(Chapter 92: 1183: Part 4: Unknown History of House Aubin)

- Imperial Year 1183: Lone Moon: March -

Gloucester Territory over the years has had its share of tragedy and dark times. One was that there were people that believed the rumors that Count Gloucester was the one that was responsible for the death of Lord Godfrey, the former Lord of Reigan. Lorenz remained silent as the former mercenary told him what had transpired that day. He listened quietly as Ignatz and Raphael stood beside him along with Marianne and Lysithea. Cyril was with them as well, and hearing all this... Once the former mercenary finished his story, Lorenz told him to leave along with his men.

"If I ever catch you all again raiding this place or any other, I will make sure none of you ever walk again. Do I make myself clear?" Lorenz spoke coldly and the merchant scoffed but nodded.

"I have no choice. I have a wife and kid I need to take care of." The former mercenary said and Lysithea spoke.

"Wait." She said and the man raised an eyebrow, "I...think I have an idea who may be the supposed envoy." She said, many looking at her surprised, "But answer this, when were you hired to threaten the merchants?"

The mercenary thought for a moment before his eyes widened.

"During...a time of strife. The news of the Tragedy of Duscur was still going on." The man said and Lysithea chewed on her lip, "Think about another bid even before that."

"Lysithea, where are you getting at?" Lorenz said and the woman shushed him.

"Dammit! We were set up!" The mercenary said and Lysithea nodded her head gravely.

"You." Lysithea pointed at him, "Get you men, wife, and kid. I'm personally hiring you all. And no, you don't have a choice." She said and they looked at her shocked.

"Listen, kid, I d—-!"

BOOM!

A bolt of lightning suddenly struck down 15 feet away from them at a pine tree and rain suddenly came down. They watched the tree sizzle and slowly turned to look back at Lysithea. The white-haired woman huffed as she placed her left hand on her hip and pointed her staff at the mercenary. Oh, no. She is not going to let a living witness getaway. Ooooohhh nooo! This man is staying!

"It's clear to me that the one working against Count Gloucester may come after you and your company. I need you and your people as witnesses. Thus, as Lysithea von Ordelia Zoltar, you're under my watch! Is that clear?!" The woman tapped her foot impatiently and the man quickly bowed.

"YES MA'AM!" And the man bolted to go get his company.

"Whoa. If Leonie were here, she would be proud." Raphael laughed as Cyril just shook his head.

"Lysithea, why did you do that?" Lorenz said and Lysithea sighed as she crossed her arms and looked to the side.

"Emily was investigating the death of Lord Godfrey." She said as they looked at her surprised, "He was a friend of hers and she suspected his death had a foul play." And waited a moment, "She suspected that the one behind Lord Godfrey's death could be the one responsible for The Tragedy of Duscur." Lysithea explained as she let out a small huff.

"Lorenz, do we know for sure that the order came from your father?" Cyril said and Lorenz shook his head.

"I was wondering the same thing. Your father was always protective of the nobility's reputation, and it seems strange he would do something so sneaky-and so anti-merchant besides." Ignatz said as uncertainty fell on all.

"Based on what the bandit said, I suspect it was someone from our house acting alone. By the time my father realized what was happening, the culprit had vanished, along with any hope of ever sussing out their true motives. Only the mercenaries remained, and my father had no choice but to punish them." Lorenz said and Marianne spoke up.

"I don't think Count Gloucester would order such a thing." The woman said, "If what Lysithea said is true, then the ones truly responsible may be the group The Professor and the others were investigating, Those Who Slither in The Dark." She said and Cyril crossed his arms.

"Let us continue this discussion as we return to Derdriu. Standing here won't help." Lorenz said and the group nodded.

The former bandits now under Lysithea's command got their things and rode their horses alongside the group. Lorenz remained quiet throughout the whole ride back to Derdriu. A few stops were made on the way back, one being Gloucester Territory to report to his father what they had found and learned. Lorenz was at first hesitant but in the end, he told his father what he had learned as well as what Lysithea had told him. Count Gloucester at first wanted to yell at his son and call Lysithea a foolish girl, but in the end, acknowledged what his son said. With a heavy sigh, the Count muttered a thank you and told him to report what he just told him to Claude. That surprised Lorenz because his father did not like Claude but hearing this, perhaps he was finally starting to accept the man.

Days passed and soon they arrived at the gates of Derdriu where once the place felt welcoming, now stood guards and watch towers build near the gates. A guard above waved and Lorenz signaled them to open the gates to allow them to go in. In they went. The city of Derdriu was much more lively but also there was an alertness in the air. At the docks, ships arrived with merchants that had new products. There were wyvern riders and pegasus knights in the air keeping watch for any monsters that could appear. People walked around and greeted each other. But most of all, the people saw them and welcomed them back.

"Lorenz." The man turned to his left to see Lysithea looking at him, "Cyril and I are going to go back to my base. I'll see you and the others later." She said.

"Very well. Do be careful." Lorenz said and Cyril and Lysithea nodded.

"Alright, all of you! Let's go!" Cyril yelled and the two waved goodbye as they parted ways.

"I swear that woman..." Lorenz groaned as he punched the bridge of his nose and felt a gentle pat on his shoulder from Marianne.

"Lorenz, this may be difficult but I think what Lysithea is doing is right. With this, we can reveal the truth about who truly was the one responsible for the death of Lord Godfrey. Your father's name would be cleared." She said as Lorenz let out a heavy sigh.

"You are right." Lorenz muttered, "And thank you." He smiled softly, "We should return to Reigan Mannor. Claude...is going to be surprised by this development."

"He is."

[—]

"And that is what has happened." Edward said as he cracked his neck, "Amir is alive and well. The Empire had recently launched an attack that was led by Beleth. They failed and in the process, Amir was found alive." He said as Claude remained silent at his desk.

"So there's a chance..." Claude muttered and Edward knew that look in his eye and lightly smacked him on the head by rolling up his report, "Ow."

"Claude, do not be hasty. I know you want to ask questions but suddenly calling Zander and saying you know that Amir is alive is going to make him suspect you put spies in his lands. We don't need an angry Tempest King." Edward said and Claude scoffed.

Calling Zander the Tempest King just felt wrong to Claude. The archer let go of a sigh and looked at the doctor.

"So I heard someone from the Empire Resistance has come today with a message," Edward said as Claude crossed his arms.

It has been two years since Claude took over as the new leader of The Leicester Alliance. He had grown taller and was no longer the boy Edward knew. Claude wore a gold-trimmed black coat with a sash, breastplate, cravat, and armguard. Hidden under the coat's right sleeve, he wore the bracelet Alexandra gifted and under his coat, the golden deer brooch. He had become more cunning and coy, the unfortunate reality of war forcing all the former students to grow. His tricks as a schemer also evolved. Claude tapped his finger on his desk and spoke.

"Let them in," Claude said and Edward went to the door.

In came a hooded figure which caused Claude to raise an eyebrow as the doors to his office closed. The archer narrowed his eyes till the person removed their hood. He recognized the face…the orange hair as well as the smile!

"Ferdinand!" Claude stood up as Fernindad grinned and nodded, "It's been quite some time!" Ferdinand said and the archer went around his table and shook hands with him.

Ferdinand wore a red gold-trimmed coat with a small black one underneath, black pants with armor boots, and shoulder armor. His orange hair had grown a bit longer and he had it combed down.

"It's great to see you! The last time we saw each other was on the day of the academy invasion and...I heard you were on Edelgard's wanted list." Claude as Fernindad smiled wavered and the two separated.

"Yes. Unfortunately...I am still a wanted man. And as you can see," he showed his black cloak, "for obvious reasons."

"Wait. Wait, wait." Claude looked at him shocked and took a step back, "You're the Rebel Messenger?! Fernindad, since when?!" Ferdinand chuckled a bit embarrassed.

"I...am not the only one. As of now, I am Prince Chris's third in command and second right-hand man. I am a General of the rebel group of The Empire, The Black Flames." Ferdinand said as Claude looked at him shocked more so those that had just come into the office.

