Dodomeki and ironjaw quickly rushed down to the streets, they were observing from higher up in the city. Mitsuko immediately ordered them to gather the rest of the officers for a meeting outside of the city in the fields as soon as possible. They did as they were told. Mitsuko helped LingQi to her feet and helped her to the fields where she was ambushed. An hour later everyone was present. LingQi explained the situation as she was training before suddenly she was ambushed by Zheng Jiangs soldiers.
'Why would she betray us? She got what she wanted right?' Gyuki questioned.
'Who said she needed a reason? She's a bandit, they're not honourable warriors.' Dodomeki answered, his arms crossed.
'But why wait now? She could've waited until we left and the result would be the same.' Diamondback asked.
'Could've wanted to wait until peace lasted, give us a false sense of security before she ambushed all of us and keep the city for herself?' ironjaw responded shrugging her shoulders.
'No, this isn't right. She has almost nothing to gain from this treachery. She has her city and we expressed the fact we were leaving. It can't be about territory.' Pang Tong explained.
'Then what is it about, do you know?' Mitsuko asked. Pang Tong shook his head.
'No. Lady LingQi, are you sure they were striking at you?' Pang Tong looked towards her who gives her a confused expression.
'Yes...why? Do you believe i am deceiving you!?' LingQi's expression transformed to anger as she lurched towards the strategist. Mitsuko quickly stopped her by putting one of her serpents in front of her, ensuring she doesn't step too far.
'Hey, no one's saying that.' She stated but LingQi still looked at the strategist with scathing hatred. The very idea she would lie to her fellow officers and Mitsuko was insulting to her! How dare he say such things about her.
Pang Tong noticed this glare but was perplexed, LingQi wasn't one for such strong emotion like this.
'I meant no offence of course my lady, it is just difficult to comprehend is all. After all, if she wanted us all dead why start with you? You proved your strength in the seige, no one would approach you so carelessly. If anything they would probably kill me because i would be the easiest target.' Pang Tong explained.
'Perhaps while she was training and exhausted they saw their opportunity?' ironjaw suggested.
'Hmm possible but unlikely. Why would they keep track of her, if this was planned at all, we would've been able to spot it? With lady Ironjaw and Dodomeki being our eyes and ears in the shadows, they would've been able to spot something out of the ordinary, no?'
The group pondered this, it was true. Dodomeki and Ironjaw spent their days hiding from most of them and keeping an eye on the streets below, if there was something whispered about treachery or anything, they would've been able to detect and inform them, then again it may be possible they did miss something.
'This is true, we didn't see or hear anything out of the unusual lady Mitsuko. If we did we would've snuffed it out before this attack happened.' Dodomeki stated.
'You can't be everywhere at once though. You didn't spy on the bandit queen did you?' Diamondback enquired. Dodomeki glanced towards Diamondback.
'No, we did not.'
'Then surely there's the possibility that you would've missed it.' Diamondback stated, trying to make Dodomeki understand he's not infallible.
'I'm positive we would've been able to spot any differences in their behaviour Diamondback.' Dodomeki responded but this time each word sounded more and more guttural, expressing his clear annoyance at his fellow demon questioning his abilities.
'Maybe, if you weren't so arrogant I would believe that.' Diamondback lurched forward towards Dodomeki who in turn did the same, their faces inches apart with anger present in their eyes.
'Me arrogant? That's rich coming from you, tell me which one of us survived the cycles again without losing our head!?'
'Why you-'
' Alright enough!' Mitsuko yelled as one of her snakes protruded her longsword and slammed it onto some bark, splitting the wood into two, silencing everyone around her. Diamondback and Dodomeki sheepishly moved away while looking to the ground, almost ashamed of their actions. Mitsuko wore a frustrated expression on her face, after a few seconds where everyone was silent, she sighed heavily.
'Look, it's been a long day, none of us expected this situation to happen. It doesn't matter if someone missed it or not, the point is that it happened and we're going to deal with it problem rather than playing the blame game, ok? Pang Tong, do you happen to have any suggestions?' Mitsuko asked.
Pang Tong pondered this for a moment.
'Hmm, well there are certainly a few ways to proceed. One way would be to declare open war on her and her subordinates which I do not recommend.'
'Why not!? They are traitors and they should be dealt with.' LingQi spat out with venom in her voice. Clear hatred started to seethe.
'Because, lady LingQi we might lose a lot of soldiers and morale to the survivors.'
'Right, and the other options?'
'Forget this whole ideal and focus on reconstruction and leave the city as soon as possible. Something I also do not recommend as we are all aware of the situation and if we were to do a recruitment drive to help our cause to march down south it I feel that a couple of us might not be able to rest easy.'
'So what do you suggest?'
'Perhaps…merely discussing the matter with bandit queen, she might not be aware of the situation in which case we would need to see where the order came from. Or if there were to be any…misgivings it might be wise to diplomatically deal with the situation rather than escalating it.'
'I see, well I suppose in that case I'll have to have a chat with her first thing in the morning then.' Mitsuko declared.
'What!? Are we just going to let them get away with their betrayal?' LingQi asked. Mitsuko patience started to slip with LingQi. She appreciated the fact that she could've died while training but she has limited information to go on, she can't make an informed decision based on this, of course she part of her wants to just unleash hell but at the very least she deserves an explanation.
'No, I'm merely stating that I would like to hear her explanation before I do anything. Is that such a bad thing?' Mitsuko attempted to be calm but her voice betrayed her, revealing frustration which seemed to infuriate LingQi uncharacteristically more.
'When the answer is simple, yes!' She took a step forward, her eyes staring at Mitsuko, hatred and bloodlust was present, but Mitsuko was busy arguing with her to notice.
'It isn't so simple though is it!? What do you want me to do, rally everyone and order them to kill the very soldiers they shared a drink with not too long ago? Have the streets wash with blood when we've only just repaired most of the damage in the siege!? That isn't something I can just do so on a whim when we don't' even know why she would do such a thing, I want justice believe me LingQi. But I want it aimed at the right people! If Zheng Jiang didn't order it then I need to know who did and if she can help us find out who did. For all we know that's what they want us to do.'
'Or they're counting on us to be soft, we need to make the first move!'
'But we can't make the first move without any fucking information!'
'We have all the information we need!'
'You may do, but I don't and I can't commit to another battle unless its necessary. I don't see why you can't understand that.'
'What I don't understand is that I'm the one that forgave you for what you did to my father and stood by you ever since, but yet when I need you, you abandon me!'
'I…that isn't what this is and you know that! Tensions are running high for everyone, I can't afford to make any rash decisions right now.
'She is right lady LingQi, as hard as it may be to understand right now. Perhaps you should get some rest?' Pang Tong suggested calmly. LingQi looked around, growling softly and found everyone staring at her, most ready to interfere should she draw her blades for any reason. Pang Tong looked concerned at her newfound behaviour before looking at Mitsuko. Mitsuko reocgnised the hatred in her eyes but she only recognised something that was only visible to her. A glimmer of pain.
'Fine, I see I'm in the minority. Do what you wish but know this Mitsuko.' She took another step towards her, Mitsuko not flinching as she did, not wanting to show weakness.
'If another attempt at my life happens I will not be responsible for what happens next.' LingQi concluded before leaving the group, when she was far enough away Mitsuko sighed heavily, she did not need this shit right now. The rest of the officers looked at her expectedly, anticipating her response
'I'll talk to her later, I'll speak to Zheng Jiang in a couple of hours, Dodomeki you and Ironjaw keep an eye on her, make sure no one approaches her. She may just need some space. I can't say I wouldn't feel the same if I were in her shoes…the rest of you keep your wits about you. Don't be complacent, once I finish my meeting with Zheng Jiang I'll keep everyone updated and discuss the next course of action.' Everyone nodded in understanding as they started to retreat back to the settlement leaving Mitsuko and Pang Tong alone as she sighed again. Pang Tong looked up to Mitsuko sensing her fury and frustration.
'Do not try to be too harsh on lady LingQi my lady, I believe she has good intentions.' Pang tong stated.
'I know and I don't blame her and its not like I don't want the same thing as her but I can't exactly start another war, as I say its not like I couldn't blame her. Damnit all, it ain't the best, still did she seem…a bit too hostile? I could be looking into it too much but…I don't know something seemed off with her…even taking into the attack into account.'
'Hmm, if I had to guess it could be something to do with her transformation.' Pang Tong answered which Mitsuko looked at him with confusion.
'Transformation? What do you mean?'
'You did not know? My apologies I had thought you were informed.'
'Informed about what?'
'During the siege lady LingQi seemed to undergo a metamorphosis state, somewhat similar to yours except hers seemed to be more temporary. As the battle drawn to a close she reverted to her more human form.' Mitsuko was very surprised to hear that, she didn't expect anyone to transform like she did, especially LingQi of all people.
