Chapter 30
The breeze was calming as it caressed her hair, the salty water smell easing all her raging thoughts. She wished she could keep standing on this edge forever. She would love to sleep and wake up to the breath-taking view of the horizon.
Her blue eyes rivalled the waters surrounding the island, but they were soft enough to blend in with the sky. She was looking down from above, knowing that one step and she would fall over the edge but she didn't dare to move.
She looked down at the journal in her hands, her fingers trailing over the leather cover. It was a bit worn out and was a bit torn on the edges. It had been through a lot all those years that it waited for her to read it.
How many times had it fallen in the wrong hands since then? It was the last piece she had of her mother despite the dagger. It was the last letter her mother wrote, the memories of her life in the palm of her hands.
It was time.
Rosalie let out a breath and pulled out a silver lighter. She memorized everything that her mother wrote to her. She knew every detail, every teardrop, every emotion and every hardship of her mother. It was all being kept safe inside her heart.
My dearest Mother… This is your daughter, Rosalie…
Rosalie lit the lighter before she brought the journal towards the flame. She could feel her hands shaking yet resisted to pull away. The leather and pages lit aflame and the small flames slowly started to devour the book.
I've been doing alright. I've met some great people that I would love to introduce to you. They're a bit rough and dangerous, but I love them. I met this fiery redhead, Goggles, as I call him. He really pisses me off, but I feel safe with him.
Rosalie briefly closed her eyes and tried to push away the bubbling emotions. A single tear fell from her eyes and she scolded herself. She was a grown woman. There were no tears to be shed. She had to do this.
I'm glad I met them. Truth is, when I'm with them I feel complete if only for a moment but Law… My heart still aches back to him. I love him. Thinking of a life without him is too painful for me. I have to go and save him.
The flames died down and the last of the pages and leather cover merely glowed as it vanished piece by piece. The burnt pieces and ashes flew up into the sky. The gentle breeze guided the pieces towards the ocean and away from her.
Mother, please guide me until I reach my destination. Until then, let me be selfish and keep you with me a little longer. I promise to see you off when all is said and done. Thank you for everything. I couldn't have asked for a better life than the one you gave me.
Rosalie smiled as the last pieces vanished into the air and she brushed her hair behind her ear. She took in a deep breath and a dry laugh escaped her. How selfish she was indeed. Then again, her mother knew her better than anyone else.
I love you with all my heart
"Sweetheart! Oi!" Kid's voice rang in her ears and Rosalie glanced back at the two men approaching. She saw his displeased look and Killer's hidden expression. She merely smiled back at them and then walked towards them.
With love
Rosalie
"What the hell are you doing staring into space like that? Your little extras have been running around all day looking for you, saying that you weren't in your room." Kid crossed his arms over his arms over his chest while his brows twitched in agitation.
"You haven't been sleeping at all, have you?" Kid accused and Rosalie blinked a few times before chuckling. Kid's reddish orange eyes didn't show any form of amusement in them despite the warmth of her own blue eyes.
"Nope!" She stated, the males wanting to fall over from her honest response. "Sorry about that! I had some things that was on my mind. I'm alright now. Don't worry, I'll get my well-deserved beauty sleep in." She winked at Kid and he groaned loudly.
"Rosalie, you should really try to get in some rest. I can see that you're walking around exhausted and if we were to get in a fight again, you won't have enough energy," Killer worriedly stated and Rosalie's facial expression softened.
"You're right." The two males blinked in surprise. Rosalie smiled warmly at them, her cheeks tinting slightly. "Thank you, Killer, Goggles. I'll be sure to take better care of myself but there's something that I have to do before I can do that."
Kid's brows furrowed as his mind only gave him one answer to her silent statement. It angered him to no ends. She wasn't sleeping because she felt restless to go after Law. He knew that. He knew she had to leave and he despised the thought.
Killer sighed and rubbed the back of his head. "Already that time, huh? I can't believe that time flew by so fast," Killer sadly stated and a sad gleam passed through Rosalie's eyes. Kid, hating the sudden depressing atmosphere, scoffed.