Lorenz, Marianne, Ignatz, and Raphael were stunned hearing Fernindad say that. It took a few seconds but the group shouted, " FERNINDAD!" Making the others turn to them.

"It's been so long!" Lorenz said and the two shook hands and hugged each other than let go, "I have been worried! We did not hear from you and the others for such a long time. I thought you were captured!" Lorenz said as shook his head.

"I apologize, my friend. And it is just like you heard, I have been busy. But it's good to see you, all of you." Ferdinand said as they nodded.

"We're glad to see you again Fernindad." Marianne smiled.

"I know this a reunion for all, but I would love to hear what has happened on your end for the past three years. Especially if, it is Chris von Hersvelg that sent you here." Claude said and everyone nodded.

They sat down and Fernindad began to explain what had transpired. First, he told them that in the first year of the war, he, Constance, Balthus, Dorothea, Christian, Olivia, along with Castor and Pollux were hiding for a long time. Then things took a turn for the worse. Ashe, Bernadetta, Petra, Caspar, and Linhardt had escaped the Empire and Ashe was framed for killing Count Gerth's general. This caused a series of events to happen. First, being that the one truly responsible nearly massacred a village to stain Ashe's name further. Later, they joined hands with Gina and Chris von Herslvelg, who was raising an army in secret to fight against Edelgard, and told them about the true enemy, Those Who Slither in the Dark, the Agarthans. That they were the cause of many tragedies around Fodlan over the years.

Claude managed to keep a pensive yet straight face as Fernindad spoke and Lysithea and Lorenz also spoke their parts about the recent bandit attack in Gloucester Territory. The first being, that there was a high possibility that Count Gloucester was framed and blamed for the death of his uncle. Lysithea made sure to have the mercenaries of that time be under her control to ensure their safety as well as witnesses because there was a possibility that someone would come and try to eliminate them. Lorenz had also spoken to them and they learned more about what happened in that event. Oh course, Emily was also brought up because she was the one that started the investigation and believed there was foul play.

But what also bothered Claude was that Christian stood beside Chris von Hersvelg. The suspicions he had that they were the same person were thrown out but Claude had a feeling it wasn't true. Fernindad was leaving something out of his report and didn't know what. For now, it's best to just listen and extended a hand to form a secret alliance between the Black Flames and Leicester.

"Oh!" Claude said, "Speaking of battle, Fernindad, when was the last time you had your relic repaired?" He said and Fernindad chuckled nervously.

"Well...it's been...three years." The lancer said and Lorenz sighed.

"I don't blame you. But you are in luck!" Lorenz said and clapped his hands, "A man who specializes in repairing relics and...unfortunately, has a foul personality, is here in the city." He said.

"Oh come on, Rensen isn't that bad." Claude said and Lysithea rolled her eyes, "I mean, the only reason he is like that is because of his Crest."

"Which makes him hostile towards the majority of us!" Lysithea said and Claude just shrugged,

"Pardon, but I never met Rensen? Who is he? I have heard of him during my time in Abyss but I never had the chance to meet him." Fernindad said and Raphael grinned.

"He's one of the best blacksmiths in all of Fodlan!"

[—-]

Claude somewhat remembered Rensen during the time the people of Remire and the other two villages were given shelter in Abyss. He remembered much Abyss had transformed and had become a place where people could live, looking almost like a city. He remembered how happy Crescent looked seeing the old underground place becoming like "its prime days" the old man would say. And of the areas repaired, there was an old blacksmith shop and the one put in charge of it was Rensen von Aubin, a former right-hand man of Alexander von Aubin.

Claude remembered hearing stories of House Aubin since he was a child. Their name even went over the borders of Fodlan and Almyra. Blacksmiths that had traveled to Fodlan in hopes of getting an apprenticeship in House Aubin to learn their arts, he remembered how they came back, dejected. For many generations, House Aubin never revealed any of their secrets of weapon forging, the power of their Crest, and also the two Hero Relics that have been passed down in their family. House Aubin in Fodlan was called The Blacksmiths of The Goddess, as well as The Blacksmith of The Royal Family. For they specialized in repairing Hero and Sacred Relics. Their ability to incorporate magic and alchemy into their forging arts was beyond anything anyone had ever seen. But they never once bragged about their skills.

But then, around 36 years ago, someone broke into House Aubin and massacred all the people. Women, children, men, and even the elderly. Only Rensen, Alexander, and Lady Alexandra survived. Lady Alexandra is Lord Alexander's mother, who Alexandra has been named after. Unfortunately, the killer was never caught. Claude remembered when his grandfather told him the story as well as his mother. The news had spread like a wildfire all over Fodlan. The Church of Serios did everything it could to help the survivors in seeking justice. To this day, even in war, Rensen searches for the ones responsible for the massacre of his family.

The blacksmith shop that was provided for Rensen remained the same except for the amount of magic and other materials no one had ever seen before. Claude spotted an alchemy table not too far as well as a particular box with a strange marking on it. The engravings on it were the color of a metallic blue and over the box, was the symbol of the Crest of Aubin. The lid was off and inside was a set of strange tools that looked like they were made of bones. Each one had the Crest symbol carved on them. Claude had never seen such strange blacksmithing tools before. Rensen was busy using a chisel on Fregekial and took out the crest stone, then made it float in the air, and cast a barrier around it.

The color in Fregekial disappeared and it no longer twitched, instead, Rensen narrowed his eyes as he studied the relic, and cursed under his breath seeing the cracks. As the rest of the group came in, they noticed Hilda was already there, with a concerned look on her face.

"So, um...How badly did it need to be repaired?" The pink-haired woman asked and flinched at the cold glare the old man was giving her.

Rensen's blue hair now had streaks of white due to his age showing, he wore glasses to help him see better, as well as he wore blacksmith clothing. On his right hand, he wore a relic that was similar to Yuri's it had a crest stone with The Crest of Aubin. House Aubin had its secrets and one of them was they possessed a fourth relic. The first is the necklace that Alexandra wore it counted as two relics become it can also turn into a scythe. The third is a recent tome that Alexandra got her hand on in 1180.

The fourth was a minor relic that Rensen created using the leftover material left from repairing relics. Emily provided him with the crest stone. The actual fourth relic was the blacksmith tools. A set that once belonged to Lord Alexander that was passed down to Alexandra and the other set that Rensen possesses. Rensen narrowed his eyes and spoke.

"Hilda, correct?" Hilda nodded nervously, "Did you...ever yourself tried to repair this relic?"

"Well..." Hilda figured and looked to the side, "I might have...tried to restore it myself in the past l...but that was because we were on a mission and my relic was on the verge of cracking and needed emergency repair!" Hilda quickly said, "Was I..not supposed to?"

"Hmmm..." Rensen hummed and held his chin as he looked down at the relic and Hilda held her breath, "You...did a job."

"Huh?" Hilda blinked multiple times as the man nodded.

"You did well." He crossed his arms and looked at her, "You were quick to analyze the state of your relic and in that urgent moment, you were able to pinpoint the weak points and fix them." He said as Hilda kept blinking, "Have you repaired any other weapons in the past?"

"Yes." Hilda again shifted nervously, "Do you have them with you?" He asked and Hilda nodded.

With a wave of her hand, she summoned a short axe, a bolt axe, Aura knuckles, and lastly killer knuckles. Rensen came up and carefully studied each one.

"Hmm...Hmm..." he said as he picked up each one carefully and Hilda was holding her breath each time because all those weapons were hers.

The group that had just come in was very weary of Hilda's choices of weapons. Rensen put down the final one and looked at Hilda.

"Young lady, would like to be my apprentice?"

"W-What?!" Hilda squeaked, "T-This a joke, right?"

"I do not joke." Rensen said firmly, "I am serious. I analyzed each weapon carefully and you have a knack for blacksmithing. The skills you showed in repairing these are impressive. Not many can do what you did in such stressful situations. That is why I am giving you an offer." He said and Hilda gulped, as she looked down at her weapons.

"Is...is it okay if I think about it?" she said and Rensen nodded.

