Chapter 2: Serena
The air outside was cool, with the promise of a late spring rain. Finn found himself walking beside Rachel down the familiar streets of Lima, a sense of ease growing between them, though the heaviness from years apart still lingered. It felt surreal—meeting up after so long, as if they were slipping into a moment frozen in time, but with a few changes, a few things missing and others in their place.
"So, what's been going on in your life?" Finn asked, glancing sideways at Rachel as they walked.
She gave him a small, almost wistful smile. "Well… I have a daughter now."
Finn stopped, his feet heavy on the pavement. "You have a… daughter?" The words felt like they didn't quite fit, like there was a gap in his understanding. The Rachel he knew had always been the one with dreams of Broadway, the girl who lived for applause, not for bedtime stories or diaper changes.
Rachel laughed softly, as though she could read his thoughts. "I know, it's a bit of a shock. But it happened. Life happened." Her smile softened. "Her name's Serena. She's four now."
"A four-year-old?" Finn echoed, trying to adjust. "I… wow. I didn't even know. I mean, we didn't exactly stay in touch."
Rachel's expression turned bittersweet, and she nodded. "I didn't expect you to, Finn. I didn't want to drag anyone into my life at the time. It's been complicated, you know?"
"I understand," Finn said, his voice quiet. He could hear the weight in her words, the things she hadn't said. "So, is Serena… with you now?"
Rachel nodded. "Yeah, she's with me. Always. She's… amazing, Finn." Her face lit up as she spoke, and Finn could see the pride and love in her eyes. He hadn't seen Rachel this soft in years, and for a moment, it was as if he was seeing a side of her he'd never truly understood.
"Can I meet her?" Finn asked, the question slipping out before he thought better of it.
Rachel paused, looking at him carefully, as if weighing the decision. Finally, she gave a small nod. "Yeah, I think she'd like that."
They reached the small, modest house Rachel had rented near the edge of town. It was cozy, with a white picket fence and a garden blooming with flowers, the kind of home that felt warm and lived-in. As they walked up to the front door, Rachel seemed a little nervous, almost unsure of what to expect. Finn understood—meeting her daughter, this piece of Rachel he'd never known, was a big step.
Rachel knocked softly on the door, then opened it with a quiet "Serena, sweetheart, it's me!"
From the inside, a voice echoed through the house. "Mom! Is it time to go outside?"
Rachel smiled, stepping into the doorway. "Not yet, honey, but we have a guest. Finn, come on in."
Finn followed her into the living room, his eyes scanning the space. It was a blend of soft, comforting chaos—crayons scattered on the coffee table, a few toys tucked into corners, and a child's laughter that filled the air. A small figure appeared in the doorway, a girl with wide brown eyes, dark hair in a messy ponytail, and a princess dress that was slightly too big for her.
"Hi!" she said, her voice bright and confident. "I'm Serena."
Finn crouched down to her level, smiling warmly. "Hi, Serena. It's nice to meet you."
Serena tilted her head, studying him for a moment before she walked up to him, her little hands on her hips. "You look like a superhero," she declared, her serious expression softening into a grin.
"Do I?" Finn chuckled, taken aback by her boldness. "I'll take that as a compliment."
Serena giggled and then looked at Rachel. "Is he going to play with me?"
Rachel laughed, the sound light and genuine. "We'll see, sweetheart. But first, let's let Finn get settled. He's not used to four-year-olds demanding superhero playtime just yet."
Finn grinned at Rachel, the same fondness he had always felt for her returning with full force. She was a mother now—strong, independent, and full of love in a way that he couldn't quite comprehend but admired deeply.
Serena tugged at his hand, pulling him toward a corner of the room where a pile of stuffed animals and dolls lay. "Come on, Mr. Superhero! I need a sidekick!"
Finn stood up and followed her, his heart full in a way he hadn't expected. Watching Rachel with Serena made something inside him shift. There was a tenderness in the way Rachel guided her daughter, a nurturing care that made Finn realize just how much she had grown. It wasn't just about the Broadway dreams anymore. It was about building a life—about teaching a little girl how to dream, how to love, how to be strong.
As Serena showed him her toys, Finn couldn't help but glance at Rachel. She was standing in the doorway, watching them with that quiet pride in her eyes, her arms crossed but her face full of warmth.
In that moment, Finn felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude. He hadn't expected to find this—the person Rachel had become, the family she had created—but here it was. A glimpse into a new chapter of her life, and maybe even his own.
"Do you want to help me with this?" Serena asked, holding up a toy car for Finn to take.
"Sure thing, kiddo," Finn replied, settling down beside her on the floor. And as he did, he realized something he hadn't understood before—that this was part of Rachel's journey, a new beginning in a world he hadn't been a part of, but now had a chance to be.
