The Fat Controller's Railway was very busy. All the engines felt rushed off their wheels. On some nights, Philip had so much shunting to do that he was too tired to back to Wellsworth. Luckily, Stafford and Stanley were happy to share their shed with him. The little diesel boxcab was grateful, but he felt sorry for leaving Edward on his own.
One day at Knapford Yards seemed no better than the last. Philip and Stafford raced about shunting trucks and coaches into place. Philip was so distracted and racing around so much that he didn't see Edward at all…and he didn't notice an unfamiliar engine rolling through the Yard.
Evening came and Philip was worn out once more as he backed into Stafford's shed. "Oh, why did it have to be so busy again today," he moaned. "Edward must be feeling terrible that I've left him alone for so many nights."
Stafford felt sorry for his friend. "It's alright, Philip," he said calmly. "Edward has worked on the North Western Railway for a very long time. I'm sure there have been many nights where he's had to sleep alone. Didn't he tell you he understood that you've been busy?"
"Well…yes."
"Then everything will be alright."
The next morning, Philip was up bright and early. He had some trucks to take to Wellsworth for Bill and Ben and he wanted to apologize to Edward. He raced along the Main Line as fast as his little wheels would carry him and when he reached Wellsworth, he backed into the Yard as quickly as he could. "Good morning, Edward!" he called. "I'm so sorry for leaving you on your own again! I…" Philip gasped. Resting next to Edward in the Shed was a diesel he had never seen before, and it was one of the biggest diesels he had ever seen.
Edward and the diesel jumped when they heard Philip. They yawned and mumbled as they realized what was happening. "Oh, good morning, Philip," murmured Edward. "I thought you might have been busy again yesterday."
Philip starred at the unfamiliar engine. "Who are you? What are you doing in my Shed?"
"Philip!" Edward scolded.
"It's alright," said the diesel. "Pleased to meet you, Philip. My name is BoCo. I'm an old friend of Edward's and I'm one of the Fat Controller's engines, just like you."
"Really?" Philip asked. "But I've never seen you before."
"That's because he's been helping on the Mainland," replied Edward. "He's been there a long time, and he just came back yesterday."
"Oh…well…thanks for keeping Edward company, BoCo. It's been so busy that I haven't been able to make it back here at night."
"Yes," said BoCo, "Edward told me all about you, but for now, we must get to work. Are those the trucks for the China Clay Pits?"
"Yes," chirped Philip, "they are."
"Wonderful, I can take them on my first train to Brendam Docks." And BoCo's engine roared into life.
Everything ran as usual that day. Philip went back to Knapford, Edward and BoCo pulled trucks and coaches all day and the other engines couldn't be happier to see their old friend back again.
As the sun started to go down, Philip was tired, but he still wanted to get back to Wellsworth, so he collected some fuel tankers and made his way along the line. When Philip arrived, Edward wasn't there, but he did see BoCo leaving the sidings. "Hullo, BoCo!" he called. "Another busy day, wasn't it?"
"Indeed," the big diesel sighed, "it's high time I settled down for the night."
"Oh, where are you staying?"
"Well…I thought I could sleep here."
Philip was confused. "But…Edward and I share this Shed."
"I thought you worked in Knapford," said BoCo.
"I do, but-"
Just then, Edward arrived. "Hullo, you two. What's going on here?"
"Edward," Philip jumped in, "BoCo wants to use our Shed, but I told him that we sleep here."
"There are certainly more engines on the railway than before," said BoCo thoughtfully. "Usually, I would sleep here for the night, but there were times when I would join the engines at Tidmouth or Knapford. Both Sheds were full when I made my last run here."
"Oh, there should be room in Stafford's shed," said Philip hopefully.
"I'm afraid BoCo's too big for a shed like that," replied Edward, "…but you know, you have been sleeping there for many nights now and it must be tiring to travel back here every night. Why don't you try sleeping there all the time?"
"But…I like our Shed…and we've had such fun together."
"I know," said Edward kindly, "but sometimes, a change can be a good thing. I used to sleep at Tidmouth, but after spending some time here, I realized it would be easier to work on my Branch Line if I lived here instead. Henry wanted to make things easier when he started helping Murdoch, Hank and Hiro with their heavy goods trains to the Mainland and now, he lives with them in Vicarstown.
"I also heard that Stanley moved back to Great Waterton not long ago, so there's plenty of room for you at Stafford's shed. Besides, you two work there almost all the time. Wouldn't it be easier to sleep there after a long busy day?"
Philip thought for a moment. "…I…I suppose so, but what about the trucks I always bring here in the morning and at the end of the day?"
"It wouldn't cause that much trouble," said Edward. "Thanks to you, some of our deliveries have been arriving early, but you can only pull so many trucks on your own and sometimes, you can't bring all of them with you."
"I suppose, but Edward…I'll miss you."
Edward sighed. "Oh, Philip, I'll miss you too, but we'll still see each other almost every day just like I always see my old shedmates from Tidmouth."
Philip was silent for a long time. "…Alright, if it will help everyone else, I'll move to Knapford Yard."
"Good for you, Philip. Would you like me to ask the Fat Controller for you?"
"No, if you, Henry and Stanley can ask him yourselves, then so can I."
"Wonderful," chuckled BoCo. "Now, why don't we make your last night here special for all three of us?" And they did. While BoCo stayed on one side of the Shed, Edward made room for Philip on the other and the three engines talked well into the night telling stories and laughing together.
The next morning, Philip asked the Fat Controller about staying with Stafford and told him what Edward and BoCo had said. The two engines were sure the Fat Controller would agree, as indeed, he did.
Philip and Stafford now share the same shed. They are never lonely as there is always another engine to talk to and Philip works harder than ever before. There are some nights when he misses Edward, but he is very happy there is another engine to keep his friend company.
Philip is sometimes a little jealous of BoCo, but the big diesel understands. The two have now become friends and there is nothing either of them wouldn't do for their good friend, Edward the Blue Engine.