"To hell with all this mope shit! That's all the more reason for you to get a decent amount of sleep! You're not leaving this island 'till I say so, Sweetheart!" Kid told her and before Rosalie could snap back at him, he had her slung over his shoulder.
"Kid! Let me down! Kid!"
"I refuse. I can't have you running off again. You're getting sleep," Kid retorted and Rosalie's eyes widened. Was he serious? Was he really going to carry her all the way back to bed? She looked at Killer who said nothing and watched the scene unfold.
Traitor.
"W-Wait a b-bit! It's not even night yet! How can I sleep now?! Besides, if you carry me in like this it'll leave a terrible impression on your men! Please let me down! Goggles!" She pleaded. Kid, however, didn't listen to a word she said.
"Not happening," Kid said and a small smile came onto his lips as he looked back at her. "A big brother has to look out for his stupid, emotional and hormonal little sister." His words had Killer briefly stopping while Rosalie growled at him.
"HUH?! I'll show you that this stupid, emotional and hormonal little sister will kick your big brother ass! Where did you come up with that anyway?! Do have some weird brother-sister complex?" Rosalie paled, her expression holding the terror of her thoughts.
"No!" Kid blushed deeply and cursed underneath his breath. "Shut up. You're just like a little sister. Constantly bickering with me and picking fights. Someone has to save your sorry ass!" He snapped and Rosalie gave him a smug smirk.
"Look at that, you actually have a heart."
"What the hell did you say?! Do you want me to kill you?!" He snarled back at her, Rosalie laughing loudly as she teased him. Killer watched the scene unfold and a hidden smile came onto his lips as he shook his head.
Rosalie didn't even care to be on Kid's shoulder anymore. They merely continued to bicker, not having a care in the world. It was as clear as day but he didn't dare to say a word. If only these times were different.
"Hey, Killer! What are you doing? Don't tell me the 'can't-do-anything-but-look-intelligent'-disease from Sweetheart infected you." Kid pulled a disgusted face and received an elbow pressing into his cheek as Rosalie growled at him.
"What did you say?! At least he doesn't have the 'I-want-to-kill-everyone-who-looks-at-me'-disease from you!" Rosalie scowled at him but Kid laughed, feeling prouder than insulted at her words and it only pissed her off more.
"Uh, Boss…" Wire trailed off as the trio came into view and the two redheads looked at the small group of men. Wire sweat dropped along with the two newbies, Heat stared with a bored expression and Virus smiled.
"Yo, Rose." She waved at him, the others looking at them in disbelief. How did they ignore the entire situation in front of them?! "Captain taking you to get some rest? Those bangs aren't looking too good," Virus silently scolded.
Rosalie groaned. "Not you too… Yes! I'm going to rest now. I don't have any other choice since this big oaf won't let me down. Please tell Poison he'll have to cope without me." Virus saluted and walked off without another word.
"Ca-Rosalie-san, are you sure you're alright?" Blake asked while sweat dropping with his partner next to him. Ryusei stared at them with a blank expression, not saying as much as his eyes did. Rosalie laughed lightly.
"Don't worry, I'm -Ugh!" Kid pushed her into a sudden uncomfortable position and she glared at his smug expression. "You can at least try to make this comfortable, Goggles!" She snapped at him and he rolled his eyes.
"We don't have time for chitchat. We're leaving." Kid walked off passed them, Rosalie cursing at him all the way. He let her words fall on deaf ears and ignored most of what she said. In the end Rosalie let out a defeated sigh.
She propped herself up by her elbows, her head resting on the palm of her hands. She glared at the back of Kid's head, hoping to make a hole as she continued but that too was in vain. It was no use. She was too tired to even try.
Blue eyes travelled down towards the grey floors beneath them and she felt a wave of nostalgia wash over her. She missed a pair of grey eyes but she knew before she could reach him, she had to find him and fulfil Corazon's wish.
She briefly wondered was she going to have another vision if she went to sleep. It happened each time she slept and despite not rejecting any of them, it kept her from her rest. She glanced back at Kid, something popping up in her head.
Could she control her premonition?
If she could, then she would have no problem sleeping and she would be able to see other people's futures on contact. Her Mother couldn't control it but she could state other people's futures on touch so maybe Rosalie could too.
