Ch 2 A Path to Power part 1
Vergil has informed Rias that he would serve as her servant. He figured there would be some routes that would lead him to gain more power and battles to hone his skills. Rias informed Vergil that all devils start off by having humans sign a contract. The contracts are one of the ways the devils gain power. In addition, his achievement will help him move up in the devil society. Vergil did not show much concern about devil society.
After the explanation on contracts, Koneko dropped off several boxes filled with flyers. The first step in getting the contracts was handing out flyers. The next couple days Vergil would hand out the flyers during the day and slay demons at night to gain more. During one of his night tours he thought he tried out his sacred gear on some demons.
Outer City Area
Vergil went to one of the areas in the outer city that had some demons. A cemetery was the chosen testing area. A pack of demons armed with scythes in their hands appeared to see what foolish creature came into their territory. The demons surrounded Vergil who then activated his gear.
"Come on." Vergil said while taunting the demons.
*Heat of Battles- Bleach OST*
The black gauntlet appears on his hands and feet. "Boost" voice comes from the gauntlet. Vergil dashes towards one demon and launches it with an uppercut. He jumps into the air and then kicks it back down to the ground. The demon twitches a bit but then stops moving and turns to ashes. Vergil turns his attention to the pack of demons and begins his assault. He kicks the head off a demon with a roundhouse kick. Then he continues a series of roundhouse kicks destroying the demons with each kick. After he finishes his attack, one demon tries to attack Vergil from the side, Vergil circles around the demon and unleashes a fury of punches. The last punch sends the demon to the ground hard before it turns to ashes.
"Sweet dreams." Said Vergil after delivering the killing blow.
*Apocalyptic*
There were only a few demons left now. The distance between Vergil and the enemy was hardly a few meters. Vergil concentrated some demonic power to his fist as it began to glow and fired it at the demons who were obliterated by the sheer force
"This barely even counts as a warm-up." Vergil said as he looked at his fist and then performed a high roundhouse kick and held it in that position for a few seconds before bringing his leg down. Vergil left the cemetery and headed home. Vergil had trouble sleeping at night due to his nightmares. Tio played a tune to help him sleep.
"Bless me with the, Leaf off of the tree, On it I see, The freedom reign, We are falling, The light is calling, Tears inside me, Calm me down, Midnight calling, Mist of resolving, Crown me with the, Pure green leaf, Priase to my father, Blessed by the water, Black night, dark skies the devil's cry…" Tio sung softly to help Vergil sleep. After hearing the tune, Vergil woun up to be sound asleep. The next day at the club house, Vergil had completed his task in passing out the flyers. Rias was quite surprised, since it was only a couple days. The next step was adding the Vergil inscription inside the magical diagram that Akeno was preparing.
"Raiden, give me your hand. This tool I'm giving you will allow you to appear to the summoner." Rias informed Vergil while imprinting a symbol on his palm.
"President, the preparations are complete. Raiden can make the jump when he is ready." Akeno informed Rias.
"Raiden, when you are, ready step in the circle, and you will be teleported to the summoner. Remember to make a pack and fulfill their wish." Rias explained.
"Understood."
The next moment Vergil was teleported to the summoner location. He had formed a pack and granted the summoner's wish. He received his payment soon enough and on the way back, he saw a near empty park. Vergil thought that this would be a good spot to slay some demons and marked it for later. Nighttime came and as he had anticipated, the demons did come out. A young nun was being chased by demons in the park. They cornered her to a light post and slowly began to close in for the kill. The nun in fear for her life closed her eyes and began to pray. The demons were hissing and growling as they closed in on her.
"Don't move." Vergil said to the nun
"Huh?" Asia
*KACHNK* *Slash* The next moment, the demons were cut to pieces by something. When the nun opened her eyes, the demons were gone and Vergil was standing there with his back to her.
"The monsters are gone?" Asia noticed
"Shouldn't you be at home?" Vergil asked
"I got lost while helping someone…,I get meddlesome sometimes. If it's not any trouble, can you please show me the way to the Church?" Said Asia with a cheerful smile
"*Sign*, you should worry about yourself." Vergil said to the nun
"There should be a church nearby, she will likely be attacked again." Vergil thought to himself.
