Todoroki Iida and I were walking down the hall towards the waiting room for the sports festival. Iida walked in first.
"Everyone get your game faces on! We're entering the arena soon" he announced to the class. Todoroki walked in after him, walking right towards Deku. I stayed a bit behind near Iida.
"Midoriya" I heard Todoroki say as he walked up to the greenete.
"H-hey Todoroki. What's up?" Deku responded. The conversation was getting everyone's attention including mine. Todoroki never talked much to anyone, even I had a hard time talking to him from time to time.
"From an objective standpoint, I think it's very clear that I am stronger than you" he stated. Deku flinched a bit but composed himself before responding.
"uh yeah," he nodded agreeing.
"However, you got All Might in your corner helping you out" Todoroki continued.
'Why would he say that in front of the entire class. We spoke about it once during training, but we agreed to stay out of it' I thought to myself. I kept my face blank.
"I'm not here to pry on what's going on between you two. But know I will beat you" He said. I started walking towards them.
"huh…. What's with all the declarations of war lately" Kaminari said. Kirishima stood up and walked towards them as well right behind me.
"Hey, why are you picking a fight right now?" I asked monotoned, placing my hand on Todoroki's right arm.
"Right before we get started too" added Kirishima.
Todoroki pushed my arm away and said "We're not here to be each other's friends. Don't forget this isn't a team effort" he walked away not looking at me once after that.
It really hurt hearing him say that. I thought we had become friends, or at least had gotten closer. That's what I get for thinking I had friends, I guess. I was looking at the ground when Deku snapped me out of my thoughts.
"Hey wait Todoroki. I don't know what's going through your head or why you feel you need to tell me that you're going to beat me. And yeah you are better than me. You probably have the most potential of being a hero than anyone in this class. That's why you got in so easily" Deku said. He was right, Todoroki got in with a recommendation while the rest of us fought for our place here. I looked around at my classmates they were all stunned. Everyone except for Yaoyorozu, her face was blank. Guess she didn't feel the same seeing how she got in with recommendations as well. I looked back at Deku keeping my face clear of emotions.
"All the other classes they'll be coming at us with everything they got. We're all going to have to do something to stand out. But I'll be aiming for the top too" Deku finished off. I looked over at Todoroki who was standing now facing Deku head-on.
"Fine" was his only response before he started to leave again. My hands were in fists I was so angry.
"L/N" I heard Kirishima call my name from behind me. I looked up at him and he placed his hand on my shoulder. "I'm sure the nerves got to him. I know you two are close so don't take what he says to heart" I kept my face expressionless. I didn't want anyone to know how much hearing his words hurt.
"If he said it, he meant it. Doesn't matter how close they seem. He said that in front of her. Meaning he doesn't see her as a friend" Yaoyorozu said.
'The hell is her problem' I thought angrily, but I wasn't going to make a scene in front of my class.
"Yaoyorozu. In the hall. Now" I say. I took Kirishimas's hand off my shoulder giving him a small thanks for his words and headed towards the hall. Iida followed me out. "You should go in with the class," I tell him.
"Not a chance I want to hear why she's like that towards you as well," He answered.
'Ah, he also noticed. Not that she was subtle about it.'
I waited in the hall for a few seconds when the door opened and Yaoyorozu stepped out. "What?" she asked quickly.
"What's your problem with me?" I ask dryly. Iida was behind me so I couldn't see his expression.
"Problem with you? Are you that dense you can't even figure that out?"
"Yao-" Iida began to say but I raised my hand up to him.
"Don't get involved unless a fight breaks out Iida," I tell him. My voice stern and cold. "You say I'm dense and maybe I am. I never really had friends so I know my social skills aren't the best but that doesn't answer my question. Since the first day, you had a problem with me. I never paid attention to it. I just thought you were like Bakugou. Always in a bad mood. Yet you're not like that with anyone else but me. So why?"
"You're dumber than you look," she said. My wings puffed up a bit letting me know someone was near, and it seemed to be behind Yaoyorozu hiding somewhere in the corner. I ignored it since it seemed like they were just listening in.
"I am Momo Yaoyorozu. I am one of the potential brides for Shoto Todoroki" she said proudly. I kept my face expressionless, but I was surprised to hear this. I could hear Iida flinch behind me.
"So?" I asked dryly. This made her angry which I knew it would. Her face was now scowling.
