From The Book of Eternity, Chapter 5, Verses 1-4:
There are places that exist at the edges of the world, where the physical plane bleeds into the Divine, creating realms of profound significance.
Among these is the Crossroads, a confluence of Time, Fate, and Magic—a threshold where choices are made, and destinies intertwine, shaping the fabric of existence.
When one finds themselves in this nexus, they are always presented with a guide, a beacon amidst the chaos, to help illuminate the path forward.
The choices offered here resonate through eternity, echoing in the hearts of those who dare to tread in the realm between realms.
Annotation by Astra:
The Edges are places of wonder but also great peril. In the realms where the Divine overlaps with our own, truths are concealed beneath layers of mystery. What you see is rarely as it appears, and the intentions of the powers that dwell here can be enigmatic and unpredictable. One must never scorn nor seek to exploit the powers of the Divine; instead, when encountering them, always remember to stay true to oneself. The essence of your character will guide you through the shadows, revealing the light even amidst the darkest circumstances.
Frozen to the spot, overwhelmed by shock and emotion, Iris whispered, "Mom?"
A rush of emotions cascaded through her—hope, confusion, desire, and fear—clashing within her heart. "Mom, is that really you?" she asked, her voice trembling as hope warred with uncertainty. She didn't know if she wanted to hear a yes or a no, revealing the turmoil within her.
"Yes... and no," Astra replied, her tone both soothing and complicated.
Iris's heart sank at the ambiguity, disappointment swirling within her. "What do you mean by that?"
Astra sagged back slightly, appearing even more tired than before. "I know it's frustrating and hard for you. Trust me, I wish I could be here fully. But the price to set up even this much for you was incredibly high."
"What do you mean by price?" Iris asked, a frown creasing her brow as confusion washed over her.
In response, Astra reached up and pulled open a part of her robes, revealing a glowing tattoo that matched the infinity knot Iris wore over her heart. The sight sent a shiver down Iris's spine.
A sudden realization struck her, and memories of Aunt Petunia's words about the significance of the tattoo flooded back. This was a connection, a sacrifice, and a bond. It symbolized Astra's commitment to protect her.
"Is that...?" Iris began, her voice almost a whisper, the pieces coming together in her mind.
"Yes," Astra confirmed with a gentle nod. "This tattoo represents the price I paid. Each strand of magic woven into it is a part of me—my essence, my energy. I made a choice to ensure you could be safe, but it came with a cost that keeps me bound in this form. It's a piece of our connection, but it also means I cannot fully be with you, not yet."
Iris felt a mix of sadness and awe, her heart aching for both Astra's sacrifices and the profound bond they shared. "I just want to know you," she said softly, tears welling in her eyes.
Astra smiled gently, but there was a weight to her expression. "The choice isn't entirely mine to make, my love. The power may yet lie in your hands."
Iris frowned, uncertainty swirling within her. "What do you mean?"
Astra gestured with a sweeping motion to their surroundings, drawing Iris's attention to the ethereal landscape of the Crossroads. "We stand here, at the Crossroads, a nexus of possibilities. Choices are always made in this place, and the decisions made here hold more power than most."
Feeling a spark of intrigue, Iris looked around, the swirling fog and shimmering paths surrounding her. "So, the choices I make here... they really matter?"
"Yes," Astra confirmed, her gaze steady and earnest. "Every choice you make can ripple through time and alter the course of your life. This is a place where destiny intertwines with free will. Embrace this moment, for the path you choose will shape not just your future but the legacy of our family."
Iris felt a surge of determination coursing through her. The significance of her choices weighed heavily, but the knowledge that she had agency in her own life inspired her. "I will make the right choices," she vowed, her resolve solidifying.
Astra smiled sadly in response, her expression a mixture of pride and sorrow. "One of the most difficult parts of the Crossroads is that there are no right or wrong answers," she began, her voice gentle yet firm. "Every path you could take will both reward you and cost you something."
Iris furrowed her brow, contemplating Astra's words. "What do you mean by that? How can a choice be both good and bad?"