"Follow me." said Vergil
"Okay." Asia replied
Vergil had guided her to a nearby church, which just so happened to be where she was staying. They stopped by a light post.
"This is where we part ways." Said Vergil as he began to walk off.
"Hey… ummm, I didn't get your name." Asia yelled. Vergil stopped before walking out of the light and turned his head.
"Do you always give your name to someone you will never see again?" Vergil asked.
"Umm?" Asia looked down for a moment. When she looked back up Vergil was nowhere to be seen.
"My name is Asia Argento!" she yelled into the darkness and headed for the church.
In the distance, where there were no lights, Vergil was walking when he heard Asia yell her name.
"Hmph." Vergil snorted and disappeared.
Back at the Club
Vergil had returned to the occult club, with everyone else present. Rias asked how things went and he informed her that it was a success. Vergil asked Rias about churches, since he got some weird vibes from it. Rias has a stern look on her face.
"The churches are our mortal enemy. Under no circumstance must you enter them. It will cause a lot of problems for us Devils and God. Also, if you meet an Exorcist, just run. They are blessed with God's divine power, enough to eradicate us with no hope of return. You must stay away from anyone associated with the church, understand?" Rias informed Vergil.
"Hmm, a very troublesome enemy. I'll keep my eyes open for them."
"Informing him about our mortal enemy?" Akeno stood to the side of Vergil with a smile, waiting for her chance to speak.
"What's up Akeno?"
"An order of suppression has come down." Akeno informed Rias who nodded her head and announced.
"Everyone, we have a Rogue Devil on the loose. Prepare to depart immediately."
Everyone headed out to the transporter and in a flash of light they were gone.
Abandoned building in the outskirts of town.
Rias and her group come to an abandoned building. They search the rooms for signs of the Rogue. Along the way Rias explains to Vergil the roles of each chess piece and how the evil piece systems came to be. Vergil explains that he is a little familiar with chess, but it has been a while since he had played the game. Rias later explains what the rating games are and how they work. The games have such an important influence, that it can influence a noble's political position. She also informed him that she is not mature enough to enter games and has not met all the requirements to participate in the Rating Games.
"So when can we expect to be able to enter the Ratting Games?" Vergil asked
"It won't be for some time before I can officially participate. Until that time, I will make sure all my servants are ready for our debut." Rias commented
"None of us have been in that type of area yet." Yuto also stated while searching the rooms.
"President, what Chess piece am I?" Vergil asked Rias.
"You are.."
"Rias, there is a strong scent of blood coming from this room." Akeno informed Rias
"Let's move. Raiden, we will continue this afterwards."
The group enters the dark. The scent of blood is very heavy inside. Rias announced their presence to the Rogue devil hiding in the shadows. The next moment a corpse is sent flying and it lands next to Vergil. Not flinching, Vergil just looked at the unfortunate female victim and shook his head. The Rogue made its appearance. It was a large creature with half a humanoid body and half of some other four legged creature wielding two lances.
"I just love the taste of human flesh and the scent that it gives off. Little girl in red, you must have an extraordinary taste from the appetizing scent you give off. I will enjoy killing you and everyone else." Rogue devil glaring at everyone.
"So the small dog does know how to bark loud does it? You don't need to worry about tasting my flesh since your mouth would be busy swallowing the dirt beneath your foot."
"I'll kill you bitch!" The Rogue Devil was pissed now.
"Yuuto!"
"I'm on it."
Yuuto, using his speed, ran circles around the rogue and cut off her arms. Losing two limbs didn't seem to hinder her much since she still had her animal parts to use. The Rogues attempted to stomp Yuuto, but Koneko intercepted and caught the attack. Koneko jumped at the rogue to attack but was smacked away by Rogue's tail. The attack had no effect on her. Vergil was surprised at her strength and durability, making a mental note of those two features should they ever spar. Koneko charges in this time and blasts the Rogue into the wall. Koneko wipes her hands and walks off. The Rogue devil staggered as she got up on her feet. Next up was the Vice President Akeno.
"How should I deal with you?" With a demonic look in her eyes. Akeno raises her hand and hits the Rogue with lightning.
"This should be enough." Akeno said with a cheerful smile and fired another one.
"It's true when they say appearances are deceptive. She can be a fearsome opponent. Vergil raised an eyebrow.
