Deep inside the Sea of Death, near the base of Ar Tonelico, sealed within a room, there lay a single music box, endlessly playing the same song on repeat. Though the mechanism that kept it moving had never been fully understood, this unassuming item was in fact the keystone of the tower – the Orgel of Origins. Giant panels collected the symphonic power emitted by the music box, funnelling the power into conduits that flowed up through the tower. Up, up, up it flowed, emerging from the Sea of Death, flowing past the Plasma Bell that held the continent in place, past the Sylva Horn that executed grathmeld programs, until it reached the Ardelberg Buffer Band.
Here was a point where the tower was cleanly cut in half. The lower and upper tower weren't even connected physically, yet some force held the two halves fast together. Between the two halves floated a gigantic ardel crystal with a massive ring surrounding it, giving it the appearance of a huge eye and earning it its nickname, the Frozen Eye.
Something slipped into the symphonic power stream just be fore it hit the Frozen Eye, joining the upward surge of power. The power rushed on upwards, passing through the ardel crystal and entering the conduits of the upper tower. Finally, it reached the Symphonic Reactor, which broke up that surge into many smaller conduits, funnelling it to wherever it was needed.
But the thing that had slipped into the stream before the Frozen Eye now exited the flow of power, manifesting itself into the physical world through flip-flop conversion. For a moment, the lighting within the Symphonic Reactor chamber flickered out, startling the Knights of Elemia on monitoring duty. They turned towards the centre of the chamber, the reactor that was now only remaining source of light, but then the lights all came back on. There now stood at the centre of the chamber a strange black and red creature, looking like it was half robot and half living organism. It had a form similar to a pig, with short legs and an oversized head, but it also bore a long blade affixed to the tip of its nose, and four more more attached like wings to its shoulder. A sixth blade served as a tail. Bit by bit, smaller creatures began to pop up around it in its own likeness, but the smaller ones were white and bore fewer blades than the main one. In fact, it would not be a stretch to call the main one a corrupted form of the white ones.
"W-what on earth is that!?" one of the knights gasped.
"A new type of virus!?" a reyvateil gasped.
"Someone, send a report back at once!" another knight shouted.
One of the knights fiddled with a handheld device, then shouted back.
"It's no good!" he said. "That thing's jamming our signal!"
"Then you'll have to run to the city!" the previous knight said.
"G-got it!"
The knight who'd been attempting to contact the city on the telemo turned and hurried out of the room. As the strange creature stood there, observing the knights getting ready to defend themselves, the room began to shake, lightly at first, then more intensely. Before long, the entire upper part of the tower was shaking violently.
Not far away, just a few stons above the altitude of the Symphonic Reactor, Sonnet was roused from a deep sleep by the sudden shaking. She sat up in bed with a gasp and looked around in confusion. Then a klaxon resounded across the city, spurring her into motion. It was the same klaxon she'd heard over and over in drills for the past three years, but this time it was clearly not a drill. Though it wasn't like this was the first time – there had been several real alerts over that time as well.
She swung her feet out of bed and got dressed as quickly as she could, hurrying out from her residence and making her way towards the centre of the city. As she passed through Apsaranika Park, she rammed right into a young man coming from a different direction, the impact propelling them apart. She landed on her butt with a yelp, and the young man leapt to his feet and offered her a hand. She gasped as she realized who she'd just collided with.
"S-sir Lyner!?" she gasped. "I-I'm so very sorry!"
He was the only son of Commander Leard who had joined the knights not long before Sonnet. That made him something of a celebrity, especially among the knights.
"What are you apologizing for?" Lyner asked. "It's an emergency, so don't sweat it. More importantly, are you alright…?"
"Ah… y-yeah, I'm fine," Sonnet said.
She reluctantly accepted the helping hand and got back to her feet, following Lyner as he headed straight for the great cathedral. However, while Lyner charged straight into the cathedral for answers, she instead joined the Knights of Elemia who were currently gathering in the courtyard before the cathedral, locating the position assigned to her squad. As it happened, she was the first of her squad to arrive, so she just stood there, waiting for orders.
Suddenly, Shurelia appeared before them in her linkage suit, zapping herself into the courtyard via flip-flop conversion, and all the knights present saluted and bowed.
"Lady Shurelia!" they chorused.
Even Sonnet joined in. She had chosen to join the knights primarily out of gratitude towards Shurelia, after all. Shurelia briefly turned to the knights to say a few words.
"Wait here for further instructions," she said.
And with that, she turned and headed inside the cathedral. The chatter that had instantly died down with her appearance began to start up again, and before long the three young knights assigned to Sonnet's squad had joined her. She wasn't on especially good terms with any of them, but they were decent enough men, she thought. They treated her with respect and kindness, and she did her utmost to keep them safe and healthy in battle.
It wasn't long before Shurelia emerged again, followed by Lyner. She paused to make a brief announcement.
"I will lead an investigation squad to the Altar of Apostles," she said. "Lyner and Ayatane shall accompany me. Until our return, guard the city and destroy any viruses that enter it."
There was a chorus of "Yes ma'am!" in response. The other man she'd named, a strange man in red leather armour and unusual clothes, stepped over from where he'd been standing at the edge of the courtyard, and the three of them made for Apsaranika Park where the stairs to the Symphonic Reactor were. Then the knight commander, Heinrich, barked out orders for each of the squads, and the knights leapt into action, each squad heading for a different location where viruses might appear.
And appear they did, a combination of known viruses and corrupted versions of Shurelia's ELMA guardian, the white ones that unbeknownst to Sonnet had been used as a model by the primary virus. Sonnet's squad had destroyed four or five groups of viruses when the thrumming sound of a flipper engine was heard below. Sonnet might have been the only one on her squad to recognize that sound – after, she had heard it in Firefly Alley and Nemo, three years ago. With a gasp, she ran for the nearest balcony and looked off, just in time to see Platina's sole airship take off and zoom outwards.
"The airship!?" she gasped. "W-what's going on…? This is the first time I've ever seen it fly…"
Her squadmates stepped up beside her. The squad leader, a heavyset man with a slightly lopsided face, remarked upon it.
"I've never seen it fly either," he said. "It may well be the first time it's been flown since the Covenant…"
Sonnet watched in consternation as a huge dragon emerged from the Blast Line and attacked the airship with a huge stream of flames, sending it careening down to the Wings of Horus, far below.
"I hope whoever's in there survives that," Sonnet mused. "If they're using the airship, it must be something really important…"
3770 AD, Karulu village, Wings of Horus.
Aurica stood in the shadow of one of the towers of Karulu village, sighing. She held up a hand and tried singing a little. However, though it briefly summoned a small flame to her hand, it spluttered and failed as she kept singing, so she stopped.
"It doesn't matter how I sing," she muttered. "It just disappears immediately… it's telling me I can't sing. That means I have no talent, right? I'm class D, after all…"
She sighed again. Radolf and Fayma were out subjugating monsters with the other knights of the church, yet all she could do was sit back and wait for them in the village. Why had she even come on this mission in the first place?
Suddenly she was distracted from her morose thoughts by the sound of a cat meowing. She knelt down to smile at it.
"You again, huh?" she said. "Always thinking I have food… but I only came to exterminate monsters today. Though even if I say that, it doesn't help the fact that I'm useless…"
Throughout her monologue, the cat continued to meow, and suddenly Aurica noticed that its left foreleg had a cut on it.
"Ah! Your leg is wounded…? Did you get in a fight with someone?"
She raised her hand and closed her eyes, thinking of trying some healing magic, but then she thought better of it.
"A wound like that will heal quickly," she said.
Somehow the cat seemed to understand what she said, and after one final meow of protest, it turned and scurried off. Aurica immediately regretted her words, but it was too late – the cat had already disappeared from sight.
"Ah…"
Aurica sighed as a wind began to pick up.
"I'm told to help people, and I do my best, but it's just impossible," she muttered. "I just can't do it… ahhh, isn't there someone willing to save me…?"
Shielding her eyes from the bright sunlight, she gazed up at the sky. It was then that she spotted something moving high up in the air – an airship of some design she'd never seen before, rapidly descending from an incredible altitude.
"That is… an airship!? From the top of the tower? Out of the upper stratum!?"
She watched for another few seconds and soon realized that it was coming down far faster than was safe.
"O-oh no!" she gasped. "It's going to crash!"
Even if she was useless most of the time… maybe just this once, she could be useful to someone. It stood to reason that she wasn't the first person to spot the airship descending, but there were no signs yet of movement from the villagers, and the knights would have trouble spotting it easily from amidst the trees. If she arrived first, then maybe…!
With that in mind, she jumped up and ran towards the estimated landing site, ducking into Viola Forest. Fortunately, the sound of the airship seemed to have sent all the monsters into hiding, though if it was only a nyo she would've been able to take it on by herself… or at least, she would be in no real danger. As she ran, she heard the sounds of trees snapping under the impact of something huge as the airship finally made contact with the land. Not long after that, she arrived at a trail of carnage winding through the forest. Following the trail to the site of the crash, she found that the airship had been very lucky – it had stopped just short of the precipice. Any further, and it would have plunged right off into the Sea of Death, lost forever… unless by some miracle it had managed to crash down on Firefly Alley, but that floating city was quite a bit closer to the tower than this remote village.
