After Scaramouche received Childe's text, he started to clean up the house further. He did the dishes and tidied up the main room. A book fell off the table as he walked by and opened up to a page with photos that had a piece of paper in almost pristine condition if it was not for some dried wet spots and dried blood on it. Scaramouche, unable to contain his curiosity and started to read the letter.
Big Brother!
Hi! It's me, Teucer! When are you coming home? I miss you, same with the others.I have tried to ask about you and when you're coming home but mom just goes silent and doesn't do anything for the rest of the day. When you come home we should play mister cyclops together again! We can also go fishing! I cannot wait for you to come home so we can be a family again. Everyone seems so sad without you here and sometimes mom cries when you're mentioned. I know that once you are able to come and stay with us everyone will be happy again.
Love you, and miss you Big Brother!
Scaramouche looked withered when he was done reading the letter. He had a feeling that Childe missed his birth family but he didn't know how bad it got for him. He pulled out his phone and when he went to his messages, he was bombarded with multiple texts from his other cousins. He rolled his eyes and opened the conversation with "Auntie".
Scaramouche: Is Childe still allowed to visit his family? I think that may have been part of the trigger for him.
"Auntie": Unfortunately, his mother showed up intoxicated to the last session and started to scream and throw stuff at Childe blaming him for her actions. I can look into seeing if he can at least have a visit with his siblings though.
Scaramouche: Please do. I think it'll help him. Especially since I found a letter carefully preserved from his brother.
"Auntie": Ah, I see. I know that he is very family focused, regardless of if it's us or his birth family. Also, you should reply to your cousins... they're getting annoying.
Scaramouche: Only cause you said so auntie. Later.
Scaramouche closed out of her conversation and looked at the few cousins that were still messaging. He sighed and decided to read La signora's texts first.
La Signora: Damn it, Scaramouche answer me! I want an update on my dear cousin.
La Signora: I see you're still online. Seriously, answer me!
La Signora: Typical, don't respond and ignore me. K, don't be surprised when I show up randomly.
La Signora: That's it, as soon as I can I'm going to you.
Scaramouche: Really? "Dear cousin"? He wasn't that dear to you when he was begging for someone to be here with him and wouldn't let me leave. Don't pull that shit with me. Childe isn't here, he's at a friends house and is extremely safe there. I do not need you here and Childe definitely does not need your toxicity here while he's fucking healing. You will not be welcomed in this house, you need to prove that you actually fucking care and aren't trying to get some sort of sick satisfaction from being told "I'm sorry about your baby cousin." If you put this on blast, I'll make sure you never see him and expose you for the shit person you are. All you care about is your follow count and pity. Stay away from him if you don't actually care. He needs his family, not the vlogger/ tiktoker you became. You broke his fucking heart, Rosalyne. He begged you to be with him, or to let someone be with him but no, your fucking video was more important.
La Signora: How dare you accuse me of using Childe for views. I did not even know what he needed someone for, after all knowing him it was stupid and about his family visit. My account is going viral and I could not risk it. After all, I need to keep promises to my followers. If I had known what he was going to do, I would have immediately went to him.
Scaramouche: You fucking conceded bitch. Did you know that his mother screamed and started to throw stuff at him in an intoxicated state during his last visit and he's not allowed to see his family for the time being due to that. Your damn page and channel is not more important than a family member. We could have lost him had I not been staying with him. Don't get me wrong, I'm not just mad at you, I am mad at quite a few of you.
La Signora: Kuni... I- Please let me see him. I need to make sure he's okay. I need to see it with my real eyes. I know he's safe with you but damn it Scaramouche we could have lost Childe... I need to see him. I haven't posted anything about him and I will not breach his privacy or trust. No videos, just ensuring he's okay. I promise.
Scaramouche: Let me think about it and ask him. If he wants to see you I will not stop it, but I choose when the visit is.
La Signora: I can live with that. Columbia has been extremely worried too. At some point you should let her visit.
Scaramouche: I'll think about it. I don't want to overwhelm him. I gotta go back to cleaning up. Talk to you late Rose.