"Now, who else is here?" Rensen said and turned to look to the door where everyone was standing there.

"How long how you all been there?!" Hilda yelled, "And Fernindad! It's been so long!" Hilda quickly ran up to the man and hugged him and he hugged her back, "Look at you! You've grown so much!" She grinned.

"Thank you! I am glad to see you as well!" Fernindad chuckled but the "Ahem!" Rensen made everyone look at the older man.

"Save your talks for later. Why have you all come?" He said and Claude coughed.

"Apologies, Rensen. We're here to get our relics repaired. And we have a friend," Claude pointed at Fernindad, "in desperate need of it." He said and Fernindad was careful as he walked up.

"Good evening, Lord Rensen. My name is—-"

"I know who you are." Rensen sighed, "I've seen you in my God-Daughter's seminars. Alexandra praised you for your talent in the lance. She was impressed." He said and Fernindad beamed but also smiled sadly, "Now, what relic of yours needs to be repaired?"

"Of course." Fernindad nodded and waved his hand, carefully placing a shield with a gold appearance and lion's head engraved on it, "Huh. Ochain Sheild." Rensen said.

"You know of my family's relic?" Fernindad said as Rensen nodded.

"I do. House Aubin, since its founding during The War of Heroes, we were taught how to repair all hero and sacred relics at the age of 12 when we start our journey in learning the blacksmith arts. We also learn the history of each relic and what they are made of." He explained as he went to the other table to pick up another chisel.

"This relic was forged by Saint Indech for Saint Cichol. But it was given to Wilhelm Paul Hersvelg by Saint Serios. Soon, Wilhelm gave the relic to Roland Ages Aegir, who was his right-hand man. Since then, the relic was passed on to the next head of House Aegir, proof of their loyalty to the people of The Empire." Rensen said as Fernindad smiled bitterly looking at the relic.

"I must ask...the last I heard of this relic was that it was in the hands of your father, Ludwig von Aegir. How did you get your hands on it?" He asked and Fernindad sighed as he looked away.

"I...stole it."

"What?" Everyone but Rensen was surprised.

"I...before Edelgard declared war, I was gathering evidence of my father's corruption. I wanted a fair trial to punish and condemned him for his crimes. During that time, with the help of The Fourth prince, I was able to sneak back into my home and I stole this. I couldn't just leave it...and I know Edelgard would have it locked away or have another use for it." Fernindad explained as the group looked at him sadly, "It's not my proudest moment..."

"There is nothing to be ashamed of." Rensen said and Fernindad looked at him surprised, "I can tell, you wish to create a better future for your nation, for your people. And that's exactly why Wilhelm entrusted the Ochain Sheild to your house. Your father may be a corrupted man but you are not. You care for your people and would do anything to protect them. So, don't be ashamed. Use this shield proudly." Rensen said and Fernindad nodded, trying to hold back tears.

"Thank you."

"No problem. Now, the rest of you!" Everyone flinched, "Relics and weapons, here, now!" The man pointed to the table and everyone did just that.

One by one they placed their relics and in Ignatz, Raphael, Cyril, and Marianne's case, two bows, an axe, and a Phantom tome, all placed on the tables.

"You all can go. I'll have these ready in three days." He said and turned back to his forge but Claude spoke up.

"So, um...Rensen, I was wondering if maybe...you could give us a history lesson on each of our relics?" Rensen looked at Claude coldly, "It never hurts to know more about our weapons."

"Hmm..." Rensen narrowed his eyes and Claude felt he was being picked apart by his gaze alone, "Failnaught was a relic said to be forged from a star that fell from the sky." The man began and the group went to sit down so they could all listen.

"Having stone from stars and blood of wind, The Goddess used her power to forge a bow that could tear through the heavens and call forth the stars to rain down hell on their enemies, she bestowed Failnught to Roman Reigan. And it's...also the very weapon that killed Lady Cirina..." Rensen said and gritted his teeth, "Reigan could call upon the winds and they would answer his call. A master of the skies and a wyvern tamer. It is said that his wyvern was the same breed as Falco. Ah, I never did mention what breed that giant wyvern is. He is called, a Fernyiges, which in Sreng and Ferox means, Lord of Dragons." He said and smiled slightly.

House Aubin and House Reigan did not get along. Mainly due to House Aubin's curse that causes those with the Crest of Aubin to show extreme hostility to those of House Reigan. But also, because they were the descendants that killed the original bearer founder of House Aubin.

During the War of Heroes, Cirina created House Aubin in honor of her father. She later passed down her knowledge in the arts of blacksmithing and power to the head of the Ice Tribe of that time, a woman named Ui. Soon, the ice tribe spilt and those that stayed loyal to Cirina became part of House Aubin, while the other tribes went to remain secluded in the Northern Mountains in what today is known as the Fraldarius Mountains.

There was also a story that Cirina bound her soul to her crest so that the descendants of House Aubin would seek revenge on those that wronged her. Somehow, the story was confirmed in a way. Alexandra showed that hostility as a child, and Lord Alexander, and Rensen suffered through it as well. But lately, that hostility had been becoming worse for some reason, even Rensen couldn't understand why. It's why he has maintained his distance lately from everyone, including Jeralt. He had arrived last week at The Alliance because Claude had asked and paid for him to come and repair their relics.

"Rensen, I brought-oh! Hello everyone! It's been a while!" Manuela grinned as she walked into the shop.

Manuela had decided to stay in The Alliance since she left Garreg Mach. She had been working as a medic for the army as well as taking care of war orphans. And once in a while, she would give singing lessons to young men and women she saw talent in. Especially the dancers and songstresses of the army. Manuela had currently brought lunch for the blacksmith.

"Fernindad, look at you!" Another hug, "It's good to see you! How is Dorothea these days?"

"She is doing well! She does miss you. Speaking of her, she asked me to deliver this to you." He reached into his coat and took out a small pile of letters tied up, "it's letters from her, Pollux, and Constance. They miss you." He said as Manuela smiled fondly.

"I'll be sure to write to them!" Manuela sang and turned to look back at Rensen, "And you! Get that scowl off your face!"

"I'm more surprised you aren't drunk after getting in a fight with Hanneman on the crystal ball again." He said as the woman huffed and went to place the lunch box on a different table.

"Oh, enough of that! What happens between and Hanneman is none of your business." She said and Rensen just sighed, "By the way, what were you all talking about?"

"Lord Rensen was telling us about the history of our relics," Lorenz said as Manuela looked intrigued by the subject.

"By the way, you said that it was Saint Indech that forged my shield. I thought it was Saint Macuil." Fernindad said and Rensen shook his head.

"It's difficult." Rensen said as he said thank you to Manuela for the food and picked up a sandwich, "Saint Indech indeed was the one that created Sacred Relics. Saint Macuil was the one that infused magic into them. Both men then passed down their arts to Cirina, who eventually created The Aubin Forging Arts, by combining blacksmithing, alchemy, and magic. She was inspired by people that came from beyond Fodlan. She taught her forging arts to Ui and her tribe, and soon House Aubin was formed." Rensen said and took a bite of the sandwich he picked.

"Ui held a deep anger towards Saint Serios. Cirina's three other generals as well as. All four refused to be part of the Empire and went their separate ways. Ui and Badlr left for the north, where they helped Connor Blaiddyd rebuild it and established their houses there. Hades left Fodlan and founded House Illac which once served The Almyran Royal Family. Last, Vernata lost her life in The War of Heroes against Anacharis but her children left Fodlan with Hades, their fates are unknown." He sighed, "Though House Aubin is not part of The Clans, we were under the contract of the Church of Serios to never speak of the past. Another reason why Lady Ui held a deep hatred towards Saint Serios, is because they stained the name of her friend who did everything to protect those she loved." Another sigh escaped his lips.

"We...didn't know any of this." Hilda whispered and Rensen remained silent, "Did...Alexandra know this?"

