"I hate you."
"I love you, too."
*A Few Days Later*
Katsuro was relaxing in the shade of a tree. He had stayed out late training and ended up falling asleep on a soft patch of grass. While anyone else would be cautious about leaving themselves out in the open in foreign land, the Clan Head had no problems seeing as his awareness of his surroundings never faltered even in sleep. It was as he lay there, basking in the gentle breeze, did something wander into his field.
Someone was coming. Their presence was cold but more soft, like snow. He could hear the near silent footsteps, the gentle swish of cloth, and the quiet puffs of every breath. Katsuro cracked open an eye to see a feminine figure kneel down a few inches away from him. Anyone else would have thought them to be female but Katsuro's senses were more advanced than most. While the person did have a gentle, flowery scent to them, he could still smell the masculine undertone that all males have. He could also see the lean, compact muscles that were hiding under the pink kimono.
"Hello there. May I ask why you were sleeping here? You could get sick, you know." The soft voice of the man wafted into his ears. Katsuro sat up and covered a yawn politely.
"I don't mind. I don't really get sick anyway, but thank you for your concern. May I know the name of such a beautiful person such as yourself? My name's Katsuro, by the way," the teen smiled. The long-haired brunet blushes and tucked a lock of hair behind his ear.
"My name's Haku. Thank you for the compliment, but I'm a guy." He admitted. Katsuro smiled and nodded.
"I know. I have a very strong sense of smell. And though you have a gentle, herbalist smell to you, I can always tell the gender of someone that is purely masculine and feminine under the initial scent. Besides," he leaned forward, making the brunet blush at their closeness, "I don't mind having a beautiful man such as yourself in my company." He whispered and gently brushed a lock of hair behind the brunet's ear.
Haku didn't know how to respond to that and could only glow bright red at the alluring sound of the handsome man. Katsuro merely chuckled while getting to his feet and offered his hand to the smaller man to which he accepted.
"Now, what type of herbs are you looking for? Judging by that basket, you must be really worried about someone with the amount you already have inside." The dual-haired youth questioned as he took notice of the weaved basket. Haku looked down into it with a saddened expression.
"Yes. Someone very important to me isn't feeling too well so I've come out to pick some remedies that would help them recover quicker." He explained as the two moved further into the field after he showed the younger male the herb he's looking for..
"How sad. But it's a good thing they have such a caring person like you to take care of them. They should be happy that you're going out of your way to help them get better." Katsuro said as he kneeled down, looking at a plant to see if it was what Haku was looking for.
"Oh no! It's the least I could do compared to them saving my life and giving me a purpose to live. If it weren't for them, I'd more than probably be dead long before now. That's a debt I can never repay." The beautiful brunet softly smiled while looking down into his basket. Katsuro looked at the thankful and wistful expression on his face before standing and turning his eyes up to the sky.
"You know. We're both similar in that regard." He spoke. Haku turned his attention toward him with a questioning gaze.
"How so?"
"We were both saved by someone at our lowest point in life." He turned back to the older male. "A debt we can only pay with our lives."
Haku was surprised at that response. He didn't think a genin would actually understand him.
"Yes-"
"But," Haku was cut off but was curious on what he would say, "The one who saved me would just tell me to live my life in a way that I can be proud of. Not for them." Katsuro looked deeply into Haku's eyes. "We don't have to live our lives in the way that we can only repay our saviors by putting their lives over ours. We have to fight and keep getting stronger to protect them and ourselves because if we lose our life…who's going to protect them? Who's going to take care of them in our stead? Who's going to stay by their side as this world goes to shit?" Haku was stunned and lowered his arm holding up the basket. Katsuro gently took it from him and placed it on the ground. He took both of those soft hands into his rougher ones.
"Haku. Don't sell yourself short in believing that your life is inconsequential to someone else's. Every life has meaning, whether it's something big or small. You have to decide what you really want to do with your life. How you want to spend it. Do you see yourself in the future? What are you doing? Are you truly happy?" Unbeknownst to the brunet, tears started streaking down his cheeks. He's so focused on the stunning blue eyes and the heartfelt words that he didn't notice he was crying until Katsuro let go of a hand to wipe his tears away. Haku hiccuped and ducked his head down.
"But he saved me! I promised I would stay by his side and serve him until my dying breath! I wouldn't be alive if he hadn't found me when he did! How am I supposed to think of being anything else other than his shield? His tool?" The man was in hysterics. Katsuro brought him into a comforting hug, his cloak making it easier to wrap around him as if hiding him from view.
"You are not a tool, Haku. No one is. Tools cannot talk or walk. Tools cannot think. But, most of all. Tools do not have hearts." He withdrew from the hug to cup the flushed cheeks. "They don't have feelings." Haku brought his own hands up to grasp underneath the tan wrists. He blinked his wet eyes and looked up into the warm, dry pair. Katsuro couldn't help but to think how pretty he was at that moment.
"Believe me. You are someone. And that someone can be worth more than any tool could ever be." He finished with another wipe to Haku's cheeks before placing a gentle kiss on his forehead. Such a soft action made Haku close his eyes and take in the moment of pain turned relief.
He always discarded his thoughts of being Zabuza's equal or of being more than just a tool that didn't have the capability to think for himself and just went along with the ronin wherever he led them. He was always afraid of feeling anything other than useful to his master that he'd forgotten how to truly live. How is it that this young man was able to bring back all those buried thoughts and emotions after only just talking to him, for the first time?
When Katsuro leaned away, Haku opened his eyes and planted a kiss to the thin lips of the other. He doesn't know why he did it, but it just felt right. He felt Katsuro release his face to plant his hands on the small of his small and bring them closer while Haku rested his on the taller's shoulders.
The two were lost in each other until Haku slowly parted from those slightly chapped lips. He brought up a hand to caress a whisker-marked cheek.
"If only we had met each other under different circumstances…" he murmured. Katsuro gave him another, shorter kiss.
"I agree. If only you weren't my enemy right now."