Scaramouche tossed his phone onto the couch seat next to him and sighed leaning back into the sofa. He looked up to the ceiling in thought. It would be nice to have someone else here but at the same time, it could set off Childe. "The poor kid just wants his family." Scaramouche looks down and picks up the book Teucer's letter was in and notices that it has photos in it. He quickly sees that there's a photo of his birth family and multiple of his birth siblings then ones with their family. Childe wasn't in enough of the photos Scaramouche noticed. He frowned and would have to bring that up to "Auntie" next time they spoke. Scaramouche put the photo book away and quickly went upstairs and laid down on the bed he took over. When he was comfortable, he pulled out his phone and started to read. After a few moments Scaramouche was starting to fall asleep when he received a text. Scaramouche recognized the number as Diluc's and quickly opened it to find a photo of Childe and Kaeya curled up together in the cutest way possible. He could feel himself smiling before sending Diluc an "Thank you" and saying good night.
Rosalyne was a lot of things, but she wasn't a heartless witch. She felt deep regret about forcing Scaramouche to stay with her as soon as they found out how badly the kid had been hurting. She looked down to her lap in disappointment when suddenly drops of red dripped onto her cream skirt. She chuckled to herself as she looked into the mirror and took in the pallor of her skin. Tears rolled down her face as they mixed with the blood trailing down from her nose. She blamed the nosebleeds on the cold weather and quickly went to clean up her face and skirt.
After a few moments of holding a tissue to her nose to stop the bleeding, it was finally stopped. She quickly changed into dark colored pants and came out of her bathroom as soon as Il Dottore came into her room. "My fair lady, have another nosebleed? Why didn't you come to me? After all, I'm the family doctor." He questioned before standing next to her who was brushing her hair. "It's just the weather. Y'know my body doesn't react to the cold too well." She shivered as if a chill went through her and up her back. "La Signora, you really should let me check you over. Make sure everything is okay." He said looking over the platinum blonde who only shook her head. "I'm fine, I'm tired. Please leave so I can rest." She requested as he had a small pout before turning away and walking out the door. She looked back up at her phone before plugging it in and quickly falling asleep.
Childe blinked awake and sat up slowly rubbing his eye yawning. He quickly stretched until he was able to hear the satisfying crack of his back. A moment after he woke up he looked around the room before grabbing his phone and texting his cousin.
Childe: Good morning! I'm awake!
Scaramouche: Morning sleepyhead. Rosalyne wants to come and see you. Are you okay with it?
Childe reread the text a few times before thinking and sighing. He knew she felt guilty and was blaming herself over him. Sighing he quickly replied to Scaramouche.
Childe: Yeah, I'd honestly like to see her too.
Scaramouche: Alright Kid, I'll let her know.
Childe: Cool, see you at rehab.
Childe looked down at his phone and opened the chat he had with his cousin. La signora was complicated and had a tendency to either be extremely mean or extremely nice. It was either one or the other. He quickly reread the conversation he had with her and started to silently sob. He looked over to see Kaeya and Diluc still asleep. He stood up and started to silently tip toe out of the room before "Where do you think you are going?" was whispered from right behind him. Nearly jumping out of his skin and refraining the urge to scream and wake up anyone else made him out of breathe momentarily. The ginger paled slightly when he saw the red head looming over him with his arms crossed. "I'm sorry, I just wanted to be alone for a few so I didn't wake anyone up." Childe replied facing to look at the redhead. "Do you want to talk about what's wrong?" The ginger nods and walks with Diluc to two large mirrors where he opens one. Childe realizes that he can see everything looking out, but realizes they were just looking at their reflections. "This is my office. After trying to figure out the best way to work and keep an eye on my brother I came up with this idea." The ginger nodded before sitting down in a chair with his back to the one way glass, making sure Diluc has a constant watch over the blue-haired teen.
