Author's Notes: I should have made this clear earlier but, things that are written in italic are what the character is thinking. Once Again I apologize for not making that clear on the 1st chapter.
"Explain Now." Glynda Goodwitch's tone made the temperature in the office drop a few degrees as she looked her employer and mentor dead in the eyes in a way that made it clear that she would not be leaving the subject alone until she got her answer.
Ozpin however was mostly unaffected by her glare though that didn't mean he would remain silent. On the contrary, he was more than happy to explain his reasoning but not before taking a sip from his favorite mug. He was not doing this out of any disrespect towards his ever responsible and completely trustworthy right hand and comrade-in-arms Miss Glynda Goodwitch, the truth is he was just thirsty and any enjoyment that he might be getting from her rapidly depleting patience was purely coincidental. However all jokes aside he had learned very long ago that even the best jokes have their limits, so with all the due seriousness she was owed and as the topic demanded Ozpin the Headmaster of Beacon put his mug down and looked at his vice-headmistress dead right in the eye and asked, "So you disagree with my decision in regards to Mr. Arc?"
"With all due respect Ozpin, you did read Dr. Gris' report?" She said as she held up a psychical copy of said report.
"Yes I did and while there were certainly many worrying parts he did clearly write at the end that there is no reason to believe that Mr. Arc's condition was contagious. So there should be no issue accepting him into the school."
"It also said that the boy needed to be placed under strict observation, like at a hospital for example!"
"And we can observe him right here in Beacon which may remind you, has already accepted his application!"
"We accepted his application before this happened to him and on top of that my investigation has uncovered that he falsified his transcripts," She placed a folder containing proof of the fake transcripts on Ozpin's desk. "We are under no obligation to accept him as a student!"
For the first time in this conversation Ozpin felt genuine anger, "And when did transcripts and mere numbers on a sheet of paper come to matter more than the desire to protect!? If this was Medical or Legal school I would agree with you completely but this is a Huntsman Academy and the Grimm do not care about where you studied, whether your graduated Magna Cum Laude or dead last and they certainly don't care about something as ridiculous as a GPA and I can guarantee that neither will the people who were saved by your actions! Mr. Arc has the desire to come and study here and what has happened to him hasn't changed that and that alone is good enough in my eyes!"
"Then send him to Atlas! James has specialized programs for students that cannot be placed in teams! He will be safe there and be able to pursue his dream without putting anyone else at risk!"
"Those programs are designed to create soldiers, not huntsmen! The military is the absolute worst place to send Jaune and that before considering the effects that forced separation from his peers could have on him!"
"Why? What would be so bad? Huntsmen need to have some discipline and the separation would just be a precaution."
Sensing that his arguments would not work Ozpin decided to change tactics, "Did you already forget what Qrow said? A juvenile Beowolf was looking right at the boy and stood there only attacking when Mr. Arc panicked, even Elder Grimm won't act with such caution without reason! Mr. Arc's condition is the key to unlocking this riddle and when not if the military finds out about his unique condition they will try to take advantage of him and even James will be powerless to stop them as they turn the boy into a weapon robbing him of any dignity and gas lighting him to thank them for ruining his life! However, here in Beacon is where we can not only watch him and keep him safe but, we can give him the tools he needs to survive and even save others."
Glynda paused, closed her eyes and took a deep breath to calm down before speaking again. "Ozpin, I have supported you time and time again and likewise I have covered for you time and time again and I would love to simply trust your judgment on this but… I'm sorry Ozpin but this is too big and too important with far too many people at risk for me just to accept your decision on this matter without any proof."
He set his mug down and began to think the about the problem before him which was that Glynda was objectively correct in her assessment and there could be nothing that he could say to change her mind. I could just ignore her concerns and let Mr. Arc in any way but then she will be pissed. She has enough professionalism to not to try and go behind my back to get the boy removed. But if I do that I'll be damaging her trust in me and not to mention if an incident does happen… Jaune was not potentially a dangerous problem; he was a dangerous problem and he needed to be solved and the easiest and safest way to do it would be to send him to a research facility, Or kill him, a dark side of him suggested and then was quickly ignored. He needed to think of something however Qrow's story about how he met the boy kept coming back to the forefront of his mind, The Grimm didn't react to his presence. Why? It would be easy to call what happened the result of a semblance, in fact among the new batch of hopefuls was a young man by the name Lie Ren whose semblance could be used to suppress emotion and in a way become undetectable by the Grimm. But Jaune's aura was broken by the time he encountered the Beowolf which means something else is at play and to ignore that potential would be the height of folly! He looked up to his second in command and made his pitch, "Jaune Arc represents an opportunity that in all my years I have never seen before." And just like that, his opening line caught her attention, Though this isn't a lie. I really have never seen anything like this before. "We are fortunate that it was Qrow who discovered Jaune but this is something we need to capitalize on because if we don't… there is a chance Salem will learn about him and if she does she will stop at nothing to acquire him and she will not hesitate to do whatever it takes. Having him here at Beacon is the only way we can be absolutely sure she will never reach him until he is ready!"