Aurica climbed up to check the airship's cockpit, but there was no-one there – it seemed the pilot had been thrown clear. Looking around for a moment, she tried to guess which way he might have been thrown, but there were no clues that she could spot, so she picked a direction at random, continuing past the crash into the woods in the hopes of finding him.
After a minute or two, she found him laying on the ground about a hundred or so stons away from the crash site, or at least she assumed he had to be the pilot. He wore strange clothes, but seemed to be about the same age as her. Perhaps he really was from the upper world.
"They call them the people from the tower, or the apostles of Elemia," she mused. "But he looks just like a normal person…"
However… he lay there motionless, so she knelt to check on him. She immediately realized that he was badly hurt. Unlike the cat from earlier, she couldn't write this off as something you would recover from quickly… though she didn't expect much, she had to try it. She laid a hand on his head and began singing.
"Wee ki ra murfan near en crushue. Wee ki ra selena sarla sos yor."
Unlike earlier, this time the song summoned a floating girl with a lyre, who strummed it to release a shower of blue particles that fell upon the boy, healing his wounds. Before long, he stirred. Feeling suddenly shy of being discovered, Aurica leapt to her feet and bolted.
When she got back to the crash site, she found Radolf and a few of the other knights there, checking out the crash. Radolf heard her approach and turned to face her.
"Aurica!" he exclaimed.
"Ah… Cardinal Radolf," Aurica said.
Radolf approached her.
"I was looking everywhere for you," he said. "Where have you been?"
"Um… I'm sorry," Aurica said, ignoring the actual question.
"Never mind," Radolf said. "I'm just glad I found you."
Aurica sighed, turning away from him.
"So? What have you been doing?" Radolf asked.
"Ah, um… nothing much really," Aurica said.
She turned back to face him.
"We haven't discovered anything special at this crash site," Radolf said. "So let's go back to Karulu village."
He turned to the other church knights and reyvateils that had gathered there.
"Our missionary work is done!" he announced. "We'll return to the village, and head back to the church tomorrow morning. Oracles, remember to treat your reyvateil partners well. They've sung a lot for us again. They must be really tired."
Aurica tuned out the banter that followed amongst some of the knights.
"You'll have plenty of time to talk on the way home," Radolf said. "Now please, let's go."
The knights headed off, and Radolf made to follow them, but Aurica didn't move.
"Hey, Cardinal…"
Radolf stopped as she addressed him, turning to face her, and she hurried to catch up.
"What is it, Aurica?" he asked.
"When… when will I get a partner?" she asked.
"Well… actually, that is up to Bishop Falss to decide," Radolf said. "I can't help you with that… but don't worry. I'm sure you'll be assigned one soon."
"I… sure hope so," Aurica said. "I've been waiting for such a long time… am I just not powerful enough to have a partner? Or… is it because even though I'm a reyvateil, I still can't craft any song magic?"
She'd managed to obtain another green magic not long after she first became a maiden, a song producing a blast of wind, but that was nearly three years ago now. She hadn't crafted a single song since then. Though Fayma had attempted to teach her a way to craft without diving, the song of flame she sought to create refused to materialize no matter what she tried.
"That's not it," Radolf said. "I'm sure Bishop Falss has a special plan for you. Come on, Aurica, you must be exhausted. Let us rest at the village. Fayma was worried about you too, you know."
"Yeah… okay," she said.
She headed back to the village with Radolf and the other knights, and they found Fayma waiting just outside the inn. She hugged Aurica the moment she saw her.
"Aurica! I was so worried!" she said. "Why did you go off by yourself like that?"
"Um… I'm sorry," Aurica said.
"Never do that again!" Fayma said. "I was so worried about you!"
"Yes… okay, I won't," Aurica said.
When Aurica woke up the next morning, she found only Fayma waiting for her in the inn lobby.
"Huh? Where are the others?" Aurica asked.
"One of the villagers asked them to help," Fayma said. "Apparently there was a Tenba executive bullying his reyvateil partner in the central square…"
"Oh," Aurica said. "Um… other than that, we're all ready to go, right?"
"Yes, you're the last one," Fayma said.
"Alright," Aurica said.
She headed out of the inn and made for the central square. She was too late to see the ruckus itself – the Tenba executive and reyvateil ran past her on her way there – but to her surprise, she did see the boy from the forest. Radolf and several other knights were there too, discussing the matter.
"Especially the way he was treating that reyvateil," Radolf said.
Then Radolf spotted Aurica approaching.
"Aurica… how much of that did you see? Did it frighten you?" he asked.
"No… not particularly," Aurica said. "I missed pretty much all of it…"
"Well, if you work for Tenba, those kinds of things are inevitable," Radolf said with a sigh. "But as long as I'm in charge of the church, you won't have to worry about a thing."
At that moment, the boy from the forest walked up to them.
"Hey, excuse me!" he said.
Aurica gasped as the boy dug out a familiar handkerchief from somewhere on his person, but with Radolf and the others here, she thought it would look bad if she bolted again. She hadn't even realized she'd dropped it…
"This is yours, right?" the boy said.
"Aurica… is that true?" Radolf asked.
"Oh, so your name is Aurica!" the boy said. "I'm Lyner. It's nice to meet you!"
"N-no, um… that isn't mine," Aurica said. "Um… who are you, anyway?"
"Hmm… so you don't know each other?" Radolf said.
"I… I don't know him at all," Aurica said.
"What?" Lyner said. "B-but…"
But Aurica didn't wait for him to finish speaking. She turned and left the square, rejoining the rest of the church reyvateils. The knights also followed her, though Radolf did pause to glance back at Lyner. They all boarded the airship that had brought them to the village, and before long it had risen up into the air on its way back to Nemo.
"Eumelia! It's been awhile!"
Ilya waved at her as she approached with a smile. She'd found him in Rocket Plaza, watching a street performance doing a variety of sleight-of-hand tricks.
"You too, Ilya," Eumelia said. "Still no contact from Espada, huh?"
"Yeah, I haven't seen hide nor hair of him since we parted three years ago," Ilya said. "I know he's been to Firefly Alley a few times, but we just never managed to run into each other somehow."
"I wonder if he's avoiding us," she said. "Though I can't imagine why… but then again, I still have no idea what happened to the three of them up there, so… for all I know, Sonnet might be dead…"
"Don't say that," Ilya scolded her. "Ah, hey, there's something else you might be interested in. Yesterday, I ran into Krusche!"
"Ohh!" Eumelia said. "So she came back, finally… well, I knew she would though. It's about the right time for that."
"So you were expecting that too, huh?" Ilya said. "It's almost like you can see the future…"
"Hmm… that might not be too far from the truth," Eumelia mused. "But on the other hand, I can't be confident in saying it is the truth, either…"
"So, what brings you here today?" Ilya asked. "Did you come just to socialize, or what?"
"No, this time I have a deeper motive," Eumelia said. "I'm gonna help Misha search again for a bit, and then… if things go as I expect, I'll be busting a man out of the brig at Tenba Labs."
"That sounds really dangerous," Ilya said. "But with your magic, I guess you'd probably be fine… and you said Misha's pretty strong too, right? I still wish you'd introduce me to her…"
"It's not like I've been hiding her from you or anything," Eumelia said. "Tell you what… why not come with me when I see Spica? With any luck, we might run into Misha there too."
"Eh… you want me to accompany you to Spica? Really?" Ilya said. "I thought you'd rather be alone with her…"
"I mean, I can be alone with her any number of times in the future," Eumelia said. "And it's not like she's gonna suddenly change her tune…"
"Right… how many times have you been rejected now?" Ilya asked.
"Um… I've lost count, to tell the truth," Eumelia said. "But… I guess I'd estimate it's on the ballpark of twenty to thirty times…"
"You're persistent, I'll give you that," Ilya said. "And Spica is pretty, so I can understand why you'd like her…"
"Well… even though I'm being persistent, I do understand that there's a possibility I don't even have a chance," Eumelia said. "Besides, she probably still just sees me as a kid… if I do stand a chance it probably won't be for at least ten more years…"
"And you have quite the nerve to keep trying knowing that," Ilya said.
"Well… it's not like she's ever said I was bugging her," Eumelia said. "With the way she always just laughs it off, I can't help thinking… maybe next time will be the time she agrees."
Ilya shrugged. "Well, alright," he said. "I'll come see Spica with you, and if we meet Misha, you can introduce me to her."
"Awesome!" Eumelia said. "I do slightly regret never getting the chance to introduce you two, actually."
So the two of them left Rocket Plaza and took the tram to Firefly Main Street, where Spica usually sold her kitty candy. Sure enough, she was there, hawking her wares like usual. Misha was nowhere in sight, however. Nevertheless, the two of them walked up to her.
"Good morning, Spica!" Eumelia said.
"Good morning, Spica!" Ilya said.
She turned to smile at them.
"Oh my, if it isn't little Eumelia," she said. "You've grown a bit since I last saw you, haven't you?"
"Maybe," Eumelia said. "I haven't exactly been tracking my height…"
"And Ilya's with you too, how unusual," Spica said. "I rarely see the two of you together…"
"That's because Ilya's thinking of me," Eumelia said. "After all, isn't it better if it's just the two of us, you and I?"
"Oh, you're such a tease, Eumelia," Spica said with a giggle. "We're in a public place, so it's hardly just the two of us!"
"Well, I guess you have a point," Eumelia said. "So… would you be interested in diving into this cute little girl today?"
"I really don't know what you see in me to keep asking that," Spica said. "Diving is such a… personal experience. I'm sure this old lady would just mess things up."
