Thanks for sticking around- I know it's been a while! If you're new—hello!
I really enjoyed writing this chapter… it's a bit of a long one, I got a bit carried away haha!
Hope you like it!
…..
The sounds of screeching Doduo pulled Ash from his slumber. Despite being days away from Christmas, the sun poured in through his bedroom window, like it usually did after a night of heavy rain. He was certain the weather wouldn't last and Pallet would be hit with fresh snow come lunchtime, but it was still nice to see the sunshine no matter how long it decided to hang around. Allowing his eyes to flutter open, a groggy Ash noticed how numb his arm had become from squeezing into the bed he'd had since he was eight or nine. Looking down at his chest, his heart leapt into his throat when the night's events came flooding back to him.
A pool of orange hair, strewn about messily caught his eye as the girl it belonged to slept peacefully, her lips parted slightly as she breathed. Her hands were still rested upon Ash's chest, clearly comfortable with the warmth he provided her throughout the night. The boy smiled down at her, happy that she had been given a good night's sleep, after the trauma that had woken her, in the early hours of this morning.
Ash noticed how nice it felt, sleeping so close to her, being the one to make her feel safe and protected. Yes, the bed was far too small for the two of them, but he didn't mind and he was sure she didn't either. He wanted nothing more than to curl up beside her for the rest of the day… but he knew this wasn't possible.
Soon, she would be awake and the moment would have passed. She would be safe from her dreams because she would no longer be sleeping. Ash took the opportunity to look at her snoozing form one last time, before gently manoeuvring his body and untangling it from hers. When he had done so successfully, she began to stir but fortunately for him, did not wake. Without thinking, he leant forward and planted a small kiss to her forehead. Holding his breath, he stepped away from the bed, only to be stopped before he had a chance to exit the room.
"Pika?"
"Shhh, Pikachu!" Ash hushed, "Misty is sleeping…"
"Pikapi, pi pika Pikachupi?" the little creature whispered.
The boy smiled proudly at his little pokemon. Being the only human who could really understand the mouse, he knew exactly what he was asking his trainer.
"Thanks pal, I think it'd be great of you to watch over Misty until she wakes up."
Pikachu nodded happily, using the boy as a ramp and bounding onto the bed where Misty was sleeping. The pokemon cuddled into the blanket beside her, closing its eyes in attempt to nap once again. Ash glanced at Eevee, lying peacefully on a pillow on his desk. He would've moved the little creature too, but it seemed much too comfortable to disturb now.
Knowing Misty was now resting peacefully too, the raven-haired boy exited the room, tiptoeing down the steps and into the kitchen, now with one thing on his mind…
Breakfast.
…..
When she woke, Misty's nostrils were filled with the scent of pancakes, wafting in from the kitchen, downstairs. She was alone, leading her to think last night was just a dream and that Ash hadn't spent the night beside her in her bed. Sitting up, Misty rubbed her eyes, looking around the room for any sign of the boy, somewhat disappointed when she found he wasn't there.
With a yawn, she swung her legs out of bed, letting the carpet tickle her bare feet as she moved towards the bedroom door. She thought it may be a good idea to check her appearance before meeting everyone downstairs.
"Yikes," she mumbled to herself, taking in the image before her as she looked into the bathroom mirror. Her red hair was messily knotted and stood up in places, making it look like Misty had had a fight with a very angry spearow, who had attempted to build a nest in her mane. Picking up the brush she had left out the night before, she began to comb through it, her hair returning to normal after a few minutes of brushing. She decided to pull it into a large bun, strands falling around her face, which she splashed with some water, the red head letting the coolness wake her up before running her toothbrush across her teeth.
She figured she may as well change while she was up here, so returning to Ash's room, she pulled some clothes from her bag. She opted for a pair of black, high waisted jeans and a slightly-cropped, navy, knit sweater. She thanked her lucky stars that she had decided to bring some boots, knowing the weather would be colder than she was used to. Slipping her feet into her grey combat boots and doing a double take in the mirror, she decided this was as good as it was going to get today and down the steps she went.
Much to her surprise, Ash stood alone as the stove, Pikachu and Eevee sitting patiently on the bench as the raven-haired boy hummed to himself, flipping a pancake in the pan. A pile had begun to grow in the plate beside him, perfectly rounded pancakes catching Misty's eye.
"Woah, looks like someone paid attention to Brock's cooking all those years ago," Misty teased, causing Ash to jump.
"For all you know, they could be inedible," he threw back, resulting in a laugh from Misty.
"You feeling a bit better?" he questioned, his voice soft and concerned, making Misty's heart melt. Gosh he was cute.
"Y-yeah… thank you again," she responded, taking a seat in one of the stools behind the breakfast bar. She was happy to know that she hadn't imagined his arms around her hours earlier, but at the same time she wasn't about to remind him of how she had fallen asleep. He was just being friendly, that moment had passed; or at least that's what she told herself in attempt to cure the feelings that were beginning to grow in the pit of her stomach.
Ash just smiled in response. He had finished cooking and had gathered a few plates, tossing some pancakes into them, before handing one to Misty. The red head was glad (but not really) to see he now wore a shirt, meaning she didn't have to fight the blush that would certainly appear if he stood before her shirtless. Thanking him, she grabbed her plate and planted herself at the Ketchums' dining table, where Ash had placed an abundance of spreads and a jug of juice to accompany their meal.
They ate in silence for a little while, Misty taking in the flavours present in her breakfast, still surprised that Ash had cooked this by himself.
"These are great! Thanks Ash," she gushed, shoving in another mouthful, letting her tastebuds savour the sweetness the pancakes provided.
"Y-your welcome Mist—" he spoke, the words choked by the food in his mouth, which he gobbled up in a haste. Misty giggled, knowing (besides pokemon), there was nothing else he loved more than food.
