built something strong, something real. And I know you'll continue to build a life full of love and joy—not just for yourselves, but for those two little girls upstairs and everyone lucky enough to know you. So here's to you, my kids. May your journey together be as blessed as it is beautiful."

The applause was thunderous, and Danny and Maria couldn't stop smiling as they exchanged grateful looks with their family.

Danny stood then, raising his own glass. "Thank you all," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Maria and I wouldn't be here without the love and support of every single person in this room. You've shaped who we are, and we're grateful every day for this family. Here's to all of you—and to tomorrow!"

Maria followed, her smile bright. "And to the many more dinners, milestones, and memories we'll share as a family. We love you all!"

The night ended with hugs, laughter, and the unmistakable sense that this family, for all its quirks and challenges, was built on a foundation of love that would endure forever.
