Ursus Empire's Capital City of Sankt Grypherburg / April 1st, Year 1094 / 9:00 PM / Cloudy...

Fyodor Ivanovich, ruler of Ursus, shook his head as he passed the final batch of documents and decrees he issued and signed for the day. He rubbed the back of his neck as the soreness became a little too uncomfortable.

His eyes shifted to the view outside, a gentle breeze blew into the office and washed over him. Stretching his arms, Fyodor sighed as he stood up and left his room, picking up an overcoat on his way out.

The emperor of Ursus calmly treaded the gardens of his palace in silence, his hands clasped behind him as he observed his surroundings. Finding a bench, Fyodor sat and shifted his gaze to the night sky and the moons illuminating it.

In moments like this, he felt freed from the burdens placed upon him. A pleasant tranquility which provided reprieve from the stress and the constant pressure he was under as he navigated through the empire's treacherous political landscape.

Between the nobility, the military and the external threats, everything felt so needlessly complicated. It was maddening, and the years of experience failed to make it any easier.

Is the happiness and prosperity of the nation truly something so far from their reach?

Fyodor's shoulders momentarily slumped as he sighed, his grim and solemn face making him look much older than he was. His hand reached for the pendant hanging from his neck, a gentle warmth emanating from it and banishing the needless thoughts from his mind.

He closed his eyes as he pondered on his life and the choices he made, wondering if he was truly making a difference at all.

'What would you have done, old friend?'

The question brought a smile to the young emperor's face, the figure of an unremarkable Ursus man standing in front of his people with a smile on his face, despite the burden he willingly accepted, remained clear in his memory. Melancholy encompassed Fyodor's heart, his eyes seemingly looking somewhere far in the horizons.

"Your Majesty, is there something wrong?"

Alyosha's deep voice brought Fyodor from his turbulent emotions. The emperor smiled as his loyal guard handed him a cup of lemon tea, the fresh taste bringing him clarity.

"No need to worry, Alyosha. I was just wondering if there was an end to the feeling of missing someone."

"I see. I once wondered the same thing."

Fyodor took a sip of his drink, before he glanced at his Grand Sword. The giant man smiled as he crossed his arms, eyes calmly observing the stars.

"Is that so? Did you come across an answer?"

"I did. It took me a while and a lot of traveling, but eventually I came to realize that such a feeling would likely remain in me for as long as I live. Those I miss are within everything I do, whether I like it or not, and I found that accepting such a fact was the best option to move forward in a meaningful way."

The emperor remained silent as he looked at the stoic guard, Alyosha's already impressive frame felt much more imposing as his back straightened and his gaze sharpened. For a brief moment, his figure overlapped the image of a young, scrawny boy whose eyes shone with hope and courage before it vanished. Fyodor contemplated Alyosha's words as he turned his attention to the sky, letting out a refreshed sigh.

"I still have a lot to learn, even after all these years. Thank you for your words, Alyosha."

"It is my pleasure, your Majesty."

Standing up, the ruler of Ursus began his walk back to his palace, accompanied by the Grand Sword. Once inside, Alyosha reached his hand into his overcoat and pulled out a file before handing it over to Fyodor.

"Is this Alexander's latest report?"

"Yes. The Reunion movement has shown strict adherence to the agreement between us and have been performing well in organizing the infected with our support. Although that is not as surprising as the news he brought this time."

The emperor stopped in his tracks as his brow rose in confusion, the Royal Guard silently gesturing to the file.

"It appears Childe Akhmatov wishes to head to Syracuse. Although Alexander knows little of him to tell, I have it on good authority that Edward seeks to see his uncle, the reason for that eludes me unfortunately."

Fyodor nodded and opened the file while they continued walking. His eyes narrowed as he examined Alexander's analysis of the movement's leadership as well as the Sarkaz forces with them.

"Contact the elder of Syracuse and inform her of this, I want her to keep an eye on him."

"Of course, your Majesty."

"Anything else require my attention?"

"Yes, mother Agnessa is taking a 'small' vacation. She wants to see Buldrokkas'tee. She plans to leave tomorrow morning."

