CHAPTER 012 – IZUKU AND ERI
XXXXXXXXXX Tuesday Late Afternoon XXXXXXXXXX
"So, do you think she liked it?"
"I'm pretty sure she did sweetie or she wouldn't have eaten it so fast."
"You have a point." Looking at the small girl cuddled up sleeping against his side, Izuku smiled a little as he gently rubbed her back soothingly. "Maybe it'll be one of her favorites like mine after all."
Inko chuckled. "You're bad enough, but her too?"
"You can't blame us Mom. It tastes too good. Especially when you make it," he said quietly while keeping his gaze on the little girl.
"Not that good but to each their own," replied back Inko though she was happy that he still loved her cooking. A knowing look came over her at what she was seeing. "So, are you attached yet?"
Rubbing the back of his head with his free hand while chuckling, Izuku turned a little red as he looked at his mom. "Yeah, I guess I am. It's gonna be hard letting her go back to her family when we find them. I just hope she lives a better life now."
"I see. Well, speaking about that, I have some news."
"You do?"
Inko nodded. "Yes. Toshinori said that they've been looking into finding some information about Eri. So far they found nothing. No family. No missing person's report that matches her. No last name either."
"What?!" Izuku's surprised burst made Eri shift a little against him. Looking at her with worry that he might've woke her up, he was relieved that she continued sleeping after a moment. Letting out a sigh, he turned back to his mom. "They really found nothing?" he asked in a quieter voice.
"Yes Izuku. Nothing."
"Then, what does that mean? What'll happen to Eri?" asked Izuku with concern.
"Well, from what I've learned from Toshi, normally someone in her position and age would be sent to an orphanage or assigned to a caretaker."
She was about to say more when Izuku unintentionally interrupted her. "Oh, right. That makes sense." Looking at the sleeping girl again, he started speaking in a low tone of voice. "I was thinking that until we found her family, I kind of wanted her to come live with us…"
Inko was a little surprised that he just admitted that out loud without hesitation. "Did you now?"
"Well, yeah. Plus, I did promise her that I'll do all I can for her," said Izuku with a slight defiant tone of voice.
Inko chuckled a little that drew her son's attention. "In that case, we can't back out of it now."
"What do you mean?" he asked in confusion.
"Well, before you woke up suddenly, I had spoken with Toshi and Chiyo about what'll happen to Eri. And after finding out they couldn't find anyone related to her so far, they asked if I wanted to take her in. I said I would as long as you and Eri wanted it too," explained Inko.
Izuku's eyes widened. "Seriously?!" he asked in a whisper and his mom nodded with a happy look on her face. "Of course I'd like that! I mean, I'm more than happy to do that. I just hope I'm not being selfish for bringing more trouble for you, Mom. I know that we're kind of struggling a little…"
"Nonsense," interrupted Inko, waving her right hand as if to say don't worry about it. "I wanna take her in too. Plus, we have support from UA and the number one hero. All we need is for Eri to say she wants it too."
"Wow, really? They'll help us too?" asked Izuku and Inko nodded again with a large smile on her face. Izuku couldn't help but smile widely too before looking at Eri again. "I hope she does." A sudden thought entered his head then. "Wait, what about me going to UA?" he asked as he faced his mom again. "How's that gonna work?"
Before Inko could respond, the hospital room door opened and a small group of people walked in that caught their attention. Before anyone could say anything, one from the group shot to the green haired young man the moment her eyes landed on him.
"My precious little cinnamon roll!"
"H-Hi to you t-too…Midnight S-Sensei," mumbled a crimson Izuku since she had pressed his face into her chest. He did his best to survive her bone crushing hug while at the same time protecting Eri and covering her ears so she wouldn't be woken up.
"Oh, how many times do I have to tell you, call me Nemuri. Or better yet, call me-"
"I believe that's enough for now," interrupted Nezu.
Nemuri looked at him with a glare but the principal wasn't intimidated in the slightest. Instead, he gave a rather eerie smirk that made Nemuri second guess her retort. "Oh alright fine." Nemuri looked back at Izuku and gave him a seductive smile. "But I'm getting my cuddling in later and I'll make you feel better too." Separating from Izuku who was still looking like a strawberry, Nemuri gave him a wink before she moved away and just noticed Inko. "Oh, hey Inko. My, you're looking rather flustered. You alright?" she asked with a smirk since she already knew the reason why.
Inko was indeed flustered with a reddened face at seeing what just happened. Even with seeing it many times before in the last couple of months during her son's training, she could never fully get used to it. Especially in the beginning during the first time Nemuri did one of her overly affectionate displays. Inko at first had a mad fear that her son was being preyed upon by some older, seducing dominatrix of a woman who wanted to use him for her own selfish desires. Inko didn't care that it was part of Nemuri's hero persona to distract villains in order to capture or stop them.
But luckily, Inko was mistaken and learned that Nemuri would never force anyone or do anything to anyone who didn't want to be a part of her…fun time or play time…as the heroine would call it. Whether it be teasing or something more serious. She also learned that Nemuri was overly affectionate only to the ones she truly cared about and that she loved being a tease from both the principal of UA and the number one hero.
Because of their vouching for her, Inko knew that Nemuri meant no harm to her son and wouldn't try anything on him. And it also had nothing to do with the talk that Inko had with the heroine after a few training sessions and practically put the fear of God into her. That if she did anything to hurt or corrupt Izuku, she would deal with a mother's wrath. No, it wasn't that at all. But it was enough to make Nemuri promise she wouldn't do anything of the sort out of fear and respect for the Midoriya matriarch.
All in all, Inko was no longer worried about Nemuri and she did allow her to continue her teasing ways but only to a certain extent. And that extent was she could do her teasing antics only in a way where it would help Izuku become more comfortable around other women. Even if it was a little inappropriate.
"Yes, I am Nemuri," answered Inko as calmly as she could to hide her flustered state. Just because she was okay with it, didn't mean she was used to it. Seeing the smirk on Nemuri's face, Inko turned away towards the others who entered the room. "Principal Nezu. Chiyo. Toshi. Thank you so much for coming to visit."
"Yeah, thanks for coming to see me. And I'm sorry for what happened," said Izuku quietly.
"Of course we came to see you my boy," replied Toshinori. "And don't even think it was your fault. If anything, it was mine for not getting there sooner," he added as he walked closer to them with Nezu on his shoulder.
"N-No, I shouldn't have just gotten involved like that without a plan or anything and making you all worry," retorted Izuku.
"Are you saying that you should've left Eri with that monster?" questioned Toshinori.
"Of course not!" shot Izuku while still covering Eri's ears. He looked at her while he spoke. "I don't regret helping her. I just regret not doing enough and making things complicated…"
Understanding him but knowing he shouldn't dwell on that, Toshinori spoke up again. "You did nothing wrong and having nothing to regret my boy. You took proper precautions by contacting me, kept your distance and only got involved to protect someone. You did all that well. And I took care of everything and it ended on a good enough note. Eri is safe. That monster is awaiting trial and you're awake and recovering without issue. That's all that matters," said Toshinori with a smile.
"He's right. So don't worry about it," said Nemuri as she placed a hand on Izuku's shoulder.
Smiling a little, Izuku nodded before turning to face them all. "Thank you everyone."
"You're welcome. Just be more careful from now on," requested Toshinori and Izuku nodded. "Good. Now, we also have some news for you regarding UA as well as Eri's predicament."
Glancing at one another, Inko and Izuku couldn't help but think and feel multiple things. Until they both nodded in silent agreement that they would face it together. Looking at the two expectedly, they remained quiet while waiting for them to explain.
And they did. "So, we have several things to discuss," started Toshinori. "So far, we found no possible relatives to Eri but we'll continue to search."
"Regarding her quirk…" spoke up Chiyo, making them all look at her now. "…we've come up with several theories thanks to the tests done by myself, Nezu and your input Izuku. So far, we believe that Eri's quirk deals with her horn and that it involves some sort of changing the state of something. And since her horn is actually smaller now than when she first came in and she displayed some sort of energy during her episodes, we think that she stores energy over time that causes her horn to grow and when she's stored enough energy, she can use it. We're still in the middle of experimenting with that and the blood tests but the results are inconclusive," she explained.
"I already have some theories based on what we've learned as of now and from what Chiyo has informed me. Once I get enough information in the near future hopefully, I'll let you know. For now, I will say to keep an eye on her horn size. If it gets large again, give her some distance and contact us so we can send help since we don't know what her quirk does. In the future, the best way to understand her quirk and have her eventually control it, would be to have her use it," stated Nezu and everyone had concerned looks form on their faces. He hopped down onto the nearby food table and walked towards Izuku while holding his paws behind him. "Now, that doesn't mean that we'll force her. Especially now since she's gonna have to get used to her new living arrangements first."
"Yeah, Mom told me that both you and All Might want to help with that," remarked Izuku happily.
Toshinori smiled and so did Nezu. "Of course. I'll gladly help any way I can, whether it's financials or other things."
"And don't worry about UA. I've already filled out the required documents and once you're both ready, Eri can move in with you at the dorms. That is, if she decides to stay with you," revealed Nezu.
"Really? That won't be an issue?" asked Izuku in surprise.
"Nezu has a lot of pull in a lot of areas. It's best to just go with the flow on these kinds of things," explained Nemuri with a shrug.
