~Chapter 19 Reaching out~
Mileena walked though the corridors of the base, thinking back on the past month since she had asked Sonya to contact Raiden.
Lewis had been teaching her more about cooking, she had even made dinner the night before, she only overcooked the chicken a little, Lewis complimented how fast was picking up her lessons.
Currently she was retrieving her hammer from storage so she could train with it, she couldn't just swing it randomly in combat and hope for the best, Sareena had agreed to train with her today and she'd gotten excited to be sparring with the demon woman.
Sareena had been opening up more to her and her mood had improved immensely, despite feeling completely helpless after the Netherrealm conversation, Mileena had tried to help in any way she could.
As she stepped into the storage room that contained the powerful hammer, a thought crossed her mind, she quickly looked around to see if anyone was nearby.
Mileena closed her eyes mentally reaching out for the hammer, she gasped in shock after a moment, opening her eyes, she stared in disbelief at the weapon before her.
"How…?" she muttered, the hammer as she could see in her mind was filled with her magic, "but shouldn't it have fath-… Shao Kahn's magic in it"
She swallowed her nervousness and reached out for the energy, rooting herself in place, the hammer twitched from it's place on the floor inching forward slightly, she gritted her teeth under her mask, extending her arm she gave a single command "Come".
As if some kind of trigger had activated the war hammer leapt from the ground and into it's new master's hands.
She looked at the weapon with joy in her eyes, 'I'm getting better, bit by bit' she thought before realizing what time it was, 'I better hurry before Sareena gets worried'
Sareena stood waiting in the training room, looking down at her sisters' weapons in her hands, she had refused to let them be taken from her.
'Sister…' she thought to herself ' not even a year ago I would say only two people could hold that title for me, and now they're gone'
Before her introspection could continue the door opened revealing Mileena carrying Shao Kahn's hammer "Sorry I'm late Sareena"
'Maybe I can have a new one…' Sareena smiled at the younger woman "It's okay Mileena, I haven't been here long" in truth she had been waiting ten minutes, but she knew Mileena would feel guilty if she said that "I can see we both have new weapons we have to get used to"
"Yeah… I'd like to focus on adapting my hammer into combat" said Mileena "I'll need to ask about some kind of sheath so I'm not carrying it in my hands all the time"
The demon watched as her friend devolved into series of muttering, "that is probably for the best" she said, startling Mileena from her thoughts "I'll have to do the same for…" she wordlessly raised the weapons in her hands.
"Do you… need a moment?" Mileena couldn't help but ask.
"No, I promised that we'd train together today" Sareena replied "I have to be responsible after all"
She couldn't help but be a little confused about the demon's words, before accepting that it was probably something she didn't need to know "what weapons do you have?" she asked.
"The energy blade was Jakaata's, I'll have to wait before training with it for now" Sareena answered solemnly "I also have both of Kia's edged boomerangs" she looked thoughtful for a moment "these have given me a lot of ranged options in combat"
"How?" Mileena questioned "I can understand the boomerangs, but the sword?"
"Jakaata's energy blade is able to fire bolts out of it's tip" she answered, she shook her head for a moment "for now we need to get used to wielding our weapons"
"Right" said Mileena, raising her hammer.
For the next two hours they practised using their new weapons and switch through what they had available, Mileena could feel that familiar burning in her arms that told that she was getting tired.
"Hey Mileena, we should take a break for now" said Sareena, releasing a deep breath.
"I can keep going" she replied, trying to hide how she felt.
"Mileena" Sareena repeated, sternly but not harsh "you need to rest, if you overwork you'll hurt yourself"
The hybrid tried, but she couldn't find the strength to object to Sareena's tone, just like Lewis, carefully she put the hammer down, her arms shook, showing just much she pushed herself in the training.
The demon made a 'follow' motion before walking to the nearest wall before sitting down against it, Mileena quickly joined her, the two sat in comfortable silence for a moment.
"Why do you push yourself so much?" Sareena asked.
"Because I need to save Kitana" Mileena answered immediately.
"But why?" she repeated "why do you have to save her?"
Mileena was silent for a second before answering "I told you, she's my sister" she debated leaving it at that, but simply sighed "Shang Tsung cloned me from her, but I don't want to replace her"
"So that's why you call her sister" Sareena mumbled "but, you know that family isn't just the people you share blood with"
"I know" came Mileena's reply, surprising the demon "Lewis has become family to me, I like to think she feels the same…"
"There could be more people that will see you as family out there" Sareena said softly "just remember that okay?"
"...okay"
Mileena carried the war hammer over her shoulder as she walked through the corridor, it had been a few hours since the time she spent with Sareena, the demon's words staying in her head.
'She wasn't reaching out to me, was she?' she wondered 'if she's missing her sisters, she might be looking for someone to fill the void'
Before she could contemplate further, a noise drew her attention, it was a Special Forces soldier in a black uniform, he was little on the short side with blond hair and green eyes "excuse me, are you Mileena?"
"Yes" she confirmed "and you are?…"
"Corporal William Holmes" he said with a salute "Major Briggs sent me inform you that she needs to see you"
"Okay, I'll go ahead now" she replied, with his message delivered, William turned and left.
Within minutes Mileena found Sonya talking with Raiden, "hello you wanted to see me?" she asked, a little nervous.
"Hello Mileena, Raiden came here to deliver Jade's staff" replied Sonya "because we had the original, they could fix it"
"Not exactly" Raiden interjected "it seems a piece was missing, we were unable to restore it completely, it will not compress to the same degree as before"
"Okay, but it still works right?" Mileena asked hesitantly.
"Yes" answered the god.
"Thank you Raiden" she replied, surprising the thunder god.
"Mileena, you deserve an apology from me" Raiden stated firmly "I was wrong about you, I see now I should have given you a chance and I will try to more amicable in the future"
Mileena was left speechless at the sincerity of Raiden's words, silently taking the staff from his hands "...thank you Raiden" she finally said "I'm gonna go give this to Jade"
The two watched as she left in search of the green-clad Edenian, after the two were alone Sonya turned to face the god directly "I take it that isn't the only reason you're here"
"Correct, I decided to find Sub-zero after our last conversation" he replied "he is currently recovering from a series of injuries inflicted by the cyber Lin Kuei"
"Keep an eye on him, and when he recovers, bring him here please" said Sonya "we should work together and take care of at least one problem"
Mileena found Jade in the shooting range practising with her throwing glaive, she knocked on the door to announce her presence, hide the compressed staff behind her back beforehand, Jade looked at the hybrid, questioning why she was there.
"Hello Jade, I wanted to thank you for training me recently, you didn't have to but you did" she started slowly "I hope I haven't been wasting your time" she paused for a moment, taking a calming breath "however I've terrible about what happened in the Netherrealm, so I had a message sent to Raiden"
Jade couldn't help but be confused at the younger woman's words, 'what does she have to feel bad about? I was the one who nearly disembowelled her' she thought, before she could voice it however, Mileena removed a very familiar staff from behind her back.
"Raiden said that "it will not compress to the same degree as before" but here" the hybrid said, passing the weapon to Jade "I'm sorry that I broke it before, it was probably very important to you" the Edenian slowly inspected the pole-arm in her hands "so I hope this makes up for my mistakes"
"Mileena, you have nothing to apologize for" said Jade firmly "you were fighting for your life in the Netherrealm, if our positions were reversed I would done the same"
"Thanks Jade" she replied happily, attempting to smile only to receive a sharp pain, making her wince slightly.
"Are you alright?" asked a concerned Jade.
"I just have some tooth ache, don't worry about it"
