Arc 1: Wyvern Rebellion - Chapter 10|
Ewan was absorbed in the book. His eye scanned every line over and over. His fingers flipped the pages back and forth, and then flipped through them again. This had pretty big claims. But they were more than just claims. They spoke a truth. The person who wrote this was a mage that lived during the time of dragons long ago. But, the way it worded things, it wasn't just dragons and humans. Wyverns existed as well. They lived together alongside the two other races. But how was this not known to them? How were beasts of feral instinct able to live alongside dragons?
"Ewan. Ewan. EWAN!" Alister shouted, "Are you listening to me?"
"What? Yes, I'm listening." Ewan replied, his mind coming back to reality.
"I thought the book cursed you." The old man said jokingly.
"Ha ha, very funny." Ewan replied, "You said that this magic was a lost magic, correct?"
"Yes, I did. And it's a very rare lost magic as well." Alister added.
"How rare are we talking?" The young researcher inquired.
"Well, have you ever heard of Wyvern Slaying Magic anywhere else in the whole of Earth-Land?" He shot back. Ewan paused for a moment.
"Okay, yeah, I'll give you that." Ewan agreed, "But still, this is a very big deal. This is a big discovery. This means that there's an unknown type of magic in existence, and we were the ones that found it. And not only that, if what this book is saying can be proven, then there was a race of beast that existed during that time. But, this book also mentions another thing. The Dragon King Festival."
"The Dragon King Festival?" Alister asked.
"Yeah. It's a festival that the Dragons and Wyverns put on, with the Dragons acting as the royals and the Wyverns as their subjects. Dragons would fight each other to determine who would be 'king'. The Dragon King is the strongest of the dragons, and they would lead the Dragon race. But, there are also several other things that I discovered. One, Wyverns didn't take part. Two, and this is a little complex, the Eclipse Gate incident." Ewan explained.
"Eclipse Gate? You mean what occurred during the Grand Magic Games some time ago?" Alister asked.
"Yeah. Details aside, as I understand it, dragons came through from that very same time period. I mean, don't you find it strange that there were no Wyverns that came through?" Ewan questioned. Alister stared at the page.
"Yes... now that you mention it, that is rather strange." Alister admitted, "If Dragons came through the gate, why not Wyverns as well? And yet this book very adamantly states that Wyverns did indeed exist during that time. Looking through it, the author clearly had a relationship with them. Enough that they were taught Wyvern Slaying Magic."
"I think it has to do with the Dragon King Festival." Ewan stated, "Why would the Wyverns not participate in the Dragon King Festival? I mean, the whole point of it is to show strength to the Dragons. And yet, the Wyverns just stood by and watched as the Dragons fought among themselves. Could they have gone extinct?" He mused.
"There's a very good chance of that. If Dragons did end up wiping out the Wyverns, then it would explain why we haven't seen any evidence of them. But, then that leaves us with the question of where did they go? No fossils, no remains. The only known record of Wyverns are the ones who live out in the wild as feral beasts. But, according to this book, the Wyverns were highly intelligent. They could speak and they had a culture. They could use magic." Alister stated, "There has to be more to this story." The old man grabbed the book and flipped through some more pages. His eyes met Ewan.
"Wyvern Slaying Magic... If this magic were to have existed, wouldn't it have been passed down? Or at the very least some form of it to have existed to this day?" He pondered.
"Maybe it's just been forgotten over time?" Ewan suggested.
"I highly doubt that. If the Wyverns were intelligent and civilized, then they would have passed it down. In the same way Dragons taught humans, albeit to have allies to fight other dragons, Wyverns would have done it as well. Especially if Wyverns were considered weaker than Dragons. It's not unheard of for lesser creatures to gain power over their enemies, and this Magic would have given them a chance to do so. Which means that this magic, whatever it may be, must be quite powerful. Not to mention it's Lost Magic." Alister postulated, "There is one problem though. There's no description of the magic. No details on how it's used or what it does."
"Well, that makes sense. 'Lost Magic' for a reason'." Ewan chuckled. Ewan grabbed the book and flipped through it. His hand brushed over a picture that was drawn on one of the pages. He tilted his head and began to trace it with his finger.
"Dragon Slaying Magic. How does one learn it? As I've read, it's by being taught by Dragons. And yet, I know there are mages out there that have Slaying Magic." Ewan mused, "Is it possible that some form of this magic exists today? Did the Dragons pass it down to humans after the war?"
"Possibly. Dragons are known for their immense magic reserves, and it's likely they would have had more than enough to spare to teach magic to the humans. What are you thinking there." The old man asked.
"It's a stretch, but Fairy Tail has numerous amounts of Dragon Slayers. It's no wonder they are a powerful guild. However, to know Dragon Slaying Magic, one must be taught. Someone taught those mages that magic. And it's not like Dragons are common nowadays." Ewan explained.
"Then, are you suggesting that the Dragons are still alive? That's impossible. They died out hundreds of years ago." Alister reasoned.
"No no... It's hard to piece together. I've spoken with Sting-san and Rogue-san from Saber Tooth. They only know what is common knowledge about the Dragon King Festival." Ewan was getting a headache at trying to find the missing link.
"There are methods to gaining magic without being taught. You must not be in the know. Lacrima infused magic." The old man explained.
"Lacrima infused magic... You're telling me people can use magic by having Lacrima?" Ewan asked. The old man chuckled, amused that Ewan didn't know everything.
"Yes. You're too focused on Dragon Slayers being taught by Dragons. What if I told you can learn Dragon Slaying Magic by simply embedding Lacrima that contains said magic into your body?" The old man said with a smile. Ewan looked at Alister like he grew two heads.
"WHAT?!" Ewan shouted in surprise.
"That's right. There is such a thing as Lacrima that has magic inside of it. When a mage comes across it, they can use it to their advantage. In this case, a Lacrima that contains Dragon Slaying Magic. However, it is rather dangerous, and it's not for the faint of heart. Only those with a powerful will to master the magic are effective at it. Lacrima is a diverse item. It can contain all kinds of magic, from normal to Lost." Alister explained.
"So you're telling me, that if a mage were to find a Lacrima with Dragon Slaying Magic, they could use it to gain that power? Wait- Which means the same could be said about Wyvern Slaying Magic!" Ewan realized, "That would mean that-"
"A mage could potentially learn Wyvern Slaying Magic..." The two men said at the same time. They looked at each other.
"This is getting more interesting by the second. Hypothetically, if Wyvern Slaying Magic isn't known, it's too precious to just be tossed away like garbage." The old man continued the line of thought.
"Meaning that whoever had it, hid it somewhere. But, the question is where? Is it possible that there are still records of it somewhere?" Ewan wondered. He looked down at the picture he found. He began tapping it.
"This. Old man, look at this. Does this look like Lacrima to you?" He asked.
"It's a bit hard to make out. Why do you ask?" Alister replied.
"If the Wyverns taught the person who wrote this book this magic, it stands to reason that they would have placed the magic somewhere. And if that's the case. Chances are that the information is in this book! Can you use your magic to find that?" Ewan asked, visibly excited.
"Calm down, boy. It's too early to say that just yet. For now, let's just take this one step at a time. One step at a time." The old man said as he calmed the younger man down.
"Right... Right. You're right. One step at a time. One step at a time." The researcher repeated, "Sorry, it's just, this is a big discovery. A lot to take in."
"Indeed it is. Indeed it is. But, if we are to do this, we must do it properly. First, we must decipher what this picture is. It may be some sort of clue as to where the Wyvern Slaying Magic may be. Once we determine that, I can't just have you traipsing along to where it is. If I were you, I'd hire some mages to accompany you as protection. The world can be a dangerous place, and one can never be too careful. Especially when dealing with unknown magics. For now, go and get some rest. I'll try and decipher what this picture means. I'll also get in contact with a friend of mine. He's a guild master. Perhaps he'll give me a discount." The old man chuckled.
"Sounds like a plan. I'll leave it to you. And thank you." Ewan replied. He turned and left the library, leaving the old man to his thoughts.
"I wonder... who wrote this book. There's something about this story that just doesn't add up. What are you hiding?"
The old man flipped through the book and found a page that contained a picture of a Wyvern. The picture depicted the creature to be adorned with some sort of armor. And what's more, compared to modern Wyverns, this one looks imposing, even through a drawing. Next to the drawing was a single phrase, 'Sky Dominion'.
"Sky Dominion? What is that supposed to mean?" He muttered to himself. He took out a pen and paper and began writing down everything he read.
-Emerald Oasis Guild Hall-
Abernathy approached Lyra who was sitting at the bar. She was covered in dirt and her dress was torn. She was lying her head down with her eyes closed.
"Here." Abe said, placing a drink he was carrying against her neck. She flinched from the coldness of the glass. She looked up and saw the drink.
"Oh... thanks." She replied, taking it and sipping the drink.
"That was quite the performance. I couldn't tell halfway through if you guys were fighting or doing a stage play." He joked. Lyra gave a small laugh.
"To be honest, halfway through it stopped being a match. I listened to your advice and took the chance to talk to her. She finally listened." Lyra said while staring into her drink. She gave a sad smile.
"Well, that's good. Now the question is, what will you do next?" Abe asked. Lyra looked up at him and blinked.
