A few months had passed and after the initial pregnancy shock everyone had got used to the fact that Imogen was going to be having a baby. Imogen was even starting to feel excited about it even though it definitely wasn't in her plan.
Rachel had been so supportive and Imogen didn't know how she would've got through it without having her there.
It was a Friday and Rachel, Eddie and the kids had just arrived at the hotel they were staying at for the weekend. One of Eddie's cousins was getting married tomorrow in Yorkshire so they'd booked to stay away for the whole weekend.
Everyone was relieved to get out of the car and stretch their legs after the long car journey.
"Have you heard from Steve? They should be here soon" Rachel asked Eddie
They hadn't travelled to Yorkshire together as Rachel, Eddie and the kids had spent a few days in Edinburgh so had come straight from there.
Eddie pulled his phone out of his pocket and saw he had a message from Steve.
"Oh they only left 10 minutes ago. They were meant to be leaving over an hour ago"
"That's not like them to be running late especially when Imogen's around"
"I know"
"Well shall we check in and then go for a walk? I could do with some fresh air"
"Sounds good to me"
Rachel told the kids the plan. None of them were too impressed.
"Well I think there's a small park somewhere in the grounds so we can go and find that" Rachel said which made Daisy and Michael happier about the walk
They checked in and then went up to their rooms.
Lexie and Olivia were sharing a room and the others were all in a family room.
Rachel quickly sorted their stuff out before going over to Lexie and Olivia's room.
"Have you girls got your dresses out and hung them up?"
"No I'll do it in a minute" Lexie replied
Both girls were lying on their beds on their phones.
"Well come on. Peel your eyes away from your bloody phones for 2 minutes and get sorted. We're waiting to go out"
"Sorry" Lexie said before both girls jumped up and unzipped their suitcases
Rachel hadn't seemed overly happy since about lunch time and had been quite snappy with everyone.
"I'm going back to our room to nip to the loo and then we're leaving"
"Okay" Olivia said as she lifted her dress for tomorrow out of her suitcase
"Rachel doesn't seem in a very good mood today" Olivia commented once Rachel had left their room
"I know. I wonder why. We'd better be ready to go by the time they all come out. I'm just going to nip to the loo" Lexie replied
"Be quick because I need to go too"
It wasn't long before there was a knock on the door so Lexie went to answer it.
"Right are you girls ready?" Rachel asked
"Yep Olivia's just in the bathroom"
Rachel didn't say anything and walked on.
Once Olivia had been Lexie grabbed her phone and their room key and the two of them left.
They went for a bit of an explore of the grounds and it didn't take long to find the park.
Daisy and Michael went straight to it.
"Do you mind if I walk on for a bit?" Rachel asked Eddie
"Of course not. Are you okay Rach?" Eddie asked. He'd also noticed Rachel was in a bad mood
"I'm fine" Rachel said before walking off
As soon as she was away from the others she couldn't help but cry. She'd been needing it all day but hadn't wanted to in front of everyone.
After another month of trying, Rachel still wasn't pregnant. She wasn't expecting to be, but it was still disappointing.
After having a cry and a bit of time to herself Rachel did feel better so went back to join the others. She didn't want to ruin a nice weekend so was intending to make more of an effort not to be in a bad mood.
Rachel returned to the park where Daisy and Michael were still playing. Lexie and Olivia were sat down inside the play area too which gave Rachel the opportunity to tell Eddie.
"Oh Rach, I'm sorry"
"It's fine Eddie. The whole time we were in Edinburgh I just seemed to be in this bubble thinking that maybe I was pregnant this month but then… well I found out before lunch that I'm not"
Eddie wrapped his arms around Rachel.
"But I'm okay now. I've had a cry and put it behind me"
"You don't have to pretend to be okay"
"Honestly, I do feel better now. We've had a lovely time away with the kids and now we're going to have a wonderful weekend at the wedding. I'm not going to be in a bad mood anymore, I promise"
"I am pleased to hear that. But if you want to talk about it, you know we can"
"I know"
After a while in the park they went back to their rooms to get changed. Nobody bothered to properly get ready though.
Once everyone was ready they headed down to the hotel bar to wait for Steve and the girls to arrive.
Rachel ordered a large glass of wine for herself. She hadn't had a drink the whole time they'd been in Edinburgh but there was no reason not to now.
Once they'd ordered their drinks Rachel decided to find out where Steve and the girls were so called Imogen.
"Hi Rachel"
"Hiya. I was just ringing to see how the journey's going"
"The traffic is awful. We're still nearly an hour away"
"That's why you were leaving early to avoid the traffic. How come you ended up leaving so late?"