When they finished eating, Ash insisted in clearing the table alone. Misty was taken back by the gesture, but it was sweet, so she let him do it, choosing to chat (or attempt to) with Pikachu instead.
"Where's your mom? I haven't seen her this morning…" Misty asked, as Ash finished up with the last of the dishes.
"She left a few hours ago, needed to get a few things before Christmas… or something like that."
"Right. Speaking of Christmas, what have you gotten her?"
Ash chuckled awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Are you kidding me Ketchum?! You haven't bought her anything?! Your own mother! Go and get dressed, we're going shopping!" Misty ordered him, the boy staring back at her sheepishly.
"Wha- Fine!" he groaned, figuring there was no point arguing with her, before disappearing up the steps as the red head shook her head.
This was his first Christmas back home and he hadn't gotten Delia a gift. Gosh, she wanted to smack him. Misty hadn't exactly finished her own shopping, but she was a gym leader… she didn't have much free time. With a sigh, she stood up from her chair, peering out the kitchen window as she finished up the dishes. The morning sun had disappeared as quickly as it had arrived and clouds now filled the sky. The trees in the distance swayed gracefully in the wind, meaning an icy breeze was definitely in the air. She couldn't believe that Christmas had come around already. The last year had seemed to fly by and it felt as though the years had zoomed past so much quicker, the older she got. It was crazy that this would officially be the twelfth Christmas of her friendship with Ash… and he was here to celebrate with them all, in person.
Speaking of, Ash had finally reappeared in the kitchen, Misty having to swallow the lump that had risen in her throat at the sight of him. She wasn't sure why, but his outfit made him look… well… rather, sexy. Maybe it was the way his style had improved, or the unnecessary sunglasses pushing back his black hair; whatever. It was making her feel a little warm and she had to stop herself from staring. He wore a pair of slim, black jeans, and a dark grey shirt hidden behind a black collared coat. His feet were covered by a pair of brown, suede boots, matching the sunglasses hidden in his hair.
"Ready to go?" he asked, thrusting his wallet into his pocket, unaware of the way Misty's eyes raked across his body.
"Ahem—" she cleared her throat, "y-yeah, just let me get my coat…"
Pressing up the stairs, Misty retrieved her coat and her bag from Ash's bedroom. Shaking the nerves from her body, she tried to forget how he looked, telling herself that he was her best friend and she didn't see him like that. Repeating it over and over, like a mantra, she was finally ready to descend the stairs, scooping up Eevee and heading straight for the front door, ignoring a befuddled Ash who was forced to follow after her.
He was oblivious to the reasoning behind her hurry, shrugging as he moved swiftly towards the front door.
"Girls are weird, huh Pikachu…" he muttered to the pokemon on his shoulder.
"I heard that Ketchum!" she shouted behind her, Ash wincing slightly.
Still, he believed the statement to be true. Women were most definitely weird.
…..
"Come on Ash, we need to find something for your mom. Christmas is like two days away, you have to get her something… today!" Misty grumbled, attempting to drag Ash away from a café window displaying freshly baked cakes and pastries. Pikachu joined her, pulling at the hem of Ash's jeans with the hope that his trainer would move away so they could go home. Eevee chirped happily in Misty's arms, not really fussed about the commotion happening before her.
"But Misty, I'm so hungry!" Ash whined, still gazing hopelessly at the window.
"We ate like an hour ago! Let's move!" she ordered, Ash huffing and following her down the road.
"Two hours actually…" Ash huffed under his breath.
He hated shopping. The only thing making him feel a little bit better about it was his company; although, she was becoming quite bossy and he was getting tired. So far, the duo had bought presents for Brock, Gary, Professor Oak, Tracey, and Misty had gotten a gift each for her sisters. They had also gotten presents for each other, that being something Ash had taken care of, way before coming back home.
"Can't I just put my name on the gift you bought her?" Ash groaned, Misty shaking her head in disapproval.
"No!" she shouted, "this is YOUR gift, for YOUR mother! We are putting some effort in here."
"Pika pi!" Pikachu joined her in the chastising.
"Sorry…" he mumbled in response, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly.
It wasn't long before the trio had reached a jewellery shop, close to the end of the street. Misty studied the window intently, before decided they should take a look and go inside. Ash trailed behind her, taking in the range of accessories before him. The shop looked quite expensive; diamond necklaces, earrings and bracelets shone from behind glass barriers and rings were protected in locked cabinets close to the register. Ash had quite a bit of money saved up from his travels, most being prize money from his many battles; he wasn't afraid to spend it, especially on his mom of all people. Deciding a bracelet was more fitting for her, he made his way over to cabinet in which they were held.
Pikachu on his shoulder, Ash tried his best to figure out what Delia would like. He turned to Misty, to ask her, only to be met with silence notifying him that she wasn't there.
Panicked at first, he looked around, until finally, he caught a glimpse of her; she stood in front of the glass cabinet which housed the rings. As he made his way over to her, he thought about what type of jewellery resided in this particular section. Ash noticed the range of sparkly diamond bands, the 'engagement rings' label answering his previous question.
"Whatcha looking at?" he asked her, teetering on his feet.
Misty didn't look away from the cabinet, Ash following her gaze to a single ring displayed on a blue, velvet cushion. It was separated from the rest, its colouring making it stand out; different from the rest.
"It looks just like my mom's, well apart from the blue stone, but that makes it even more beautiful," she said, still intrigued by the object. The ring was white gold, the main band holding more than a dozen tiny diamonds circling all the way around. The main stone in the middle was a teardrop shape, the stone a dazzling aquamarine in colour, reminding Ash of the cascade badge handed out at Cerulean Gym.