"What do you mean?" She questioned.
"You told her you were sorry for leaving, and she told you how much she hated it and that she'd talk to you if you beat her. Question is, did you beat her? I mean, we were all there watching, but the true victory is when you feel like you won. Did you?" Abe asked with a knowing smile.
Lyra's eyes widened and her face broke out into a grin.
"Yeah. Yeah, I did." Lyra said. She hopped off her stool and hugged Abernathy.
"Thanks Abe." She expressed. Suddenly she backed off, blushing. Abe gave a small chuckle.
"You're welcome. Now, you should go take a bath and get some rest. You look like you got run over by a train." Abe joked.
"Gee, thanks. That really makes me feel better." Lyra sarcastically replied.
"Anytime. Also, I've got a present for you. Consider it an early birthday gift. Or later, depends on how you look at it." Abe stated.
"Oooh, a present? For me? You shouldn't have!" She chimed, "Wait, you didn't break something again, did you?"
"No. No I did not. And as long as you believe that I should be fine." He said as he handed her a box. She opened it to see a white piece of cloth. She raised an eyebrow.
"A handkerchief? Thank you?" She said, confused.
"Check it out." Abe insisted. She held it up. It was a white handkerchief with a silver border and her initials sewn into it.
"Abe... Thank you!" Lyra said, hugging him.
"You're welcome. Just remember to wash it. Don't want it stinking like sweat and dirt." He said as he pat her on the head.
"But seriously, a handkerchief?" She asked with a serious face.
"I'm not made of jewels, Lyra. Besides, I figured this would mean more than anything else I could give you. It's your birthday. Consider it a token of my appreciation for all your hard work." Abe replied with a smile.
"Okay, okay, fine. I'll accept it. But you still owe me something... maybe... a date?" She asked looking down and blushing.
"I'm sorry, I didn't catch that." Abernathy said leaning in closer. Lyra turned up to see him get really close. She stood immediately.
"Nothing! I'm going home. Don't be late, or Coral will come after you." Lyra said as she quickly left the guild hall. Abernathy watched as she left. The moment the door closed, he let a breath out he didn't know he was holding.
"Did she ask me to take her on a date?" He asked himself, not believing what he heard.
"What was that?" Basil asked, overhearing the conversation.
"N-Nothing. Nothing at all." Abernathy said as he ran upstairs to his room.
"Oooookay then?" Basil asked as he watched the time wizard leave. Uno, Dos, and Tres were sweeping up the guild along with Zephyr.
"Abe did something weird." Zephyr explained as he swept after the wooden golems.
"I would be stunned if Abernathy didn't do something weird." Basil replied.
"He got Lyra a present." Zephyr added. Basil blinked.
"And that's weird because...?"
"Because she didn't like it. She was being all flirty and stuff before and when she opened the box she just thanked him." the wind mage explained.
"Hmm, that doesn't sound like what Lyra would do." The guild master placed his hands on his hips. Dos waddled over and tugged on Basil's pants. It beckoned him down with a wave of its stubby arms. Basil knelt and touched Dos' head.
"You don't say. He did? Well well." Basil chuckled. "Either Abe finally woke up, or he's starting a fire without knowing it. I think I'll let him figure it out, though. Should be fun to watch."
"Huh? What did it say?" Zephyr asked, eyeing Dos.
"You'll find out soon enough," Basil said, ruffling the wind mage's hair. "You're almost done with your punishment from Coral. Actually, today is the last day."
"Thank goodness. I'm sick of sweeping and dusting. The guild's never this clean. It's like, not natural."
"Come on, Zeph. Even I clean up my area sometimes." Fiora said as she came into the guild hall.
"Fiora!" Zephyr cheered. The two embraced each other.
"How are you feeling?" Basil asked with a smile.
"Like I got hit by a shark." Fiora quips.
"Do you feel okay?" Zephyr asked, releasing his hold on her.
"I'm fine, Zeph. Just sore." Fiora reassured him.
"She's a tough cookie. No need to worry about her, Zeph. So, tell me. How was your sparring match with Coral?" Basil asked.
"It was..." Fiora trailed off, looking for the right word.
"It was what?" Zephyr asked.
"It was the most exciting thing I've ever done in a while! I've never fought someone like that before!" Fiora said with a gleam in her eye.
"So, you're saying that it was a good experience?" Basil asked.
"Definitely. She brought her A game. Yeah she got all mad and pissy, and I did too. But when we slugged it out, all of that stopped mattering. It was just me and her At that point, the only thing that mattered was the battle. I think we both needed that. Thanks for letting me have that chance, master." Fiora said with a smile. Basil eyes widened and looked to Dos.
"Dos, do you see that? Miracles do exist! Fiora Blaze is smiling!" He said excitedly to the wooden golem. Dos waved its arms excitedly.
"Haha. Very funny, Master. You're lucky I'm tired." Fiora quipped, "In any case, I'm gonna take a nap."
"Zephyr, once you're done, you should get some rest as well. And don't forget to take a shower." Basil said as he walked away.
"Fine, mom." Zephyr retorted.
"Is that Coral I hear?" Basil stated with a hand to his ear.
"No, I didn't say it! I didn't say it! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" Zephyr apologized profusely running off. Basil laughed.
"So, how is Luna doing? She looks like she's having fun." Fiora asked.
"You know, I took a page out of your book, Fiora. I had ulterior motives for that sparring match other than testing your magic." He stated.
"Ulterior motives? You?" Fiora asked. Basil smiled.
"All of you learned about each other. All of you were able to put everything on the line. And when you did, everything that burdened you fell away and you were able to face each other at full power. And, for the first time since you've joined this guild, I finally saw what makes each of you tick. I saw who you really are. I know what your heart desires. Your hearts have always been on your sleeves, but until today, I could never truly see them. You guys don't know how proud I am of you all." He said with a smile. Fiora was at a loss for word. She crossed her arms under her breast and looked away bashful.
"Uh... thanks, master." She said, not really knowing what to say.
"Fiora, go and get some rest. You deserve it." Basil said, walking away.
"W-wait, master. I need to ask you something." She said, stopping him.
"Yes? What is it?" He asked.
"I want you to help me get stronger. I have a rival who is in a guild here, Seraphine. She's going to be in the Grand Magic Games. When we go, I want to be on the five man team. I want to show her and everyone else I have what it takes to be a champion. I want to be the Flame Empress. Will you help me?" She asked. Basil looked at her for a moment, then nodded.
"I've been waiting for you to ask." Basil said with a smile, "From tomorrow, you will be undergoing a training regime that will focus on improving your magic, and your body. There are a few things I saw out there with your fire magic. But with a little elbow grease, we'll have you ready in no time."
"Really? Yes!" Fiora cheered. "Thank you!" She said punching Basil on the arm.
"Ow, Fiora, I'm a middle-aged man. Be gentle!" Basil exclaimed, rubbing his arm.
"I've got to go and tell Gideon! I'm gonna make him join me! Thanks, master!" Fiora said running out the door. Basil waved her off and turned to Dos.
"She sure has energy, doesn't she?" He asked Dos. Dos shook its head. "It's a good thing she has Gideon to ground her. Anyway, today has been a tiring and long day. Uno and Tres, go ahead and return to your pots. Dos, be a dear get some new dirt for your pots. I'll make sure everything is set for the night."
Uno and Tres began to waddle upstairs to their pots. Dos waved and began to leave the guild hall. Basil went around the hall and turned off the lights.
"Look at you, all sprite and lively. I almost didn't recognize you with all the owning of a guild and whatnot." Alister walked through the doors. Basil jumped, surprised by his appearance.
"Alister, you gave me quite a fright." Basil said with a hand over his chest.
"A shame. I thought it was a nice way to start a conversation." Alister stated with a smile.
"So, what can I help you with?" Basil asked.
"I'm in need of your guild's services. To keep a long story short, I have a young man who'll need escorting to a ruin. He's a researcher and he's on his way to the finding of the century. Thing is, him dying would break my heart." Alister said a tiny bit playfully.
"So, you want us to escort him?" Basil asked.
"Well, to put it more accurately, I want you to send a group of your finest mages. I would have called before, but I was busy with something. And perhaps... putting the job reward on a tab?" Alister asked with a small grin. Basil raised an eyebrow.
"I can't pay my wizards on promises, Alister." Basil replied placing his hands on his hips.
"I know, I know. I wouldn't do that to you. I just thought that I'd offer you this. If it works, you'll be the first to know. It will revolutionize the magical world, I'm sure." Alister insisted. That caught Basil's interest.
"Tell you what, since we're old friends, and you've helped me a couple of times, I'll hear you out on this job. We can work out the details of payment later. If it turns out that it's not something I can get behind, I'll give it to someone else. Deal?" Basil asked, extending his hand. Alister shook his hand.
"Deal. Now sit down, you're about to be blown away. Oh, and tell me what you think about this." Alister said as he handed Basil the book.
-Emerald Oasis, Main Hall, 20 minutes later-
Basil had to readjust his glasses several times as he read the contents of the book. He couldn't believe what he was reading.
"You're sure about this? Everything in this book is... true?" The guild master asked. Alister nodded.
"Everything. I wouldn't come to you unless I was sure." He replied. Basil blinked.
