When You Hear A Sound
Turning at the sound of the intercom alert outside the gate Julia turned to Skye and asked, "Are you going to answer that."
Snorting the investigator said, "It's not my house."
"I'm getting it," Castle told them in mock annoyance.
"Are you sure about fitting us all in here?" Mary asked.
"Them," Beckett corrected the doctor since that question had been directed to her. "And they said they were fine with staying in the basement."
"Now that you have the whole basement free," Mary commented.
"How're they in the house?" Skye asked.
"Good," Beckett replied since the Lennoxes had moved out three days before. She smiled and said, "The boys want to have a party but their parents managed to convince them to give them a little time before they do that."
"And when are they?" Skye said with a smile.
"Probably in March," Beckett answered before they were heading to the entry.
"They're pulling up," Castle said, turning to them.
"Are you going to help at all?" Beckett said in amusement.
"Once they start getting out," Castle replied. He paused and then said, "Are we sure we couldn't have done the lockdown later in the year?
"Not the way Zak told me," Skye replied. "This was the only time the owner allowed them to use the house."
Beckett wanted to ask why that was when her husband was opening the door and they were stepping outside to greet the Ghost Adventures crew. It took some time before they were entering the house and she and her husband were directing everyone to where they would be staying for the next two nights.
"It's a nice house," Zak said once they were gathering together in the kitchen after everyone had unpacked.
"Yeah, that pool room…" Aaron said jokingly.
"You can go in," Eliza said. "But… do you have to leave that fast?"
"Let's… wait," Zak said since some of the others of the crew were looking at him. "We're going to New Jersey but we're not scheduled until after Valentine's Day."
"That long? Then you can extend your stay a little more if you want to," Castle urged him.
"Alright, but I hope we can turn our attention to the lockdown tonight," Zak told everyone. "Did you guys take naps?" he asked.
Watching her sister and Mari, who had come over, nod, Eliza then asked, "I can't go with you?"
"No," Beckett said firmly though she was startled when her husband was speaking.
"Unless it's like Manresa and there's a child there," Castle said.
"Not that I've heard," Zak said after looking at his fellow cast members who shook their heads.
"You can't," Julia said. She wasn't surprised when her sister was frowning and was about to speak again when the little girl slumped her shoulders and spoke herself.
"I know, Grandmama and Mamó don't want me to go," Eliza said. "But I will someday."
"We'll see," Beckett couldn't help saying before turning to her husband as he spoke.
"We were going to order in dinner," Castle explained. "But we'll allow you guys to choose."
"No?" Skye asked in surprise, able to tell some of the crew was hesitating.
"We were thinking of having an experiment," Zak said. "We learned everyone at Briar Grove that had experienced anything were families."
"What does that have to do with dinner?" Mary asked in obvious confusion.
"I think they want us to have dinner there," Beckett said. "All together?"
"That would be nice," Zak said. "If you don't mind," he added.
"I don't think so, but are you expecting all of us to go?" Castle asked after he and his wife had exchanged a look.
"Just one for sure," Aaron said, smiling at the writers' daughters.
"Me?" Eliza asked, a wide smile one her face since he'd been looking at her.
"Just for dinner," Jay said when the little girls' mother was beginning to frown. "Not for the lockdown."
"He's right," Zak said. "And we're going to film a little of the dinner since we'd like to try using a recorder at least."
"As long as it's only for dinner," Beckett said with a nod.
"Great, then we'll get the papers all signed and head over there," Zak told them before they were gathering around the kitchen table to start signing.
Once everything was prepared, Castle and Beckett said goodbye to their parents and Josie once their middle daughters had as well. Finn and Emmie were there but sleeping at that point, so the family asked Martha and Jim to tell the twins goodbye.
"How're those two doing?" Zak asked as they were walking down the hall.
"Really well," Castle said first.
"He's right, they were born a little premature but they're thriving," Beckett said, startled when Jay suddenly stopped walking.
