The Call
A few weeks after her encounters with Evan had begun to stir up unexpected feelings in both herself and Scorpius, Rose found herself drawn back to her memories of their discovery in the secret room. She hadn't returned there since that night in first year, but the strange, whispered memories of the room and the mysterious symbols felt closer than ever. It was as if the castle itself was calling her back.
Late one evening, after finishing a study session with Evan, she passed by a familiar corridor in the dungeons. Rose hesitated, glancing around to make sure no one was watching, then slipped down the dimly lit hallway, her footsteps echoing off the cold stone.
When she reached the door of the hidden room, her hand trembled slightly as she touched the door. It opened soundlessly, revealing the shadowy, ancient space beyond. Rose's heart pounded with a mixture of fear and excitement, the thrill of rediscovery washing over her.
As she stepped inside, the room seemed unchanged—the same pedestal, the same haunting symbols etched into the stone. But there, lying on the pedestal, was something she hadn't seen the first time they'd been here.
A ring.
It was small, made of tarnished silver, with an intricate snake design coiled around an emerald stone. The ring seemed to pulse faintly, as though alive with a hidden energy, and as Rose reached for it, a strange sense of familiarity washed over her.
The moment her fingers brushed the cold metal, a whisper seemed to echo in her mind, soft yet insistent.
You belong with me…
Rose jerked her hand back, heart racing. She glanced around, half-expecting to see someone standing beside her. But she was alone, and the room was silent once more. Taking a steadying breath, she picked up the ring and slipped it into her pocket. Whatever this ring was, it was tied to her, and she felt an unexplainable need to uncover its secrets.
The following evening, Rose found Scorpius alone in the library. He was reading by the light of a single candle, his brow furrowed in concentration. She slid into the seat across from him, glancing around to ensure they were alone.
"Scorpius," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I found something."
He looked up, instantly intrigued. "What is it?"
Glancing around one last time, Rose reached into her pocket and pulled out the ring. She placed it on the table between them, watching as Scorpius leaned forward, his expression turning serious.
"Where did you get this?" he asked, his fingers brushing over the tarnished silver.
"The room we found in first year. It was just…sitting there, waiting for me," she murmured, a trace of unease in her voice. "And when I touched it, I heard something—like a voice, calling to me."
Scorpius's face darkened, his eyes flicking up to meet hers. "Rose, that's…a bit creepy, don't you think?"
She managed a weak smile. "A bit, yeah. But I can't ignore it. This ring—it feels connected to me somehow."
He studied her face, and she felt a flicker of warmth under his gaze. "You're not planning to wear it, are you?"
Rose hesitated. "I don't know. Part of me wants to, but another part feels like…like it might change something. As if the ring holds secrets I'm not quite ready for."
Scorpius exhaled, his fingers lingering on the ring. "Then don't. At least, not until we know more about it. Let's do some research—see if we can figure out what this ring really is and why it's calling to you."
She nodded, grateful for his steady presence. Together, they delved into the library over the following days, hunting for any mention of magical rings.
But as they dug deeper, they began to uncover more than they'd bargained for. One night, Rose found an old text mentioning magical heirlooms linked to the Hogwarts founders—artifacts that could pass down ancient powers and secrets to their rightful heirs. Her heart raced as she read the words, a sense of dread mingling with excitement.
Scorpius leaned over her shoulder, reading the passage with equal fascination. "Do you think this ring is one of them?"
Rose nodded, barely able to breathe. "If it is, then…it might mean I'm connected to Slytherin somehow. But how? And why would my family never have told me?"
The tension between them was palpable, and Rose felt a surge of gratitude for Scorpius's unwavering support. He was the only person she trusted with this, the only one who could understand the gravity of what they'd found.
But just as they were about to continue reading, a familiar voice interrupted them.
"Well, well—burning the midnight oil, are we?" Evan appeared at the end of the aisle, his trademark grin flashing in the candlelight. Rose's heart skipped a beat, caught between the thrill of discovery and the sudden reminder of her shifting feelings.
