Chapter 30
Abigail sat next to her brother in one of the many cars that he owned. Her eyes slid over to him seeing that he was studying the holograms.
"Query complete sir. Anton Vanko was a Soviet physicist who defected to the United States in , he was accused of espionage and was deported in 1967. His son, Ivan, who is also a physicist, was convicted of selling Soviet-era weapons grade plutonium to Pakistan, and served 15 years in Kopeisk prison. No further records exist." Jarvis explained to the two of them.
Abigail pursed her lips together knowing that what Jarvis was saying was very much true.
Rhodey entered the room. "Tony, you gotta get upstairs and get on top of this situation right now. Listen. I've been on the phone with the National Guard all day, trying to talk them out of rolling tanks up the PCH, knocking down your front door and taking these. They're gonna take your suits, Tony, okay? They're sick of the games. You said nobody else would possess this technology for 20 years. Well, guess what? Somebody else had it yesterday. It's not theoretical anymore. Are you listening to me? Are you okay?"
"Let's go." Tony said as he got out of the car but fell.
Rhodey grabbed him. "Hey, man. Hey, hey! You all right?"
"Yeah, I should get to my desk." He said as Rhodey supported him. "See that cigar box?"
"Yeah."
"It's palladium."
Abigail moved quickly to the box, grabbing it and taking one of the palladium cores out.
Tony removed the arc reactor that was smoking.
Rhodey's brows furrowed together in concern. "Is that supposed to be smoking?"
"If you must know, it's neutron damage. It's from the reactor wall." Tony said as he took the core out of the arc reactor, handing it to Abigail who handed him a new one.
"You had this in your body? And how about the high-tech crossword puzzle on your neck?"
"Road rash. Thank you." He said as he put the arc reactor into his chest. He picked up the water bottle that had green liquid in it. "What are you looking at?"
Abigail bit her lip softly knowing that this wasn't a good sign.
"I'm looking at you. You wanna do this whole lone gunslinger act and it's unnecessary. You don't have to do this alone."
"You know, I wish I could believe that. I really do. But you've gotta trust me. Contrary to popular belief, I know exactly what I'm doing."
Abigail cleared her throat. "Rhodey, I'm going to get him to lay down a bit." She said as she slung Tony's arm over her shoulder.
Rhodey nodded his head. "Alright. If you need anything you know who to call."
Abigail nodded her head giving Rhodey a small smile. "Yeah. I know to call you if I need anything. Thank you Rhodey."
Rhodey turned on his heels. "I'll see you both later." He said with a wave of his hand leaving Tony and Abigail in the lab.
Abigail's eyes slid over to Tony. "Am I going to be the only one to know that you're slowly poisoning yourself with palladium?"
"I didn't want you to know either."
"Tony." Abigail let out a breath as she helped him towards the cot that was set up in the lab. "I can't be the only one that knows about this… Sooner or later Rhodey and Pepper are going to find out about this. They won't be happy that you're hiding this… We really need to find something to take the place of the palladium."
"We've gone through everything… nothing else is as good as the palladium. You know that."
Abigail gently put him down onto the bed letting out a breath shaking her head lightly. "You have to try. You can't keep doing stupid shit Tony. Sooner or later it is going to kill you. I'm not going to stick around and see that happen to you." Abigail covered him up with a blanket. "I don't want to lose you Tony. You made Pepper the CEO of our company…"
Tony looked tiredly at his sister. "You're upset with her being CEO?"
Abigail looked at Tony with a bewildered look. "Yes, I'm upset with the choice Tony." She said feeling rather upset that he didn't know that she was angry with Pepper being the CEO of Stark Industries. "When you were gone in the Middle East, I stepped up as CEO, quitting school for you. I did everything for this company and you just easily handed it over to Pepper."
"You didn't approve of what we were doing."
"Tony that may be the case, but you've changed the direction the company is going and I was behind you on this… And you didn't think that maybe, just maybe a Stark should be CEO?" Abigail shook her head lightly, moving away from him. "Get some rest." She said turning on her heels.
"Abs…"
Abigail shook her head as she used the pin number to get out of the lab. She couldn't be around him at that very moment. She couldn't believe that he didn't think she was upset with Pepper becoming CEO. It was their legacy that their father had built and it was going down the tubes because he was becoming reckless.