Nezu had that eerie grin form on his face and Izuku chuckled awkwardly for a second. He decided to move the conversation along since he had a question he's wanted to ask for a while now. "So, I'm still in UA then? And how are the dorms and when can I move in?"
"Of course you're still in UA!" answered Toshinori at once, making Izuku smile.
"And as soon as I give the go ahead," answered Chiyo rather sternly and Izuku's smile faded slightly as he gulped before nodding.
"Your classmates will move into the dorms on Friday and the rooms have already been pre-selected for everyone," informed Nezu and Izuku turned towards the white hybrid animal. "You'll find out more information about the dorms later when you finally get there. But I will say that your room will be one of two depending on what Eri decides. I won't say much but I will say this; I think the second choice will be very beneficial if Eri decides to stay with you since it'll help out with things regarding her in the future," finished Nezu in a rather cheerily tone of voice.
Toshinori, Nemuri, Chiyo and even Inko all felt a chill go down their spine after Nezu finished saying that but to the oblivious Izuku, he merely smiled widely. "If she does want to stay and if it'll help Eri out later on, then that's all that matters to me. Thanks Principal Nezu!"
Nezu's smile turned into a wide grin. "You're welcome Izuku. Now, I must get back to UA. I hope to see you at school sooner rather than later. Oh and please let me know as soon as possible about Eri's decision."
"Wait, there's something else I need to talk to you about sir," spoke up Izuku, catching everyone's attention.
"Yes?" prodded Nezu as he waited on the table.
Glancing at Nemuri, Izuku then looked at Toshinori. "Um, it's something I need to talk to you and All Might about," said Izuku, trying to make them understand what it's regarding. Seeing them not getting it or not saying anything at all, Izuku let out a sigh. "It's about my quirk."
"Oh," said several together at once. Toshinori spoke up for everyone afterwards. "Well don't worry about it. Everyone here knows," said Toshinori. To prove his point, he transformed into his muscular form and All Might stood there for a moment before shrinking back down to his skeletal form.
"You know?!" asked Izuku in shock towards Nemuri.
Huffing slightly, Nemuri crossed her arms under her chest and used them to raise her breasts higher that made Izuku blush slightly and Inko to glare. "I found out recently and I'm not happy with you that you kept that secret from me. You're supposed to be my precious and innocent cinnamon roll. You're not supposed to keep secrets from me," she whined with a pout.
"B-B-B-But…"
Letting out an exaggerated sigh, Nemuri locked her eyes with Izuku. "It's fine. I'll just punish you for it later." A teasing glint in her eyes was seen as she licked her lips that made Izuku turn crimson and sputter again.
A rolled up newspaper was suddenly seen floating above Nemuri's head before it came crashing down on top of her head. "What the hell?!" yelped Nemuri, messaging and protecting her head while eyeing the newspaper that was on the floor now.
"I suggest we get back on track before a far heavier thing suddenly drops on us," suggested Inko with a rather vindictive smile on her face that seemed to make everyone, Nezu included, have goose bumps.
Nemuri said nothing but nodded quietly. Okay, note to self; don't piss off Inko too much. She scares me…
"Ah yes, we've gotten off track. So, Izuku, what did you want to tell us?" asked Nezu.
Stunned for a moment over what his mom just did, it took Izuku a moment to snap out of it before facing Nezu and Toshinori. "Okay. Um…while I was…out…I saw something…like a dream…but it wasn't…"
"What do you mean, sweetie?" asked Inko worriedly.
"Well…" Izuku started explaining to everyone there about what he experienced. Waking up in darkness at first. The glowing balls of light that represented each of the previous holders. Talking to the previous holders. What they told him about One For All evolving, adapting to his will and how he would end up receiving more quirks from the previous users in the future. How they would be with him from now on and everything else.
"Are…Are you serious?" asked Nemuri in astonishment. Sure, she's heard and seen many different and bizarre quirks during her career as a pro hero. But this was something else entirely.
"And…and are they…bothering you or hurting you in any way?" asked Inko with concern. She didn't want her son to suffer from his predecessor's souls messing with his mind.
"Yeah, I am Midnight Sensei. And no, Mom. In fact, they seemed like they just wanted to help. They said they'll watch over me and try to contact me whenever they can to give me advice," explained Izuku and both women gave the young man concerned looks.
Chiyo looked at the floor and shook her head slowly. Damn it. Of course things have to get more complicated with you and One For All. I'm getting too old for this. I wish we had more healers and I can take a break from all this…
"Hmm, this is rather interesting," commented Nezu as he raised his paw to his chin as he thought out loud. "To think that One For All is evolving and the previous holders are able to communicate with you. Fascinating."
"Yeah. It's kind of overwhelming. And they were all so cool even though I only talked to a few of them," admitted Izuku. Suddenly remembering something, Izuku turned his gaze towards Toshinori. "Oh, I almost forgot. Nana had a message for you."
Toshinori was quiet during the entire time his successor was explaining things and was feeling many different things. But when he said that, he felt his heart skip a beat. "S-She…did? What w-was it?" asked Toshinori in a whisper, making Inko look at him with concern.
"Yeah. She said this." Izuku cleared his throat and repeated what he was told. ["Tell Toshi I'm sorry for pushing him away in the end. Tell him that he was everything to me after giving up my family. Tell him that I loved him."]
"Master…" Toshinori couldn't help it anymore. Tears escaped from his eyes and his breath hitched a few times. Realizing that he was about to start crying, the number one hero wiped away his tears as quickly as they leaked out and did his best to control himself.
Seeing him so made the others in the room become a bit sullen but knew that he appreciated hearing that. As sullen as she felt, Inko still felt glad that her friend was able to hear something so sweet from his mentor.
Izuku though, had a hard time seeing his mentor and favorite hero in such a state. "I'm sorry. I…"
"No, no," interrupted Toshinori as he pulled himself together and wiped off the last few tears from his face and looked his successor in the eyes. "You did nothing wrong Izuku. In fact, thank you for relaying her message to me. It means a lot to me and I appreciate it very much. So don't worry about it my boy." Both he and Izuku smiled a bit and so did the rest who were awake in the room.
Nezu cleared his throat. "So, getting back on topic," he began and when everyone looked at him, he continued. "Izuku, you said that you'll eventually get their quirks in time. What of the quirk you used to apprehend Overhaul?" The confused look on Izuku made Nezu clarify. "The Yakuza leader you stopped…his name is Kai Chisaki but goes by his quirk name, Overhaul. And the black energy tendrils that you released. Did you get a name for it from the previous holders and can you use it again now?"
Understanding dawning on him, Izuku let out an 'oh' before explaining what he was told. "The quirk is called Blackwhip and its from the fifth holder whose name was Daigoro Banjo. And I…I don't know if I can. I can try to bring it out."
"Should he be trying this now?" asked Inko with worry.
"She's right. He's still recovering," chimed in Chiyo.
"True. However, the sooner Izuku learns to control the quirks the better. Plus, I'm only asking if he can use it at the moment," reasoned Nezu, earning himself a worried look from Inko, curious looks from Nemuri and Toshinori while Chiyo made an annoyed sound.
"Well, I don't know how to bring it out," remarked Izuku. "It all happened so fast."
"How about remembering what you felt when it manifested?" suggested Nezu.
"Okay."
Everyone quieted down to allow Izuku to focus. Raising his right hand with his palm open towards the ceiling, Izuku concentrated on what he felt when he first used Blackwhip. A short time went by with nothing happening yet he continued trying to manifest it as he remembered. How Eri was being taken away by the Yakuza leader Overhaul. All the different emotions he was experiencing at that moment. And how that led to the final thoughts he had before losing consciousness thanks to his severe injury. How he couldn't let Eri be taken away from such a horrible person and how he wanted to reach her somehow…
*THWIP*
Several thin black tendrils of energy shot out from his palm towards the ceiling and struck it while narrowly avoiding the lamps.
"Aaahh!"
"Izuku!"
"Turn it off!"
"Watch out!"
"Fascinating!"
"Izu! Why's everyone screaming?! I'm scared!" Being woken up by everyone's yelling, Eri felt fear fill her completely. She immediately hugged her savoir and buried her face into his chest while shaking.
"Eri! It's okay! Everything's fine!" replied Izuku as softly as he could while still feeling some pain from Blackwhip.
Using his left hand, he hugged Eri while the others in the room calmed down so they wouldn't cause more distress for the young girl. Though they were worried about Izuku, they kept quiet and waited for him to calm down the girl seeing how she was only 'seeing' him at the moment. It took a little bit until Eri's shivering lessened thanks to Izuku rubbing her back comfortably.
Noticing that, Izuku spoke again. "There you go Eri-chan. Everything's okay. I'm sorry we just woke you up like that. I was talking with family and friends before testing my quirk. Now that I think about it, it was a bad idea to do it now. We should've waited. I'm sorry Eri-chan. Please forgive me and don't worry since everything's alright." He focused on her completely and the pain he was feeling from Blackwhip slowly subsided while he did so.
Hearing her hero say that, Eri calmed down enough and she slowly raised her face from his chest. Looking to the side, she saw two completely new faces along with his mom, the old nurse and the blonde skinny man. And then she noticed Izuku's hand with the black energy tendrils. Her eyes widening, she raised her gaze to follow its trail and found them attached to the ceiling and unmoving.