Fyodor snorted in amusement as he closed the file, turning to give Alyosha a shaky smile. Alyosha's face remained stoic, barring the minute twitch of his lips as he promptly placed his hands behind his back and clenched his fists to maintain his composure.

"Pray tell, how long is this 'small' vacation?"

"...The better part of six months. The children have been informed."

The emperor's face visibly paled as his smile disappeared, Alyosha looked grim as he let out a long sigh. The two of them nodded to each other, a glint passing in their eyes as they knew full well of how unruly the children get when they are aware Agnessa isn't around.

"We must prepare for the children's needs in the meantime, leave no detail unchecked if you don't want them to eat us whole."

Alyosha nodded, following Fyodor as the two walked deeper into the dimly lit hallways. Passing by the library, Fyodor noticed the lights were turned on. Intrigued, the emperor peeked through the slightly open door and saw Duchess Kulikova sitting next to the window next to a pile of books.

"I highly recommend you join her, your Majesty."

The emperor didn't spare his Royal Guard a glance, already knowing full well Alyosha was smirking widely by now. In the end, he decided to humor his subordinate and entered the library while Alyosha was content with standing at the entrance.

The Duchess noticed the ruler's approach, immediately standing and curtseying with an elegance befitting her station.

"Duchess Kulikova greets his Majesty."

"There is no need for such rigid formalities, my lady."

The Ursus woman smiled gently as Fyodor approached the table she put her books on, casually skimming through the titles and the subjects.

"It seems your ladyship has a passion for history."

"I do, your Majesty. I wished to take a deeper look at the policies implemented by past nobles and emperors for inspiration."

Beckoning her to sit down, Fyodor retrieved one of the books before he noticed the notes belonging to the Duchess. He smiled as he sat down next to her, the woman growing timid at the close distance between them.

"May I ask, why did you choose to do this at such a late hour?"

"My duties and meetings with the ministers took much of my time. I could only find the peace and quiet I needed for such studies at night. I apologize if I inconvenienced your Majesty."

The emperor chuckled as he shook his head and calmly took in the content of the lady's notes. Her deconstruction of past policies and their shortcomings was impressive in its accuracy, drawing an approving nod from the ruler. His sleepiness seemed to vanish as he opened the book closest to him under the incredulous stare of the noble lady.

"Please bring us refreshments, Alyosha."

"As you command, your Majesty."

"Pardon?"

Fyodor offered a friendly smile as he gestured to the notes and books.

"Would your ladyship find my company and aid in your research acceptable?"

"Wh-I mean, I would be honored, your Majesty."

Fyodor nodded and began to read through the book in his hand silently, purposefully ignoring the glances the Duchess sent his way as they worked on some ideas and concepts for new policies.

All the while, a certain Royal Guard was brimming with pride as he attempted multiple times to subtly encourage his ruler to make more effort into connecting with the Duchess as they worked.

For his part, Fyodor was adamant on having a very important conversation with his Grand Sword in the near future about such behavior.

Should they survive the children at least.

Ursus Empire's Western Heartlands / April 2nd, Year 1094 / 10:00 AM / Overcast...

Edward breathed in the fresh morning breeze, the refreshing weather of the prosperous regions of Ursus was a blessing welcomed by everyone after enduring the biting cold of the tundras and the punishing heat of the deserts.

Twirling his flute, the magus took a moment to observe the changes he added to the instrument. The once mundane wooden flute now shone an ominous red under the sunlight, courtesy of the refined originium Edward transmuted into it. With a heavy sigh, he sat in the middle of the grassfields; a frown on his face as he noted the dark coloration covering most of the flute.

His mind drifted to his approaching departure, a pit formed in his stomach as he closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead at the thought of meeting his uncle after the death of his parents. However, he has promises to keep.

Edward sighed and stood up, silently wishing for a nice bath after so long. Walking back to the camp, his steps came to a halt as he spotted the huddled form of Mudrock in a corner by the bushes. She appeared to be talking to something, His eyes widened when he approached and spotted the clay doll in the Sarkaz warrior's hands.

A playful smile spread on his face as he held his instrument in hand and began to play it, his arts using it as a catalyst. Mudrock was surprised as the doll in her grasp jumped and stood on the ground, waving at her. The magus held back the laughter which threatened to break his tune as the woman's bulky hands gently waved back. With a small shift in his tune, the doll's hand reached out towards her, a silent gesture Mudrock reciprocated with a gentle handshake.