"Her father is no longer here. It was only natural I showed her and passed down our secrets and knowledge to her. After Arisa and Jeralt saved her from Cornelia, I chose to follow them. I taught everything I know to Alexandra. I even offered the boy Yuri to teach him The Aubin Arts. A pity he declined. Of Ui's bloodline, only I and Alexandra remain." He said and finished his meal.

"Wait, there are two bloodlines of The Crest of Aubin?" Manuela said and Rensen nodded.

"Yes. Lady Ui's bloodline that House Aubin comes from. As for Yuri, I suspect he comes from Saint Aubin's bloodline. Saint Aubin's true name was Harold, but they later took on his Master's name. His master was Cirina's father. Harold's bloodline does not suffer the effects that we of House Aubin do but they possess the same magical abilities as us. If Yuri would have taken my apprenticeship, no doubt in my mind he and Alexandra would have surpassed Alexander and his mother. Yuri could very well earn himself the name of Lord of Everlasting Frost. Alexandra would have taken the name, Lord of Eternal Winter." Rensen explained as they looked at him surprised.

"This is so much to take in..." Lorenz said, "Lord Rensen, did you have any other apprentices in the past?"

"I did. Alexander as well. They were all killed by the woman that wears Cornelia's skin." Rensen smiled bitterly, "The young man Dedue and Sadi, they had become my apprentices for the remainder of the academic year. They were fine young people, the blood of blacksmiths truly ran in their veins. I wish they had lived so I could see their talent boom." He smiled sadly at the fond memories of the two siblings.

"What was Cornelia like before...the change?"

"That I can answer." Manuela said and let go of a heavy sigh, "She was a scholar of the Empire. Am an ambiguous woman who wanted to create things. She was a kind woman and a workaholic. She loved the arts: music, and dance, and she had a hobby of creating cosmetics. She studied medicine and had just become a Holy Magus when King Lambert had appointed her to put her knowledge to use. The number is given top priority to improving Fhirdiad's infrastructure." Manuela said and Rensen nodded.

"Alexander and Cornelia met in the academy. Having seen this as an opportunity, Cornelia's father offered his daughter to marry Alexander. Lady Alexandra was against it at first but seeing how in love her son and Cornelia were, she accepted. The two married after they graduated. I still remember how close they were." Manuela sighed.

"Oh, Alexander has whipped alright. The man wouldn't stop talking about his wife the same way Lambert wouldn't shut up about Durandal." Rensen scoffed and Manuela glared.

"Oh, you! You're just jealous because you never got yourself a partner!" Manuela said and Rensen rolled his eyes.

"Then what changed?" Claude said and Rensen looked down to the ground.

"Unfortunately I can't tell you the details but I can tell you that the real Cornelia was killed and the woman that took over Fhirdiad, killed her and used magic to take on her apprentice." Rensen said, "Sigh..." the man covered his mouth, "Now I have one more I need to avenge..."

"...We should change the subject." Rensen muttered, "Lamenting over the past will do nothing." He said and turned back to them, "Hilda, think about my offer, I promise, you won't regret it." He smiled softly and turned back to his work.

[—-]

"Today was interesting." Claude said as the group walked together as Manuela had stayed behind with Rensen, "Is it me, or are Rensen and Manuela...close?"

"Not in that sense." Hilda raised an eyebrow at him, "Rensen is friends with Manuela and Hanneman. Robert as well. They've been writing to each other during these past years." She said sighed, "Still...what we learned today..."

Fernindad looked at them worried and was debating if he should speak or not.

"I know...this is sudden but...there is...another reason why I came." Fernindad said, causing a raise of eyebrows, "Not here."

[—-]

"So, what did you want to say," Claude said as the group all went back to Reigan manner.

"Well...we may have found a clue to where Alexandra may be," Fernindad said and silence fell.

"Are you serious?" Raphael said, "You guys figured out where?"

"Not exactly..." Fernindad said, "I believe you all know of The Frost Forest?"

"I do." Marianne said, "House Edmund has been keeping people from entering the forest since its founding. It is said that Maurice was the protector of it before he disappeared." She said carefully, "But, what does the forest have to do with this?"

"There have been reports of a black wyvern chasing out anyone that dared enter the woods. And not just any wyvern," Fernindad said, "a giant wyvern. And there is only one giant wyvern we all know."

"Falco." Claude whispered, "I see...so this is why Chris von Hersvelg sent you. An alliance to be formed between us should the information you just have proved to be true." He said and the man nodded.

"But, normal humans can't enter the forest." Lorenz said, "Unfortunately, even if we do check this, Ignatz, Cyril, Boey, Silque, and Raphael will have to stay behind due to the high magic concentration in the place." He said and the others nodded.

"Well, even if we can't go, we can help you guys out." Ignatz said, "The Frost Forest is even colder than Faerghus, so we'll have clothing and equipment ready for you all."

"Wait, who is actually going? We can't all leave!" Hilda said, "And it takes two weeks for us to get to Edmund territory!"

"10 hours if we fly." Claude said suddenly, "As for who is staying, I think we should have another adult comes with us. Someone familiar with The Frost Forest." Claude said and everyone looked at each other and then at him, "What?"

"Umm...that would mean, Rensen."

Claude chuckled but he saw they were all very serious, and realized, they were right.

"Dammit."

"The Frost Forest." Rensen huffed as he crossed his arms, "It is the resting place where Cirina crashed after freezing the north. It also where members of House Aubin who would turn 15 would go for their coming of age ceremony. I haven't been there since I took Alexandra for her 15th birthday." He said as Claude looked at him, nervously, "Why do you all wish to go there?"

"We think we found Falco!" Lysithea blurted out, "There have been sightings of a giant wyvern there! So we think it might be him." She said as Rensen narrowed his eyes.

"...I see. And you all want me to guide you through it." They nodded, "Hmm...Very well. But we need one more person to come with us." He said and they all looked at him confused.

"Who?" They asked and Rensen just smirked.

- one week later -

"Hello everyone!" Flayn happily jumped off her kinshi, "Ignatz!" And ran right into Ignatz's arms, "I missed you!"

"It's good to see you Flayn!" Ignatz said as the two smiled fondly at each other.

"When you said someone, I wasn't not expecting Flayn." Claude said, "Hey, Flayn! I'm surprised to see Seteth isn't with you." He said as the woman chuckled.

"Oh, that's easy. I disappeared in the middle of the night to ensure my brother wouldn't be able to follow me!" Flayn grinned while everyone's souls left their bodies except Hilda, who was proud.

"Good job! I'm so proud of you Flayn!" Hilda cheered as the girl grinned.

"Rensen said he needed me but didn't specify why," Flayn said as she let go of Ignatz and the man walked up, letting out a heavy sigh.

"I need you to come with us to The Frost Forest." He said and the smile on Flayn dropped.

"Oh...The...Frost Forest...I..." Flayn gulped, "I...I don't know...if I will be able to enter." She said.

"Why?" Rensen said as the girl looked at him wearily.

"I am of Saint Cethleann's blood. Cirina...holds a grudge against my bloodline." She said and Rensen smiled sadly and extended his hand to her.

"But here is something you don't know." He said and she looked at him puzzled, "As long as someone of House Aubin permits you, you may enter The Frost Forest. I am granting you, Claude, Lorenz, Lysithea, and Hilda permission to come." He said and turned to look at the group, "Marianne, you don't need my permission. You can enter the forest without it." He said and Hilda looked at the blue-haired woman, stunned.

"Yes...I am...able to enter the forest normally. I know...my way around it." Marianne shyly looked away to avoid the questioning gazes on her.

"Everyone go get your things ready." Claude ordered, "Fernindad, you're staying here until we come back. Judith will be charged in my absence." He said and right at that moment, said woman come out.

"Really boy, going out of your way to search for a needle in a haystack?" Judith said as she followed him back his wyvern, "Claude, are you listening to me?"

"I am, Judith." Claude said as he mounted Zahra, "Please, you got to trust me."

"I do trust you. I do. I know how much you have worked for this nation and search for the one you lost. But what if she isn't alive? What if she is a frozen body?" Judith said and Claude smiled bitterly.