Toshinori, Nemuri, Chiyo, Nezu and Inko were ready to jump in and do something if things went crazy again. When Blackwhip first appeared, it caught them all off guard, not expecting Izuku to be able to have it manifest. And when they heard the painful cry from the young man, they couldn't think of anything to make it go away without somehow hurting Izuku in the process. But when Eri woke up in fright, they and Izuku focused on her. Though they did keep glancing at the still manifested tendrils and wondered why they weren't moving.
Seeing her so mesmerized by it, Izuku glanced at the others and quickly told them he was okay before looking at Eri again. "I'm sorry Eri. I-I know it's probably scary to see it and you don't want to see it…"
"N-No," said Eri without moving her sight away from them.
"Huh?" It wasn't just Izuku who said that but also Inko and Nemuri but it was the young man who asked the following question for them all. "What do you mean Eri?"
"You…saved me…with the black lines…and…they stopped…the bad man," whispered Eri, making them understand. Sitting up on his lap, Eri then raised her right hand towards it slowly.
Izuku was about to say something when he caught Nezu signaling to him from his peripheral vision. Looking at him directly, the principal of UA shook his head slightly and Izuku understood. Bringing his attention back to Eri, he watched her reach for the energy tendrils. As he did so, he missed Nezu quickly letting the others know to not get involved unless absolutely necessary.
Eri was slowly getting her hand closer to one of the black lines near her. Seeing it again made her remember the first time she saw them just a few days ago. How her hero used an incredible power that let him reach for her even when she was so far away from him. How it separated the bad man from her and how it caught him. How it punished the bad man while leaving her alone. How it seemed to stay in front of her like some sort of protective cover even as it thrashed around everywhere else.
When she was about an inch away from touching it, Eri hesitated. Pulling her hand back a bit, she glanced at Izuku. He was giving her a comforting smile and Eri drew strength from it. Facing towards it again, Eri moved her hand to the black line and touched it with her finger tips.
Letting out a short gasp, everyone there became concerned but before they could say or do anything, Eri spoke. "Warm…" remarked the little girl before putting her whole hand against it.
When she touched it, Izuku faintly felt it. And the negative emotions that he used to manifest Blackwhip were already fading but now they were completely gone. What he felt now instead was comfort, warmth and hope. He wondered if it was due to Eri touching it and somehow sensing her feelings. But he wasn't complaining since he'd rather feel that than the initial feelings when he first summoned Blackwhip. He did make a mental note to think about that later though.
Izuku thought that perhaps he should recall most of his quirk and Blackwhip reacted as if reading his mind. It detached from the ceiling and began retracting back into Izuku while not hurting Eri in any way. It startled them all but they quickly realized that nothing was amiss. They shortened down until they were dancing lightly in Izuku's palm. Eri moved her hand towards them and they lightly grazed against her hand. She let out another gasp but didn't remove her hand as the tendrils caressed her hand gently. "What is this?" she asked with her gaze still on it.
Izuku glanced at the others in the room with an expression that signified he needed help. The principal of UA stepped up. "Izuku's quirk is Aura, which allows him to use the energy he collects over time to use in different ways," chimed in Nezu, making Eri and the rest look at him. "Those black energy tendrils caressing your hand right now are a new move he's been working on. He named it Blackwhip and he was able to use it to help save you Eri."
"Black…whip?" repeated Eri and Nezu nodded. Turning to look at Izuku, she removed her hand from the black lines and then hugged him tightly again. "Thank you Izu for saving me with your new move."
Glad to hear her say that, Izuku returned the hug with the tendrils regressing back into his palm. "You're welcome Eri-chan."
"Ah, so adorable and precious!" commented Nemuri with her palms against her cheeks and squirming in place. Inko couldn't help but agree and smiled along with Nezu, Toshinori and Chiyo.
They gave the two a moment until Nezu cleared his throat loudly that caught their attention. "Well, as much as I'd like to let you two be adorable all day, there's a little bit of business we need to take care of." Izuku nodded while Eri felt a little frightened from hearing those words. "Since little Eri is awake, we might as well ask her," reminded the hybrid animal.
"Oh, that's right." Izuku looked at Eri who looked at him. "Eri-chan…I have something to ask you. I want to know if you'll be okay with this. Do…Do you want to come live with me and my Mom?"
Eri's eyes widened and she took in a sharp breath. She couldn't believe it. For one, no one ever asked her if she wanted to do anything or if it was okay for them to do something with her in the past. And even though she was feeling comfort and safety with her hero and his mom, she didn't believe that it would last forever. She had constant thoughts that she would be forced to go away sooner or later. And when they promised her that they'd do all they could for her, a part of her still believed that it would end eventually.
So to hear him ask if she wanted to stay with them and actually live out her life with them was a surprise. And not just any surprise. But a happy and welcomed one at that. She was frozen for a moment before she answered loudly. "Yes! Please!" she replied back with an emotional tone while gripping his hospital gown tightly with her small hands.
Izuku smiled brightly at her answer. "Then that's that. You'll live with us from now on." Hearing him say that made the dam burst and Eri started crying out of sheer relief and gratitude as she started hugging him tightly. Izuku hugged her back and just let her cry a bit while rubbing her back gently to comfort her.
"Now that I have my answer in regarding that, I shall leave you now. I have business to attend to regarding your new dorm room options and other things," stated Nezu as he began making his way out of the room. "Take care Midoriya and I'll see you at UA."
"Thank you Principal Nezu for everything."
Waving his paw in response, Nezu left the room with his brain creating multiple plans that he must now implement and follow. After he left, Chiyo informed them that since Izuku was doing very well, she was gonna go check on her other patients and that she'll just come back in the morning. And if he continued his incredible recovery, he'd be discharged then. Glad to hear that, both Izuku and Inko thanked the elderly nurse and Inko invited her to come over for dinner one day. Thanking her and accepting the invitation, Chiyo left the room afterwards.
"You'll be going to UA sooner than thought possible," remarked Toshinori happily. "You excited for that my boy?" he asked.
"Yeah, I am," replied Izuku as he glanced at his mentor with a smile who smiled back. Returning his gaze back towards the girl on his lap, Izuku's smile widened. "And Eri-chan will be coming with us." Eri didn't say anything but snuggled closer against him.
"How sweet," commented Nemuri, seeing the way Izuku was looking at Eri. "You're so attached to her Izuku. Does someone feel like a parent?"
Blushing, Izuku snapped his attention to Nemuri while stuttering, making Nemuri burst out laughing. Even Inko and Toshinori couldn't help but chuckle a little themselves while Eri's eyes started closing again while wondering what that word 'parent' meant.
"Oh Izuku, you're just too much," said Nemuri in between her laughs. Calming down a little, she reached over towards him and ruffled his hair affectionately. "And don't worry, you can play parent and I can help you in doing so," she suggested with a seductive wink, making Izuku go crimson red.
"Okay, that's enough," shot Inko, stepping towards the blue haired woman. "I think Izuku has had a long enough day. It'll get dark soon and we should all let him rest so he can leave tomorrow."
"Yeah, you're right Inko," spoke up Toshinori, seeing one of her rare angry expressions. Stepping over to Nemuri, he hooked his arm through hers and pulled her aside while she let out a 'hey' in surprise. Ignoring her, Toshinori looked at Izuku who was facing him. "I know we didn't get to catch up much today but I'll be here tomorrow morning and we can do that then, especially about you know what that I'll start looking into. I'm just super happy that you're awake and well my boy."
"Thank you. For everything," said Izuku before looking at Nemuri. "And thank you too for coming to see me."
"Of course I did! You're my precious and innocent cinnamon roll! I'd even happily stay by your side and attend to all of your needs even if it means-"
"Okay, have a goodnight Izuku," interrupted Toshinori, sensing that Nemuri was gonna cross a line that would really piss off Inko. He dragged the blue haired woman with him as he left. "And goodnight to both of you as well, Inko and Eri."
"Hey, I don't wanna go just yet! But goodnight Inko darling! And you too sweet little Eri! I'll bring you both lots of gifts! And for my Izuku, I'll be the gi-" The rolled up paper that was on the floor suddenly shot through the air and into her mouth, preventing Nemuri from continuing.
"Thanks Inko," said Toshinori with a smile and Inko nodded with a rather vindictive look on her face. "Come on, let's go you trouble maker." Toshinori opened the door and left with a stunned silent Nemuri over what Inko just did to her.
"Wasn't that a bit much, Mom?" asked Izuku after they left.
Inko let out a sigh before turning towards him. "Maybe. But I did warn her not to go overboard. And trust me, that's still tame compared to what I would've really liked to do."
Feeling a shiver go down his spine, Izuku realized that his Mom could be rather…harsh…if need be. "I see." Looking at Eri, he watched her for a few seconds until he realized that she had fallen asleep again. "Hmm, I think Eri has the right idea."
"You're right. We should get some sleep," confirmed Inko as she too noticed how the silver haired girl was knocked out while leaning against his body. Taking out a blanket, Inko covered the two with it. She then started setting up her sleeping area on the couch underneath the curtained window.
"Mom, you know you can go home so you can sleep more comfortably," suggested Izuku.
Inko shook her head however as she finished setting up. "No way. I'm not leaving and I'm quite comfortable so don't you worry mister." Moving towards her son, Inko smiled at him before leaning over and kissed his forehead. "I'll always be by your side Izuku. No matter what."
"Thanks Mom. And I'll do my best to make you proud to call me your son," said Izuku.