"Don't worry, the Vice President is very kind and gentle to her allies." Yuuto pointed out. Vergil looks over and sees Akeno fire more lighting while laughing.
"Gentle? Is that right?" Finding disbelief in Yuuto words while watching the Rouge get zapped.
"You're a tough one. I'll leave the killing blow to you President. " as she walks off with a smile. Rias walks up to Rogue who looks like charcoal now.
"Any last words?"
"Just fucking kill me."
"As you wish." With a demonic look in her eyes.
"Dust to dust." As she gathers a large ball of red demonic energy and fires it. There was nothing left of the Rogue.
"My master is just as fearsome if not more."
"Mostly at her enemies. The President is very caring and spoils her servants." Akeno said with a cheerful smile. Vergil looked over where the Rogue was at.
"Caring huh?"
"Each servant has an important role in Chess. Possessing great speed, the Knight Yuuto. Insane strength and defense, Koneko. Possess abilities of the Knight and Rook, the Queen. Akeno." Rias explained
"What role shall I play?"
"Pawn."
"Pawn huh?" not very excited about his role.
"Even a Pawn can kill a King. It possesses an ability that no other piece can do, Promotion. This ability allows the Pawn to change into any other piece other than the King once it reaches the heart of enemy territory."
"A useful ability if hone in. hmm. Are there any other Pawns?"
"You are my only Pawn. When I saved you, it took all 8 of my Pawns."
"All 8? Not bad"
"I hope to see what comes from this. No one else has ever seen a devil possess all 8 pieces. Rise through the ranks and become the strongest Pawn." Rias said while placing her hands on the side of his head.
"I shall meet your expectations, President."
The group headed back to base and from there, they went their separate ways. On the way home Vergil decided to hunt down some demons and try out a few techniques he came up with. Vergil finds a group of demons and prepares his technique. He assumes his stance and draws his sword, firing a quick overdrive that slices the demon in half. Vergil, not entirely satisfied, thinks about the attack he just did and analyzes it. Vergil assumes another stance, then draws his sword. A blue sphere appeared and cut the demon to pieces. Vergil, a little satisfied with his results, tries it one more time but a little faster this time. Looking at the few remaining demons, he tries his technique one more time. Vergil assumes his stance and launches it multiple times. The demons were all cut to pieces.
"Let's call this Judgement Cut and Perfect Judgement Cut." Vergil said with a pleased expression. Vergil gets home and notices the house is a little messy. The next moment he sees Tio moving around to different points and cleaning the house. Vergil found that this type of movement could come in handy in battle. In very little time the house was clean again.
"Tio, what is that movement you were doing while cleaning the house?"
"Oh this? This is just a simple movement I use. It has some uses outside of battle. I'll show you."
They step outside in the backyard where they have more space.
"You're already faster than the average demon. This will leave little to no competition once mastered." The next moment, Tio was moving at a speed that even Vergil was having a hard time following.
"Now you try it." Tio said with a smile.
"Sure." Vergil replied
The moment Vergil was moving slower than Tio was.
"Hmm, not bad for your first time. There is a little excess movement when you are turning. Keep practicing and you will have this mastered in no time. Come, it's about time for dinner." Tio said with a smile
"Alright."
Club House
Vergil enters the club house after school. Rias and Akeno are sitting on the couch drinking tea with their legs crossed and going over some paperwork.
"Oh Raiden, perfect timing! Have a seat here." Vergil sits on the couch across from them.
"What's this about, President?" Vergil asked.
"We received a request to investigate some strange activity in one of the outer areas of the city. This is coming from the duke. In addition the ones who were originally sent to investigate have disappeared. Unfortunately, Yuuto and Koneko are not unavailable. I'm sending you along with Akeno to investigate this strange activity. If you find anything strange, contact me immediately."
"When do we leave?"
"You leave at sunset."
"I'll be in your care Akeno-Senpai."
"Akeno-san is just fine my cute kouhai. Mfufufu."