"It's the only one of its kind," the cashier explained from behind the counter, "no one has bought it, many seem to dislike the blue, usually wanting more of a 'real diamond' look."
"I think it's perfect…" Misty enthused, still staring at the ring in awe.
"Do you want to try it on?" the cashier, an older woman, asked with a smile.
Misty's nose crinkled slightly. "But I'm not getting engaged?"
"Who's to say it won't happen soon, right young man?" she smiled at Ash, a blush dusting the boy's cheeks.
"Oh! No, it's not like that—we aren't—I mean he isn't—"
"We aren't together!" Ash intervened, saving Misty from such a fluster.
"Oh. I see. I do apologise!" the woman smiled, pushing up her glasses, which had fallen slightly down the bridge of her nose. "But still… here, give it a try!"
Misty smiled up at her, finally taking her eyes away from the ring behind the glass.
"Really?! Thank you!" she gushed, watching the woman unlock the cabinet and bring the ring onto the front counter.
Ash watched Misty in awe. He knew she was a true romantic, she always had been; but now that they were all getting older, he knew more than anything that she longed for love and for a family of her own. He smiled warmly at her, meeting her eyes for a split second before she glanced down at the ring once again.
"Here you go," the shop assistant smiled, grabbing Misty's hand and sliding the ring onto her finger. "Wow… a perfect fit! It's not often we see that happen!"
"It's beautiful… what do you think, Ash?" Misty turned to him somewhat impulsively, Ash becoming nervous as to why she suddenly wanted his opinion.
"Ahem. Ah. It's nice…" he mumbled, taken aback by the thought of Misty being engaged, even if it wasn't truly upon them just yet.
"If I ever get engaged. This is it. My mom… she had a ring that looked almost identical. My parents would say that their love was as infinite as the ocean… Mom always told me that my dad bought her ring because of the way the shape of the diamond reminded them of a drop of water in the sea—" she beamed at the assistant "—I always wanted something similar, to remind me of them, a little bit, you know?"
"I think that sounds beautiful, dear… Let's hope that one day, that wish comes true…"
Misty held her hand out in front of her, admiring the way her finger looked, dressed in such an accessory. The light from the globes above them, hit the diamond in the middle, causing the object to shine beautifully. Ash found himself looking at Misty once again. He wasn't exactly aware of it, nor could he control it, but a look of tenderness overtook his features as he drank in her beauty.
Seeing her, with a ring on her finger got him thinking about the day when she would actually be engaged and how the only person he could ever imagine proposing to, was her. There was always a reason he held her in such high regard. Out of all his other companions, there was a reason why she was always a cut above the rest… why she always would be. Subconsciously, he already knew that she was it for him… he knew he wanted more than the friendship they had… he knew that she was the one. He knew from the moment she fished him out the river on the first day of his journey, that they would be in each other's lives forever. Looking at her, the accessory twinkling on her ring finger, made him realise how much he did like her… that he was indeed, falling in love with her. Had he fallen in love with her already? Did that same subconscious know this already and that's what drew him to her door, when everything else seemed to crumble? Why was it so hard for him to accept? Why was he so scared to say it? He wanted them to be together…
Gosh… he hated when Brock was right.
"What are you thinking about?" Misty's voice pulled him from his thoughts, her eyebrows knitted together in question.
Ash shook his head, his expression overtaken with a tight smile. "No-nothing. But, I think I found something over there for my mom…"
Misty nodded. With a final glance at her finger, she pulled the ring off and handed it back to the shop's assistant who took it away. When it had disappeared, she turned to Ash, who had disappeared to the back of the shop, where a cabinet holding the store's bracelets was situated. With a smile still glued to her face, she followed him to where he was standing.
"What about that one?" he asked her, pointing to a bracelet behind the glass. It was silver and beautiful, a dainty chain holding a single charm; it was a heart shape, surrounding an infinity sign. Misty looked closer, noticing the infinity sign had the words "Mother" and "Son", carved into the top and bottom of the symbol. Sure, it was a little cheesy, but for the gift's recipient, it was perfect.
"I think it's wonderful," she beamed, impressed that Ash had picked something she knew Delia would absolutely love. The red head was certain she would have had to talk Ash out of buying his mother a cap or some jewellery made out of candy, but much like his clothing, his taste really had improved.
"Great! I'm starving!" Ash said, rubbing his stomach eagerly. "I'll pay for this, how about you and Pikachu go get us a seat at that café down the street?"
"Okay," Misty smiled, Ash leaning over to offer Eevee a scratch on the head, before Pikachu leapt on to Misty's shoulder as the entry bell rang, signalling their exit from the shop.
"That boy is always thinking about food, huh Pikachu?"
"Pika!" the little mouse chimed in agreeance as they strode down the crowded lane.
Granted, Misty was starving too, but it was always so fun teasing Ash for having such an appetite… it wouldn't be nearly as entertaining if he started teasing her about hers too!
When the restaurant came into view, Misty, Pikachu and Eevee, found a quiet spot by an upright heater, outside.
Today was a success so far… and with some food in their bellies, it was about to get a whole lot better.
…..
By the time they had arrived home from their shopping trip, Delia had also made it back from her visit to the Xanadu Nursery. On the hunt for some 'frost resistant plants', to keep her garden in full bloom throughout the winter season, the older woman's quest had started and ended at the nursey, in which all the plants that filled her garden came from in the first place.
"Oh Ash?!" Delia called, waltzing into the living room, where Ash and Misty had been sitting for the past hour, playing board games in front of the fireplace. Mrs Ketchum smiled to herself, as she watched them laughing, Pikachu and Eevee playing happily on the couch behind their trainers. Delia wanted nothing more than to officially welcome Misty into their family as her daughter-in-law, but she knew that would require Ash finally admitting that he saw the girl as more than a friend and knowing her son, that would not be happening any time soon.