"I must say, you've outdone yourself." Basil said closing the book, "This is quite a discovery, my friend. And whoever this young man is will become quite the famous researcher. If what you say about the ruins are true, then it could be that we've discovered something quite remarkable."
"Indeed. The possibilities are endless. However, if this gets into the wrong hands, it could mean disaster. That is another reason why I need your guild to escort him. There are dangers and such, sure. But if this information is given to the people with ill intentions, who knows what they will do with this information. Lost Magic in the hands of a Dark Guild... I'm sure you understand." Alister explained.
"I do. And I will have to consult my guild, to see if they are willing to take on this mission. When would they be leaving?" Basil asked.
"Sooner rather than later. However, take your time and get back to me when you can." The old man stood. "You've come a long way Basil. Prison, then a guild. It seems you've left your past behind."
"It was a hard decision, but I knew it was time to move on. Thank you, Alister. For everything. If you hadn't come to me, I would still be in the same spot, brooding." Basil smiled.
"Bah! I didn't so a thing. But, you and this researcher are the only people I've really come to trust. It's the least I could do. I'm glad that we could have this chat, Basil. It's good to have some normalcy once in a while." Alister said with a smile.
"Normalcy, huh. Well, it's not like we were ever normal. It's good to see you, old friend. Here, let me walk you out." Basil offered. The two men exited the guild.
-Magnolia Town, Women's Dorm-
Luna was sitting on her bed, writing in her journal. She's been writing in it ever since she left Lunae. She needed it. It was her way of venting all the heavy emotions she felt. She wrote about her sister, and about her new guild mates. She wrote about how she feels, and how she thinks about things. She wrote about the time she spent on her jobs. She wrote about her adventures in Magnolia and most importantly of all, how she was able to find her footing in forgiving Lyra. Luna looked up at the clock, seeing that it was getting late. She sighed and closed her book, slipping it into the drawer on her nightstand. A knock came on her door. She got down from her bed and opened the door. Viperion was standing there.
"Luna-san, good evening. I hope I didn't wake you up." Viperion said.
"No, you did not. I was just finishing up. Is there something I can do for you, Vi-san?" Luna asked. Luna moved aside and allowed the Fenrir Ant to enter. They both sat at the small dining table in Luna's apartment.
"I had a question. I would go to Fiora-san, but I believe you'd be the better friend to ask." Viperion explained. Luna nodded.
"I am all ears, Vi-san." She replied.
"How does one, woo a potential mate?" The Fenrir Ant asked. Luna was caught off guard.
"Woo? You mean, court them?" Luna asked a bit surprised.
"Is that the correct word for it? I'm not very knowledgeable on the subject. In my colony, the male would attract a mate with a dance. But the dances are more of a show of strength and dominance. It's more of a competition than a display of affection. I'm not sure if it's the same for humans." Viperion explained. Luna blinked, then placed a hand on her chin, thinking.
"Hmm, I can see how it could be confusing. What about you, Vi-san? Do you have any feelings for this person?" Luna asked.
"Feelings... hmm... well, I like them. They make me feel nice inside. I like it when they smile, and when they're happy. I want them to be happy and safe. Is that how it feels when you like someone?" The ant asked.
"That is a good start. Love is a complicated thing. It is different for everyone. I could tell you what I think, but I do not know what kind of love you are looking for. Do you want them as a friend or as a mate?" Luna asked. Viperion scratched her chin, deep in thought.
"I'm not sure. I haven't really thought about it. I've only known this person for a few months." She admitted. Luna tilted her head.
"Is this person Gideon-san?" Luna asked. Viperion jumped in her seat.
"W-what? I never said that!" She stammered.
"Well, you have been spending a lot of time with him. And I have seen him pet your head on several occasions. In fact, the rest of the guild has noticed it too." Luna stated. Viperion blushed.
"I... I just like it when he does it." She admitted. Luna smiled.
"That is alright, Vi-san. Gideon-san is a kind and strong man. I am not surprised that you have taken a liking to him. Although, I do not know if you will be ready for the obstacle." Luna said carefully.
"Obstacle? What obstacle?" Viperion asked.
"W-well, courting, in human culture, takes a while... a-and you have to make sure the other person absolutely likes you... go on dates." Luna was blushing a tad. "Then you hold hands... then you k... k-" Luna paused, her face red.
"What is it, Luna-san? What comes next?" Viperion asked curiously.
"K... kiss!" Luna blurted. Viperion's face lit up.
"Kiss?! What's that? What does it look like?" She asked.
"W-well... it is... um..." Luna stumbled.
"Is it hard? Will it secure me a human male? Is it a challenge?" She asked excitedly. Luna held up her hands.
"Calm down, Vi-san. You are getting a bit too excited. What I am trying to say is that, in order for a human male to like you, you have to make sure they like you back. If you make a mistake, the male could reject you. Then you may not get the chance to be with them." Luna explained.
"Is that how it works?" Viperion asked, placing her hand on her chin.
"I cannot say for certain. It is different for everyone." Luna replied.
"I see... so, when do I do this kissing? Are there any rules?" She asked. Luna was finding it increasingly hard to give Viperion advice.
"I... would not know... I have not kissed a boy myself." She admitted nervously. Viperion blinked.
"Really? No boy has ever kissed you?" She asked, surprised.
"N-no. I have not had the chance." She admitted.
"Would you like to try? We could practice!" Viperion suggested.
"P-p-practice?! H-how do you mean?" The star weaver was glowing red.
"You can show me what kissing is with me." Viperion said nodding her head proudly. Luna's mouth dropped open.
"Vi-san... are you suggesting that we k-kiss each other?" She asked.
"Yes. I want to know if I am able to do such a thing. The way you describe everything makes it all seem like a challenge. As a warrior, I can't let such things stop me!" Viperion declared.
"I-I don't think we should..." Luna stated, blushing.
"Why not? If this is part of the obstacle that comes with courting, then we should overcome it together. It seems to be the best thing to do." The Fenrir Ant insisted. Luna's eyes darted back and forth. She wasn't sure what to do.
"You're my friend, Luna. If anyone can help me, it's you." Viperion pleaded. Luna sighed.
"I-I mean... W-well... If you insist." Luna stuttered out, not finding a way out of this. Viperion smiled.
"Thank you, Luna!" She said happily. Luna nodded nervously. She stood from her chair.
"L-let's stand. We should be face to face for this." She explained. Viperion hopped to her feet, looking fiercely prepared. Luna began to sweat a little. "W-well, first, I need to, um, face you." She said, turning to Viperion.
"Right!" She said facing her. Luna gulped.
"Well... first, um..." Luna looked into Viperion's eyes.
"Yes?"
"Y-you have to look into the eyes of the other person." She said. Viperion looked into Luna's eyes closely.
"Like this?" She asked. Luna nodded.
"Yes. A-and... then, you look down, just a bit." She instructed. Viperion lowered her gaze. Luna gulped.
"Now, what?" Viperion asked.
"W-well... now... I... you... um..." Luna stuttered, her face becoming red. She tried to speak, their faces closer than she expected. Suddenly a loud banging was on the door. Luna jumped.
"Blink! What the hell is all that yelling?! I'm trying to sleep!" Fiora yelled. Luna opened the door.
"Fiora-san, I apologize for the noise. Vi-san and I were merely talking." Luna said. Fiora yawned.
"Vi? What the heck are you doing over here?" Fiora asked the Fenrir Ant.
"Luna-san and I were talking about kissing. I wanted to know if I could do it. And we were-" However, Viperion was cut off.
"Were just wrapping up the talk. As you said, it is getting late. It would be best to resume this talk tomorrow, Vi-san." Luna stated as she pushed the Fenrir Ant out of the door. "Goodnight, Vi-san." She closed the door quickly. She clutched her chest. A Fenrir Ant almost took her first kiss. She was completely out of her element.
"That was weird." Fiora commented, "Why were you two talking about kissing?"
"I was asking Luna-san about courting human males. I want to court Gideon-san. However, there are a lot of steps that I did not realize." Viperion explained. Fiora was stunned.
"G-Gideon?! As in Gideon 'moleman' Granite?! Our Gideon?!" She asked surprised.
"Is there a problem with that, Fiora-san?" The Fenrir Ant asked. Fiora wanted to say something, but all she could think about was the kiss she gave Gideon the first time they met. Though it was to administer an antidote because of the Fenrir Ant toxin. But still!
"No. Not at all. Why are you looking for courting advice from Blink anyway? She doesn't exactly have the experience." Fiora said.
"What do you mean? Luna-san is the one who told me how to court human males." Viperion explained.
"Oh, really. Well, I guess she knows a lot about human males." Fiora said with a smirk, crossing her arms.
"Yes. I am learning a lot from her. She's my friend." Viperion said with a nod. "If you are interested, Fiora-san, I would love for you to join us. We have a lot to learn. The obstacle that comes with courting sounds difficult, but I will not give up. I will win the heart of Gideon Granite, and I will be the first of my colony to have a human mate!" She exclaimed. Fiora felt like she was just gut punched.
"Y-yeah. I'm sure you will. You'll... win... his heart." She said.
