Look, I didn't want to be a half-blood. I'd much rather be back in Atlantis with my family. But they decided that it would be best for a young godling such as myself to be introduced to mortal education. Well, that's only half the story, there's also the fact that if my Uncle knew I existed he would immediately strike me down with a lightning bolt. To make the disguise convincing my powers were greatly reduced to that of a demigod, and I was sent to live with a mortal woman called Sally Jackson, whom I have taken her name. Sally was a previous fling of my father the god Poseidon. And so while I missed my real mother, I had gradually learned to treat her as if she were an aunt of sorts. She never called me Perseus, instead choosing to call me Percy as a way of anglicising my name.
Sally sent me to a mortal school called Yancy Academy. It was a private school for mostly troubled kids, so naturally I fit right in. School was a chore. It wasn't that learning about how little mortals understood the world wasn't amusing, it was being in the same room of 2 dozen disturbed individuals. Somehow I had managed to stay under the radar for a number of years there and avoid some bullying, not learning much I hadn't already learned. Eventually what would be my last new school year started. There was now a Latin class which interested me, I was a native Ancient Greek speaker after all, so learning more ancient languages would be useful in the mythological world. That was when I would meet my first friend at school.
Grover was obviously a satyr, but I couldn't let him know that I knew that. He was scrawny and meek. When I had first learned of satyrs I was told they were violent rapists and hedonists, but Grover really destroyed that image forever. I had heard that the camp for demigods employed satyrs as "seekers", but I had not seen any demigods at Yancy...
...
Oh...
Grover had obviously caught my scent and, mistook it for a demigod's due to my under-powered state. He made the first move to initiate friendship, obviously to gain my trust, I went along with it as I grew fond of him.
Much of the first semester was spent trying to protect Grover from the various bullies, especially one mortal girl called Nancy Bobofit in particular. Grover used a fake cover story that he was crippled in order to hide the fact that he walked funny due to his hooves, this however only made him more of a target unfortunately. Eventually my Latin teacher randomly disappeared one day and was replaced by a centaur. This really confused me until I realised that the centaur looked really familiar.
It was Chiron, the brother of my mentors Aphros and Bythos, why he had come I did not know, but I suspect that Grover had informed him of something that made him decide to "home visit", that something likely being me. The first class I had with 'Mr. Brunner' as Chiron called himself was quite fun. He used a wheelchair to disguise his horse form and commonly brought out Roman weapons and armour to class. Unlike his brothers Chiron seemed to be a much better teacher, so I was jealous I didn't have him as a teacher when I was younger.
One day we had a school field trip to an art museum that displayed Greek and Roman art. Nancy was throwing wads of her sandwich at Grover's curly brown hair. She began to giggle but stopped once I stared at her, instantly she looked terrified and began to look afraid. I probably shouldn't have done that, as Grover definitely noticed my ability to use my aura to terrify her.
"It's okay Percy, I like peanut butter, just leave Nancy alone," Grover said trying to get me to stop scaring her with my presence.
"Fine."
'Mr Brunner' began leading the class through a tour of the various galleries of art and statues. It was interesting to say the least that they had survived for millennia. The field trip was also joined by a substitute math teacher named Mrs. Dodds. There was something incredibly off about her, and I could tell that Grover did not like her one bit. This probably meant she was a monster of some sort, so I always had my guard up around her.
Nancy was messing with Grover again while Chiron was teaching the class about a stele, at this point I'd had enough.
"Can you quit it?" I growled.
The class went quiet, but Chiron instead confronted me.
"Did you have something to say Mr. Jackson?"
"No, sir."
"Perhaps you'll tell us what this carving represents?"
This would be easy, I had already been educated in our history by Aphros. When I looked the carving I saw that it was of Kronos devouring my father and aunts and uncle.
"This is Kronos devouring his children."
"And why did he eat his children?"
"He was paranoid that they would overthrow him."
"Like we're going to use this in real life for anything, what a waste of time this trip is," Nancy mumbled to her friend.
"And to paraphrase Miss Bobofit's excellent question, why does this matter in real life?"
