Chapter Twenty 3
The Final Dream:
The 'child' spoke with the negative voice, as they came to an agreement to end the world once and for all, though they proved they were superior pointing out that they were in control for a while. They left the negative voice in the sweet silence of darkness as they headed out and finally left the underground to a world of ash and fire. They also saw a lady figure standing near the top as they walked next to her and looked out at the land that was still burning, along with the empty hole of the sun. The lady figure had more red strands in her hair and the bottom of her dress that faded into shadows gained colors of yellow, orange, blue, and cyan.
"... I must say, I'm impressed. You kept your end of the deal and more... good work," The lady figure, Corruption, said.
"I see you've had your work cut out for you too," The 'child,' Chara, responded.
"You made it easier."
"Ah, I see. That's why you needed support."
"I have big ambitions."
"Well, since you've completed your mission as I have with mine, what do you plan to do now?"
Chara asked as they turned towards her with interest in their bright burgundy eyes.
"You're free from them?" Corruption asked, referring to the voices that Chara seemed to heed, and recalling a faint memory of how they reacted in another time.
"Of course. Though they are quite persistent, but I can't be upset obviously. It was because of such determination that I am here today after all..."
"Hehehe. So the fun hasn't yet ended for you," Corruption grinned.
"Possibly. Though I don't mind this," Chara tilted their head up, basking in the darkness of the hollow sun.
"The silence isn't so bad. Especially when you've been in silence for so long."
"I understand completely… and apparently fighting amongst ourselves is quite meaningless too."
"True. We conquered without getting in each other's way and gained what we wanted in exchange of power. Quite a partner you've grown to be. I'm quite glad for it," Corruption's eyes closed.
"Such praise coming from you," Chara said as their grin widened in amusement.
"Shouldn't an acceptable action have an acceptable reaction? Indeed so. Couldn't have done it all without you being so bold, as without them for giving you the ability to usurp control," Corruption opened her eyes as she peered over to Chara with a widening of her grin.
"I do agree. Now I see why this was all necessary," Chara said as they looked towards her and then back at the world as most of the fire melted into ash.
Tap. Tap. Tap. Tap.
"... Do you hear something?" Corruption asked as she picked up on the approaching slow paced steps.
Tap tap tap tap.
"Is someone… alive?" Chara wondered as they turned towards where they emerged since the sound was echoing from there.
"..." Corruption sensed a determination that was too strong and familiar as her eyes widened.
"I missed one? But that can't be possible, I reached the highest Lev-" Chara was cut off by Corruption, who moved in front of them while pushing them back a bit.
"Chara… get back."
"Huh? Why is th-" Chara stopped speaking as Curtain walked out and looked over the edge of the cliff to see the ruins of the world.
"... who is this?" Chara asked in a whisper.
A moment of silence passed, and suddenly Curtain looked towards Chara as she saw right through them. A shiver of nostalgia ran through their mind, as Chara remembered a certain mother who did the same, but then felt a weight of hostility piercing them from the daggers that awaited behind the calm emptiness of Curtain's eyes.
"Don't get close. I can see... she can actually harm you," Corruption warned as her eyes glowed a more brighter red with a scowl.
"… How? Shouldn't we be beyond that at this point?" Chara asked, though feeling her sins once again crawling on her back.
"She's not normal. She's like us but…" Corruption looked carefully at Curtain and noticed that her eyes were growing in intensity of purple and white.
"…" Chara had no other words to say except an astonished expression as they noticed the glow and could now see a glimpse of pure power and rage within Curtain's eyes.
"... So, it was you two. This is what happens, huh? When you wait too long... I just wanted to believe in him... but don't worry. I'll be quick... you dirty murderers," Curtain said as she summoned a blue spear in one hand and a blue bone in the other, as flames encased the two weapons in spirals.
"Get out or she'll destroy you! We can't afford your LOVE to be wasted!" Corruption commanded as she brought forth red claws that tore through her hands as grey blood matter dripped off of them.
"I can still fight! Don't act as though I need your protection!" Chara insisted.
"… Then prove you can, or flee to the voice if you can't," Corruption said, and Chara brought out two large knives as their eyes glowed red and walked in front of Corruption.
"Two to one, though, not really now that I think about it," Curtain said nonchalantly as one of her eyes glowed blue and a large skull appeared above her with a charging shot.
"What are you? What is this… power?" Chara asked as their eyes widened upon seeing the former weapons that they had challenged now in a new level of strength.
"... Power, huh? I guess pain is power," Curtain replied as she shot at the two before her.