'Wait, so what you're trying to say? That she's a demon now?'
'I don't know, Dodomeki seemed to be surprised by it aswell, so I believe this to be a recent development. I thought she would've informed you about it earlier, hence why I didn't say anything my lady.'
'I see…well I suppose that explains that…I guess.' Mitsuko said before she kicked part of the soil in frustration.
'argh fucking hell! Why can't things to be easy for once!?' She yelled, displaying her anger. Pang Tong did not flinch.
'I think plenty of philosophers and scholars try to research that exact thing, some just merely realise it.' Pang Tong chuckled.
'In any event it may be wise to leave her be, at least for the moment. With Ironjaw and Dodomeki I'm sure she would be adequately defended to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again.'
'Good…go on ahead I'll catch up with you later.'
'Of course, my lady.' Pang Tong bowed respectfully to Mitsuko before he walked away. As he walked out of peripheral view sat on the half destroyed stump and put her serpent jaw over her forehead. She felt guilty. She didn't want LingQi to feel that way or feel betrayed and part of her wanted to go along with her but…she couldn't. Whether she liked it or not she had responsibility to her forces, to her officers…but she was also responsible for her wasn't she? She had doubts that she made the right decision or didn't know of an alternative to keep everyone happy.
Part of her knew it wouldn't matter as she already made her choice and had to follow through with it. Besides maybe Zheng Jiang will enlighten her of the situation, she hoped this is a misunderstanding.
Hours have passed since then, Congqian was up as the moon was starting to set on the horizon. He was dressed as he was ready to go about his day as Zheng Jiangs advisor, though he looked upon the moon outside of the window. He suddenly felt a chill in the air that gave him goosebumps despite there not being a breeze…he couldn't explain why but he knew who it was.
'I had a feeling you would turn up.' He didn't turn around to face Pang Tong who had emerged from the shadows without anyone else realising he was there. He chuckled at this as he took a step closer to him.
'Indeed. Then you must know why I'm here then do you not?'
'…Its about Zheng Jiang, isn't it? Whatever her plans I am not informed of them. Nor did I tell her anything…despite my desire to do so. I haven't had the chance.' Congqian admitted, not looking at Pang Tong as he spoke but instead just looking outside.
'I see. Then are you aware that an assassination attempt had been made for lady LingQi?' Pang Tong questioned attempting to gauge his reaction. He turned around genuinely shocked.
'What? An assassination attempt? Who was it?'
'Apparently it was soldiers under your ladies banner.'
'No that can't be. She wouldn't order something like that.'
'Indeed. Yet she was found covered in blood and the bodies she killed were present there in self defense. Lady LingQi is not normally the type to maliciously lie or a warrior wanting an excuse to shed blood.'
'They may have taken it upon themselves to do so but she did not order anything of the sort!' Congqian yelled. Offended by the accusation Pang Tong was making.
'I meant no offense, I do not believe this to be from your lady either…but if you did tell her it was certainly a possibility.' Pang Tong explained, Congqian looked sad yet angry with him. Now that he turned around Pang Tong could notice his facial expression was one with digust…but it didn't seem to be aimed at him directly.
'It may have been, but she has been tired as of late and does not wish to see anyone apart from her husband…why did you make me do it?'
'Do what?'
'You know full well what master strategist! Lu Zheng…didn't need to die!' Pang remained silent for a few seconds, almost as if in contemplation as he looked down at the ground.
'She did…it was not something I enjoyed but your lady did not give us much of a choice.' His voice was quiet however that just annoyed Congqian more.
'How dare you! It's because of her death that lady Zheng Jiang is the way she is now! She barely leaves the palace and practically stays in isolation!'
'Master Congqian if you keep raising your voice, other people may hear, you know.' Pang Tong stated.
'I do not care! You used me for your own agenda!'
'We used each other, you know full well without lady Mitsuko's involvement Zhang Yan would've destroyed you.'
'If it wasn't for you, he wouldn't have found our hideout in the first place!' Pang Tong shook his head.
'We both know that isn't true. He would've found you eventually. He would've starved you out. You know this. Hence why you agreed to do it. You could've not told her anything, yet you did as I wanted you to because you knew it couldn't last if your bandit queen kept isolated.'
'But she's still that way now! She's just moved to a different location.'
'Unfortunately, that is an issue for you to deal with. I only assist with the road that lady Mitsuko is taking.'
'You cold hearted hermit, who do you think you are playing with lives the way you do!?'
'A strategist. This is the reality of what we do, I am not an 'honourable' man in the sense of making sure its fair. I do the opposite, I ensure the odds are stacked in our favour and if they are not, I do what is necessary to achieve victory. If that involves deception and sacrifice I will do so. Most cannot walk the same path that we take, we are what some people may describe as a "necessary evil."' Pang Tong responded solemnly. His felt his face soften yet Congqian was still angry.
'Tch, you really are despicable, no wonder you follow one such as the demon.' Congqian replied before he closed his eyes and sighed. Before he spoke again a small tear ran down his cheek that escaped from his right eye.
'Lu Zheng was important to Lady Zheng Jiang…and yet I took that away from her. You were right, I thought this was the best way to proceed aswell. I knew we could not withstand another siege from Zhang Yan. I had thought after the invasion she would feel the fire again and lead her people…yet it feels more of the same except she does not even talk to the advisors, only her husband and her royal guard.' His voice now grew quiet aswell. Pang Tong could feel the guilt he was harbouring inside with every word he uttered.
'The fault is not yours you know.'
'I know…but I am the one who ordered her sworn sister to die. You are also complicit, but the fault is mine…lady Zheng jiang…deserves to know.' He took a step forward towards pang Tong who planted his stick into the floor.
'You do not want to do this master Congqian. You will destroy her.' Pang Tong's voice deepened almost in a threatening manner.
'I know…yet I cannot keep a hold on this guilt any longer, not all of us are like you strategist! Lady Zheng Jiang showed us a new way outside of petty banditry, she and her sisters made us all better. Yet…to repay that kindness I sanctioned her sworn sister's death. You can live with that, but I cannot. If telling her results in my execution, then so be it.' Congqian gripped his sword tighter as he took another step.
'Our ladies will be in a meeting soon to discuss this assassination attempt, I cannot allow you interfere.' Pang Tong stated, not moving and kept looking in his eyes with a cold stare. Congqian sighed.
'Then you do what you have to do and I'll do what I have to.' Congqian stated before he charged forward towards Pang Tong. He didn't move or even flinch as the sword was raised above his head and was about to struck down on his head. It stopped before it touched him as Congqian moaned in pain as he looked down to see a warrior clad in shadow stabbed in the stomach. He felt warm blood coming up from his throat that began to overflow in his mouth. Blood dripped from his mouth, his legs gave way as he crashed to his knees. He was groaning in pain as the sword remained in there before he looked towards Pang Tong and started to chuckle.
'Let this be your burden to bare. I hope the sacrifice is worth it.' He uttered his last words before he keeled on the floor. A few seconds passed before Pang Tong sighed as pool of blood surrounding Congqian began to grow.
'It was already my burden master Congqian. A shame that you could not handle yours though I do not blame you. Give my regards to lady Lu Zheng.' Pang Tong said before he turned towards the phoenix guard.
'Clean up the blood and transport the corpse to the burial ground with the others. We'll say that he was the instigator and couldn't find the body until I had another look for any familiar faces. We can say that he never liked us and did it out of his own whim. That should placate Lady Mitsuko and Lady LingQi.' The phoenix guard nodded before the form dissipated and enveloped the corpse before the dark shroud escaped through the open window, leaving no blood or any sign that anyone was there.
'You should've prolonged his suffering for betraying us like that.'
' There is no need, it would attract too much attention. Besides a stab would strengthen the illusion rather than multiple cuts if anyone were to investigate it more thoroughly.'
'Maybe, but surely he deserved it. His guilt is not our problem, he should've handled it better instead of forcing the hand of his allies.'
'You are correct though I do not blame him for that.'
'Tch, he was going to try and destroy everything you worked for. He deserved it.'
'Maybe…but either way this worked out in our favour. Not to worry, I'm sure we'll be able to acquire someone to satisfy your desires.'
'Heh, see to it that you do.'
Pang Tong left the room, leaving behind only the silent echo of betrayal.
An hour had passed, LingQi paced around her accommodations frantically, all manner of thoughts rushed into her head at once. She understood Mitsuko's reasoning and she had no idea why she said the stuff she did. She didn't know why those words were blurted out without any sort of control, but they did. She wished she could take it back but at the same time, those same feelings of anger, hatred and betrayal were coming to the forefront of the mind. She just wanted to let loose, pick up her glaives and cause chaos. She thought she was better than this, she thought she could exact complete control of herself…yet she can't. A faint whisper in the back of her mind compelled her to do exactly that. Just go out and cause chaos, feel better about herself. Exact vengeance that she is rightfully owed.