Glynda gritted her teeth and tried to think of a counterargument but struggled to come up with anything. He's right that sending him anywhere else comes with that risk, even Vacuo isn't completely safe, "I have one condition."
"Only one?"
"Yes Ozpin, I have only one condition and it is this. You will tell the others without delay."
"I agree."
Glynda then pulled out her scroll and handed it to him who took it with a chuckle "I know you said without delay but, I didn't think you meant this soon." He then began dialing as Glynda watched to make sure he upheld his promise.
Jaune was sitting in a Bullhead filled with fellow hopefuls flying towards Beacon and he was absolutely miserable. It wasn't because of the personal knowledge that there was something deeply wrong with his body on a fundamental level, that was something he has had a bit of time to come to grips with. The problem came from his motion sickness, which despite what common sense and logic would suggest was a trait that decided it wanted to stick around with him. One might think that this familiar feeling would be a welcome sensation, a kind reminder that Jaune Arc still existed instead of some kind of monstrous aberration towards the world. Jaune would kindly ask those people to sit down and shut the hell up, motion sickness was not the way he wanted to be reminded of his still present humanity. To make the matter even more uncomfortable it was taking every once of his willpower to try and hold down the rising bile. If his situation did not change soon he would reach the point of no return and he would be afflicted by his motion sickness with the fate that many considered worse than death itself: Public Humiliation.
However, not all was lost! Soon the bullhead would land and he would arrive in Beacon but most importantly his feet would be on solid ground, the war would be over and he would be the undeniable winner! Even if it did prove too little too late there would be plenty of places where he could do the embarrassing deed in peace and away from any prying eyes. All he had to do was hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on…
Jaune was the last one off the bullhead and he left with his head hung in shame, his life was over… again. Now everyone will know me as Puke Man! He would never be cool or would he be able to get a girlfriend as long as he was in Beacon. Though truth be told it could have very easily been worse and until he knew the exact details of his condition, getting a girlfriend was simply out of the question, Which sucks but I suppose it's better than my first relationship ending in tragedy.
*BOOOOOM*
"YOU DOLT! YOU COULD HAVE KILLED US!"
"It was an accident," Ruby did not know who this angry princess looking girl was but she did know that the girl was rude and mean. Not to mention that she was the one who waved a Vial of dust in her face which was what made her sneeze, so in reality, the girl in white was the one who caused the explosion! So why are you demanding an apology from me when I'm the victim of your actions!?
"What are you even doing here!? This is Beacon! It's not a place for kids," The girl in white demanded.
Now Ruby may have been a young, easily excitable girl but, it took a lot for her to become angry but she hasn't been here for even an hour before her sister ditched her which had been followed by an explosion of all things! And finally this oh so incredibly rude snowflake demanding an apology she didn't deserve and calling her a child on top of everything else, Ruby Rose had finally reached her limit "Now you listen, you, wannabe Princess!"
"Heiress actually," an unfamiliar voice intruded.
Ruby and the Heiress turned around to look at the young lady who had just inserted herself into the conversation. She was taller than either of them and rather pretty in a mysterious sort of way but what got their attention was her amber-colored eyes and the big black almost comical looking bow sitting right on top of her head. Before they could say anything the stranger continued, "Weiss Schnee Heiress of the Schnee Dust Company which is the world's number one supplier of Dust."
"Thank You," Weiss said rather pleased that at least someone had a functioning brain around here.
"They are also infamous for their ruthless business practices which have created an illegal monopoly, their exploitation and mistreatment of their Faunus employees and of course the numerous health and safety code violations that can be found primarily in their Faunus operated mines," The stranger stated while looking right at Weiss who was turning red with indignation.