"Then I'll bring her home...so she may rest."

[—]

Claude arrived at his room and began to pack his things. He kept muttering the list to himself as he grabbed his daggers and slipped them into his sleeves as well as needles. He then grabbed the wrist bow he recently bought and put it on. Lastly, he grabbed Failnaught and the hairpin he had on his shelf. Claude gently picked it up and stared at it, it was the first gift he gave Alexandra and she maintained it so well.

"Alex has always been protective of her things. If someone gifts us something, we always take good care of it."

Arisa's words rang in his head as Alexandra laughed as well. Claude smiled bitterly as he gently held it.

"Obviously! No matter how big or small, I always take care of my things."

The gems on it, not a single one missing, any yellowing on the ivory was made to go away using magic. He could tell it was taken care of well. Claude let out a small sigh as he put the hairpin in his coat when suddenly a sharp pain went through his head.

"Argh!" He groaned and fell to his knees, the cup on the table fell and shattered as his hand landed on the table foot for support, but nothing prepared him for the vision that suddenly passed through his eyes.

Giggling.

He could hear giggling and the vision glitched between the colors of black and white. He was walking...walking with someone. No someone was holding his hand and pulling him. He could see he was walking through a tall field of wheat as the hand that held his, pulled.

"Come on! Come on, Roman!" A female voice that sounded eerily familiar said, "Mila said she has a surprised for us!"

"Calm down, (—-)! What has you all so excited?" Roman said as they kept walking and soon arrived at an open field where a table was set up with food, snacks, and flowers, as well as there were a few others there.

"Huh?" Roman said, but the faces of the people there were all blurred, including the woman that was holding his hand, "Mila? Uriel? Marcel? Cethleann? Michelle? And...Baldr, Hades, Ui, and Vernata? What are you guys doing here?" Roman said and the woman holding his hand, he could see her frown.

"Did you forget?! It's your birthday!"

"Gasp!" Claude gasped for air and kept taking deep breaths to calm down his beating heart, "Three, two, one. Three, two, one. One, two, three." He kept repeating over and over again till he finally calmed down.

He carefully stood up and grabbed the handkerchief in his sleeve to wipe the sweat on his brow. He nearly jumped when he heard a knock on his door. He quickly composed himself and went to the door. He opened it and saw it was Edward, glaring at him.

"You could have told me to take you to the Forest Forest instead of my sister or Rensen," Edward said and Claude smiled.

"Look. You were busy. Plus I need you to be here to watch the place beside Judith." Claude said and Edward grumbled but nodded.

"Fine." The Doctor threw his hand up, "But I'm here for another reason." He opened his coat and took out an old book with the Crest of Reigan on it.

The smile on Claude immediately dropped and his gaze became dark.

"What the hell were you doing in the Reigan Archives in the basement?" Claude said as he took the book from his hands, "You know well only I can enter. Or unless I permit you."

"I know. I know." Edward sighed, "Just...listen to what I have to say." Claude gave him a look to explain, "Rensen asked me to do a checkup on him regarding his emotional state. And I found that his Crest has suddenly been out of control. It started at the beginning of the year and it was troubling him because he was having some very disturbing thoughts when he would look at any one of the main houses of Fodlan." He explained and Claude looked at him, concerned.

"Is he going to be alright coming with us?" Claude said and Edward again sighed, "Edward, what's wrong with Rensen?"

"Cirina's anger is surfacing and if he goes to the Frost Forest, you all may very well be in danger," Edward said and Claude looked at him shocked.

"Have you told him yet?"

"That's why I came to you. Call everyone back, this instant."

[—-]

Everyone was confused by the sudden callback and even more confused when both Robert and Edward were present. Judith was there as well as Claude looked at the two doctors and let out a heavy sigh, nodding for them to speak.

"We apologize for this delay, but this is...a very serious manner." Robert said and looked at Rensen, "Rensen, I am sorry but you can not go to The Frost Forest."

"What?" Rensen looked at him shocked, "What happened?" He asked.

"Rensen...it's...your Crest." Edward spoke, "I got the results of the check-up you had me do." The man gulped, "And the results, are not good. Your Crest is currently unstable and it is affecting your emotional and mental state, greatly. If you head to The Frost Forest, the strongest connection to The Crest of Aubin and Cirina, there is a high probability...that you will lose control and attack them." He explained and Rensen looked like he had seen a ghost.

"Then, he can't come?" Lorenz said, "Bu-!" Rensen raised his hand for everyone to become silent.

"No...I..." the blacksmith licked his lips and nodded solemnly, "I understand. Thank you for telling me, truly." The two doctors looked at him sadly.

"But, we can't enter the forest without him." Lysithea said but Rensen shook his head, "There's another way?"

"There is," Rensen said and his eyes fell on Marianne.

"Um...Me?" The blue-haired woman squeaked, "But I don't understand. How?"

"Give me your hand," Rensen said as he walked over to her.

Marianne was hesitant but nodded, placing her hand on his. Rensen closed his eyes and took a deep breath before opening them, his eyes turned crimson, and suddenly Marianne's as well.

"Whoa! Whoa! Whoa!" Everyone quickly stepped away from the two when crystals of ice formed underneath their feat, and Edward was held back by Robert.

"Rensen, what are you doing?!" Judith yelled and the two blinked, their eyes turning back to normal.

Rensen stared at the girl and then glanced at Edward then back at the girl.

"I had my suspicions...You're Rinea's daughter." He said and everyone looked at him surprised.

"You...knew my biological mother?" Marianne whispered and let go of his hand.

"I did. Rinea was a distant relative of House Aubin. Though she had no crest, she still had our House's magical abilities. Seeing how she is your mother, that makes you a distant relive of mine and Alexandra." Rensen explained and everyone was shocked by such a revaluation.

"Wait, does that mean?" Edward said but unfortunately, Rensen shook his head.

"I'm sorry, my friend, but no Aubin blood runs through your veins. Your father along with Marianne's father comes from the bloodline of Maurice. But your mother, she came from a normal family." He said and Edward smiled sadly.

"Then..." Marianne gasped, "That's right." Rensen nodded, "You have the authority to give your friends permission to enter The Frost Forest. Unlike me, you don't suffer what our Crest does. So you are safe." He said and Marianne let out the biggest sigh of relief.

"Oh thank the goddess!" Marianne said and Hilda and Lysithea went to comfort her, "Rensen, thank you."

"No need to worry. I'm also happy to know that Alexandra and I aren't alone." He smiled sadly.

The people continue to speak but Edward pulled Claude away for a bit.

"What is it now?" Claude said and nearly got smacked but Edward refrained.

"Listen here you little shit," Claude suddenly was sweating beads, "You better watch Marianne. If anything happens to her I will personally show you why I am called The Wechuge." Edward threatened and Claude gulped.

"O-Okay." Claude managed to say, but Edward meant it.

[—]

"Bye! Take care!" Ignatz and Raphael yelled out and waved as Judith was with them along with Rensen, Manuela, Edward, and Robert.

"Be careful out there!" Yelled Cyril as Lysithea smiled from her pegasus.

"Make sure to activate the purification orb should things become too much!" Boey yelled as the group started to fly up.

"I packed some extra heat stones for you all! Take care!" Silque yelled and Lorenz nodded.

"You better not do anything reckless, boy!" Judith yelled, "Lorenz, set him straight if he does!"

"Of course," Lorenz said with a smile.

"Judith!" Claude dramatically put his hand over his heart, "You have so little faith in me?!"

"I mean, she has a point! You blew up the lab with Lestia in the academy!" Manuela yelled and Judith glared at the archer.

"Okay, bye everyone!" Claude said and they began to fly off.

Fernindad watched as they left, his gaze distant as he watched them leave. Judith noticed and spoke.

"I'm curious," Judith said suddenly, "why didn't you argue to go with them?"

"I have a feeling if I step near the forest...Things will go downhill." Fernindad said and Judith narrowed her eyes.

"I didn't think you were the type to see yourself as misfortune," Judith said and looked at the man puzzled as he shook his head.

