a few minutes earlier

"This girl you interrogated the other day, have you seen her much?" Captain Hitsugaya questioned.

"We have actually." Ikkaku explains.

He and Yumichika, along with a few of his comrades, strolled down the sidewalk. They, too, wanted to take advantage of the beautiful weather today.

"If you don't mind me asking, but why are you? For some information?"

"Nope. She made it abundantly clear she won't give up the arrancar's location. But that's not the case. Apparently, some asshole is stalking her. They broke into her apartment while she was out yesterday and attempted to kill her last night."

Captain Hitsugaya, along with Renji and Rangiku, stop in their tracks.

"Wait, what? Someone's targeting her?"

"Unfortunately."

"Why would they? Grudge?" Renji asked, disturbed.

"She doesn't know, and she doesn't have any enemies either."

"Hold on. Her attacker, were they able to see you?" Captain Hitsugaya asked.

Now that it was brought up, Ikkaku remembers Hiromi's attacker avoiding Yumichika's blade, and was running away from him.

"Now that you mention it, I think they saw us. I mean, Yumichika made a strike at them, but they effortlessly avoided his zanpakutō."

"Then it appears her attacker has some spiritual awareness if they could avoid Yumichika's blade. It could be another arrancar."

"It's possible, but I don't think that's the case. I think they're human."

"Either way, it's terrible. How is she holding up after all of that?" Rangiku asked with concern.

"The best she can, honestly. She lives alone, so Yumichika and I are keeping an eye out on her and providing her company when she needs it. I mean, we kind of have to protect her anyway since she is the girl that is hiding the arrancar from us."

"How about one of you stay with her while we're stationed here?" Captain Hitsugaya suggested.

Yumichika snaps an eager hand up with an enthusiastic grin.

"I'll be more than happy to volunteer!"

Of course, you would, Ikkaku thought bitterly.

Captain Hitsugaya gave him a look.

"I think not."

"Huh?" Yumichika gasped.

"I believe Ikkaku will be better suited as the girl's bodyguard. Unless you object to the task."

Ikkaku immediately stood straight like a solider, his chest puffing out, and trying his best not to cackle excitedly. "No objection here."

Ikkaku wanted to confess his interest in Hiromi, but he was concerned about being told it was pointless since he's a shinigami and Hiromi is human. And also, the fact Captain Hitsugaya would reassign Yumichika to be Hiromi's bodyguard.

Of course, they would have to leave it up to chance and see what Hiromi wears to give either of them the green light to stay with her. It is her decision, anyway.

"Then it's settled. Ikkaku will stay in the girl's company, while Yumichika stays where he is currently."

"But," Yumichika tried to reason but goes ignored.

"It's settled."

Yumichika's face falls, pouting like a child dropping their ice cream cone as Captain Hitsugaya resumed walking. Renji followed behind, lightly patting Yumichika's shoulder as he walked past. Rangiku soon followed with a small smile gracing her lips.

Ikkaku and Yumichika lagged behind, conversing amongst themselves, whispering hurriedly.

"Captain Hitsugaya may have appointed me as Hiromi's protector, but it's really up to her who she wants to stay and protect her."

"I want to agree, but I firmly believe it should be me to watch over Generous Beauty."

Ikkaku snaps his gaze on him, confusion and suspicion overwhelming him.

"Why are you so bloody eager to be her bodyguard, anyway? Is there something you're not telling me?"

"Nothing that you already know. And I'm not eager."

Yumichika picked up his pace, leaving Ikkaku to grow even more suspicious of his friend.

"If you're not eager, then why were you so quick to volunteer to watch over Hiromi, damnit?"

"Well," Yumichika started, contemplating how to put it.

"You know what, never mind. Forget I asked." Ikkaku grumbled, then followed him.

Ikkaku and Yumichika quickly caught up with the others. Rangiku glances over her shoulder at Ikkaku and Yumichika, smiling as a curious expression crossed her features.

"Why are you looking at us like that?" Ikkaku asked.

"I'm curious."

"About what?"

"This girl you're going to be looking after. Is she any pretty?"

Yumichika perks up.

"Generous Beauty is a sight to behold. Lovelier than any other female I've ever seen. She's up to par with my marvelous looks." Yumichika admits vibrantly with a flip of hair.

"Are you saying I'm not pretty?"

"Eh, don't take too much offense, Rangiku. He hasn't really taken a liking to any female until he's met Goldilocks. I mean, I didn't even know he had a thing for girls. It's surprising enough when he's just as much of a girl to begin with." Ikkaku says, smirking.

"Hey!" Yumichika snapped with a pout. "Quit calling me a girl, people! Just because I love beautiful things doesn't make me a woman."

"It does if you squint hard enough," Ikkaku drones.

Yumichika remained to pout.

Rangiku snickered. "Okay, she's pretty. Has she taken a shine to any of you?"

"Don't encourage them, Rangiku," Captain Hitsugaya groaned.

It was too late, though. Yumichika beamed beside Ikkaku, not caring about sharing his supposedly perfect friendship.

"Generous Beauty has already taken a shine to me. I mean, who wouldn't when I'm such a fine specimen of beauty?"

Ikkaku groans and rolls his eyes.

"Well, of course she has," Ikkaku started with a sour frown. "I mean, she was flirting with you when you first met her, Yumichika."