She suddenly felt the convulsions around her body and growled softly so that nobody would hear. She didn't want any of this, she didn't want to make Mitsuko feel guilty or anything she just wanted…justice. Justice that for those that would dare try to assassinate her, if Mitsuko wouldn't approve of it she would have to do it herself. LingQi couldn't control the temptation as she picked up her glaives and opened the door, though surprised to find Dodomeki and Ironjaw outside of it.
'And where do you think you're going?' Ironjaw asked slyly, already aware of what she was planning.
'A walk, that is permitted is it not? Mitsuko had not barred me from leaving did she?'
'No, but it may be wise of you to consider resting.' Dodomeki stated. LingQi scoffed at this.
'Rest? Why should I? There's enemies to that needs to be slain.' She responded sincerely. Her voice more deeper than before, anger was present in her voice.
'There are not currently. Lady Mitsuko will inform you when that time comes. In the meantime, rest. You need it.' Dodomeki sternly replied to her. This grated on her nerves.
'You are not the boss of me Dodomeki.'
'I know. But lady Mitsuko is and she ordered-'
'Why should I care!? I could've died and yet she does nothing!' She yelled. Ironjaw tilted her head inquisitively. This was not like the LingQi she fought or gotten to know a bit after the battle. She wondered…was she experiencing the same thing she was? No it can't be, it felt natural and wonderful to shed the skin of oppression.
'You speak out of turn LingQi! Dodomeki responded angrily as he grabbed her bloodstained armour and slammed her against the wall. The surprise made LingQi drop her glaives. Dodomeki was stared into LingQi's eyes and noticed that this isn't normal LingQi, her eyes started to become bright pink with rage.
'And you speak like someone who tolerates weakness!' LingQi responded as she grabbed both of Dodomeki's arms and pulled them away from her despite Dodomeki trying not to have them move. She got enough space before she kneed him in the gut before slamming him in the opposite wall. The wooden wall slightly splintering at the impact. Ironjaw quickly grabbed her by the throat with her forearm and pulled her away as Dodomeki crashed to the floor. LingQi quickly grabbed the arm and hip tossed Ironjaw over her. Ironjaw landed on her back before immediately rolling onto her feet. Only for her to be greeted with LingQi's right fist to her face which forced her to recoil her head back. LingQi went with a left hook, Ironjaw ducked and tackled her by grabbing her around her hips while ducking down and ran to the outside of the building before slamming her to the ground. Ironjaw crawled on top and wailed on LingQi, repeatedly punching her in the face for a flurry of blows.
LingQi found an opportunity and grabbed Ironjaws throat and tightened her hand around it. Ironjaw was too shocked by the sudden manoeuvre she had to grab it with one hand while grabbing her face with the other. They engaged in a power deadlock before LingQi sprouted her insect arms to Ironjaws surprise as she was punched by them, winding her. Giving LingQi a chance to throw her off to the side. Ironjaw immediately stood up as did LingQi. The two stood facing each other, both daring the other to make a move.
'I didn't think you would be the type to consider betrayal.' Ironjaw told her. LingQi looked at her with malice with bright pink eyes with the pupils slowly starting to turn slitshaped.
'I am not betraying lady Mitsuko. I'm ensuring her safety and my own! I will not allow the enemy to think of us as weak and try to take Lady Mitsuko's life. I say let's strike first! Is that such a crime? To protect your lady? She should understand this considering everything we have done! Why should I have to tolerate an attack of me because of diplomacy!?' LingQi snarled quietly.
'Do you think she wants you to exact vengeance this way? Do you think your vengeance is more important than Mitsuko's orders' LingQi paused for a moment, looking around at the vacant area of the city. A flicker of the LingQi previously was present as she looked around. She staggered backwards almost as if she realised what she was doing before closing her eyes and breathed heavily.
' Yessss.' She stretched out the word as she was saying it and got back into a battle ready stance. Opening her eyes and revealed a malicious grin. Ironjaw got into a battle-ready stance as well. LingQi was about to lunge forward and continue the fight before she felt her body going numb after what seemed to be a light tap at the back of her neck. Her body just went limp and dropped to the floor, Dodomeki was hovering over her with his left arm ready to strike as a chop. Ironjaw started to walk towards them.
'You took your time.'
'I wanted to see how well you could handle yourself a little bit is all.' Dodomeki replied as he held his wrist.
'So is she…'
'Knocked out? Yes. I hit a nerve but she won't suffer from any permeant damage or complications. She'll be alright.' Dodomeki picked up LingQi and draped her over his shoulder before turning to return to her room.
'Was she always like this?' Ironjaw asked.
'No, I'm not sure what happened to her tonight. It was…kind of like fledgeling rage all over again.'
'You ever see humans metamorphosise like she did?'
'Never. But this cycle is full of surprises.'
'I see…how fascinating. Do you think it will be a regular occurrence?' Dodomeki stopped…that was not something he thought about. If what Gyuki told her was correct than she already had her fledgeling rage…so it shouldn't have happened again. Even so, after her transformation it should've been quelled…right? Maybe it didn't happen in humans previously for a reason…maybe Orochi knew the effects and didn't use them because humans with fledgeling rage transforming into deamons would be too much to handle? Perhaps.
'I'm not sure now that you mention it. We'll need to keep an eye on her and inform lady Mitsuko.'
'Do you think that's a good idea?'
'Why not?'
'Well…considering her mental state and general thoughts when she was attacked earlier…if she learns that we told her about this it may force this incident to be repeated, you know.' Ironjaw brought up. She thought maybe it was something to do with LingQi personally. Maybe lady Mitsuko could assist with it?
'Hmm…you may have a point, well in any event it could be that she needs rest. I suppose for now we should just keep an eye and inform lady Mitsuko if there's any development.'
'Aww, you do care.' Ironjaw sniggered. Dodomeki shot her a death glare with his singular eye before he placed LingQi down in her room and walked out.
Before the sun was rising Mitsuko started to make her way to the main palace, determined to get to the bottom of this. The streets were barron, what was once filled with the wild noise of drunken comrades now was silent as they have all went to sleep, ready to start the new day. At her immediate proximity there was only the sound of her metallic boots stomping their way to the palace, the clanking of her metal armour before she stopped in front of the palace doors guarded by two of Zheng Jiangs guards wielding halberds. One was shocked to see her here, however the other surprisingly wasn't shocked and in fact she believed she was expected. But why only the one?
'I'm here to see Zheng Jiang.' She stated. One guard was about to respond however the other one stopped him. He looked at his brother in arms perplexingly before he opened the door and bowed respectfully at Mitsuko. Mitsuko wasn't sure on how to take this but she made her way inside, she would've thought she would've had to wait a while and a message was to be passed. But no they allowed her inside. As she walked inside, the doors slowly creaked until they shut behind her. She noticed on the walls the torches were lit up.
'That's odd, I would've thought she would be resting by now, what is she doing up this late?' Mitsuko thought to herself. That's the only reason why she believed the torches were lit. It was slightly unnerving, almost like…she was expected. She made her way there until she entered the main hall. When she did she was surprised to see Zheng Jiang sitting on the throne, her two axes on both sides of the throne. In front of the throne was a table with various bits of paperwork, Zheng Jiang was resting her head on her hand but she was awake. She seemed stunned to see Mitsuko arrive in the palace.
'Ahh Mitsuko, I hadn't sent for you yet, what can I do for you?' Zheng Jiang suddenly sat up straight looking intently at her which Mitsuko was perplexed by.
'I had wanted to discuss something important, one of my – wait…what do you mean you haven't sent for me yet, whats going on?' Mitsuko raised her eyebrow at her which Zheng jiang stood up and grabbed her axes and started to walk towards her. Mitsuko didn't move yet, she was unsure of what's going on.
'Yes…I had wanted to do this later when I had thought you were rested but…if you're here now then I suppose I should get right to it. There can't be two rulers of this city Mitsuko. One must go.' Zheng Jiang's threw the table in front of her to the side, scattering paperwork everywhere. Mitsuko was stunned by this.
'Wait, what are you talking about? Where did this come from? If there's any issue, I'm sure we can talk about it.' Mitsuko took a step back, trying to get her to calm down. She wasn't sure why Zheng Jiang is doing this but she thought this can be avoided by having a conversation.
'No, the time for talk is over. The people see you as their ruler, the rightful ruler is me. These mountains are mine! I fought hard and sacrificed for control of these mountains, I cannot allow you to take what is rightfully mine. Now prepare yourself.' Zheng Jiang declared as she raised her axes high with Mitsuko still trying to work out a peaceful solution.
