Chapter 26: Forever and Always

The soft morning light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the luxurious penthouse Frank and Henry had rented for Danny and Maria. The city skyline stretched in the distance, a serene backdrop for the monumental day ahead. Maria stirred awake, her hand instinctively reaching out for Danny, but her fingers met only cool sheets. She sat up, her brows furrowed, until her eyes caught a note resting on the nightstand.

Good morning, my love. I didn't want to wake you—today's all about you, and you deserve a slow start. Breakfast is waiting for you in the kitchen. Enjoy it, and I'll see you at the altar. Forever and always, Danny.

Maria smiled, her heart swelling with love. She swung her legs over the bed and padded into the kitchen, where a spread of fresh croissants, fruit, and her favorite coffee greeted her. She was just about to pour herself a cup when the doorbell rang.

Erin, Eddie, Jenny (the babysitter), and a team of hair and makeup artists swept into the penthouse like a whirlwind of energy.

"Good morning, bride-to-be!" Erin called out, carrying a garment bag containing Maria's wedding gown.

Eddie followed behind with a playful grin. "Alright, let's make you look even more stunning—if that's even possible."

Maria laughed, welcoming them with hugs. "Thank you all for being here. I'm nervous, but I'm ready."

Jenny, holding the twins, chimed in. "These two have been absolute angels this morning. I think they're more excited than you are."

Maria kissed both Elena and Sophia, their tiny faces lighting up at the sight of their mom. "Mama's got a big day, my sweet girls," she whispered.

As the artists worked their magic, Erin and Eddie kept the mood light with jokes and stories.

"I still can't believe you're wearing a mermaid gown," Erin teased. "I thought you'd go for something more practical."

Maria smirked. "It's my wedding day. Practicality goes out the window. Besides, the lace is Spanish, and it reminds me of home."

Eddie admired the gown hanging nearby. "It's stunning, Maria. Danny's going to lose it when he sees you."

Maria glanced at her reflection, her nerves giving way to excitement. "I hope so. He's the one who makes me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world."

Once her hair was styled in elegant waves and her makeup perfected, Maria slipped into her gown with Erin and Eddie's help. The fitted bodice hugged her curves, the lace glinting subtly under the light.

"Wow," Erin said, her voice thick with emotion. "You look like a queen."

Maria turned to her sister-in-laws. "Thank you both—for everything. I couldn't have done this without you."

Eddie grinned. "Alright, enough sentiment. Let's get the girls dressed and get moving. You're not going to be late to your own wedding!"

—The Ceremony—

The church was a vision of elegance, filled with soft candlelight and arrangements of white roses and greenery. The pews were packed with family, friends, and fellow NYPD officers, all buzzing with anticipation.

Danny stood at the altar, his nerves masked by the confidence of his perfectly tailored suit. Jaime patted him on the back.

"You good, Danny?" Jaime asked with a grin.

Danny exhaled slowly. "I'm about to marry the love of my life. Yeah, I'm good."

The music swelled as the procession began. First, the priest, followed by Jaime and the other groomsmen, made their way down the aisle. Then came Jack and Sean, each proudly carrying one of their baby sisters. The sight of the twins in their tiny flower girl dresses drew coos from the crowd.

Finally, the doors opened, and all eyes turned to Maria. She paused for a moment, her breath catching as she saw Danny waiting for her at the altar. Her nerves melted away, replaced by an overwhelming sense of love and peace.

Danny's eyes glistened as he took in the sight of his bride. She looked radiant, her beauty enhanced by the happiness shining in her eyes. His throat tightened as emotions swirled within him.

As Maria made her way down the aisle, escorted by Frank, the room seemed to hold its breath. When she reached Danny, he took her hand, his voice barely above a whisper. "You're breathtaking."

Maria smiled, her eyes locking with his. "And you're mine."

The priest began the ceremony, his words a blend of reverence and warmth.

"Today, we gather to celebrate the union of Danny and Maria, who have shown us what true partnership and love look like. Their journey has been one of resilience, faith, and unyielding commitment."

When it came time for the vows, Danny went first.

"Maria," he began, his voice steady but filled with emotion, "you are my compass, my partner, my everything. From the moment we became partners at work, I knew there was something special about you. You challenge me, support me, and make me a better man. I promise to love you, to cherish you, and to stand by you through every storm and every sunrise. Tú eres mi amor, mi vida, mi todo. Siempre y para siempre (You are my love, my life, my everything. Always and forever.)"