"Yes! I can feel it!" Viperion cheered. She turned to Fiora and bowed. "Good night Fiora-san. I have many things to get prepared." And with that, the Fenrir Ant ran off. Fiora was left alone, a dazed and confused look on her face. She spat air and turned to her room.
"I don't care who mole man gets with. Get with Vi for all I care." She muttered to herself. She stopped at her door. "I don't care, right?" She asked herself, "I mean, I'm sure I don't." She looked away. "But..." She opened her door and entered her room.
-Emerald Oasis, Main Hall, 2 weeks later-
The entire guild were gathered in the main hall. Basil was standing front and center with Alister and Ewan standing off to the side.
"Good, everyone is here. It's not every day I get to make such an announcement, however, the blessing of our Twilight Lotus has brought us a unique job." Basil spoke. He cleared his throat and began his explanation.
"By a show of hands, who is familiar with the Dragon King Festival?" He asked. Fiora, Lyra, Zephyr, Abernathy, and Coral raised their hands.
"That's more than I expected. Then I'll keep it brief and allow your guild mates to fill in the gaps. In the time of dragons, when they lived alongside humans, they held a competition for the dragons to fight. The winner would be crowned king. However, this particular festival resulted in the slaughter of dragons. A war of sorts broke out and it was dragon vs. dragon vs. Human. This was how Dragon Slaying Magic was passed to humans. As a result, dragons are no longer plentiful, with the few exceptions of the ones we know. But, what if I told you there was an entire third race that existed alongside dragons and humans?" Basil said.
"I'd say you were crazy." Gideon answered.
"And you'd be right, except it's true. However, proof is needed to verify the claims. That's where we come in. We will be escorting Mr. Ewan Thornhart to a ruin. While there, he will study the ruins and we will provide protection." Basil explained.
"And what's the catch?" Abernathy asked, "There's gotta be one, right? A bunch of mages protecting a guy while he studies a ruin."
"Unfortunately, there is no catch to mention." Alister cut in while walking next to Basil. "I'll be up front, we don't know what dangers we will find on the way to the ruin. But, the information we hope to find there is too valuable to pass up. If Mr. Thornhart is right, then we could be looking at a massive historical breakthrough."
"The pay will be high." Basil added. "Mr. Thornhart is already paying for our services, so this is a bonus." Basil turned to Alister with a smile. Alister looked to the guild master with wide eyes. He leaned in close.
"I did? I thought we were going to discuss it after the job." He whispered.
"It's a good negotiation tactic." Basil whispered back, "Get the deal while they're in a good mood. Besides, the pay isn't bad. You have money to spare."
"But I had that money budgeted for other things!" Alister argued.
"What could be more important than this?" Basil asked.
"B-books! I need books! Books and wine are all I need." The old man protested.
"I'll buy you books and wine. But what I can't do is have my wizards go out there without incentive." Basil countered.
"I can't afford to pay them! I'm an old man on a pension!" Alister replied. Basil turned away.
"Ahem, as I was saying, pay plus historical prestige are the outcome. How does that sounds?" He asked his guild.
"I'm in." Abernathy said with a shrug.
"I-I'll go as well." Luna offered.
"I'll go too!" Coral said, raising her hand. Basil raised his hand.
"I have already picked who will be going on this job. I there are other jobs we have been given, and I do need some of you to handle them. For this request I have chosen... Zephyr to lead it." Basil announced. Fiora burst out laughing.
"You're kidding, right? Zephyr lead a job?! We'll be lucky to make it out alive!" She said. "He's the worst choice for the job." She held her sides. The young mage looked to Fiora with blown up cheeks.
"I hope you haven't forgotten that Zephyr is an S-Class wizard, while you are not, Fiora." Basil said. The redhead paused. She was going to speak but closed her mouth. Basil nodded his head.
"You want me to lead the mission, master?" He asked. Basil nodded his head.
"I do. If I may explain, I choose Zephyr to lead the mission because, although he is young, he is the strongest of you all. It is best to have a strong leader if a threat arises. Plus, you need experience to lead others." He added. Fiora walked over and placed her hand on his head, giving him a heavy pet.
"Fine! Let's see what you got, pipsqueak." She commented. "Don't let us down." Zephyr looked up at her with a smile.
"Of course! I won't let you down, Fi-nee." He replied. Fiora stopped.
"N-nee?" She asked with surprise. She blushed a little. "You think of me as your older sister?" She asked. The young mage nodded.
"Of course. You're the first one who didn't treat me like a child. You respect me, even when you don't agree with me." Zephyr admitted. Fiora knelt down.
"We'll see about that. You still have a lot to prove, pipsqueak." She grinned. "But don't think I won't grill ya the whole time. I gotta know what my little bro is made of."
"You know what you have to do, Zephyr. Make me proud." Basil said. Zephyr saluted.
"Yes sir!" He exclaimed.
"With him I'll be sending you four." He pointed to Fiora, Gideon, Luna, and Viperion. "The more missions of this caliber you go on, the more experience you'll get. Eventually, you'll be handling these type of missions all on your own." He explained. "Plus, I'm sure you all want to see the results of this job." The four nodded.
"So, we leave when?" Fiora asked.
"Tomorrow. Pack accordingly. The journey is a week-long, at least. Be ready." Basil commanded. The chosen wizards nodded and went off to prepare.
"Uh, Lyra, a moment?" Basil called out.
"Yes?" The Star Weaver replied.
"May I speak to you in my office, privately?" He asked. Lyra shrugged.
"Sure." She replied.
The two entered the master's office. She sat across from him while he sat at his desk. Uno was still asleep while the other two were trying to wake it up.
"You will be going as well. I put Zephyr in charge of the job... but I need you to, well, guide him." He said. Lyra was surprised.
"You want me to babysit him?" She asked. Basil shook his head.
"No, not exactly. It's more like you're his second in command. Or rather, make sure he understands what it means to be a good leader. His rambunctiousness is endearing, but he needs to be taught how to make good decisions. I'd send Coral, but I would like for him to come back alive." He jest, but his face looked serious.
"You don't have to worry. I won't let anything happen to Zephyr. I'll keep an eye on him." She assured.
"Thank you, Lyra. I appreciate it. And, there is also the matter of your... S-Class exam." Basil said while tilting his head and keeping his gaze on her. Lyra stiffened.
"My exam? You mean the one that has to be approved by the magic council, the guild master, and the other S-Class wizards in the guild?" She asked. He nodded.
"Lyra, you and Abernathy are more than ready to take this exam. You both are talented wizards and have been in the guild for a long time. And your fights against Luna and Gideon proved to me all the more about my decision. Abe, I've already blackmailed. But you, I want you to really think about it. I would hate to blackmail you into taking the S-Class exam." He said. Lyra blushed slightly.
"You... really think I'm ready?" She asked. Basil smiled.
"I really do. You and Abe will take it when you return from the job. So, you have time to prepare and think. But I believe in you. You're a strong Star Weaver, Lyra. I've seen the power you possess. And I know you have what it takes to be an S-Class." He said. Lyra looked to the ground.
"Okay. I'll do it." She agreed. Basil nodded.
"Very well. That's all. And, make sure that Zephyr packs properly. Sylph will need a partner to... direct him." He said. Lyra gave a small laugh.
"Hehe, yes, of course." She replied. She then stood up and exited the room.
Basil watched her leave, thinking to himself.
"Good luck, Lyra. You're going to need it with that boy." He sighed.
-Magnolia Town, Magnolia Station-
The next day the group of six arrived at the train station, ready for the mission. Zephyr was nervous. He looked to the group as if he wanted to say something but turned away.
"Why did the master put him in charge?" Fiora said quietly enough for the younger members to hear. "I know he's an S-Class, but he's just a kid."
"Give him a chance. He's the one who earned it, not us." Gideon advised. Fiora crossed her arms.
"If it wasn't for that sparring match against Vi, I wouldn't be here." She grumbled.
"Relax, Fiora. I'm sure we'll be fine." Gideon reassured. Lyra kept her eye on Zephyr. She knew that his age made him immature. But the guild master was right, he needed this. He's always been doing jobs on his own or with one other person. But now, he needs to learn how to lead.
"Alright, everyone. I need you all to be ready. We're going to be traveling for a week at least. The journey is long, and there are dangers along the way. So keep vigilant." Lyra said in a cheery voice. "That's what you wanted to say, right Zeph?" She asked the young mage. Zephyr snapped out of his thoughts. He blushed a little and nodded.
"Yeah. Thanks, Lyra." He said.
"It's what I'm here for, chief." She gave him a small salute. In the distance, Ewan Thornhart had entered the train station.
"Sorry to keep you waiting. Old man tried to give me more books than I can carry." He explained.
"Hey, Ewan. Nice to see you again." Lyra greeted. "Everyone, you remember professor Thornhart, the client we'll be escorting on his research trip." Lyra said. She looked to Zephyr who was looking shy. She grabbed him and pulled to the front.
"Ewan is fine. I'm technically not the one paying." He said with a small smile.
"Well, Ewan, we'll be escorting you to the ruin site. Please tell us more about the site and the ruins, so we know what we're up against." He nodded. The train whistle announced their departure. They loaded their things and sat in the same seating. Viperion was staring at Ewan pretty intensely. He took notice.
"You have a question?" He asked trying to sound courteous.