"Don't go there"
Rachel was confused by this but didn't ask anymore.
"We've booked a table for 6. Just because else it will be too late for Daisy and Michael and we don't want them to be tired tomorrow"
"That's fine. Hopefully we'll get there around then and we can put our stuff in our rooms and then come straight down"
"Okay. We'll see you soon love" Rachel said before putting the phone down
"Something's not right. Imogen didn't seem herself" Rachel said
"She's probably just fed up of sitting in traffic Rach"
"Yeah but I think something must have happened. When I asked why they left so late she just said to not ask"
"Well if it did I'm sure we'll find out when they get here"
"Rach what time do we need to be ready by tomorrow?" Olivia asked
"The wedding starts at 2 so I think we'll probably book taxis from here at about 1"
"So will we have time to go swimming in the morning first?"
"You can go swimming in the morning but I'm planning on having a nice relaxing morning"
"I want to go swimming" Daisy said
"Me and Olivia can take Daisy and Michael swimming and give you two a bit of peace and quiet for a while" Lexie offered
"That's very kind of you. Make sure you leave yourselves enough time to get ready though. We don't want to be late"
"We will don't worry"
Rachel looked at the time and realised it had been nearly an hour since she spoke to Imogen.
"They should be arriving any minute now. I'm going to go to the loo before we go into the restaurant"
"I'll come too Rach" Lexie said
Rachel and Lexie both headed to the toilets.
"These loos are a bit fancy" Rachel said as they walked in
"Yeah they are"
They both went into a cubicle.
Rachel came out first so washed her hands and started rubbing some nice hand cream onto her hands that was on the side whilst waiting for Lexie.
Lexie soon came out too and started washing her hands. She glanced across at Rachel and noticed her rubbing her stomach.
"Are you okay Rachel?"
"Yeah course I am. Why?"
"You look like you're in pain and you're rubbing your tummy"
Rachel hadn't even realised she was rubbing her stomach.
"Yeah I'm fine. Time of the month, that's all"
"Oh" Lexie said realising that Rachel was probably feeling upset because of it
Rachel had talked to the girls before they started trying for a baby because she wanted to know how they all felt about it first.
"I'm sure you noticed I wasn't in a very good mood earlier and that's why. I am sorry for taking it out on all of you though"
"It's okay. You do seem a lot happier now than you were earlier"
"The thing is I really had got my hopes up this time so I was gutted when I got my period this morning which put me in a bad mood. I've had time to process it now though and I'm just looking forward to spending the rest of the weekend away with all of you" Rachel said before pulling Lexie in for a hug
Lexie really liked how open Rachel was about the whole thing with her.
"Right we should probably get back. They'll be wondering what's happened to us. Actually I'll just touch up my lipstick first" Rachel said as she pulled away from Lexie
Rachel got her lipstick out of her handbag and touched up.
"That's a really nice colour. Please could I use it actually Rach? I forgot to put any on earlier"
Rachel passed the lipstick to Lexie.
Lexie put some lipstick on and then they headed back to the bar.
"We should head into the restaurant. It's gone 6 now. No sign of Steve yet?"
"Yes they've arrived. They're just taking their bags up and then coming straight down"
"Okay I guess we'll wait for them to come down then and go in altogether"
"Steve seems really stressed. I don't know what's happened"
They waited a couple of minutes before spotting Steve, Imogen and Poppy walking into the bar area.
They all went over to say hello. Rachel noticed at once that Poppy didn't look very happy.
"I'm going to grab a drink. Does anyone else want one?" Steve asked
"We're heading into the restaurant now. Shall we just order in there?" Rachel suggested
"I'll meet you in there" Steve replied
Steve was visibly stressed and Rachel could tell he needed a couple of minutes to himself.
"Okay, we'll go and get our table"
Steve went to the bar and the others headed to the restaurant.
"What's up sweetheart?" Rachel asked Poppy quietly as they walked into the restaurant
"Nothing I'm fine" Poppy snapped
Once they'd been shown to their table everyone sat down.
"Please can I have chicken nuggets Rachel?" Daisy asked
"You haven't seen a menu yet. They might not even do chicken nuggets"
"I'm so hungry. Can we order soon"
"We will soon. Everyone needs to decide what they're having first though"
"Eddie why don't you go and check on Steve?" Rachel whispered to Eddie who was sat next to her
Eddie got up but just as he was walking out of the restaurant he saw Steve walking in.