"Dame Judith...do you have dreams?" He asked and the question puzzled the woman.

"Depends...Why ask such a question?" She said and looked back to the sky as the figures of the group got smaller.

"I once had a dream where I saw a battlefield." Judith's gaze became half-lidded, "In that dream, I heard a woman scream in agony. She cried as blood poured from her lips and a sword was plunged through her chest but her words were that she had no regrets protecting her family." He said and Judith sighed.

"They say Crest holds the memories of our ancestors and there will be times when we will see those memories in our dreams when a big moment is coming. Perhaps something big is about to happen."

Gerth Territory-

"Hey, Boss!"

"Huh?" Balthus looked up from his work as one of his soldiers ran up to him, "What's up? The man said as the other panted and held up a letter as he tried to catch his breath.

"Some lady came and told me to give you this." The soldier said and Balthus raised an eyebrow, "Maybe a love letter?"

"Oh, ho! In this time of war?! Well, never hurts!" Balthus laughed as he grabbed the letter and opened it.

The soldier watched, puzzled as the smile on Balthus slowly disappeared and then the man turned pale as a ghost.

"Boss?" The soldier said as Balthus gulped and put the letter away in his pocket, "Boss?!" And Balthus quickly ran away, "What the heck happened?"

[—]

"Ooohhh! He's so cute!" Bernadetta and Dorothea had to keep themselves from squealing as the infant sleeping in Gina's arms let out small coo.

The little boy had a tuff of black hair with a thin streak of brown. Gina smiled fondly as she sat comfortably on a rocking chair she held her three-month-old child. The door to the bedroom opened and in came Chris, and smiled seeing his wife.

"How is he?" He said and strolled over to her as Gina chuckled a bit.

"Miguel is fine. After I fed him, he decided to take a nap. Gluttonous little thing he is. Just like his father." Gina teased and Chris couldn't help but join in as well.

Right, when Chris was about to speak, a knock on the door came and Chris went to it. He opened the door and was about to greet Balthus but saw how pale the man was.

"What's wrong?" Chris said, "Honey, is everything alright?" Gina said and Chris gave her a thumbs up.

"Boss, um...is alright if we could talk in private?" Balthus said and Chris nodded.

Chris told Gina he would be back in a bit and the two men went to his office. Thankfully no one was there. Chris shut the door as Balthus turned to him.

"What happened?" Chris said and Balthus let out a heavy sigh.

"Something...big has come up and I have to go back to Kupala." Balthus said and Chris looked at him worried, "I'm sorry. I can't tell you the details but I have to go back."

"No, it's alright." Chris said, "I understand. When do you need to leave?" He asked.

"Tonight. I'm gonna go pack my things. Also Umm...Don't say anything to Constance?" Balthus said and Chris raised an eyebrow.

"Why?" Chris said and Balthus chuckled nervously.

"Well, you know how worried she gets. Plus she's been busy with an experiment of hers." He said and sure enough, at that moment, the building rumbled, "See what I mean?"

"I'm pretty sure Petra and Ashe are running to the lab right now to check on her." Chris snorted, "But alright, I won't say anything till after you leave. Alright?" Balthus nodded, "I'll let the others know that an emergency from your home came up and you had to leave. You fine with that?"

"Perfect."

"Also, do you know when you'll come back?" Chris asked and Balthus sighed.

"Till the day we said we would reunite at the academy," Balthus said and Chris looked at him shocked.

"Alright, I'll tell the others you left because of an emergency in your village and you don't know when you will be back."

"Thanks again, boss."

[—]

The hours passed and soon Balthus left in the middle of the night. The man let out a heavy sigh because he was feeling guilty that he had to lie to leave the place. But the man gritted his teeth as he arrived at the old abandoned chapel of Cethleann and there waiting for him, leaning on the crumbled statue of Saint Cethleann, was a hooded figure.

"You're late." A female voice spoke and Balthus let out an annoyed grunt as the woman stood up straight and removed her hood, revealing it was Inami, "Have you said your goodbyes?"

"Look, I'm only doing this because I owe you a favor and it will clear my debt. Also because your guards have protected my village and mother." Balthus said as Inami strolled over to him with a smile, "But if Claude finds out that I was part of what you have planned, he's not going to spare me."

"Oh, don't worry about that man. I have my ways." Inami said and the two went through the forest.

"Look, just what exactly do you want me to do?" Balthus sighed, frustrated because the woman refused to say what she wanted him to help her with.

"Oh, that's easy." Inami smiled as she got on her wyvern and grinned down at him with a wicked gleam in her eyes.

"We're going to steal a body."

- The Imperial Year 1182: Lone Moon -

Claude didn't know what to say or do as he paced back and forth outside his grandfather's bedroom. Edward had been called in again to check on Lord Reigan's health. It seemed the old man was losing energy every day. It was becoming difficult for him to sit, walk, and even eat. He had become paler and he was having difficulty even holding things. Claude still hoped that his grandfather would live a few more years and that his health would improve.

"Claude." Claude turned and saw Judith there along with...Robert?

"Doctor Robert?! H-How are you here?" Claude said he quickly went up to them as the old doctor smiled, "I have so many questions."

"They can wait." Robert said, "I'm here to help Edward." He said and went past him and he was allowed into Lord Oswald's room.

"Claude." Again Judith called his name, "I know...this is difficult for you but...you should be prepared for the worse." She said and Claude gritted his teeth but nodded.

"Claude."

The two turned and saw the two doctors at the door. Edward shook his head and spoke, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Lord Oswald wishes to see you," Edward said and Claude quickly went in.

Lord Oswald's room was somewhat grand but also had a comfortable atmosphere like a cottage in the woods. A king-size bed with coffee-colored blankets. Cream colored beds sheets and pillows, and a fur blanket. A bit closer to the balcony was a desk made of almyran pine wood piled with documents that needed to be seen. There was also a smaller table for drinking and eating. Claude looked at the bed and flinched seeing his grandfather. When he was a child, the old man had a healthy glow. It would be his uncle, Lord Godfrey, that would pick him up at the border and bring him to Fodlan. His mother refused to even meet his grandfather after many years.

This kept happening over the years, back and forth he would travel between Fodlan and Almyra in secret. But, at least some good was brought out of it. His uncle and mother would write letters to each other when they had time. Back to the present, Claude took a seat next to the bed. Oswald was having trouble breathing, but their eyes opened a bit and he smiled weakly.

"I'm sorry you had to see me like this. I can already tell I don't have much longer to live." Lord Oswald said and Claude smiled bitterly as his hand intertwined and tightened.

"Don't say that, I'm sure you'll be up and running like before." Claude said and Oswald chuckled then coughed, "Take it easy, old man."

"Claude, do you remember the drawer on my desk?" He said, Claude was confused but nodded, "The one with the deer craving, open it." This surprised Claude.

It was the one drawer on his grandfather's desk that no one was allowed to touch. It was even locked with a special barrier and a key. Claude stood up and carefully walked to the desk, moving the chair. On the fourth drawer on the left side of the desk, was craved a deer. Claude can feel some sort of magic on it and it dispelled at his presence. The young man looked towards his grandfather, who nodded. Claude gulped and pulled the drawer open, it was a velvet green inside but what caught his attention were five small boxes. One was a ring box that he recognized had the marriage ring that was passed down from generation to generation, given to the life partner of the next head of House Reigan.

The other four boxes he did not recognize. He took them all out and closed the drawer then walked back to his grandfather and sat down. Oswald needed help to sit and Claude helped. The old man coughed a bit and nodded.

"I will tell you what each box is." Oswald began, "The first one, you already recognized it, it is the family heirloom, the matrimonial ring given to the life partner of the head of House Reigan. It belonged to your grandmother." Lord Oswald smiled fondly, "This box," he picked up a brown-colored wooden box, "possesses the core of Failnught, The Crest Stone of Reigan." And he opened it.

Claude was stunned seeing a Crest Stone with the Crest of Reigan on it. The very life source of all relics, for him, was the life source of Failnught. Oswald chuckled seeing his puzzled expression as he held the stone.