Investigating Outer City area
Akeno and Vergil arrive in the outer city area. There were a few buildings around the area. The pair searched around but didn't find anything suspicious. They checked one of the buildings and found it to be a complete bloody mess. The two walk down a dark hallway. Akeno went to use her magic to light up the area, however Vergil covers her hand and points down the hall. A set of demonic creatures were seen, drinking from a pool of blood. Vergil and Akeno crouch down behind a corner down the hall from where the two demon (Empussa, DMC5 enemy) creatures were. The creature then got up and moved off into a different direction. Vergil and Akeno tailed behind them at a distance. The demons went into a hole that leads somewhere. Akeno contacts Rias about the demonic creatures and Rias said she would arrive shortly. Once Rias arrived, Akeno briefed Rias about what they had found. Rias looked into the hole and was determined to know more about what these strange demonic creatures were doing in her territory.
The three proceeded into the cave and followed the tunnel. The first tunnel leads to an open area and a few other tunnels. They head down another tunnel, as they head down the second tunnel, it begins to have more of a hive type appearance. They came into another large open area that had more tunnels and took cover while watching two demon creatures bring blood to the strange creature in the room. The creature had 4 large vine-like needles around it. In addition the room had lots of the insectoid demons in there to include a large one that looks like some praying mantis (Queen Empussa DMC5). The strange creature expanded the hive webbing to other surfaces.
"This must be the 'strange activity' that we were asked to investigate." Whispered Akeno.
"We need to inform the duke about our findings. This could end up being a troublesome problem if not handled quickly." Replied Rias while whispering.
"What's that behind the strange creature?" Vergil pointed out.
They looked to the other side of the creature and saw a large pile of corpses, both humans and demons alike.
"Looks like we found the ones who were investigating this place." Commented Vergil.
"Akeno, prepare a teleportation portal."
"Understood."
"If this doesn't get taken care of soon, it will turn into a much bigger problem for everyone in the city"
"Damn it! The teleportation is being blocked. We can't get out of here."
"What!" shock Rias.
"I don't like this." Vergil commented.
The next moment a demon appears at an opening near Akeno. Rias blasted it with her demonic power and there was nothing left of it. The three are now in the large room with the rest of the demons. The demons are now alerted to the three intruders. Vergil, Akeno and Rias are now surrounded and the exit is being blocked. Rias fires another ball of destructive energy at the praying mantis, with the demon barely dodging the attack. The ball did take out a needle vine and a small section of the creature holding blood. The webbing began to crumble and turn to ash. Akeno noticed the change and fired lighting and took out another vine needle, however a demon jumped in to protect the creature.
"So that creature is part of the problem along with this horde of demons." Rias noted.
"We can take out the demonic creature if we both gather enough power, but it will take some time. One of us should concentrate while the other two hold off the demons." Akeno suggested.
"No, you two gather up what demonic power you can and destroy that thing. I will hold them off." Vergil pointed out.
"Raiden, that's crazy against this number of demons." Rias pointed out.
"Think of it like this, the longer we stay here the lower our chances of survival get. So hurry up!" Vergil pointed out.
"President, I know you don't want to put us in unnecessary danger, but right now we have very few options and time. Raiden-kun, if you can buy us enough time then please, do so. I don't think they will wait for us much longer." Akeno pointed out.
"Looks like we don't have much of a choice. Alright! We'll gather what power we can. In the meantime, we are counting on you to protect us while we gather enough power to destroy that thing." Rias issued her orders.
"Leave it to me President."
"One more thing. Don't you die on us, you understand?" Rias with a concerned expression while placing her hands on the sides of Vergil's face.
"I won't allow that to happen." Vergil replied.
*Emil Despair-Nier Automata CUE*
Vergil began to have a quick flashback of when he was a kid talking to two girls. He walks off to confront the demons and buy Akeno and Rias time needed. Rias and Akeno begin to gather demonic power. Vergil looked around to analyze the surrounding area and drew out Yamato. The demons began to move in and Vergil began to intercept them.
He Tricks Up to two demons and cuts their heads out. He looks behind and sees a few more then begin to move in. Vergil fires a Judgement Cut *Judgement Cut SFX*, slicing them up. Now 3 more demons from a different direction begin to move in. Vergil Tricks UP to them, positions himself in a way that he aligns all three together with him and does an upward slash, cutting them in half. Vergil continues the pattern of Trick UP to one side and firing a Judgement Cut to the opposite side.