"Every decision shapes your journey," Astra explained, her gaze sweeping the swirling paths that branched out before them. "Following one road might lead to powerful knowledge, but it could also come with sacrifice—perhaps it will take time away from something or someone else you hold dear. Another path may offer comfort and safety, yet it might stifle your growth or creativity. The challenge lies in understanding what you value most and recognizing the cost of each choice."
Iris felt the weight of her mother's words settle in her heart, both daunting and liberating. "So, it's about figuring out what matters to me? What I'm willing to give up?"
"Exactly," Astra nodded, her expression softening. "This place will guide you, but ultimately, it is your heart and your intentions that will direct your steps. Trust yourself, Iris. You have the wisdom of both women—your mother and me—within you. Let that guide your choices."
Iris took a deep breath, the enormity of the moment sinking in. She felt a mix of trepidation and excitement; she was on the cusp of discovering her own path. "I will do my best to follow what feels right," she promised, her voice steady.
Astra's eyes glimmered with pride and affection. "That's all I can ask. Your journey is just beginning, and I will always be with you, in spirit, guiding you from afar."
Astra smiled gently, her expression thoughtful as she prepared to introduce the first path. "I want to share with you one of the choices that lies ahead," she began, her voice soft and introspective. "It is rooted in my earliest memories and the legacy of my family."
Iris listened intently, eager to absorb every detail. "I was born as the heiress to a very powerful and mysterious family. We often stayed away from the public eye, but members of our family would occasionally become known throughout the world for various reasons."
A look of nostalgia crossed Astra's features. "Each family member was born with a natural affinity for a specific type of magic. My father, for example, had an affinity for fire. The impossible feats he could accomplish with it left many in awe, while others viewed him with envy and fear."
Iris leaned closer, captivated by the stories. "What was your affinity?" she asked, her curiosity piqued.
Astra hesitated, a shadow passing over her face. "I can't tell you that right now," she said, her tone serious but gentle. "However, I can share that when it came time for me to awaken my own affinity, many in the family viewed it as weak. This perception led to infighting, and ultimately, our family destroyed itself from within. I barely managed to escape with my life."
Iris felt a pang of empathy for her mother's struggles. "That sounds terrible! But how did you—"
"While they believed my affinity was weak, the way I used it allowed me to become the strongest person our family had ever known." Astra's gaze softened, filled with pride. "Strength comes not just from power, but from how we wield it and the choices we make."
Iris felt a swell of admiration for Astra, but confusion flickered in her mind. "What does this have to do with my first choice?"
Astra's expression grew serious again. "Should you take the first path, you will gain the ritual to awaken your own affinity, along with the status of heiress for my family. It is a pivotal moment, one that will require courage and conviction."
Iris blinked, her pulse quickening. The idea of awakening her own magic, of stepping into a legacy that connected her to both Astra and Lily, ignited a fire within her. "I want to take that path!" she declared, determination resounding in her voice.
But Astra gently held up a hand, stopping her. "Not so fast, my dear. This is just the first path you have to choose from. I understand how tempting it is to chase a part of your family's legacy that has been mostly lost, but the other choices you will be presented with may hold equal or even greater importance."
Iris furrowed her brow, feeling the weight of Astra's words. "So, I need to consider all of them?"
"Exactly," Astra affirmed, her expression steady. "Each path will offer different lessons, insights, and strengths. While awakening your affinity is vital, it's equally important to consider how the other choices may shape your journey and your understanding of magic—all part of guiding you toward your true self."
Iris nodded slowly, taking in the gravity of Astra's advice. The significance of her decision loomed before her, but now it felt less like a burden and more like an opportunity for growth.
"Now," Astra said, her eyes sparkling with encouragement, "let us explore the other paths together."
With a burst of determination, Iris turned her back on the first path, where a glowing ritual circle had solidified at its end. She faced Astra, her curiosity ignited.
"The second path is also rooted in my history," Astra began, her voice calm yet filled with a sense of purpose. "It follows my journey as a priestess in the Order of Mystics. When I was younger than you are now, I devoted myself to the life of an initiate priestess."
