"Any concerns that the month of festive fripperies and fiascos is upon us again, Holmes?"

"No, why should I be worried?"

"Don't you recall all the flaming Christmas trees and explosive chemical experiments that seem to occur at an alarming rate in December ?"

"Coincidences, Watson. The only worry is that this snow will dampen the criminal spirit and leave us with mind-numbing ennui."

"The snow will create ammunition for the Irregulars and their snowball fights."

"Truth. Perhaps you should discuss some holiday treats and hot cocoa plans with Mrs Hudson when she returns from her errands?"

"Good idea, Holmes. I shall."

"Do you hear carolers at the door, Holmes?"

"Yes, they have been coming up our street for the past twenty-eight minutes working their way East to West. Their main alto is fighting a slight cold given the rasp in her voice. They might benefit from another two bass singers in order to optimize the robustness of their carols."

"Perhaps you should join them and aid with your violin?"

"Ha! Watson, your pawky sense of humour strikes again, I see. Playing the violin in this cold would be futile. My fingers would freeze and the strings would fail against the icy cold. Better to add a flute player."

"Remember that case where the victim was hit on the head with a brass candlestick?"

"Yes. The thief was the nephew of the sister-in-law and thought he could make a fortune from the family silver."

"Ah, yes, that plan didn't really pan out for the nephew. But, I did hear that the victim made a full recovery in spite of that dreadful head wound."

"That's good. The family pet dog should be praised for that. Without his prompt warning bark alerting the rest to the intruder and the victim's injuries, who knows how long it would have taken to get him medical attention."

"Ah, yes. And he did get rid of all the candles in his household too."

"Oh?"

"Yes, the papers are saying he is DELIGHTED."

"Watson?!"