"Yeah Mom?" the boy replied, uninterested in her question as his focus pulled him into the game on the table in front of him. Misty had not lost a single game of chess since they had been sitting here and it was beginning to annoy him.
"Check mate again, Ketchum!" Misty bellowed, Ash's head falling into his hands as a large groan emitted from his mouth. The red head knew he had no idea what he was doing, but he looked so cute when he was concentrating and she loved watching him try.
"Sorry Mrs K… what were you saying?" Misty apologised, realising she had interrupted the older woman's words from moments ago.
"That's okay, dear—" Delia waved her hand in dismissal, "—I was just saying that Professor Oak called earlier. He said he thought Ash would have gone to see him by now. I told him you were just relaxing at home for a few days, Ash, but I think you should pay him a visit soon…"
Ash nodded. He had meant to go and see Professor Oak and his pokemon but he knew a visit to the lab would mean he'd get questioned about his progress as a trainer… and… about his plans to challenge the Elite Four… questions he wasn't ready to answer.
"How about we go now?" Misty shrugged, offering Ash a smile in support, which caused the boy to perk up a little bit. There was still a few hours of daylight left and the lab was only a short walk away. She stood up and held out her hand for Ash to take, which he did, pulling himself up off the living room floor.
"I think I'll come too!" Delia announced, "Mimey has had so much fun playing with Pikachu, it'll be nice to let him run around for a change. He loves housework, but he is still a pokemon after all!"
"Great idea, Mrs K! I'll get my pokemon too!" Misty enthused, making a beeline for the stairs.
"Wait!" Ash cried out after her, resulting in her to stop dead in her tracks at the foot of the staircase. "You're going back to Cerulean?!"
Misty laughed in response.
"What?" Ash threw back, folding his arms in annoyance, clearly unimpressed with why she found his question so funny.
"I'm not going back to Cerulean! I'm getting my bag… from your bedroom," she chuckled again.
"Oh?"
"My pokeballs are in my bag. Surely you didn't think I'd leave my pokemon alone at the gym! Plus, you never know when Team Rocket could be lurking!" she winked, leaving Ash laughing, as she dashed up the stairs.
"Alright! All set!" Misty sang, heading back into the room and scooping up Eevee, her red back pack hanging from her shoulder.
"Come on, Pikachu," Ash said, the little mouse hopping onto his shoulder. Somehow, Ash felt better knowing Misty was coming with him… and at least with his mom there, Professor Oak wouldn't spend the whole-time asking Ash about his training regime… or lack thereof.
"Wonderful! Let's go then, shall we? Mimey! Off we go dear!" Delia called, dousing the fire with a bucket of water to extinguish it and heading towards the door.
And with that, the three of them (and their pokemon, of course), headed off in the direction of Professor Oak's Lab.
The walk had been brief and relatively quiet, aside from Delia and Misty chatting away happily, about the menu for Christmas Lunch.
Ash focused on familiarising himself with his surroundings, it had been so long since he had seen Pallet Town in the Winter. Before he had a chance to take it all in, the lab came into view, the trio trudging up the snow-covered driveway and to the front door.
With a strong tap, Ash's knuckles grazed the large, wooden door, which was opened almost instantly. They were taken inside by one of the lab assistants, the Professor meeting them on their way through the foyer.
"Ah, Ash my boy! What a pleasant surprise!"
"Hi Professor, how are you?"
"Very well! I see Pikachu looks healthy, I'm sure you're bursting to catch up with the rest of your pokemon. They should be outside, we've set up a bonfire to keep all the pokemon warm while they play."
Ash nodded, an awkward smile gracing his features.
"C'mon… Let's go outside," Misty voiced, taking Ash's hand and dragging him towards the glass doors leading to the back paddock. She knew Ash was nervous… and she knew, that considering he hadn't mentioned the reason for his return to her, his best friend, there was no way he'd want to tell Professor Oak just yet.
Delia and Professor Oak remained indoors, Ash's mom asking the Professor about his Christmas plans, and the older man taking a keen interest in Mr Mime's pristine, physical condition.
"You alright?" Misty spoke softly, when the pair had made it outside. Their hands were still interlaced, Pikachu and Eevee at their heels.
"Yeah—" he smiled "—I'm fine." He wasn't at first, but being here with her, had changed that.
"Ash?! Misty?!" a familiar voice called from across the field, belonging to a very familiar looking boy. There was a large fire alight, near where the man stood, an abundance of pokemon, basking in its warmth.
"Tracey! Hey!" Ash responded, Misty admiring the genuinely happy smile he flashed Tracey, forcing one to appear on her face also.
Tracey ran towards them, throwing his arms around Ash, who was forced to release Misty's hand, as the two men exchanged bear hugs; a brotherly reunion of sorts. When they broke apart, Tracey turned to Misty, pecking her on the cheek before speaking again.
"So! You're finally back home, huh? How are things?"
"Yeah… they're good," Ash replied. Things weren't as good as he let on, but Tracey didn't need to know that. "What about you?"
"Great! I have an amazing job, I'm learning so much everyday… and an even more amazing girlfriend! Things are great!"
Misty snickered at this statement, Tracey playfully rolling his eyes.
"I wouldn't exactly describe Daisy like that, but, I guess she's okay…" the red head teased, earning a soft nudge from Tracey.
"Oh man! I forgot you two were together!" Ash added, clapping his friend on the back "Congratulations Trace, I'm glad you're happy…"
"About time you settled down too, don't you think?" Tracey teased, throwing a subtle wink Misty's way, the red head pretending that she didn't see it.
Ash chuckled awkwardly, "maybe soon… we'll see."