"Everything alright mate?" Eddie asked his brother
"Everything's fine"
Steve sat down at the table opposite Eddie and next to Imogen.
Poppy was on the other side of Imogen and had purposefully put her back facing her Dad. She had no intention of speaking to him.
"What are you fancying Imogen?" Steve asked
"I can't decide between the curry and the lasagne"
"I think I'm going to go for the curry. What about you Poppy?"
Poppy didn't acknowledge her Dad.
"Poppy, Dad's talking to you" Imogen said
"I know" Poppy said before going back to talking to Olivia
Olivia found it a bit awkward, she could tell something had happened to make Poppy annoyed with Steve.
Rachel saw the waitress coming over to them.
"Right has everyone decided what they're having?"
"Yes can we finally order now?" Daisy asked
"Oi don't be so impatient young lady"
Once they'd ordered Steve tried talking to Poppy again but she was still ignoring him. Steve was starting to feel very wound up again.
"For God's sake Poppy, stop acting so childish. If you're old enough to be having sex you're old enough to not sulk like a child"
No-one could believe the words that had come out of Steve's mouth, including Steve.
Poppy was absolutely mortified and got straight up and walked off.
Steve put his head in his hands and Imogen went to go after her sister.
"Why don't you give Poppy a few minutes to herself love?" Rachel suggested thinking that may be best
"Okay" Imogen replied but she was feeling helpless. She hated seeing her sister upset so much
"What's sex?" Michael asked
The adults hadn't heard Michael as Rachel and Eddie were focused on Steve.
"It's something adults do. Why don't you ask your Dad about it later?" Lexie replied not knowing what else to say
"Why can't you tell us now? Is it naughty?" Daisy asked
"No it's not naughty but Poppy is a bit too young" Lexie replied
"Why what is it?" Michael asked
Lexie decided to get Rachel involved as she didn't really know how to handle this one.
Olivia was finding it funny but a bit awkward at the same time.
Rachel promised Michael and Daisy that she'd talk to them about it later as it wasn't really a conversation she fancied in the middle of a restaurant.
"Rachel shall I go and find Poppy now?" Imogen asked
"How about I go and have a little chat with her" Rachel said thinking she probably needed to get involved
"Okay then"
"Can I come Rachel?" Daisy asked
"No you stay here. Do you think she'd have gone up to your room?"
"No she doesn't have a room card" Steve replied "thanks for going Rach, I haven't handled the situation well so maybe you could do a better job"
Rachel gave him a sympathetic smile before going to look for Poppy.
Rachel looked downstairs and in the toilets but couldn't find her so decided to look upstairs.
As soon as Rachel got outside she spotted Poppy sat on a bench so went over.
Rachel sat down next to her.
"Are you okay?" Rachel asked to which Poppy shrugged her shoulders
"I know how you must be feeling" Rachel said as she placed her hand on Poppy's back
"No you don't and it's none of your business anyway. It's not a big deal why can't everyone just leave me alone"
Poppy walked off again.
Rachel ran to catch up with her.
"Poppy wait"
Poppy stopped and turned around to face Rachel.
"I'm sorry for trying to interfere love. I just wanted to check you're okay"
"I just said I'm fine"
"Good. Are you going to come back to the table with me then?"
Poppy shook her head.
"Can you get a room card for me please and ask Imogen to bring my tea up to the room?"
"Surely you don't want to stay up there all on your own"
Poppy just nodded her head.
"Okay I'll do that. You don't need to feel embarrassed though if that's why you don't want to come back to the table. Nobody will say anything"
"I just want to be on my own"
Rachel walked back to get a room card for Poppy. She felt a bit concerned about Poppy because she really wasn't old enough to be having sex and wanted to support her but didn't know how as she didn't want to overstep.
"Can I have a room card please? Poppy isn't up for eating with us all and wants to eat in the room"
"I'll go and eat with her" Imogen said
"I think she just wants a bit of space love"
Steve handed a key over to Rachel so Rachel went to give it to Poppy.
Rachel went back to their table and a few minutes later their food came.
"Imogen do you mind taking Poppy's meal up to her please?"
"Okay"
Imogen took her sister's meal up. She went into the room and was surprised to find her sister in floods of tears.
"What's wrong?"
"Nothing I'm fine"
"Oh yeah it really looks like it"
"I just wish Dad never found out about it. It's so embarrassing"
"You probably shouldn't have done it in the first place and then there wouldn't have been anything for him to find out about"
"Just leave me alone"
Imogen hadn't meant for that to come out. She was just worried about her sister but didn't know how to support her.