"There was an accident 300 years ago when a thief broke into House Reigan. They stole Failnught and tried to use the relic. But it backfired and they there were killed by the very weapon they stole. For safety precautions, the Crest Stone is separated from the relic and kept in a separate location till it is time for it to be used." Oswald said and put the crest stone back in its box.

"This third box," a thin red one, "possess a key." And sure enough inside was a bronze key that looked like it had become darker over the years.

But the top had engraved the Crest of Reigan along with topaz embedded in the center of the moon. Oswald's expression became serious, which spooked Claude.

"What I am going to tell you, is something your uncle, your mother, grandmother, Edward and I know. And now, it's time you knew as well." Oswell said, "I believe you know of House Aubin, correct?"

"Yes." Claude said, "But what does this have to do with them?"

"House Aubin and House Reigan have seen each other as enemies since the end of The War of Heroes. I'm sure you already know the story of Cirina and Roman Reigan." Claude nodded gravely, "There is more to that story. And it is for you to find out." He handed him the key with a sad smile, "House Reigan since the end of The War of Heroes, has recorded its family tree, hardships, achievements, its sins, and even its darkest moments. As well as events that have been erased from history." He said as Claude looked at him surprised.

"There is the reason why The Church of Serios is not so fond of House Reigan, it is because are also known as The Archives of Fodlan, and they can not touch us because of a contract Romani Reigan, son of Roman Reigan, established with Saint Serios." He said, shocking Claude.

"This is the key to the records of our family. Deep in the basement of our home, only someone with the Crest of Reigan and a Holy Doctor who has sworn their loyalty to our house may enter. It is now your turn." Oswald said and handed him the key, "I know you will do well."

"This is...a huge responsibility." Claude gulped, "But I promise I won't let you down."

"I know you won't." Oswell smiled sadly, "Now, for the remaining two boxes." He said and picked up the fourth box, "This is a music box, it used to belong to your mother. If you get the chance, please give it back to her. And...tell her I'm sorry." He said as Claude looked at him sadly.

Truthfully, Claude didn't know what to say. Claude knew the relationship between his grandfather and mother was strained to the point his mother refused to even talk to her father. The first being that his grandfather did not approve of her then-lover now husband and the second was, he tried to hunt down his daughter and tried to get her married to a family friend. Yes, and the lover she ran away with just so happened to be...The King of Almyra.

King Hassan of The Sands.

Claude didn't blame his mother for refusing to speak to his grandfather. If he was in the same situation, he would have done the same thing too. But it seemed over the years, Lord Oswald had realized his mistakes and acknowledged his shortcomings, something that Lord Godfrey said was difficult.

"It comes as no surprise that we Reigans are stubborn," Godfrey said as Claude looked at him puzzled.

"What do you mean?" Claude asked as his uncle smiled sadly as he closed his eyes and continued his work on making some poisons.

"When a person refuses to acknowledge their mistakes, it will come to bite them back tenfold. When you refuse to listen to others and force your ideals onto them, in the end, you are becoming selfish. You are making everything about you." Godfrey said and Claude was still confused.

"I don't understand," Claude said and his uncle smiled sadly.

"You're still a kid. You'll understand one day."

"I...will try," Claude said as his grandfather chuckled.

"Now, this box." The fifth and final box, "Is a bit different from the others." He said with an amused glint, "Go on, open it."

Again, Claude was confused but he did as he was told. Honestly, the archer didn't know he should be afraid or excited. He opened the box and raised an eyebrow seeing a small wooden flute with four holes and one at the back. Behind it, was a folded piece of paper. He unfolded and it was a small music sheet, the score for some sort of tune.

"What is this?" Claude asked as Oswald sighed and smiled.

"I had this made for you when you were thirteen. This is called Orion's flute, a flute used to play a specific tune for calling forth our flying mounts. But also, it is a song written by Reigan to sing to the stars for those who have passed on so they may rest in peace." He said as Claude stared at the flute.

"Claude, you've grown into a fine young man but you have much to learn. There will be many twists in turns in your path as time goes on. You will make many enemies and there will be those who will betray you. But even so, I know you won't let that take you down." He said and Claude smiled sadly.

"Another thing, about the woman you have your eyes on." Claude stiffened, "Sigh, who would have thought that you would fall for a dangerous one too? Typical of us Reigans. You had to fall for the one that wants to kill you, Alexandar's granddaughter. Godfrey would be howling if was here and Alexander would have come after you. Alexandra would never shut up about her granddaughter if she were alive." Oswald huffed as he crossed his Claude let out an embarrassed chuckle.

"I mean...what is there not love?" Claude said and the old man scoffed.

"Your grandmother would approve. Phina was a hunter and mercenary for a while before she returned to her house." He said and Claude snorted.

"This the first I've heard you talk about grandmother. I wish I got to meet her." Claude said as his grandfather sighed.

"My memory is hazy but your grandmother is the one person I can never forget. I met her when I was fifteen. I was on my way to the Officer's academy when my carriage was attacked. Right on the verge of being killed when the body assassin fell on top of me. There, towering over with an axe in her hand, was her." Oswald smiled fondly at the memory, "She looked like a demon that fell from the sky."

"Grandfather...please tell me you didn't tell her that?"

"Oh no." Claude let out a sigh of relief, "I told her that she looked like she committed mass murder." And Claude groaned, "Oh hush boy! Don't think I know about your taste so you don't get to judge me!" Claude hated that the old man was right.

When he first saw Alexandra fight, it was when they were children. The second was when they reunited. The fourth was a bitter and sorrowful fight. The fifth against those who slither in the dark and the last...her final battle. She only smiled and her final word to him and his friends.

"Live.."

"But enough about me." Oswald said, "I know how things have been difficult for you. So take this moment to talk. I want to hear about how things were in the academy for you, as well as the woman you fancy." Claude couldn't help but laugh a bit, seeing the playful gleam in his grandfather's eyes.

It was the same gleam his mother would get when she would tease him or his father.

"Well, it started like this."

So Claude spoke. He about his time in the academy and the adventures and events that happened. He spoke about the things he learned as well as the type of people he met. He spoke about the time he went into Abyss. He spoke about his time learning with his professors. But he also spoke of the difficult times. But most importantly, of the memories and bonds he created. As Claude spoke, his Professor's words rang in his head as the image of him, the golden deer, and Alexandra all stood together as they prepared for a classroom picture.

"Even if a person is no longer here, as long as we remember them, they will live on. That they existed. Memories are the most precious things. Think of it like this, we are witnesses to the stories of people that were never told. And we know they lived. We know they existed. That's why memories are the most beautiful and precious things. So hold onto them tightly."

The hours passed and the two continued to talk late into the night. Soon it was time for Claude to return to his room and he bid his grandfather farewell. As the doors closed and now only Oswald remained, he smiled softly as he laid back on his bed. He could not see that the will-oh-wisp were gathering. The old man stared at his bedroom ceiling and closed his eyes and then opened them. His eyes widened, seeing the figure of a brown-haired woman with honey-colored eyes, who smiled softly.

"Ah...Phina..." Oswald whispered as the woman nodded and walked up to him, "I see...I understand." He smiled softly and soon he saw another figure, a man with the same colored hair as his wife but had green eyes, "Godfrey..." the old man whispered.

"Sigh...That boy has grown. I wish you both would have seen him grow up into the fine young man he is. Tiana raised him well." He said and the two nodded as he closed his eyes.

The will-oh-wisp stopped singing and soon, Oswald's soul came out of his body. He smiled softly as he took the hand of his wife and son, walking to the balcony as they disappeared into a shower of dust, the dust becoming part of the stars.

"Tiana my daughter...I wish I could have apologized to you in person, but I know my words would mean little. You don't have to forgive me. I only hope that you are living a wonderful life with the man you love. You raised an amazing son. I'm proud of him. Tiana...Claude...goodbye."