Edward spotted two other dolls on the ground, his tempo growing more cheerful as his arts commanded them. Murdrock watched the two other clay dolls approaching her and climbing her arms before they hugged her horns, the mercenary's cheerful chuckle not diminished in the slightest by the distortion caused by her helmet.

Edward moved to stand next to her, his tune slowly coming to an end as the three dolls moved to stand in front of Mudrock and saluted her before they fell to the ground lifelessly. Picking them up, Mudrock turned to Edward and nodded towards him.

"Thank you…my friends love your tunes."

"It's my pleasure."

The two of them left in the direction of the camp while they engaged in smalltalk about the day. Once they reached the camp, the two of them spotted Petrova watching something behind the cover of a tent. Sensing their approach, Petrova swiftly turned to them and gestured for them to remain silent once she recognized them.

Intrigued, Edward leaned over to see what had Petrova so careful. His eyes widened as he spotted Yelena speaking with Randt in a secluded spot, the two of them looking cheerful. Watching FrostNova chuckle, the magus's heart filled with a sense of relief and happiness, a warm smile appearing on his face as he shook his head.

"Petrova, you should give them some privacy."

"But brother, I'm just looking out for big sis."

"Don't worry, Randt is a good man. Besides, Yelena hardly needs any help. I'd be more worried about Randt."

Petrova pouted indignantly, huffing as she crossed her arms and refused to meet his gaze. Edward scoffed at her behavior, choosing to simply pat her head and leave along with Mudrock, his mood visibly better. Mudrock observed him in typical silence, her face perfectly masked under her helmet.

"Are you departing today?"

"Yes. I'm leaving tonight."

"For how long are you going to be gone?"

"It's hard to say, but I should be back near the end of next year."

Mudrock went silent, her demeanor unreadable as she nodded and followed the magus around. She awkwardly nodded as the people around greeted them, managing to wave back once she spotted Bob on the side checking his chainsaw. He was one of few the Sarkaz managed to befriend in her stay so far, having been introduced to many of Edward's associates and siblings by the magus.

It felt…nice to be in such warm company, despite how awkward and unsure she was on what to do. Her eyes trailed to the back of one of the movement's heroes, his figure lacking the domineering presence of the Wendigo leader and the charismatic aura the draco leader exuded. Yet, his presence felt special in its own way. Gentle. Unique in its lack of expectations, but warm in its invitation.

She was far from being the only one with such thoughts. Be it the infected soldiers and civilians traveling with them, or the mercenaries, the Ursus man was held in great regard despite the recent events.

Stopping in her tracks, her hand grasped his shoulder to get his attention. Edward turned to see the Sarkaz warrior handing him one of the clay dolls without a word. The magus silently took the doll and stared at it for a brief moment, before he turned his attention back to Mudrock.

"Why did you hand me this?"

"You'll be lonely on the road, my friend can keep you company."

"Thank you. It's kind of you."

Edward smiled as he placed the doll in one of his pockets. Deciding to start on his final preparations, Edward smiled and patted Mudrock's shoulder before he turned around and walked away.

"I still have some stuff to check, I'll see you later if I can."

"Take care."

Jogging his way to his tent, Edward entered his resting place and grimaced at the messy state it was in. He awkwardly stepped towards the table while trying to avoid the used materials on the ground. Reaching the table, Edward rubbed his forehead as he observed the papers laid all over its corners.

'I've really been procrastinating on our projects a lot lately, haven't I?'

'It is evident. I have taken it upon myself to place the puppet arm in incubation after finalizing the structural integrity and the stability of the components. I've also performed the necessary measurements and calculations for the bodies we are going to make for the Wendigo and the Cautus.'

'Thank you, Eden. I don't know what I would do without you.'

'I find the thought dreadful. In any case, the arm is now in the incubation phase and would be ready for transplant in two months.'

Edward deadpanned at his partner's response, shaking his head as he organized his notes. Shifting the numerous papers about, Edward froze as his fingers brushed against a simple looking red thread, the magus's eyes widened as he realized he left it here. Taking the thread in his hand, Edward tied the thread to his belt and resumed his cleaning efforts.