Inko smiled as she placed her hand on top of his head. "You already have. Many times over." Seeing him smile brightly at her, Inko felt happy. Turning to look at the little girl, she adjusted the covers around her a little before going towards her sleeping area. Grabbing the remote on the nearby table, she pressed the button that dimmed the lights in the room and placed it back on the table. "Goodnight Izuku. And goodnight Eri," said Inko as she lied down on the couch and pulled the blanket over her shoulders.
"Goodnight Mom," said Izuku. Before closing his eyes, he made sure that Eri was comfortable and secure before allowing himself to sleep as well. Once sure of it, he relaxed a little and closed his eyes. "Goodnight Eri," whispered Izuku as he wrapped one arm around her. His action made her snuggle even closer against him in her sleep before she stopped moving. Not long after, the newly made family of three was asleep with the only sounds being their quiet breathing and rhythmic beeping of the hospital monitors.
XXXXXXXXXX Wednesday After Midnight XXXXXXXXXX
Murmuring a little bit while waking up, Eri slowly raised her head and sat up on the bed. Letting out a yawn, she rubbed her eyes and then looked towards the hospital room door. Not seeing anyone, she wondered where everyone was for a bit until she decided it didn't matter as long as she was with her hero. Turning her gaze behind her, she started speaking as she did so. "Izu, are you asle…"
She trailed off after noticing that Izuku wasn't there. Eri's eyes widened before looking around more carefully and saw that she was alone. "Izu?" she called out with her voice cracking and starting to feel afraid. "Izu?! W-Where are y-you?!" she asked in a high pitched whisper. "Izu!"
Immediately after her yelling, footsteps were heard outside the room she was in. Snapping her attention to the door as the footsteps stopped, she then saw the doorknob start to turn. Grabbing the blanket that was on the bed, she held it up against her small body as if it was a shield with fear growing inside of her. "Izu?" she said in a low tone of voice as the door opened.
"There is no Izu." A monotone voice was heard as someone else entered the room with his eyes narrowed onto hers.
Eri took in a startled breath. It was the bad man with the beak mask. Becoming completely filled with fear and hopelessness, Eri began shaking violently with tears escaping her eyes while unable to do anything else as the one who scared her beyond all else came closer to her. "No…no!" she cried.
"You've been a bad girl Eri. Because of you, I had to kill many people. It's all your fault because you're nothing but a curse," said the beak faced man.
"N-No! I-Izu said I w-wasn't a c-curse!" sobbed Eri while unable to look away or even attempt to make an escape.
"He lied. And because of you and your curse, he's dead. And so is his mom. And the old nurse. And the skinny blonde man. They're all dead. All because of you. You're a curse. A disease. And I'm the only one who can cure it. Now come back before you really make me angry!" said the beak faced man as he drew closer to her.
"No! P-Please!" Eri tried to move away but was frozen in her spot. All she could do was watch the bad man get closer to her.
"You're not listening. And now I have to punish you again," he said, removing his right hand's glove before extending it towards her.
Seeing the hand that was responsible for all of her pain and turmoil coming closer to her face made the young girl tremble uncontrollably as she started screaming. "NO! P-PLEASE!" Her begging went unheard and the hand was inches away. She closed her eyes and screamed the next word as loudly as she could. "IZUUU!"
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
"IZUUU!" screamed Eri as she woke up and began trembling violently.
Eri's sudden screaming woke up the other two inhabitants of the room she was in. Izuku and Inko snapped open their eyes and immediately turned their attention towards the little girl. They found her clutching onto the young man's hospital gown tightly while screaming and crying. Inko got off the couch and went towards the two on the hospital bed. Izuku sat up as quickly as he could while hugging the young girl and was doing all he could to calm her down.
"Eri, it's okay. I'm here Eri. Ssshhh, it's okay. I'm here. I'm here," said Izuku in as calm and comforting tone of voice he could muster while hugging her tightly.
"We're here Eri, it's okay," said Inko while rubbing her back gently.
As the two did their best to calm down the child, Eri kept crying. A little while later, Eri tried to talk. "B-Bad m-man…h-he kil…" she cried, stuttering in between her sobs.
"Ssshh, it's okay. It was just a nightmare. A bad dream. Don't worry. The bad man is in jail and he can never hurt you again."
"S-said…I…curse…I…you…hurt…dead…"
Inko withdrew her hand when she noticed Eri start shivering. Izuku hugged her tighter as he started to caress her head gently through her pale blue silver hair to help sooth her. "Sssh, it's okay. You won't hurt me. In fact, you helped me get better, remember? You're not a curse Eri. You're a blessing. So don't ever think that. And it was a just a bad dream. Sssshhh, its okay, Eri-chan." Slowly, Izuku's repeated words and actions seemed to help. Eri was starting to calm down as her sobbing became quieter and her shaking slowed.
Seeing that her son was able to handle things, Inko let out a sigh of relief and didn't get involved further. She didn't want to overwhelm the girl and since she was responding to Izuku more than her, she figured it would be better for him to do so.
Glad that Izuku was able to calm her down, Inko still wanted to help out in some way though. She decided that getting them all some good tea would help calm their nerves so they can try and go back to sleep. Letting her son know that she'll be right back, Inko left the hospital room to get some.
Izuku kept up his words and actions until Eri's crying and shaking almost completely stopped. She was sniveling and pressing her face into his chest so much that it was as if she was trying to merge with him. Letting out a short relieved sigh, Izuku focused on her again. "Eri-chan, are you okay?" he asked softly.
Eri shook her head slightly. "I…I'm s-scared."
"I know and it's okay. I won't let the bad man or anyone else hurt you. You're safe."
Eri was quiet for a few seconds until she said something else. "I…I'm scared…that you…will get hurt by me…and leave…"
He almost didn't catch what she said since she barely said those words in a whisper. But he understood. "Don't worry Eri-chan. You won't hurt me. I'm here and I will never leave you. No one will be able to make me leave you. And no one will ever hurt you again. You will never be forced to do something that hurts you or other people. I promised you didn't I? A hero keeps his promises. And you're gonna live with me and Mom remember? You're part of the family now. And family sticks together."
Silence in the room for a little while after Izuku said those words. Eri slowly raised her sight to look at her hero. "P-Promise?" she asked in a slightly high pitched whisper.
Izuku smiled softly at her. "Of course Eri-chan. I promised and I'll promise again." Seeing her puffy red eyes glistening with unshed tears while her cheeks had dried tear marks, Izuku felt his heart clench. He moved his hands slowly to her face so he wouldn't startle her and gently wiped away the tear marks with his thumbs.
When he finished, Eri leaned against his chest with her cheek and hugged him tightly. "Thank you, Izu."
"You're welcome, Eri."
Izuku leaned back against the bed's headboard after propping up the pillow behind him. He kept rubbing the little girl's back while humming a soothing song that his mother used to do for him whenever he had nightmares. Eri's eyes started to close and before she knew it, she fell asleep. Izuku noticed that but kept up his humming until the door opened. Seeing that his mother had returned with a tray and three cups, Izuku smiled as he let her know that Eri had fallen asleep.
"Poor thing," remarked Inko in a whisper. After putting the tea down, Inko went to the bed and raised the blanket to cover Eri's shoulders. She then carefully moved the girl's hair away from her face. "I hope she sleeps better this time."
"Me too."
Turning towards her son, Inko nodded. "I'm sorry I didn't get too involved but you did well Izuku. I'm proud of you."
"It's alright and it was probably better so she wouldn't get overwhelmed. And thanks Mom."
Smiling, Inko straightened and turned to grab a cup of tea. "Did you want yours now?" she asked.
"In a little bit."
"Alright. Just let me know when," replied Inko.
"Will do." Inko went back to the couch, sat down on it with her tea and started flipping through a magazine for a bit to keep herself occupied.
Thanks Mom, for everything. After thinking that, Izuku looked at Eri. He kept his sight on her as he thought about what he could do to help her overcome her trauma and fears…
XXXXXXXXXX Wednesday Mid Morning XXXXXXXXXX
"Thank you so much for the ride home, Toshi."
"You're welcome and of course! I'll always be happy to help."
Inko smiled at him before looking at her son. "I'm so glad to have you back home, Izuku."
"Yeah, it's good to be back, Mom," replied Izuku with a smile before looking at the little girl holding his hand and practically wrapped around his leg. She was looking at everything with wide eyes. "Welcome to your new home Eri-chan."
Eri looked up at Izuku. "R-Really?" she asked in a whisper.
Kneeling down so he could be eye level with her, Izuku looked Eri in the eyes before he replied back. "Really. This is your new home until you come to UA to stay with me."
Eri threw her arms around Izuku's neck and hugged him tightly with her eyes watering but thankfully no tears were shed. "T-Thank you Izu," she said quietly.
"You're welcome," said Izuku as he hugged her back. Toshinori and Inko glanced at each other with a smile before returning their sight back to the two.
They had just arrived back to the Midoriya residence after Izuku was finally discharged from the hospital a short while ago. Recovery Girl had kept her word and checked up on the young man early in the morning. Finding no concerning issues and seeing that Izuku was fit as a fiddle, Chiyo informed them that he could leave the hospital but rest for today and if not nothing comes up, he can attend UA tomorrow. Happy over hearing the news, Inko wasted no time in letting Toshinori know while Izuku changed out of his hospital gown with the clothes that his mother had brought earlier on in anticipation of this. Eri was also feeling some happiness because now she could go live with the one who had saved her and made her feel safe.