"I'm sure the girl was doing so because she thought he was human," Hitsugaya voiced.

"Nope. Hiromi was still friendly with him when she found out we were shinigami. Heck, she even said that Yumichika is cuter than me and digs his colorful feathers. I mean, she said I was attractive, but how Feather Boy is better looking than me is bizarre."

Ikkaku glances at Yumichika, noticing him with arms folded and with a dusting of pink on his cheeks.

"Feather Boy?"

"Maybe she likes pretty boys instead of rough, muscular men," Renji comments. "And not with shaven heads."

"Watch it, Renji. Goldilocks said she has a thing for guys with dark hair. So, you're definitely out of her league with your wild, flaming red hair."

"Shut up," Renji growled. "And is that her real name?"

"Of course not! It's just a nickname."

"What is her name, then?"

Ikkaku would have answered, but Rangiku talked over him.

"It sounds like someone is smitten with you, Yumichika," Rangiku said with a honeyed tone.

"I would be smitten too if I were her," Yumichika replied, his grin widening.

He mutters something else under his breath that Ikkaku had a hard time hearing.

"What was that you said?"

"Oh, um, n-nothing," Yumichika replied quickly, then sniffed.

Ikkaku wondered what the sniff was about, but decided not to question it. Yumichika glances over his right shoulder at the other side of the street. His eyes briefly wandered before he frowned and looked straight ahead, which was even stranger.

Hmm, Ikkaku wondered.

From the corner of his eye, he noticed a familiar face sitting at a café, causing him to pause in his step. Ikkaku then noticed they were with someone he didn't recognize. Ikkaku finds this sighting odd, since he was talking about Hiromi seconds ago. Even from afar, Hiromi's smile made his stomach flutter wildly and his heart to drum within his chest. She looked relaxed in the presence of her companion, but noticed Hiromi gripping a napkin underneath the table. The gesture made him feel queasy, and he had a powerful urge to shield her from whatever was upsetting her.

Ikkaku noticed something else. Someone at a nearby table is watching Hiromi, and not in a good way, either. They have this threatening look about them, and have ill intent towards the girl. Ikkaku then took in their body structure. They look eerily familiar to the person from last night. In fact, it is them. They are wearing the same hoodie. Whoever the asshole is, Ikkaku will not allow them to lay a hand on her.

He glances over at Yumichika, who is meandering with the others further ahead. Yumichika didn't see Hiromi, which he's glad.

Without second-guessing himself, Ikkaku rushes in her direction.

"Hey, Ikkaku, where are you going?" Yumichika called out when he noticed Ikkaku rush away.

"Don't follow," he quickly responds.

From behind him, he didn't hear Yumichika run after him while telling the others not to follow.

Ikkaku broke into a jog or, more like, an extreme power walk. His fast-moving legs made a pinwheel-like effect because of how quick he was going. Within a blink, Ikkaku made it to Hiromi's table, panting.

Phew, I'm a Power Walk Champion!

"Hey there, Goldilocks. It's nice to see you again."

"Ikkaku?" Hiromi replies in surprise, her eyes wide at his sudden appearance.

He opens his mouth to apologize for intruding on her when he hears Yumichika speaking. The sound of other rushing footsteps indicated the others followed suit.

What the hell? Why did he not listen to me? Shit! Captain Hitsugaya is here! He's going to turn this into an interrogation. I just know he will.

"Hello, Generous Beauty," Yumichika says with an overly enthusiastic smile and a small wave.

Hiromi's features brighten a little upon seeing him. She leans back and exposed her chest to him and Ikkaku, hoping they would notice the color of her top. She mirrors his smile with a light blush adorning her cheeks from the nickname and reaches to scratch behind her ear.

Ikkaku thought it was strange since he had seen Urahara do the same. He mentally stored Hiromi's nervous tick, along with her appearance, in his mind. He tried to meet Hiromi's gaze, but she kept her attention on Yumichika.

Come on, Hiromi, look at me!

"Hi, Yumichika. Nice to see you again."

"It is good to see you. Ikkaku and I were just talking about you. Are you doing well?"

Ikkaku and the other shinigami, including Starrk, were intrigued by the unusual friendliness displayed by the two.

"I hope it is good things about me, and I'm doing pretty well. I found out today I have a cousin, which put me in a good mood. Your company is certainly unexpected, but welcomed."

Yumichika quickly noticed the expression Hiromi flashed his way that only he would know. Instantly, he sensed something was amiss. He can't question her with his colleagues around, that's for sure. Yumichika has to wait until he and Hiromi are alone. Yumichika then realized Hiromi was wearing the requested color if she saw him next. Her exuberant peach cropped razorback emphasized her beautiful eyes and made her skin glow, which distracted him briefly. Yumichika then felt excitement flip within his stomach.

Hiromi decided, which he was honestly glad about after what had happened last night. It must have really shaken her up if she wants him around. Them sharing the spare bed was an interesting ending to their evening despite their hot and cold conversations. Yumichika slept wonderfully. He wonders if she slept well. He regretted not staying longer for her to wake. He thought about leaving without letting her know, but something deep within his core told him not to. Yumichika could have explained his absence with a long note. Instead, he drew a simple winking, smiling face, and put it where he knew she would see it. The coffee maker. He hoped the gesture put a smile on her face.

He flashes her a grin that is unseen by the others, along with a wink that Ikkaku didn't like.