"Oh, don't be like that!" Eumelia retorted. "You're no old lady! You're more like a spry young fox!"
Spica giggled. "Why thank you, Eumelia," she said. "But compliments won't get me to change my mind."
"Damn, foiled!" Eumelia exclaimed, slapping a fist into her palm.
Ilya giggled, causing both of them to look at him.
"I'm sorry, this is just so funny to watch," he said. "I'm starting to regret trying to give you two some time alone when you meet…"
"My oh my, I'm glad to have shown you something amusing," Spica said. "Now then… would either of you like some of Firefly Alley's famous kitty candy? It's only twelve leaf per candy."
"Hmmm," Eumelia said. "You know what, I think I will have some today. Hmm… I think I'll take twenty for now."
"That'll be two hundred forty leaf," Spica said.
She counted out the candies while Eumelia counted out the cash, and then they exchanged them.
"By the way, have you seen Misha yet today?" Eumelia asked.
"Misha… no, she hasn't shown her face today," Spica said. "Why, were you looking for her?"
"Kinda," Eumelia said. "Ilya was complaining that I hadn't introduced him."
Spica giggled. "Well, I don't think Misha would be interested in a boy like Ilya," she said.
"Oh, I never expected she would be," Eumelia said. "She already has someone she likes, after all."
"Eh, now you tell me!?" Ilya gasped. "Although, that wasn't the only reason I wanted to meet her. She's a friend of a friend, so it's just weird that I've never met her!"
"Well, I'll apologize as many times as you want," Eumelia retorted. "It wasn't like I planned to keep her away from you or anything."
"Ah, speak of the devil," Spica said. "That's her over there, isn't it?"
Eumelia turned to look where Spica was pointing. Sure enough, Misha had just exited Caracola Avenue and was making her way through the crowds towards Spica.
"Oh wow, she's really pretty," Ilya gasped. "It's too bad she's taken… and she's a reyvateil too, right? That special type you mentioned… what was it again…?"
"A pureblooded beta-type," Eumelia said.
"Right… I haven't a clue what that means, but it sure sounds cool," Ilya said.
At that moment, the crowed parted, and Eumelia waved to Misha, who immediately caught sight of her and hurried forward. Eumelia stepped forward as well to meet her halfway, and Ilya followed a step or two behind.
"Eumelia!" Misha exclaimed. "This is a pleasant surprise! I wasn't expecting to see you today! And…"
Her eyes slid over to Ilya, and she blinked several times.
"Wait just one moment…!" she exclaimed. "Eumelia's with a boy!? Eumelia, the girl who proposes to Spica at every chance she gets… is with… a boy!?"
"Miiisha, that's an exaggeration!" Eumelia protested. "I haven't proposed yet, you know!"
"But saying it like that means you've been planning to one day!" Misha said.
"Not if she keeps rejecting me," Eumelia retorted. "Why would I move on to step four when I can't even get past step one?"
"Well, at least you have a solid head on your shoulders," Misha said. "So who's the lucky lad?"
"He's just a friend," Eumelia said. "Ilya, meet Misha. Misha, meet Ilya."
Misha looked at him appraisingly.
"Well, I mean… he is reasonably good-looking," she said. "But I bet he doesn't hold a candle to Lyner…"
"Let's not talk about Lyner at a time like this," Eumelia said. "You came to see Spica, right?"
"Oh, right!" Misha exclaimed. "Yes, I had some business with her."
She stepped past Ilya and Eumelia and approached Spica.
"Hello again, Spica!" she said.
"Good morning, Misha," Spica said with her signature smile. "Would you like some of Firefly Alley's famous kitty candy? It's only twelve leaf per candy."
"Who cares about the price!" Misha said enthusiastically. "I just want to eat a bucket's worth!"
Spica blinked, her face turning serious.
"How may I help you this time?" she asked. "Are you after crystals, or information?"
"Information!" Misha said. "I heard a rumour that one of the high-security labs has a window that could be a weak point for entry. Do you have any information on that?"
"Hmm," Spica said. "There are at least four or five lab complexes in Firefly Alley… do you know which one the rumour referred to?"
"I can't be certain, since it's just a rumour," Misha said. "But based on what I heard, I think it might refer to the Horned Owl Time lab. I haven't even been able to get close to that one, and no-one seems to know what they research there, so I thought maybe it could be where my lost item has been stashed…"
Spica nodded. "The Horned Owl Time lab… I believe there is indeed a window," she said. "But whether it's actually a weak point or not, I can't say for sure. It's always possible it just opens into a kitchen or something that doesn't have any access to sensitive files."
"Well, I'll just have to try it and see," Misha said. "How do I get to this window?"
"It's on the fourth floor," Spica said. "But the construction in that area is crooked enough that it probably wouldn't be that difficult to climb up… the problem is, it's in full view of a public street."
"Wait… if it's in full view, why is it just a rumour?" Misha asked. "Shouldn't everyone know about it?"
"It seems the slipshod construction renders it imperceptible from ground level," Spica said.
"So if you're down on the street, you can't even tell there's a window there," Misha mused. "That means… whoever saw it must've been in the building across the street, right? So they're probably some overseer or something on the Great Washing Machine…"
"I can agree that that's a logical guess," Spica said cautiously.
From her phrasing, Eumelia felt like the woman was trying to avoid implicating that she had actually heard it from a person of such description. It made sense – she needed to keep her informants private for their own safety.
"I see," Misha said. "Seems like it's definitely worth a shot… what do you think, Eumelia? Should we try it?"
Eumelia nodded. "Sure, why not," she said.
"But we'll have to go at night to avoid being seen," Misha said. "And we'll need enough tranquility for you to keep your magic going… but I'm sure we can get in that window. Thank you very much, Spica!"
"Always happy to help," Spica said. "Now, shall we discuss the payment?"
"Aww, so stingy," Misha said. "Well, how much'll it be this time?"
"I'll take twelve hundred leaf for the information," Spica said.
"Twelve hundred!?" Misha gasped. "That's higher than last time…"
"The price depends on the sensitivity of the information," Spica retorted. "Normally I would've taken your money before sharing anything, but, well… you're a longtime customer, so I made a special exception. I hope you don't intend to make me regret my choice."
Misha sighed. "Fine, fine, I'll pay up," she said.
She fished out some cash and handed it over. Spica counted it.
"Misha… you're one hundred and twenty leaf short," Spica said.
"S-seriously!?" Misha gasped. "I could've sworn I had two thousand… ah, but I did have a Huff-Puff Set for lunch yesterday…"
"Don't worry about it," Eumelia said. "I'll cover the difference for you this time, alright? But it's only on loan."
"Alright, thanks a bunch, Eumelia," Misha said. "I'll pay you back as soon as I can."
Eumelia counted out the missing amount and passed it to Spica, who beamed at them.
"Thank you for your business!" she said.
"Oh, and while you're in business mode, Spica, I actually had a question for you too," Eumelia said. "I've been trying to get my hands on a boltapolta, but none of the stores around here seem to sell them. Do you have any idea where I could find one?"
"A boltapolta, is it?" Spica said. "Hmm… there should definitely be some in the city, as they're a component in many of core systems keeping us afloat, but it's no surprise you couldn't find one – Tenba holds the sole right of distribution."
"Hmm… so does that mean I'll have to sneak into a warehouse somewhere?" Eumelia asked.
"That might work, but… I have a few connections I could follow," Spica said. "I believe I should be able to obtain one for you within a day or two."
"Perfect, thank you very much!" Eumelia said.
"So, now that that's dealt with, let's go have lunch, just the three of us!" Misha exclaimed. "Although I can't pay, for obvious reasons…"
Eumelia giggled. "It'll be my treat, then," she said. "Is that okay, Ilya?"
"Eh? Um… I guess," he said. "I could pay for my own though…"
"Don't worry about it," Eumelia said. "You know I have a lot of money because of my guardians' work, right?"
"Alright, fine," llya said.
As they walked off towards the Frying Room, Misha questioned her.
"Come to think of it, I don't think you ever mentioned what your guardians do," she said. "What line of work are they in?"
Eumelia glanced around to make sure no-one was listening, then lowered her voice.
"Um… I can't say much, but to put it simply, they're vigilantes," Eumelia said. "And much of their work involves stealing diquility and distributing it to the poor."
"Diquility… that was the stuff third-generation reyvateils need to take just to stay alive, right?" Misha said. "I heard it hurts even worse than a normal install…"
"Yeah, that's it," Eumelia said. "I haven't been subjected to that misfortune yet, but I'm almost fifteen, so it's only a matter of time now."
"Aww, I already feel sorry for you," Misha said. "Though I haven't installed yet either, unlike you…"
"Well, I can certainly confirm that installs hurt," Eumelia said. "Maybe that's why you usually get someone else to do it for you, instead of doing it yourself…"
"Yeah, I can't believe you went and installed in yourself," Misha said. "I don't think I could ever do that…"
"Well, I think we should drop this subject though," Eumelia said. "It looks like Ilya's getting a bit uncomfortable…"
"I'm sorry, I just don't like you talking about painful things so dispassionately," he said. "Can we talk about something else?"
"Sure," Misha said. "Got any suggestions?"
"Hmm… Eumelia, why don't we tell her about the time we met an apostle of Elemia?" Ilya suggested.
"W-what!?" Misha gasped. "Who was it…? It wasn't Lyner, right?"