:Dream end
He slowly opened his eyes, and shook off the dizziness as he saw a skeleton carrying him in his arms.
"Oh! Hello! You're finally awake, little one! I was hoping you would be! You remind me of a flower friend of mine. You look like him but… seeing as you are half and half it's quite interesting," the other Papyrus said to the little goat monster he held.
"Wh… What?!" the little goat monster, Asriel, yelped as he looked himself over and saw his right paw hand was green with leaves growing from it while the other was normal.
Asriel turned towards other Papyrus and looked in his shining armor to see his face and saw that both his ears were green at the tips with a small thorn that acted as a horn on the left side of his head, and his pupil was green with darkness in the white area of his left eye. His fur had soft yellow bits more concentrated to the left side that were actually little petals, and he saw that he still had his green and yellow striped shirt and his pants, but he noticed rips in the right arm of his shirt as if someone with sharp claws grabbed him. The chest area of his shirt was torn a bit and revealed an incision that was red but also glowing in green, as the green was trying to heal away the injury.
"H-How? I'm only half formed… but why wasn't I fully changed into a flower…?" Asriel questioned out loud in surprise, and then his eyes widened in fear as he started to remember what had happened prior.
"There there, my friend! Remain calm! You're injured, so let's first tidy up that wound and then we can talk and find out what's going on! That Corruption demon brought us to this strange place as memory serves me, and I've been separated from my family and friends! Hopefully, we can find a solution to all of this!" other Papyrus said as he kept on walking ahead to a cave he found.
"…O-Okay, Papyrus," Asriel agreed, as he settled down and let other Papyrus carry him.
Frisk and oFrisk:
"… Corruption acted funny when she grabbed us. Like, she grabbed us and looked towards both of us as if someone was talking to her, and then she smiled at Curtain and said she wished she could have challenged her but she had a goal to complete. That's when she… that's when she stabbed her with her iron tail… I screamed and tried to fight but Corruption's grip was too strong. She told Curtain goodbye and to say hi to Sans before she took me away to a rooftop… I don't know how she knew Sans was coming when I didn't even know, but I couldn't do anything… She became a mist, and then I felt my soul grabbed with such a strength that I couldn't even move. I could see what was happening but I wasn't doing it. She... controlled me. She killed… I killed so many and even hurt my friends and Curtain's friends too… I'm just terrible!" other Frisk cried out as she buried her face in her hands.
"You were being forced to do those things. Corruption was doing it, not you," Frisk said as she petted her head.
"But she used my powers for it… it still makes me feel so bad that I couldn't stop her… not even to save the reset button when she broke it," other Frisk said as she looked towards her with watery eyes.
"… There there, me. You know you never would have done those things, and you've been suffering just like everyone else has in your world. I know that when Curtain saved us by pushing Corruption away before she exploded I… I don't know what I would have done if Curtain died," Frisk said as she wiped a lone tear from her eye.
"I don't even know how I'm still alive… maybe… I just hoped that one day, something would happen to change everything. A chance. I hoped and kept hoping even as she left me alone for me to drown in regret… I tried to stay determined that the nightmare will end and she will be stopped… I did consider maybe dying would prevent her from using my power to hurt everyone too," other Frisk said.
"… But then how could you fix anything if you died? Even if Corruption no longer had your body, she might use someone else," Frisk said.
"… yeah. She said that actually. That if I died and someone else gained the reset a part of her would be with them too," other Frisk said.
"Huh, I wonder how that would work since it's broken, unless just because it's damaged doesn't mean it's destroyed…? I don't mean to ask too many questions but… what was it like to be possessed? Besides not having will, was it painful too?" Frisk asked.
"It's okay, don't worry, I'd rather talk about it. I haven't had anyone to talk to for so long… So Corruption possessing me was very painful. It was like my soul was shattering but never like fully shattering… like I was in between life and death and I was just stuck there. Like if time stopped and wouldn't move forward but the pain was just lingering. That's how it felt every single time," other Frisk said.
"Between life and death..." Frisk reminiscent about Corruption mentioning how with LOVE she would always come back.
"… what do you think about that?" other Frisk asked.
"I think maybe… Corruption is like that. She dies but comes back with LOVE while we have determination. And we use save points as the point in time for us to return while she seems to just return where she was defeated or something like that. She just doesn't have the save point like us that effects the whole world and time too… It's like her save point is herself and only effects herself," Frisk inferred.
"That makes sense now thinking about it, and the fact that she knew us and seemed to have sent us as a 'Chara' underground to kill, but we didn't… then she's been around for a very long time. But then the question is… who is Corruption? Was she always... corrupted?" other Frisk wondered.
