Tim Bradford and Nyla Harper aren't what most people would call friends. They are civil and polite with one another but don't expect them to start telling each other stories or jokes that often. Nevertheless, they have great respect and admiration for each other, which showed when they went to rescue Angela in Guatemala.
And when Tim's relationship with Lucy became official, Nyla didn't congratulate them like the others did, instead, she gave them a knowing look, only acknowledging their relationship, as she is not one to show emotions to other people. Plus, she knew that they would eventually get together - everyone did honestly - but she got to witness the birth of their relationship firsthand. She never told anybody this, but she was also in the parking lot when Tim asked Lucy out. She was too far to understand what was being said, but as the saying goes 'eyes don't lie' and she thus understood that they were having more than just a friendly conversation.
Only James' ears got to hear the following thought - because Harper being Harper, she would not tell anyone else - but she genuinely thinks that Tim and Lucy look cute together, and that they make a really beautiful couple. Hence the fact that she was very disappointed when she heard that they had broken up, and thought it was a shame as she truly believed that they would have had an amazing future together.
After about six months of them being broken up, Nyla started to notice that they were making their way back to each other little by little, or with small doses if you prefer. And she was glad, because if she's being honest, she'd had enough of seeing two idiots in love avoiding each other.
As a way to celebrate the aforementioned fact (without actually putting it this way), she invited both Lucy and Angela out for drinks. And while Angela was finishing up on some paperwork, Lucy and Nyla made their way outside to the parking lot to wait for her. As their conversation was going, Nyla noticed a new bracelet on Lucy's wrist and commented on it.
"Yeah, Tim bought it for me," explained the younger officer.
"Well Bradford has got taste, it is really pretty, " noticed the older one, recognizing her Sergeant's efforts at winning his girl back.
"He does, but it is not a bracelet that is going to make me go back to him," continued Lucy.
"Well at least he's trying, you got to give him some credit for that, we all noticed, it's a good thing."
"If you say so. See, I understand that he is making efforts, and that he is trying to earn my trust back, but that's simply not enough."
Nyla is honestly taken aback by Lucy's response. She's always known her to be comprehensive, and grateful, and open, and not ... whatever the hell this is.
"Girl, the man is doing literally everything that you want, I would kill to have James listen to me like that."
"You don't understand, it's more complicated than that..." said Lucy toying with her bracelet.
"Oh I understand more than you think, trust me," retorted Nyla.
"Look, Tim is not the perfect man that I thought he was, or that everybody thinks he is. He is just ..."
"Let me stop you right there," she said cutting off Lucy. "I will not let you talk about him like that."
"And if you could please mind your own business Detective Harper..."
"I said stop it! I have never in my life yelled at a girl like this!" Nyla snapped. She was not going to hear Lucy speak badly of the man she is in love with on the only grounds that her feelings are hurt.
Angela was coming out of the station as Nyla said that, and upon hearing it, she stopped walking not daring to interrupt their heated conversation. She stood by the door watching from afar, preparing to intervene in case things got out of proportions.
"You don't know what it's like to be in Tim's position, but I do. After the shooting, and everything that happened with Lila, I crawled my way back to Donovan, literally begging him to forgive me and take me back." said Nyla, feeling tears building up.
"You know me all tough and heartless but I'm only like this because it broke me to take off this mask and lose all dignity kneeling in front of a man begging him to please not take my daughter away from me, to please accept my apologies and not go to court to divorce me. " she continued, tears now rolling down her cheeks as well as Lucy's. "Tim is trying Lucy, and he is putting his entire heart into winning you back, don't ruin it all out of pride. I understand that it's hard for you, but it's hard for him too. So I am now begging you so he doesn't have to, please cut the poor man some slack and acknowledge his efforts, because the kind of love that he's giving you, you will never find it anywhere else."
Lucy just stood there, looking at her feet, speechless, crying, kind of like a child who has just been told off by her mother after talking back. Harper was right, and she knew it. She was asking Tim to live up to standards even she couldn't hold onto. She had always been judging Donovan for what he does to Nyla, not realizing that she was slowly turning into him.
"I really am being a bitch, aren't I?" she said looking up.
"Yes you are, and that is very out of character, if I must say. " responds Nyla. A thing that she and Tim have in common is their undefeated bluntness, they have no filter, and are not ashamed of it. One could almost say that they're the opposite gender's version of one another.
"Thanks Harper." said Lucy pulling the detective in for a hug with no warning. Nyla isn't that big a hugger, but she hugged Lucy back nonetheless.

As if on cue, Tim came out of the station witnessing the moment. He just went and stood next to Angela who had been watching this whole time.
"I wonder how much money Lucy gave to Harper for her to agree to a hug." said Tim, jokingly.
Angela just hummed in return, making her way in front of her 'bff', as she calls him, something else being on her mind.
"Promise me something, Timothy." started Angela.
"Of course." replied Tim without a thought.
"The day you and Lucy have a kid, and I know you will... give him or her Harper's name. I know that you two aren't actually the best of friends but you owe her that."
Tim is taken aback by this statement because if there's anyone he would name his kid after, it's Angela, and she knows it, so why would she advise him otherwise? He really likes Harper but she's not the one to whom he'd do this honor. He opened his mouth to protest but Angela cut him off.
"Don't question it, just promise me you'll do it. And besides, I know you'll find a way to name one of your babies after me." she said smirking at him.
"Alright, I promise." said Tim, not able to go against his best friend's will.
"Lopez, you're coming or what?" called Nyla from afar.

As Angela made her way towards the voice calling her, Lucy quickly took off and made hers towards Tim. Once in front of him, she put her hand on his shoulders pulling herself up on her tiptoes. She gave him a rapid and soft kiss on the lips before pulling back and smiling at him.
"Thank you for the bracelet, I love it." said Lucy.
"Uh- you're welcome, I'm glad you like it." responded Tim, a bit surprised with her way less cold attitude.
"I'm going out for drinks with the girls but I'll see you later at your place, sounds good?" Lucy offers.
"Yeah, that sounds great, I'll see you later." Agrees Tim, still surprised.
Lucy then happily skipped her way back to the girls and into Angela's car. Looking at her go, Tim understood that Nyla had something to do with Lucy's changed behavior.
He thought to himself, "Harper isn't that bad a name for a little girl after all."