"No, her name was Sonnet," Eumelia said. "Well… I don't mind talking about that, sure. Why not."
"Alright, now I'm getting a little excited," Misha said. "But let's at least place our orders first…"
They'd just arrived at the Frying Room Inn and Bar. The three of them headed inside and claimed an empty table, and the waitress came over to take their order. Once that was all dealt with, Misha looked expectantly at the two of them.
"Let me think," Eumelia said. "I guess it started when we heard a commotion in the back alleys near Rocket Plaza…"
Three days after returning from Karulu Village, Aurica was with Radolf and another knight on a shopping trip when they came across a commotion near the general store on Starry Avenue. Apparently, one of the tower guardian machines had suddenly appeared and started attacking people. Radolf and the knight quickly stepped up to defend the citizens, but the machine proved to be too powerful for the two of them without their reyvateil partners. After bringing them to their knees, the machine turned on Aurica…
"N-no…!" Aurica gasped.
But that was when Lyner suddenly appeared, jumping between them. This time, he was accompanied by an unfamiliar man with a green hat and cape.
"Isn't this… ABR, one of the tower guardians!?" Lyner exclaimed. "Why is it attacking humans?"
"Does it really matter?" the guy in green asked. "It doesn't change what we gotta do!"
"Right!" Lyner said. "Jack, back me up!"
"Waaay ahead of you there," Jack retorted.
Lyner raised his sword to deflect a beam fired at him, then leapt forward and attacked the guardian. As he moved, Aurica felt a strange energy building up from inside her. Jack followed up on Lyner's attack by firing his gun at the guardian, and she felt that energy continue to build up until it overflowed. She gasped.
"W-what…? S-something strange just happened…" she said.
The energy seemed to flow from her into the man and boy fighting in front of her.
"Huh!?" Lyner said. "This is… harmonics! You're a reyvateil!?"
When Aurica didn't respond, he continued speaking, somehow managing to hold a conversation even while in the midst of dodging and blocking the machine's attacks.
"Look, I need your help," he said.
"But… I'm useless," Aurica said.
"Don't worry," Lyner said. "I only need you to sing."
"I'm a class D reyvateil," Aurica said. "I can't sing that many songs."
"Class…?" Lyner said. "It… it doesn't matter! Just sing the way you normally do!"
"N-no, I, uh… I don't… know what do to," Aurica said, starting to panic a little. "W-what should I do?"
"What?" Lyner said. "It doesn't matter… just sing something… powerful."
"W-which song should I sing?" Aurica asked. "Please pick one… b-but I only know Boom or Life Warmth."
She didn't bother to list her two green magic songs, since they wouldn't be useful in this kind of situation. Killing something with green magic would be equivalent to fighting with a sewing needle as your only weapon – technically possible, but extremely inefficient. You could keep up a constant stream of attacks without break, but each individual attack was relatively weak. It would be one thing if you were trying to break down a wall – the stress from the constant barrage would eventually cause it to crumble. But that was only possible because the wall was immobile – against a person, that was not a winning strategy.
"Is Life Warmth a healing blue magic?" Lyner said. "That'll be perfect… please sing that!"
"O-okay, I'll start singing," Aurica said. "But don't be surprised if it's not very effective…"
With that, she closed her eyes, muttering a little prayer to herself before she began.
"Please… lend me power…"
Then she began to sing.
"Wee ki ra murfan near en crushue. Wee ki ra selena sarla sos yor."
As before, that floating girl with the lyre appeared, strumming to produce a shower of blue healing particles.
"Thanks!" Lyner said. "This'll be real helpful! Jack, let's go! This should be a piece of cake now!"
While she sang, Jack and Lyner proceeded to attack the guardian while doing their best to weather its attacks. However, it wasn't long before she felt her energy waning. Without stopping her song, she managed to work in some words between phrases of the music.
"I think… I'm getting a little tired!"
"Don't worry, this shouldn't last much longer!" Lyner said.
Several seconds later, she ran out of energy and stopped singing, and that floating girl disappeared in a shower of glowing particles.
"No um… I can't… do this anymore!" Aurica said.
"Don't worry!" Lyner said. "Just rest for a moment. Once you're feeling better, you can start singing again, but next time, use a red magic."
"A-alright," Aurica said.
As the two of them continued to attack the guardian, she soon found the strength to start singing again, this time the most basic red magic that she knew from the moment she awakened as a reyvateil.
"Fou paks ga heighte jenge!"
It somehow felt a little easier to sing than before. She let it build up until suddenly the power seemed to shift into a higher gear.
"Alright!" Lyner said. "Now's the time to unleash it!"
She drew the song to its conclusion and stopped singing. The ball of symphonic energy she'd built up struck the guardian and knocked it away, lightning crackling across its surface as it short-circuited. Lyner followed up her attack with one of his own, causing even more lightning. Then its anti-grav device must have given out, for it landed on the street with a crash, now lifeless.
Around them, people were starting to speculate about how Lyner might be an apostle of Elemia, but Aurica just tried to shrink down to avoid the attention.
"Geez!" Jack said. "Hey Lyner, dial it down a bit! You're showing off too much! People are starting to figure out who you are!"
"I couldn't help it!" Lyner said. "Those people needed my help!"
"Alright, I warned you twice," Jack said. "If something happens now, it's all your fault."
Lyner turned to Aurica.
"We couldn't've done it without you," he said. "Thank you."
"B-but… I didn't really do anything," Aurica said. "I don't want to cause any trouble…"
"What? You didn't cause any trouble," Lyner said. "In fact, we were only able to win because you helped us. I thought I'd have to fight it by myself, so… I really owe you one."
At that moment Radolf got to his feet.
"Thanks to you, we avoided a disaster," he said. "If I remember correctly, your name is Lyner, right? We met in Karulu."
"Huh? You know them already?" Jack asked.
"Well, yes… I met them both once before, in Karulu," Lyner said.
"We can't thank you enough," Radolf said. "You saved Aurica's life, and that of all the people here. If you're not too busy, will you please stop by our church? I'm not trying to abduct you or anything… I just want you to meet someone, and to repay you."
"Okay," Lyner said. "I'll try to stop by later."
With that, Radolf turned to leave. Aurica and the other knight followed him, but she paused to glance back at him for a moment before hurrying onwards. When they got back to the church, Fayma was waiting for them again.
"Aurica… is it true you were attacked by the tower guardian?" she asked.
"Y-yeah," Aurica said. "But it worked out… somehow…"
"Someone managed to defeat the guardian," Radolf said. "It was that boy I mentioned earlier, from Karulu. Aurica even helped… she was able to properly sing for the first time."
"Oh my," Fayma said. "That's really good news! But are you hurt at all…?"
"N-no, I'm fine," Aurica said. "Really… I'm really fine."
"Okay, if you're sure, then I'll leave it at that for now," Fayma said. "I'm going to get some lunch. Do either of you want something?"
"No… I'm not really hungry," Aurica said.
"Yes, please," Radolf said.
With that said, Fayma left the church, and Aurica found a place to sit while she waited for Lyner. She wasn't even sure why she was waiting for Lyner. No, of course, it was because Radolf had invited him. It didn't really have anything to do with her. In fact, it probably wouldn't even matter if she stayed, but… somehow, she wanted to see him again.
While she waited, Radolf spoke to one of the other knights on duty.
"Is Bishop Falss around?" he asked.
"I'm sorry," the knight replied. "He's not in right now."
"I see," Radolf said. "Do you know when he'll be back?"
"He should be back by tomorrow," the knight replied.
"Okay, thank you," Radolf said.
Jack and Lyner showed up a few minutes later, and Radolf turned to greet them.
"Thank you for coming, but I'm sorry," he said. "The man I wanted you to meet won't be back until tomorrow."
"Alright," Lyner said. "So… what is this place?"
"Oh, I haven't told you anything about it, have I?" Radolf said. "This is the Church of Elemia, where our ancient goddesses, the Trio of Elemia, are enshrined."
"The Trio of Elemia?" Lyner said. "I've never heard of them."
"I'm not surprised," Radolf said. "The trio aren't very well-known among the Apostles of Elemia. Through their singing, the trio healed people, rejuvenated their lives, and enhanced human technology. Rumour has it that the three goddesses came from a time when people lived on the land and not in the clouds. The goal of our church is to revive the goddesses and restore their former glory."
"Oh, I see," Lyner said.
"That said, reviving them isn't our primary purpose," Radolf said. "Our true mission is to create a world as peaceful as that era."
"That's a great idea," Lyner said.
"Ah, I'm sorry to have kept you," Radolf said. "Since you came here for nothing, please let me arrange a place for you to stay tonight. Tomorrow I'll send someone over to pick you up. I'll see you then. Aurica?"
Aurica looked up with a start as she was addressed.
"Y-yes!" she said.
"Would you mind escorting Lyner and his friend to the Singing Moon Inn?"
"Ah… sure," Aurica said.
She got to her feet and joined the two of them as they left the church, heading towards the Singing Moon Inn. The three of them walked in silence until they passed the general store on Starry Avenue, at which time Jack decided to speak up.
"Does anyone else feel the gloominess in the air?" he asked.
"I don't feel anything," Lyner said.
"It's probably just me," Jack said.
Aurica sighed. It was obvious that he was referring to her. She must have been brooding. She took a few steps away from the two of them.
"Huh? Aurica, what is it?" Lyner asked.
"Um… I think I'm making him feel uneasy," Aurica said.