Iris listened intently, her mind racing with questions. Astra's eyes took on a distant look, as if recalling her own youthful aspirations. "I held on to the role of an initiate throughout my school years. But, at the end of my sixth year, I was presented with the opportunity to face trials set by three different members of the Court."
"What happened?" Iris asked, eager for the details of her mother's past.
Astra's expression grew reflective. "I remember my trial clearly. It occurred later that same day, and I managed to pass the one set by Lady Magic, which allowed me to become an Apprentice in the Order of Mystics. However, it also meant I had to leave school and miss my final year."
Iris felt a pang of empathy. "So, you had to give up school for that?"
"Indeed," Astra nodded, her expression bittersweet. "While my duties in the Order took me to many incredible places, where I learned and experienced profound truths, I also lost much—time with friends, the joys of simple school life, and the chance to explore who I might have been had I followed a different path."
Turning to the second path, Astra continued, "This path would allow you to follow in my footsteps as a priestess. You would have the chance to explore the depths of magic and make an impact on the world, just as I did."
"Can I really do that?" Iris responded, a mixture of excitement and apprehension lacing her tone.
Astra smiled, her eyes glimmering with warmth. "Yes, my dear. The path of a priestess is one of service, growth, and profound understanding. It requires commitment but offers immense rewards. A chance to be part of something greater than yourself."
Iris felt the weight of Astra's words, realizing the importance of the decision before her. The second path flickered brightly, shimmering with promise.
As Iris stood at the crossroads, the weight of the choices before her began to settle in. Both of the paths offered so far were incredibly tempting for different reasons. The first promised a connection to her family history and the awakening of her magical affinity, while the second offered the opportunity to become a priestess—an important role filled with purpose and exploration.
Yet, the realization of how significant these choices were started to press heavily on her heart. If the choice was already this hard, what could the other paths offer? She took a deep breath, the swirling mists around her seeming to echo her internal turmoil.
Astra noticed her hesitation and spoke gently. "Yes, I understand that the weight of the choices made in a place like this can be daunting. Are you ready to learn about the third path?"
With a nod, Iris met Astra's gaze, eager yet apprehensive.
"The third path is the Path of Knowledge," Astra began, her voice filled with warmth. "Throughout my life, learning was always a central focus. I was perpetually curious, asking questions like what, why, and how. I adored researching magic—how it worked, why it functioned in certain ways, and if what others had discovered was truly accurate."
Iris listened intently, captivated by Astra's passion for knowledge.
Astra continued, "By the time I reached my fourth year, I had delved deeply into the mysteries of magic and even earned my first Chain of Silence."
"What's that?" Iris asked, intrigued.
Astra pulled up her sleeve, revealing what appeared to be a delicate tattoo—a chain winding its way around her wrist. The details were stunning; the finer designs on the chain shimmered and shifted, reminiscent of the mystical archway Iris had encountered in the Sanctum.
"It symbolizes the truths I discovered," Astra explained. "When you uncover certain secrets about the world or magic, the very power of the universe brands you to keep that knowledge safe. Some truths must be learned through experience, not simply handed over."
Iris's eyes widened with wonder. "That's amazing! But how does that relate to the Path of Knowledge?"
Astra smiled. "I poured all my research on spells, rituals, philosophy, and theory into creating a sort of guide—a magical book that offers knowledge, but not freely. It will often require the reader to answer questions or perform tasks, and the results dictate what it shows next or whether they can proceed further."
Iris felt the excitement bubbling up inside her. "If I take the third path, will that book be mine?"
"Yes," Astra confirmed, her gaze steady. "Along with one other, you will have access to knowledge that many can only dream of. But remember, this path comes with its own challenges and responsibilities."
As Iris absorbed this information, the weight of her decision loomed larger than ever. Each path held promise, but also potential sacrifices. Closing her eyes for a moment, she thought about what she truly wanted and what each choice would mean for her journey ahead.
"I want to know about the final path," Iris said, her voice steady yet filled with curiosity.
Astra's expression shifted, becoming both thoughtful and serious. "The final path is the most straightforward but also one of the hardest choices you will face. It is the path back the way you came."
Confusion creased Iris's brow. "Back? What do you mean?"