"You have an eyepatch. You're missing a body part. Did you lose it in a fight?" She asked. Ewan tilted his head at this.
"Interesting way to ask." He replied. Everyone became nervous, realizing that they would be spending an extended amount of time with Ewan, who doesn't know Viperion's real origin.
"She's very curious." Lyra said to deflect from Viperion's odd statement. Ewan laughed.
"It's alright. I look intimidating." He said. He reached up to the eyepatch and touched it. "It's the price you pay when you do something you love. I was exploring a ruin in my youth. I was with an expedition group when we found a piece of art related to what they were looking for. Thing is, it was in a rather dangerous area. But, being young and excited, I climbed through some cracks in the rocks and made it to the piece. Then a slip caused everything to come down. I made it out, but at a price." He explained. "But, it's worth it. I got to see it, even if I can't see it now." He said. Viperion smiled.
"In my colony, such things are a mark of a warrior." She explained. Ewan raised an eyebrow.
"Colony?" He asked. Lyra laughed nervously.
"Oh, uh, she meant village! Y-yeah! It's what we call it! A colony! Ahem..." She said.
"Oh, right! A colony. Got it." He said with a nod. Viperion gave a small smile.
"Yes. My home is far from here. But I am here to learn more about humans, especially ones with such... knowledge." She said. Ewan seemed to understand.
"Ah, well, I am happy to help. Tell me, you've heard of the Dragon King Festival, right? It was a yearly tradition between the dragons and humans, where the strongest of them would compete for the title of Dragon King. It was a time of great importance and meaning, until Acnologia ruined it all. Have you heard of him?" He asked. Viperion nodded.
"Yes. He was a dragon that was defeated by one of the guilds in Magnolia Town." She answered. Ewan nodded.
"Yes, that's correct. He was a terrible dragon, he murdered thousands of dragons and humans alike. His name is forever burned into history, and his name will never be remembered fondly. That being said, this event ties into why we're going to the ruin. As your guild master explained, we're trying to find definitive proof that Wyverns lived alongside dragons and humans." He said. Viperion tilted her head.
"Wyverns?" She asked.
"Yes. Wyverns were the earth bound counterpart of the dragons. They were smaller but feral and held magic that was on par with dragons. They had a special connection to the land, and their magic was deeply rooted in nature." He explained.
"Ewan, if I may, if we do find evidence of Wyverns being a sentient and powerful race, what are your intentions?" Luna asked. He thought for a moment.
"Well, first and foremost, I would like to document and study it. I'm a scholar, so it's my job. And if we find any proof, I'd like to bring it back. The science community would have a field day. Although..." Ewan began. Everyone leaned in.
"The Dragon King Festival was the systematic destruction of the dragons as a race. Wyverns would have been involved in the conflict. The problem, there's no evidence, no fossils, no anything that shows what happened to them. As far as history is concerned, they just stopped existing. That's not possible, even in the chaos of the Dragon King War, there should be something." He explained. Everyone took the information. It was a mystery.
The group had passed the time in getting to know more history about Fiore and Earth Land. Ewan was knowledgeable and very good at teaching difficult concepts. After the week was done, they had arrived at Margaret Town. Everyone disembarked, except for Fiora. Gideon turned back around.
"Fi, what's up?" He asked.
"I'm not going out there." She said firmly. Everyone looked back to see where the two had gone.
"Why not?" He asked. Fiora beckoned Gideon to get closer. He did, allowing her to get next to his face.
"Because it's freezing, mole man!" She screamed. Gideon blinked.
"It's not that cold. Besides, you can wear a coat." He said.
"I don't have a coat! I don't like the cold! Why didn't you all tell me that it was going to be cold?!" Fiora questioned. She wrapped her arms around you upper body, shivering. Gideon shook his head.
"Your outfit works anywhere else but here. You didn't have the foresight to change?" He asked. Fiora began to catch fire. She glared at Gideon. He smiled, "There you go! Problem solved. Just keep doing that till we get you some proper clothes. Your Magic should be able to keep you warm." He advised. Fiora shook her head.
"Nope! I'm staying on the train!" She proclaimed.
"Fi, come on." He begged. She shook her head again. He sighed deeply. He stepped forward and began to grab at her.
"Wh-What are you doing?! Let me go mole man! I'll blow you up!" She threatened. Gideon placed Fiora on his shoulder and caught up with the rest of the group.
"Sorry about that, we're ready to go." He said.
"Is Fi-nee chan ok? Are you going to be ok? She's on fire." Zephyr stated. Gideon looked over to Fiora who was still on fire.
"Nah, I'll be fine. I've been hit with Fi's fire too many times. It's like being hit by a candle." He joked. Fiora scowled at him.
"I'm still gonna kill you." She promised. He smirked.
"That's what you say every time." He replied.
They continued onward through Margaret Town, the chill in the air nipping at their cheeks as they made their way along the cobblestone streets. The town, nestled at the foot of the imposing Mt. Hakobe, carried a quiet charm. Small plumes of smoke rose from chimneys, painting a picture of warmth and coziness against the backdrop of the frost-tipped mountains.
The streets were lined with quaint, timber-framed houses, their windows glowing with soft, inviting light. Locals, bundled up in thick coats and scarves, moved about their evening routines, casting curious glances at the newcomers. The faint aroma of freshly baked bread and a hint of pine wood burning in fireplaces filled the air, adding to the town's welcoming atmosphere. Ewan led everyone toward the inn.
"Fiora?!" A voice rang out. Fiora lifted her head and instantly blushed.
"S-S-Seraphina? What the hell are you doing here?!" She asked. A young woman, about Fiora's age, came up to them. She had long black hair and icy blue eyes.
"My guild is here." She explained. But her demeanor changed, realizing she was speaking to her rival. She held a finger up, "Fiora, just because we're both here, doesn't mean we're going to battle it out." She warned. Fiora flared up even more and began to try and escape from Gideon's grasp. He let her go and she marched right up to Seraphina.
"I still haven't forgiven you for calling me out with that letter. It's embarrassing! And I want to beat the crap out of you for it!" Fiora exclaimed. Gideon walked over to the two girls.
"Sorry, but we can't start a fight here. Fi, please. We're here on a job." Gideon said reminding her.
"Sera-chan, whose this? Friends of yours?" A sensual voice asked. Behind Seraphina came a voluptuous figure with lavender-blue hair that fades to pale blue at the tips frame, hypnotic eyes that seemed to shift color.
"No. Just some people I know, master." She said with a bow.
"Oh, well that's a shame. We could use some excitement around here. My name is Yulia, and I'm the master of the Oath Talisman Guild. It's a pleasure to meet you." She introduced herself.
"Likewise. I'm sure your guild is lovely." Ewan commented. Yulia nodded.
"Oh, it is. They are all darlings." Her eyes moved to Fiora. She gave a little smile.
"You must be Fiora, the one she won't stop talking about." She said. Seraphina blushed.
"Master! Stop it!" She exclaimed. Yulia chuckled.
"Ah, the rivalry of youth. It brings a tear to my eye." She said. Zephyr stepped forward, mesmerized. Sylph sat on his head.
"You're pretty." He said. Yulia giggled.
"Thank you." She replied.
"Zeph, you can't just say that! That's rude." Sylph reprimanded.
"But she is. She's pretty. Right, Gideon?" Zephyr asked. Gideon was surprised by the question.
"I-uh... well... I mean..." He stuttered. Yulia giggled.
"Why thank you. You're too sweet." She said. She walked over to Gideon and grabbed his cheek, giving it a little squeeze.
"What were their guild, Sera-chan?" She asked over her shoulder.
"Um... They're part of Emerald Oasis, master." Seraphina replied. Yulia froze. She turned around.
"Emerald Oasis? Oh my, that's quite a name to live up to." She commented. Lyra jumped.
"Why's that?" She asked.
"I know your guild master, Basil Greenbloom. He's such a sweetheart. I just wish grew a little backbone. He lets the other guild masters tease him and he takes it in stride with his bashful little smile." Yulia placed an arm under her breast and the hand holding her other arm's elbow that was holding her chin. Lyra looked into her eyes and instantly covered her mouth to not giggle. Luna looked over.
"What is so funny?" She asked. Lyra waved her hands.
"Nothing, nothing." She replied. Viperion approached Yulia.
"Tell me the secret to your strength..." She said. Viperion was instantly drawn to her feminine beauty. And yet, she was able to detect the strength underneath it all. Yulia giggled.
"Sorry, love. You'll have to unlock your own potential. But, you're already so pretty. It shouldn't be too hard for you." She complimented. Viperion was shocked. She wasn't sure if she was being condescending or not. Yulia giggled again.
"Oh, don't worry. I don't mean anything by it. Anyway, Sera-chan, we've errands to run. It was nice meeting your "not friends". Good luck with your job." She said. She walked away.
"Master, please don't embarrass me in front of others." Seraphina pleaded chasing after her. Everyone turned to Fiora.
"That was the rival you talked about?" Zephyr asked.
"Yeah, that was her." Fiora confirmed.
"She seemed nice." Zephyr noted.
"She's a snake." Fiora replied. Gideon chuckled.
"She didn't seem that bad. If anything, I'm surprised you had a friend before me." He joked. Fiora glared.
