Night Patrol
In Ray and Allison's home, Ray was getting ready for patrol putting on a heavy coat and dusting his pants. Allison looked him over. Ray then put on his boots and turned towards his girlfriend.
"How do I look?" He asked.
"Like you're ready to brave a storm." She answered.
Ray smiled. "That's the idea."
He and his girlfriend hugged and gave each other a peck on the lips. "Be careful." She told him.
"I will." He said to her before placing his right hand on her stomach. "For both of you."
In Rachel and Eve's house, Rachel was finished getting dressed for the weather while Eve was making some hot chocolate on the stove. Rachel walked over to her girlfriend and kissed her on the right cheek where her scar was.
"Hot chocolate is almost done." Eve told her before giving her a kiss on the forehead.
Eve looked down at the hot chocolate to see that it was done. She took two thermoses and poured the hot chocolate in. She then handed both to Rache. The two shared a tender kiss.
"May she guide you." Eve said.
"To you as well." Rachel said as Eve opened the front door for her.
The two shared a quick kiss before Rachel left the house. She walked to the stables. When she got there, she found Ray getting his horse.
Rachel approached her brother and used one of the thermos to tap him on the shoulder. He jumped slightly at the contact turning around to see his sister offering him the thermos with hot chocolate. "Thanks."
"You're welcome." Rachel said. "But I didn't make it."
"Then, I will have to thank Eve when she and Jesse relieve us."
Rachel sighed in worry. "Those in charge of the weather station have said that there is a blizzard forming."
Ray patted his sister in the back sympathetically. "She will be fine, your girlfriend can lift a runner by the neck with one hand, I think she can take on a blizzard."
His sister was not amused. "Blizzards are more deadly than a single runner."
"True but she is the toughest person in Jackson."
"I know, but we still worry about each other, especially during the winter."
"Hey Rachel! I got your horse ready for ya." A stable hand shouted.
"Thanks Peat!" She shouted.
Rachel got her horse with Ray behind her walking with his horse. The two the walked towards the gate. The guards at the gate see them.
"We're opening the gate for the general's kids." The one at the gate shouted to the one on the wall.
"Go on ahead it's all clear." The guard on the wall shouted.
The twins got on their horses as the gate opened. When the gate was fully opened, they rode out of Jackson and headed for the first checkpoint.
The journey was quite. There were no infected, but there was no conversation either. Rachel saw that her brother was holding his reigns tightly and was moving his head from side to side.
Rachel waited five minutes for Ray to say something before she couldn't take it anymore. "Okay bro, what's on your mind?"
Ray blinked in confusion. "What…"
Rolling her eyes, Rachel continued. "You look stressed."
"I'm not stressed!" He said defensively.
"Uh huh." she said sarcastically. "And I'm into Seth."
Ray chuckled. "I guess I'm a little nervous."
"About the baby?" Rachel guessed.
"Yeah." Ray confirmed.
His sister motioned for her brother to expand. "I'm scared that I'm not going to be a good dad."
Before he could reply, the twins reached the first checkpoint, a small one-bedroom house. They open the door and check the area for anything out of the ordinary. Finding none, Ray goes to the logbook to write a short report.
After taking a couple of minutes to rest, they headed back outside to their horses. They got back on their horses and started riding towards the next checkpoint. On their way there they encounter three runners that were easily dispatched.
They made it to the next check point that was once a coffee shop. Rachel wrote in the logbook about their encounters with the runners. The two then made their way to the next checkpoint with no encounters with the infected. Ray wrote in the logbook before they headed for the next checkpoint, a ski lodge.
"Alright, let's go through the resort for signs of infected and make a report then head to the next checkpoint I think the wind is starting to pick up." Ray said.
"You got it bro."
The two started walking through the resort checking every room for signs of infection. Not finding any signs of them, they entered a common room for staff.
"You wanna take a break?" Rachel asked.
"Sure, I want to wait a bit before checking the outside." he said as the wind started howling.
The two pulled out chairs and sat around a dusty table. Rachel noticed that her brother was still nervous, so she decided to cut the tension. "You're going to be a good dad."
Ray looked at his sister. "And when you need help you got your future in-laws and dad."
Rachel then grinned widely. "And your baby will have two cool aunts that will spoil her and undermine your authoritah."
The brother chuckled, while Rachel boomed with laughter. Ray looked at his sister in an unserious glare. "You will respect my authoritah!"
The sister laughed harder, falling out of her chair, causing Ray to laugh. They spent a few minutes laughing before something caught their attention. Looking at each they heard a horde of infected approaching the resort.
"Is that…?" Ray started to ask but the noises got louder and louder.
Rachel quickly stood up and ran outside to see a horde slam into the fence trying to grab at a girl squeezing in between the fence and a wall. She quickly made her way to the other side and ran towards them as a runner got on top of her. Rachel acted quickly and shot the runner's head. She then pulled the girl up and turned her around so that she was facing Rachel.
"You alright?" Rachel asked quickly.
The girl nodded. "Good, let's get out of here."
Rachel ran inside, the girl following close behind her. Ray saw his sister running back with a stranger following her. "Run bro."
He finally noticed the horde chasing them. "This way!"
The women entered the building. Ray shut the door and used a chair to jam the door. "You got a gun?" He asked the girl.
"Yeah." She answered.
"Good because we are going to need as much fire power we can get."
The three were about to enter a room, the door was shoved opened by a group of charging infected. They turned left in the hope of getting away. They pass another set of doors.
Quickly closing it, they barricade it to stall them for some time. "Okay, now what?" Ray asked.
Rachel looked around to see that they were in the base of a ski lift. She found an open window 12 feet above the ground and then found a cart that could be used to get them up to the window.
"Ray get that cart over to the window." Rachel ordered before turning to the girl. "What's your name?"
"Abby."
"Abby, I'm Rachel and that's my brother Ray." She quickly introduced. "Listen I need your help keeping any infected away from my brother while he pushes the cart."
"Right." Abby said.
The two defended Ray as he moved the cart to the window. 4 runners and a clicker managed to climb in but were delt with. He got the cart under the window.
"Through here." He shouted.
Abby and Rachel climbed up and through the window, Ray followed close behind. The three ran toward the lodge. They heard the hoard following them. They enter the lodge and fortify the door. The three pant and try to catch their breath.
"We need to get back to Jackson and get an extermination team together." Ray said as the door was being pounded.
"The horses won't make it in this storm." Rachel told him.
"My friends!" Abby explained as the door started to give way. "My friends and I cleared out a mansion not far from here."
"The Baldwin estate." Ray said.
"It will have to do." Rachel said as a door further away was slammed open by a runner.
Ray and Rachel got on their horses with Abby riding with Rachel. The horses bolted out of the lodge just as the fortified door came apart. Abby fired at the infected as they made their way through the storm.