The two sat in silence before Childe sighs and slumps further into his chair. "I don't know if you know this, but I am actually adopted." Diluc's eyes flash with understanding and he nods. "My family, they were originally from Snezhnaya. When I was younger, I didn't truly understand what happened but now I do and it really messes with me. My mother, she hasn't been mentally well in a while. She kept randomly leaving me in areas and just disappearing. I wouldn't be able to find her anywhere. I was usually able to find my way home... but the look she gave me... it haunts me to this day." Childe's eyes were wide in fear and he was shaking. "Then, one day she decided to take me out for a car ride. She promised we were going somewhere it was a long drive and I fell asleep... The next thing I knew I woke up in the middle of nowhere... I had no idea where I was or what to do. I didn't have a phone or anything with me, so I just walked until I found the closest place in sight. As soon as I walked in I collapsed. I could hear voices but I didn't register what they were saying." Childe stops for a moment before continuing. "The next time I woke up, I was in the hospital and my father and siblings were the only ones there. My mother ended up being sent to an institution having pleaded guilty to child abandonment for reason of insanity. My father tried to fight for me but I ended up being removed... for my safety. It seemed that I was the only one removed. After being in the system for a bit, the Fatuus family found me. Scaramouche and I were brought in around the same time. At first he was quite cold to everyone and refused to interact. When he found out about what happened to me he kept watching over me. He acted more like my older brother than my actual older siblings. He was always there for me... then he disappeared when he was eighteen. He never mentioned it to anyone but it hurts. It hurts when someone you can depend on and someone who's been with you just ups and leaves. It broke me. I found out he was always keeping tabs on me and made sure that I would have been able to get in touch with him if I needed it. The day you dropped me off and he was there... I had a visit with my family. My mother showed up intoxicated... My family and I are only allowed to send letters. Teucer, my youngest brother, sent a letter that I received the night before Scara came to live with me... I was stupid and left out bottles and he saw my blades with them.." Childe stops looking at the ground. "He put two and two together. He's trying to become a therapist for kids like me... now he's stuck with me." Childe stopped talking after that and just let himself cry. Diluc stood up and pulled the ginger teen into his arms and held him while he cried.
Diluc wasn't sure what else to do other than let the kid cry in his arms. He pat the gingers back while letting him cry out. "I don't think he'd agree with you on him being stuck here. It sounds like your cousin really does care for you." It seemed like Childe cried a bit harder at Diluc's comment. After Childe was able to calm himself down he continued telling Diluc his story. "The night that my mother visited and was screaming profanities and said 'I wish you were never born' I tried to reach out to my family. I begged for someone to be there with me, I begged for someone to talk to me... everyone ignored it. One of my cousins was doing a video for her channel and told me to 'Shut up, you're a spoiled whiny brat crying about not getting your way with something. No wonder your mother left you.'... she didn't know what happened. She thought I was fucking around. She's going to be coming to see Scaramouche and I soon." After stopping himself from talking Diluc nods and gestures a hug to Childe who happily accepts it. "I want to see her but... it hurt when she did that." Childe looked away. After a moment Diluc released him from the hug and looked at the clock "Let's go get something to eat. I have to get you, Lumine, and Kaeya to the program soon." Childe nodded before Diluc led him out of the office back to Kaeya. While Diluc was gently waking Kaeya up Childe went to get dressed. When he exited the washroom he saw Kaeya holding onto Diluc sleepily and the elder rolling his eyes before pinching the bridge of his nose. Out of the corner of his eye Childe saw Kaeya smirk before pulling his brothers pants down and sprinting out of the room laughing hysterically. Diluc stood there for a moment shaking before turning and calmly walking out the way his brother did. "Kaeya. I. am. not. playing. games. right. now." The redhead said through his teeth calmly. Childe who was witnessing everything wanted to laugh but when the elder man was mad, it was better to be out of sight. Kaeya ended up running back into the room when Diluc went to search for him in another room. Kaeya put the pants on his brother's bed before hiding in his brother's office. Childe could hear Diluc's footsteps getting closer. When Diluc came in he looked at his bed and saw his pants. Sighing he quickly put them on before walking into his office. Childe heard a small yelp come from Kaeya before he decided to walk downstairs to the breakfast table.