"You take up all of Todoroki's time! I was sent here to make him notice me and how can I do that with you in the way! You walked in with him on the first day! He doesn't bother to talk or walk with anyone but you!" she started screaming.
"So, you're jealous? Is this what it is about?" I asked. I didn't think about it much, but I never really seen Todoroki with anyone else.
"You're so infuriating! You're not even supposed to be here! There's always, ALWAYS been 20 students in the hero courses, and what number are you! Number 21! Meaning you're just an extra! You cheated your way in here!" she kept yelling.
"Stop it! L/N fought for her place in this class I saw her fight she deserves to be here just as much as any of us!" Iida came to my rescue.
I looked up towards him and said "Iida, I said stay out of this."
"B-but" he tried to say but I narrowed my eyes and he stayed quiet. I knew he didn't like it, but it was my fight. He became a tad protective of me after the villain attack. I knew he probably still felt guilty about leaving and telling me to keep everyone out of trouble.
"I didn't cheat my way in here. I came in first place for the hero course entrance exam. I earned my place here just like Iida said."
"There's no way! I hired a PI I know there's more to you than you seem! There's just no way some ordinary girl like you just walked in here like this! I know you must be another potential bride for a quirk marriage for Shoto Todoroki. Especially with your quirk being so like his!" she yelled again.
"Enough with the yelling. You're going to give me a headache. I'm not a potential bride for him. Even if he did seek out a quirk marriage with me my parents would never agree to it. Both were going to have one and ran off with each other getting away from that stuff. They were cut off from their families because of that." I told her.
"Ok fine then you're not. Then explain how you are even here as a 21st student?!" she yelled again.
"I can answer that" a tired voice came from behind Yaoyorozu. It was Aizawa still covered in his bandages. I had already seen him coming but said nothing. Yaoyorozu visibly paled at the voice.
"L/N application was somehow lost during the entrance exams. The one that noticed this was All Might. He was the one who asked and noticed the missing application, also 2 students had come forward and asked if she passed because they were worried they may have caused her to miss out on some points while she rescued them, Midoriya and Uraraka, that's when we realized she had not been accepted due to faculty error. Iida, how long did your acceptance letter take to get to you?" Aizawa asked.
"About 3 days sir"
"L/N and yours?"
"Over a week"
"We were planning on replacing the 20th student that got into class 1-A with L/N, but on a whim principal, Nezu said to keep them" there was a small pause as Aizawa looked over to his misbehaving student, "Now Yaoyorozu what number are you in class?" he asked her. I looked over to her and if it was even possible, she was paler than before looking utterly defeated. After a brief pause, she answered.
"N-number 20"
"Now Yaoyorozu you stayed in this school out of a whim of the principal. L/N is here because she earned it. Moreover, was requested by the number 1 hero and future classmates. If I hear you are still behaving in this childish manner, I will make sure you are expelled. Do I make myself clear?" he asked.
"Yes sir"
"Good. Now class rep and deputy, get the students it's time for the festival to begin."
We tried to open the door, but something was in the way. It didn't take a genius to figure out that the class had heard the entire thing. I kicked open the door and the people on the floor were Mineta, Mina, Sero, and Kaminari.
I kept my face expressionless while I said "Ok class 1-A. Head out!" and everyone started walking. We caught up with Todoroki who was already at the exit. He was leaning against the wall but once he noticed us he stood up straight. With Present Mic announcing our class we walked out.
I knew I had to stand out somehow. My small size may give the wrong impression. I looked around and saw I had enough room. Todoroki was standing almost right beside me to my right. I opened my wings and flapped them a bit before closing them again. The crowd cheered just slightly louder than before.
'Good I have some attention on me' I thought as I kept walking. I could feel Todoroki's gaze on me, and ignored it. I was still angry about what he said in the waiting room. Deku had turned around and saw what happened his eyes were wide with anxiety. I just flashed him a peace sign and he seemed to relax a bit at least.
"This is so nerve-wracking. So many eyes on us" Deku said.
"It's part of being a hero so we need to get used to it" answered Iida.
"Man, Present Mic sure is sweet-talking us up. It's making me nervous. How are you feeling Bakugou?" I heard Kirishima off to the side.
"I ain't nervous. Makes me want to win this even more" Bakugou replied. As we walked out the rest of the classes were being announced. I saw Shinso come out with his class, he looked tired as ever, but I could tell he had been training for this. We made eye contact and I gave him a wave which he returned without a smile. His class was glaring at me which I just ignored. I knew the other classes hated us thanks to Bakugou.