Toshinori had arrived soon after Inko contacted him and Nemuri had come with him as well. Shooting towards him the second she spotted him, Nemuri hugged him tightly while declaring many things. Izuku was turning crimson from having his face practically smothered between her breasts and hearing the somewhat inappropriate things from her.
Inko was about to use her quirk to make Nemuri release her son when she was beaten by Chiyo. The elderly nurse smacked her cane against the heroine's leg. Letting go of Izuku while yelping in pain, Nemuri was then chastised by both women. Laughing weakly, she apologized and promised to behave.
They conversed with one another and joked around a bit while waiting for the documents to be readied for Izuku to sign so he can be discharged. Right after he did so, Nemuri had to leave since her classes were about to start soon since it was barely the middle of the week. Hugging Izuku once more, she whispered a few choice words that made him turn crimson once more before she laughed and quickly left the room to avoid Inko's ire.
After Nemuri left, both mother and son glanced at the number one hero. Knowing what they were thinking, Toshinori let them know that he wasn't teaching any classes today so he didn't have to leave. Nodding in understanding, they quickly became ready and waited for the documents. Once Chiyo brought them, Inko scanned over it to make sure nothing was amiss and then let Izuku sign it. Once done, they left the room while saying their byes to Chiyo. Toshinori led the way out of the hospital towards his vehicle with Inko walking along beside him. Izuku followed after the two while carrying Eri in his left arm with her pressed up against his chest as she looked ahead.
On the way back home, it didn't take long for Inko, Toshinori, Izuku and Eri to all talk with noticeable tones of happiness in their voices.
Well, most of them did.
Eri didn't talk as much as they did but she did respond back to them when spoken to. When she wasn't replying back to them, she was busy looking through the car's window with amazement while sitting next to her savior. She had never before noticed what was there in the outside world. She was always stuck inside and very rarely allowed outside. And even then, she wasn't able to actually see or experience it. Now, however, she was able to do so and she wanted to see everything and anything that they passed. From the people walking on the sidewalks to the different buildings and shops, everything she saw made her gaze in wonder and awe.
When they stopped in front of an apartment building, Eri got her first look at where her hero's home was. Making their way to it and going up the floors, Eri felt herself becoming filled with multiple feelings that she had a hard time processing. Stepping inside and getting her first look of the inside of the apartment, Eri couldn't believe that she was really there. But when Izuku told her that this was in fact her new home until she joined him at UA, she allowed herself to accept it and she felt such happiness that she never felt before. She didn't know how to express it except by hugging her hero to show how she felt.
Inko couldn't help but let out a few tears of her own over what she was seeing. Ecstatic over her son being back home and healthy along with Eri agreeing with staying with them, she felt that all was right in the world. She wished that things could always be great like this. Inko was just about to let out a waterfall of tears but controlled herself.
Instead, she directed her energy towards something else that would be better for them all. "Izuku, why don't you show Eri around? And show her your room too, since that's where she'll be sleeping. I'll get some food ready for us."
"Okay Mom. You're staying too, right?" asked Izuku as he looked at the number one hero.
Toshinori grinned. "Of course! I can't say no to Inko's cooking even if I can't eat all that much."
"Oh, hush you," reprimanded Inko while blushing slightly.
Shaking his head in amusement, Izuku was truly glad that his mom and his mentor got along. It was a little rocky in the beginning, what with trying to keep everything a secret. But after being found out about his training and realizing he shouldn't be lying to the one person who cared about him, Izuku had come clean to her about everything. He even had his mentor with him at the time to verify everything and to let his mom know he'd be there to help him throughout the process. He was glad that he did that because everything else became easier. And it did allow his mom and his mentor to become friends, which he believed that they both needed this friendship.
Turning to look at Eri who was still in his arms, Izuku smiled when she looked at him too. "C'mon Eri, let me show you around while the food's getting ready."
"O-Okay Izu."
Eri looked all around her as she did her best to take in her surroundings while being shown around. The dining area with the table and chairs. The kitchen where Inko was already busy preparing food with Toshi helping out with getting the plates and utensils. The framed pictures of her savior and his mother on the walls. The comfy looking couches around a coffee table and facing towards the TV in the living room. The short hallway to the side that had a few doors.
Eri looked up at Izuku when he stopped at the door on the left in the hallway. "Izu?"
"Before I show you where you'll sleep…" Izuku grasped the doorknob, turned it and pushed the door open. "…this is the bathroom, okay?"
Eri looked inside and nodded. "Okay." She then turned to look at him. "Do I ask you to go?"
"Huh?" replied Izuku in confusion, tilting his head.
Eri looked down and whispered. "I…I had to ask…the bad people…to go…"
A short burst of anger flared up in Izuku before he quickly extinguished it while a thought went through his head. Those damn villains…but why am I getting so angry so easily lately? Pushing it to the back of his mind, Izuku focused on the little girl. "Eri, you don't have to ask to go. Okay?"
"But, I had to ask the doctor yesterday. And…"
"That's different," interrupted Izuku and she looked up at him with a confused look. He hurried to explain as much as he could. "It's because at the hospital the nurses, doctors and Mom needed to know where you are in case you needed help. But most other places, especially here at home, you don't have to ask to go. You just do. Okay? Do you understand Eri?"
Eri was quiet for a few seconds before she responded. "I think so."
"Alright. Just let me know if you need anything okay?" he asked and she nodded. Izuku closed the bathroom door and headed to his room. He noticed Eri looking at the All Might symbol on his door and that made him smile a bit. "Well, here we are Eri. This is my room but you'll be sleeping here too since we only have two rooms and the other one is Mom's. So I guess it'll be both our rooms now." Without waiting for a reply, Izuku opened the door and they stepped into his room.
"Wow." Eri was amazed at what she saw. There were many All Might memorabilia and merchandise all over the place along with some other pro hero merchandise. Though the number one hero's colors of red, blue and yellow overwhelmed the rest. There was a comfy looking bed with a desk across from it against the opposite wall. Some weights were laid against another wall. Even the many boxes that were stacked alongside one of the walls didn't bring any negative impressions to the young girl. Eri thought it looked so much cooler than her old room.
"I'll make some room for you so you can get your own bed until you come stay with me at UA," said Izuku after letting her look around for a bit.
She looked up at him with a fearful and saddened look. "I-I'm sorry for b-bothering you!"
"Hey, you're not bothering me. I just want you to be able to sleep in your own bed and have your own space that you can call your own," explained Izuku softly as he rubbed her back gently that let Eri calm down a little. "Plus, I'm sure you'll be more comfortable without me taking up all the space on the bed," he joked while letting out a few chuckles.
"No!" cried Eri, silencing Izuku at once as he looked at her with concern. Before he could say anything, she continued in a whisper. "I…I like sleeping with you cause I feel…safe."
His heart clenched once again at hearing her say that and Izuku hugged her with Eri hugging him back. "I'm glad to hear you say that Eri. You don't have to worry though. As long as you're here with us, you'll be safe. But if you want to sleep next to me until you're more comfortable, that's fine too."
"T-Thank you Izu."
While hugging the small girl, Izuku felt many things. Anger over what she's been through. Sullen over how horrible her life was. Glad that she wanted to stay near him. Hope that she'd be able to adjust without too much trouble. And among several other things, Izuku felt a strong sense of duty to protect her. It was at that moment that Izuku realized how attached he's become to Eri. And how he would go to the ends of the world to protect her and help her.
About to say something, Izuku was cut off when Inko called for them. "Alright, we'll be right there Mom," he answered. Looking at Eri, Izuku decided to keep things on a happier note and forget about what he was about to say to her. "C'mon, let's go have some breakfast." Eri nodded at him and they headed towards the dining table.
Izuku and Eri joined Inko and Toshi at the dining table. Sitting down on a chair, Izuku made to put Eri on the seat next to him. But she resisted that and held onto his shirt while giving him a pleading look. Surprised at first, Izuku understood and couldn't say no to her. Instead, he merely smiled and nodded. He had her sit on his left leg so he could reach food with his right hand. "Ah, everything okay?" asked Izuku when he noticed how the two adults were staring at him.
They both smiled. "Everything's fine sweetie. It's just you two look so cute together," replied Inko, having her eyes tear up again.
"Yeah. I think Nemuri was right. It's as if you're her parent," joked Toshi, chuckling a bit that led into a few coughs.
Izuku went red while Eri tilted her head over that word being said again. "Anyways! What did you make Mom?" asked Izuku, changing the subject.
That made them laugh that also made Toshi cough again. This time there was some blood brought up that he hurriedly covered and cleaned so Eri wouldn't see. Both mother and son gave him concerned looks and when Toshi noticed it, he waved his hand to signal that he was okay.
Deciding to move on so they wouldn't frighten Eri, Inko started describing the dishes she made. "Well, we have some scrambled eggs with tomato and parsley. Some cheese and bread. And the tea will be ready soon. So dig in!"
"Alright." Grabbing the ladle, Izuku scooped up some scrambled eggs and placed it on his plate. He took a little more and put it on another plate next to his. Afterwards, he cut up some thin slices of cheese and put some on his plate. He put one slice on the other plate and then finished it up with a piece of bread on both plates. Sliding the second plate towards Eri, Izuku noticed the smaller fork and spoon on the table. Grabbing those, he put them next to Eri's plate and then faced his plate. Grabbing his own utensil, he was about to start eating when he noticed Eri not moving. "Something wrong Eri?" asked Izuku.