Astra continued, her tone gentle. "If you choose this path, you would leave this place as you entered it. It means relinquishing the opportunities offered by the other paths. You would be free of the burdens or sacrifices that come with making those choices. However, going back doesn't mean you wouldn't move forward; it simply signifies that you value the path you're currently on."
Iris felt a heaviness in her chest at the thought. "Choosing to go back sounds... safe, but I don't want to miss out on everything I could learn! What if I'm stuck in a life I don't want?"
"Not stuck, but instead, content with your decisions," Astra clarified, her voice warm and understanding. "Choosing to walk away from the paths ahead doesn't diminish your value or potential. You would simply be affirming what you already have—your life with Aunt Petunia, your family ties, and the love that surrounds you."
Iris contemplated her options, the weight of the decision resting heavily upon her shoulders. The allure of knowledge, the power of being a priestess, and the allure of family history all beckoned to her, yet the idea of retreating to safer ground was equally tempting.
"What if I want to explore my choices but also keep what I have?" Iris asked, her heart racing. "Can I do both?"
Astra smiled softly, her eyes filled with understanding. "That's the beauty of the Crossroads, Iris. There is no rush. You have time to consider what truly matters to you. Each path has its merits; it's about what you value most at this moment in your life."
As Iris stood at the intersection of her choices, she felt the magic of the Crossroads enveloping her, urging her to explore the depths of her heart. She knew her journey was just beginning, and whatever path she chose, it would be a reflection of who she was becoming.
"I know this is a lot to take in," Iris began, her voice wavering slightly. "But can you give me any advice on what to choose?"
Astra's expression softened, but there was a hint of sadness in her eyes. "I wish I could help you make that choice, my love," she replied gently. "But I cannot intervene directly. What I can do is help you reflect on your current situation and what each path represents for you."
Iris listened intently, eager for any guidance Astra could provide.
"For starters, you have already embarked on a path of family and discovery," Astra continued. "You're learning about your history, and you're building a strong bond with Petunia. This path may lead you to insights and relationships that you'll cherish."
"What about the others?" Iris asked, feeling the weight of Astra's analysis.
Astra nodded, continuing, "The first path—the path of power—would grant you new abilities, knowledge, and history from another family, the one tied to Astra's legacy. However, with that power comes the responsibility to uphold their legacy. It can be both rewarding and demanding."
Iris nodded slowly, contemplating the implications.
"Then there's the path of service," Astra explained. "This would allow you to explore the wonders of the Divine, nurturing your connection to magic and the Court. However, it would also limit your freedom, bound by their rules and expectations. It is a noble path, but one that comes with sacrifices."
"And the last path?" Iris prompted, her curiosity piqued.
"The path of knowledge," Astra said with a nod. "This path would grant you access to vast amounts of information, but it's not without its uncertainties. You won't know in advance what you'll discover, and it will require years of dedication and effort to truly make the most of it."
Iris felt overwhelmed by the weight of the decisions before her. Astra leaned closer, her violet eyes searching Iris's. "What truly matters most to you, Iris? Do you seek power? A sense of purpose? Fame and recognition? Riches?"
Iris closed her eyes, imagining each option unfolding before her—each one vibrant and alluring, yet fleeting. Thoughts whirled as she discarded one future after another, searching for the essence of what she truly wanted.
Then the answer came to her, a profound realization that resonated deep within her heart. Family. What she desired more than anything in the world was family. Despite the strong and deepening bond she had with Petunia, there had always been a hole in her life where her family should be.
"I want family," Iris whispered, her voice filled with conviction. "I want to know who I am and where I come from. I want to be connected to those I love."
Astra smiled, her expression filled with warmth and pride. "Then that is your path, my dear. Choose the road that brings you closer to your family—whatever that may mean for you. Follow your heart, and you will forge the legacy you seek."
As the significance of Astra's words settled in her heart, Iris felt a wave of clarity wash over her. She began to piece together the implications of her choices. Both the first and second paths offered enticing opportunities—a greater legacy tied to her family's illustrious history, or a grand purpose as a priestess of the Mystics. Yet, each of those paths would draw her away from what truly mattered: the chance to seek out the last member of her family.