"I wish I knew. Then maybe we would know how to stop her or reason or challenge her in the right way, but it's not like she would just say it. Even if she monologues she doesn't give enough information about herself… We need some way to find out but the only way is if we go back to before Chara… But I don't see how we can," Frisk said.
"We haven't traveled beyond our save points, and to travel that far back would be around the war or before… The war. Could she have been in the war? Or come from it?" other Frisk said.
"Or come from before it? Or cause it?" Frisk wondered.
"The problem is we can't go back that far since we weren't there, and to even go back that far… we can't risk the world being messed up worse if we did… if only we could just see what hap-" other Frisk said, as she gripped her chest from a shot of pain.
"A-Are you okay me?" Frisk asked in concern.
"I'm still recovering. My soul is just hurting as I heal," other Frisk said.
"Sorry about that. Healing the broken pieces may hurt as when you put ointment on a wound sometimes. I'll try my best to restore all I can with the least pain, my friend," other Curtain said as she appeared and seemed to come from the other Frisk's soul.
Frisk's jaw dropped realizing that ghost Curtain was there the whole time with other Frisk's soul.
"A-Are you…?"
"Ah, hello there Frisk. I've been sort of possessing my Frisk's soul in order to restore it. That's why I haven't really shown myself to you except now. Takes a bit of concentration since I'm still a new ghost and all," other Curtain said with a smile.
"You… still smile the same," other Frisk said.
"Of course, it's still me," other Curtain said as she looked towards her.
They heard sniffling as they turned and saw tears streaming down Frisk's cheeks.
"Hey, me, why are… oh, it must be from seeing Curtain in this state," other Frisk concluded.
"I'm sorry, this must be too much to se-" other Curtain stopped speaking when Frisk spoke,
"Your eyes, both of you. You two have been suffering for so long. I can see it. So much loneliness and pain… how can you bear it…?"
Suddenly tears began to pour from other Frisk and other Curtain's eyes as they realized they didn't need to hide their pain anymore since they were in a safer place. The two began to cry more as they hugged each other and cried.
"It was horrible, so horrible and scary," Other Frisk.
"I never felt so lonely and so cold…" Other Curtain.
"I wanted to run back to you. I wanted to run back to you again, but she never let me… I wanted to run and tell you… I'm sorry! I couldn't save you!" Other Frisk.
"Why are you even apologizing for that? It's not your fault… I should have been stronger… then maybe I could have saved you. I should be the one who's sorry for not being strong enough," Other Curtain.
"No! It's not your fault…" Other Frisk.
"But know that I'm still so sorry that I couldn't save you when you needed me!" Other Curtain.
"I am too! I'm s-sorry!" Other Frisk.
Frisk's eyes were streaming more tears as they cried out, and she approached both of them and wrapped her arms around them as she comforted them,
"There there… you're together again, right? You're back together again so… everything will be okay. You'll be okay… we all will be. We were given another chance, right? It'll be okay."
She stood with them as they continued crying for a while, and eventually they calmed down. Then Frisk looked up as her eyes widened to see someone standing a few feet away who wasn't there a moment ago. Her body froze in place as she stared into purple eyes that seemed to have a cold tenderness in them, as she noticed the colorful jean jacket she wore, but the radiating aura was anything but colorful.
"You… are Curtain too?" Frisk asked, as the other Frisk and other Curtain turned to see who she was looking at in shock.
"And you must be a different child then. Interesting. I can see you are different, and I'm glad for it. Though seeing a me who is a ghost is bothersome... Corruption must be involved then… well, then I'll have to hunt that one down too," Genocide-Survivor Curtain said in a more monotone voice.
"Your… clothes," other Curtain remarked.
"… Yes. I took a part of each monster killed by the demon child in my world," GenCurtain said as the girls stiffened.
"... Demon child?" Frisk asked.
"… Quite so. If you want to know more, we can talk it over. If you don't, it's fine. Just know, that if I see Corruption or that demon brat… I'm going to do all I can to kill them," GenCurtain said, as she turned and walked along.
The three looked towards one another, and after a swift nod and other Curtain returning to other Frisk's soul to repair it, the two Frisks ran ahead to follow GenCurtain, though cautiously.
Sans and Sans:
"huh… didn't think something like this would be here," other Sans said as they both stood before an old chapel that seemed abandoned from the vines and plants growing on and through it's cracks.
"weird… if corruption made this place, why have this? seems a bit… out of place since everywhere else has weird colors everywhere," Sans said as he started walking towards it while other Sans followed.
"well hopefully it's not booby trapped or anything," other Sans said.