'I don't know what is going on, but we can both walk out of here just put the weapons down…' She was interrupted by Zheng Jiang crashing an axe onto her that was barely blocked by Mitsuko. She looked at Zheng Jiang with a determined look in her eye, Mitsuko gritted her teeth as she was in a deadlock with Zheng Jiang before she pushed her away.
Zheng Jiang immediately sprung back into the fight though as she hacked and slashed at Mitsuko using her axes. Mitsuko only blocked and dodged the oncoming attacks, she didn't want to hurt Zheng Jiang. They're allies so why is she trying to kill her? What changed? She desperately wanted to get to the bottom of it and assist her. Yet despite this she was furious at this betrayal.
'What are you doing this for!? We're allies are we not? I even said you can keep this settlement, you know I'm planning to depart soon so what's the point!?' Mitsuko screeched. Her anger started to become more apparent despite her attempt at suppressing it. Zheng Jiang smirked at this as she continued her flurry of blows.
'Dominance. I told you before there can't be two rulers. With you gone the people here will have no choice but to accept me!' Zheng Jiang kicked Mitsuko in the stomach which made her stagger back before she went to attack with both axes coming from both sides. Mitsuko quickly blocked both attacks with her weapons forcing another deadlock. Mitsuko had no choice but to look at Zheng Jiang who gritted her teeth and attempted to use all her strength to push Mitsuko.
'Is that what really what all this is about? There has to be more to this, there just has to be! …wait… Is this why LingQi had an attempt on her life? To get to me!?' Mitsuko snarled, revealing her fangs as she thought about LingQi being injured just because Zheng Jiang wanted to be a selfish bitch. Zheng Jiang for a split moment looked shocked by this before smirking at her.
'Indeed. I'll deal with her after I take your head.' Zheng Jiang yelled before she broke the deadlock by leaping back before charging back in, wasting no time to initiate another strike. Mitsuko dodged the attack by twisting her body allowing Zheng Jiang to move forward using her momentum before swinging her scythe towards her, aiming at her neck. Zheng Jiang eyes widened as she barely managed to block the bloodthirsty crescent blade however the strength behind the swing was too much for Zheng Jiang to handle as she was sent flying to the ground. She rolled on the floor for a few seconds before she managed to get back up. She groaned as she felt pain surge throughout her body. She looked up to see Mitsuko staring at her, a demonic aura could be felt from her. That was the first strike she performed. Something changed just like that, Mitsuko dastardly smiled at her as she started to walk towards her. Chuckling to herself.
'You…you really shouldn't have said that to me. I was the one that stopped LingQi from slaughtering you and your people. I thought it was the best thing to do for our alliance. Despite me being a serpent I'm not one to go back on my friends…but you never were one…were you? You just used me. To think I gave her more reason to despise me…' Mitsuko paused as she looked down at the ground, regret for only a split second filled her thoughts as LingQi was correct about her betrayal. The hurt in her eyes gave her pause. Zheng jiang knew that look well, this wasn't what she wanted. She clashed her red sisters together to make a loud metallic clang. It gave Mitsuko the jolt she needed to get out of her trance before locking eyes with Zheng Jiang. Mitsuko saw…fear yet…acceptance and determination. She got back into a battle-ready stance as she put one foot behind her and both her serpent arms extended to both her sides. Ready to sprint and strike.
' Ahhh…well that can be amended. I'm sure you're head will act an appropriate apology…aswell as the corpses of your soldiers!' Mitsuko screeched before she sprinted.
She was so fast Zheng Jiang narrowly tilted her head back and sidestepped to avoid a strike from Mitsuko's sword serpent coming diagonally downwards. Her strike caused the floor's tiles to break. As she landed her strike Zheng Jiang prepared her axes overhead to strike, however raises her sword serpent high removing it from the floor to block both axes, the blade kissed the arms of the axes rather than the blades themselves, giving Mitsuko a chance to raise her scythe to crash down aiming for the top of Zheng Jiangs head.
She manoeuvred the axes to use her left axe to force the sword arm down to the ground while she raised her right axe to block the crescent blade. The necks of the blades clashed as the strike was stopped. Zheng Jiang saw the tip of the blade, bloodthirsty inching closer, almost like it had a mind of its own as she was being overpowered by Mitsuko. Mitsuko lurched her head closer while sadistically smiling wanting to exact her vengeance. Zheng Jiang managed to push the bloodthirsty crescent blade to the far-left side and remove her left axe from Mitsuko's blade as they both closed in from both sides. Mitsuko smirked as she stepped back and raised her sword serpent up. The blade still pointing downwards as the metals clashed once again, this time however Mitsuko quickly retracted the sword back in the serpents mouth allowing the axes to continue their projection across from each other. One slightly higher than the other. The free serpent jaw as the arms of the axes met clasped onto both of them.
Zheng Jiang eyes widened, she attempted to break free but it was no good. Mitsuko hissed softly as if delighted by this before she suddenly raised her serpent high in the air, Zheng Jiang wasn't prepared but kept a hold of the axes before she was slammed to the ground, releasing a groan of pain as her back bounced off the floor. The Scythe immediately followed her trying to drop down on her stomach. Zheng Jiang forced her body away to the side, narrowly avoiding the killing blow. As she forced herself away Mitsuko snarled before she threw her across the room. Zheng Jiang felt more pain surge throughout her body before she stood back up. Her legs wobbly, her movements becoming more and more sluggish. Her eyes are tired. Mitsuko licked her top lip before she walking towards her before raising her bloodthirsty crescent blade to her side and quickening her pace after taking a few steps. Zheng Jiang did the same, raising her red sisters to both of her sides. She wore the mask of stoic determination. Though when they passed each other that mask slipped for just a moment.
They stopped as they were a good distance apart. The tip of Mitsuko's scythe was coated in blood as one drop at a time it dripped to the ground. At the same time she heard the sound of Mitsuko turned around to find Zheng Jiang knelt down on one knee clutching a wound on her stomach, coating her hand in her own blood. Her red sisters on the ground beside her, resting. Mitsuko looking at this smirked as she made her way to her. Her scythe was dragged across the floor by the back of the neck. The loud metal screeches getting closer to Zheng Jiang. Mitsuko stopped for a moment as she realised she was smiling at her. Zheng Jiang reached out to Mitsuko just before she whispered something.
'The tai dominion…is now yours.' She started to fall to the round, Mitsuko almost seemingly broken from a trance realised what was happening and rushed to her side. She slid on her knees, the metallic screeching of the armour scratching against the flooring was ignored as Mitsuko held Zheng Jiang, her body draped over her knees as she held her head by opening the jaw large enough to cover the back of her head but not envelop it. She was feeling a mixture of anger, confusion and sadness for the most part.
'Before…you came along I felt lost, my ambition was extinguished…you were right…I was afraid to lose anyone else after Gai Li…but I did…I lost Lu Zheng. When I fought alongside you that day…it felt like my fire was awakening once more. Over…time…I felt it growing once again, I wanted the world to be mine once more. In vengeance and to create the world that we wanted all those years ago. Yet…you stood in my way but…I didn't want to betray you, though I know what I am like now. I would've done so. I…wanted you to stop me.' Zheng Jiang explained, her voice was raspy while taking long breaths. She coughed blood on the scales of Mitsuko's serpents. Mitsuko couldn't believe what she was hearing.
'What are you talking about!? You agreed to this alliance, why…why couldn't you be a part of my journey? I want to change the world too, don't you see we wanted the same thing!' Mitsuko shouted at her, Zheng Jiang weakly chuckled.
'Could you do it then?'
'Do what?'
'Compromise your vision for this world?' Mitsuko gasped and was going to say something but then she thought about it for a second. She knew her vision was different from most warlords because of her experiences and the future it will bring. It's the reason why she started all this after all…could she do it? Could she compromise her vision for a true alliance?
'Heh, it's a tricky choice isn't it? I figured out after the battle…that I couldn't…even if I knew it was wrong to feel that way. We…are both women born of this world. We both know how…cruel it is. We were strengthened by it, even if we wanted the same thing, our visions were different and we are both leaders. An alliance between the two of us…or even with others who have the strength to lead is only temporary. Only one of us could've changed the world…and you were the better woman. You didn't stray from your path…I did.'
'That…that wasn't your fault! You didn't know what to do, no one blamed you for feeling what you felt after Gai Li died. Its human nature to let fear control us like that. Don't blame yourself for being human.' Mitsuko quickly responded to her. She knew all too well how painful it was to lose someone you loved.
'You're wrong…I did stray…it was only with help that I managed to get back on the right path. Please, don't think its your fault.' Mitsuko attempted to comfort Zheng Jiang in her last moments. Her breathing started to become slower after she weakly laughed.
'You are kind to say that Mitsuko…but I strayed too far. I didn't get help…or rather I didn't accept it until it was too late.'
'Its not too late, we can still get you medical aid, we can…' Zheng Jiang shook her head, gritting her blood-soaked teeth with some dripping from the side of her mouth as she groaned.