Misty stiffened slightly at his words. Maybe he wasn't as clueless to women as she thought. Was it possible that he had matured and wanted a relationship just like anyone else at their age? It was probably just wishful thinking, she supposed… what else could he have said to Tracey?
"Hey Trace, is Marill around?" she piped up, deciding to derail the conversation and switch up the topic.
"Yeah! Should be over with the others," Tracey gestured towards the fire.
The red head nodded, offering him a tight smile, before moving off in the direction of the bonfire, ablaze on the other side of the field. Ash felt himself wanting to follow her, but decided against it, not willing to give Tracey any ammunition to start making fun of him in the same way Brock had a few days ago.
When she reached her destination, Misty reached into her backpack and pulled out a pokeball, spotting Marill instantly as it kept a careful watch of the water pokemon around the flames. She smiled to herself, the little, blue creature acting so much like Tracey and making sure everyone was safe and accounted for. Tossing the pokeball in her hand out in front of her, Azumarill appeared popping out from beyond the bright light.
"Go have fun, Azumarill!" Misty encouraged her pal, Azumarill scurrying off to Marill's side, just as she suspected.
"You're looking well, Red!" a voice called out from behind her. Misty didn't have to be a genius to work out who it belonged to… he was the only one to call her 'Red', after all.
"Not looking so bad yourself, Oak!" she threw back, Gary laughing as he trudged across the snow-covered grass, Umbreon at his side.
"Veeee!" Eevee sang out when she caught a glimpse of the larger pokemon. Bounding from Misty's arms, the little creature skipped over to greet Umbreon, Misty smiling fondly as they said hello to one another.
"How are you?" he asked, pecking Misty on the cheek casually.
"I'm good," she smiled, "how about you?"
"Eh. Can't complain! But judging by the look on your face and the fact the Ashyboy is on his way over here, I'd say you're more than 'good'!" he smirked, Misty folding her arms hastily.
"What's that supposed to mean?!" she spat, Gary's smirk intensifying as Misty's face grew crimson in colour.
"You know exactly what I mean…" he winked, Misty cursing the day she drunkenly told Leaf about the crush she had on Ash, back when they were travelling. Although, it didn't take a genius to work that one out.
"I'm going to kill that girlfriend of yours!" she hissed, Gary chuckling at the statement.
"Can't blame Leaf! It's so obvious… always has been!"
"We don't like each other like that!" she retorted, Gary quickly catching her hand before her fist connected with his arm.
"Wow! Someone's touchy, aren't they!" he teased, Misty going to punch him again, but missing.
"I'll get you one day, Oak!" she grumbled, realising it was useless and that he would catch every punch she aimed at him. Gary laughed, wrapping an arm around Misty, in attempt to stop her poor attempt at an assault. In the end, she gave in, laughing along with him.
"Are we interrupting something?"
Misty detached herself from Gary, stepping back from him and smiling sheepishly as she shook her head.
"Ashyboy! Home at last!" Gary piped up, stepping forward and clapping his former-rival on the back. "How's it going Pikachu?"
"Pika!" Pikachu chirped, still hitching a ride on Ash's shoulder.
"What's new Gary? Or is it 'Professor' now?" Ash joked, extending the conversation.
"Oh, ya know, same old stuff, Ketchum! Just taking a break from my travels to help out Gramps here… And as for the Professor thing, I'll make an exception for you… you can call me Gary. I won't rub in the fact that you're still a loser!"
"Ouch! That hurt," Ash chuckled, clutching at his heart to highlight the 'pain' he was feeling. Unbeknownst to Gary, his words did sting Ash a little… he knew it was only banter between old friends, but he did see himself as a loser, especially now.
"Only joking Ashyboy. How are things with you, the last time we spoke you were what—about to battle for your eighth Kalos badge?" Gary continued, his tone more serious now as opposed to before.
"Oh. Yeah, I got it…" Ash muttered apathetically, trying his best not to continue the conversation, in any way possible. Misty picked up on his disinterest, moving towards him and trying her best to stop any further questions from being asked.
"And we are all super proud!" She said, pulling him away casually. "But! I think there are a few pokemon who are mega-excited to see you after so long. So let's go!"
Ash smiled down at her, thanking her for her assistance using his eyes rather than his mouth.
"That's true, I better go and help Gramps finish up inside! Smell ya later!" Gary commented with a wave, walking back in the direction of the lab.
"They've all missed you Ash…" Tracey told him, with a slight smile. "Hey Bulbasaur!" he exclaimed, calling out across the field. The grass pokemon sat amongst the flower patch. Similar to Delia, Professor Oak and Tracey had managed to set up a weather resistant area for flowers and berries to grow throughout Winter. Believe it or not, there were quite a few species of plants that could withstand such harsh weather.
Ash watched Bulbasaur, happily sniffing away at the plants, surrounded by a few bellossom, oddish and gloom. The raven-haired man decided to see if his pokemon recognised him, Tracey's voice not seeming to pull him from his flower-fuelled trance.
"Hey Bulbasaur, don't you wanna come say hello?!" Ash called, Pikachu squealed from his shoulder, saying the same thing in his own language.
"Bulba?!" Bulbasaur froze, looking around as if he thought the voices had come from his head. It wasn't long until he locked eyes with Ash, grinning widely and sprinting over from the flower patch in the direction of his trainer.
"Bulba- bulb- bulbasaur!" the creature exclaimed, Ash crouching down and greeting his friend as he jumped into the young man's arms.
"I missed you too, buddy!" Ash laughed, hugging Bulbasaur tightly. Tracey smiled fondly, walking towards the fire, to give Ash and his pokemon a chance to catch up.