Ikkaku wanted to call Yumichika out on his intentions, but refrained himself. He especially doesn't like how Yumichika is showing off his buoyant friendship with Hiromi to everyone. Ikkaku thinks Yumichika is manipulating Hiromi to find out where Grimmjow is. He would have to question Yumichika's motives privately before he does anything to break Hiromi's heart.

"Sorry to intrude on you two. You said this is your cousin, right?"

Ikkaku he looks over at Starrk. He instantly felt something off about the guy. Ikkaku has this sudden desire to tug Hiromi out of her seat, and put himself between her and her supposed cousin.

Starrk glared at Ikkaku blankly, hiding his confusion.

How does Hiromi know these two? He questioned to himself.

"Yeah. This is my cousin I spoke about, Akira. He found out through a genealogy test that I existed. Apparently, my extended family ousted my parents a long time ago. He visited me from Kyoto for a day or so," Hiromi responds while trying to catch Ikkaku's gaze.

Ikkaku narrowed his eyes at him, analyzing Starrk critically.

"Hello, I'm Ikkaku Madarame. This overly friendly featherbrain here is Yumichika Ayasegawa." Ikkaku introduced as he hooked an arm around Yumichika's neck, still glaring at Akira.

Yumichika glares daggers at him, missing the analytical gaze Ikkaku held. "Don't call me that."

"Hi there, handsome. I'm Rangiku Matsumoto. It's a pleasure to meet you." She replied with a cheery smile as she sat down next to him with a dreamy gaze.

Hiromi eyes Rangiku briefly, noting the woman's rather charming looks and her … watermelon-sized breasts. She suddenly felt self-conscious that she hoisted her own with her folded arms. Her action caused Yumichika to glance at her and flash her a knowing grin that went unseen.

Okay, Busty Blonde is Rangiku, Hiromi says to herself.

Hiromi inwardly groaned when she noticed Starrk's blush, knowing he would likely glance at the woman's cleavage. He surprised Hiromi when he kept his gaze on her, but smirked. Hiromi sensed his temptation to glance down as Rangiku's outfit struggled to contain her, but he refrained from staring.

"Hello," he drones half-heartedly while remaining to avoid eye contact with Rangiku, still smirking.

Pretend she's Tier Harribel, he says and repeats it a few times.

Rangiku pouts. "Aw, what's the matter, pumpkin?" She starts while tracing his shoulder with a finger. "Is my top too distracting for you to look at me?"

Starrk's smirk widens.

What do you think? He wanted to ask.

"I don't think it's the top that's distracting. Now back the hell off, lady. He's happily engaged to a wonderful woman back home." Hiromi quickly defends with a slight snarl.

"Aw, bummer, she's lucky then." She frowns while dreamily staring at him still.

Starrk still doesn't seem to mind her hanging on him, though. In fact, he's enjoying it.

Ikkaku glares at Rangiku briefly before continuing to introduce his friends. "Other than Miss Flirt, this is Renji Abarai."

Hiromi diverts her gaze to the crimson redhead named Renji, with tattoos framing his brows and jaw. She doesn't visibly react upon seeing him. Inwardly, Hiromi freaked out a little, chanting "hot guy alert" in her mind. She had seen him once before. Well, met would be a better term since Renji rescued her from the hollows that chased after her and Grimmjow. She didn't know what she was thinking then. Hiromi was unsure of how to defend herself in case things took a turn for the worse. Her aim was to entice the hollows for the Shinigami to notice, but what if none came? She would have been dead for sure. Thankfully, Renji was the one to spot her and annihilate the hollows in three swoops. Hiromi was quite impressed with his sword-wielding, plus he looked damn good fighting, too.

She finds him attractive, just like the other men she's met lately. So, Hiromi doesn't mind the extra eye candy.

After a brief, silent second taking in Renji's physique, her gaze slides to his alluring brown eyes.

He gave her a knowing look, silently agreeing to keep their meeting a secret. However, Renji flashes her a small smile and a wink that no one else sees, causing Hiromi to inwardly squeal.

"And Mr. Short Round here is Captain Tōshirō Hitsugaya."

"Don't call me Short Round?" Tōshirō bit.

She then glances at the white-haired kid named Captain Hitsugaya, who is scowling deeply.

Hiromi glares at the short captain when it finally clicks. She snaps her gaze back on Ikkaku icily, betrayal overwhelming her gaze.

"Seriously? You couldn't get answers from me the first time, so you bring in your comrades to interrogate me?"

"No, really. It's nothing like that, honest," Ikkaku quickly objects as he held his hands in front of him defensively.

"Mind if I interject," Captain Hitsugaya started, as he glared at Hiromi.

"Um, it would be best if you didn't," Yumichika tried to interfere, only to go ignored.

"Based on your threats to physically remove my comrades from your residence, it's clear that you pose a threat to us, including yourself. You're harboring a rogue arrancar who not only invaded the living world but severely wounded a friend of ours. We know what he is capable of. If you don't tell us the location of where you took him, I will resort to getting answers out of you."

Hiromi glares dangerously at the little man. "Let me ask you something. If you know his capabilities, why am I still alive? You don't know him as I do. He will never lay harm on me."

"What if, Miss Watanabe, he aims to gain your trust and blindside you when he has his opportunity? Your life is in danger. Now tell us where that lowlife is." He demanded.