She changed her mind. This girl was just as bad and maybe even worse than the klutz that nearly killed her just thirty seconds ago. "The Schnee Dust Company is an equal opportunity employer and it is most certainly not a monopoly! We just happen to be the largest supplier because we sell the best product at the most affordable price! I suggest you double-check your resources before you go around spreading such misinformation!" Weiss angrily proclaimed at the stranger who almost seemed to be enjoying seeing the heiress angry. This was something that Weiss noticed and it pushed her off of the edge, "I do not have to stand for this and I won't!" With that, she left the conversation.
"Oh thanks, for the save um… I didn't get your name," Ruby nervously said hoping to make a new friend.
"My name is Blake and goodbye," and with that Blake was gone without a word.
Left all alone Ruby fell to her knees out of exhaustion and for a brief moment wished she was back in Signal Academy where everything was nice and familiar. It was at that moment a shadow fell upon her and she found a gloved hand being offered to her to help her back on her feet. Once back on her feet she was able to get a good look at the guy who had helped her.
"Thank you… wait a second," she said while examining his face, I've seen this guy before. "Weren't you on the same bullhead as me?"
Jaune had a bad feeling of where this conversation was going so he tried to lie, "What? No, that's silly! I wasn't on any bullhead!"
"You're Vomit Boy!"
"Airsickness is very common! So I don't see any need to bring up what happened back there especially when the fault lies with air turbulence!" he declared to her while secretly thinking to himself, Vomit boy eh? Well, I guess it's better than Puke man… I still hate it though.
Meanwhile Ruby was regretting bringing up an event that the guy in front of her was clearly embarrassed about. Dammit, Ruby, you are going to mess up your chance to make at least one friend here, recomposing herself then she then offered her hand to the guy, "No you're right and I'm sorry for bringing it up."
With a smile he took the hand, "All is forgiven… Crater Face." I regret nothing!
She looked at him at first with shock and he looked back at her with just a tinge of shame but then the dam broke and the two began to laugh. He wasn't laughing at her and she wasn't laughing at him, the two were laughing with each other without any care in the world who saw or heard them. "Oh, I needed that, thank you um… who are you?" she asked.
"Jaune Arc, short sweet, rolls off the tongue. The ladies love it."
"Ruby Rose, and do the ladies really love it?"
"Well, they better because that's the only line I know," he replied with a laugh.
"Well, I hope your weapon is better than your pick up line."
"Well, you tell me," Jaune said while pulling his sword out of its sheath while transforming said sheath into its shield form and showing both to Ruby. "This here is Crocea Mors!"
"Hmmm… it's simple, straightforward and real beauty in the classical sense. I especially like how the shield doubles as the sheath but at the same time isn't uncomfortable to walk with the extra weight on one side?"
"It's only awkward at the beginning then you get used to it and before long you stop noticing all together, so what about you? What's your weapon?"
Ruby reached underneath her cloak and pulled out what appeared to be a gun of some sort, however, the "gun," quickly expanded turning into a Massive Scythe which Ruby began to hug in a surprisingly passionate and very cute manner, "This is my baby Crescent Rose! He's a Scythe and a .50 caliber Sniper Rifle! And let me tell you it took forever to figure out how she would work and then put together and please don't even get started on how hard it was to learn how to fight with this bad boy!"
"Wait! You made that monster!?" Jaune was flabbergasted, impressed, and feeling somewhat inadequate with his own weapon.
"Well, in Signal we have to forge our weapons. Though I will admit that my uncle who also uses a scythe helped me out, a lot. So, what's the story with your weapon?"
"My great-great-grandfather used it in The Great War and now it's mine!" She doesn't need to hear the part where I found it gathering dust in the attic.
"That's so cool!"
"RUBY WE ARE GOING TO BE LATE!" shouted a blond young lady who was waving at Ruby.
"Oh, that's my sister! Sorry, Jaune but I got to go, I'll talk to you later!" and with that Ruby was off leaving Jaune by himself.
Sisters? Those two look nothing alike… maybe they're stepsisters? Huh…, I wonder how my sisters are doing. Maybe I should give Saph a call-! Jaune forcefully snapped himself out of that train of thought. He missed them, he missed his sister, his mother, his father and even home but if he allowed himself to start thinking about everyone and everything he had to leave behind he might try to reach out to them. Qrow told me that everything would be alright but I cannot allow myself to take such an unnecessary risk, not yet anyway. With that grim though in his mind he made his way over to the auditorium in the distance.