Tears streamed down Maria's face as she reached for his hands.

"Danny," she said, her voice trembling with emotion, "you are my rock, my safe haven, and the love of my life. You've shown me what it means to be truly loved and truly seen. I promise to stand by you, to laugh with you, and to build a life full of love and joy. You've given me a family, a home, and a heart that is full. Te amo con todo mi corazón, hoy y siempre (I love you with all my heart, always and forever.)"

The priest smiled warmly. "With these vows exchanged, I now pronounce you husband and wife. Danny, you may kiss your bride."

Danny didn't hesitate, cupping Maria's face as he kissed her deeply. The church erupted into applause and cheers as they turned to face their family and friends, their love radiating through the room.

—The Reception—

The reception venue was a blend of elegance and warmth, with pictures of Danny and Maria's journey displayed throughout. Guests mingled, laughed, and shared stories as the newlyweds enjoyed their first dance.

Later, Sean and Jack took the microphone for their speech.

"Dad, Maria," Sean began, his voice steady. "We've seen how much you love each other and how much you love us. Maria, thank you for being the mom we didn't know we needed. You've completed our family."

Jack added, "And Dad, we're proud of you. Seeing you happy, seeing you and Maria build this life together—it means everything to us. We love you both."

The room filled with applause and tears as the boys embraced Danny and Maria.

As the late afternoon sun dipped lower in the sky, the reception at the elegant venue was in full swing. Danny, Maria, and their wedding party were in the midst of capturing memories in the form of photos. Laughter filled the air as Sean and Jack playfully posed with their baby sisters, while Erin and Eddie joked about who could strike the most ridiculous pose.

Meanwhile, Frank, dressed sharply in his tuxedo, stood near the edge of the garden terrace, keeping a watchful eye over the celebration. It wasn't long before one of his security detail discreetly approached him, leaning in to speak quietly.

"Commissioner, we have a situation across the street. Someone's been standing there for a while, looking toward the entrance. It's Carmen Baez ."

Frank's face hardened at the mention of Maria's estranged mother. He let out a slow breath. "What's she doing?"

"She hasn't tried to come closer, sir. Says she's not here to cause trouble. Claims she just wants to see Maria one last time before leaving town."

Frank glanced back toward where Danny and Maria were laughing with the photographer, their joy radiating through the garden. He nodded toward his detail. "Stay here. I'll handle it."

Frank crossed the street, his stride purposeful but not hurried. As he approached Carmen, she stood still, her hands wringing nervously. Her face, lined with years of regret, was a mixture of hope and hesitation.

"Carmen," Frank greeted, his tone firm but not unkind. "What are you doing here?"

She straightened, brushing at her coat as if it would make her appear less vulnerable. "Commissioner Reagan," she began, her voice thick with emotion.

"Frank, please," he interrupts waiving his hand.

"Right. Frank," Carmen continues, "I'm not here to cause any trouble. I just… I just wanted to see her. From a distance. That's all."

Frank studied her carefully. "How did you even know about the wedding?"

Carmen sighed, her shoulders slumping. "A family friend mentioned it. I've been asking around, but I swear I'm not here to ruin anything. I just… I've made so many mistakes, Frank. I've hurt her in ways I can never undo. But I'm leaving New York tonight, going back to Puerto Rico. I couldn't leave without seeing her one last time. Just to know she's happy."

Frank's expression softened slightly. "And what do you think this will accomplish, Carmen? You've already said you don't deserve sympathy. Do you think showing up here will change anything?"

Tears welled in her eyes, and she shook her head. "No, I know it won't. I just… I need to see her. To know that she's found peace. I won't approach her; I don't want to ruin her day. Please, just a few minutes, and then I'll go. I promise."

Frank remained silent for a long moment, his sharp gaze assessing the sincerity in her words. Finally, he nodded. "Alright. But only for a few minutes. Follow me."

Frank led Carmen through a discreet path into the garden, keeping her far enough from the celebration to avoid drawing attention. He positioned her behind a hedge where she could see the wedding party without being seen.

"There," he said, gesturing toward the gathering.

