Chapter Fifty-Nine: The Transcript
"You say they were scared to death?"
"Definitely. I doubt either one of them has ever been pulled over, much less questioned."
"Let me see that transcript."
Agent: Shirley, were you acquainted with Angela Bower?
Shirley Grant: Yes, we worked together at Wallace and McQuade.
A: Would you say you were close?
SG: I considered her my mentor.
A: When was the last time you were in contact with her?
SG: I left Wallace and McQuade about four years ago.
A: So you haven't spoken to her since then?
SG: I may have seen her around at industry events.
A: How about you, Jack? Did you know Angela Bower?
Jack Ballantine: No.
A: But you were aware of who she was, weren't you?
JB: Yes, she was prominent in our industry.
A: How about Tony Micelli, did you know him?
JB: No.
A: Does the name sound familiar?
JB: He's a baseball player.
A: Are you aware that he died last year?
JB: Yes.
A: Why did you answer in the present tense?
JB: I don't know. It was a simple mistake.
A: What were you doing at Rossini's Fish Market?
JB: We were buying fish to cook at home.
A: Oh, both of you were there?
SG: Yes, I was there, too.
A: There are fish markets much closer to both of your homes. Why did you go out to Brooklyn?
A: Either one of you can answer.
JB: Shirley found the name in Tony Micelli's obituary.
A: Why did you read Tony Micelli's obituary?
SG: I met a guy who told me he thought he recognized him.
A: When was this?
SG: September twentieth.
A: You remember the exact date? Why?
SG: I was at a conference for work.
A: Were you aware that Tony Micelli had died?
SG: No, I didn't even know who he was.
A: So how did you find out?
SG: It's a long story.
A: I have time.
SG: I saw in Angela Bower's obituary that she had lived in Fairfield, Connecticut. I called the library to see if they had local papers because I was curious about who the unnamed victims of the car crash were. The librarian told me that Angela and Tony and their kids used to come into the library together. She implied that all of them had died.
A: I assume you saw the picture in Rossini's Fish Market.
SG: Yes.
A: Did you speak with anyone about the family?
SG: Yes, Joe and Carmella told us that they had all come to Thanksgiving, aside from Angela's mother.
JB: Mona Robinson.
A: Did you learn anything else that might be important?
JB: Tony's father-in-law, Nick Milano, died in prison right before the crash.
A: Were you aware of a connection between Tony and Angela prior to speaking with the librarian and going to the fish market?
SG: I suspected.
A: What made you suspect?
SG: The day that that man thought he saw Tony Micelli wearing a tuxedo, I met someone who looked just like Angela Bower. She was wearing a wedding gown.
A: Did she tell you her name?
SG: She said it was Jessica.
A: Did you try to make contact with her again?
SG: Yes.
A: Tell me about that.
SG: I tried calling information in the Phoenix suburbs because she mentioned that's where she did her vow renewal.
A: Did you have her last name?
SG: I tried Milano.
A: Why Milano?
SG: That guy who thought he saw Tony Micelli said the man's name was Christopher and something Italian that started with M.
A: Why did you call the Arizona Department of Education?
SG: I saw the name Jessica Moretti on a letter at work and thought it could be her.
A: Did you talk to her?
SG: No.
A: What happened, then?
SG: I got her home address from her secretary.
A: Why?
SG: I wanted to see what city she lived in.
A: Why?
SG: So I could see if she really was with Christopher.
A: Did you?
SG: Yes, I got their phone number from directory assistance.
A: Why were you planning a trip to Phoenix, Shirley?
SG: I wanted to see whether Jessica and Christopher Moretti were really Angela Bower and Tony Micelli.
A: Jack, why were you going to Phoenix?
JB: Shirley asked me to go with her.
A: Why do you think she wanted you there?
JB: Because I know who Tony Micelli is, but nobody in the family knows me.
A: Jack, Shirley, are you aware that stalking is illegal?
JB: Yes.
SG: Yes.
A: Stalking across state lines is considered a federal crime. A felony. Do you understand?
JB: Yes.
SG: Not really.
A: You crossed from New York into Connecticut to get information on Angela Bower with the intent to stalk Jessica Moretti in Arizona, Shirley. And Jack, you are an accessory at a minimum.
JB: Do we need lawyers?
A: If you continue to engage in stalking or harassment in any way, you will be prosecuted. That includes making phone calls, asking people for information, researching publications, and especially getting on that plane to Phoenix. Do you understand?
JB: If we cease and desist, are we free to go?
A: I can't make any promises, but it's your best shot at not spending several years in prison.
SG: I can't go to jail. I'm too pretty.
JB: Um, never mind.
A: Will you be canceling your trip, or should we arrest you?
JB: Canceling.
SG: Yeah, canceling.
A: If I catch wind of either of you uttering the names of Angela Bower, Tony Micelli, Jessica Moretti, or Christopher Moretti again, I will not hesitate to bring you in.
SG: Alright.
JB: I get it.
"So, you think they're done with their little amateur sleuth project?"
"I sure hope so."