Turning her gaze towards his, Eri whispered. "No…I just…it looks weird…I…don't know…if I'll like it…"
"You've never had scrambled eggs before?" he asked her in surprise with the two adults also giving shocked looks.
Eri looked down towards the floor. "N-Not with the red or green stuff," she said in a small voice.
"Oh, okay. Well, it tastes a lot better than it looks. Trust me." As if to prove it, Izuku waited for Eri to look at him and he took a large bite of his scrambled eggs, chewed it a little and then swallowed it. He looked at her with a smile. "See? I promise it's good. Mom's the best at cooking."
"I second that," added Toshinori with a smile.
Inko blushed slightly at the praise. "Oh stop it, you two." Getting up from her seat, she went to check on the tea to give her an excuse to get away.
Chuckling, Toshinori went back to his meal and Izuku turned his attention back to Eri. She still hadn't tried it yet. "Okay, just take one bite and if you don't like it, you don't have to eat it."
"What?" Eri gave him a shocked look. "I don't…have to eat it…if I don't like it? Really?"
Izuku understood why she would ask that. They probably forced her to eat... Pushing the thought aside before he got angry again, he focused on her. "Really. No one's gonna force you to eat something if you don't want it or don't like it. I promise," he said and Eri nodded. "But, I do mean it. It's really good," he repeated before taking another bite.
Watching her hero eat the weird looking scrambled eggs with no problem, Eri turned towards her plate. If Izu is eating it, then it has to be good. Just like the catsdin we ate. Making up her mind, she reached for the fork, grabbed it, made a stabbing motion with the yellow food with pieces of red and green on her plate and then ate it. At first, she was surprised over the soft texture and how it practically fell apart in her mouth. But when the flavor kicked in immediately, Eri realized how delicious it is. Unable to help herself, she let out a sound of satisfaction before attacking her plate with gusto.
"Looks like someone likes it," commented Izuku amusedly.
Freezing with her hand hovering over her plate, Eri stopped and hung her head. "S-Sorry…I…didn't mean…to do that…"
"Hey, it's okay Eri. I'm not mad or anything," said Izuku softly. Placing his left hand on top of her head, he started rubbing it affectionately. "I'm just glad you're enjoying the food. Just slow down a little so you don't accidently choke. Okay? And if you want more, that's okay too. Alright?"
Eri felt better after he said that and thanks to his rubbing her head. She looked up at him and he removed his hand. "Okay Izu."
"Cool. Oh and try the cheese too. It's not bad either."
After that, Eri slowed down some but it still looked a little funny to the three. When Eri was about to try the cheese, Inko showed her how to put it in the middle of her bread, wrap it and then eat it. After trying it, Eri liked that too and ended up having three cheese wraps along with her plate of scrambled eggs. When they all finished their meal, they relaxed while slowly having their tea that Inko had brought.
Taking another sip, Toshinori placed his cup down when he suddenly remembered something. "Oh, I almost forgot."
"What?" asked Izuku when his mentor got up and went towards the apartment door.
"You'll see."
"What's he talking about?" asked Izuku towards his mother.
Inko shook her head while smiling before repeating Toshinori's words. "You'll see."
Pouting a little, Izuku turned towards Toshinori when he came back from the entrance holding a metal suitcase in his right hand. "What's that?"
"Before I get into that, I have something to tell you."
Izuku nodded and turned to the little girl. "Eri, this is important so will you please sit on the chair for a bit? I promise I'll still be close to you. Okay?" Eri nodded and afterword, Izuku got up and placed her on the seat. She didn't make a fuss at all. Maybe it was due to him practically standing right next to her.
Inko stayed quiet and paid attention while everything was happening and couldn't help but smile.
Clearing his throat a little, Toshinori began speaking after Izuku faced him. "Young Midoriya…Izuku…I've told you this before but I'll say it again. You've helped me in so many ways since the day our paths crossed. I'm grateful for it because not only was I able to revitalize my heroic spirit thanks to you and learn how wrong I was before becoming completely cynical, but I found my successor in you as well as a family with you and Inko."
Izuku was starting to tear up while Inko was already letting out tears. Eri listened carefully but didn't really understand what was being said. But she could tell that it was important so she stayed quiet.
"You've exceeded my expectations and surprised me time and again these past two years as I watched over your progress. You went from a scrawny kid to a fit young man as you practiced, trained and prepared yourself for your quirk. And now it's been a couple months with you using it finally and you've been getting better and better with each passing day…it honestly amazes me how you seem to grow every day. Even if we never met, I know that you would've gone far in life. I'm glad to be a part of your life and I'll do whatever I can to help you in the future. No matter what it is. And I'm happy that I can be here to watch you grow and become the man…the hero...that you were always supposed to be. And on that note, once again, congratulations on passing the entrance exam and getting into UA. This is long overdue, but this is my gift to you." Toshinori finished his little speech and held the metal case out with both hands towards Izuku.
Izuku was letting out tears now. Reaching over with both hands, he grasped the metal suit case on both sides. "Thank you for everything. I will do my absolute best and I won't let you down." Bowing his head towards him, he then straightened out before taking the metal suit case.
"I know you will, my boy. Now, open it up and check out what's inside," said Toshinori with a smile.
"Okay." Moving towards the closest couch while wiping his tears away, Izuku then placed the metal suitcase on it with Eri watching his every move. Lifting the latches, he then lifted the lid. Letting out a gasp at what he saw, he couldn't believe it. "No way!" Reaching in, he grabbed the item inside with both hands and took it out. "Is this…"
"Yup. Try it on!"
"I'll be right back Eri!" said Izuku as he moved to the bathroom and closed the door behind him.
"I think he likes it," remarked Inko with a smile and Toshinori nodded.
Eri kept her eyes glued on the bedroom door that Izuku disappeared behind. Though she knew that she was in a safe place, she couldn't help but feel anxious, nervous and slightly afraid until he came back.
Luckily for her, he didn't take too long to come back. After about a minute, the bedroom door opened and Izuku stepped out of his room and walked towards them. "How does it look?" he asked as he came to a stop in front of the three.
Izuku was wearing his hero costume and they looked over it. The main part of it was a green, form fitting suit with two white narrow lines that went down the sides of his body, legs and arms. From below his elbows to the tips of his fingers were thick, white gloves that had some padding on them with red metallic bands around his wrists. Starting from his knees, he had thick knee pads that also connected to shin guards and padding for the top of his feet. His leg guards were also white with red metallic bands located just above his ankles. Around his waist was a white belt with several white pouches all around on it. Clasped around his neck and to his shoulders was a cape that was colored white on both sides.
"You look wonderful Izuku," said Inko with a smile while wiping away some stray tears that escaped her eyes.
"Like a bon-a-fide hero," commented Toshinori with thumbs up.
Eri was too amazed to say anything but she was thinking of how Izu looked like a super cool hero.
"Thanks," replied a slightly blushing Izuku while rubbing the back of his head.
"Oh, try on the helmet too."
"There's more?!" Returning to the suitcase, Izuku then noticed the helmet inside. He didn't see it before because it was under the suit. Taking it out, he noticed that it was rather light but still felt sturdy with its construction. Putting it on his head, he turned to them. It was a green helmet with a darkened visor in front that didn't let people see inside but he could see out. Two long protrusions were on top of it along with a painted white toothy grin on the lower part of it. "Well?"
"Are those supposed to be bunny ears?" teased Inko.
Izuku hung his head while the two adults chuckled and the young child was too in awe over how he looked to say anything. "It's supposed to be homage to All Might. You know, his hair," he mumbled
"Well, if that doesn't work, that large toothy smile you have painted on your helmet should do the trick," teased Inko.
"Moooom," whined Izuku with his shoulders sagging that made the two chuckle.
Calming down, Toshinori moved towards Izuku. "Alright. How's it fit?"
"Pretty good. I can move around easily even though it's kinda tight."
"Good. Now, there's some things I want to let you know about this suit but there will be more information inside the case. There should be a user manual inside somewhere."
"User manual?" asked Izuku before taking off his helmet and looking at it.
Toshinori nodded when Izuku looked at him. "Yes. Because your suit is actually pretty high tech. The base design was what you drew and what your mother made after finding your sketch." Izuku turned to Inko with a large smile and thanked his mother who told him it was her pleasure. When his mentor started talking again, Izuku faced him. "But, I had a close friend of mine upgrade it when I went to visit him at I-Island."
Izuku's eyes widened as something clicked in his head. "Wait, hold up! Are you…are you telling me…"
"Yup. David Shield worked on your suit as a favor for me," said Toshinori while grinning. "Well, both him and his daughter," he added with a shrug.
"Oh my god! The David Shield worked on my suit! Oh my god! The one who made practically all of your iconic suits made my suit! And he's one of the most well known scientists in the world! He practically runs I-Island and he…" Izuku was having a fan boy melt down and started muttering up a storm about the famous scientist who was All Might's sidekick in America.
"There he goes," commented Toshinori with an amused look.
"Oh hush; it's been a while since he's gone off like that. I kinda miss them," remarked Inko with a fond smile. Eri was looking at Izuku with astonishment, wondering how anyone can speak so fast.
Letting him go for a bit, Toshinori stopped him when he decided it was enough with a light chop against his shoulder. "Earth to Izuku."
