Mavuika's POV
I stood in front of the memorial for those who fell during Natlan's war against the Abyss. As I looked at it, I let out a sad sigh. Then, I suddenly heard footsteps coming from behind me, so I turned around to see who it was.
"Oh, it's you, Captain", I said.
"Greetings, Archon. I have come to pay my respects to those who fell during the war."
After the captain said this, he placed a bouquet of marigolds in front of the memorial.
"Thank you, Captain", I said. "The reports I received state that some of your own soldiers fell during the battle. I am very sorry for that."
"You need not apologise, Archon", Capitano reassured me. "Every good soldier knows that, whenever they decide to fight in a battle, it could be their last."
"Well, we owe the Fatui a great deal of thanks for their aid in the battle", I said. "On behalf of all of Nathan: Capitano, I thank you and your soldiers very much."
"I appreciate it, Archon", Capitano said. "Thank you."
After I heard this, I turned back to look at the memorial, and sighed sadly.
"You know, Captain", I started. "I can't help but wonder if you were right?"
"Right about what", Capitano asked in confusion.
"I had the option to do something about the Abyss sooner", I pointed out. "If I had gone with that option, and not have waited, then maybe…"
I could feel myself becoming emotional as I said this, but before I could finish…I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder. This action caused me to look up at Capitano in shock.
"I understand how you feel, Archon", he revealed.
"You do", I asked in shock.
"Yes", Capitano replied. "I was the same as you when Khaenri'ah was destroyed. I kept thinking to myself 'If I had done things differently, if I had acted sooner, would things have turned out differently? I have lived with this guilt for centuries. However, with all that time, I've come to realise something."
"Which is", I asked.
"There is no point in wondering what could've happened if you had made a different choice", Capitano replied. "After all, you cannot change what has happened. However, what you can do is try to protect and preserve what has not been lost."
After I heard this, I thought about Capitano's words for a moment. Then, I looked up at him, and nodded.
"You're right, Captain", I said. "Dwelling on what I could've done will accomplish nothing. I cannot bring back those who were lost in the war against the Abyss, but…what I can do is fight to ensure the future of those who are still here."
"Exactly", Capitano said.
"Thank you for what you said, Captain", I said. "It has helped me to focus on what truly matters."
"It's not a problem", Capitan ensured me. "I simply do not want you to spend time on pointless things when that time can be used to focus on what truly matters."
"I understand", I said. "I won't dwell on what cannot be changed anymore."
"Good", Capitano said. "Then let's focus on ensuring that this tragedy does befall Natlan again."