Two hours later, the magus let out a sigh of relief as he wiped his sweat with a towel. Leaving his tent, Edward trudged towards the supply storage to drop the supplies he kept in his inventory. As he neared the transport vehicules, he saw Lazarus casually discussing with a Sarkaz mercenary. Once the soldiers took notice of his presence, Lazarus dismissed his companion as he approached.

"Hello Lazarus, is everything alright?"

"All's good, just trying to teach some battle maniacs not to accidentally blow up our stores."

"And how is that going for you?"

"Better than I expected, but it's still a work in progress. What are you doing here?"

"I'm just here to drop the supplies I have on me."

Lazarus grimaced, dreading the workload about to be dumped on him. He turned on his comm device, and called a number of soldiers and mercenaries over. As he turned it off, he sighed and gestured for Edward to deposit his portion of the supplies.

The magus tried to maintain a neutral expression as he placed whatever supplies he had in front of them while noticing the soldier next to him frowning more and more as the pile grew. Once he was done, Edward carefully stepped away and left Lazarus behind as the latter began cursing to the high heavens.

Offering a silent prayer to Lazarus, Edward moved closer to the river near the encampment for some downtime. His eyes spotted the flying kites easily enough, the cheerful laughter of children reaching his ears not long after. Edward smiled while leaning against the tree, watching as the kids played under the supervision of Alina, Sasha and Eno.

Or was it Faust and Mephisto now?

Their choice of new names aside, Edward was certainly proud of the progress the two made since they first met. Watching the two awkwardly taking care of their juniors with Alina brought a satisfied smile on his face.

Edward's body tensed as two arms circled his neck from behind, hot breath tickling the back of his neck as a head rested on his shoulder. His eyes caught a glimpse of Talulah's hair, his hand grasping hers as Draco chuckled.

"You let your guard down."

"I guess I'll do it more if this is what I'll get."

Talulah let go of Edward, reaching out to grab his hand and guiding him away from the kids and through the trees. The magus took in the sight of his companion in her new outfit, her black knee length dress swaying in the breeze, the intricate red lines decorating it illuminating under the warm sunlight. The two of them stopped in a small clearing, slowly walking around and enjoying each other's company. Talulah glanced towards her companion, her smile retracting slightly.

"Do you have to leave for so long?"

Edward's smile slowly vanished as his grip on Talulah's hand tightened. He nodded without a word as he scratched his head.

"Alexander informed me the trip is going to take two months at least, and I honestly want to spend as much time as I can there. However, the takeover would only happen in December of next year. Based on the progress of the Ursus agents in the city. I'll definitely return in November."

Turning to Talulah, Edward held her hands and stared into her eyes. Talulah huffed and pulled her hands away, crossing her arms as she turned around while her tail swished around.

"We promised to treat each other with sincerity, yet you didn't tell me why this trip is so important."

Edward flinched, his hand reaching for Talulah's shoulder before it froze. The magus placed his hands on his waist as he sighed, contemplating whether to tell Talulah or not. He looked at his lover, a tinge of guilt welling in his chest.

"I'm sorry. I didn't want to bother you with my family problems."

"Are you kidding me?"

Talulah instantly turned around and approached Edward, her hands holding his cheeks as she stared into his eyes.

"Your burdens are also my burdens, don't you dare shy away from me about such things."

The two stood there in silence, until Edward chuckled.

"You're right. I guess I was overthinking it."

Sighing, Edward held Talulah's hands and took a deep breath.

"I'm going to see my little brother. When things went downhill for our family, he was with my uncle in Syracuse. I promised my parents that I'll make sure he's safe. I didn't think I'd get an opportunity to leave for a long period of time, and I'm sure I won't be able to leave once we reach Chernobog, so I couldn't miss this chance."

Talulah's eyes widened briefly, sympathy welled up in her chest as her thoughts drifted to her own sister back in Lungmen. She wondered how Hui-Chieh was doing, her heart aching at the thought of meeting her after so long.

Does she still remember her? Would she be happy to see her again?

Noticing Edward's saddened face as he looked at her, Talulah shook her head and smiled reassuringly.

"Is that all? I was expecting much worse."

"Does that mean you…?"