"Now for this year's introductory speech!" Said Midnight. I couldn't believe what she was wearing. All the guys were blushing while staring at her, I just kept looking forward waiting for this to be over. After my discussion with Yaoyorozu, I was drained of my motivation. Todoroki was going to be in an arranged marriage and knowing that made my chest hurt.
"Now for the student pledge we have Y/N L/N!" she announced. I knew I had to make sure to include all the classes in what I said. I walked up to the mic and prepared to speak.
"Thank you all for coming to watch us. All of us first years are working hard to create a better future. So, rest assured that you will be watching the best first years this city has to offer. Good luck to all of us, I wish everyone a good time during this festival" I said. The crowd cheered, and I looked back to the students and they were smiling. Some were still glaring at me, but most seemed to like what I said.
"Good work including the entire first-year class," said Iida with a thumbs up which I returned. I was going to take my original place next to Todoroki but instead, I stood next to Deku and Uraraka.
"Without further ado. Let us get started!" Midnight spoke into the mic.
"UA doesn't believe in letting us catch our breath do they," Uraraka said.
"No, they don't. They're preparing us for villains. Don't forget, we've faced them before, remember that feeling, we didn't have time to catch our breath back then too" I told her. She flinched a bit at my words, but it was true. They had to be hard on us or else we would never make it as heroes.
"The first game is!" Midnight said as a screen popped up. The randomizer showed that the first game would be an obstacle course. "Now then as long as you don't leave the course you can do whatever you desire! Now take your places"
Everyone was at the start-up line and I was ready to start flying. I knew everyone would be angry, but they would have to catch up.
"BEGIN!"
And we were off. I opened my wings which caused a couple of students to be pushed back. I was flying above everyone. I could see everyone was squished together having a hard time getting through. I wanted to help but I wasn't sure if I could, so I just kept flying.
Just as I left the hall a thrust of cold air hit me. I looked back to see that Todoroki had frozen everyone and even the floor.
"Apologies" he yelled out to everyone who was stuck.
The other classes were clearly upset at what happened. However, 4 classmates made it out with no problem.
Bakugou used his explosions to propel him forward.
Yaoyorozu created a pole out of her hand.
Kirishima made it out although I wasn't sure how and Aoyama used his laser to fly a bit. I smirked as my classmates made it out.
"Nice trick Todoroki!" Yoaoyoruzu yelled out.
"I WON'T LET YOU GET AWAY FROM ME THAT EASY ICY HOT" yelled out Bakugou. More and more of my classmates were making it out. That's when I saw Shinso getting carried by other students.
'Smart man using others to carry him out.'
I did flick my wing to encase Mineta in ice so he couldn't move. I wanted that pervert to stay behind... I looked forward and started focusing on myself knowing my classmates didn't need me. Just in time to see the robots. I flew up barely avoiding one and landed right next to Todoroki.
"Well if it isn't the zero-point robots from the practical entrance exam" I stated simply.
"You fought these things?" Todoroki asked monotoned.
"I didn't but Midoriya did. He took one of these out" I stated and flew back into the air. Good thing I did because Todoroki froze of the robots while it was walking.
'He froze it while it was off balance. He did that on purpose for sure' I thought as I narrowly dodged the robots coming after me.
I was right in front of Todoroki, but I was able to see the second obstacle. It was just platforms with the only way through was by loose rope. I just flew over easily and kept going to the next obstacle. Todoroki had no issue getting by either.
I could hear Bakugou and his explosions not far off behind me. I looked back and saw he was using his quirk to fly. I just had to win first place. I hadn't done anything to stand out besides flying but with Todoroki showing off and Bakugou practically flying too it wasn't enough. Not to mention I could start to feel the toll of flying continuously. I knew I should have eaten more. I could finish this race easily if I went full speed. However, I didn't want people to know how fast I was.
'No need to panic. This is only the beginning' I reminded myself.
We made it to the minefield which ended up slowing Todoroki down,. Bakugou had caught up to him and was trying to throw him into a mine. As I watched the two-boy fight for first place my winged puffed up to my left.
I looked over and saw a student from class 1-B being blown towards me. He crashed into me and man was he heavy!
He was hard as a rock like Kirishima, but his skin was a silver color. We crashed into the wall avoiding any of the bombs. He landed in front of me while my back was too the wall. But he was also laying on top of my right-wing.