"Oh, you wanna go, mole man? Because I can take you!" She yelled. Gideon smirked.
"She seems like someone you would be friends with. You two have the same fiery temperament." He said. Fiora blushed.
"Don't compare me to her! She's the worst! She's always trying to one-up me. And she's such a stuck up, annoying, insufferable, prissy little witch!" She exclaimed. Gideon nodded.
"So, she's not that bad?" He asked. Fiora frowned.
"I'm gonna set you on fire, mole man." She threatened. Zephyr and Sylph laughed.
"We should hurry up and find the inn. We need to get ready for tomorrow's journey." Lyra noted.
-Margaret Town, Town's Edge-
The next day came and they were dressed for the weather. They prepared for their journey, the looming presence of Mt. Hakobe dominated the horizon, its snow-capped peaks glistening under the morning sun. The mountain stood as a silent guardian over Margaret Town, its rugged slopes and treacherous paths shrouded in a veil of mystery and allure.
Whispers of the mountain's unforgiving nature circulated among the locals, speaking of blinding blizzards and perilous cliffs hidden beneath the serene blanket of white. Yet, amidst these daunting tales, there was an undeniable beauty in its wild, untamed spirit. The mountain's icy facade reflected the early light, casting a spectrum of colors that danced across the snow like shards of stained glass.
The air grew crisper as they neared the base, the scent of pine and cold mountain breeze mingling together, invigorating and chilling all at once. Mt. Hakobe was more than just a mountain; it was a testament to nature's unyielding power and majesty, a challenge to those daring enough to uncover its secrets. There was a sense of anticipation in the air. Ewan held the Wyvern Slayers Book in hand. Lyra and Zephyr approached.
"Mister Ewan, do you have a map or anything to this ruin?" He asked. Ewan gave an unconfident smile.
"Unfortunately, no." He replied. Zephyr groaned.
"So, we're just going to be wandering around like fools?" He asked.
"Not quite. There are clues in this book that indicate the location. But, they won't be useful till we're actually in the mountains." He explained. He knelt a bit to show the young leader.
"Here. See this shape? I know this is a mountain. And this black mark is a cave entrance. We just need to find the entrance and explore inside." He explained.
"But how are we going to do that?" Fiora asked. Gideon stepped up.
"I'll lead us through. I'm used to navigating through mountains." He offered. Fiora was stunned.
"What?" She asked.
"What can I say? I'm a born mountaineer. I spent most of my life in the mountains, mining and exploring. I know my way around. Just trust me." He smiled. Viperion chimed in.
"I can help, Gideon-san! My special sense of smell can sniff out a path." She said. Ewan was intrigued.
"Really? That's fascinating!" He exclaimed.
"Yes. In my colony, we are taught to use all of our senses to survive. And I was trained in the art of scent tracking." She explained.
"Oh, that sounds interesting! May I ask, where is your colony?" He asked. Lyra jumped in.
"U-Uh! She's from the east! Yes, she's from the east. It's a small community. Small. So small that it's easy to forget. Isn't that right, Vi?" She asked. Viperion nodded.
"Right. Very small." She agreed. Ewan was intrigued.
"Yes, I see. That's fascinating. So, you have a unique sense of smell. What else can you do?" He asked.
"I have many skills." She replied. Ewan nodded.
"I'm interested in seeing what you mages can do. One last thing. I won't be much help in a fight. Unlike you all, I'm not a mage." He explained.
"You're not?" Zephyr asked with surprise. "With the way you carry yourself and your stories, I thought you were." He admitted. Ewan smiled.
"No, I'm a scholar. I study things like magic and history. I just have a lot of knowledge, but I don't have any magical abilities."
"That just means we have to work all the harder, right Zeph?" Sylph asked with excitement. "Remember you're in charge. You have to step up." She reminded. Zephyr sighed.
"I know, I know." He replied. Gideon patted his shoulder.
"Don't worry. I'm here to help, just say the word." He said. Zephyr nodded.
"Thanks, Gideon. It means a lot." He replied.
"Alright, everyone. We're approaching the mountain. I hope you all have dressed accordingly." Ewan announced, looking at Fiora in particular. She huffed.
"It's fine. I'll be fine. I'm just gonna stay close to Gideon. He's a natural heater." She said.
"Says the natural heater." He quipped.
"Don't start with me, mole man. I'm not in the mood." She replied. Gideon chuckled.
"Alright, alright. Just stick close. You can even ride on my back if you want." He offered. She punched him in the arm.
"Shut up, idiot. I'll be fine. Let's just get going." She said.
Everyone faced the mountain, their collective gaze fixed on the snow-capped peaks that loomed overhead. The mountain stood as a silent guardian over Margaret Town, its rugged slopes and treacherous paths shrouded in a veil of mystery and allure.
The wind whipped about heavily, threatening to take anyone careless into the frozen depths. The group made their way up the mountain, their footsteps leaving a trail in the snow. Zephyr and Sylph led the way, using their magic to redirect the harsh winds. Viperion used her nose to detect any dangers. Gideon led the group through safer passage ways, or rather the safest he could find. Luna, Lyra, Fiora, and Ewan followed the rear. Ewan, being a non-magic user, was in the most danger. However, he showed no fear.
"Do you have any idea where the cave is?" Luna asked. Ewan shook his head.
"I haven't seen the shape yet. But if we get a good vantage point, we may be able to find it." He replied.
"That's the plan." Gideon said.
"We just need to keep looking." Luna added.
"Hey! We've got company!" Fiora yelled. Everyone got into position, ready to react to the incoming danger. They looked about trying to spot it. However, with the thick blizzard they couldn't see anything.
"Are you sure you saw something Fi-nee?" Zephyr asked.
"Yes, I'm sure. I saw a huge shadow moving towards us." She replied.
"Zephyr, we should be ready to take off." Sylph suggested. Zephyr nodded.
"We have to be prepared to leave in a hurry. Everyone, get ready!" He ordered. The group readied themselves, Zephyr and Sylph stood ready to manipulate the wind. Gideon and Viperion stood side by side, ready for anything. Ewan moved closer to the group, only to suddenly get snatched up by a pair of talons. He yelled out to the group.
"Help me! Something's got me!" He cried.
"Ewan!" Luna exclaimed. The group rushed to save him but were pushed back in a flurry of snow. Zephyr reacted quickly.
"Galestride: Windcutter!" He cast. The wind moved at the speed of a knife, cutting through the snow. The group saw a massive shadow fly away with Ewan in its talons.
"Quick! We have to follow it!" Lyra shouted. Gideon stepped forward.
"Zeph! How fast can you go?" He questioned rapidly. Zephyr gulped.
"I can go pretty fast, but it depends on Sylph!" He answered.
"Get ready to catch Ewan!" He shouted. Zephyr's face twisted with confusion. Gideon punched the snow, trying to feel for the ground. He was able to get a finger on it. He began to tug at it with extreme force. He ripped out an enormous piece of rock.
"GeoGuard: Rock Catapult!" He cast. The rock flew like a bullet, aiming directly at the shadow. The rock slammed into it, knocking it off course. It released Ewan from its grip, who was now plummeting toward the ground.
"Now Zeph!" He ordered. Zephyr nodded.
"Galestride: Windcutter!" He cast. The snow was split once again. The air mage had a clear line of sight toward the researcher, "Sylph, give me boost!" He commanded. Sylph twirled her hand, gathering wind at Zephyr's feet.
"You're ready!" She yelled.
"Galestride: Gale Force!" He shouted. He dashed towards Ewan at an incredible speed. He reached out his hand, "Grab my hand!" He commanded. Ewan reached out grabbing it. But before they could clear away from the figure, it spread its wings wide, pushing the snow completely from the area.
"It's an Ice Griffin." Zephyr said with wide eyes. The Griffin let out a terrible roar, shattering the ice below it.
"Zeph, get out of there!" Sylph shouted. Zephyr reacted, "Galestride: Air Shield!" He cast. A barrier of wind surrounded him and Ewan. The Griffin's talons hit the barrier, breaking into pieces.
"Zephyr!" Lyra called out. She began to sprint toward him. She quickly realized that she wouldn't make it in time. The Griffin was closing in on him again, ready for a second attack.
"Blazing Soul: Explosion!" Fiora cast. She punched the air, sending a skull shaped fireball at the Ice Griffin. It made impact, knocking it away from the pair.
"Hurry and get out of there, Zephyr!" She shouted.
"Galestride: Wind Runner!" He cast. His feet were immediately empowered with speed. He and Ewan made their way back to the group. The Ice Griffin twisted in the air and let out a roar once more. The creature was much closer, everyone being able to see the size of it. It's upper body was that of a lion with white thick fur. The lower half was an eagle, the claws sharp. The wings looked as if they were made of icicles. Its beak was long and razor sharp. The eyes glowed an icy blue color. It was horrifyingly beautiful.
The Ice Griffin charged them, it's maw open to snatch one of them up. Viperion stepped forward, having taken off her jacket.
"Fenrir magic: Shell Burst!" She cast. Her exoskeleton appeared. She reared her fist and punched it with all her might. The exoskeleton cracked with a sound similar to shattering glass, hitting the beast. The Ice Griffin let out a cry of pain. It retreated back a bit, pushing the group with a massive gust of wind. Luna began to weave.