The next day, Lord Oswald was pronounced deceased. Edward was given his will and he read it out loud a few days later at The Roundtable. Lord Oswald left his leadership and position to his grandson, Claude von Reigan. While many wanted to protest, they had no choice. Claude was stunned and knew what he had to do. For his nation. For his people. For himself. Claude picked up the mantle and worked to maintain balance and order, doing everything to keep The Alliance together while at the same time, secretly creating chaos in The Empire. And soon, forming secret alliances with The Faerghus Resistance.

- A few days after Lord Oswald passed away -

Rain always seems to fall on days those lost. Or the skies became gray to match the atmosphere. Claude wore a black suit but in his hand, he held a torch. When Edward read his grandfather's will, he asked to be cremated and his ashes scattered so he may join his wife in the winds. Lords, nobles, along with his friends, The Golden Deer, and the leaders of the clans that lived in the Alliance, remained silent as Seteth spoke the sentences of passings and Flayn sang a holy hymn. Even in war, Zander and The Blue Lions found time to be there for him. Sir Jeralt was there as well. Claude didn't know how to feel.

Perhaps the loss hit much harder because of their last conversation. They didn't part on bitter terms, but good. He would never forget the fond smile his grandfather had as he listened to him speak of his time in the academy and the memories he made. He may not have had the happiest childhood in his time between traveling to Fodlan and Almyra, but it was the small moments, that made him miss them. He thought his tears dried up after enduring so much. After losing his Baba. After losing his uncle. After losing Alexandra. After losing Dimitri, Dedue, Lestia, and Sadi. Even Edelgard, Hubert, and Henry, even if they were alive, he felt lost them. After enduring the harsh realities of discrimination in both regions. He thought he had become stronger, even numb. But no...He took a deep breath and looked at where his grandfather's body was, surrounded by flowers and plants. Gladand iolus, Allium, and valeriana represent strength. Snowdrops, prunus, and poppies represent hope. Daisies represent love and loyalty. And lastly, strelitzias and freesia, represent freedom and rebirth.

The holy hymns and words came to an end. Claude walked up to the pile of wood around the coffin and took a deep breath.

"You can rest now, Grandfather." Claude said, "I'll carry on our legacy." He said throwing the torch.

He walked back to his friends, who stood beside him. Hilda looked at him worried and smiled sadly as she handed him a handkerchief. Zander nodded and gently patted his shoulder. They watched as the fire spread over the wood and soon it spread all over the coffin. As the fire grew and blazed, Claude took a deep breath and pulled out the small flute he had hidden in his suite. Unknown to all, in the crowd was a woman who wore a veil. She used magic to hide her chestnut-colored hair and a veil to hide her face. The woman was silent but her eyes widened when she heard a tune being played. Many were stunned by the tune but the heads of the main houses of the Alliance recognized it. Claude walked up a bit close to the fire, playing the tune on his flute.

"Oh Golden Sun, oh ancient wind." Judith began singing, "Shine down our path to Freedom." Count Edmond joined her.

"Become one with the wind, our road to paradise." Holst sang, "Into the Golden fields the golden deer runs." Count Gloucester sang.

"To the fields where the wind blows freely"

"The whispering fields sing the song of freedom.

Run and run, fast as a hawk. Eyes sharp and fond like the dawn.

Golden Deer, run fast. Over the golden fields run freely and strong."

The song ended as the tune faded away. Claude slowly put down his flute and wiped his tears.

"So long, Grandfather."

Thankfully the remainder of the funeral went smoothly. It was clear no one was in the mood to start drama. If anyone started it, one look from Edward and Judith shut them up. Nobles left and right kept coming up to say their condolences. A few brave even had the nerve to introduce their daughters. Claude put on a mask like he always did and greeted and thanked them politely. After so much, he finally had some time to breathe. Claude walked out of the tent and noticed it finally stopped raining. He felt he could breathe again. Or so he thought when he saw the tent flap open and out came out Zander.

"Hey." The prince said as Claude sighed, "Just to let you know, if you need someone snipped, I got you." He said and Claude was stunned but his lips quivered and his shoulders started to shake as he was trying not to laugh.

"Haha!" The laugh came out and Zander smiled a bit seeing him laugh, "I swear, you and your jokes."

"Hmm..." Zander hummed, "But if you ever..." Claude snickered.

"Thank you. I needed that." Claude said, "Heading back?"

"Yeah." Zander said as he put his hand in his pockets, "County of Aubin can't be left behind long. The others are saying their farewells. We won't be able to see each other in person for quite a while." He said as Claude smiled bitterly.

"But we can still talk to each other." Zander said, making the archer blink as he waved his hand and made a small gift box appear, then made it float into Claude's hands, "Emily made several magic tools for us before we lost contact with her. She left a letter to give you this." He said as Claude looked at him puzzled.

"You should open it when you are alone," Zander said with a small smile and Claude followed him as he went to the area where the flying mounts and the normal ones were.

There, Glenn, Kuza, Sylvain, and the rest were waiting for him along with the golden deer. Fireheart seemed to be having a conversation with Zahra as the white wyvern snorted and then chirped seeing him.

"Take care, everyone!" Hilda called out The Blue Lions and their king got on their mounts.

"We will!" Zander yelled out and everyone waved goodbye as they left.

Claude waved and smiled sadly but also was curious about what Emily left him.

Claude sat in his room, staring at the fire in the fireplace as he let out a tired sigh. The funeral was over, and organizing it and everything after was a lot. As well as trying to process his emotions of grief through all of it. He cried so much already but it felt like wasn't enough. Claude picked up the box Zander gave him and opened it. The first thing in his sight was a letter with a sealed wax that had The Crest of Noa. He cracked it and unfolded the letter then started to read it.

If you're reading this, it means I have done what I did. I have closed off my lands and put myself in a deathlike state to protect my people. I wish I could be there for you and the others but the answers you seek, I can not give you. Hardships will come in many forms, they will test you and those around you. They will test the bonds you created and try to tear you apart. But I know you care, even if you try to hide it.

"Mysterious as usual..." Claude muttered and continued to read.

Claude von Reigan, I know you tried to stick your nose in what you should have not. I know your heritage. I know you tried to find out about me and the others behind our backs. I just chose not ever say anything because I believe you will own up to your actions.

Claude stiffened. Emily knew how to stab someone with her words.

But I also can understand why you hid it. But you must also understand that your dream is possible but you must also be aware of those around you. People's thoughts, beliefs, and preferences won't change immediately. Instead, if you do achieve your dream, start small. Trust your friends, the ones that have stood beside you in your highs and lows. Also, I suggest you start by actually making connections! You can't just tear down Fodlan's Throat like that! You got to start small! Oh, for example, I had a very nice chat with your father about possibly opening a trading route with them as well as the student exchange I spoke of at the ball.

The talk didn't go smoothly but we came to a mutual understanding and established a relationship. Thank your mother by the way. Anyhow, back to the subject, let me tell you about your ancestor, Roman Reigan.

Claude sat up straight.

Roman Reigan was an orphan. A man with no family who grew up in a village near the mountains. The people of the village took care of him. One day, the boy went into the woods to hunt when he saw a girl in trouble. The girl was being chased by bandits. He helped her escape and hide for a long time till they made sure they were gone. Once they were gone, the boy could see the girl.

This is all I will tell you. The rest you have to find out yourself. As for my final gift, it is a crystal ball. You can use it to communicate with Zander directly should you wish to form a secret alliance with Faerghus to take down the real enemy, Those Who Slither in the Dark. Edelgard is nothing but a puppet to them. Edelgard believes that if she wins the war, she will be able to get rid of them. Unfortunately, they also believe the same. But now that Anacharis has returned...she will make sure to make Edelgard believes she has won before she tears it all down.

Anacharis is someone that you should never let your guard down. But I will tell you something. I know her weakness. Unfortunately, I can not write it here, but when I return, when the professor, Amir, and Alexandra return and break me free, I will tell you all.

Claude, this is my final letter for now. I know you will do well. Amir, Alexandra, and Arisa are alive, but I can't tell you where they are. I know this sounds unbelievable but please, keep on believing.

Keep on believing they will come back.
