It was just after midnight when Elena got home from a nightclub that her friends had dragged her to in downtown Chicago. At first, Elena really wasn't interested in going out tonight, mainly because she just wasn't in the mood, and not to mention she had to work in the morning. Opening the front door, she stepped in, flipped on the light, and looked down. Elena gasped when she noticed a trail of blood on the floor. She quickly drew her gun, pointed it, and slowly started to follow the trail of blood, which ended right in front of her parents' room. Taking a deep breath, with a shaky hand, Elena slowly turned the doorknob and pushed the door open.

Quickly turning on the light in her parents' bedroom, Elena gasped in horror as she found both of her parents dead in bed. They had both been shot in the head. Elena quickly grabbed her cell phone and dialed 911.

Two hours later, Captain Liz Forbes and her partner, Damon Salvatore, walked out of the parents' room after examining the crime scene. Elena just sat there as she felt Damon sit next to her. Elena slowly looked up, and her breath started to get shaky when she watched the EMTs carry her parents in body bags out the door.

"I'm so sorry for your loss, Elena," Liz said softly, turning her attention to another detective, Katherine Pierce, and asking her to get Elena's statement before walking out of the house.

As a detective for the Chicago Police Department, Elena has seen many deaths in her line of work and was trained to handle them professionally. But she never thought it would ever happen in her own home; she never thought someone would actually murder her parents in cold blood.

" Elena? Are you up for some questions?" Katherine asked as she got her notepad and pen ready.

"Can't it wait until tomorrow, Katherine?" Damon asked, speaking for Elena.

Elena shook her head. "No, I don't want to wait until tomorrow. I can do this," Elena answered as she sat up straight, took a deep breath, and kept herself under control.

"Elena, you don't have to do this right now," Damon said softly, not wanting to pressure her into doing anything she didn't want to, especially after what had just happened tonight.

Elena looked at Damon for a moment before nodding. "I'm okay, I can do this," she said, then looked at Katherine. "Go ahead and ask me anything."

Katherine nodded as she sat down in one of the chairs. "Okay, can you tell me where you were this evening?"

Without hesitation and in one breath, Elena answered her question. "I went to a nightclub with a few of my friends. My friend Caroline thought it would be a good idea if we all went to this new nightclub that's downtown."

"Are you talking about the new VIP nightclub that just opened?" Damon asked, wrinkling his nose a little. He had heard about the new nightclub, and from what he'd heard, it wasn't anything good. Damon made a mental note to ask her later.

After writing down Elena's answer, Katherine nodded and asked her another question: "What did you do the moment you came home?"

Elena took a deep breath and answered Katherine's question. "I walked in and turned on the lights. When I looked down, I noticed a trail of blood. So I took out my gun and started to follow it. When I saw that it ended right in front of my parents' room, I slowly opened their door. I turned on the light, and that's when... I saw them dead. Both had been shot in the head."

Katherine nodded as she finished up. "I think that's enough questions for now." She then reached over and placed a comforting hand on Elena's wrist. "I'm really sorry for your loss, Elena," Katherine said with sympathy.

Elena nodded slightly. "Thank you."

The next morning, Elena quickly opened her eyes as the scene from last night replayed in her head. She walked into her parents' room and saw them both in bed, dead. But what she doesn't understand is who or why they were killed. She won't rest until she finds her parents' killer and puts them behind bars for life.

Thirty minutes later, after her shower and getting dressed, she walked into the kitchen to notice Damon standing over her stove, cooking breakfast. "Damon, what are you doing here?" she asked, slightly confused, especially since she hadn't expected to see him in her kitchen at nine in the morning.

"I didn't feel right leaving you here by yourself. So I slept on the couch." Damon answered as he set a plate of food and a fresh cup of coffee on the kitchen table. "Sit down and eat," he said, nodding his head towards the empty chair.

"Thanks," Elena said softly as she sat down, took a sip of her coffee, and started eating her breakfast. She then sighed deeply. "Something doesn't make sense to me. Why would someone murder my parents?" She asked, trying to figure it out.

"I don't know. But we'll figure it out, and I promise you, we will do everything we can to catch your parents' killer." Damon said softly as he reached over and held her hand, smiling softly.

Elena nodded as she returned the smile. "I know, and I do appreciate it."

As soon as Elena walked into the police station, everyone in the station was already telling her how sorry they were about what happened to her parents and how they were there for her, which Elena was very grateful for. Just as Elena finally made it to her desk, her friend and fellow detective Caroline Salvatore quickly wrapped her arms around Elena's neck, giving her a hug.

" Elena, I am so sorry." Caroline said as she let Elena go and then looked over at Bonnie. " How is she? Is she doing okay?" Caroline asked Bonnie even though Elena was literally standing right in front of her.

Elena then waved her hand in front of Caroline. "Caroline, I'm right here and I'm fine." Elena answered as she took off her jacket and placed it behind her chair.

"Are you sure?" Bonnie asked, raising her eyebrow for a moment, as she wanted to make sure that Elena was actually fine.

Elena nodded. "Listen, I know it seems like I'm pretending that nothing happened last night, as if I didn't just lose my parents or the fact that someone murdered them. Because I'm not fine with it, but I can't just sit back and do nothing about it."

"What are you going to do?" Caroline asked.

"Simple, I'm going to do whatever I have to do to find my parents' killer and bring the bastard down," Elena answered when she looked over and noticed Rose sitting at her desk. "Excuse me for a moment."

"Hey, Rose, did you get the files I asked for?" After everyone left her place last night, Elena texted Rose requesting the case files on her parents' murder.

"Yeah, it's all here. Are you sure that you want to do this?" Rose asked as she handed the files over to Elena.

Elena nodded as she took the case files from Rose. "Yeah, I'm sure. Thanks for this." She said, turning around and walking back to her desk to get started on the case.