"Huh?" Lyner said. "What are you talking about?"
"Um… so, the Singing Moon Inn is a bit further down here," Aurica said. "You can't miss it. I'll wait for you guys there. Why don't you take some time to look around the city? It would be a lot more fun if you didn't have to worry about me… so once you've gotten to enjoy the city, meet me at the inn and I'll help you check in."
Without waiting for a response, she hurried on ahead.
"Aurica! Wait!" Lyner called.
But she ignored him and rounded a bend, soon arriving at the Singing Moon Inn. There she found the inn's cat, Puffball, and settled down to play with it as she waited. She hadn't been waiting even an hour when Lyner and his friend finally arrived, so she gently set the cat aside and got to her feet.
"Um… are you ready?" she asked.
"Yes," Lyner said.
She approached the counter to speak with the innkeeper.
"Um, excuse me?" she said. "I need a room for two…"
"Are you a church official?" the innkeeper asked. "Because I can give you a discount if so."
"Oh, yes, thank you," Aurica said.
She turned to the two of them.
"Okay, I got you a room," she said. "Someone should come and get you tomorrow. Get some rest, guys."
"Don't worry, we will," Lyner said.
"Good night," Aurica said.
She turned to leave, but Lyner stopped her as she got to the stairs.
"Oh, wait!"
She turned to face him.
"What is it?"
"Oh… well… thank you," Lyner said.
"You're welcome…?"
With that, she turned and left the inn.
Eumelia had been in Firefly Alley for about three days before things started to happen. She was with Misha, scouting for doors they might have missed, when they overheard some of the guards talking about Bourd bringing in a guy in white armour. Misha marched right up to one of them to confirm it, Eumelia holding back and maintaining her stealth magic, since unlike Misha she didn't have the authorization to be here.
"Hey, is that true?" she asked. "Did Bourd really capture some guy in white armour?"
"I don't know the details," the guard said. "But that's what I heard."
Misha rejoined Eumelia, looking thoughtful.
"White armour," she mused. "It could describe the knights of that weird church, but… why would Bourd capture a church knight? And… the Knights of Elemia also wear white…"
"So I guess we're gonna check it out, right?" Eumelia said.
Misha nodded. "Yeah, of course," she said.
With Eumelia following her, Misha headed upstairs and followed the corridor there. As they reached an intersection, Misha spotted Bourd with a pair of Tenba security guards, and quickly hurried across to hide herself behind the corner. Eumelia also helped out by grabbing her hand and singing her stealth song again.
Bourd was chuckling. "The legendary apostle of Elemia," he said. "If we can put him to good use, we'll have a bright future ahead of us. Guard the third cell carefully. I'll interrogate him tomorrow."
"Yessir!" one of the guards said.
"I'll work him to the bone!" Bourd said.
"The third cell, huh?" Misha mused. "Say, Eumelia, I know I must've said this a thousand times by now, but that magic of yours really is useful, isn't it?"
"I know, right?" Eumelia said. "I really like it too. So are we going to the cells then?"
"Of course!" Misha said. "They said he's an Apostle of Elemia, so he must be from Platina, which means he's probably someone I know…"
"Like Lyner?" Eumelia said.
"Well… it's not likely, but maybe!"
The two of them continued down the corridor to the cells, skipping past the first two and arriving at the third.
"So this is the third cell," Misha said.
They peered through the thick, tinted glass. Sure enough, there was a boy there in white armour. Misha banged on the glass.
"Hey! Lyner, is that you?"
The boy inside moved closer to the glass, and Misha gasped.
"Oh goddess, it really is you! Just wait a moment! I'll get you out of there!"
She made for the door and, after a little fiddling with the control panel, she overrode the lock to open the door, stepping inside without hesitation.
"Lyner!"
"Huh!?" Lyner said.
"That's you, right?" Misha said. "Lyner!"
"Huh? What?" Lyner said.
"What are you doing here, though?" Misha asked. "Why aren't you in Platina? And your armour… you look like a Knight of Elemia! What's going on?"
"Umm…"
"What's wrong?" Misha asked.
"Sorry, but… who are you?" Lyner asked.
"Huh…?"
"Well, uh, how do you know my name?" Lyner asked. "Have we met before?"
As Misha stared at him, he let out a nervous laugh.
"…Don't you remember me?" Misha asked.
"Umm… well… no," Lyner said. "I'm sorry. I don't remember."
Misha stared at him a bit longer, then sighed.
"I'm Misha," she said. "Misha Arsellec Lune."
"Misha?" Lyner said. "That's a cute name."
"You really forgot me…?" Misha said.
"Um, well…" Lyner said with another nervous laugh. "I'm sorry…"
At that moment, one of the guards from earlier showed up. He ignored Eumelia, who was watching from outside, and stepped into the cell behind Misha.
"Hey!" he said. "What are you doing!?"
Lyner leapt forward with a yell, drawing his sword and knocking the man down in a single fluid motion. The poor guy never stood a chance. At that point, Eumelia stepped forward.
"So you're Lyner, huh?" she said. "Misha has told me a lot about you. I'm Eumelia. Nice to meet you!"
"Ah, nice to meet you," Lyner said.
"There's no time to talk!" Misha said. "They've found us… we have to run before this guard wakes up!"
"Alright!" Lyner said.
The three of them headed down the corridor, but as they reached the corner, they heard voices.
"We'd better hide!" Misha hissed. "Eumelia, please do your thing!"
"It doesn't sound like they're coming though," Eumelia whispered. "Let's just listen for a minute…"
"What's Eumelia's thing…?" Lyner asked.
"Never mind that," Eumelia said. "Let's hear what they're saying…"
One of the guards was lamenting how boring guard duty was.
"Yeah," another one said. "I kinda wish someone would just run by, trying to escape…"
"This… doesn't look good," Lyner muttered.
"But we can't let them see us," Misha said. "Let's just wait for now… maybe if we're lucky, they'll go away soon."
"Say, have you dived recently?" one guard said.
"Huh? No, I haven't," a second one said.
"You better not put it off too long or the boss'll get mad," the third one said.
"Yeah, I know," the second guard said. "But my reyvateil's cosmosphere is just too crazy…"
"Ah man, that sucks," the first guard said.
"Yes it does," the second guard said. "Last time I had to do some ridiculous dance, just to craft some magic!"
"Whoa, whoa, wait," the third guard said. "I thought you're not supposed to talk about your partner's cosmosphere to anyone…"
"It doesn't matter," the second guard said. "She can't even craft any decent songs…"
"Sounds like your reyvateil is really stressed out," the first guard said. "Once she becomes useless, just ask your sergeant for a new one."
"Oh yeah," the second guard said. "I should probably do that…"
Lyner gasped and leapt out from around the corner. Misha, startled, followed him. Eumelia however remained where she was.
"What are you doing?" Misha asked.
"Hey, you guys!" Lyner shouted.
"Who the hell are you!?" the first guard said.
"A reyvateil isn't a tool!" Lyner said. "You can't just do anything you want to her!"
"You!" the third guard said. "I saw Bourd drag you in… you must've escaped!"
"I can't believe it!" Misha groaned. "He's such a stupid fool!"
"I'm sorry!" Lyner said. "I just couldn't stand listening to them anymore. I had to do something…"
"I see," Misha said. "So, you haven't changed much."
"You can't escape from us," the first guard said.
"Just surrender now," the second one said.
"Looks like we have to fight," Lyner said.
"Do you really think you can beat all of us?" the first guard said. "What a confident little punk."
"Hey, don't forget about me!" Misha said.
"Misha, no!" Lyner said. "I can't let a little girl fight!"
"Did you also forget that I'm a reyvateil?" Misha retorted.
"…What?" Lyner said.
"A reyvateil!?" the first guard gasped.
"If she sings… we could be in serious trouble!" the second guard said. "Hurry up and capture her!"
"That checks out!" Misha said gleefully. "Let me tell you something before we beat you all up… it's not the reyvateil's fault if she can't craft decent song magic for you! It's your fault for not treating her with love and respect! And, I'll prove it to you now!"
"Huh?" the first guard said. "How dare you lecture us! You're just a reyvateil!"
"I was getting bored, anyway," the second guard said. "This could be fun!"
The guard aimed his gun carefully at the ceiling, apparently intending for it to ricochet and strike Misha.
"Lyner, watch out!" Misha said. "That guy is trying to attack me!"
"What!?" Lyner gasped. "Cheating bastard…"
"Lyner! You have to protect me with your body and soul!" Misha said.
"You can count on me!" Lyner said.
"Wee ki ra hymme elle fane mea en omnis near. Wee ki ra wazx flip heighte en crushue near."
As Misha began to sing, he took a step back and raised his sword just as the man fired. The bullet ricocheted off the blade of the sword and struck Lyner's arm, but Misha's healing magic fixed it up almost immediately. Then Lyner leapt forward to attack the guards.
"Fou paks ga fountaina sii mea dea clare fusya."
That was when Eumelia decided to join the fight. She sang her stealth song, then snuck past the fight to reach the guard in the back. She snaked an arm around his neck as she stopped singing, startling everyone.
"W-whoa!" Lyner asked. "How did you do that!?"
"Focus on your own fight!" Eumelia retorted.
"T-there's another one…!" the unfortunate guard said. "Ack!"
Eumelia strangled him until he lost consciousness. During that time, Lyner managed to defeat the other two.