The trip to the building in reality didn't take very long but from his own clouded perspective it felt like a slow journey across an Atlas Tundra, cold and very lonely. However, despite his own distant feeling, he was able to reach the building without incident and soon became another face in the crowd of young hopefuls seeking to carve out a new chapter in their lives. It took some effort and a lot of patience but eventually, Jaune was standing at the entrance of the auditorium and was about to go inside the building when he was stopped by a short, annoyed-looking man wearing an eye patch. "Ello again Jaune," The man quickly looked him up, "Da scars ave faded a bit and youse managed to git some color back but dat ain't good enough so Imma gonna cut da bullshit and git to da point, I need you ta come wit me to da medical bay."
Normally a situation like this would make Jaune and pretty much the rest of the world rather nervous. After all, a stranger suddenly stopping you can be a nerve-wracking experience no matter what they are going to tell you, but that wasn't why he was nervous. To start with this man wasn't a stranger to Jaune though they most certainly weren't friends either, the man whose name was Dr. Gris was actually the medical professional that had examined Jaune after Qrow discovered him in the woods. It was thanks to this Doctor that Jaune was even aware that there was something wrong with his body and more importantly, it was thanks to this Doctor's report and Qrow's instance that he had been allowed to come to Beacon. But that wasn't why Jaune was feeling nervous around this man whom he owed much.
Jaune was nervous because the guy was kind of an asshole.
The medical bay was, despite the coldness of the name the personality of the man in charge of it was a rather nice and comfortable place. Though perhaps it shouldn't have surprised Jaune as medical sciences have always been a priority ever since people realized so very long ago that healthy people tended to be happier which then translated to, less likely to be brutally murdered by the Grimm. There was also the fact that stress had a rather negative impact on a person trying to recover, that said it was only thanks to the size and influence of the academy that the medical bay could be such a lovely place. In all honesty, if it wasn't for the doctor's attitude Jaune would have been tempted to spend some free time in the waiting room resting on one of the soft chairs and reading comic books from the mini-library while enjoying a glass of lemonade, You know what? I think I will spend some time here-!
Suddenly a plastic cup was shoved into Jaune's face. "Spit."
Two more cups were then handed to him, "Piss in da blue cup and put some of your shit in da green one. Youse already knows which restroom ta use and where it is, Now git," Gris then walked out of the room before Jaune could voice a complaint or even think of asking why he was here instead of with the other new arrivals, I wonder how Ruby is doing… Well, no sense in making him wait.
It was only after Jaune finished his business and handed back the two now filled cups back to Gris did he get his chance to ask. "Why am I here?"
"Sit down and roll youse sleeve," instructed Gris and Jaune complied knowing that doing so would get him answers quicker. Gris then pulled out a syringe and prepared the blood vials and when that was done he began to clean a spot on Jaune's arm. "You're ere, because some people are pussies." Gris then stabbed Jaune's arm with the syringe.
"What?" Jaune didn't even notice the needle entering his arm.
"Like I said, kid. Some pussies wanted a double-check," Gris then changed vials. "So I figure, les grab da kid while da others are sleeping. Figure, since you don't sleep much, it wouldn't be a problem."
"But what about the friends I could be making?"
"Friends dat may not even be ere by da end of tomorrow. Trust me, it's better dis way cause now da friends ya make will be sticking around," Gris was now finished drawing blood from him and was placing a bandage on the arm.
"What does that mean?" Asked an extremely concerned Jaune.
"Please come disway." Gris then led Jaune into a different room filled with various scanning equipment and pointed to a chair. "Take off yer clothes and put dem on da chair, when youse done please stand in over there with yer arms raised." Once Jaune was standing in the right spot Gris answered the question, "There iz an initiation exam and most of dem kids are going ta fail, hell you might end up failing as well which izn't bad in fact if ya doing bad then I wants you ta head fer a safe zone."
He was shocked but at the same time he sort of understood, Huntsmen hold the most dangerous and important job on Remnant so it only makes sense that the requirements are high. But at the same time..., "What happens to the ones who fail?" a rather concerned Jaune questioned.
"Most of em jus go on ta other smaller schools or head into different careers or jus try again next year, Hell I failed ma first initiation an I turned out fine. There is also a rather small bunch dat will drop da whole thing and enter regular college. Of course, there are always a couple of bad apples dat turn ta less than legal means ta make a living but they're rare. Now stand over there and put yer hands down, da sooner we finish da sooner you and I'll get ta go ta sleep."