They entered the chapel as they froze momentarily when they recognized the pillars, windows, and walls that were rusted gold and the floor that was checkered, though it had a brown carpet that lead ahead to the cracked white alter. Slowly they walked along and noticed the tipped over seats with overgrown plants on them and mushrooms, while also seeing a few cracks in the windows.
"… this place seems pretty significant huh?" other Sans noted.
"… 'Foolish bane of remembrance of long times past'…" Sans recalled.
"hm? what are you saying there?" other Sans asked.
"it's something corruption told me when we fought with her in new home. she said that to me… now that I think about it, and after seeing this… this place must have memories she isn't fond of… and if it's of long times past… this must be a very long time ago, maybe when it was built," Sans said.
"… a chapel like this could really only be built on the surface, and from how old it is… then she must have been around a long time even before monsters were underground…" other Sans said.
"strange huh? how could she have lived for so long? well maybe that's not the right question, considering she can die and come back… hmm, if this place is part of her memory… then this whole place is connected to corruption," Sans inferred.
"she did make it after all. but that does bring the question as to why something she doesn't like is here," other Sans said.
"… unless, this past… isn't like the other ones," Sans thought out loud.
"you think maybe… this is someone else's memory?" other Sans asked.
"seems so, considering it's much different. this place isn't as lively and off colored, kind of like how corruption is… this place feels different in it's own way," Sans replied.
"hmm… taking that into consideration… if this whole odd world is connected to corruption and this chapel is connected to someone else but is still here… a place that she doesn't like to remember… then could this place actually be the remnants of herself?" other Sans hypothesized.
"like an old self, considering it's overgrown too... and corruption was the one who called herself 'corruption,'" Sans said.
"… you know, i really dislike her. like, with all my might I do… sigh... but considering this place… could it be that she isn't really what we think?" other Sans asked.
"you mean that the old self may very well be inside, while the corrupted one is outside?" Sans asked.
"… Kind of like how she possessed my Frisk," other Sans said as he rubbed his skull in irritation.
"… let's see if we can find everyone else. you came here with Curtain, Frisk, Papyrus, and Marisol right? i can only assume if i'm here, then my own troop is here too. let's find them. especially your kid. they might need the extra support," Sans said, and other Sans nodded as they reached the front of the chapel.
Upon the ground was a stain of ash in a spiral on the ground. The swirling form it took reminded the two skeletons of a certain sinister glare Corruption would give them.
"… let's hurry."
"… right."
The two skeletons disappeared from the chapel in haste.
Papyrus, Papyrus, Curtain, and Asriel
"Oh my gosh! Who would have thought I'd meet another me like this! And in such cool armor too!" Papyrus complmented himself as they stood in front of a cavern while Curtain was healing Asriel's wound.
"Wowie! I can't believe it, but I can too! I have almost forgotten how cool I looked with my old uniform! I had to update it to make it flame resistant, but I do sometimes miss the old getup!" other Papyrus said.
"Heh heh. They seem to be getting along very well," Asriel said to Curtain as the two skeletons continued talking.
"Yep. Papyrus is a nice guy so I'm sure meeting himself would turn out fine. Makes me wonder if I met a me what she would be like… though from what the other Papyrus told us, I seem to be a ghost," Curtain said.
"… I must be too since I haven't seem myself here at all. Well, actually I might be gone gone," Asriel said as Curtain finished treating his wound.
"Maybe. Though it's nice to finally meet you, Asriel," Curtain said, as his eyes widened towards her.
"… ah. Did Frisk tell you about me?" Asriel asked.
"Yes. Though she wanted to follow your wish to not remember you, but… it was pretty hard for her. Especially after that dream she had of you saying sorry to her. We were actually planning to go underground to see if you were okay, but then we woke up here," Curtain said.
"So she actually heard me… Ha. Ha… it's all my fault!" Asriel said as he buried his face in his hands.
"What do you mean Asriel? What is?" Curtain asked, as the two Papyrus' attention was grabbed by the goat child.
"It's my fault… sniff… She came to me. Corruption. She came and was all broken and bruised and messed up. She was almost ranting to me about losing to you and Frisk and was upset, but then she said she wasn't because you gave her a challenge too. I told her to leave and that she was defeated so that she would leave you guys alone, but then she stared at me and said it was my fault that Chara never hurt anyone and that it was my fault for Frisk too…" Asriel said as he cried while Curtain listened patiently while the two skeletons were surprised.