"Whoa, that was amazing, Eumelia!" Lyner said. "How did you do that? Was it teleportation?"
"No, it was invisibility," Eumelia said.
"So you can make yourself invisible," Lyner said. "That's pretty cool."
"It is, isn't it?" Misha said. "That's her thing that I mentioned earlier."
"Ah, so that's what it was," Lyner said.
"Plus I just had to make you eat your words about letting a little girl fight," Eumelia said. "Don't judge people by their gender!"
"You're right, I'm sorry," Lyner said. "You may be a girl, but you're pretty strong."
"As long as you understand," Eumelia said.
"So, you ready to get out of here?" Misha said.
Misha stepped up to him, looking like she was about to hug him, but he backed away before she could
"Uh, Misha…"
"You really forgot everything about me," Misha said. "But, I haven't forgotten anything about you!"
"Uh… right," Lyner said.
"Shame on you, Lyner," Misha said.
"Uhh…"
"It's okay, I can't really blame you," Misha said. "I'm just shocked. But come on… let's hurry."
"Why do you sound so sarcastic…?" Lyner asked.
"If you two are finished your lovers' quarrel, we do happen to be in the middle of the enemy base here," Eumelia retorted. "I can't just make us invisible and whisk out of here – the magic won't last long enough to get clear. So let's hurry and hope we don't run into anyone else."
They continued following the corridor, crossing the fork where they'd recently seen Bourd and coming to the door at the far end. Unfortunately, Bourd must have locked it when he left the area.
"Ugh, I can't get this door open," Lyner said.
"Let me see it," Misha said.
She examined the lock closely.
"Oh… this is just a simple rotary lock," she said. "I can open this easily."
As she got to work on it, Lyner brought up something else he had on his mind.
"Oh, hey, I heard them talking about a dive earlier," he said. "A dive is that thing where someone goes into the inner world of a reyvateil, right?"
"Yes, you can craft magic by entering our soulspace," Misha said. "We call it a cosmosphere."
"But, don't you need to have a good, solid relationship with a reyvateil in order to dive?" Lyner asked.
"It helps," Misha said. "But the people around here lack common sense and morals. They think of reyvateils as tools to be used by humans. A reyvateil's not allowed to deny anyone who asks to dive. Even if she hates the guy, she has to let him dive. It's an order."
"I'm really glad I don't work here," Eumelia muttered. "If one of those bastards tried to dive into me, I'm sure I'd give him an instant critical down…"
"Huh? You're also a reyvateil, Eumelia?" Lyner asked.
"What? The stealth magic didn't clue you in?" Eumelia asked.
"Well, I've never heard of a reyvateil who can use stealth magic to begin with," Lyner said.
"But have you heard of anyone else who can use magic besides reyvateils?" Eumelia retorted.
"Well… there's the teru," Lyner said.
"Who have very obvious horns, and even a tail," Eumelia said. "Do I look like a teru to you?"
"Well… no, of course not," Lyner said. "But what's a critical down?"
"That's what happens when the reyvateil rejects the diver," Eumelia said. "In extreme cases, the diver could even die, though usually the dive machine pulls them out before it gets that bad."
"You'd probably get in trouble if someone died from diving into you, Eumelia," Misha said. "They can't legally charge you, but… they can certainly punish you."
"This place is horrible," Lyner said. "So reyvateils don't have any civil rights… Misha, were you forced to put up with this too?"
"No, I'm okay," Misha said. "I just refuse to let them dive. I think they treat me better because I'm a rare type around here. But I'll let you dive… if you want."
"What!?" Lyner gasped.
"Oh, I got it open!" Misha said. "Let's go!"
They headed through the door, but Misha stopped them just before they reached the stairs. There was a door on the left there.
"Oh, Lyner, wait a minute!" Misha said.
"What's wrong?" Lyner asked.
"Can I stop by this room first?" Misha asked. "You don't mind, do you?"
They entered the room in question, and Misha rummaged through a chest in the corner that appeared to be filled with documents. After a moment, she straightened up, holding up a recipe card.
"I found it!" she said.
"Huh?" Lyner said. "Hey… isn't that a grathmeld recipe card?"
"Oh, you know about grathmelding?" Misha asked.
"Yeah," Lyner said. "I learned how to do it my first day on the Wings of Horus."
"Really!?" Misha gasped. "So, you can make this?"
"Well, yeah," Lyner said. "What is it, anyway?"
"It's a recipe for an item called tranquility," Misha said. "This item can be a real source of life for a reyvateil. It restores our energy so we can keep singing longer, so it'll be really useful in battle."
Lyner took the card and looked it over.
"Alright," he said. "I'll make it tonight."
When Misha didn't respond, just staring at him, he raised an eyebrow.
"What's wrong now?" he asked.
"Nothing," Misha said. "You're just… really kind, Lyner."
"If you say so," Lyner said.
Eumelia peered inside a bag next to the chest of documents.
"Looks like this bag contains some song stones," Eumelia said. "You'll need those to make tranquility, right?"
"Ah… yes, looks like it," Lyner said.
"They seem to be almost out, but whatever, let's just grab the whole lot," Eumelia said. "I'm sure they have a huge stash somewhere else anyway, so they won't miss these few. Also, there's a vending machine just outside this room – if we're expecting some fighting, I think we should buy a replica horn or two and some megamilks, just to be on the safe side. Maybe a healy C or two if you have enough money. Oh, and I have a few tranquility on me right now, so we can use those if they're needed on the way out of here."
"I only have about two thousand leaf, is that enough?" Lyner asked. "I also have three healy C left from when I was practicing grathmelding."
"That should be plenty… so let's get three replica horns and about six megamilks," Eumelia said. "And three more healy C should round it off nicely. You should have enough for all of that."
"Alright!" Lyner said.
They left the room and located the vending machine at the top of the stairs. Lyner purchased all the requested items, and then they descended the stairs.
"Which way from here?" Lyner asked.
"Keep going until the corridor bends to the right," Misha said.
They did as she said, taking down another squad of guards along the way, but then found themselves in front of another locked door.
"It's another dead end," Lyner said.
"Let me handle this," Misha said.
She examined the lock again.
"Ah, this one's a little trickier," she said. "It needs a pressure key… but I think I can open it."
After examining the door more closely, she continued.
"Ah, I found it," she said. "This pipe connects directly to the pressure valve… the people who live here sure use interesting technology."
"Really?" Lyner said.
"You know how people in Platina use technology even though they don't know how it works?" Misha said. "Well, down here the people had to create their own technology, so they understand how all of it works. So in a way, the civilization down here is more advanced than in Platina…"
"Don't look down on us lower worlders!" Eumelia said, grinning. "We're resourceful people!"
"Right, because at least you guys know how your own technology works!" Misha said.
"Well, some of us do," Eumelia said. "I'm not one of them… I mean, I do know some stuff about it, but it's mostly more abstract knowledge…"
"Fair enough," Misha said. "Great… the pressure is going down. Let's go."
The door opened onto a catwalk with railings along both sides – the place where Misha and Eumelia had first met. Misha took the right path without hesitation, leading them around the bend and along the long catwalk, passing by several forks without pause. But as they passed by a flight of stairs heading downwards, Lyner stopped.
"Hey, uh, Misha," he said. "And Eumelia too."
"What is it?" Misha asked, stopping and turning back to face him.
"I didn't get a chance to ask you before, but what were you two doing here?"
"I just came to see Misha and lend her a hand, because we're friends," Eumelia said.
"Well… Tenba took something important from me," Misha said. "So… I'm trying to get it back."
"Huh? Why didn't you tell me about it before?" Lyner asked. "I'll help you look for it."
"No, it's too late," Misha said. "I've looked everywhere, but I couldn't find it."
"I helped her look as well," Eumelia said. "We really couldn't find any sign of it… though I think it might be behind one of the high-security doors that we can't get through."
"Hey Lyner, what's going on in the upper world, anyway?" Misha asked.
"The upper world?" Lyner said. "Oh, in Platina?"
"Yes," Misha said. "How are things there?"
"Well, honestly, we're facing a serious threat," Lyner said.
"Really!?" Misha gasped.
"Yes," Lyner said. "A new virus emerged and is causing a lot of trouble. We have to beat it."
"So, you're here because of a virus?" Misha said.
"Yeah, something like that," Lyner said.
"Sounds serious," Misha said. "I guess I should've gone back instead of coming here to look for it… but either way…"
"Uh… Misha…?" Lyner said.
"Ah, never mind," Misha said. "Let's go."
But before they could make another move, there was an explosion below them, and the whole complex shook.
"Huh!?" Lyner gasped. "What's going on!?"
"That's no ordinary quake," Misha said. "It felt like it came from below… an explosion!? We better get out of here! This place is too dangerous!"
"Wait!" Lyner said. "I've got a bad feeling about this…"
"This time I agree with Lyner," Eumelia said. "I think it's actually more dangerous to ignore this… isn't that where the power generator is?"
"Ah… you might be right," Misha said reluctantly. "But did you forget we're trying to escape…?"
"But we have to check it out!" Lyner said.
Without waiting for any further argument, he descended the stairs in a single bound.
"Lyner!" Misha called down. "Are you outta your mind!? You're going to get us killed!"
"But if the power generator gives out, this entire complex could fall and nowhere will be safe," Eumelia said. "Pretty hard to escape if the whole place falls, right? We'd end up in the Sea of Death and that would be the end… even my birds probably wouldn't be enough to save us then… and I have other friends here as well, like Spica and Ilya."