"Are you serious? Kaeya we have guests! Do you know how inappropriate that was?" Diluc scolds Kaeya calmly. "It was just for fun. You overreact a lot, dear brother." Diluc glared at Kaeya before turning to leave the room. "Get dressed and come downstairs." Diluc said roughly before leaving the office with Kaeya trailing behind him. "Can't I just go in my pajamas?" Kaeya asked only to be met with a silent look from Diluc before sighing and grabbing his hoodie and jeans. While running to the restroom attached Diluc went to the restroom down the hall to get changed before heading downstairs and being greeted by the twins, Xiao, and Childe. "So, what was all that running around and chaotic laughter earlier?" Lumine asked Diluc teasingly as Kaeya came down from their room. "Kaeya decided to play a prank-" "That got Diluc's undies in a twist apparently." Kaeya cut Diluc off who side-eyed him. Feeling the tension Xiao cleared his throat "We should start eating before we head off. After all, we have to get Lumine, Childe, and Kaeya to their program and us to school." Diluc nodded "I'll take them to the program. You two plan on walking, correct?" Aether and Xiao nodded as they started to fill up their plates with food. Xiao was able to get almond tofu and Aether just filled his plate with meat. Kaeya had his arms on the table with his head resting in them. Diluc sighed while looking at his brother "Kaeya, you need to eat." The blue-haired teen lifted his head slightly before shaking it and visibly flinched when food came by. "Can I wait in the car? I'm not hungry." Kaeya asked with his head still in his arms. Diluc only stared at Kaeya before shaking his head. "One half piece of toast. Have that and you can wait in the car." Kaeya looked horrified at the thought of eating anything. After a few moments of realizing the redhead wasn't going to budge and whined. Kaeya sat up and walked out of the dining room and laid down on the couch. He heard footsteps following him and could feel someone looking at him. "Go away." Kaeya said before turning into the sofa. He could hear footsteps coming closer and stopping by where he was. "What's wrong?" Aether's worried voice carried over to Kaeya gently who looked over at the blonde. "My stomach just hurts a bit. I'll be fine and I'll eat later." The starry-eyed man said he continued to rest on the sofa. Aether went back to the dining room and turned to Diluc "You should talk to him. He's saying his stomach hurts." Diluc looked up at the blonde boy before looking at the clock. "We should get going, otherwise Lumine, Childe, and Kaeya are going to be late." After a moment Diluc collects both his and Kaeya bag before tossing the bag at his brother. "Get up. We're going." The redhead said before walking off not waiting for the blue haired teen to follow. Kaeya got up slowly from the couch and followed everyone out to the car. He swiftly sat on the passenger side and let his head rest on his shoulder. Lumine gets in behind Kaeya while Childe gets behind Diluc. Xiao and Aether wave them off as they started to walk to school. Once the two were safely out of the way Diluc started to back up and start his drive.
Childe brought out his phone and opened his conversation with Scaramouche.
Childe: We're on our way to the program.
Scaramouche: Cool, see you there.
After Childe received Scaramouche's response, he opened a conversation with Kaeya.
Childe: You really should apologize to your brother.
Kaeya: Fuck off, it's none of your business.
Childe: 1. When you pulled that prank on him, I was there. 2. You embarrassed him in front of guests.
Kaeya: He overreacted, it's not like I pulled his boxers down.
Childe: That shouldn't matter Kaeya.
Kaeya: Seriously fuck off.
Childe: Y'know, your brother has so much patience with you, the fact he hasn't snapped is a miracle.
Kaeya: ... I know, okay! I know I pissed him off but if I say anything right now, he's just gonna be madder at me.
Childe: When Lumine and I get out, stay in and talk to him.
Kaeya: I don't think that's the best idea.
Childe: You're both going to be overthinking about everything and blaming yourselves. It's better to talk sooner rather than later.
Kaeya: ... I don't think I have the courage to
After Kaeya sent the last text, the ginger didn't send a reply. "Hey Diluc, when you drop us off Kaeya wants to talk to you." Kaeya paled and tried to look as small as possible in his seat. He could feel his brothers glance at him a few times before he heard a small sigh. "If he wishes to speak to me, he can talk to me himself." The redhead said as they pulled up to the facility. When they arrived Lumine and Childe were quick to jump out of the car while Kaeya stayed behind. "So, what did you want to talk to me about?" Diluc said gruffly turning off the car and turning his full attention to his brother. "I'm sorry about earlier. I thought it was a funny prank, but you don't have a sense of humor." Diluc rolled his eyes before unfastening his seatbelt and jumping out of the car. "That's how you apologize?" Diluc asks Kaeya who shrugs. The redhead scoffs and walks Kaeya inside "When you're ready to actually apologize to me, let me know." After making sure Kaeya, Lumine, and Childe were safely in the program, he went to school.