Scorpius stiffened, his expression carefully neutral as he looked up at Evan. "Just studying," he replied, his tone a bit too polite.
Evan raised an eyebrow, glancing between them. "Mind if I join? I was actually hoping to catch up with Rose about our last Defense practice."
Scorpius gave a tight smile, but Rose could see the flicker of irritation in his eyes. "We're a bit busy right now."
Evan ignored him, looking at Rose with that easy charm. "Come on, it won't take long. Just a few quick questions, then I'll leave you to your…midnight reading."
Rose hesitated, glancing between them, feeling the tension rise. She could see the jealousy in Scorpius's gaze and the challenge in Evan's grin. "Um..why don't we finish this up later in the common room Scorpius? I won't be too long." With a grin Evan offered his arm, leading her in the direction of the Defense section, away from Scorpius.

A few days after her late-night discovery of the hidden ring, Rose found herself more unsettled than ever. The ring—a delicate silver band with a serpentine design coiling around a deep green emerald—had felt inexplicably familiar from the moment she'd picked it up. She hadn't told Scorpius everything yet, that she'd put the ring on and it was a perfect fit, but since she had, she couldn't convince herself to take it off. If was like the ring had a mind of its own. It wanted her to wear it. It wanted her to ask more questions and search for more answers. She knew he would say it was dangerous, but she also knew he would be there for her, as he always was, but part of her feared what they might uncover.
One evening after class, Rose was alone by the lake, watching the sun set behind the Forbidden Forest, when Evan approached her, a thoughtful look on his face.
"Rose," he started, his voice softer than usual. "You look worried. Is everything alright?"
She turned, offering a faint smile. "Just school and…other things. You know how it is."
He took a step closer, his gaze unwavering. "I do, but there's something I wanted to tell you." He hesitated, then took her hand, his thumb brushing over her fingers. "I think we both know I didn't ask for tutoring just because I needed help with Defense. I like spending time with you, Rose. You're…different."
Rose's heart skipped a beat, taken aback by his directness. She hadn't allowed herself to consider Evan's interest as anything serious until now, but standing here with his hand on hers, she felt a warmth spread through her. She glanced down, her fingers lightly brushing the mysterious ring on her hand, the green stone glinting in the dimming light.
"I…I didn't realize," she stammered, feeling a swirl of excitement and uncertainty.
Evan smiled, his expression softening. "I wanted you to know. And I'd love the chance to get to know you even better, if you'd be open to it."
Just then, the sound of footsteps made them both turn. Scorpius was approaching, his face unreadable as he took in the sight of them together. Rose quickly pulled her hand back, feeling a pang of guilt under his intense gaze.
"Am I interrupting?" Scorpius asked, his voice light but his eyes giving away a flicker of frustration.
Evan gave a relaxed shrug, slipping his hands into his pockets. "Not at all. Rose and I were just…talking."
Scorpius looked from Evan to Rose, his expression guarded. "Well, if you're finished 'talking', Rose, we were supposed to meet in the library for that project. Remember?"
She caught the hint of urgency in his tone and nodded, relieved for the excuse. "Right. Sorry, Evan, I've got to go."
Evan's smile faded slightly, but he gave her a nod. "Of course. I'll see you around, Rose."
As she walked away with Scorpius, she felt his silent tension beside her. They made their way to the library in silence until he finally spoke.
"So…you and Evan?"
Rose glanced at him, unsure how to respond. "I don't know. I mean, he's nice. And he's…interested."
Scorpius's jaw tightened slightly. "Interested? Oh I'd say he's more than interested—"
She stopped walking, turning to face him. "What's your problem, Scorpius? Can't I have other friends?"
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. "Of course you can. But…Rose, that's not what I came to talk to you about. I found something. His gaze dropped to her hand, where the ring sat glinting softly on her finger. "That ring…there's something off about it."
Rose frowned, surprised. "What do you mean?"