Misty brought her hand to her mouth, watching on proudly as they reunited. Tears brimmed at her eyes as Ash and Bulbasaur chattered away. She supposed her emotions had something to do with the fact that she kind of understood where Bulbasaur was coming from. He missed Ash so much while he was away, and so did Misty… now that he was back, the happiness that overtook the little creature was overwhelming.
Pikachu jumped off Ash's shoulder, taking over and chatting happily with his old friend. Their trainer stood back up to his full height, happy that the pair were so excited to see each other.
Ash looked over his shoulder, noticing Misty wiping the tears off her cheeks. With a befuddled expression, he moved over and wrapped an arm around her shoulder, Misty reciprocating the action, and wrapping her own around his waist.
"What's wrong?" Ash asked, looking down at her. Much to his surprise, Misty started laughing, still brushing tears off her cheek. He turned to face her now, confused at what her emotions were trying to say.
"I'm okay… I'm happy," she spoke through a few tears. "Oh gosh, I don't even know why I'm crying—it was just Bulbasaur was so happy—and you were so happy—and it was so sweet!" the words tumbled out of her mouth without warning, Ash unable to stop himself from thinking about how cute she was.
Without a second thought, he reached out, cupping her face with his hand, and brushing a tear from her cheek with the pad of his thumb. Misty stopped talking, looking up at him timidly. Her stomach was in knots, her heart in her throat as she stood frozen in her place, goose bumps covering her body as his hand still stroked her cheek. Ash's eyes flickered from her eyes to her lips, Misty gulping as he looked at her, knowing she wanted to kiss him—for him to kiss her.
"So guys! Oh—"
Damn that Tracey.
Misty cleared her throat, jumping back from Ash but unable to stop the blush creeping up her neck.
"Umm—I-I better go and see if your mom's okay inside, Ash."
"Uh—yeah, oh-okay."
"Watch Azumarill and Eevee for me, Trace?" Misty mumbled as she passed Tracey on the way to the lab door.
"Yeah, no problem!"
When she disappeared inside the building, Ash sighed, placing his hands on his knees and attempting to catch his breath, like he had just run a marathon.
Tracey looked over at him, a cheeky smirk present on the pokemon watcher's face.
Ash rolled his eyes. "Not a word."
Tracey laughed, shaking his head.
It was hard to bite his tongue, but Ash had ordered him not to say a word.
Too bad.
He had several words to say to him.
…..
After a few hours of catching up, Ash had insisted on helping Gary and Tracey feed and recall the pokemon, wandering freely around the snow-covered field. He promised Bulbasaur and his other pokemon pals, that he'd be back to see them soon, ensuring them he would not leave it this long between visits. By the time night had fallen upon them, Delia had headed home with Mr Mime, determined not to miss her night time soap. When they were going to go off with her, Professor Oak became insistent that Ash and Misty stay for some pizza around the bonfire with himself, Tracey and Gary. After a few taunts from Gary, Ash decided to stay, the group settling into some chairs as they chowed down on slices of pepperoni and cheese.
The conversation was kept pretty light, Ash resorting to asking the Professor questions that would require long lectures as responses, to keep the older man from asking about Ash's progress in the Kalos League. Misty chattered happily to Gary and Tracey, Eevee snuggled up to Umbreon in front of the fire. The pair had not really spoken since their 'almost' kiss, if you'd even call it that, an awkwardness falling upon them for the remainder of the afternoon. It killed Ash, he instantly regretted letting himself get so close to her, wanting the uncomfortable feeling between them to vanish.
"Well Ash, I'm going to head on inside. I do I hope I see you all at my Christmas Eve Bash tomorrow night. It's going to be a remarkable party," Professor Oak beamed at him, clapping the young man on the back before deciding to return to the comfort of his laboratory.
Ah. The Christmas party. All his friends would be there… and their dates. Misty probably would ask her own boyfriend, just his luck. Beside the fact that seeing her with someone else would break him, Ash wasn't really in a partying mood with all that was going on… but is wasn't as if he had a choice, his mother would make him attend, she wouldn't want to offend 'Samuel' as she affectionately called him. Professor Oak was quite fond of Ash, the younger man knowing how much his attendance would mean to the Pokemon researcher.
"C'mon Pikachu…" Ash began, his tone rather downcast. "Let's go for a walk."
Misty eyes wandered to the place where he was sitting. She watched him rise from his chair, a frown on her face as he began to stroll away from the bonfire. He looked… sad? Had she caused that? Surely not. They had barely said a word to each other after his reunion with Bulbasaur and prior to that moment, they were fine with one another. She wanted to go after him, but he probably needed his space… she had to respect that.
Tracey had left his own seat, throwing a few logs into the fire pit, ensuring the flames were well lit, keeping them all warm for at least another hour or so. This left Misty and Gary sitting side by side, silence falling among them for the first time that night. As kids, the spiky-haired boy used to annoy the absolute crap out of her. Mainly because of his overwhelming ego and cockiness… and the fact that he used to belittle Ash, which made her want to punch him square between the eyes. Then again, such an action would prove how much she cared for Ash, and she wasn't ready to let everyone know of her feelings back then… hell, she wasn't ready to admit anything even now; everyday was a constant battle in her mind, one side telling her Ash Ketchum was the love of her life, the other side telling her to move on- he's not interested. Bringing her mind back to the subject of Gary Oak, she was thankful for their friendship nowadays and despite his constant teasing and sarcasm every now and then, he could actually be filled with some amazing advice… though, the boy was studying to earn a doctorate in pokemon studies, so his intelligence wasn't exactly surprising.
"What's up, Red?" he asked, nudging her slightly with his elbow.
Misty shook her head, refusing to look him in the eye.
"You know… we've known each other a long time…" he stated, leaning back into his chair and folding his arms, "I also happen to be pretty observant…"
"Your point?" Misty huffed, meeting his eyes with a blank stare.