"Don't be late, though. Otherwise, I'll come and drag you back myself."

Edward smiled back at his lover, a huge burden lifted off his heart as his fears of her reaction were dispelled. Nodding at her words, Edward's eyes widened as he remembered something, his hand reaching for the red thread he picked up earlier.

"I almost forgot. I wanted to give you something."

Talulah's eyes traced his hand inquisitively, her face shifting in shock as she caught sight of the thread. Silently she allowed Edward to grab her hand and hold her ring finger before she noticed him observing her reaction with clear worry.

"Is this ok with you?"

His consideration was endearing, and it only fueled the rising happiness in her heart as she nodded with an encouraging smile on her face. Talulah watched attentively as Edward tied the thread around her finger, before cutting a part of it and tying it to his own finger. In that moment, the two became lost in their own little world, uncaring for the pair of eyes watching them behind the cover of the trees.

Edward felt as if all three partitions of his mind stopped working as he saw the happiness on Talulah's face, her fingers caressing the thread gently. He smiled and remained silent, hoping for the moment to last as long as possible.

The two were startled as the familiar tunes of a flute reached their ears. Edward turned around and saw Yelena walking near them while playing his tune with what looked to be a flute made of ice. FrostNova gave the duo a cursory glance and sat down next to a tree, her tunes a fine replication of Edward's.

His attention returning to Talulah, the magus decided to capitalize on the moment as he bowed and reached out to her.

"Would my lady care for a dance?"

The Draco smirked as she held his hand and got up close.

"Can you keep up with me, little bear?"

Edward smiled and initiated their dance, his partner finding no difficulty matching his moves. Yelena's eyes followed their figures all the while she played her tune, taking in every detail of her brother's face on their last day together before he left. As soon as Yelena's tunes ended, the two of them ended their dance and moved to sit beside her. The Cautus adamantly chose to sit next to her brother and cuddle up to him more than usual, her ears twitching as he patted her.

"I didn't know you knew how to play the flute, Yelena."

"Randt taught me, he used to be a music teacher."

Edward chuckled as the realization dawned on him, a tinge of amusement on his face as he thought back to the paranoid Petrova. The magus idly wondered how long it would take his sister to realize her assumptions about Yelena and Randt were wrong.

The three of them sat together in silence as they watched the sunset, Yelena leaving not long after to check on her siblings.

"I'll go ahead, I put off my duties for too long."

Talulah sighed as she stood up to leave as well, dusting her dress off before she turned around to leave. She froze for a brief moment as she caught sight of Buldrokkas'tee's approaching figure before she passed him by with a silent nod.

Edward noticed the Wendigo's approach once he got close, the two easily falling into an awkward silence. The magus's eyes widened as his head was completely covered in the imposing Wendigo's hand as Patriot gently patted him.

"There is. no need. for words between us."

Edward looked up to meet Patriot's gaze, the helmet perfectly masking any expression the old soldier had. Although the magus doubted seeing his gray-white skull would make any difference, Edward chose to believe the Wendigo was smiling.

"Yeah. I'll finish this business and come back before you know it."

"You will find. Alexander. waiting for you. east of the camp. along with supplies."

Patriot nodded silently, before he began walking away. Edward watched his figure disappear amidst the trees with a knowing smile.

Buldrokkas'tee doesn't like goodbyes.

Deciding to depart at last, Edward moved to the east while searching for Alexander. Spotting the big bike, Edward approached the Ursus soldier leaning against the vehicule, his enigmatic smile ever present on his face.

"Childe Akhmatov, I assume you are ready?"

"Yes, are preparations done?"

"Indeed, the bike is prepared for the journey, with extra fuel packed in the tank in the back. It should be more than enough to take you to Flore, as well as handle most terrains you might go through."

Edward couldn't begin to describe whatever the hell kind of bike it was, but the slick design from the tires to the handlebars made it more than clear that it was EXPENSIVE with caps. He didn't know much about bikes, but he at least knew tires weren't supposed to shine after a drive on dirt roads.

"Thank you for your aid."

"Always a pleasure, although I believe your farewells aren't done."