"She then looked at me crazy and said I had to pay her for all of this and… and then she attacked me. I didn't even realize how strong she still was even though she was so hurt... She took what power I had remaining from my body from having all of the souls and… and I started changing back into a flower when she opened a portal or something and… I saw Frisk and you talking at New Home in it… She… oh that terrible smile! She looked at me and then jumped in and I… I couldn't do anything… I couldn't stop her… I couldn't save my friend!" Asriel cried.
"…" Curtain pulled him close as she hugged him while he sobbed.
"There there, Asriel. There there. Let it all out. You shouldn't blame yourself this way. It was her. Just because she is evil and twisted and did something that crazy, doesn't put you to blame for it as if you did it… this time. Your tears, your pain, your anguish… you've suffered and are suffering enough…" Curtain said, as she pulled back from him when he started to relax and then she stood up.
"Don't worry, Asriel. It's her turn to pay now," Curtain said with a confident smile to reassure him.
The crying flower goat child sniffled a bit more as he started rubbing his eyes from his tears, while Papyrus gave him a tissue he carried from being so prepared.
"Indeed! Fret not, little friend! The corrupted fiend will not get away with this! She must have traveled in time itself to create my more chaotic timeline... but fear not! Nor cry not! For the only tears that will fall shall be her own... of her undoing!" other Papyrus proclaimed as rays from the sun shined on his armor for a much more glorious magnetism of his awesomeness.
"That is right! We shall undue the wrongs she has committed to us all and triumph as we have before!" Papyrus said in addition, as Asriel smiled at both of them.
"Yeah. Let's go and find the others so we can settle this once and for all," Curtain said as she started walking ahead.
Papyrus carried Asriel as he followed behind Curtain while other Papyrus followed behind them all.
Marisol and Marisol
"Sniffle. That's so sad, me!" Marisol teared up as she hugged her other self.
"Aw, there's no need to hug me, though I do appreciate it. I've been so sad for so long. Though at least seeing the monsters and humans come together and knowing how much Curtain meant to them, especially Sans, and with Papyrus being by my side too… it helped me keep going onward," other Marisol said as she patted her while Marisol let her go.
"That's good. Heh. Pap is really something, isn't he? No matter what time, he is always wonderful… we need to find them. We need to protect everyone we can so this never happens again. No one has to die. We can do it," Marisol said as she offered her hand and the other Marisol took it in a strong grip.
"We need to find the others, and challenge Corruption once and for all. With the power passed on to us… we need to do all we can to fix this," other Marisol said.
"Yes, you're right. They let us keep a part of their determination, so let's make good use of it now," Marisol said.
"Did you tell Papyrus yet? Or the other monsters about that?" other Marisol asked.
"I told Papyrus first and frankly, I was surprised he wasn't upset or anything but more fascinated. And even the other monsters were too. It was funny when Undyne wanted to challenge me as a former royal guard leader to a mage's descendant… do you hear something?" Marisol said as they turned and saw Sans appear from behind a tree.
"oh hey. look who i found. hey Mari and Sol. seems like you two are doing alright," Sans said with a smile.
"Sans! It's so nice to see you! Is Curtain with you? Or Papyrus? Or Frisk?" Marisol asked.
"nah, just me. but we're looking for them," other Sans said as he appeared.
Mariosl stared at the purple scarf he wore and her eyes watered.
"Why does seeing it… even though other me told me already… why does it still hurt my heart?" Marisol said, her hands clamped together on her chest as if surppressing the pain.
"Because it shouldn't have happened," other Marisol said in a lower tone.
"don't worry. we'll fix this together. let's go," other Sans said, and the girls nodded.
"… hmm," Sans said as he thought to himself.
"What is it, Sans?" other Marisol asked.
"i was thinking why corruption specifically brought us here. i understand Frisk, Curtain, Pap, and myself as revenge… but you, Marisol, i wasn't sure… even though in their world you fought, I still think it's weird," Sans replied.
"It is… unless Corruption knows where I am descended from and just brought me along for the ride," Marisol said.
"… she's meticulous. she brought you here for a reason," other Sans said.
"Then it must be because of who our ancestor is. Before our battle at the castle, she had discovered I was a descendant and that's why she left in a haste after that… she said she had to think more and that's why we decided to hurry and attack her at the castle as a surprise, but apparently she planned for it…" other Marisol said.
"… taking that into consideration… and that corruption was there probably before the war… that place may have as much significance as we thought, other me," Sans said.
"… yeah." other Sans said as he thought about it.
"Huh?" Both Marisol's reacted at the same time.
"we'll explain on the way, let's go find the others," other Sans said, as they started walking along and telling the girls about what they found.
Hopefully this wasn't too much going on in one chapter.