'No…this needs to happen, you know this. Even if I get healed, I'll always plot behind your back…and I can't do that to you.'
'If that's true…then why did you send someone to kill LingQi? What was that about?'
'I didn't…I'm sorry I deceived you there, I needed you to be angry and I thought that was the best way…but I didn't order any assassination. I told those in my inner circle to leave you alone if you win, to serve you and to tell everyone that if I died…they would serve you. There may have been…dissenters but I never…never thought that they'd do anything like that. I'm sorry for that.' The coughing began to get more violent with more blood droplets escaping. Mitsuko struggled to help keep a hold of Zheng Jiang. At least she now knew she didn't send the assassins but then who did is the question. Though now, she wanted to do all she could to persuade Zheng Jiang to live, she didn't know why she was a traitor after she admitted so herself. Yet she couldn't help herself to want to try and keep her alive.
'I thought you said that you didn't want to be a footnote, that you wanted to make sure that you left your mark in history.'
'Hehe...If it's a footnote in your conquest…then I suppose that'll do.' Zheng Jiang mustered up the strength that she had left and grabbed Mitsuko's collar and pulled her down slightly.
'Listen…I cannot trust Gai Shu to…to raise Hui-meng…but I trust you. When you leave…please take her.'
'What!? Are you mad!? She's your daughter, she's Gai shu's daughter…I have no experience at being a mother, I wouldn't even know what to do! I…I…' Zheng Jiang's violent cough interrupted her.
'I know…I know…I wouldn't ask this of you if I could see another way. Listen…the way Gai Shu left us all those years ago…It scarred us all when we realised, he wasn't coming back…as much as I hated him for running away…I realise now that I was the same. I ran away from Zhang Yan after Gai Li's murder…and it didn't stop Lu Zheng's death either. Unlike me, you kept on persevering, you accepted help. Hui-meng…can learn a lot from you…more than she can with…us.' Zheng Jiang coughed violently, causing more blood to spill from her mouth with splatters of it staining the scales of mitsuko's left serpent. Mitsuko closed her eyes as she started to accept the fate that Zheng Jiang gave herself.
'I have one last request if you would hear me out. I know I don't deserve it…but I would appreciate it all the same.'
'Name it.' Mitsuko responded instantly. Zheng Jiang weakly pointed to the throne that she was sitting on before Mitsuko arrived. Mitsuko knew she didn't have much time left with how much strength it took to raise her arm.
'I would like to sit on my throne one last time…I would like to feel…like a leader…to my people.' Her voice was becoming hoarse, each breath she took visibly pained her as her face cringed and winced. Mitsuko obliged her last request, wrapping her left arm under her legs and carried her bridal style towards the throne. It was a sombre moment for her, Mitsuko never thought she would have to do anything like this. It was all too much for her to fully process as of this moment. She gently placed her down onto the throne and took a couple of steps back, allowing Zheng Jiang one last look at the main hall. The muscles on her face started to look more relaxed. Her breathing became even slower and slower. For Zheng Jiang the pain started to numb, she's feeling her time is coming to an end as her vision started to get blurry. She was feeling more and more tired. Her eyelids feeling heavy.
'One more thing…advice you can say between…former friends.'
'And what's that?'
'Don't let her go…don't ever let her go, don't restrict her but don't let her go. You'll regret it…I know I did.' Mitsuko didn't know who she was talking about at first before it clicked…she looked away to the ground for a few moments. She looked back and nodded at her. Understanding her last message…as friends. Zheng Jiang smiled brightly for the first time in a long time. Tears started to escape her eyes as her vision was getting blurrier before she clearly saw what looked like a luscious green field, filled with many flowers and trees with the sun shining. She felt her body walking on its own she looked at the ground to check if its real. She felt a pleasant breeze brush against her face as she hears a warm, familiar voice…a voice she hasn't heard in so long. She looked up to see Gai Li and Lu Zheng, both smiling and waving at her. Beckoning her to come closer. She gladly obliged as she felt her heart feel warmth again after seeing Gai Li for so long. The guilt that she was harbouring for these years and months for the deaths of her lover and her other sworn sister evaporated.
Mitsuko was surprised to see Zheng Jiang suddenly stand up from the throne. She saw her extend her hand out and saw not the bandit queen anymore…but Zheng Jiang smiling.
'Ahh…Gai Li…its been so long…and Lu Zheng…I missed you both so much. Yes…lets go, we have so much to catch up on.' Zheng Jiang's corpse started to fall to the ground before Mitsuko rushed to catch as she started to fall down. The corpse was draped over her right serpent arm. The limbs went numb, Mitsuko took a quick glance at Zheng Jiang to confirm that she has passed on. She gently pushed the corpse back onto the throne. Mitsuko took a step back to see Zheng Jiang's eyes closed with a smile on her face, blood slowly escaping from her mouth leaving a trail on her chin. Mitsuko quickly wiped it away using her serpents head and straightened the body. The bandit queen was no more…the city and apparently her forces now belonged to Mitsuko…she was conflicted.
This was meant to be an alliance, one between two strong women of their time. She was supposed to help solidify her position in the north, they were supposed to change this world together. This self-righteous act of suicide was a betrayal to her…and to leave her own daughter in Mitsuko's care was a betrayal to Hui-meng aswell. Yet…Mitsuko understood the feeling all too well. Mitsuko was starting to feel the tears threatening to escape her eyes as well though she willed them not to as she went down on one knee and bowed her head respectfully.
'You're wrong about me. I wasn't strong. The only reason I persevered was because of the fact I felt I was too weak to even end myself. If I didn't have people who cared about me, I wouldn't be here now. You could've gotten better as well. I could've helped you move on, I could've…no I can't think like that. I may not agree with your choice…but I understand it.' Mitsuko stood up as she looked at the corpse one last time as she straightened herself.
'Leave it with me, I will continue the fight to change the world for the better. I hope you can watch the journey. Farewell…Zheng Jiang.' Mitsuko solemly stated before she turned around and walked away leaving the corpse on the throne. As she exited the sun still has not risen but light was starting to return to the land. The guards at the palace door were changed with two fresh soldiers, they were accompanied by Gai Shu and two more armed guards. He looked at her expectedly, not with distrust or anger like previous meetings with him. Mitsuko wondered for a second why they were standing here but Zheng Jiang's last words repeated themselves in her head. She held out the amulet of the dominion in front of her. Gai Shu looked down and closed his eyes, processing the information.
'Very well…inform the others.' He turned to face his two guards who bowed before proceeding with their task. Gai Shu and the other two guards took one knee and bowed to Mitsuko.
'What is your wish, lady Mitsuko?' He asked. Mitsuko was taken aback with this, she didn't expect him to be so…ready to do so without complaint. She took a deep breath before proceeding with her first order.
'Bury your former queen, make arrangements for the funeral. Let everyone mourn her, they all deserve that much.' They were all shocked that would be her first order but they were all too eager as all three of them stood up. As Gai Shu started to run past to Mitsuko she put her serpent head infront of his face, slithering in the air. The sudden appearance made him stagger back.
'Not you, we need to talk. Come take a walk with me. I promise, you'll be able to see her.' Mitsuko softened her voice. Aware of the fact that he lost his wife, she would try to not provoke him no matter her personal feelings on him from their past meetings. Gai Shu looked at Mitsuko before facing the doors before sighing.
'Yes, my lady. Lead the way.' She led him away from the palace, Gai Shu couldn't help but glance back at the palace where his dead wife was. Sorrow started to fill his heart as he started to drag behind Mitsuko.
'C'mon, this way.' Mitsuko called out as soon as he did, Gai Shu immediately caught up with her. She led him to one of the towers along the wall and walked up the stairs to the top of the wall. The night sky was still present but was slowly being driven away by the very peaks of the sun starting to rise from the east. Gai Shu wondered why she took him here of all things as she saw Mitsuko seat herself to the right of him. In between the embrasures of the wall with her right serpent coiled around the next one.
'I'll cut to the chase, I want you in charge of the governance and military actions here.'
'What? Ar-are you sure?' Gai Shu widened his eyes as said that. Mitsuko looked at him with confusion.
'I am…why do you ask?'
'I-it's just that we…never-'
'Got along? It's hardly the first time someone didn't like me. Even if I don't like you, deposing you will not do me any favours in terms of morale with our forces. They seem to look up to you and you seem to be at least a capable leader.' Mitsuko interrupted him. It was true she didn't much care for him but she has seen how he commands the men, they do respect him. There was no need to change the status quo.
'I…thank you I, didn't expect that from you.' Mitsuko couldn't help but have a slight chuckle at that.
'Heh, did you expect me to execute you or something and call it a day?'
'I…no I merely thought that…I…maybe…' Gai Shu was flustered at this, unsure of what to say with his newfound leader.