Hiromi seethes. Her lips tighten into a thin line, and her eyes narrow dangerously.

"Captain, please," Ikkaku tried to interfere, only to get talked over.

"Lowlife? You don't know the true meaning of the term Hitsugaya."

Ikkaku noticed her voice cracking before regaining composure, even the flicker of pain in her dull eyes. He knows Hiromi has a troubled past with narcissistic abuse, but doesn't know the extent of it or what else could have made Hiromi hostile.

"I'm well aware of his actions," Hiromi continued. "Grimmjow shared with me all the details of his actions and the consequences they had. He informed me you all killed his fracción. I found it very distasteful and sympathized with him about losing his comrades. Grimmjow did what he thought was necessary to eliminate the threat to further his former employers' goals."

"From the sound of it, Miss Watanabe, you have chosen a side. You must be fresh out of the academy, and are unaware of who the enemy is. Or you are one of them hiding in a gigai."

Hiromi's sonic ears heard Renji scuff softly and mumble, "Not a chance."

She chooses not to say anything and keeps her attention on Hitsugaya.

"One of them? That's absurd. I am no Shinigami either. Even if I were, I would keep to my responsibilities when neither of you can do your job."

This caught Renji's interest.

"What do you mean by that?"

"You're supposed to help souls pass on, right?"

"Sure, but how does that relate?"

"There are three child spirits at my complex and have been lingering since their passing years ago. When I met them, those chains on their chest had shortened considerably and are close to transitioning into hollows. I've seen it happen before, but it was much quicker. You shinigami should have been there for those three. Hell, I've been looking for one of you to do your duty in sending them where they are supposed to be. Alas, they are still there. Mind you, I care for the children as I treat them like they were still alive and were my own."

"You don't have much faith in the shinigami, do you?" Rangiku inquired gently, butting in for once.

Yumichika was the only one to notice her deflate slightly and glance down at the table briefly.

"Not really, no. There's one I have some trust in so far, and that's Yumichika. I've lived with this gift of mine, seeing the dearly parted since I can remember. In my lifetime, neither of your kind was there to help send the people I saw die to pass on peacefully. So why should I trust the rest of you when you can't do your damn job?"

Ikkaku stares empathetically at Hiromi, now understanding why she keeps her guard up around them. She witnessed loved ones being consumed by hollows, maybe even worse.

Damn, that's a hard pill to swallow, Ikkaku thought.

He opens his mouth to speak, but Captain Hitsugaya interjects quickly.

"Whatever you witnessed in the past, I sincerely apologize for how it shaped your judgment towards us. It's sad, honestly. But we're getting off-topic. When you rescued that arrancar, did you not think of the consequences? And what were you hoping to gain from assisting him?"

"Why would I? It's not like I was hoping for any of you to help him, anyway. What makes you think I was hoping to gain anything? I gained something for putting myself in the middle of this war between your kind unknowingly — a friend. I needed someone to fill this empty life of solitude for the last three years, and I found it in him. Besides, Grimmjow needed a friend himself. I know the real reason he's here. I know all of his fears, strengths, weaknesses, and ambitions. He entrusted me with his secrets because he could trust me when no one else would."

Captain Hitsugaya's eyes widen at this. "Trusts you? Are you that naïve to believe him? Do you not understand the position you are in, Miss Watanabe? I will ask you again. Where is he? Or should I result in forcing answers out of you using your supposed cousin as motivation?" He threatens.

"Captain!" Ikkaku growled while the other shinigami stared wide-eyed at Captain Hitsugaya.

"You keep Akira out of this. If you so much as harm one hair on his head, I will physically engage in a fight with you. You do not threaten my family." Hiromi snarls.

"You don't threaten me_."

"That's enough, Captain," Yumichika interjects loudly, physically stepping between Hitsugaya and Hiromi.

Captain Hitsugaya glares icily at the lieutenant.

"Did you just_?"

"Interrupt? Of course, I did, and I advise you not to finish that sentence either. Generous Beauty made it abundantly clear she would not give up information regarding her friend's whereabouts. Threats and intimidation won't solve anything. I've seen firsthand what she is like when provoked," Yumichika explains.

"I don't care what she is like. I want answers. And I highly advise you not to interrupt me again, Lieutenant Ayasegawa."

"I will interject when the occasion calls for it, Captain Hitsugaya, sir. This is one of those moments. Now leave her be."

Captain Hitsugaya opens his mouth to berate Yumichika further, but Hiromi speaks over him.

"I appreciate you sticking up for me, Yumichika. I truly do, but I don't want you to face any consequences."

"Me defending you hardly calls for punishment, Generous Beauty. If anything, it's a firm talking to from Short Round, here." Yumichika replies with a smile and points his thumb at Captain Hitsugaya.

Hiromi softly scowls while the others stare again at their friendliness.

"Excuse me? You do not call me Short Round. It's a good thing I appointed Ikkaku as her bodyguard instead of you, Yumichika, because you are overly friendly with her." Hitsugaya replies.

Hiromi glances at Ikkaku, confused by what he meant. Ikkaku just gave her a look that he would explain everything later and flashed her a reassuring smile.

Starrk, who was watching the entire exchange, gaped at Hiromi yet glared at the short captain.