"What about them?" the tech asked. "Will they have abilities too?"
"No," Skye said instantly as everyone was looking at her.
"How can you answer that so quickly?" Zak inquired with a slight frown.
"Because it's very obvious," Skye said, catching Beckett's gaze. "They're not related by blood to Kate, it's from her maternal grandmother's line."
"Alexis will be relieved to hear that," Castle said, squeezing his wife's hand since he was aware of why the investigator was looking at her the way she was. He went to Eliza and urged her to walk to the entry, leaving behind Beckett and the investigator.
"I'm still a little unsure about her," Skye said when they were alone.
"I'm not surprised," Beckett said, speaking Irish as she was. She hesitated for a moment and then said, "But I've read some things from her birth mother, she never indicated having abilities. Her father?"
"I can't say," Skye replied. She glanced down the hall and said, "I would say they're her own, she was struck on the head I recall you telling me," relived when the writer was responding swiftly.
"She was, then chloroformed a few days later," Beckett said. She hesitated for a moment and then asked, "Do you think that's where she got it from?"
Nodding once Skye then said firmly, "We all have latent abilities of some kind, whether they be inherent or not. I believe Julia's the latter, her head injury likely started it."
Looking ahead of them at the entry they were walking up to slowly, Beckett said, "I don't need to tell her that do I?"
"Has she asked?" Skye asked, glancing at the teen herself though they were still speaking in Irish.
"No," Beckett said. "Luckily," she added under her breath before they were stepping into the foyer and moving to the cars. The three girls were with her and Castle in their car and she listened to their conversation behind them.
"Are you still mad you don't get to go to the lockdown?" Mari asked.
"I kind of am," Eliza replied. "At least I get to have that dinner." She then frowned and said, "What are we having for dinner?"
"I think they're deciding," Julia answered with a smile.
"It's not going to be that huge dinner they had at that house in Colorado is it?" Eliza asked.
"I doubt it," Castle said, unable to help breaking into their talk. He then said, "But they're likely going to pick for us. I would let him actually."
"Do you think it's going to be historic?" Mari asked.
"I doubt it," Beckett said. "To be honest it might just be pizza."
Gasping Eliza said, "Oh I hope so!"
"We'll find out," Castle said, unable to help speaking in amusement before turning the car. Since the home they were going to wasn't that far in the Hamptons, he was soon pulling into the driveway of the manor. After they were out he saw an enclosed pop up set next to the garage and he said to the crew, "Nerve center?"
"It is," Jay said. "I was hoping for that three seasons room here at the back but Zak wants us away from house after dinner."
"Please tell me you have a heater for him," Mary said jokingly.
"There's two, since we're not going to stay in the house the whole time," Zak said. "But we need to set up."
"Then why are we here?" Skye asked.
"To take a tour," Zak said.
"Without any of you guys?" Skye responded with her eyebrow raised.
"Just you and Kate," Zak said. "I want you to walk through the home and get an idea of the house."
"Without us knowing anything," Skye stated. When he nodded she frowned for a moment and then said, "You're lucky you know."
"That you'll do it?" Zak asked her.
"Yeah, against my better judgement," Skye said with a sigh. "But I think you're right, we should get a feel for this house."
"Should I be going?" Beckett asked.
"He said you should," Skye told her friend, smiling when the writer was narrowing her eyes at her before she responded.
"Fine," Beckett said simply before she turned to Zak. "Is anyone going with us?"
"I am," Julia said. She glanced at her friend standing next to her and said, "Mari too."
"And me," Eliza said firmly before anyone could speak.
"I think it's alright," Skye said, not surprised when the others were turning to her. "But if things take a turn you'll have to get her Rick."
Nodding, Castle said, "I had a feeling. Though what exactly am I going to do?"
"Help us," Aaron said jokingly. When the writer nodded he said, "I wasn't serious."
"It looks like you could use the help," Castle commented.
"And I'll be filming," Mary said, getting everyone's attention. "I assumed."