Rias and Akeno are about halfway charged, and Vergil had already taken out a large number of demons, however there were still plenty left to fight. The praying mantis was irritated and began to move in. The mantis leaps in the air towards Rias and Akeno, but Vergil intercepts it with a kick. Upon landing he fired off another Judgment Cut *Judgment Cut SFX* across the area taking out three demons. He then turned his attention back to the praying mantis which was just moving forward while swinging its claws. Vergil activated his Sacred Gear "Boost, Boost, Boost!". The gear responds to his desire for power. The stronger his desire the more power he will receive. Vergil dashes in and confronts the praying mantis.
The praying mantis continues to swing its arms wildly, Vergil dodges the attacks while looking for an opening. After the praying mantis stops swinging for a brief moment, Vergil does a Rising uppercut (Rising Dragon), launching himself and the praying mantis into the air. While in the air, Vergil kicks the praying mantis, sending it flying back into a wall. Vergil lands and notices the demons are increasing their numbers to rush Rias and Akeno.
Vergil decides to pick up the pace and increases the output of his Sacred Gear one more level. He jumps towards a group of demons and kicks one's head to the ground. He then turns around and roundhouse kicks one into another group of demons, then fires a demonic projectile to the opposite side, taking out more demons. Vergil then Tricks Up into another direction and performs several roundhouse kicks, knocking the demons' heads off. A few minutes went by and Vergil was slightly banged up from taking on so many demons.
The number of demons rushing began to increase and Vergil was slowly losing stamina due to not being used to the Sacred Gear, causing him to move a little slower. However, fortune was on his side as Rias and Akeno were just about done charging up. Vergil decided to deactivate the gear to preserve his stamina and continue with his sword. Vergil fires a quick overdrive projectile in the opposite direction through a number of demons on both sides. "Raiden, get clear." Rias shouts. Vergil moves out of the way and appears behind Rias and Akeno as they launch their attack. The attack obliterates the demonic creature storing the blood resulting in an explosion. The three head for the tunnel leading back to the outside followed by some demons
After reaching the outside, Akeno begins to prepare the transportation circle, while Rias and Vergil fight off the remaining demons. Rias quickly destroys the demons from a distance and Vergil cuts down the ones that were close by. Akeno yells that the circle is ready and then out of nowhere a large rock is tossed towards the circle. Vergil Tricked up to Akeno and covered her up from getting hit by the large rock, but the circle was destroyed.
The praying mantis demon makes an appearance. The three knew if they wanted to leave that the praying mantis had to be dealt with. Rias fires off her destructive blast, but the mantis dodges it. Akeno follows up by shooting lighting but it barely dodge it. Vergil intercepts it by delivering a series of punches with his boost gear, pushing it back.
"This demon is quite nimble." Rias points out
"We have the power to destroy it, but lack the speed to hit it." Akeno replied.
"It has good reflexes but weak armor, therefore it needs a really powerful hit." Vergil observing. Vergil had an idea and waved at Rias and Akeno over to tell them his plan.
"It's a risky idea if you ask me, but it just might work." Rias smiled
"I trust my senpais have good aim."
"Leave it to me. Just make sure you're clear from the final blow." Akeno smiled.
"I leave the rest to you two."
Rias begins to fire off demonic energy. The mantis dodges the attack. Rias continues to fire off more demonic energy in different angles. The mantis continues to dodge Rias' attacks. Vergil moves in on the mantis while Rias has it distracted. Vergil jumps towards the mantis and at the same time Akeno raises her hand with demonic energy in it. The next moment lightning comes down, Vergil catches it with Yamato as he comes down with a lightning enhanced attack. The mantis is stunned, and Vergil delivers three more thrust strikes with lighting on it, causing the mantis to be stunned longer. Vergil tricks back to Rias, who just fired a large destructive energy ball enough to obliterate the mantis. The demons are wiped out and with the last bit of demonic power another circle is made and the three transport back to the club room.
Back at the occult club
"That was a close call." Said Akeno as she gave a sigh of relief.
"I'll send a message to the Duke about our findings. Good work out there. Raiden that was an excellent plan against the praying mantis."
"It was just a simple observation. Anyone of us could have come up with it." Replied Vergil.
"No, you were able to properly analyze and use one of its strengths against it." Rias explained.