Whoa, she is displaying fierce loyalty to Grimmjow here. Hiromi would most likely be his bed partner if she were anything like us. Or, depending on how strong she is, Hiromi could be a high-ranking Espada like me. I believe Lord Aizen gained an unlikely ally considering that she is keeping someone of ours from him.

Despite his thoughts, Starrk knew he had to intervene and bring this to an end.

I got your back, Lass. You're a worthy ally.

"He's expanding his circle and showing respect to women, little man. Something you should have considered instead of approaching my cousin with hostility." Starrk finally voices, then turns his attention to Rangiku with a gentle smile.

"Would you be so kind to remove your arm from my person, miss?"

"Certainly," she replied, but remained close, which Starrk didn't seem to mind.

"After hearing everything, you were the first to confront my cousin and pressure her into giving up a friend I have yet to meet."

He directed this at Ikkaku, who stared at him with narrowed eyes.

"Now you bring this lovely lady, The Tattoo, and The Shrimp along. I was unaware of this, as I had just arrived in town and barely had time to speak with her beforehand. Is there a reason you need to intimidate and threaten her?"

Captain Hitsugaya regards Starrk sternly. "It's rare for humans to see spirits. Some in my circle are just like her. One of them is Ichigo Kurosaki, a shinigami like us. We firmly believe that_."

"Just because Hiromi can see spirits doesn't mean a damn thing. As Yumichika pointed out, interrogating her for answers about the guy's location is not the appropriate approach. She already told you she would not give up his location, and I'm damn proud that she's sticking up for the poor guy. If anyone other than Yumichika or this lovely lady approaches her again, I will take action. You don't fuck around with my family, shrimp."

Hiromi felt a bubble of pride well in her chest, her face softly brightening with a smile. And yet, she felt annoyed that he kept calling Rangiku pretty and shooting her flirtatious smirks. It doesn't help the busty woman is basking from the attention he's giving her. Why Hiromi would be jealous is unclear. She also doesn't like the fact he doesn't want Ikkaku near her.

Hiromi actually likes Ikkaku. He is protective of her, but not extreme, and respectful, even caring. Ikkaku doesn't overly praise her beauty, or flaunts their flourishing friendship for everyone to see. He has also shown interest in her struggles, and help him understand her. Him providing her comfort is also reassuring. The fact he loves her baking and cooking is a plus. Ikkaku checks every box on her list of what Hiromi wants in a partner. She just wonders how he is with the little ones.

"Shrimp?" The Captain snarls in irritation, disturbing Hiromi's thoughts.

"Well, you look like a child, Captain," Ikkaku uttered.

"Seriously, now!" He barks.

"I have to wonder, though. You say your shinigami. Aren't you supposed to be all skeletal-like, wielding these large scythes as weapons?" Starrk asked, waving his hand as he observed the people in front of him.

He hears Hiromi snort, who rightfully covers her mouth to hide the highly amused smirk.

"What the? Those are grim reapers! We are not_." Captain Hitsugaya stuttered.

"Is it not the same principle? You assist souls in passing on to the next life, as do they. So, there is no difference, little man." Starrk interjects while trying not to grin at Hitsugaya's flabbergasted expression.

"I, uh gah! I don't have time for this! Let's go, Rangiku." He storms off while turning a bright shade of red.

"Aww, do I have to?" She pouts while staring dreamily at Starrk still.

"NOW!"

Rangiku frowns with a heavy groan. "Fine. I'll see you around, cutie pie."

"I look forward to the next time."

She stood to follow, only to stop to eye Hiromi apologetically.

"Uh, even though my captain questioned you the way he did, he was only thinking of what was best for you."

"Intimidation is what you consider what's best for me?" Hiromi pointed out.

"I'll admit he was a bit too harsh on you. Although, you did kind of threaten us," Renji casually replies.

"To protect her family, Renji. You would do the same for anyone you hold dear, like Rukia. Generous Beauty values her family and friends. I commend her for it." Yumichika defends while glaring at the crimson redhead.

Hiromi stares at him in appreciation. "At least you get where I'm coming from. So, thank you, Yumichika. I trust you to some extent, but not completely. If you continue to play your cards right, I will."

Although you have gained more of my trust and respect; she wanted to say out loud.

Yumichika just provides her with an understanding smile.

"Fair enough, but I know you will, eventually."

"Eventually? You seem rather confident."

Ikkaku looks from Yumichika to Hiromi, then back on his friend. He can see there is something blossoming between them. Hell, their interactions prove there is some sort of attraction towards one another. Although he suspects Yumichika is working an angle and putting on a show in front of everyone. He doesn't like that thought of Hiromi's heart getting broken again by another guy a lot like the other exes. It made his stomach squirm unpleasantly. Ikkaku didn't make a good impression with Hiromi initially, but he's working on building her trust. He wouldn't be foolish enough to charm her for information. If it were the case.

He shoves his thoughts away then glances off to the side as the two converse, leaving him and the other shinigami out of the discussion. As Ikkaku looked around, he remembered the stranger glaring at Hiromi. He wonders where he had gone. There is no doubt in his mind the guy will return. He wants to warn Hiromi, but is unsure how to approach her while she and Yumichika are engrossed in conversation. Then it clicked.

"You better get going, Rangiku. Your captain is waiting for you," he says, as he pointed down the sidewalk.

"Oh, alright. It was nice meeting you, handsome," she says to Akira, who kept eyeing the busty woman with a smirk.