"My point is Waterflower, that I know when that look takes over your face, it's usually because of Ketchum… so what's going on inside that pretty, red head of yours?" His tone was calm, though Misty picked up on the hint of consideration in his voice.
She was quite observant too, you see. Gary would put on the big, tough-guy persona, but deep down he wasn't as egotistical as he seemed (okay, it was definitely there BUT), he actually gave a shit about his friends… and Misty happened to be one of them.
"I don't know if I should tell you…" Misty sighed, looking away from him and focusing her attention on the fire.
"Hmmm. I guess I could speak to Ashyboy instead—"
"No!" She took that back, he was an ass.
"Then what is it?"
"I don't know… I'm just worried about him, I guess…"
"Because you like him, right?"
"Yeah…" Misty's hand flew up to her mouth instantly, "I-I mean no!" she spluttered, but Gary's stupid signature smirk was already plastered on his dumb face.
"Please Misty, it's obvious… to everyone besides the two of you though, clearly!"
"Stop it Gary. My feelings are my feelings… I know what they are. There is no way you or me or anyone can tell what's going on inside his head…" she cocked her own head in the direction in which Ash had headed moments prior, as if to ensure Gary could understand who's head she was referring to.
"I overheard Delia telling Gramps that Ash stopped by Cerulean before he got to Pallet… is that right?"
"Yeah?"
"Well, he wasn't there for a quick vacation before coming home. Don't play dumb with me, you know he was there to see you…" Gary raised a stern eyebrow, as if trying to coax Misty out of her state of apparent denial.
"It's on the way here from Kalos... That doesn't mean anything!"
"Misty!" he groaned, massaging his temples in frustration. A sigh escaped his mouth and he rolled his eyes, deciding to take the conversation in another direction. "Okay," he began. "When I'm feeling my lowest, or when shit doesn't go my way, do you know where I usually end up?"
Misty shook her head, stumped as to where the conversation was headed.
"Leaf's. In one way or another, I always find myself in her company. Can you guess why?"
She could guess… but she didn't want to, so she stared at him expressionless, blinking as if asking him to continue.
"Because I love her. She makes everything better. Even just sitting with her, not doing anything… it lifts me out my slump—"
"But Ash and I aren't dating… we aren't in love…" Misty threw back, more timidly than anything.
"Seriously. Wake up!" Gary chuckled, Misty narrowing her eyes at him. Who was he to tell her to wake up! Grrr, that Oak. Somehow, he took her eye roll as an invitation to continue. "The boy's in love with you, Red. He has been since we were all kids… he came to see you first, BEFORE HIS OWN MOTHER might I add, because you are his Leaf… you make everything better, even without talking he knows everything will be okay!"
Misty sat there stunned for a moment, Gary's words piercing through her skull like a knife through butter. Ash had not wanted to talk to her about his return… but he wanted her around, he practically begged her to come to Pallet. Last night, he didn't move from the couch, even with such a horrendous movie choice and he held her close, as if being separated from her would pain him… and Oak was right, he hadn't even told Delia, his own mother, that he was coming back to Kanto when he knocked on her front door in Cerulean City.
"Oh my god…" Misty mumbled.
"Figured it out?" Gary smirked, resulting in Misty to face him, her eyebrows scrunched together as her mouth hung open. "What is it now?" the young professor questioned.
"What the fuck am I going to do?!" she attempted to shout, but her voice failed her, coming out as something just above a whisper.
"What do you mean? Tell him you love him too…" Gary stated matter-o-factly.
"I-I-I can't… I just got him back. I can't ruin it! Please Gary, you can't say anything to him." Misty practically begged the boy across from her, her eyes filled with desperation.
Gary sat quiet for a second, as if debating with himself, deep within his mind, until a sigh forced him to part his lips. "Fine. I won't say anything… for now. But you need to speak up before he leaves, otherwise you could miss out on your chance… and you'll both lose each other, for good."
Even though they were melodramatic, Gary's words rang true as they reached her ears.
She nodded slowly.
Tell him… or lose him…
She just hoped Ash would stick around for a while, so she wouldn't have to say anything.
But, Gary had a point… a good one.
She was now more confused than ever.
…..
Ash trudged through the snow, Pikachu frolicking among the powdery material before him. The little mouse looked quite content, prancing around, watching his feet create tiny, little footprints, a stamp marking his journey across the field. The bonfire was far in the distance now, Ash folding his arms to keep his body warm, as he reached the property's boundary, he leant against an old Oak tree, smiling at the subtle reminder of the family who owned the land on which it grew.
Standing there gave him a chance to really think about what had transpired between himself and his best friend. He wanted to kiss her, oh god he really wanted to, but not like that… not without telling her that he'd dreamt of having her lips on his since they first met… of course back then he didn't know that, but thinking about it now made him wish that he had. His mind forced him to dissect his decision to fly to Cerulean, earlier in the week. He kept trying to tell himself that it was because 'he missed her' and it was on the way back home, and both of those reasons were true… but he knew they weren't the only ones, the most important reason, he just couldn't admit, he was afraid it would ruin everything… and it could- If she didn't feel the same way.
Ash released the long breath he hadn't noticed he was holding, and tried to focus directly on Pikachu, still running around under the star-lit sky. A warm smile graced his features, at least Pikachu would be at his side forever, they'd never part, Ash was sure of it. Resting his head against the tree behind him, the shimmery backdrop above him, stole his attention. As kids, he remembered Misty's obsession with the night sky, and how he always found it so silly… now, he appreciated how beautiful it was; the way the stars danced above them gracefully, the moon shining proudly, sharing its pride in the form of a strong, white beam, radiating down on the spectators below. It was beautiful… she was right. It was almost as beautiful as her. He allowed his eyes to linger on the scene for a few moment's longer until Pikachu pulled him away from such a sight.