Vergil gave a nod and slowly walked out. Akeno and Rias watched Vergil leave, they had a concerned expression on their faces. In the hallway walking slowly, Vergil was exhausted from his battle. There were certainly more demons there than what he usually finds, however that was not what was on his mind. The thing that was troubling him was his willingness to protect the club president and vice club president. He just met them not too long ago and they just got out of a situation that could end quite differently if he was not there with them. Vergil does not understand why he fought to ensure no harm came to either of them. It was like his instincts were guiding him to not just to get more power but to also protect President Rias and Vice-President Akeno.
Vergil decided to worry about it later, he was passing by the nursing area that held the beds for students to rest. He made his way to the bed at the far side near a window. Once he arrived at the bed fell onto it face first.
Vergil continued to have nightmares from his past. The loss of his home and mother on that rainy night. The dream goes farther this time showing him two girls, however he cannot see or hear them clearly. The area they are in is split in two, the girl's side appeared bright and his side was gray but not completely dark. A light emitted from his chest, it was the amulet his mother gave him.
"Where is the other half? I can't seem to remember such an important thing."
The area around him goes dark suddenly. Behind him is the Nelo Angelo figure. Vergil just looked at it with disgust. Nelo Angelo draws his sword and dashes to the young girls. Vergil intercepts Nelo Angleo.
"Touch them and I will kill you! I won't let you anywhere near them" Vergil glares at him.
Vergil draws his sword, and he charges towards Nelo Angelo who had three red circles behind him charges forward as well. The dream ends.
Nursing Room
Vergil wakes up from his dream staring at the ceiling in cold sweat. "Another nightmare huh." Vergil attempts to get up but finds he is a bit immobilized. He looks to one side and sees Rias's naked body with her hair covering her chest while she hugged him like a giant pillow. Vergil looks the other way and sees Akeno still in her clothes, wrapped around his arm and leg, fast asleep. There was still some time before the sun came up. Vergil decided to lay there for the time being. Rias wakes up some time later.
"Oh, Good morning Raiden!"
"Good morning, President. What brings you here?"
"Oh that, we saw you here and decided to join you."
"Is that so? How do you explain yourself being naked?"
"I can't sleep unless I'm completely nude and having a stuffed animal makes it even better." Rias said with a smile.
"I see. Well then.." throws a sheet to cover her up and at the same time Akeno pulls tightly on Vergil's arm.
"President, since you have such a beautiful figure, you should reveal that to someone you love." Vergil points out. Rias simply smiled.
"Well aren't you just a gentleman mfufu."
Akeno wakes up shortly after.
"Ara, Good morning Raiden san!"
"Good morning, Akeno-san. I trust you slept well?"
"One of the better nights I've had sleeping." Said with a smile.
"I see. I'm glad to have been of help." Vergil gets up out of the bed, gives a small bow and heads out first. He lets out a small smile as he walks.
"Something like that is not bad once in a while." As he walked down the hall.
Meanwhile back in the room, Rias was getting dressed.
"I think he enjoyed that, what do you think, Akeno?"
"Hmm, he didn't show that he disliked it."
"He fought bravely last night against an incredible amount of demons."
"All while covering for us to destroy that thing. I don't remember the last time I've seen such a brave man."
"We can talk more about Raiden later. We have to take care of today's tasks."
"Yes, Club President."
School Campus
Rias gets dressed and showers back in the club before starting the school day. It's lunchtime and the students are eating the designated areas for lunch. Vergil was sitting in his usual spot under the tree near the occult club. He chose this spot because it's quiet and not a lot of people were in the area usually. That is until today, he had an unexpected guest join him for lunch today
"Is there room for one more here?" Akeno asked
Vergil looked and saw Akeno was the one who asked.
"Akeno-san? Make yourself comfortable." She accepts his offer with a smile as he makes room for her to sit down.
"So, what brings you out here today?"
"I saw you over here by yourself. So I thought to come over and join you. I hope I'm not being a bother?"
Other female students whispered and giggled in the distance as they spied on the pair of friends talking with each other.
"Nonsense! It's no trouble at all."
They had lunch and talked for a while before their break ended, and the two parted ways, going back to their respective classes.
The end of the school day had come and the students were heading home.
Vergil headed to the occult club and awaited his task. Rias had one summoning for him tonight and he departed shortly after. Vergil arrives outside the summoner's home and enters..