Alexander gestured for him to turn around, the magus spotting the many figures of his closest friends and family approaching. A part of Edward wanted to avoid such a meeting right before he left, the taste of parting leaving him saddened, but he also felt happy just to spend one more moment with them before he went on his way.

Yelena was the first to approach him, her eyes betraying nothing as she silently observed him. Her sights soon zoned in on his holy shroud, before she gestured for it with her outstretched hand. Edward could only laugh as he removed the shroud and walked towards FrostNova, gently tucking the shroud around her neck.

"I'll take good care of it."

"I know you will, little star."

His eyes shifted to the Yetis behind Yelena, a sharp ache in his chest as he spotted Ofnir and the others crying in the back, trying their best to keep their sobs as silent as possible while Petrova, Faust, Eno and the ones in the front remained uncharacteristicly silent.

He's not having any of it.

"You're not sending me off with such sad faces, are you? My heart is in pieces right now."

"No!"

"Then show me those straight backs and brilliant smiles."

Their response brought a smirk on his face, the magus giving them a thumbs up as he saw the Yetis and two teens straighten up and smile his way.

"That's much better. You listen to your eldest sister and the others while I'm away."

"Sure thing, big bro!"

"Now then…"

Edward turned to the Sarkaz trio standing right next to the group of yetis. His eyes met FlameBringer's for a split second, the fierce swordmaster's smirk failing to contain his untamed fighting spirit.

"I've yet to have my fill of your weapons, so do not keep me waiting, Reaper."

"Right, I'm not missing you. Keep everyone safe."

The magus deadpanned at the amused warrior, shaking his head as he moved to the silent Mudrock.

"...Take care."

"Thanks, you too."

With a nod, Edward turned his attention to the last person next to the trio. W lazily shifted her attention from her nails to the magus, her usual disturbing smile on her face.

"I didn't expect to see you here, W."

"I'm honestly offended, boss. Coming here is the least I could do for what you offered me. A girl has to show appreciation when it's due, you know~."

"Thanks, I guess. Just do me a favor and don't blow the camp into smithereens in my absence."

"Sure thing, boss."

Edward held back from smirking as the shameless vixen crossed her fingers right in front of him without a care. Moving to the last of the group, Edward stood before Talulah and Alina. The Elafia approached him and placed a small white tassel in his hand.

"It's a good luck token. Please take good care of yourself."

"Thanks, I'll keep it close."

Alina smiled gently before she poked the unusually silent raven perched on her shoulder. Kutcha cawed indignantly before he moved to sit on Edward's shoulder, the troublemaker affectionately rubbing his head against the magus's cheek.

"I'll miss you too, little rascal."

Alina glanced at the silent Talulah, before she beckoned Kutcha and moved to stand with the others. With only the two of them close, Edward held his lover's hand and gently caressed the thread on her ring finger.

"Once I come back, I'll bring something far better than this for you. On that day, I wish to properly propose to you and hear your response. Until then, please wait for me."

Edward gently kissed Talulah's forehead, his eyes brimming with joy as he saw her smile.

"I'll wait. Once you return, we can finally go to the home that awaits us beyond all the battles ahead."

She moved forward and embraced him one last time, her eyes closing as she imagined a day when they would live peacefully as they grew old together. A beautiful smile blossomed on her face.

'Where you and I can spend all seasons together.'

Reluctantly, the lovers let go of each other as the magus swiftly moved to the bike. Only Alexander was able to see the magus's face while Edward tried his best to repress the tears in his eyes, the soldier remaining stoic and expressionless as he patted the youngster's shoulder.

"Hold your tears, young one. Look forward to the joy of your reunion instead."

Edward nodded and got on the bike, the engine roaring to life as he turned the key after he wore his helmet. Twisting the handle bar, the magus didn't turn back as the bike soon disappeared in the horizons with impressive speed.

The reunion members watched as Edward disappeared into the night before they dispersed one by one. Talulah was the last one to leave, her eyes meeting those of the mysterious woman. Talulah folded her hands in front of her chest and bowed slightly.

"Look after him for me."

'Have no fear, he shall return to you unharmed.'

The woman disappeared into motes of blue particles before her eyes. Talulah let out a long sigh before she headed back to camp, glancing towards the red thread tied to her ring finger fondly.

'Until we meet again, my soulmate.'