I gave it a little thought, but eventually I gave an answer.
"It teaches us to not be paranoid about change, Kronos was told his son would usurp him and by the actions of his paranoia it became reality once his wife and Zeus tricked him into vomiting up his children."
"Eww!" said one of the girls.
"Full credit Mr. Jackson, it seems that you actually do pay attention in class after all, and on that happy note, it's time for lunch. Mrs. Dodds, would you lead us back outside please?"
There was some snickering after Chiron finished but then they followed Mrs. Dodds outside. Grover and I were about to follow but Chiron asked me to stay. I gestured for Grover to continue on.
"You're doing quite well in my classes Mr. Jackson."
"Thank you, sir?"
"What you learn from me is vitally important, and I expect you to treat it as such. I will only accept the best from you Percy Jackson."
I tried to guess at what he was trying to say, he was talking to me about life as a demigod.
"I understand sir, I won't let you down."
'Mr Brunner' smiled at told me to go outside and eat lunch.
Outside the museum the other students were back to being troublesome while Mrs. Dodds didn't do anything about it. I walked up to Grover who was sitting by a fountain by himself.
"Detention?" Grover asked.
"No, Mr. Brunner just wanted to let me know that I need to take my studies more seriously."
"You're pretty smart Percy, I never see you study much yet you always do really well on tests."
I sighed and we sat together in silence for a little while before he asked for my apple. I gave it to him and decided to look up. The skies were becoming stormy and dark, the weather had been especially bad since Christmas, this made me look up towards the Empire State Building. Normally on clear days I was able to take a glance at Olympus, but since Christmas it had always been covered in thunderclouds. Something terrible must have happened and it still hasn't been resolved. Nancy appeared in front of us and dropped her half eaten lunch all over Grover's head.
"Oops!"
That was it, I had enough of this annoying girl, I used my powers to pull her into the fountain.
"Ahh! Percy pushed me in!" she screamed.
Mrs Dodds seemingly teleported right next to us.
"Jackson, come with me."
I followed her back into the museum. I remembered my suspicions that she could possibly be a monster and kept my guard up. She was standing in front of a frieze of the Greek Gods and was making a growling noise. My monster alarm was ringing extremely loudly at this point.
"You've been giving us problems, honey."
Instead of pretending to be the ignorant, sheltered demigod, I decided I could try to get some answers out of her.
"Who's us?"
She cackled. "Did you really think you could get away with it?"
I was very confused.
"Get away with what?"
"We are not fools, Percy Jackson," she said mockingly. "Confess to the theft and you will suffer less pain."
"I won't confess to something I didn't do. What did supposedly I steal?"
Mrs. Dodd's eyes widened and began to glow like barbecue coals, like she saw something in the distance.
"It doesn't matter, your time is up."
She transformed into her true, monstrous form. She was one of the furies. I stepped back as she began to pounce.
"What ho, Percy!" I heard a shout from behind. Chiron, holding a pen in his hand, tossed it towards me in the air. I grabbed the pen which transformed into the same bronze sword 'Mr Brunner' showed off to class, I could tell that it was made from Celestial Bronze and strangely had a connection to the sea in it. I didn't have much time to think more about it as I thrusted up, stabbing the fury in the chest. She immediately vaporised into a yellow mist as I slew her. I turned back to see Chiron about to snap his fingers, I realised he was going to try and manipulate the mist on me, that wouldn't work though as I am a god. When he noticed that I wasn't dazed he grew extremely worried.
"Percy... are you awake?"
I realised that I couldn't let him figure it out so I decided to play innocent.
"Yes... Mr Brunner, you saw that right?"
Chiron gave a deep sigh.
"When we get back to Yancy, come to my office. We need to talk about this."
I slowly nodded as he moved his wheelchair towards me.
"Are you alright?"
"Yeah..."
He patted my head and opened his right palm.
"Could I have my sword back."
I handed it back, it transformed back into a pen.
"Now, lets finish this trip. I think we've both had enough excitement for today haven't we?"
I followed him back outside as we concluded the field trip for today.