Rangiku then turned her attention on Hiromi, who remained to talk with Yumichika.

Oh, well, she says to herself, then made her silent exit.

Renji watches her leave before regarding Ikkaku.

"I'm heading back to Orihime's place. I'm sure Rangiku will be awhile since she will try to calm down, Captain Hitsugaya."

"So, you're staying with Rangiku, huh? I expected you to leech off of Urahara."

"Surprisingly, he doesn't want me there for some reason."

Ikkaku blinks at this, his brows creasing a little.

"Huh, that is odd. Usually he doesn't mind having company."

"I'm sure he has his reasons, but I will not pry."

Renji glances over at Hiromi and Yumichika. He observes them for a moment before whistling sharply, promptly ending their conversation.

"Despite everything, it was a pleasure meeting you."

Hiromi felt her cheeks burn slightly when she noticed his smirk.

"Um, likewise, I guess," she stuttered while scratching behind her ear.

Ikkaku's lips screwed slightly from the nervous tick.

Why do I feel Hiromi is related to Urahara somehow? Ikkaku wondered.

"And so you know, our friend that got injured is Rukia. She didn't have time to defend herself when your arrancar friend impaled her with his fist. She recovered if you were concerned about her well-being. We'll find out where the guy is eventually, Hiromi."

"Hmm, I wouldn't get your hopes up too high, though, Renji dear. You'll never find Grimmjow, nor will I ever tell. I apologize for what happened to your girlfriend. I hope she is recovering well."

Renji blushes slightly, despite his gentle smile, and crosses his arms. "She is healing still, but Rukia is a tough cookie. You take care now."

And stay out of trouble, he wanted to add, but decided against it.

He gives her a knowing wink, then turns to leave her table, glancing back only once to flash her a soft smile. Hiromi returns the gesture.

Okay, I like Renji. He's not bad looking, either. Actually, he's a hunk, she says to herself.

There is a weird silence between her, Yumichika, Ikkaku, and Starrk now. Thankfully, it lasted for only a second when Ikkaku broke the ice.

"Hey Yumichika, why don't you head back to the Asano's? I'm going to hang back for a moment. There's something I want to talk with Hiromi in private."

Yeah, not so settle there, dumbass, Ikkaku said to himself.

Yumichika stared at him for a second before sliding his gaze on Hiromi. She is silently telling him that everything will be fine, and that they will talk more later.

He wants to believe that, but something deep within his core is telling him to stay. There's this strange sensation in the air and it doesn't feel good either. Something is wrong. And he has this sudden desire to remain by her side to make sure nothing happens.

Ikkaku's eyes narrowed as he noticed the subtle exchange of glances between Hiromi and Yumichika. He couldn't help but wonder what they were silently discussing, as it is suspicious. And yet, he has this peculiar need to protect Hiromi. Not just from the stranger he saw and Akira, but also from Yumichika. Why he feels that way? He's not sure.

Ikkaku then remembered the conversation he had with her before going on patrol. He said that she and Yumichika should come up with a color code if he is wanted at her place. Ikkaku gave her two options if she desired his company. Maybe Yumichika did the same and got the metaphorical green light that she wants Yumichika with her. That realization made his stomach churn and heart plummet to his feet. He can feel his lips pressing tightly and shoulder slumping.

He thought maybe they had something special blooming, but Ikkaku guessed wrong.

Damnit, he cursed to himself.

"I'll be fine, Yumichika," Hiromi says to reassure Yumichika. "Besides, I got my cousin with me if anything happens."

Yumichika's voice trembled slightly as he asked, "You're sure you'll be okay?"

"I'm sure. We'll meet again soon, okay?"

A corner of his mouth quirked up slightly, attempting to smile.

"Sure. I look forward to it. It was a pleasure seeing you again, Generous Beauty."

He glances at Akira, his eyes narrowing and folded his arms tightly.

"It was nice meeting you, Akira."

Starrk's brows wrinkled, grunting in response.

Yumichika unwillingly left Hiromi's table with a sigh, combing his fingers through his hair and frowning. The feeling from moments ago intensified with each step he took.

He glances over his shoulder to observe Hiromi from afar. He is greeted by a scene unfolding before him. Hiromi is staring at Ikkaku in astonishment as he suddenly collapsed to his knees and is holding Hiromi's hand. It looked like Ikkaku was apologizing about what happened moments ago, and is causing a bit of a scene. Well, not really. Everyone around them stopped paying attention to the ruckus and Ikkaku's sincere apology.

Something about the scene before him made Yumichika wonder if he has competition in gaining Hiromi's affections.

~ooo~

The moment Yumichika left, Ikkaku glances at Hiromi, relief settling on his shoulders, but still felt on edge. Akira is nearby, who is on Ikkaku's radar. And yet he has to keep his emotions in check, and try to hide his disappointment.

He had this sudden urge to drop onto his knees, snatch Hiromi's hand and apologize profusely about what happened seconds ago. He didn't want to cause a scene and make her uncomfortable or embarrass her.

"Ikkaku, what are you doing?" Hiromi questioned him, her voice timid and astonished.

"I am so sorry, Hiromi. That was not supposed to happen. I would not betray you like that and have Captain Hitsugaya interrogate you. That was out of my control. I simply _." He murmurs into soft skin.

"Ikkaku, please get up," Hiromi whispered, her hand reaching out to touch his shoulder.