"Ugh… you do have a point," Misha admitted. "Fine… let's go."
The two of them hurried down the stairs, rejoining Lyner as he headed down the corridor towards the source of the explosion. They soon emerged into a room filled with all sorts of strange machinery. In the centre of the room was a gigantic mechanical monstrosity that seemed to be rampaging about, and next to it was a strange horned creature. There were several people running around and doing things, perhaps trying to get the machine under control. A couple people even ran right past the three of them without a second glance, so engrossed they were in the emergency situation. But one red-haired girl just stood there motionless, watching the chaos. From the visions Eumelia had received recently, she was sure that girl was Krusche, who had given the Carillon Organito to Ilya six years ago.
"Over there!" Lyner said.
"Hey… what's she doing?" Misha asked.
Suddenly the strange creature roared, and some sort of energy flowed into the mechanical monster. That seemed to make the thing even more unstable, causing it to produce puffs of smoke from all over as it moved.
"Maybe she can't get away?" Lyner said. "Let's find out!"
He darted forward towards Krusche.
"Hey, are you okay?" he asked.
"Huh? Who are you guys?" Krusche asked, startled.
"We're here to help you," Misha said.
"Oh, don't worry about me," Krusche said. "I'm fine. But we have to stop that machine! If it keeps going like this, it'll destroy the Symphonic Power Generator! Then, this island'll fall for sure!"
"Wow, you were right, Eumelia!" Misha gasped.
"The island!?" Lyner gasped. "It's going to fall?"
"Oh, I forgot you don't know about this place," Misha said. "This whole island is man-made. It can't float without the Symphonic Power Generator."
"You can think of it as something like a gigantic airship with a city built on top," Eumelia added.
"So it's true," Misha said. "If that's destroyed, the whole island will fall!"
"There are actually four symphonic power generators keeping the place in the air," Eumelia said. "But I don't think the other three are enough to keep the city afloat for any extended period, so yeah, it'll probably fall if this one is destroyed. Best-case scenario would be for the bridges to give way so that only this quarter falls and the other three are spared, but that's still pretty bad."
"Then we can't let that happen!" Lyner said.
"Say, Misha, let's sing together this time!" Eumelia said. "If it's you and me… maybe we can even produce a synchronity chain!"
"A what…?" Misha said.
"Don't worry about it and just sing, and I'll match you!" Eumelia said. "Well, I doubt we could actually get a synchronity chain on our first time, but… it can't hurt to try! Even if we don't get one, the resonance between our voices should boost the magic's power at least a little."
"Well… alright," Misha said. "Shall I sing blue magic or red magic?"
"Let's start with some blue magic," Lyner said. "Once we have good harmonics going, you can take a short break and switch to red magic."
"Got it!" Misha said.
"Wee ki ra hymme elle fane mea en omnis near. Wee ki ra wazx flip heighte en crushue near."
She and Eumelia began singing together, Eumelia mimicking Misha's words and melody. At the same time, Lyner and Krusche began attacking the massive mech. The mech attacked with a variety of missiles, occasionally leaping into the air to try and crush the party, but Eumelia didn't pay attention to the details of the battle, because she was too busy singing. When she sensed they were about to run out of energy, she took out two of the tranquility crystals she had, handing one of them to Misha and reaching back to insert the other into the install port on the back of her neck. Misha slipped hers under her shirt, as her install port was on her chest. Unlike installing a grathnode crystal, the tranquility flowed in without any pain whatsoever. With that, they were able to keep up the healing song until the harmonics reached their maximum strength, boosting the attack strength of Lyner and Krusche on the front line.
When they finally ran out of energy, the two of them stopped singing and gasped for breath a little. Song energy replenished quickly however, and after a few seconds Misha started to sing the basic red magic that all reyvateils knew, and Eumelia also joined in. It seemed that her dream of attaining a synchronity chain was not to come true, however. As they were about to run out of energy, Misha unleashed all the built-up energy at the mech, and the upper portion of it burst open from the stress, spilling its internal parts all over the floor. With the upper portion wrecked, the legs also stopped moving, and the mech effectively became lifeless.
With the mech out of commission, the other monster that seemed to have been controlling it vanished in a swirl of shadows. Krusche let out a sigh of relief.
"We barely made it," she said.
"So, who are you?" Lyner asked, turning to face her.
The girl didn't answer, instead turning towards the sounds of approaching footsteps.
"Blast! Tenba's guards are coming!" she exclaimed. "We gotta go!"
With that, she ran back they way they'd come from.
"Hey, you!" Misha called after her, to no avail.
Eumelia began to sing her song of stealth, concealing only herself from the guards. She then headed back down the corridor a bit, where the approaching guards wouldn't see her but Misha and Lyner easily would. Once she was sure she was out of sight, she stopped singing again.
And it wasn't a moment too soon, for just as she started singing, several people stepped in from the other entrance to the room on the left wall. It was Bourd and two Tenba security guards.
"Not bad," Bourd said.
Eumelia peeked back into the room and saw him grinning at the two of them.
"I would expect nothing less from an apostle of Elemia," he continued.
"Bourd!" Lyner gasped.
"I'm telling you, you really should join us," Bourd said. "You'd fit right in with Tenba."
"You can't always get what you want!" Misha said.
"Ah, Misha," Bourd said. "So you're the one who helped Lyner escape. Why must you always cause trouble…? Reyvateils are supposed to obey their human masters."
"I'll never obey you!" Misha shouted.
"How dare you raise your voice to me, you stupid, defective doll!" Bourd shouted.
"That's exactly why I'll never work for you, Bourd!" Lyner said.
"Looks like there's nothing I can do to convince you," Bourd said. "I should've just killed you when I had the chance!"
"He really has it in for you!" Misha said. "Lyner, we gotta run!"
They bolted back the way they came, and Eumelia joined them as they ran back towards the stairs. Just before the stairs, Misha paused to look back.
"They're not chasing us," she said.
"Somehow, I get the feeling that they haven't given up," Lyner said.
"This isn't normal," Misha said. "Which reminds me… that wolf-machine back there… you looked like you'd seen it before, Lyner. What's going on?"
"That was the virus that attacked Platina," Lyner said.
"What?" Misha said, startled.
"That thing appeared at the Altar of Apostles," Lyner said. "And so Platina… well…"
"Nothing good, I guess?" Misha said.
Lyner sighed. "Well, thinking about it won't be much help," he said. "What are we gonna do now?"
"First, we have to get out of here," Misha said. "Usually, we'd escape by taking an airship from the port…"
"Then, won't they be waiting for us there?" Lyner said.
"They never have before," Misha said.
"Okay, sounds like a plan," Lyner said.
"I have a feeling it's not gonna work, but it can't hurt to check," Eumelia said.
Misha led them up the stairs, taking them left down the catwalk. They passed by a trio of young kids playing tag, then headed up another flight of stairs into the town. Right at the top of the stairs was the stall selling cards.
"Huh… what is this place?" Lyner asked.
"We call it Firefly Alley," Misha said.
"Huh… so, does Tenba have a base here?" Lyner asked.
"Technically, they do," Misha said. "Tenba built this city, but ordinary working people live here too. Everything on this island was made by Tenba, even the island itself. The power generator where we were fighting just now is right below us. This city was built right on top of the generator. Isn't it amazing? I couldn't believe it, the first time I saw it. This is what people of the lower world are capable of. They have an insatiable hunger for knowledge. They strive for technological innovation. This land is for people who are constantly trying to improve their lives. They're completely opposite from the people of Platina."
"So this is the power of the people of the lower world," Lyner said.
"Come on," Misha said. "We better hurry."
"Wait a sec, let me look at this," Lyner said. "These cards are…?"
"Ohh, how great of you to come!" the old man watching the stall said. "Looking for some good cards?"
Lyner looked over the selection and frowned a bit.
"Huh? I thought they were grathmeld recipe cards, but… they're just collectibles?"
"Indeed!" the old man said. "Collect them all while you can!"
"Ah, um… maybe some other time," Lyner said. "We're kinda in a hurry…"
"Um, actually!" Eumelia said. "I'd like Ar Tonelicard 1, please!"
"I thought you already had that one, young lady!" the old man said.
"Well, you see… I lost it, so…"
"Very well, that will be one hundred leaf!" the old man said.
Eumelia handed over the money from her own pocket and received a card in exchange, which she stowed away in the same pocket. The trio then headed off to the right, towards Firefly Main Street.
"I didn't take you as the type to collect those cards, Eumelia," Misha said.
"Actually, I got this one for you, Misha," Eumelia said. "You see, these cards were created with grathmelding, which means they can be recrystallized. It's more expensive than getting the crystal from Spica, admittedly, but she doesn't often have it in stock, and a hundred leaf isn't that bad of a markup, so…"
"Huh… so what crystal is it?" Misha asked.
"It's an installable crystal that increases your resistance to grathnode," Eumelia said. "Which means your song drains a little less energy, and you can sing longer."
"Huh… okay, that is useful," Misha said. "Thanks, Eumelia. Though I hope you don't mind if a wait a little while before installing it…"
"That's fine," Eumelia said.
"I have no idea what you girls are talking about…" Lyner said.
"We can explain that later," Misha said. "Let's hurry to the port!"