He lowered his voice, glancing around to make sure they were alone. "I did some more research, and I found a reference to a ring that once belonged to Salazar Slytherin—a ring that was thought to be lost centuries ago. It was rumored to be enchanted, and not exactly with friendly magic."
A chill ran down Rose's spine. She looked at the ring on her finger, the green stone gleaming, as though in response to his words. "But it's just a ring, Scorpius."
He shook his head. "Maybe. But if it really belonged to Slytherin, then it could be dangerous."
Rose's heart pounded, torn between her growing curiosity and the strange unease she felt since she'd started wearing the ring. And now, with Evan's unexpected interest and Scorpius's protectiveness, she found herself caught between two paths, unsure which one would lead her to the answers she sought—or to danger she couldn't yet understand.
The morning after her conversation with Scorpius, Rose was still thinking about his warning as she walked into the Great Hall for breakfast. The ring felt heavier than usual on her finger, its presence a constant reminder of the mystery it held. She was careful to keep it hidden, though, slipping her hand into her robe pocket whenever her father looked her way.
Rose hadn't told anyone else about the ring, not even her parents. She knew they would have too many questions—questions she wasn't ready to answer. Especially not to her mother, who, despite her attempts to stay out of Hogwarts gossip, still had an instinct for uncovering secrets.
As she filled her plate, Evan slid into the seat across from her, his grin disarming as ever. "Morning, Rose."
She smiled back, her pulse quickening. "Morning."
"Listen, before we got interrupted yesterday, I wanted to ask if you'd like to go to Hogsmeade with me. Just the two of us." He looked down at his plate for a moment, clearly trying to seem casual. "Maybe get a Butterbeer, see some shops."
Rose hesitated, her mind flashing to Scorpius's face the last time Evan had shown interest in her. But the idea of going on a real date, with someone who actually seemed fascinated by her, was exhilarating. "I'd like that."
Evan's face lit up. "Great. Meet me outside after breakfast on Saturday?"
She nodded, and for the rest of the morning, she felt a giddy sense of anticipation. But that feeling faded when she spotted Scorpius in the hallway between classes, looking less enthusiastic than usual. She guessed he'd heard about her date with Evan—rumors traveled fast here.
The weekend arrived, and Rose found herself in Hogsmeade with Evan, enjoying the crisp air as they strolled through the village, laughing and talking over Butterbeer. Evan was funny and attentive, and for a while, she forgot about her secrets. Yet, each time he glanced at her with that admiring look in his eyes, she felt a tiny flicker of guilt. Scorpius's voice echoed in her mind.
"Something on your mind?" Evan asked, leaning closer as they walked.
Rose blinked, offering him a quick smile. "Just…school stuff."
But Evan looked unconvinced. "Well, you know you can talk to me about anything." He squeezed her hand reassuringly, his warmth a comforting presence. Rose felt a genuine connection, though she couldn't ignore the nagging thought of Scorpius—and of the strange power calling to her from the ring.
Back at Hogwarts, Rose returned to her dormitory that evening to find an unexpected message waiting for her. A note, signed by none other than her mother, Pansy, requesting that she meet her parents and the Malfoys in Professor Malfoy's office the following afternoon.
Rose's heart pounded. Her parents rarely visited Hogwarts, and if Scorpius's family was involved, it couldn't be good. She ran her fingers over the ring in her pocket, more determined than ever to keep it a secret.
The next afternoon, Rose entered Professor Hermione Malfoy's office with Scorpius by her side. Professor Malfoy stood beside the Gryffindor banner, looking both imposing and kind, her familiar sharp gaze fixed on her son and Rose as they entered. Beside her stood Rose's parents, Ron and Pansy, and Draco Malfoy.
"Rose, thank you for coming," her mother said, her voice unusually gentle.
Pansy exchanged a glance with Draco, who nodded, his expression unreadable. Professor Malfoy cleared her throat, addressing Rose with a calm yet serious tone. "There's something we feel you should know. Your family history is…complex, as you're aware, but there may be elements of it that even you don't fully understand."