Carmen's breath caught as she saw Maria. She stood in her mermaid gown, the Spanish lace catching the light, her face glowing with happiness. Danny was at her side, holding one of the twin girls, while Maria cradled the other. They exchanged a glance that spoke volumes, their love evident in every interaction.

Carmen's hand flew to her mouth, and tears spilled down her cheeks. "She has twins," she whispered. "I didn't know."

Frank's tone was quiet but firm. "A lot has changed, Carmen. She's built a beautiful life for herself. A life you nearly destroyed."

Carmen nodded, her sobs growing heavier. "I know. And I'll regret it every day of my life. But seeing her like this… I'm so happy for her. She deserves all of it. More than I could ever give her."

Frank placed a hand on her shoulder. "It's time for you to go."

She wiped her tears and turned to him. "Thank you, Frank. For letting me see her. And for taking care of her. I know she doesn't need me anymore, but it eases my heart to know she has a family that loves her."

Frank signaled to his detail, who escorted Carmen away. Before leaving, she glanced back one last time, whispering, "Goodbye, Maria."

As Carmen disappeared from view, Frank instructed one of his detectives to confirm that she boarded her flight to Puerto Rico. Satisfied, he returned to the celebration, saying nothing of the encounter.

—The Fireworks—

As the evening descended, Danny took Maria's hand and whispered, "Come with me. I have one last surprise for you."

Maria looked at him curiously but allowed herself to be led through the crowd and onto the garden balcony. The New York skyline stretched before them, and the crisp night air carried the hum of the city.

"What are you up to, Reagan?" she teased, her smile wide.

Danny grinned. "Just watch."

The fireworks painted the night sky in shimmering cascades of gold and crimson, illuminating the faces of the guests gathered on the balcony. Danny stood a step behind Maria, watching as her eyes lit up with every burst of color. She looked radiant, her hair catching the glow of the lights, her cheeks flushed with joy. She was completely captivated, her hands resting on the balcony railing as she tilted her face toward the sky.

"You did this?" she whispered.

Danny placed a tender kiss on her cheek. "I'd do anything for you."

Danny couldn't help but stare at her, his breath catching in his throat. She was more beautiful than he had words for, and he marveled at how lucky he was. His gaze shifted momentarily to where Jaime and Eddie stood a few feet away, each of them cradling one of the twins. Elena and Sophia were bundled in tiny blankets, their wide eyes reflecting the colorful display above. Jaime rocked Elena gently, his expression soft, while Eddie held Sophia close, whispering something to her with a smile.

Danny's chest tightened with emotion. This was everything he'd ever dreamed of but never thought he'd have—his family, complete and surrounded by love. For a man who had lived so much of his life in chaos and danger, this moment felt almost surreal. His heart was full, and he silently thanked God for the blessings before him.

Stepping closer to Maria, Danny wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her back against him. She startled slightly, then relaxed into his embrace, letting her hands rest on his. Danny bent his head and placed a soft kiss on her cheek, then another just below her ear. Maria sighed contentedly, leaning into him, her head resting against his shoulder.

"Danny," she said, her voice trembling with emotion, "I don't know how you do it."

"Do what?" he murmured, his lips brushing against her temple.

"Make me fall more in love with you every single day," she whispered, her voice catching. She turned slightly to look up at him, her eyes glistening. "I didn't think it was possible to feel this way. My love for you just keeps growing."

Danny tightened his hold on her, resting his chin on her shoulder. "You don't know what you've done to me, Maria. You've made me better, in every way. I didn't think I could love like this again, and then you came into my life and turned it upside down—in the best way."

Maria chuckled softly, her tears spilling over. "What new adventures do you think are waiting for us, Danny?"

He pressed a kiss to her hair, his voice low and steady. "Whatever they are, we'll face them together. You, me, the kids. That's all I need. That's all I'll ever need."

Maria turned fully in his arms, her hands cupping his face. She kissed him softly, the noise of the fireworks and the murmurs of the guests fading away. "Forever and always, Danny."

Danny smiled, his voice thick with emotion as he rested his forehead against hers. "Forever and always, Maria."

The final fireworks exploded in the sky, casting them in a halo of light as they stood there, lost in each other. Their love was their anchor, their family their greatest treasure. And as the celebration continued around them, Danny and Maria knew this was just the beginning of a lifetime of beautiful moments together.