'Take it easy, it was only a joke. Besides…I don't expect you to accept out of the kindness of your heart. No doubt you blame me for all this don't you?' There was only silence to be had, Gai Shu looked to the ground as he walked closer to the embrasures of the wall. Mitsuko took his silence as a yes.
'I don't blame you for feeling that way. So…instead of bottling it up I want you do something.' She stated as she stood up.
'And what is that?'
'Punch me.'
'What?'
'You heard me, if you're going to lead this under my banner, I don't you need you hating my existence. So, at the very least I'm giving you a free shot, no repercussion…no retaliation.' Mitsuko put her serpents behind her back and closed her eyes. Gai Shu didn't know what to do…true this was what he wanted to do…the feelings of rage at her begin to bubble once again. He thought he buried it but…at this opportunity. This serpent who he blamed for everything, the one who he is forced to serve now thanks to the promise he made to Zheng Jiang…the one who took her away…her and Lu Zheng. If she didn't appear they would still be alive! This very serpent is now giving him an opportunity for the humiliation she suffered him. He didn't want to pass this up, he brought his right arm ready for a punch. His fist clenched tightly. As he did, he saw various images of Zheng Jiang throughout her life. Various images of her being happy, sad, sorrowful, angry…his resolve weakened as his arm was starting to shake.
'Come on, I haven't got all day.' Mitsuko stated with her eyes still closed. Gai Shu arm still shaking and he gritted his teeth wanting to go through with it as he also closed his eyes. He hesitated for several seconds before he breathed a heavy sigh and released his arm.
'I…I cannot do it.' He admitted. Mitsuko was surprised as she opened her eyes.
'Why? It's what you wanted isn't it?'
'It is…you're right. I do blame you…I had a bad feeling about you from the start but Zheng Jiang accepted you right away. When she was working with you…I saw the old her…before I left. When my sister was still alive. You reinvigorated her, she would never admit it to anyone, but she liked you a lot. She always spoke highly of you, whenever anyone has a bad word to say about you in the courts she put a stop to it immediately. And you took her away…I didn't want this, but she made me swear to serve you. Harming you…despite me wanting to would be a betrayal of everything she stood for and a betrayal of her memory. I won't hurt you lady Mitsuko.' His eyes began to get watery as he fell to his knees. His face was buried in the bricks of the wall.
'I…I just want her back. I want to make amends with everyone! That's all I wanted to do…and they're all gone. I do not know what to do.' Mitsuko was surprised to see him breakdown like that. A man that was so prideful to being a wreck…she now realised how important they were to him. Mitsuko walked up as he began to sob and extended out her left serpent jaw. Gai Shu looked at her as he wiped his eyes. Her face was still stoic but they did soften a bit. He took the jaw and was brought to his feet.
'I think now we have a bit more of an understanding of each other.' Mitsuko stated, Gai Shu said nothing as he wiped away the remaining tears that were threatening to escape. Mitsuko walked back to the embrasures of the wall.
'I hope you realise, that if you don't take this opportunity to hit me now you're not going to be get the same offer again.' Mitsuko smirked.
'Tch, I'm aware…but I appreciate the offer regardless.' He replied, a small smile appearing on his face.
'Very well.' An uncomfortable silence followed between the two before Mitsuko broke it off with a question she had wanted an answer to for a while.
'Tell me…what happened to make you abandon the three of them?' His small smile immediately evaporated with a frown, the feelings of guilt once again resurfaced to his face.
'I was under the impression that she already told you.'
'Yes, but I want to hear your side to all this. You never told her what happened did you?
'I…I didn't. Her mind was already made up about me. I never meant for it to happen. It just did. If I made excuses or explained myself, she would hate me more than she did already.' Gai Shu glanced to the side, avoiding Mitsuko's gaze before she demanded it once again.
'What exactly "just happened" to do that to them?' Gai Shu could feel the piercing gaze from Mitsuko and sighed before looking at her once again, sorrow being present in his eyes.
'I enjoyed their absence. I…I was young and foolish. I grew up with them and my sister, we were always together despite the fact I had other friends because I had to look after my sister. When…when we found our families slaughtered I had to be the adult and look after them. We found an imperial patrol, we sought their assistance. I told them they'd help us save the village, they didn't want to leave but I convinced them. I thought they would help us against the yellow turbans but…nothing. They laughed and said it wasn't their business and that they had better things to do!' Mitsuko noticed Gai Shu tightened his fist in anger as the memory resurfaced.
'So without help we had to go back to the village, we had to warn them that help wasn't coming. But when we got there, everything was pillaged and razed…not a single one survived. We were only a small village, my sister, Zheng Jiang and Lu Zheng and I lost everything that day. They were inconsolable for days…so was I suppose but I had to be strong, I was the eldest. I had to look after them. Thanks to Jiang's quick thinking we smuggled our way onto a trade convoy. Heh, that was the first time since that day that my sister was well fed and laughed with an air of innocence. We couldn't help but laugh along with her despite needing to be quiet.
We managed to infiltrate the city and found our new lives…of being street rats. Despite us trying to get by, scavenging, stealing and whatever else we were…adjusting and getting used to our new way of life. We were just happy to be alive. They were anyway…I wasn't.
I didn't want that life for my sister anymore, for any of them. So when we outgrew our hideout which was a small alcove near the outskirts of the city, nestled underneath a building which we used to cover with a beige blanket to make sure no one noticed it. I said I'd try to apply for the imperial army, they were all against it, especially Li but I told them I wanted to help them the way I knew I could. If I managed to enrol and survive, I could send them part of my wages, helping them build a new life…that was the plan anyway. I thought what I was doing was for the good for everyone.
But when I got there and got enrolled. I felt…free. Sure I trained hard and it was always the plan to send them part of my wages but I started to get friends. Friends my own age, I felt…liberated from them when I was away for like a week. I was ecstatic. I sent them a few payments but overtime…I…I thought of them less and less the more time I was in the company of friends and comrades in arms. We fought and died together against yellow turban survivors, bandits and other forces that tried to rebel against the Han.'
'I suppose that included the alliance against Dong Zhuo?'
'Yes but I was stationed as a city guard at the time and escorted his majesty the emperor to his carriage before we escaped and fled. But I still didn't care, I felt good about myself…for a while. The more the days went by the more I felt I was alone, something was missing, I realised what it was…the girls. I had forgotten all about them. I didn't want to, I just…after looking after them for so long out of obligation I…I wanted to feel like my own man. Be friends with who I wanted to be friends with, to indulge in drink and other leisurely activities free without worrying for them! When I realised this, I was…I am full of guilt and left. I abandoned my post. I wanted to see them, I promised my sister I would take care of them and I didn't. I indulged myself in my freedom too much. I was selfish.
'What made you realise your selfishness?'
'…I was approached by a child, not much younger than I was. He said his mother was being attacked. I didn't care, I was drinking and enjoying myself. I pushed him away. It wasn't none of my business and I didn't start my day yet. I walked off ignoring him while he pleaded. I ignored him, I thought it was just a way to waste my time. A few hours later I found the same boy, crying over the corpse of his mother. Apparently, there was an altercation after a disagreement with her and a customer buying some of her vegetables. I could only look at the crying boy before he looked up and I never saw a child go from sadness to pure hatred immediately and calling me out. Saying I murdered her. The guards escorted him away and we located the individual in question…but it was too late. She died and…I was the cause. I realised I was the guard that refused our help to attend our village all over again. I realised I forgot about the girls, about my sister. I quickly paid for a horse and rode back to the city.
When I arrived, I went to the town hall and noticed the change of flags that the city flew. I went to the main palace and was shocked to see Zheng Jiang on the throne, along with Lu Zheng. They viewed me with confusion and contempt. I asked about my sister first and foremost before they tell me she's dead. I asked them how and they said it was my fault for being there with her. We exchanged…harsh words though deep down I knew they were right. I carry that guilt with me even to this day. I am ashamed. They were right to despise and treat me like they did.' Gai Shu shut his eyes tightly to stop any tears from escaping.
'That still doesn't explain how you married her?' Mitsuko stated simply, keeping silent for the most part as she was absorbing the story in. Taking everything into account, every time he hesitated, the quiver in his lips, the guilt in his eyes, the shame in his voice.
'I suggested it. It was months later, I had worked hard to get to my position, the training was good for something. I worked hard to keep her and her people safe. I proposed the idea when the advisors and officials were pushing that on her, I said to her if we got married then they would focus their attention on more important matters like Zhang Yan. She initially rejected my proposal, she looked enraged that I even dared to bring it up. A couple of days later she called me into her quarters and said she'll do the marriage. I was shocked to say the least, I asked her what changed her mind. She just said it wasn't my concern. I didn't argue with it because part of me was happy that she accepted my proposal…we got married and I swore that I would protect her and her dreams. I loved her after all.' The guilt overcame him as he crashed to his knees. He quietly started sobbing as he finally released his tears. Mitsuko quickly stood up and hovered one of her serpents over him however she hesitated. She thought if she did it would force him to recoil back and Mitsuko knew it was better to let these things out rather than bottling them in. She knew that from experience.