"Shadow Weaving: Shadow Ribbons!" Small tendrils came out of her shadow and pulled everyone together. "I am sorry. But my shadow is not big enough for me to use my full power." She apologized.
"It's alright, Luna. We can take care of it together!" Fiora encouraged. Gideon stood with his fists raised. Viperion took her stance.
The air crackled with tension as Fiora's flames roared in response to her rising emotions. "Looks like it's time to turn up the heat!" she declared, her Blazing Soul magic igniting into a ferocious inferno that danced menacingly towards the Ice Griffin.
Zephyr, with a confident nod to Sylph, coordinated their efforts. "You ready, Sylph?" he asked, to which she replied with a playful twirl, "Always!" Together, they unleashed a flurry of wind blades, cutting through the blizzard with precision.
Gideon's arms morphed into their familiar stone form, his expression one of unwavering focus. "This one's going to be big," he grunted, launching a massive boulder towards their foe, the ground shaking under the impact.
Lyra weaved her hands, bending the light around her. The air shimmered as her illusions spun into existence, each moving with an eerie, moonlit glow.
Viperion, in her element, charged forward, wings extended. "Let's see how it likes a taste of its own medicine!" She hissed, her stingers from her wrist slicing through the air, dripping with a potent toxin.
The Ice Griffin, caught off guard by the multifaceted assault, recoiled and prepared for another strike, its icy feathers bristling. Viperion sliced through its side only to get struck by one of the wings. Her form hit the snow, sending up a puff. The Ice Griffin opened its maw and begin to collect a swirl of air and snow.
"Everyone move! Its casting a spell!" Sylph warned. The group began to move, but the creature's spell was faster than their reflexes, launching a beam of ice magic. The force of the spell knocked Lyra backwards and right into Fiora's back, sending them both tumbling to the ground. Gideon rushed toward the spell before he was suddenly blown backwards by the gusts of icy winds, slamming into Luna, knocking her back down as well. Ewan began to sprint down toward Viperion. The monster's gaze caught on to the movement and turned its entire body toward him.
"Kid! Get up!" He yelled to the Fenrir Ant as he continued his sprint. The snow resisted his every movement but his determination to be helpful fought back. These people were protecting him on this journey; he would do whatever he could to help them. A shadow appeared over Ewan, prompting him to look up only to see the Ice Griffin's glinting eyes staring down at him with hunger and malice. The lion shaped head swooped down to grab him, only to be met with the grip of Viperion. Her wings flitted with all their might. She roared in effort, trying to hold its mouth open.
"Ewan-san! Thank you!" She exclaimed to him. Ewan nodded but found himself within striking distance of the creature.
"Blazing Soul: Explosion Impact!" Fiora cast. She appeared overhead, her fist reared and collecting a blazing orange magic that matched her fiery passion. She swung her fist down, hitting the Ice Griffin in the top of the head. It screeched and bucked wildly, throwing Viperion and Ewan in opposite directions.
"You played dirty you bastard! But now we have you on the ropes! You won't survive this!" Fiora roared. She brought her fist back, charging it with more Blazing Soul. She was about to cast her spell again, when a beam of icy magic struck her in the shoulder, sending her tumbling to the ground. The Ice Griffin flapped its wings, sending a whirlwind of icy magic at the group. Gideon reacted by covering everyone with his GeoGuard.
"Luna, can you use your shadows to pull them away?" Gideon asked with urgency. She shook her.
"There isn't enough darkness. I can only do small things." She responded. Lyra nodded her head in determination.
"We don't have to defeat it, just make sure we get it away, right?" Lyra affirmed. She ran out of the cover and sprinted toward the creature. The Ice Griffin screeched and began to collect another beam of magic.
"Lunar Illusion: Jabberwocky!" She weaved her hands while strings of light stitched together to form the legendary creature. It roar in challenge, rising into the air above the griffin
"You have plenty of shadow now! Go for it!" She yelled. Luna spotted her sister's plan. The Jabberwocky's large size had created a pocket of shadow. She took a deep breath and weaved her hands.
"Shadow Weaving: Shadow Ribbons!" The dark tendrils shot out, many in number and wrapped around the creature. Luna pulled with all her might, the shadow tightening. She roared in effort, her weaving hands straining with great effort. Viperion flitted in and grabbed on to the shadow tendrils and began to pull as well. Fiora stood, her shoulder aching from the icy blast. She tried to move but couldn't, her body slowly down due to the freezing magic. The Ice Griffin's body fought against the restraints, muscles bulging in effort. Gideon held up the cover, ensuring to keep everyone protected.
"There's chasm over here!" Ewan yelled trying to make his way back to the group. Zephyr looked to Sylph.
"I'm going to invoke the contract, Sylph. I need you to give me everything you got." He told his wind spirit. She nodded.
"If you need to, I'm with you Zeph. We can do this!" She encouraged. Zephyr nodded his head and focused.
"I invoke our contract!" Zephyr yelled as he took to the sky. Wind wrapped him like a cloak as Sylph's body became one with his magic. The wind shredded away to reveal his green hair and pointed ears.
"I'm going to hit him with hard! Get ready everyone!" He warned. He raised both hand into the air. The harsh wintry wind of the mountains began to calm as Zephyr collected magic above him. It swirled into a sphere of air. The Ice Griffin noticed and tried to fight against the shadows. But the shadow was too strong.
"You guys pull harder!" Luna ordered. The Ice Griffin was forced to land, its talons digging into the ground. It roared with urgency.
"It's not going to kill it, But I'm knocking it into next week! Galestride: Tornado Burst!" Zephyr cast. The air sphere fired off like a cannon, blowing snow away and leaving a trail in its wake. It hit the Ice Griffin head, shattering its icy beak. The impact launched the creature away from the battleground and toward the chasm. Its roar echoed until the sounds were lost.
"Yes! We did it!" Viperion cheered. The group cheered, celebrating their victory.
"Well done everyone. We were able to work as a team and persevere." Lyra complimented.
"But now we're sitting ducks if something else decides to attack." Gideon pointed out. The group nodded, knowing they had to move quickly.
The ground began to crumble under their feet. Everyone froze in place.
"Please don't tell me I did that." Zephyr begged. Toward the mountains peak a wall of snow began to descend. An avalanche. Zephyr's and everyone else's eyes widened.
"Sylph I need your help! Pull everyone together!" Zephyr yelled as he ascended toward the sky.
"Right! Wind Shield!" She cast. A dome of wind wrapped around each person. The domes pulled toward one another creating a large circle of wind. The group was suspended in the center. Zephyr entered and held his arms out. His body strained getting ready for the impact.
"This is all I can do, I'm sorry." He told Lyra. Lyra nodded her head.
"It's alright. We can do this." She told him. Zephyr nodded and focused.
"Galestride: Gale Expand!" He cast. The wind barrier grew in size, stretching out beyond the wind shield. The avalanche's rumbling caused the snow beneath them to give way. Soon, the wall of white towered over them. Zephyr strained, trying to keep the barrier up.
"Everyone, hold on to each other! We'll have to ride it out!" Gideon warned. The avalanche crashed down on the barrier, sending snow flying in all directions. Sylph held her chosen's shoulder, trying to help him manage the magic. Lyra watched in worry, hoping the young air mage could hold out. His arms wobbled against the overwhelming force. Sweat dripped down his forehead as he tried to maintain the spell. The barrier began to falter, the wind growing weaker. Zephyr began to panic.
"Sylph! I can't hold on!" He yelled, his voice full of fear.
"Yes, you can! We're almost there, just hang on!" She encouraged. The barrier began to break, the air cracking like the sound of shattering glass. The barrier began to shatter, the avalanche's force pushing through.
"Zeph! Don't fight against it! Just let it go!" Lyra cried. The young boy looked at the group. Fiora was being tended to by Gideon and Luna, Viperion looked to as if asking how she could help. Ewan's face was pure confidence as his experience in these type of situations shown through. But it was Lyra's face that affect him the most. Her eyes were full of concern and worry for him. He couldn't let her down.
"Ok. We're going to make it!" He yelled. Zephyr closed his eyes, focusing all his energy. He squeezed them with all his might trying to keep the barrier strong. He let the barrier be taken by the path of the avalanche. He heard the group cry out in surprise, but it was soon drowned out by the whipping winds. Zephyr felt like his body was being pulled apart. He felt like his magic was going to explode. He began to scream. He couldn't handle the pain anymore. The barrier rolled them around in all directions. Gideon held on to Fiora in his arms as Viperion and Luna held each other. Ewan tried to help but could only be taken by the force of the barrier being tossed about. Soon, any sense of direction was all but gone. Zephyr's eyes began to drop with tears, the pain becoming intolerable. Sylph could only watch as her chosen did everything in his power to keep them safe. After what felt like an eternity, the sounds of rock giving way was heard as their barrier crashed into a cliff face. The barrier rolled on a hard surface. Suddenly, the barrier gave out and everyone spilled out on to the ground. There was barely any light, the only thing visible was the remnants of light that shone through the snow. Lyra's voice was the first to be heard.