Stopping at once, Izuku chuckled while rubbing the back of his head. "Sorry."
"It's alright. Now, as I was saying. Your suit is pretty advanced," started Toshinori while making his way to the suitcase. "I let both David and his daughter, Melissa, who is actually quite talented herself, know about you…"
"You told them about me?!" asked a stunned Izuku. His answer was a deadpan look from his mentor and Izuku gave a nervous look. "Right. Um, okay. You were saying?" said Izuku. Inko chuckled while shaking her head and Eri tilted her head again in confusion.
Rolling his eyes while amused, Toshinori went back to explaining. "Anyways, after I told them about you, your quirk's drawback and what I wanted for you, they decided to give your suit an upgrade while still keeping the base design. As you noticed, there are padded areas to provide support and defense. And see those red bands around your wrists and above your ankles?"
"Yeah," replied Izuku as he looked at them.
"Well, those are more than just decorations." Reaching into the suit, Toshinori took out a small booklet and then faced his successor. "This is the manual for the suit that explains the suit's materials, design, features and other things." Moving to stand next to him, Toshinori stopped and then pointed at the wrist band. "But to summarize, see this little bump on the side of it? It's a button. Press it."
"Okay." After pressing the button, the red wrist band glowed a bright red before it started expanding up his arm. Within a couple seconds, his entire arm up to a little over his shoulder was covered in the metallic covering. "Whoa!" exclaimed Izuku with even Inko and Eri letting out sounds of surprise.
"Whoa indeed," said Toshinori with a chuckle. "These will expand and will also retract when you hit that button. They're highly durable metal alloys but also lightweight so they won't slow you down. Plus, they'll help you with the recoil from your quirk somewhat. But that's not the best part."
"What could be better than that?" asked Izuku, with Inko wondering the same thing and Eri felt clueless about what they were talking about.
Toshinori had a large smile form on his face. "When you activate both wrist bands at the same time, they'll link up together along with your leg ones. And when they do, you should be able to use your full power for thirty seconds."
Izuku and Inko had their jaws drop while Eri wondered why they acted that way. "You're…you're kidding right?" asked Izuku in disbelief after a moment.
"Nope. David had records and data about my strength and abilities throughout the years. During my prime, David made me do extensive tests to record my capabilities. He knows the truth about it and so when I told him about you and that you needed help to adjust to your quirk, he decided to help. And when Melissa found out, by accident mind you, she demanded to get involved since she had already designed something similar that she called the 'Full Gauntlet'. Together, they made this suit to help you use your full powers at least for some time if needed until you get better at it."
Izuku was absolutely astonished. He had a difficult time believing what he just heard. Not because of what they did. But because they did it for him. Overwhelmed with multiple emotions, Izuku held his helmet with his left hand while using his right to dry his watering eyes. "I can't believe it. I'm always getting h-help by incredible p-people. I don't d-deserve so much l-luck and I-"
"Hey now, stop that," chastised Toshinori softly as he stepped forward and grasped Izuku via his shoulders. He made sure his successor was looking at him before he continued. "What did I tell you before? You earned all of this. You've worked harder than anyone I've ever seen and trust me, that's saying something. You always exceeded my expectations, never gave up and always did your best to help others. So stop looking down at yourself and doubting yourself. You deserve all the good that comes in your life. Alright?"
Izuku didn't react for a couple seconds until he nodded. "Yeah, alright. Thanks."
Smiling widely, Toshinori then hugged his successor who hugged him back. "You're welcome my boy."
Separating from each other, Izuku pressed the button on the activated gauntlet and it shrunk back to its original form. "I'm gonna go change out of this. I'll be right back."
Picking up the suitcase, Izuku retreated to his room. Changing out of his costume, he then looked at the suit he was gifted after putting it back into the case. A large grin spread on his face. This is so cool! David Shield and his daughter Melissa made my suit! I really need to thank them for this one day.
Making a mental note to pay them back for their kindness somehow, someday, Izuku closed the suitcase and went back to join the others. Since they were practically finished with their meal, Inko told Izuku to go with Eri and watch TV or play a game while she cleaned up. Toshinori volunteered to help clean up.
As the two adults cleaned up the table, Izuku led Eri to the living room. He sat down on one of the couches and Eri sat next to him. She wasn't clutching him anymore but was still sitting right next to him. "Wanna watch some TV, Eri?" asked Izuku as he reached for the remote.
"Okay."
Turning on the TV, Izuku flipped through the channels until he found one that was playing a very old animated movie that he had seen a few times. It had just started and it was about the son of Zeus trying to become a true hero so he could regain his god status. "I remember this. It's one of my favorites and it's a good one. Wanna watch it?"
"Okay," agreed Eri, trusting her hero's words and also liking what she was seeing on the screen with the colorful characters shown.
As they watched the movie, Eri leaned against his side and Izuku wrapped an arm around her. Feeling comfortable and safe, Eri allowed herself to watch to the movie. With her attention on the movie, she didn't notice when Inko and Toshinori joined them in watching as they sat on the other couch.
Izuku, however did and caught the expressions on their faces. Reddening slightly, he returned his attention to the movie. Both his mom and mentor chuckled a bit before they too started watching the movie.
When the movie finished, Izuku turned to Eri. "So, did you like it Eri?" he asked her.
Looking up at him, Eri nodded a second afterwards. "Yeah…but…why did he go back?"
"It's because he found where he belonged," answered Inko for Izuku, making both of them look at her. "The hero thought he would be happy when he can finally go back to Olympus, the gods' home and his first home. But he realized that he would be happier with the girl that he fell in love with. So he went back to stay with her," explained Inko further, hoping that Eri understood.
"Oh. So, he was happier with Meg?" asked Eri as she looked up towards Izuku.
"That's right Eri," replied Izuku with a smile.
Eri looked down at her lap. She whispered something that they didn't quite hear so Izuku asked her to repeat it. "Can…can I…belong here with you and…be happy too?" she asked in a small voice.
Toshinori, Inko and Izuku all felt like their hearts dropped into their stomachs thanks to her question and they understood her a little better then. It's only been a few days with her being with them and though they kept reassuring her throughout those days, Eri was still battling her inner demons. Even with telling her that she'll be with them from now on. She was still traumatized and still haunted by her past. She was still afraid. Still nervous. Still anxious. Her nightmare from the previous night and her behaving like this was proof of that. And she still had a long ways to go before she could start overcoming her hurdles.
But they didn't care about that since they would be there for her. And for a certain green haired hero in training, he had made up his mind that he would do whatever he can for Eri. "Of course Eri-chan. Always remember what I…what we promised you. You're part of the family now. And you're allowed to be as happy as you want."
"That's right Eri. We'll be right here with you. No matter what," chimed in Inko.
"Exactly. You have nothing to fear young Eri," said Toshinori.
Hearing them say those words again, Eri hugged her hero from the side as tightly as she could. "T-Thank you."
"You're welcome Eri. We'll always be there for you. I'll always be there for you. I promise." Izuku shifted Eri onto his lap and hugged her tightly with her doing the same to him.
Watching the two, Inko and Toshinori felt many different things. Leaning towards the Symbol of Peace, Inko whispered to him. "They look so precious together, right?"
Toshinori nodded. "Yeah. Honestly, it really does look more like a parent with their child than anything else," he replied, thinking his thoughts out loud.
Eri heard him talking since he was kind of loud. And she heard that word again that she didn't know the meaning of. Wanting to know after hearing it many times, she leaned back a little from her hug with Izuku and looked up at his face. "Izu, what does 'parent' mean?" she asked.
"Parent?" he asked with surprise and she nodded her head. "Ah, well, a parent is someone who has kids and looks after their kids, takes care of them, feeds them, protects them, teaches them and a lot more things until they're old enough and ready to look after themselves," explained Izuku while rubbing the back of his head. He glanced at the two to see if they had anything else to say but they remained quiet but did nod at him to let him know he was doing a good job.
"Oh…but…like who?" asked Eri.
"Like my Mom. She's a parent. And so are other moms and dads. "
"Oh." Eri looked down and wondered about what he said for a little while.
Seeing her stay silent, they assumed she got her answer and Izuku turned his attention to the TV. He scrolled through the channels while thinking if they should find something else to watch.
After about a minute or two, while Inko and Toshinori conversed and Izuku searched for something watchable for Eri, the young girl acted. She moved her gaze upwards towards Izuku and tugged at his shirt. When he looked at her, she spoke. "Izu…you said…you'll always protect me…help me and take care of me…right?"
Her question made the two older adults go quiet with the younger looking straight into Eri's eyes. "Of course Eri. I did say that. I meant it and promised it. So why do you ask?" he asked her.
Eri looked down, anxious about asking what was on her mind. But she pushed through before she lost her nerve. Looking up at her savoir, she asked the question that was rolling around in her head recently. "So…does…does that mean… you're my parent now Izu?" she asked as she looked up at him.
Eyes widening with his face reddening, Izuku became embarrassed. Though he understood her logic after what he explained to her, he was still astonished that she would ask him that.
Before he could say anything, Inko let out an involuntary squeal from happiness. "Oh my god, I'm a grandma sooner than I thought!"
"What?!" blurted out Toshinori and Izuku together in confusion though Eri kept her gaze on Izuku.
