'Xena, stop!' Faith said frantically.
'What's wrong?' Xena asked, even as she felt her 'danger sense' activate. Wait, hers? 'That felt like my danger sense. But I'm not in my own body.'
"Ceridian, hold up. There may be danger nearby." Xena addressed the centaur.
"Something feels off to me too, Xena. The animal part of me is uncomfortable, the way it would be in the presence of a demon of some sort."
"I think I'm sensing the same thing. I'm going to talk to Faith for a moment."
'That's my version of a danger sense, Xena.' Faith said in their currently shared head. 'Are you sure you're not a Slayer? Nevermind, that sense tells me there's a real demon, maybe even a vampire, around here. Not a transformed kid, unless the Magic somehow turned them into a real demon.'
'If it is a real demon I can kill it from a distance.' Xena offered, holding up the chakram. 'There's no need for me to risk either your life or your child's life taking either into battle.'
'Xena, that was a toy before the Magic happened to it!' Faith exclaimed, looking at and feeling the chakram in her hand as Xena held it. 'It wasn't even metal, let alone sharp!'
'It looks and feels exactly the way it should.' Xena took a look at the chakram in her hand. 'It feels perfectly balanced and as long as I can throw it accurately while in your body, it should work exactly the way it's supposed to.'
'And it'll come right back to you, like a boomerang?'
'I'm not familiar with a boomerang.' Xena admitted, always curious about unknown weapons.
'Triangular shaped throwing weapon.' Faith replied. 'Invented by the native people's of Australia, a county far south, way beyond Egypt or any of the countries you know of around them. Slayers come from every people that have ever existed and we dream about the previous ones. If we went to Australia, I could show you places and things I've never seen with my own eyes, but Slayers that came before me have. And because of them, I have an instinctive ability to use the weapons and fighting techniques they knew. Diana's job is to help me figure it out and use it to the best of my ability. I may not be able to read your mind, Xena, but that instinctive ability may mean I can use a chakram because a Slayer before me did.'
'It's not a common weapon, but if a Slayer came from the region it was invented in, than you may be right and my using it while in your body will reinforce that instinct.'
'I'd loved to be able to use your chakram, Xena, it's as iconic as you are. Okay, calming down.' Faith mentally took a deep breath. 'We need to find that demon and make sure it's not hurting anyone. My sense is it's beyond that house over there.' Faith tried to point, but her hand refused to obey her command. 'Damn, you're definitely in charge of my body, Xena. But don't worry, I'm taking notes, the chance to learn from you is something I can't pass up.'
'I have no doubt Janus would be aware of that fact.' Xena mused, as she dismounted and followed the danger sense that was so much like her own. 'And may have been one of his reasons for allowing his power to be used for this stunt. Killing your enemies from a distance, especially bacchae, will help ensure you live longer.'
'Mason's teaching me and Xander how to use a lot of different distance weapons. Once the baby's born, the Slayer compulsion to hunt will come back and I won't have any choice but to hunt. Destroying them from a distance will give me more of a chance to see my baby grow up.'
'If you know me as much as you say you do,' Xena hesitated a moment and then said softly. 'Does that mean you know about -.'
'Solan.' Faith finished. 'His heart knows you love him.'
'Thank you for that.' Xena murmured as she eased around the house, following the danger sense. 'I pray you're right. Gabrielle said she understood why I gave him up, but sometimes I wonder if I did the right thing. Yes, he's loved by his adopted father and people, but he's my son. He's a part of me.'
'His safety had to come first. Believe me I understand that, Xena. Being what I am means my child could be in danger simply because a Slayer is her mother. But even after I die, she will have people who love her and will fight to keep her safe, whatever the cost to themselves. It's the same with the people taking care of Solan. They love him and would give their lives for him. And yes, he's safer with them. Your pain is unending, but it ensures he's safe and loved and that's more important.'
'You're right and it's my choices that made giving him up a necessity. But you didn't chose to be a Slayer, did you?'
'Some believe the gods made the Slayer line and choose the Slayers. It's considered an honor to be humanity's defender. Mason says humanity can defend itself and he's right, so I can't really explain Slayers, but you're right, it wasn't my choice. But I'm doing the best I can.'
'As long as you're aware of that and you make more good choices then bad, than you're right, you are doing the best you can. I think I see our demon, do you recognize it?'
'Reptile demon of some kind, but no, not specifically and it's heading toward that house. Demons, unlike vampires, can get into people's homes without an invitation. And it's not a child transformed, but may be an adult transformed. I say we err on the side of caution.'
'So do I.' Xena didn't hesitate and the chakram flew nearly silently, slicing through the demon's throat and spraying blackish blood. Xena snatched the chakram out of the air as it made its return flight and turned back to reclaim her seat on Ceridian's back as the demon finished gasping its life out.