Rose shot a quick glance at Scorpius, who gave her a small nod of encouragement. Her hand slipped into her pocket, fingers brushing over the ring's smooth surface. She wasn't ready to reveal it yet, but it felt like a protective talisman, anchoring her.
Her mother's eyes softened. "Rose, I know that you've probably heard stories about our family. Some of them are true, and some…aren't. You know about all our parts in the second wizarding war. We're telling you this because, as you grow older, there may be things you'll have to face—things only someone with your heritage can understand."
Hermione Malfoy nodded in agreement, looking at her son before returning her gaze to Rose. "We're here to help you, Rose. You're not alone in this, no matter what you discover."
Draco, quiet for most of the conversation, finally spoke. "The castle is a place of magic and history beyond what most people realize. Some artifacts from the founders still exist, even now, and if one were to find such an object…" He trailed off, his gaze sharpening on Rose. "It could be dangerous."
Rose felt her pulse quicken. Did he know about the ring? How? She struggled to keep her expression calm, but Draco's intense gaze told her he suspected she was hiding something. Torn between keeping her secret and the strange comfort of her family's presence, Rose nodded slowly, swallowing her questions.
Hermione's gaze softened as she looked at Rose. "Your mother, your father, and the rest of us have tried to protect you from parts of that legacy, but you're older now. And while we don't have all the answers, we believe there are things you deserve to know."
Draco, still leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, glanced at Ron before addressing Rose directly. "What we're about to share isn't easy. Only a few of us know the full truth of your lineage, and it's vital it stays that way."
Rose's mind raced, trying to process the gravity of the situation. She hadn't expected so many people, or such seriousness. She knew her family guarded secrets, but she hadn't realized just how close they were to those secrets.
Pansy grabbed Hermione's hand for support. Holding back tears she finally addressed her. "Rose…Ron isn't your biological father."
Rose looked over at Ron, who had hung his head, and then back at Pansy who was fighting tears. She started to stumble but felt Scorpius' hand on her back, steadying her.
"N..no…daddy..?" she pleading looked at Ron, practically begging him with one glance, "she's lying…daddy tell me she's lying."
Harry gave Ron's shoulder a supportive squeeze and he looked up at her, silent tears running down his face. "I'm sorry baby girl. It's true, I'm not your father biologically."
Harry, who had been silent up until now, spoke gently. "Rose, you have a remarkable heritage, but it comes with a burden. Knowing too much, too soon, could be dangerous. Some of your questions may go unanswered, at least for now. But we're here for you—for whatever you discover."
Scorpius placed an arm around her as she cried, his expression both protective and pained. "You're not alone, Rose. We'll face whatever comes, together."
Rose suddenly stiffened. She pulled back from Scorpius and looked at her mother eyes filled with anger. "Well if Ron isn't my father, then who is?"
Her mother sighed, letting a silent tear run down her cheek. "His name was Tom Riddle, but most people know him as—"
Rose was horrified, the name that left her mouth was cold as ice. "Lord Voldemort"
"Yes.."
Suddenly the coldness turned to red hot anger, and she turned out of Scorpius' arms before he could blink and stormed up to her mother.
"How could you mother?? I know we talked about you being a death eater back in the day but I had no idea it was this bad! No, being just any old death eater wasn't enough! You had to go and make yourself Lord Voldemort's whore!"
"Roselyn Hermione Weasley that is enough!" Ron stood in front of her and while his voice was stern he didn't look angry. He had pain written in his features. "You will not talk to your mother that way. You don't know the situation at all. If you would calm down and listen, we will explain it to you, but there will be no more outbursts like this do you understand?"
Rose closed her eyes and took a deep breath. "Ok, explain."
It feels weird for me to put a note at the end of the chapter. Lol Anyway, how exactly Pansy ends up impregnated by Voldemort is explained in The Grey. If you dont care about that, keep on going. If you're curious then i suggest reading The Grey first.
Happy Reading!