She led them out into Firefly Main Street, which wasn't as crowded as usual since it was still fairly early in the day. Even Spica hadn't arrived yet to sell her kitty candies. Misha led them on without stopping, taking a flight of stairs up to the wharf, where they found a huge crowd around the ticket office. More ominously, there wasn't a single airship docked.
"Huh? What's going on here?" Misha asked.
"Isn't this normal?" Lyner asked.
"This place is usually busy, yes," Misha said. "But never quite like this… we'd better ask someone."
She stepped forward to question the nearest person, a man with a crimson cap.
"Excuse me, what's going on here?" she asked.
"What's going on!?" the man said. "They've cancelled all flights!"
"All flights!?" Misha gasped. "Cancelled?"
"I heard that the tower's guardian is attacking airships," the man said. "So it's too dangerous to fly."
"Oh… thank you," Misha said.
She returned to Lyner and Eumelia, who were still waiting by the stairs.
"So all flights have been cancelled," Misha said. "Hmm… Bourd must've known we'd come here. That's why he didn't chase us."
"That checks out," Eumelia agreed.
"Eumelia… can you get us out of here with your birds?" Misha asked.
"Even if I could summon enough to carry all three of us… we'd just be attacked by the tower guardian," Eumelia said. "But I can only summon a grand vulture. It would be able to carry two people for a short distance, but if we're aiming for the continent, or even just for the Falcon's Claw or the lower reaches of the tower, that load would be too much for it, so I'd need to summon three. Unfortunately, I can handle at most two of them at once, so even if the guardian wasn't there, it still wouldn't work… though without the guardian, I could've at least sent the two of you ahead and gotten Falc to come back for me…"
"Then we have no other choice," Misha said. "We have to take the dangerous route. And I was hoping to enjoy the flight…"
"So, what is this dangerous route?" Lyner asked.
"Remember the power generator?" Misha said. "We can follow a pipeline directly into the tower. Let's go back to the power generator… I'll explain more when we get there. Oh, but before that we should go shopping to make sure we're prepared for the trip… and if you want, we could rest at the inn."
Lyner shook his head. "Shopping is one thing, but there's no time to rest right now!" he said. "Bourd is after us… if we stay at an inn, won't he find us right away?"
As he said that, he started to approach the edge of the wharf.
"I think we should be fine, but… it's not impossible he'd find us," Misha said. "Huh? Hey Lyner, what are you doing…?"
"Ah, I just wanted to see the view for a moment," Lyner said.
He headed out onto the most narrow spur and shielded his eyes, perhaps trying to make out the shape of the tower in the distance.
"Huh?" Misha said. "No, wait! It's too dangerous! C-come back here!"
"What? I'm fine," Lyner said.
He turned and came back. "See? It's not that dangerous…"
"Geez!" Misha complained. "Don't scare me like that! Come on… I'll show you where the inn is."
"Huh? But I thought we weren't staying the night," Lyner said.
"The inn and the shop share the same building," Misha said. "So we can just buy anything we need there."
She led the way to the Frying Room Inn and Bar, and they spent a few minutes browsing the selection in the shop.
"Ah, you should both get one of these," Eumelia said, indicating one of the bins of grathnode crystals on display. "You do have a reyvaring, right Misha?"
"Huh? Yes, I do," Misha said. "I haven't enhanced it at all though…"
"Then you should definitely slot this one in," Eumelia said.
"Let me see," Lyner said, reading out the description. "Insert this crystal into any equipment slot to slowly heal your body over time… oh, that sounds useful! They're even pretty cheap, at just thirty leaf…"
"I mean, they're also a rank C, level one crystal," Eumelia said. "So the effect isn't that great… but it's still enough that it could save your life if you're in a pinch. Of course, there are higher-rank crystals available with similar effects – if we're lucky, we might be able to get the level 2 upgrade of this for around twenty times the price, which is still pretty affordable, but there's no guarantee she'll have it in stock, so I think we should get these ones either way."
"Then, we should get three of them!" Lyner said. "One for each of us."
Though Eumelia already had one of that exact crystal slotted into her own reyvaring, she also knew that they would most likely join up with Krusche later. So, instead of explaining the situation, she just nodded.
"Yes, three of them would be good," she said.
"Alright," Misha said. "See anything else we should buy?"
"Not really," Eumelia said. "Ah, wait, there's one other thing… let's look at the grathmeld recipe cards for a moment."
The three of them headed to the section of the store that sold cards, but it seemed that most of the cards were out of stock.
"What's going on?" Misha said. "Usually there are a lot more cards here…"
"Who knows," Eumelia said. "Probably something to do with the blockade… anyway, the one I was looking for was…"
She scanned the cards, her eyes falling on one of the few still in stock. In fact, there were quite a few of them – it seemed to be an unpopular recipe. However, it wasn't the card Eumelia had been looking for.
"Ah, they don't have the one I wanted," Eumelia said. "I was looking for polishing powder. Not very glamorous, sure, but it's a key ingredient in a bunch of other recipes, so you should definitely have it on hand just in case you need it. Maybe you can find it when you get to Nemo. That said… this card here does have its uses. On its own it can help someone recover if they're paralyzed, and it's also an ingredient for an item that can revive someone who passed out from their injuries."
"Okay," Lyner said. "We'll get one of these, then."
"Other than that, I think we should just order lunch to go," Eumelia said. "Let's get four Huff-Puff Sets as takeout."
"Wait, why four?" Misha asked. "Are you planning to invite Ilya or something?"
Though the fourth was intended for Krusche, she thought it might be a bad idea to say that outright, as the others had no way of knowing that Krusche would be taking the same route. She'd already thought of an alternate explanation, though.
"Nah, just think of it as insurance," Eumelia said. "In case we're more hungry than expected. After all, we're gonna be doing a lot of walking."
"I see," Misha said. "Though it's hard to imagine not being satisfied with a Huff-Puff Set… but whatever. I'm fine with that."
So they paid for the two crystals and the recipe card, then headed into the restaurant area. Misha scanned the room cautiously for a moment, then relaxed a little. The three of them stepped up to the counter, and Eumelia placed the order. A few minutes later, they had the four meal sets packaged up into a convenient paper bag and were on their way out the door.
While Eumelia was helping Lyner escaped from Firefly Alley, a girl with long black hair sat on top of a wagon travelling through Cello Forest, singing a little song to herself.
"Round and round the world we go, our destination no-one knows, yet howso might the journey flow, we'll always come back to Nemo!"
The man driving the wagon chuckled.
"Not bad, Jessamine," he said. "Are you that excited to be returning to Nemo?"
"But of course!" Jessamine exclaimed. "Nemo's full of incredible sights and sounds! I don't think I could ever grow tired of it!"
"Well, I can't deny you have a point there," the driver said.
"Say, Dian," Jessamine said.
"Yes, what is it?" the driver asked.
"I was just wondering… could I pay a little visit to Firefly Alley this year?"
Dian groaned. "I had a feeling you were going to bring that up again."
"She's brought it up every time we came by Nemo in the past three years, after all," Raphael piped up from the back. "You really want to see Firefly Alley that badly?"
"I've heard so, so much about it!" Jessamine exclaimed. "So, I just have to see it with my own eyes!"
"Well… it might be a bit hard to meet back up if we go our separate ways," Lorzer spoke up.
"Even though you say that, isn't there a nice convenient event coming up that would make it easy for me to find you?" Jessamine pointed out.
"What event did you have in mind?" Dian asked.
"The Wandering Viola!" Jessamine exclaimed. "Didn't you say it comes by about once every three years?"
"The young lady has a point," Aigil admitted. "It should be returning about two months from now, so… if she just goes to the end of the land in two months, chances are we'll be there.
"So, can I go?" Jessamine asked.
"Well, you're twelve years old now," Lorzer said. "So I guess you can take care of yourself, but… if it was up to me I'd say you should wait another year or two."
"If she was just any ordinary girl, I'd agree," Aigil said. "But Jessamine's one tough cookie. I don't think she'd be likely to run into trouble that she can't fish herself out of."
"Right!" Jessamine said. "If someone's being mean, I just have to sing them a little lullaby, right?"
"Well, the only problem would be, what if you can't sing for some reason?" Dian said.
"Hmm," Jessamine said. "If I couldn't sing… I can't even imagine it… how could that even happen? But still… I have two legs. I'm not stupid. If I couldn't sing for some reason, I'd make a run for it right away!"
"Well, the main thing would be, don't get overconfident," Raphael said. "Don't forget what happened with that old man in Straldam village."
Jessamine pouted a little. "Ugh, did you have to remind me of that?" she grumbled. "Anyway, I did put him to sleep in the end, so it all worked out, didn't it?"
"That might be so, but it was a still a close call," Raphael said.
"I guess I can't deny that," Jessamine said with a sigh. "But what's the answer, hm? Can I see Firefly Alley or not?"
"Let me think about it until we reach Nemo," Dian said. "I'll let you know then."
"Aww, stingy," Jessamine said. "Well, whatever! I'll just go back to singing then!"
And she did just that, reprising the song she'd been singing earlier.
"Round and round the world we go, our destination no-one knows, yet howso might the journey flow, we'll always come back to Nemo!"
"Speaking of which, do you think we'll make it there today?" Lorzer asked. "We're getting pretty low on supplies."
"At the rate we're going, I thought we'd probably camp out by the river and arrive around midday tomorrow," Dian said.
"Yeah, guess it was too much to hope for," Lorzer said. "We'll just have to have a light supper tonight."