"Dude, you're overreacting over a prank. You gotta chill a bit." Lisa said while poking at Jean causing the blonde to laugh. Aether and Xiao were silent about the matter and wouldn't comment about it. "Yeah, but the way he acted afterwards...he hasn't been listening to me recently. He even refused to eat earlier today when I told him to just eat a half piece of toast." Jean giggled out "Maybe he just wasn't hungry, or his stomach was hurting?" Diluc shook his head "I don't think so. He was running around." Jean frowned along with Lisa who shared a look with each other. "Just, don't shut down. Don't push him away. If you need to be alone, ask Xiao or Aether to keep an eye on him. This was a prank yes, but it made you feel bad which isn't okay. You have to explain to him that 'Hey, pranks are okay but pranks like this or that are inappropriate.' That way he knows you were hurt by it and doesn't do it again." After a moment Diluc looked down at his tray. "He doesn't listen to my lectures. Maybe I need to be more strict or actually punish him. I hate being the bad guy. I wish Dad was still here, that way I could just be a kid with Kaeya instead of being like his parents." He pushed his tray away and let his head rest against the table.
After a few moments Aether pulled out his phone to see that Lumine had messaged him.
Lumine: So Kaeya is freaking out because he fucked up earlier and said something snappy to Diluc.
Aether: Diluc's trying to calm himself down and figure out what to do.
Lumine: Unfortunately for them both, Kaeya's been giving everyone attitude and it's not going over well with the mentors. Honestly I think it's Kaeya's defense mechanism. The mentors are probably going to talk to Diluc when he gets here, or have Scara do it from the looks of it.
Aether: Should I warn Diluc?
Lumine: Honestly, I would.
Aether: Wish me luck.
Aether put down his phone with a sigh. "Hey Diluc? Lumine texted me... apparently Kaeya has had a full attitude with everyone he talks to today. The mentors may talk to you about it when you go to pick him up. Lu said Scara might talk to you about it too." The look Diluc had worried Aether slightly.
When Diluc arrived at the facility and stepped in he saw his brother pouting in a chair with crossed arms with Scaramouche standing over him with crossed arms as well. Scaramouche turned to Diluc as he came in. "You little brother has had a ton of attitude and snippy remarks to people here. He thought that since he was in a bad mood, he should make everyone else be in a bad mood." Diluc stepped over to the two silently. He grabbed Kaeya ear and pulled it. "Ow! What the he-" Kaeya was cut off by Diluc saying "I don't want to hear a single word of complaint from you. When we get home we're going to have a chat. You can't behave like a spoiled rotten brat and get away with it. You know better. Apologize to Scaramouche." At that the redhead let go of Kaeya's ear and watched him. "I'm sorry for my behavior, Scaramouche. It won't happen again." After Kaeya apologized to the short man, Diluc grabbed Kaeya by the ear again and dragged him out to the car silently. Scaramouche looked extremely surprised at the brothers while watching them leave. Lumine who was silent during the interaction followed just as quietly as she had been. Childe looked at Scaramouche who shrugged and motioned with his head for him to leave with him.
Kaeya refused to look anywhere but the ground or out the window. He was thankful for the silent ride, especially since Lumine was with them. When they pulled up to their home Lumine quickly jumped out and left the two brothers alone. Diluc got out first and as soon as Kaeya's seatbelt was off he pulled him by the arm and directed them to his office. Once Kaeya was sitting in a chair and Diluc was leaning against his desk the redhead looked at his brother. "What's with your attitude today?" Kaeya shrugged and kept looking at the ground. "Why were you giving your mentors a hard time?" Kaeya avoided looking at Diluc as he shrugged again. After a moment Diluc sighs "Were you just taking your anger out on them without realizing it?" Kaeya shakes his head 'no'. The redhead messaged the bridge of his nose. "What about earlier today? You thought I was overreacting to your prank but that wasn't a prank." After a moment Kaeya remarks "I'm sorry." without sparing his brother a glance. "You're grounded for three days. No video games, no laptop, no TV, no friends over, no going out anywhere. You're allowed to keep your phone but if I catch you on any streaming services or on any mobile game, I will change the WiFi password and disable them from your phone." After a moment Kaeya slammed his fist on Diluc's desk "No, why the fuck do I get punished when it was a harmless prank. You don't even know what fucking happened today." he quickly ran out of the office slamming the door on the way out. Diluc followed after him "Kaeya! Get back here!". Unfortunately for the Diluc, Kaeya was faster and left the house. When Diluc heard the door slam he cursed and looked out to see which way he could have gone.