The second Hiromi's hand touched him, Ikkaku finally realized what he was doing. He thought he had control over the urge, but apparently his emotions got the better of him. Especially when Ikkaku remembered the look of betrayal in Hiromi's eyes. He wanted to erase that image. Along with the sense of awareness, Ikkaku felt a sense of calm wash over him, soothing his inner turmoil. His fingers are wrapped around her hand, which an electrical charge zips and crackles from contact. Ikkaku noticed Hiromi had stiffened from his touch, but quivered excitedly. Even her body flushed.

What the hell was that?

"Ikkaku," Hiromi called out to him again, her voice quivering.

He quickly snaps his gaze onto hers. Even when they made eye contact, an intense spark ignited between them. Ikkaku hesitantly releases his hold on her and stood to his feet.

"Eh, so sorry."

"It's alright, really. I shouldn't have assumed_."

"It's okay, Hiromi. I know it came off that way when it wasn't my intention. I really just wanted to intercept a threat."

Hiromi gazes at him, her features becoming grave yet appreciative.

"I'm aware. Someone followed us here. Akira attempted to figure out who had been watching us until you showed up. I guess I should be grateful that you did. Who knows what could have happened if Akira confronted them."

"There would have been a brawl," Starrk remarks as he cracked his knuckles, while staring at Hiromi, who shrinks from his gaze.

Ikkaku caught it. He settles himself close to Hiromi, standing with his arms crossed and glowering at Akira. He also saw an opportunity.

"Now, that would be fun to see," he says with fingers twitching at his soul candy dispenser. "I could go for a brawl right now. I don't doubt you are one hell of a fighter."

Starrk's brow twitched. "Are you seriously trying to goad me into a fight?"

Ikkaku saw Starrk's fingers curl into a fist, and another reached towards his hip.

Protect Hiromi, he says to himself.

"Maybe," Ikkaku answers.

Both Ikkaku and Akira stare each other down, readying themselves for an opening.

"There's no need for violence," Hiromi said, turning to face Ikkaku.

She looks up at him pleadingly, urging him to settle down. Ikkaku conceded despite his desire to protect Hiromi from Akira.

I really don't like this guy, he says to himself.

"I know you love to fight, but I don't want you looking for one. Let one come to you when the gods deem your opponent worthy. Besides, I said Akira intended to figure out who was following us until you came by."

He wanted to say something about his suspicions towards Akira, but figured he'd wait when he and Hiromi are alone.

"You did. And I don't particularly care for your bitter undertone. But I don't think it's towards me. Honestly, I think it was a good thing I interfered. I would hate for you to get caught in the middle of an altercation and get hurt, Hiromi. Besides, I came here with the best of intentions. When I was huffing it over here, I told them to hang back instead of following. I didn't want Captain Hitsugaya to interrogate you. Again, I deeply apologize for what happened moments ago." He explained with sincerity.

Hiromi regards him kindly. "My apologies. Hitsugaya's interrogation left me in a sour mood, and I shouldn't have projected it onto you. So, I'm sorry, and thank you for apologizing."

Ikkaku suppresses a grin.

"You're welcome," Ikkaku then regarded Akira, his eye narrowing. "Despite my rudeness, it was nice to meet you, Akira."

Starrk grunts in return as he stared at the clean-shaven man analytically.

"I guess I better go. Take care of yourself, okay?"

Ikkaku momentarily turned away. His nerves going haywire from this unusual yet unbearable feeling coursing through him.

Why am I leaving her alone? I shouldn't leave her alone, He says to himself.

"Hey, Ikkaku," Hiromi hesitatingly called to him.

Ikkaku immediately stops to glance over at her, noting her uncomfortable gaze.

"What's up?"

"That guy you saw. Is he still there?"

Ikkaku glances over her shoulder amongst the tables and sidewalk. Nothing. Whoever was watching her was long gone now or lying in wait for her somewhere. He stresses a heavy sigh from his lungs before responding lowly.

"Whoever he was, he's not there anymore. He might have left while you and Hitsugaya were arguing."

It was her turn to sigh. "I can't say I'm relieved that the guy is gone, as I'm still on edge. I'm glad I don't have to look over my shoulder for them. Were you able to get a good look at him?"

"As far as specifics, no. He was wearing a hoodie, anyway. One thing is for certain, it's the same asshole that attempted to kill you last night."

Hiromi stiffened and bit at her bottom lip.

"He's being pretty bold in stalking me at broad daylight. I should just get the police involved."

"It might be a good idea. Be sure you are with someone when you go to authorities."

Ikkaku hesitantly grabs at his wooden sword that was at his hip, yanking it away from himself and held it to Hiromi.

"And um, uh, h-here," he says, his cheeks burning.

Hiromi blinks up at him, confusion and awe overwhelming her features.

"You, you're giving me your practice sword?"

"I'm letting you borrow it. Only use it if you absolutely need to. And don't break it either."

Hiromi presses her lips tightly together, blushing brightly as she took the wooden sword in her hand.

"Th-thank you. I'll be careful with it. And um, thank you for coming to my rescue. I really appreciate it."

Ikkaku provides her a genuine smile, and rubbed the back of his neck.

"You're welcome, hon," Ikkaku waved as he turned on his heels to leave, but stops.

