Chapter 3: Move In Day

Riley woke up with a spring in his step, a wide grin on his face as he thought about the day ahead. Today was a moving day for Cindy - and he got to be there to help her unpack and get settled into her new Chicago apartment. It felt like a special privilege, being invited into this new chapter of her life.

After a quick shower, Riley got dressed in comfortable clothes that allowed him to move freely: a white wife-beater and faded blue jean shorts that hugged his muscular thighs. He took extra time oiling his freshly done braids, wanting to look good for Cindy even if it was just for some casual labor work. With coffee and breakfast in hand from the corner shop, Riley hopped into his car and drove over to Cindy's place. As he turned onto her street, excitement buzzed through him. Her building wasn't far from where he lived now - another reminder of how fate had kept them connected despite their initial distance after high school.

Riley pulled up in front of Cindy's building and parked his car. He grabbed the coffee and breakfast bags, taking a moment to admire the structure before heading inside.

"Yooooo, let's get this shit started!" he called out playfully as he entered the lobby.

Cindy turned from where she was directing movers unloading boxes from a van. Her eyes widened slightly when she spotted Riley - not just because of his energetic greeting but also due to the way her gaze drifted over his casual yet attractive appearance.

"Morning, Mr. Famous," she replied with a smirk, walking towards him. "I see you're ready for some hard labor."

As they approached each other, Riley couldn't help but notice how Cindy looked today. She wore an extremely short pair of denim shorts that hugged her toned legs and showed off her sun-kissed thighs. A cropped white tank top rode high on her waist, emphasizing her athletic build and leaving little to the imagination.

Riley's mouth dropped open as he took in the sight of Cindy, his pulse quickening at the tantalizing display of her toned skin. He quickly recovered, flashing a charming smile.

"Hey now, watch it with those eyes," he teased playfully, holding up his coffee cups defensively. "I came to help you move stuff around, not have you undress me with your gaze.

Cindy laughed and shook her head, tossing her golden hair over one shoulder. She winked impishly before turning back to supervise the movers. As Riley followed behind her into the apartment complex's elevator, he couldn't shake off the image of Cindy in that revealing outfit. His mind wandered to thoughts of how she'd look without those shorts - or perhaps even less clothing altogether. Shaking his head to clear it, he focused on helping navigate their way through Cindy's new space.

As the elevator doors slid open, Riley stepped out into a spacious foyer that made his jaw drop. The apartment was massive - far larger than he'd expected for someone just starting out in their career as a college basketball coach. He couldn't help but wonder how Cindy had managed to afford such a huge place on her modest coaching salary alone.

"Wow, this shit is tight," Riley commented, trying to hide his surprise and curiosity about her housing situation. "You must have really lucked out with this lease."

Cindy flashed him a bright smile as she led the way inside, boxes and bags scattered across the sleek hardwood floors. "Yeah, it's definitely more space than I need... but the location is perfect for my job." Her tone was dismissive when he pressed for details about affordability. Riley shrugged it off, not wanting to pry further into something that clearly didn't interest Cindy right now.

As Cindy turned to grab a box, Riley's eyes were drawn to the intricate design on her back. The lioness was a stunning work of art, its black and white hues standing out against the paleness of her skin. The flowers surrounding it added an ethereal touch, making the piece truly unique. "Whoa, that's amazing," Riley breathed out in awe. "I've never seen anything like it. When did you get this done?" He moved closer to get a better look, admiring not just the artistic skill but also how beautifully it highlighted Cindy's curves.

Cindy glanced over her shoulder with a small smile at his interest. "Just got it last month actually. Been meaning to show it off more." She lifted the heavy box effortlessly and carried it towards their designated area for unpacking. "It took about six hours spread over three sessions - not fun but totally worth it now."

"You know, if you ever decide to get another piece done, I'd be happy to help out... in any way possible." Riley's voice took on a subtle huskiness at the end, hinting at more than just artistic assistance.

Cindy turned fully towards him, her eyes sparkling with excitement at the offer. "Really? You'd do that for me?" She stepped closer until they were inches apart, their bodies nearly touching. "That would mean so much coming from you."

Riley simply smiled as they dove into unpacking boxes and arranging furniture. Riley found himself helping Cindy lay out her clothes - shirts first, since she mentioned those were essential for work.As Riley carefully hung up Cindy's shirts, a blush crept onto his cheeks when he came across her lingerie drawer. He hadn't expected to be handling such intimate items, but he didn't want to make a fuss or seem uncool.

"Okay, so... these are your work outfits?" Riley asked lamely as he lifted out delicate bras and lace panties, trying not to stare at the revealing designs. "I can just set them aside here for now." He placed the hangers on top of the dresser with exaggerated care, hoping Cindy wouldn't notice his flushing face.

Cindy looked over at him curiously but didn't comment on his awkwardness. "Yeah, those are for actual practice and games," she explained matter-of-factly. "Wanna take a break soon? I think we've made good progress."

Riley nodded, relieved to have a legitimate excuse to step away from the lingerie drawer. "Yeah, we've definitely earned a break," he agreed, setting down the last hanger with a sigh of accomplishment. "How about I order some food for us? Pizza or something?"

Cindy smiled gratefully and rubbed her back where it had been bothering her from lifting heavy boxes all day. "Mmm, pizza sounds amazing right now. And maybe grab a couple of cold beers too?" She walked over to the window and gazed out at the city skyline as Riley pulled out his phone to place their food order.

"Thanks for all your help today, Riley. I really appreciate it," Cindy said sincerely after a moment of contemplative silence. "It's nice having you here... makes everything feel less overwhelming." Her voice carried an underlying warmth that made Riley's heart flutter in response.

Riley looked up from his phone as he placed the food order, a curious expression on his face. "Hey, Cindy? Can I ask you something?" He set his phone down and approached her at the window, leaning against the frame to mirror her stance.

"Sure thing," Cindy replied easily, though there was a slight wariness in her tone as she turned to face him fully.

"You know how we haven't really talked much since... well, since high school?" Riley's words trailed off as he searched for the right way to phrase it. He didn't want to bring up bad memories but couldn't ignore their complicated history. "I've always wondered... why did you cut off contact after leaving for college?"

Cindy's eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion before she quickly masked it with a neutral smile. "Oh, that was just me being a dumb fucking kid," she dismissed with a wave of her hand.

Riley's brow furrowed, unconvinced by Cindy's casual brush-off. "Really? Because it seemed like more than just being a dumb fucking kid," he countered gently but firmly, his eyes searching hers for honesty. "You were my best friend... and then suddenly you disappeared without a word. It hurt."

Cindy's expression faltered for a split second before she regained her composure, but not before Riley caught the flash of guilt in her eyes. "Riley, I..." She trailed off, seeming to struggle with what to say. Sensing he was getting close to the truth, Riley pushed forward cautiously. "Look, whatever happened... I want us to move past it now. We've got our lives back on track and we're friends again. So, let's be honest with each other." He held out his hand in a gesture of goodwill and understanding.

Cindy's gaze dropped to the floor as Riley's words hung in the air, her heart pounding against her ribs. She could feel the weight of his stare boring into her, demanding answers she wasn't sure she was ready to give. The truth lingered on the tip of her tongue, tempting and terrifying at once. "I... I was married," Cindy blurted out suddenly, the confession tumbling from her lips before she could stop it.