Weiss Schnee was thrilled no, she was ecstatic because of all the people her locker could be right next to, hers was next to Pyrrha "Goddess of Victory" Nikos the Pride of Mistral and the four-time champion of Mistral's Regional Tournament! This is perfect! Now it must be understood that Weiss was not some kind of rabid fan girl, no she was simply seeking the acquaintanceship/lifelong partnership of someone she could truly call an equal to herself! Not to mention with her athletic prowess, my academic prowess plus our natural good looks, we'll be the most popular girls in school! I'll have so many friends!
"Um, excuse me…" a small voice asked and was promptly ignored.
Now Weiss you must remember that you just can't ask Pyrrha to be your partner, you have to first make her understand why you are the best possible partner for her. You have to make sure she realizes that you are without a doubt the only real choice for her. With that thought in mind Weiss walked right to the unsuspecting girl and began her pitch, "So Pyrrha, I was wondering if I could trouble you with a quick question?"
Pyrrha who had been minding her own business turned to face the speaker and immediately recognized her, Weiss Schnee? I did hear that she quit her singing but I'd never imagined that she would become a huntress, though I can't say I like how she's looking at me... "Sure, ask away."
This is it, Weiss, now don't go all in at once. Take it slow. "Have you given any thought to who you are going to partner with?" Real smooth Weiss, Real Smooth.
"I could use some help here," the irritating voice returned and was once again promptly ignored.
Pyrrha was briefly taken aback but just how straightforward the Heiress was being towards her, Wow, I did not expect her to be so blunt though guess it wasn't fair of me to assume things about her just because she's from the Schnee family. If that's the case maybe she'll understand me. Putting on her award-winning smile Pyrrha with all the grace of an elegance befitting a champion turned down the Heiress, "Well Weiss, I was planning to just let fate decide for me."
"You see I am having trouble finding my locker," the voice tried again in vain to be noticed.
Weiss was shocked but she couldn't allow herself to seem surprised. Come on Weiss you cannot let this opportunity slip by. Gritting her teeth she was about to raise a few points on the topic of why she was the best possible partner for Pyrrha when…
"And I could really use some help."
That was the last straw! "Could you please Shut Up!" Weiss turned around to face the asshole who kept trying to bug her and Pyrrha. "We are trying to discuss something important here and you are intruding so please do us a favor and bother someone else!"
Jaune was surprised by the girl's reaction but then soon recognized her as the one who yelled at Ruby just the previous day, Wow and here I thought she just had a bad day... "I'm sorry but there are just so many Lockers here and they all look alike!" I wonder if she's just nervous about coming to a new school, "Look I just want to find locker number Six Three Six!"
"Oh, that's the locker right over there!" Pyrrha said while pointing at a nearby locker.
"Oh thank you! You're a lifesaver!"
"It's nothing, pretty much everyone needs help finding their locker on the first day. By the way, I'm Pyrrha." She said while offering her hand to the funny stranger.
Jaune eagerly took Pyrrha's hand and gave it a nice shake while a confused and rather pissed off Weiss continued to watch with disbelief. "The name's Jaune Arc, thank you for your help Pyrrha, it means a lot to me!"
Suddenly the voice of Glynda Goodwitch could be heard over the intercoms. "Could the new Arrivals please make their way over the Emerald Forest. I repeat. Could the new arrivals make their way over to the Emerald Forest."
"Thank you again, Pyrrha and Good Luck!" With that Jaune ran over to his locker to get his things, while an amused Pyrrha and an annoyed Weiss watched.
"Well he was rude, I mean who did he think he was talking to?"
"I don't think he knew who I was, Weiss."
"Oh, so he is ignorant and rude."
"I honestly find it rather refreshing. Well, Weiss shall we be off?" With that Pyrrha and Weiss went on ahead to the Emerald Forest as Jaune continued to grab his things. Good luck to you as well, Jaune, thought Pyrrha to herself, Maybe we could be on the same team?
Author's Notes: Here is a little bit of a fun fact: Doctor Gris was originally supposed to be the huntsman to save Jaune in chapter 1. However I realized that I would have to make a second OC to play the doctor, so I decided to let Qrow be the hero to keep OC's to a minimum.
Also, some may notice that the breakfast scene is now gone, the reason I deleted it was because it ultimately added nothing to the story.