"Zeph!" She screamed as she scrambled to her feet. His body had reverted to its normal blonde hair. She lifted him into her arms. "Is he ok Sylph?" She asked. The wind spirit flew to her face and touched his forehead.
"He's alive. But he's exhausted." She informed. Lyra sighed in relief.
"I'm sorry everyone... I tried..." Zephyr's weak voice cut through. "I... I couldn't hold on anymore..."
"Don't apologize. You did your best. You saved us." Lyra consoled. She stroked his hair. Tears formed in her eyes. Making sure he was ok was her responsibility. She promised the guild master that nothing bad would happen to him. And she failed. The tears dropped onto his cheek.
"Don't cry Lyra-nee... I only did what was expected of the leader." He teased. She laughed, wiping her tears away.
"Alright, leader. You need to rest now. You were amazing." She told him. He nodded and fell asleep in her arms. Everyone gathered around the boy, happy he was alive.
"Is he going to be ok?" Viperion asked kneeling next to his sleeping form.
"He will. He just needs some rest." Lyra explained. Viperion smiled in relief. "Now, let's focus on finding a way out of here." She ordered. Everyone nodded and began to look around. Fiora grunted in pain as she rolled her shoulder. Weak orange flames crawled up her body.
"Better. That damn thing. If it wasn't snowing I would have burnt it to a crisp. Still, this will do." She stated. Gideon checked on her wounds.
"How bad is it?" He asked.
"Just bruising. Nothing I can't handle." She assured. Luna approached her.
"You were spectacular Fi-chan." She complimented. Her face gave a sad smile. "I only wish I could have done something sooner." She said. Fiora pushed her with her other shoulder.
"Stop. You did what you could Blink. That's all that matters. We're alive and that's what counts." She reassured. Luna's eyes shined in relief. She then turned to Viperion. "Vi-chan, you were amazing too." She praised. Viperion smiled.
"Gideon-san was the one that gave me confidence. His resolve to save Ewan-san was brave." She admitted. Gideon blushed.
"I didn't do anything special." He insisted. Lyra chuckled.
"He's always humble, even when he's doing something great. That's just Gideon." Lyra counter. Viperion walked over to Gideon.
"You did as a warrior should. You didn't let your fear get the best of you. You were brave and selfless." She complimented. Gideon blushed.
"It wasn't anything like that. I just reacted to the situation." Gideon replied bashfully. Fiora's face began to scowl.
"Glad to see everyone is alright." Ewan expressed while walking toward the group. "It seems that Alister chose correctly in hiring your guild to help me along with this expedition. I'm in your debt." He thanked. He held up the book he had been carrying. It was glowing.
"What is that?" Luna asked. Ewan opened the book and landed on a page with a peculiar marking.
"It seems to be reacting to something nearby. Judging by the layout of this place, I thought we landed in a cave. But upon closer inspection, we're in a temple of some sort. I'd call us landing here lucky, a little too lucky. However..." He trailed off as he allowed the book to start floating and it began to move along the air toward a particular direction.
"When we were in that air bubble, the book suddenly started pulling. I'm no expert in magic but I think it pulled us all toward this place while we were being whipped around. " He added. He grabbed the book once more. Gideon approached Zephyr and laid him on his back.
"Then it's time we find out what it wants." The rock wizard said. Everyone nodded and followed Ewan.
The halls of the temple were made of polished white stone with gold inlay. There was no light, yet they could still see. The air was stale and smelled of ancient dust. The temple was full of intricate symbols etched into the walls. Ewan approached each different symbol and drew them in a journal.
"Fascinating. I can't believe it. This is the Wyvern language. It's been lost to the ages." He explained. The group moved along the corridor. The pull of the book was strong and only grew stronger as they seemed to get closer to something. In the distance there was an intense glow. Ewan picked up his pace. His explorer's intuition was ringing.
"Through here!" He called out. The group arrived at a door. It was covered in more wyvern writing. Ewan was busy copying everything down. The book pulled with such force that he was forced to let it go. The door groaned as it slowly opened. The group was hesitant on what they would find. But Ewan's eyes were focused. He ran inside.
"This is amazing!" He called out. The group entered. Inside was a circular room. A large column of light stood in the center. The book floated around it.
"What is it?" Viperion asked. The light slowly dissipated to reveal a piece of Lacrima. A giant Lacrima that was full to the brim with magic. Ewan approached in awe. He had never seen a Lacrima so powerful.
"This is amazing. It's a Wyvern Lacrima! The amount of magic it holds is amazing! It's so much, that I can't even read it! We've found it Alister! Proof that the Wyverns did exist in the past! This is unprecedented!" Ewan exclaimed. The book slowly floated over to the Lacrima then dropped to the ground.
"We need to get this back to the guild! But how?" Ewan spoke to himself as he looked the Lacrima over. He stopped as he had gotten closer.
"Do you hear that?" He asked. The others looked to each other.
"Hear what? Ain't nothing going on." Fiora replied.
"Listen!" Ewan shushed her. Still, there was nothing. Lyra approached the researcher.
"Are you sure you're ok? Maybe you took a hit to the head or something." She asked. Ewan was starting to feel strange. His heart was racing. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up. His ears were ringing. Then he heard it.
"This Lacrima... there's... there's something inside." He gasped. The group froze.
"Inside? There's something inside that Lacrima?" Gideon asked.
"It's a sealed chamber. The Lacrima is the key. We just need to open it." He affirmed. He reached out and touched it. The Lacrima glowed and pulsed. Suddenly, a rush of magical energy filled the room. The Lacrima began to fill Ewan with power. The group was shocked by what they were seeing.
"Ewan-san! What's happening?" Lyra cried. She pulled on his arm but it was no use. The man was consumed by the Lacrima. It poured everything it had into him. The book opened and began to glow. The runes began to fill the room with light. The floor began to rumble. The group was forced to the ground. The Lacrima's power was too great for the room to handle. The rumbling stopped without warning. Ewan let go and stumbled backward toward the ground. The room was filled with light and it was nearly blinding.
"Ewan-san! Are you alright?" Lyra asked as she made her way to him. Ewan panted, the feeling of the Lacrima's magic flowing through his body was euphoric. His breathing was fast and erratic. He took deep breaths as he gained control of his senses.
"The Lacrima... It had magic inside. I can't describe the amount, but..." He trailed off as he looked around the room. The light from the Lacrima had been contained inside the Lacrima. The room was back to the way it was before. His eyes caught sight of the book. From behind the Lacrima a small figure trotted over and looked over the book. It then looked to everyone.
"Oh wow! So many creatures!" It chirped. It walked forward and everyone's faces twisted into utter confusion. In front of them stood a puppy. But there was something strange about it. It was grey and white with accents of blue throughout its coat. Its ears were upright and fluffy. But the most prominent feature was her pink hair. Hair that sat on her head like a person.
"Is... is this a Wyvern?" Viperion asked kneeling to get a better look. Ewan's eyes grew wide.
"It was you. You were calling out to me. You were in that Lacrima?" He asked. The puppy nodded and hopped back. She looked up at the Lacrima.
"I was trapped in it. But, I lost count on how long." She explained. She ran around it to get a better look. As she approached her initial starting point she looked to Viperion.
"And no, I'm not a Wyvern. I'm a Lupicyn." She informed. The group was silent. Ewan slowly approached.
"You're a Lupicyn? You look just like a... a puppy." He stuttered. The Lupicyn smiled.
"My name is Tiffy. What's your name?" She asked. She approached the man and sniffed his hand. As he was about to pet her she bit his hands. He pulled away in surprise. Before he could respond a swirl of magic circled the Lupicyn. Her appearance changed from that of a puppy to a young girl. She had a child-like face with bright eyes. Her pink hair adorned with her large fluffy ears. Everyone's jaw dropped at the sight. Except Fiora, whose eyes were bright and sparkly.
"She's so..." She began. Every turned in anticipation. "CUTE!" She squealed as she scooped the Lupicyn into her arms.
"Fiora-san! Do not scare her!" Luna called out. But Tiffy didn't mind. She liked this fiery woman. She turned back to Ewan.
"I know who you are. You're Ewan. You've been looking for the Wyverns. When you touched the Lacrima you absorbed the magic inside. It must have released me and I sensed your presence. I tried to call out but the Lacrima kept me from doing so." She explained. Ewan looked to his hand.
"I absorbed magic? What magic?" He asked. Tiffy smiled.
"Wyvern Slaying Magic. I'm surprised you were able to contain it. Usually, humans can't handle it without turning into a Wyvern." She explained. The researcher's eyes grew wide.
"Wyvern Slaying Magic? I can't believe it." He sighed. "It exists. It's unbelievable..." The group looked at each other. Tiffy suddenly began to growl.
"Oh no. He's coming. I can feel it. We need to get out of here. We need to run!" She cried. Everyone turned to each other.
"Who's coming?" Gideon asked. The group jumped as the floor shook once again. The room threatened to truly tear apart this time. On the other side of the wall a small portal opened. It began to enlarge slowly until giant claws ripped through and forced it to open faster.
"Oh no! He's here. He's here!" She cried. The group looked on as the portal revealed a massive shadow. It grew larger and larger until it reached the ceiling. The group huddled together as the shadow formed a distinct shape. The light revealed the cataclysmic threat that appeared. A Wyvern.