Determination flooded her as the plan crystallized in her mind. "I have to find Astra—the real Astra, not just the part of her that's here now." Her voice held a firm resolve. "I need to know everything about her—her history, her thoughts, her plans, and what really happened on Halloween 1981."
The more she contemplated, the more she understood that the true path to her mother lay in the knowledge Astra had left behind. There was only one path that offered the opportunity to learn all of that. Astra had said it herself; she had poured everything into a book and transformed it into a guide.
"Who better to guide me to Astra than Astra herself?" Iris whispered, realization dawning bright and clear.
At that moment, the air around the Crossroads rippled with energy, acknowledging her decision. The other paths began to fade away, the enchanting fog swirling softly as if recognizing that Iris had already chosen her course.
Standing on the threshold of what she knew would be a transformative journey, Iris felt a profound sense of purpose fill her. The path of Knowledge was no longer just a choice; it was her lifeline to the truth she sought
Astra's expression shifted as she recognized the determination in Iris's eyes. "You've made your choice, my dear," she said softly, a hint of pride lacing her voice. "Good luck on your journey."
As she spoke, the Crossroads began to narrow, the other paths dissipating like mist in the morning sun, leaving only the one path that shimmered ahead. It stretched out toward a glowing light in the distance, inviting and ethereal. Iris felt a surge of excitement and purpose welling within her.
Summoning her courage, Iris firmed her resolve and stepped down the glowing path, each step echoing with the weight of her choice.
"Thank you, Astra! I will find you!" she called out, glancing back to share her determination. But just before she spoke, she felt the realm ripple around her, drawing her gaze back to Astra.
Gone was the strong, confident, and reassuring priestess who had guided her through this ordeal. The woman now sagged under an immeasurable burden, her posture defeated; her eyes, once blazing with power, now looked almost hollow, staring into nothingness. Each breath Astra took seemed to require an extraordinary effort, the weight of unseen struggles pressing down on her.
Astra met Iris's gaze, and through all the pain and loss, Iris caught the hints of longing and an unyielding spark of pure love that refused to be smothered. It filled her with warmth even amidst the sorrow. In that instant, Iris knew it was her mother—all of her.
"What happened to you?" Iris whispered, her heart aching at the sight of the woman she had longed to know, reduced from the vibrant figure of earlier to this weary semblance.
As their eyes locked, a whisper barely more than a breath reached her ears, "So... proud... love... you."
Then, in the blink of an eye, the woman faded away, leaving Iris alone on the path she had chosen.
Feeling an overwhelming mix of determination and sadness, Iris took a deep breath, allowing the weight of her mother's love to guide her forward. She couldn't forget the bond they shared or the sacrifices Astra had made. With every step she took, she felt more connected to her mother's legacy and a longing to uncover the truth that awaited her.
Far, far away, in the nexus at the gateway between the Edges and the Divine, Astra knelt above a sea of stars, her heart tethered to the magic of the cosmos. Suddenly, she gasped and sat up as if waking from a deep dream, a single tear escaping down her cheek. Looking down, she watched in dismay as one of the threads of her tattoo frayed and then faded away.
It was a bittersweet realization. "It was worth the cost," she murmured, feeling a profound sense of purpose. One of my few remaining anchors to set up the encounter at the Crossroads and to finally see my beautiful baby girl, to speak to her. Pride surged within her as she reflected on Iris's growth and the choice she had made.
With the ache of loss lingering, Astra looked up, sensing the wheels of the world beginning to turn once more. "So it begins," she whispered, her voice barely above a breath. A wave of uncertainty washed over her as she contemplated whether everything she had done would be enough to see Iris through the trials that lay ahead.
Glancing around herself, Astra took in the vastness of the nexus. Multiple massive ritual circles spread out before her, some only partially finished and others filled with intricate designs. Floating runes and arithmantic calculations, complex and awe-inspiring, drifted like stars, showcasing a level of mastery that could intimidate even the most skilled practitioners.
Now that Iris is following her path, I must complete my own, Astra thought, a renewed sense of determination igniting within her. With a steadying breath, she returned to her work.