"Yo, that is not cool to crash into a girl" the guy complained. He sat up then looked at me. I glared at him moving my wing so he could get a hint. Somehow that made him blush. "Hey there, uhh… I'm Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu"
'I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THIS IDIOT!'
I pushed him off me releasing part of my wing and moving the rest off from under him. I started running after Todoroki and Bakugou who were fighting while avoiding the bombs. I managed to get ahead of them. Just then a giant explosion happened behind me. I looked up and saw Deku was flying through the sky on a piece of metal. I smiled a bit without noticing 'good on you'. He flew right above us and was now suddenly in first place.
"DEKU WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING HUH?" I heard Bakugou yell while I heard explosions. "WHEN DID ICY BITCH GET AHEAD OF ME!"
'oh, damn he noticed me' I couldn't fly because if I did I would most likely pass out from how many calories I had burned already. So, I just started running avoiding the bombs on the ground. Todoroki in cold pursuit as he made an ice path for himself. I just ended up tagging along behind him.
Deku was about to land when he did a midair flip and smashed the piece of metal into the group causing more explosions. Right before he did I take off into the air flying again. I landed right next to him. I couldn't afford to fly anymore. I was able to keep up for a while, but my legs weren't as fast as his and he slowly got ahead. I kept running keeping my wings closed as much as possible to keep them from causing me to slow down. I had it easy with my flying the whole time. It was time to work for it. We finally made it to the stadium again and I heard Present Mic.
"AND IZIKU MIDORIYA IS OUR FIRST PLACE WINNER"
'dammit so close'
"PLEASE BE PATIENT AS WE PREPARE THE RESULTS," Present Mic said. I was breathing heavily and the world around me was begging to get a bit blurry.
'Dammit, I didn't eat enough to fly. I really should have eaten more, but I was so nervous I thought I was going to puke'. I started falling to the side when two strong arms held me up they were both gentle, but one had a tighter hold than the other. I looked up to the one that was holding me tighter, it was Bakugou to my right. I looked at my left half hoping for it to be Todoroki, but it was the guy who crashed into me from class 1-B.
"Pull yourself together you'll make us look bad," Bakugou said.
"Uhhh hi are you ok?" the other one asked. I pulled my arms away catching my breath as best I could.
"Thanks, both of you. I'll be fine I flew too much is all" I said while straightening up. Tetsutetsu blushed.
"NO ONE ASKED IF YOU'RE OK ICY BITCH!" Bakugou complained.
"Yo dude that's no way to talk to a pretty girl!" Tetsutetsu yelled at Bakugou.
"Pretty girl!? I don't see one around!" Bakugou responded. I rubbed my temples these boys were so loud. Wait pretty girl me? As if. I just walked away from the rowdy boys.
"H-hey wait" I heard Tetsutetsu yell out, so I stopped and turned my head towards him. "What's your name?"
"Y/N L/N," I say monotoned. I should be nicer, but I just wasn't up for it. The results were announced, and Todoroki ended up in 2nd place, I was 3rd and Bakugou was 4th.
"HOW THE FUCK DID YOU BEAT ME AGAIN ICY BITCH!" he yelled. I was just looking at the screen looking at all the winners. Tetsutetsu made it in 11th place.
"HEY, LOOK AT ME WHEN I TALK!" Bakugou yelled and he grabbed my arm again a bit roughly pulling me to face him.
"Enough" I heard Todoroki say as he put his hand on Bakugous wrist. They seemed to be having a glaring contest and I just pulled my arm and started walking towards the stage where midnight was. Looking back up at the screen as I walked I saw that Shinso made it in 28th place. I looked around and sure enough, he was walking towards the stage as well. I waved at him my arm in the air. He saw me and we started walking towards each other.
"Congrats on being top 30," I tell him smiling. I could feel Todoroki's eyes on me, I looked over at him and he was just staring at us with no expression on his face. Tetsutetsu looked angry, must be from how far late he was in his place.
"It's not enough! I need to stand out to get transferred" he spit out frustrated. He suddenly started walking away.
"Ok! Time for the next event! Calvary battle!" Midnight yelled. She went on about how it was going to work, and I could hear some people mumbling. Bakugou was only growling in anger. She told us about the point system, and it was easy to understand since it was like the entrance exams.
What I didn't expect was for her to say "The point value assigned to first place is… 10 million!" I could almost hear Deku's spirit break. Everyone faced Deku and I could hear a small giggle come from Shinso. This was going to be a nightmare for him.