But Inko was already gone in a daydream. "My son being a parent! A father! Papa Izuku! Oh, that has such a nice ring to it! And little Eri is his daughter! Oh, I can just picture it! Papa Izuku taking his little girl Eri to the park and eating ice cream!"
Coming out of their stunned states thanks to the woman's words, Toshinori tried to snap her out of it but she wasn't hearing them. Toshinori was astonished over Inko's imagination but part of him couldn't help but agree how it just sounded…right.
Izuku knew that one of his mom's dreams was for him to live a good life and find a girl one day to settle down with and have kids with so she could be a grandmother. But this was little much in his opinion and way too soon. "Mom!" snapped Izuku in a sharp tone that brought her out of her imagination. Inko blushed heavily once she realized she had gone overboard. Izuku was about to say something when he felt his shirt being tugged again and he looked down.
Eri was looking at him with wide, watery eyes. Her red colored pupils were looking into his green ones. "Izu…are you? My parent? Are you…m-my new…P-Papa?" she asked him innocently.
Izuku's mouth fell open a little with his eyes widening slightly. Shocked or surprised couldn't even begin to describe what he was feeling. He was thinking a million different things and wondering just what in the world was going on and what should he do. He was absolutely blindsided. He was unable to find an answer even as he looked at the two actual adults in the room with them. Both were silent and just looking right at him and Eri with their own astonished expressions.
Izuku came to his senses and quickly thought about this. I can't do it. I can barely take care of myself. It's one thing to be a role model for Eri and help her out whenever I can, even if she is living with us. But to step into an actual father role? Her papa? An actual parent to a child? I wouldn't do a good enough job. No, I have to let her know now that I'm not the right person to carry that title for her. Decision set, Izuku turned his gaze back towards Eri while opening his mouth to voice his decision. But when he noticed her gaze and his eyes looked into hers, he froze at what he saw.
A small spark of hope was shining within her eyes.
That wasn't there before. Even in the past couple of days, he never noticed that. Even whenever he told her good things, or she saw something that amazed her, her eyes remained somewhat…dull.
But this? This was different.
It was as if some little bit of life came back to her. And seeing how it was struggling to remain so, made Izuku realize that he couldn't do that to her. He couldn't be the one who snuffed out that spark that had just barely lit. If anything, it made a new desire form within him. A desire to see that spark ignite and grow to the point that her eyes shined with life, hope and happiness.
Taking in a breath and then letting it out, Izuku spoke afterwards as calmly as he could. "Eri-chan…is that what you want?" he asked her. "Do you…do you want me…to be your…parent? Your…new…papa?" he asked her.
Mouth opening slightly, Eri didn't move at first until she suddenly reacted. Grabbing his shirt with both of her small hands as tightly as she could, her eyes locked onto his as she answered him. "Yes!"
It was silent in the apartment for a second until Izuku replied back. "Okay Eri. I'll be your parent. I'll be your new papa," he told her with a warm smile.
Hearing him say that made Eri feel happy. So happy that she burst into sobs. She hugged Izuku as tightly as she could with her face pressed into his chest once more.
Witnessing the scene before them, both adults didn't know what to say. Though they were happy for them with Inko even feeling ecstatic about it, they still wondered how Izuku was going to handle things and if this was a good decision.
"A phone call is here! A phone call is here! A phone call is here!"
Luckily though they didn't have to think about that then since a sudden call from the number one hero's phone caught everyone's attention. Toshinori brought out his cell phone and looked at the screen. Huh, wonder what he needs. "Hello Nezu," he greeted after answering the call.
"All Might. There's been a complication and I need you at UA. No one's hurt and everyone's safe so no need to panic. But do try and get here as quickly as you can," said the principal and without waiting for a reply, hung up.
"I gotta go," said Toshinori as he stood up abruptly after the call.
"What's wrong?" asked Inko and Izuku at the same time as they both stood up with the latter carrying Eri in his arms who still had her face pressed into his chest.
"I don't know," answered Toshinori as he put on his shoes and coat in front of the door. "Nezu called and said he needs me to go see him at UA. Nobody's hurt or anything like that but he still needs me. So I'll see you all later."
"Alright. Just be safe Toshi," said Inko.
"I will. And Izuku…"
"Yes?"
"Relax for today and spend some time with Eri. We were supposed to talk about you know what, but there's always time for it later. And if all's well at UA and your health remains good, we'll have you start tomorrow. I'll be in touch."
"Thank you and see ya soon."
Nodding, Toshinori opened the door and closed it behind him after he left. After he left, both Izuku and Inko looked at one another before they both let out a sigh.
"Is everything okay?" asked Eri with fear in her tone of voice as she looked up at Izuku.
"Yea, everything's fine Eri."
"Don't worry Eri. Toshi can take care of himself. He's super strong. He's the one who helped Izuku become strong too."
"Really?" asked Eri, surprised that such a skinny man was strong.
"Really, really," answered Inko with a smile.
"Can…Can he help me get strong too?" asked Eri.
"Of course. But let's wait until you're a little older first," advised Izuku. "Until then, I'll keep you safe. I promise."
"Okay."
For the rest of the day, Izuku spent almost all of his time with Eri. He did want to practice with his new quirk but decided to do that later. He figured once he started UA, he would have time to practice with it and that he wouldn't have much free time with Eri like he did now.
And so, they played some games like 'Chutes and Ladders' and 'Connect Four'. After that, Izuku brought out two sketch books and they started drawing together. After they had their fill of drawing, they cleaned up and Izuku brought one of his favorite childhood books so he could read to her. It was a picture book short story about a lion who's helped by a mouse when he gets stuck in a trap.
Eri was surprised at how a small animal was able to help a big one. They talked about the book after finishing it and Izuku explained things to her so she could understand it better. And that let her think that maybe one day, she could help Izuku like the mouse did for the lion.
While Izuku and Eri spent time together, Inko did as well but had to leave them be several times since she had some things to take care of throughout the day. One of which was when the UA movers came to pick up Izuku's belongings. She took care of that while Izuku stayed with Eri and kept her attention on other things beside the movers.
Whenever Inko interacted with them, it brought her and Eri closer. After some time, it allowed the young girl to become even more comfortable with Inko. Eri even leaned against her during another animated movie that they watched together in the late afternoon. She even took a bath with her in the evening though she did request the bathroom door remain open enough that she could hear Izuku whenever she called out to him. Inko didn't care about that since she was filled with happiness that Eri trusted her more now.
When it was time for bed, Eri was helped by Inko to change into her new light blue pajamas with clouds on them that Nemuri had bought for her and dropped off at the hospital. After she changed into her pajamas, Eri practically made a beeline for Izuku's room while Inko chuckled while following her. Izuku was already ready and waiting for Eri to come back so they could go to sleep. Getting into bed, they were bade goodnight by Inko and they repeated it back to her.
Eri snuggled closer to her hero's side like she did back at the hospital while Izuku lied down on his back. "Time to sleep Eri," said Izuku as he turned off the lights and the room went dark. He then felt Eri shivering next to him. "What's wrong?"
"Too…dark."
"Oh. Hold on a sec." Turning the lights back on and getting out of bed, Izuku went to his closet and rummaged through it for a bit. "Aha, there it is!" Finding what he was looking for, Izuku took out the item and closed the closet. He showed it to Eri. It was a star shaped lamp with red, blue and yellow colors on it. "A night light. I used to use this when I was younger too." Putting it on top of his desk, he connected the power cord to the power strip and turned it on after turning off the room light. The night light gave off just enough light to be able to see but not enough to prevent them from sleeping. "Better?" he asked and Eri nodded. "Alright. Time to sleep," said Izuku as he got back into bed and laid down on his side.
"Thank you," said Eri as they both took their previous positions.
"You're welcome. Goodnight Eri-chan."
"Goodnight Papa."
Hearing her say that for the first time made Izuku's heart skip a beat. All day she had called him Izu. Even after asking him to be her parent. Izuku wondered why she said it now but then pushed it aside since it wasn't important why since he did say it was okay. Looking at her as she slowly drifted off to sleep, Izuku felt a warm feeling fill him and he couldn't help but smile. I think…I'll be okay with all this. I just hope I do a good job for her…
Putting an arm around her, Izuku's smile grew when Eri snuggled in closer to him. I'll do my best to be a good father. I promise. He watched her sleeping for a bit to make sure she had no nightmares before his eyes started falling. Before he knew it, he too fell asleep while thinking about how he would never let anyone or anything hurt Eri…hurt his daughter…ever again.
Author's Notes - So what do you think? I've always like the idea of Izuku having a 'father' type role with Eri since he'll be pretty good at it with his caring nature. Due to that, I decided to go with that kind of relationship early on and hopefully it was done well enough to be believable. Besides that, Izuku got his upgraded costume from All Might and he'll finally attend UA. There will be 1 more chapter related to world, character and plot building but Izuku will be going to UA the chapter after that one. I do want to hear your thoughts and comments so remember to review, fav and follow!
Also, the next chapter, chapter 13, is already up for pa tre on members! I'd really appreciate it if you can become a member and if not, that's fine. You'll just have to wait longer to read. To become a member, just add /silentplayermc03 to the end of pa tre on's website.
Writing is still continuing for all of my stories but "Symbol" has been taking the main focus as of now because of all the ideas that are flowing through my head. If you're reading my other stories, I ask for a little more patience and I'll get them going again soon. Thanks!
Hope all is well, that I hear from you all and take care!