"Pi?" His ears twitched, jolting him upright, the snow angel he'd created at Ash's feet, long forgotten.
"What is it Pikachu?" Ash asked, slightly concerned at the rodent's random behaviour.
Pikachu scurried up the fence, resting on a post, his ears still twitching wildly.
Ash moved closer to him, his own brown orbs darting between his yellow pal and the forest in the distance. A soft rustle grew from beyond the trees, Ash straining his eyes in attempt to work out what could be responsible for the noise. The sound grew louder, as a flitter of white wings appeared from the bushes.
Pikachu began to chatter gleefully, his trainer still without an inkling of what was going on.
"What is it Pikachu?" he questioned again, Pikachu still unable to answer, immersed in the excitement of the scene unfolded before them.
A pokemon finally appeared from behind the trees, the white wings Ash had seen earlier belonging to the being in front of them. He studied it carefully, still too far away to realise what or who the creature was. It moved closer to them, the young man picking up on the red and blue markings across the pokemon's torso. It seemed to be studying them too, as if it knew them, but wasn't certain if they were who it thought they were. Before Ash had a chance to react, the creature chirped, matching the same excitement present in Pikachu's voice. It flew directly at them, until it connected with Ash's chest, sending him tumbling to the ground.
"Pi pi pi!" Pikachu exclaimed, jumping from the fence post and hurrying over to Ash's side.
Unlike his pokemon, he was still confused, and cold, considering he was now sitting in the snow. The pokemon hovered in front of him, its eyes seeming to fill with tears, as it looked Ash in the eye.
It was then, that it hit him.
"Togepi?" Ash questioned, shaking his head before reminding himself that wasn't its name anymore.
"Togetic!" the pokemon nodded enthusiastically, not caring that Ash had spoken the wrong name.
"Pi pi pi!" Pikachu exclaimed again, jumping up and down, before bounding up Ash's arm, standing on his shoulder as if trying to get a better look of his friend.
Ash's face softened. The look of confusion replaced with one of joy, as tears began to cloud his eyes also.
"I'm so sorry I didn't recognise you," he blubbered, wiping his eyes with the sleeve of his coat. Togetic collided with his chest again, Ash wrapping his arms around the pokemon who squeaked happily in his arms.
It was hers. Misty's Togepi, now Togetic, had emerged from the forest as if Santa Claus himself had granted a Christmas wish specifically for her. Ash laughed as the pokemon pulled away, flying around him in circles showing them just how excited it was to see them.
With the appearance of such an unexpected guest, Ash's mind began to swirl with thoughts of her. She had gotten emotional seeing him reunite with Bulbasaur, he couldn't imagine how she would feel seeing Togetic after almost a decade apart. It was then that an idea struck him. One of the best ideas he had ever had.
"Togetic… can you help me with something?" Ash asked, the pokemon nodding eagerly in approval.
Misty would be in for quite a shock in a couple of days' time.
For a moment, Ash had forgotten about their 'almost' kiss, his focus now, on giving her the surprise of a lifetime.
He owed her that much.
…..
"Bye guys! See you tomorrow night!"
Tracey had waved off Misty and Ash, the pair exiting the Lab together, deciding it was probably time to head back home. Pikachu hitched a ride on Ash's shoulder, as per usual, his trainer's arms occupied by the little, brown fur ball that was Misty's Eevee, sleeping soundly in his grasp.
"Are you sure you don't want me to carry her?" Misty offered, smiling up at him. Despite her conversation with Gary, she was trying her best not to make things awkward between them, pretending she hadn't heard Professor Oak Jr's theory.
"It's okay," Ash reassured her, "she's comfortable and I would hate to wake her up…"
Misty nodded, her heart swelling in her chest at his comment… it was too sweet for her to handle.
Cool it, Waterflower… We aren't making it awkward. Don't make it awkward.
She was somewhat relieved when Ash's words filled her ears once again. "So…" he uttered, "are you coming to Professor Oak's big Christmas Eve Bash tomorrow?"
Misty shrugged, "well… I wasn't going to, but now that I'm here, I guess I may as well."
"Yeah… It'll be fun," Ash mumbled, his tongue getting the better of him as words continued to fall from his mouth, "and I guess you could bring your date from the other night, he'll probably enjoy it too…"
Misty's head snapped up in his direction, her eyes narrowing in confusion. "W-what do you mean?"
"Oh. Just that Tracey mentioned something about being able to bring a date, and I thought you probably wanted to bring him… Daisy said something about you guys being together, when you left the other day…" Ash blurted, unable to control the literal word vomit passing his lips.
Misty sighed. She was going to kill her sister.
"Ash. Georgio isn't my boyfriend… well he was once… but—well, I should have never went on that date, I would have much preferred watching you suffer through another chick flick," she chuckled softly.
A smile tugged at Ash's lips. "So you aren't seeing anyone? I-I mean, you two aren't together anymore?"
Misty shook her head, "Nope!" she said, the 'p' popping slightly between her lips.
"Well… in that case—" Ash looked down at her, a blush dusted his cheeks, but he knew should wouldn't be able to see it in the dark (thank goodness!) "—would you maybe want to go together?"
Misty blinked at him, did she hear that correctly?
"You know! As friends! Because we are… we are best friends and—"
"Ash!" she cut off his rambling, Ash thanking his lucky stars that she had saved him from embarrassing himself, as per usual. "I'd love to go with you… as friends."
"Great!" he cleared his throat awkwardly, trying to hide his obvious excitement, "I mean, cool…"
Misty shook her head, smiling to herself as they pressed down the road.
Friends. They were going together as friends… See? Gary had no idea what he was talking about.