"Diluc? What's wrong?" Lumine and Aether asked simultaneously while Xiao was listening from behind them. "Kaeya ran away after I tried to ground him for his attitude today. He punched my desk so his hand is probably fucked up. Damn it. Why is he so agitated today." Diluc said feeling anxious. "Okay, Lumine, you message everyone you and Kaeya know to keep an eye out for him. Try to message him as well. Let us know if he responds." Aether quickly commands. Lumine nodded before adding "I'm helping search for him though." After that Aether suggested that Xiao and him search towards the left while Diluc and Lumine search to the right. Each person goes off in their direction while Lumine texts almost everyone in his contacts about Kaeya running away. She quickly hears back from a few.
Amber: Eula and I will search our area and help find him.
Albedo: I'll see if I can't find him. He may talk to me.
Childe: I'll let Scaramouche know and ask if we can help search
Jean: Lisa and I are looking as well
Rosaria: Seriously, remind me to talk to him later. I'm joining you in searching for him.
That was only a few texts that Lumine saw that they actually read. She opened up a conversation and sent a text to a certain blue-haired teen.
Lumine: Diluc isn't mad at you. He's concerned and there's a lot of worry.
Lumine: Kaeya, please come out. It's okay to be irritated, upset, or sad. We're not going to judge you for it. Just please come home.
Lumine: Kaeya, it's going to rain. Come on, let's go home.
The texts reflected in the starry eye of the teen who only cried and curled into himself. He was confused, scared, and wasn't sure how he got where he was. He could understand what Lumine said to him but he wasn't able to comprehend it. Another text popped up.
Diluc: Kaeya, where are you? Let's get home, where it's safe and warm. I promise I'm not mad. Let's talk about what's aggravating you. I know you don't know and that's okay. We can try to figure it out. I just want you to be safe.
Diluc: Come on Kaeya, please tell me where you are. I'll come get you. Lumine's with me.
He could feel tears run down his tanned checks. His brother has never-ending patience, concern, and love for him. He couldn't understand why. Before he could lock his phone screen he saw another text come across his screen.
Childe: Dude, where are you? Your brother is freaking out and everyone is searching for you. Scaramouche and I will find you if we join. You should go home now, before this turns into a big mess that neither your brother or you would want to deal with. You need to talk with Diluc. He's not going to berate you for what happened.
Kaeya: He grounded me for it. They said I was having an attitude... who wouldn't have a fucking attitude about that.
Childe: I know, but he wasn't there to see what happened. Had it not been for you stopping me from doing anything I might have seriously harmed that person. Scaramouche wasn't aware of what actually happened until after I told him. He was pissed and called the boss about it.
Kaeya: It doesn't matter.
Childe: Kaeya, it matters. You should have never been treated like that, especially by a staff member.?
Childe: C'mon Kae, talk to me. Where are you? I'll come to you.
Kaeya: No.
Kaeya looked over all of his contacts and all of his incoming messages. He knew how to stay hidden if he didn't want to be found. The only people possibly able to find him were Diluc, Scaramouche, and Childe. Kaeya sighed and looked out over the vineyard. There was one area his brother refused to go to that wasn't known to Scaramouche or Childe. Kaeya stayed in one of the apple trees that was close enough that he could see people coming towards him, but far enough so that they would not be able to spot him. Diluc would go inside the manor of the winery but never in the vineyard or beyond that. After a few moments of ensuring no one was nearby Kaeya allowed himself to relax and fall into a light slumber.
"Has anyone found him?" Childe asked Diluc as he and Scaramouche ran up to the redhead who solemnly shook his head. "We can track him via his phone if you allow us to." Scaramouche offered as he brought out his laptop. "Do it." The redhead did not hesitate. "Hey Diluc? Did Kaeya tell you what happened?" Scaramouche inquired while looking into Kaeya's location. "No, he didn't. Did something happen?" Diluc's gut dropped in worry as Scaramouche looked between Childe and the redhead. "The only reason I know is because Childe witnessed it. Lumine wasn't there for any of it. One of the newer interns saw him and knew his name. He was an asshole to Kaeya.