Imogen went back downstairs and joined the others to eat.
"Is Poppy okay?" Steve asked
Imogen nodded. She knew Poppy wouldn't want everyone to know she was upset so she didn't tell them. She was worried about Poppy though and didn't know what to do.
Imogen had lost her appetite with worrying over Poppy so ended up leaving most of the lasagne she's ordered.
"I'm just going to the loo" Imogen said when the others were all half way through eating
Rachel decided to get up and follow her after a minute. She wanted to find out a bit more about what was going on and thought Imogen was probably the best to speak to about it for now.
Rachel went into the ladies toilets and waited for Imogen to come out. Imogen was surprised when she saw Rachel stood there.
"Oh hi Rachel"
"I was just coming to check on you. Are you okay?"
Imogen nodded as she started to wash her hands.
"I'm guessing you're worrying about Poppy" Rachel said knowing how much Imogen worried about her sister
"I don't know what to do Rachel. Poppy's so annoyed and doesn't want anyone to get involved but I think they need to because she's so young and I just… I just don't know what to do"
"Woah woah woah just calm down. It's all going to be fine. Come on, let's go and have a chat"
Imogen followed Rachel out and they sat at a table in the bar area.
"Do you want to tell me how everything kicked off in the first place?"
"Well I was in my room finishing packing because we were meant to be leaving soon to come here when I heard Dad start shouting. I didn't even know he'd got home from work but I went out to see what was going on. Apparently Poppy was talking to her friends about how she'd… you know last night and Dad overheard and flew off the handle. So then Poppy and Dad started arguing which is why we were so late leaving"
"I see. Had Poppy told you?"
"No I had no idea she was anywhere near ready to or even had a boyfriend. I did want to talk to her about it when Dad had stormed off but I didn't know what to say"
"I know it's a difficult situation love. Poppy's so young and so are you so I'm not surprised you didn't know what to say. I wanted to talk to Poppy earlier but she didn't want me getting involved which is understandable"
"Why don't you try again? She was crying so much when I took her tea up"
"Was she? I thought you said she was fine"
"She wouldn't want everyone knowing she was upset. I think you should talk to her about it all"
"Okay. I'll quickly finish my meal, if they haven't taken it away that is and then I'll try and have another chat with Poppy"
"Sorry"
"Hey it's not your fault. Try not to worry though sweetheart. I know it's a bit of a shock but I'm sure Poppy is fine. Do you know who her boyfriend is?"
"No she still hadn't told me"
Rachel went back and quickly finished her meal before heading up to see Poppy.
Rachel knocked on the door and was surprised when Poppy actually let her in.
"Hello" Poppy said a bit sheepishly
Poppy wasn't crying anymore but it was obvious she had been.
"Is it okay if I come in for a bit love?"
Poppy nodded. She was feeling bad for shouting at Rachel earlier now.
Poppy sat on her bed so Rachel turned the chair around and sat on it.
"I'm sorry for shouting at you earlier"
"That's okay. I know it's because you thought I was interfering but I just wanted to make sure you're okay"
"I know"
"I know you said you're fine but your face is telling me otherwise. I really don't want to stick my awe in where it's not wanted but I do want you to know that I'm here for you"
"I'm not even upset about it. I'm just mad at Dad for treating me like a child and embarrassing me in front of everyone"
"But you are a still a child love which is why you shouldn't be having sex yet"
"It's not a big deal"
"It is a big deal. I didn't even know you had a boyfriend"
"I've been talking to someone for a couple of months now" Poppy told Rachel
She knew Rachel was only trying to help really and it did feel nice to have an older woman to talk to about it. Poppy was actually more upset about last night than she was letting on.
"Is he in your year at school?"
"He's not in my year but he does go to Waterloo Road"
"Who is it?"
"I don't have to tell you"
"Fine you don't have to tell me who it is. Can you at least tell me how old he is though?"
"He's 16" Poppy said whilst looking down
It seemed even worse that she'd had sex with someone that wasn't her own age. Poppy acted very grown up but Rachel knew she wasn't mature enough to be sleeping with boys yet.
"Did he pressure you into it?"
"No I wanted to"
"Was last night your first time?" Rachel asked to which Poppy nodded
Poppy's eyes started to well up so Rachel placed her hand on her leg.
"Did you use protection?"
Poppy didn't say anything.
"Did you?"
"I got the morning after pill"
She knew there was no point in lying to Rachel and it also felt good to get it off her chest. Her friends knew but it wasn't the same as Rachel knowing.
