~Chapter 15 Tense Beginnings~

Lewis sighed at the counter as she finished her coffee, deciding she was awake enough for the day she walked over to the couch, Allison was glad Mileena was still asleep as she sat alone in the quiet.

She'd put on a brave face around the girl, but deep down she was terrified, not of Mileena, but of letting her down, of not being good enough to help her.

'I don't know what I'm doing' she thought to herself, thinking back to last night when Mileena sheepishly mumbled an apology for how she acted, and the way she relaxed when told she wasn't in trouble, 'I just hope I'm doing the right thing'

Raising her head she stared at the clock hanging on the wall and noticed it was half-past nine, 'Wow it's been so long since I had a lazy morning, I'm normally out the door by now' she thought to herself 'I should go check if Mileena's awake' Lewis stood up and made her way towards the bedrooms.

"Mileena, are you up?" she asked through the closed door, when she didn't get a response she opened the door slightly, looking inside she could see the hybrid curled into a ball on her bed with the covers draped over her, Lewis almost called out to her but stopped herself.

Looking at Mileena one wouldn't notice anything out of the ordinary, however Lewis could see no tension in the younger girl's features at all, Allison closed the door and leaned on the door frame with a small smile on her face 'I'll let her have a lie in'

Slowly Mileena's eyes opened with a groan, she sat up still holding onto the cover, unwilling to surrender it's warmth, she looked around the room before remembering last night 'That's right Lewis accepted me into her home' she thought to herself, she debated whether or not to go back to bed, looking at her pillow and seeing a not so small amount of drool ended the debate immediately.

She climbed out of bed, her face red with embarrassment, she reluctantly put the blanket back on the bed and shuffled to the door, after a quick trip to the bathroom she walked out into the living room to find her caretaker.

Lewis was sat on the couch with a book in hand and didn't notice her approach, "what are you reading?" she asked leaning on the back of the sofa.

The doctor jumped in her seat "jeez Mileena, you scared me" she said slowly releasing a calming breath, Mileena looked sheepish and muttered an embarrassed apology, "it's okay, did you need something?"

"I asked, what are you were reading?"

"It's a fantasy novel about a sentient sword, wielded by an evil knight" Lewis answered a smile forming on her face "the sword was made to do good but is forced to obey it's wielder"

"That sounds… sad"

"It's a tragic book, but I can't put it down" Lewis replied "there's just so much suspense on if one will corrupt the other"

Mileena didn't say anything else as she walked around the sofa and sat down, the silence was soon broken by a loud growl.

Lewis turned to face the embarrassed girl, "well I suppose we should get you some breakfast" she stood up and gestured for Mileena to follow her "I never did show you around the kitchen last night, did I?"

Over the next few minutes Mileena was shown where everything was kept and even tried to cook her own toast, only to severely burn it, she ate it anyway and tried again.

When the two women were sat down again Mileena was confused "what are we doing today?"

"Well I actually have the week off work so I can help you adjust to living here" she answered "so we can have a quiet day today if you want"

When Sonya entered the training room, she wasn't surprised to see Jade hard at work with a clearly frustrated look on her face, "You've been coming in here daily for three days" started Sonya, leaning on the wall by the entrance "are you going to say what's bothering you, or do I have to ask?"

"I have to get stronger" Jade replied without looking, switching from stance to stance.

"You mind telling me why?" sighed Sonya.

"Why should I tell you?"

Sonya didn't flinch at the bite in the Edenian's voice "because I asked nicely" she answered, she folded her arms and took a step forwards "or should I assume you're bitter about what happened in the Netherrealm?"

Jade stopped her movements and turning to glare at the major "don't try to know my thoughts"

"Well it seems that I'm a least a little accurate" the blonde bit back "so what was it exactly that's pissing you off?"

"I don't trust the company you keep" Jade snapped "and I don't know how you can trust her?"

"So that's it?, You just don't like Mileena?" Sonya asked with disbelief in her voice "Jade, you know nothing about her, you had one encounter with her two years ago, and because of that, there's no way she can change?" a defensive anger started course through her veins "or maybe you can't stand the idea that you could've been wrong"

The last statement wasn't a question and both women knew it, Jade levelled a fierce glare at the military woman "leave"

"No, I don't take orders from you" Sonya advanced, fists clenched at her sides "and I want you to admit I'm right"

Before either woman could throw the first punch, the entrance door opened revealing Johnny Cage "hey Sonya I was looking for you"

"What is it Johnny?"

"I know we still have to deal with Quan Chi, but Sub-zero has been talking about the Lin Kuei" he answered "I think he might bail if we don't do anything"

"Alright I should go talk with him" replied Sonya, heading towards the exit "think about what I said Jade"

Mileena lounged out on her bed, looking at the empty diary that Lewis had given her, she had said "it's to put your thoughts and feelings into" however Mileena's problem was that she had no idea what to write down.

She threw the blank book onto her desk before leaving her room, when she walked out to the front room, she saw Lewis watching the television that she hadn't noticed on her first tour, seeing it action for the first time had shocked her and nothing else, no matter how much Lewis said her fear of the unknown was valid.

Sitting down next to her caretaker to watch the tv, Mileena saw it was a news broadcast, she sighed out of boredom.

"Is something wrong?" Lewis turned to face her slightly.

"I was looking at the diary you bought me" She half answered "I know you said I could put my thoughts in it, I just don't know what I'm supposed to write"

"Mileena" Lewis said, making the young girl face her "there's nothing your 'Supposed' to write, you could put anything you want in it"

"Like what?"

"You could write your story and how what happened made you feel" Lewis replied "you could draw pictures in it, it's yours to do what you want with it"

"I think I know what to do now" said Mileena with enough joy in her voice that she'd be smiling if she could, she stood up and moved away from the couch "thanks for the help"

The hybrid jogged back to her room and sat down at her desk where she tossed the diary earlier, she opened to the first page and grabbed a pen from her desk draw and started writing.

"Dear Diary, my name is Mileena and my story begins two years ago..."