'I didn't mean for this to happen, I loved her when I saw her again…I really did. I didn't mean to abandon them. I didn't mean to for my sister to die because of my absence. I was so selfish…if I was with them I'm sure we could've went down a different path. One where they all lived. Instead…all of them hated me…and I can't blame them. I prioritised my own selfish indulgence over them. And now…they're all dead. Lu Zheng, Zheng Jiang, my sister. They're all dead because of me. And I have to live with that guilt. They should be here instead of me. Maybe…maybe it'd be better if I joined them. Then I think everyone would be better off.'
He looked up for a split second to see a serpent jaw open its mouth and lunged towards him. He was unable to counter it as it grabbed its throat but the fangs didn't penetrate his skin. He quickly grabbed the body of the snake as he's quickly lifted off the floor. His legs flailing wildly as Mitsuko holds him high in the air while he struggles for breath. He looks at her full of surprise as she looks at him, enraged at his words.
' Do you think its that easy!? Easy to go against every instinct in your body to survive!? To go through so much suffering that you go from wanting to live to wanting to end it all? It isn't! You have to be utterly broken, pushed to the brink of what you can handle and even then you have to ignore all of your basic survival instinct to commit yourself to your own death. People say its cowardice to do so but they have no idea…No idea what it is like to be pushed to the edge, when you feel so numb to the outside world that even waking up is a pain. That there is no hope that things will get better, you become a void, an empty shell of yourself!' Mitsuko snarled as she tightened the jaw around his neck. She looked at him with rage in her eyes before she closed them and breathed heavily once before she let him go. He landed on his back. He groaned before he sat up and saw Mitsuko facing the outwards of the city. Leaning on the embrasures of the wall. She looked further out and found the sun starting to peak over the horizon, chasing the night away.
'When you feel that, it's difficult to convince yourself that tomorrow will be a better day. That your suffering will one day cease. That one day…you'll be liked and loved by people despite the differences that you separate you from your colleagues.' She solemnly concluded. Gai Shu sat there in awe for a seconds before he stood up and stood next to Mitsuko.
'So it's true…you did understand her.' Mitsuko shook her head at that.
'If I did, I think she'd be here now.' The two stood in silence for a moment before Mitsuko broke it.
'I…don't think she hated you…not as much as we're led to believe.'
'What makes you say that?'
'Because you're still standing here, aren't you? If she hated you that much she'd have you executed the moment you set foot in her city would she not? She wouldn't entrust you to outlive her without decent reason. Otherwise, she'd tell me to kill you now though. Don't get me wrong, hatred was there and still present but…not enough to end your life. If you want to make it up to her, Lu Zheng and your sister…don't allow yourself to indulge in despair. Live and fight on. For that is the burden you bare now as the sole survivor. I don't think they'd forgive you if you ended it all. At least if you fight on, there's a chance you can earn forgiveness. It isn't going to be easy to be forgiven or forgive yourself but are you prepared to try? Or should I enlist the help of another?'
She was only met with silence at all for a moment as a cool breeze brushed past them as the peaking sun revealed more of itself to the land. Brightening it up.
'No, I'll fight. I'll try and make them all proud. I think…they would like that.' Gai Shu wore a sad smile as glare of the sun started to shine on him.
'Heh, I agree. There was one more thing…Zheng Jiang mentioned your daughter.' Mitsuko hesitated to bring up that awkward statement, she wasn't sure about how this conversation would go but she needed to know what the next step was.
'I will not reject her request, you're free to take her.' He responded immediately.
'What do you mean? I can't just take her away, despite our differences she's your daughter it wouldn't be right for me to just take her.'
'Thanks for considering me but her wishes are clear.'
'So, you're ok with me just taking your newborn daughter way from you?'
'Of course not!' He snapped, he took a deep breath before continuing.
'No, I'd like nothing more than to have my daughter here with me…but Zheng Jiang was right. She couldn't trust me with our child. If I ran away from my responsibilities once, who's to say that I won't do so again?' Mitsuko was starting to feel actually bad for him which is something she didn't consider could happen. She was hoping he would put up more of a fight to keep her. Give her any excuse to not take her…something about taking someones child away from their parents…didn't seem right to her. What if she asked about them? What if they resented her for it? Should she keep it a secret? But listening to Gai Shu…she knew he was broken but not shattered. He was doing what he could to not have the tears flow once more.
'But why? Why me? You both could've had anyone to do it. I know she thought I may have thought I was strong all this time…but she's wrong. I may have wanted strength, but I also had help. I don't know how to raise a child.'
'She knew that…you were the one she admired the most.' Mitsuko glanced at him with a confused look in her eyes.
'What do you mean?'
'You two were both cut from the same cloth. Strong, determined, you both have a presence about you, a presence that demanded attention. One that exuded authority. You're both intelligent, you both knew suffering. Yet you didn't let it define you no matter how weak you were or what help you had, you persevered until you became the woman you are now. She admired and envied that about you. As much as it pains me…I agree with her. I couldn't teach Hui Meng even half of what you could teach her. You can raise her to be the best woman she can be, you can assist her further than I can. I…I know I can't raise her to reach her full potential or assist her in her dreams, whatever they may be. Not the way I am now.'
'Even so, I was only strong because people helped me.'
'But you allowed them to help you, you could've rejected it but you didn't. You allowed their help otherwise you wouldn't be standing here right? I think that's a different kind of strength.' Gai Shu concluded.
Mitsuko sighed, she really didn't want to separate a family like this…but if they were sure. She looked towards the sun once more now full illuminating the city with its warm orange glow.
'Fucking hell. I really don't like this…but if you're sure…fine. I accept. I can't promise anything at all, including her survival…but if this is the choice you both made then I'll do it. I don't know when or if it will happen but if she's old enough I'll return. Give you both a chance to catchup.' Gai Shu was surprised but he was happy that potentially in the future he could see his daughter become the best version of herself. He bowed respectfully at her genuinely for the first time.
'You have my thanks…lady Mitsuko.' Mitsuko didn't know how to feel about that from him. But she appreciated the gesture.
'Heh, don't mention it. I'm going to give you your first and second orders. Cao Cao will most likely win at Guan Du and build a large power here in the north. He'll march south, my forces will head there to stop his advance once we're supplied and recruited enough soldiers. You do what you can to impede him but do not, I repeat DO NOT engage in a full-on war. You won't be able to win and it won't do us any good if you or your men engage in heroics. I know your forces have a background in banditry but I still want them to exercise caution. I want every attack and every raid to be as scattered as possible, I don't want there to be any pattern that Cao Cao or any of his strategists can determine to stop anything.
The last thing I want is this city destroyed because of negligence. Focus on impediment and scouting of his forces. Exploit any weakness if possible. I want frequent reports of his movements, positions and relative strength. I'll send you the first report with my position. Is that understood?' Mitsuko switched to being an officer quickly that it took Gai Shu off guard but he understood his assignment. He appreciated the trust that Mitsuko put in him. He won't let her or Zheng Jiang down…not again.
'Yes my lady, you can count on me. But…what's the second order?'
'That was the second order. The first is help organise the funeral. The city deserves to mourn their queen. Go…see to your wife one last time…say your goodbyes.' Gai Shu could only nod as Mitsuko saw the tears start to form again.
'Thank you.' He whispered graciously before he sprinted towards Zheng Jiang. Leaving Mitsuko alone on the wall, the city was starting to wake up as the she saw a couple of guards also leave their post to be replaced with fresh guards. She looked out of the city towards the sun one last time, covering her eyes using her serpent to block it from blinding her.
'Well…I suppose I better round up everyone and inform them what happened.'
LingQi found herself with pain around her body as she awoke from her slumber. She groaned as she stood up from her bed and rubbed the back of her neck which seems to have a bit more lingering pain than the rest of her body. She tilted it from side to side to stretch it out slightly before she stretched out the rest of her body using various techniques. As she stretched her back backwards the memories of last night flooded back to like a tsunami. The shame and guilt consumed her as she sat on the foot of the bed, her head buried in her hands. What had happened to her to make her say that? What possessed her to just go wild on Dodomeki and Ironjaw like that? She had no reason, she understood why Mitsuko took the actions it did…so why…why did she feel compelled to slaughter? She didn't know but it frightened her. She didn't want to disobey Mitsuko's orders or commit any unnecessary killings. Yet last night she couldn't control herself, if this is going to be persistent, she needed to get it under control. Whatever "it" was. She looked at her hands and down her arm where the pulsation was first felt. If she knew what triggered it she could prevent it from happening again.