The feeling from earlier returned, even his need to stay with Hiromi. Something is telling him not to leave her alone. Especially when he is suspicious about Akira. He looks over his shoulder at her, locking gazes.

"Are you going to be okay?"

Hiromi bit at her lower lip, shooting a fleeting glance at Akira, then back at him.

"Yeah, I'll be fine."

"Are you sure? You can ask either Yumichika or I if you need help, you know. Preferably me, though."

"I'm aware, but really, I'll be fine."

"Are you sure you'll be okay, Hiromi?" Ikkaku stresses as he stared Hiromi in the eye. He can tell she is uneasy about something, and wants to ensure Hiromi is safe.

Hiromi stares at him while biting her lower lip, pink gracing her cheeks while rubbing her palms together. Her lips curve into a soft smile.

"I'll be alright. Thank you for your concern," she replies, her voice soft with sincerity, and gazed at him in appreciation.

A corner of his mouth twitched into a half smile while maintaining eye contact.

"Alright, if you say so. If you need me for anything, you know where to find me, right?"

"I do, thank you." Hiromi says, smiling that reached her eyes. "And come by my place later. Let's say, seven o'clock?"

Ikkaku returned the gesture.

"I'll see you then, Hiromi. And stay out of trouble," he says with a wave, hesitating still in leaving her alone with Akira.

He just hopes his instincts are wrong and that she will be okay.

~ooo~

Hiromi and Starrk watched him leave in heavy silence, unsure how to break the awkwardness between them. It lasted for a moment until Hiromi eased them out of it.

"I'm sorry for dragging you in the middle of all that. It was pretty inconsiderate of me."

"It's alright. Considering that you came up with some outlandish tale of me being your cousin, the timeline for my arrival was on point. And what's going on between you and the bald one?"

"You mean Ikkaku? Nothing really. Just becoming close friends."

Hiromi saw a flicker of a smirk cross his lips.

"Seems rather quick, don't you think?"

"People can hit it off really well depending on their chemistry. It's kind of like that with me and Yumichika. Although, some of the stuff he says and does makes me a little uncomfortable."

"Then why don't tell him off?"

"Believe it or not, despite his antics and how I feel around him, I like him to an extent. Plus, I feel safe with him."

"Safe how?"

Hiromi thought about it for a moment. She remembered the few moments they had after the attack last night. He kept her safe from unwanted hollows and went after the one that landed just outside her apartment. Although Hiromi became frightened when he attempted to strike her attacker, she found comfort in his assurance that he would eliminate the person who tried to kill her.

"Knowing he will protect me from harm," she replies, bitting at her lower lip.

Starrk stared at her briefly before taking a sip of the slightly cooled coffee, grimacing.

"Ugh, yuck. I guess that's reason enough."

Hiromi regards him softly. "Despite dragging you into that rouse, thank you for playing along. Although, you could you have at least acted engaged to someone? You kept staring at Rangiku."

"There's no harm in flirting," he quickly defended.

"Maybe so, but she is a shinigami. You know, supposedly your enemy."

Starrk just shrugs.

"I can freely look without the concern of being struck by other females."

Hiromi blinks while cocking her head slightly.

Hmm, she hummed to herself at an opportunity.

"Really? Just how many of you are there?"

She watched him do a quick run-through in his head and fingers with pursed lips before answering. "Around twenty of us, give or take a few."

A peculiar gleam appeared in her eye when he mentioned the number of Espada members. She even has a cryptic smile.

"That many? I know it may sound absurd to you, but I'm rather fascinated by hollows. Well, not all of them. Not the ones I've seen transitioned, but that's a discussion for another occasion. Are you open to telling me about them?"

Hiromi leans on the table with eyes on him, hoping that he will talk about his comrades.

He finds this peculiar.

"Maybe later. How is Grimmjow holding up?" Starrk questions to direct the conversation elsewhere.

Hiromi was quick to notice his guard, which she instantly backed off. She considers her words for a moment before speaking.

"I suppose Grimmjow is fine. I haven't seen him much since I brought him to an old friend of mine for help."

Starrk stares, perplexed yet stunned.

Hiromi knew someone that could help. Okay, now there's a red flag, Starrk thought to himself.

"With an old friend of yours? Can you tell me where they are exactly?"

Hiromi stares, skeptical of his inquiry. "All I'm going to tell you is that Grimmjow is safe."

A thin brow rose as Starrk continued to stare at her, hurt swelling in his chest.

"He's safe? Do you not trust me, Hiromi?" He scolded.

The tone he gave off made her inwardly cringe and her stomach churn.

"I'm sorry, it's just _." Hiromi starts, only to be interrupted.

"You don't trust easily. I can tell. I wouldn't trust me either if I were in your shoes. So, I get it. I'll be on my way now." Starrk criticized as he glared at Hiromi bitterly.

"Coyote, wait_."

"Don't bother. I thought you trusted me, but apparently, I was mistaken. I'll see you around. Best of luck to you," Starrk quickly interjects.

He stands away from the table with a loud screech from his chair.

The sound grated in Hiromi's eardrums, where she visibly cringed. A hard lump then sat in her larynx as he started walking off.

"Coyote, wait! Let me," When Hiromi stood to rush after him, something made her stop. A rough hand lands on her shoulder.

"Care to explain who that was?" A familiar masculine voice asks from behind her.

Hiromi stiffens and trembles, internally freaking out and silently cursing.

He's back.