"Don't even think about it." Kid's voice rang in her head and Rosalie froze in his grip. He glanced back at her, his reddish orange eyes showing his seriousness. "Did you forget I know all about what you can do? Don't you dare to try all that premonition shit with me," he warned in a low tone.
Rosalie was in shock. She didn't expect him to know what she was scheming to do nor did she expect him to bring up his knowledge. She had almost forgotten about it. Kid knew everything about her mother, the curse, the premonition.
"That's why you can't sleep, right? You're too damn busy having visions about some future that's not even set in stone," Kid stated and Rosalie's brows furrowed. She let out a sigh and stared at the grey tiling beneath her.
"Yes."
"I thought so." Kid kept his temper in check and his voice in a monotone. "I can see that you're becoming restless. When are you planning to go after that stupid Trafalgar?" He asked, not daring to look back at the female's facial expression.
"Tomorrow." Her words left a painful tug in his chest, followed by a hollow feeling. She was leaving tomorrow already? No, of course she was. How long did he expect she would stay there? The time finally came for her to venture on.
"Very well." Rosalie raised a sceptical eyebrow. "If you get enough rest in, I'll permit it. But, if not. That arrogant bastard can stay where he is and you're staying right here," Kid concluded and Rosalie groaned despite a small smile coming onto her lips.
"Fine," she grumbled underneath her breath and received a grunt from Kid. She couldn't help but smile wider. He really did care a lot. How did they become so close? At first, they wanted to kill each other on the first glance and now… Well, let's say that they were on equal terms.
"Goggles… I want you to promise me that I'm going to see you again. We may be enemies after I depart but I still don't want you to go and kill yourself. If you do then I won't be able to come and kick your-Ack!" Rosalie was roughly thrown on a bed and hit her head against the wooden frame.
She held her sore head while glaring at Kid through teary eyes. "What the hell was that for?! Do you want me to kill your ass before leaving?!" She snapped at him, her words shocking her as they left her mouth.
Oh no, she was becoming just like Kid.
Kid burst out laughing, his smirk widening. "Look at that. You're quite easy to influence, aren't you, Sweetheart? I'm so proud. You grew up so fast." He easily caught the pillow after his teasing statement and enjoyed the playful anger she aimed towards him.
"Well, what do you expect to happen after a month that I was stuck to look at your scowling face!" Rosalie pointed out and watched in amusement as his eyes twitched in agitation. She smirked feeling victorious until the pillow hit her face.
"Go to sleep. I don't have time to keep you away from your sleep," Kid said, a smirk on his lips and a warmth coming from his eyes. Rosalie gave him a blank look and saw him turn to walk away, the thought of her being alone suddenly left her cold.
"W-Wait!" She outstretched her hand, Kid stopping in his tracks to look back at her. Rosalie found her voice suddenly lost in her throat. Huh? Was I about to ask him to stay? What am I? I'm not some five-year-old child!
"A-ah… I…um…" She was in trouble! What was she going to say? Whatever it was, she had to think of it and very fast before she threw the only dignity she had, away. She watched as his impassive expression quickly changed into an amused one.
Without saying a word, he went to sit down next to her on the bed. She looked at him in confusion but still didn't want to ask or say anything. She could feel her cheeks burning brightly and averted her eyes away from him until she felt a hand on her head.
"That's enough overthinking everything for today. Go to sleep, Sweetheart. You're going to need all the rest you can get for tomorrow," Kid softly stated and Rosalie smiled. This was the second time he was this kind to her.
"Thank you, Kid. I guess the Big Bother does look out for his little sister." She winked at him, his eyes widening and a bright blush covering his cheeks. She giggled and lay her head down on the pillow, closing her eyes.
Just for today, she'll let herself be spoiled by behaving like a child. She knew that there was no time to have that but when Kid was there, she somehow always fell asleep without having any visions. For once, she wanted to sleep, really sleep until she was fully rested.
Kid ran a hand through his hair and ignored the smile on his lips. She was acting like a spoiled child and he didn't mind. He watched as her breathing quickly became even and deep, briefly surprised by how quick to had fallen asleep.
"Sweet dreams, Sweetheart."