Her thoughts however were interrupted as she heard a knock on the door. The sudden sound made her jump slightly before she straightened herself up. She grabbed the door and breathed heavily before she opened the door. As she did she saw Mitsuko who visibly appeared exhausted. Its like she was up all night. Her serpent arms were down at her side rather than hovering in the air as normal.
'Mitsuko!? Are you ok, what happened?' LingQi immediately questioned, forgetting about her previous guilts and doubts for the moment. She helped usher her in her room.
'It's a pretty long story but lets say it was an eventful night, that's part of the reason why I'm here.' She says as she closes the door behind her and sat on the foot of LingQi's bed next to her. Firstly she apologised immediately for making her feel betrayed. LingQi was about to reply to that but Mitsuko asked if she can just explain the rest of this morning's events first. She began to explain the events of the night and the morning. From her quick duel with Zheng Jiang, to her conversation with Gai Shu and after a quick meeting with Pang Tong she found out that it was the advisor that instigated the attack on her as vengeance for his queen. LingQi unlike yesterday sat in silence and listened intently.
'So yeah, imagine my surprise when I found that out, apparently the body was there with the others you killed. We just missed it apparently, surprised Pang Tong went there to double check I guess but he has his sources.' Mitsuko concluded. She chuckled slightly trying to keep up a bit more of an upbeat tone.
'I see…I'm …sorry about lady Zheng Jiang, I know you wanted to help her and gain a helpful ally.' LingQi responded as she looked at the floor, she hesitated as the memories of last night and her shameful behaviour played back in her mind. Mitsuko sighed as she collapsed on the bed.
'You can say that again. I just couldn't reach her. I really thought I could, Lu Zheng wanted me to but…maybe she was just…too far gone. I couldn't help her.'
'You can't help everyone, especially if they don't want to be helped.' LingQi lied down on the bed next to her. Both lying on their back, facing each other.
'I know…I know. Its just been haven't been enough time to fully process everything I guess. Part of me keeps thinking about what I could've done differently, what I could've said to persuade her to stop. But part of me recognises she wouldn't want me to do that. I think I'll be alright, its just…a bit raw at the moment I guess.'
'Understandable given everything.'
'Yeah…again I'm sorry about last night. I don't want you to feel that I don't listen or tolerate any attacks on you I just-' LingQi silenced her as she twisted her so she was laying on her right side before she grabbed Mitsuko's left serpent open jaw and squeezed it slightly though not enough to cause any pain.
'You don't have to apologise Mitsuko, in fact I'm the one that should. I shouldn't have behaved in the way I did. I was the one in the wrong. I shouldn't have said anything about my father I know it's a sore subject for both of us.' LingQi glanced at the foot of her bed before Mitsuko twisted her body similar to LingQi to her left. She clasped her hand with her free serpent jaw gently on top and looked which made LingQi look up. She was greeted by a rather intense gaze. Something about that made LingQi feel…safe but still demanded their attention.
'Hey, you were attacked. Its only natural for you to want revenge. I never wanted to deny that, I just wanted all the facts first as I don't want anyone to regret their actions afterwards if I can help it. I know I'm not good at this ruling thing yet, its still new to me really but I promise I'll get better.'
'Don't say that, I think you're doing a good job at being our leader. It was just…at that moment I was just I suppose shocked. I never expected to be ambushed in ally territory. No matter what though, as an officer under your banner I should be able to compose myself.'
'Hey, you're only human, its fine to act human. It might be an inconvenience at the time but I don't hold it against you.'
'Only human…I am…aren't I?' LingQi thought about those words and found herself questioning what she actually is after last night's events for her.
'Well…how about we both apologise and leave it at that then eh?' Mitsuko laughed trying to move on. LingQi smiled at her.
'Hehe, I can agree to that.' She replied before she sat up on the foot of her bed. Mitsuko did the same and stood up before she started to stretch.
'As I said, we'll be focusing on recruitment in the next couple of days I'll need you and the others to oversee that and make sure they're properly equipped. I'll make sure we get resupplied.' LingQi nodded in understanding.
'As you command.'
'Good, I'll leave you all to it. I…unfortunately need to rest after such a night.' She yawned as well as her serpents which have completely dropped to her sides.
'Well…I suppose I'll leave you to it.' Mitsuko laughed awkwardly before she left leaving LingQi alone. Mitsuko wanted to go into more detail last night but she didn't want to worry LingQi more, she felt it would be too raw for her to have a conversation about her transformation. She didn't want to push a conversation if LingQi wasn't ready for it. She respected that and she closed the door as the guilt rushed back to the forefront of LingQi's mind. She spent a while battling with herself as she questioned her humanity before immediately answering them saying of course she's human. That's all she is and that's all she ever will be. Even if her father was compared to a demon on the battlefield at time that doesn't mean she is one…right?
A couple of days later, Mitsuko's officers had the army ready with the new recruits. They were making preparations to leave the city to go south. However Mitsuko made her way to the throne room, the guards bowed their heads as they let her inside, no hassle at all as they have now recognised that she is their leader now. Mitsuko nodded as they bowed their head as she was let in. She traversed through the hall in silence before she appeared in the main hall. The corpse was gone, and the blood was cleaned from the floor as well as the table and paperwork. Yet for the first time it felt…empty. It was a little surreal to be in a throne room that officially belonged to her and yet it didn't feel like it was. Maybe it was because it was too soon or maybe she needed to redecorate the room with her image. Nevertheless, it was still didn't feel like hers…she glanced around the room once before she moved deeper into the palace. She was met with a maid along with Gai Shu.
'Ahh lady Mitsuko, please follow us.' Gai Shu stated bluntly as he and his maid turned around, leading her to her destination. Mitsuko was a bit taken back by the bluntness, its almost as if he wanted to rush through this. She supposes he has a valid reason for it despite it something both he and Zheng Jiang wanted. They guided her towards one of the rooms in the palace. The maid opened the room quietly to reveal a bare room with a few hand-made toys strown out, but it was a very spartan room with a chair and a cot. Gai Shu led her inside while the maid stayed outside respectfully and closed the door. They both came to the cot to see a newborn baby sleeping with very basic clothing. Hui-Meng looked very peaceful Mitsuko noticed, not known the fate of her mother. She was very small, Mitsuko had seen children and babies before but she never saw one this close before.
Gai Shu picked her up very carefully placing his hands under her arms and gently placed her in a small wooden box with a handle. There were several layers of cloths inside so that Hui-Meng wouldn't feel too agitated and it would be as comfortable as possible for her. Gai Shu looked at her for a moment before extending the box out to Mitsuko in silence, Gai Shu wasn't looking at Mitsuko but at Hui-Meng. Mitsuko took the box as she looked at baby Hui-meng up close. Mitsuko found her kind of cute. She found her free serpent arm slithering towards Hui-Meng almost curious in nature as it hovered over her. As it got closer and closer Hui-Meng in her sleep grabbed the serpents head gently. The baby made a kind of cute sound as it slept. Mitsuko found herself smiling at it as she let her serpent arm stay very gently on top of her. She was so small and fragile Mitsuko was sort of scared that any movement would disturb or harm her in some way. She looked up at Gai Shu who wore a sad smile at Hui-Meng.
'You know…it doesn't have to be this way. It's not too late for you to take her back.' She stated.
'I know and thanks for your generosity but…we both feel this is the best way. I've…I've already said my goodbyes.' Gai Shu hesitated to speak, he found himself started to choke up on his own words. Mitsuko sighed slightly.
'I see…and you understand your orders, don't you?'
'I do lady Mitsuko, yes.' He confirmed his understanding. There was an awkward silence before them as neither one knew what to say to each other.
'Very well…I'll keep her as safe as I can.'
'That's all I can ask…farewell Lady Mitsuko…Hui-Meng.' He bowed at her. Mitsuko bowed her head aswell before she exited the room. As she closed the door behind him softly, she could hear the faint sadness of Gai Shu starting to echo. Mitsuko closed her eyes and shut the door before looking at Zheng Hui-Meng…a friend's daughter. Mitsuko never thought she'd find herself in this position where she would look after a baby. She very gently caressed the side of her face with the top of the serpent's skull.
'I don't know if I'll do a good job or not but I'll do my damndest for you Hui-Meng…that's a promise.'
A/n: I'm very sorry again for the wait but I do actually have a reason because for the last few months I was actually processing the fact that I may in fact have autism which was weirdly difficult to accept but it has helped explain myself quite a bit. So that was fun to do while work is still work. Now that I believe my autism is part of the reason why I can't churn out chapters the rate I want to…while also being kind to myself and not just burning myself out I think I can start looking at different ways to help that and my productivity in general. But yes that's the end of the …arc I guess? Hopefully it was enjoyable for you. But yeah, stay tuned for more coming soon.