"The morning after pill isn't a form of contraception you know. Besides it's not just pregnancy that you've got to try to avoid is it?"
Poppy shrugged her shoulders as she was starting to feel a bit embarrassed talking about it.
"I'm sure you know about the risk of getting an STI from unprotected sex"
"I'm sorry"
"I don't want you to be sorry love, I just want you to be more careful. Has the boy had sex with anyone else?"
"Yes he's had a girlfriend before"
"Well you're going to have to go for an STD check"
"I'm sure it will be fine"
"It's really not a risk worth taking. Come on Poppy if you're going to be having sex, you've got to be responsible"
Poppy started to cry more showing Rachel how she was really feeling about it.
Rachel pulled the girl into her chest.
"I know you're getting older love and you want to start experimenting but there really is no need to rush. Did you feel ready?"
"Yeah I did" Poppy said weekly through tears
"Did you?" Rachel asked as Poppy didn't sound convincing
"Well not really but I felt like I should because he's had a girlfriend before so I just thought that's what he would expect from me"
"Oh sweetheart, you really shouldn't be having sex yet if you don't feel ready. It would be one thing if you were 14 but it felt right for you. But doing something to please a boy really isn't a good idea. You need to put yourself first"
"He'll think I'm frigid"
"You're not frigid, you're 14. Which means you aren't old enough legally"
"Loads of people have sex before they're 16"
"I know they do but they shouldn't. I just want you to know that it's okay if you wait to have sex again until you're 16 or 18 or 30 if that's when you feel ready"
Poppy nodded. She knew Rachel was right as much as she didn't want to admit it.
"I wish I didn't do it yesterday now" Poppy finally admitted
"Oh Poppy, come here" Rachel said pulling the girl into her chest again "It must feel horrible to be regretting it but the thing is it's done now so there's nothing you can do to change it. Just try not to dwell on it too much and learn from this. Never do anything you don't want to and never let a boy pressure you into anything you don't want to. You know you can always say no, don't you?"
Poppy nodded her head against Rachel's chest. Rachel really did feel it was important she had this chat with Poppy.
"And it's so important you do say no when someone's trying to get you to do something you don't feel comfortable with"
"I know I can't believe I was so stupid"
"Hey you weren't stupid. You were just in a situation that's a bit grown up for you at the moment, that's all"
"Rachel do you really think I need to have an STI test?"
"I really do. Sexual health is not something to take lightly"
Poppy looked worried.
"You don't need to worry about it, it won't be as bad as you think. Who do you want to ask to go with you? Would you want to go with your Dad or Imogen?"
Poppy shook her head.
"Well you could ask a friend… or I can come with you"
"Would you mind coming with me?"
"Of course I don't mind love. I'm here for you"
Rachel was pleased Poppy wanted her to go with her as it meant she could ensure Poppy definitely got checked.
"Thank you"
"You're welcome. Well done for admitting how you're really feeling about this. Just remember, you can talk to me about it anytime you'd like to"
"Thanks Rachel"
"How about we go downstairs and enjoy the rest of the evening"
"I think I'll just stop up here"
"Come down with me. I know you're feeling a bit embarrassed sweetheart but you don't need to be. Let's go down and have a nice evening before the wedding tomorrow. I'm sure Olivia would like you to come down"
"I don't want to talk to Dad about it anymore though"
"Okay, that's fine, you don't have to. He's just worried about you because you're his daughter"
"I know. I can't believe Uncle Eddie knows now though"
"He'll be just as embarrassed if not more so than you so trust me it will be something he tries not to think about and he definitely won't say anything to you about it"
"He better not"
"So are you going to come down with me?"
"I guess so. Is it okay if I wash my face quickly first?"
"Of course it is"
Poppy went into the bathroom and washed her face as her mascara had smudged after crying. Even though she regretted what she did last night she was definitely feeling better after getting how she was feeling off her chest.
She touched up her makeup and quickly went to the loo before going back out to Rachel.
"Rachel is it normal to bleed afterwards?"
"Yes it's completely normal to bleed the first time you have sex"
"Okay good. It wasn't much but I didn't know if there was something wrong"
Rachel squeezed Poppy's arm supportively.
"If you've got any other questions, you know where I am"
"Thank you"
The two of them went downstairs and the others were all still sat at the table. Poppy felt a bit nervous as she walked over to the table.
"I'm sorry for being rude to you earlier Dad" Poppy said
"That's okay love. Are you okay?"
Poppy gave a small nod before sitting next to Olivia. She just wanted to enjoy the rest of the evening and forget about what she did the day before.