"It would help," Zak said, turning as one of the crew was bringing over a camera. "Be careful with that."
"And this," Billy said, bringing over a recorder.
"Just that?" Skye asked. At the tech's nod she said, "Okay, here we go," before they were following Zak to the house.
"Okay, we're here in Briar Grove Manor's dining room," Zak was saying to the camera that Jay held. "And we're going to be conducting an experiment before we start our normal lockdown. The history of this place has a long line of families experiencing paranormal activity that scared them so badly they moved out. So I had the idea of trying to have a family dinner first and seeing if that wouldn't bring some spirits here. There's a digital recorder on top of the credenza over there and Billy will be using the paranormal puck." He turned to the table and said, "We have pizza and everyone's ready so let's eat."
Once Zak and Jay were sitting down the former said, "You can talk as normal, actually that's what I'm hoping for."
"Part of the experiment?" Skye asked.
"Yeah," Zak said.
"The kids should start," Billy said.
"About what?" Julia couldn't help asking with a smile.
"You're sure it's okay you're missing school for two days?" Jay inquired.
"Yeah, we had our assignments during the weekend and we finished already," Julia said since that was directed to her and Mari.
"I had mine for today too," Eliza said.
"I still don't think you can stay," Julia told her sister. She laughed with the others when Eliza made a face and she said, "Sorry."
After Eliza had shrugged Zak was turning his attention to Skye saying, "How're you?"
"You've heard?" Skye asked. When all four men nodded she couldn't help smiling before she said, "You'll edit this out?"
"Unless we have evidence right now," Zak answered.
"We can just play the evidence if it's right now," Billy commented.
"Okay, well, I still have a job if that's what you're asking," Skye answered. "Though it took all month to convince the heads of the NTSB that we needed to change our investigative policy." She was about to say more when her wife was speaking wryly about that though she wasn't that surprised.
"And it was a long month," Mary said, shaking her head. She then said, "But they've changed that policy," reminding her wife pointedly.
"So you managed to get them to change the Comair findings?" Beckett asked.
"Not yet?" Castle then said in surprise when the investigator was obviously hesitating.
"That will take more time and it's for the people in D.C. to do," Skye said. "As I've been instructed." She smiled when the others looked at her in surprise and said, "They don't want me to butt in anymore, and since it took me so long to just get them to agree to finding all causes for the crash and not just one I'll have to leave it be." She grew serious then and said, "But Trevor is going to keep up with that and make sure they change the cause from solely pilot error since there were a lot of factors that added up to the crash." She looked at the three girls and said, "Though I think that's all I'm going to say about that."
"She's right," Castle took up. "What about this house?"
"The girls?" Zak immediately inquired, nodding to them.
"I want to hear," Eliza said. She paused for a moment and said, "And find out why it was so nice in that room we went to."
"The main bedroom," Beckett explained.
"So you all felt that?" Aaron asked.
"Really peaceful," Mary said, looking at Castle.
"She's right," he quickly took up. "We all sensed it."
"Did you experiment with that?" Zak asked Skye.
"Yeah, and all the adults left them in the room," the investigator replied. Looking at Julia she said, "They told us it was the exact same."
"Okay," Zak said when the others were looking at him. "This home was built in 1910 though there was a house here first." He paused and then looked at the writers asking, "Do you know this manor's history?"
"A-" Castle started to say before his wife was placing her hand on his arm.
"We might have just heard the legends," Beckett said. "So we'd like to hear what your researcher found out."
Nodding, Zak said, "So the original owner was Zephan Garrison and he was involved with the Hudson Southern Railroad."
"The house is large," Mary said.
"And he had a lot of money, but he ran into some trouble with the company since it was a monopoly," Zak continued with a nod. "He ran for Panama and never returned though he did leave it to his butler."
"His butler?" some of the others said at the same time.
"Yes, I think doing that kept the land from being sold… Jeff Belanger couldn't really find out the law Garrison was trying to circumnavigate doing that," Zak said before he stopped seeing Castle's hand up in the air slightly.
"Are they sure he left the country alive?" he asked when the paranormal investigator nodded to him.
"They are, there are pictures of him," Zak said. "And he was involved with the Panama Canal somehow so he maintained his wealth. But he never returned and the butler put the manor for sale. There was one family, the Wards but they moved out in 1922 which brings us to why the house is thought to be haunted. Martin Lindt bought it for his wife, Anais Laurent, Jeff said they were well known names."
"The Lindts are original to the island," Castle said first. "And the Laurents came later but they're intermarried with Dutch families. And both are wealthy."
"We've heard about Martin and Anais," Beckett said, not surprised when her husband was nodding in agreement. "But you're telling the story."
"They were married in February of 1921," Zak said. "But didn't get the house until the next year. The year after that, Anais disappeared."
"Did they ever find her?" Mari asked after she and Julia exchanged a look.
"No, everyone suspected she'd been killed," Zak said. "And they suspected her husband, for some reason. Even Jeff was able to see in some articles that their devotion to each other was well known. And that was the word that was used about them by the way."
"What happened after?" Billy asked before he was suddenly exhaling hard. "Whoa, it just got freezing in here."
"Anais are you here?" Aaron asked. "Talk to that red light over there."
"It's not her," Skye said, not surprised when attention turned to her immediately. She shook her head when her wife was touching her shoulder and said, "It's Martin, he wants us here so you don't need to worry. Keep going."
"The suspicion was too much for Martin… and the fact that his wife was gone," Zak said. He was about to continue when he glanced at Eliza and said, "Maybe I shouldn't keep going."
"No, you can, I know what happened already," the little girl said quickly. She smiled at everyone before she said, "He's here in the room remember?" Growing serious she said, "I can't see his neck though… I don't like it."
When the girl's parents nodded to his look, Zak sighed and said, "Don't have nightmares, he hung himself in the building that was on the property-" startled when he was interrupted by Julia.
"It's not there anymore is it?" the teen asked. When he shook his head she said hurriedly, "But you can see the outline of it."
"The foundation," Jay said. "I noticed that too," he said when Julia looked at him. "And I did not feel that great looking at it."
"Me neither," Eliza said. She saw the sudden concern on her parents' faces and said, "I'm okay, let me finish dinner, please?"
"Oh, big burst of cold air," Aaron said when it happened before anyone could speak.
"Grab the spirit box," Zak said before Billy was doing so. "But when that happened there was nothing else about Anais," he continued, speaking faster. "After that the people that moved in always moved out after a year or two, the most one family stayed was the first after them. Jeff couldn't find their name, just that it started with an F and he mentioned they were a new family. So the experiences that he found were cold spots, noises which might be residual and an all together unpleasant feeling in the basement and the building. The last family here was in 1966 and it's been empty since then but it's used for weddings right?"
"Parties too," Castle said. "It's a rental."
Nodding Zak said, "When we were getting this set up the owner said he was ready to get rid of the property."
"Maybe he doesn't need to," Julia said slowly. She wasn't surprised when the others looked at her and she hurried to take a drink of her juice so she wouldn't have to speak further.
"You don't want to elaborate?" Billy asked her gently.
Smiling slightly when the teen was shaking her head, Skye said, "She doesn't need to." Satisfied she had everyone's attention she then said, "You should turn on the box," not surprised when Billy was hesitating before he spoke a little carefully.
"I don't think I should be holding this," the AV tech explained.
"Kate," Skye said abruptly.
"Me?" Beckett asked, startled. She wasn't surprised when Billy was immediately handing the device to her and she said, "Not Julia."
"No," the teen herself said. "Skye's right Mom, I think you need to hold it."
Since everyone was looking at her, Beckett nodded and turned it on before she moved her empty plate on her husband's and set the device in its place. As soon as she pulled her hand away she was nearly jumping when it said the word upstairs though it was faint.
