The news of their arrival spread faster than they thought possible. None of them had considered how fast the gossip would spread because knights were supposed to be a common sight in the city.
The people around them had given them as much room as they could but there wasn't much room.
Asuna could hear and see the people around her whispering and pointing at both the men and the animals they had brought with them. Fortunately for everyone, none of them was brave enough or stupid enough to try and lure one away.
She watched as a cart full of large rocks nearly over a woman who was busy looking at the men working. She was forced to stop the driver who yelled at the woman to get out of the way before he turned and asked for her forgiveness.
Asuna just nodded and thanked him for not killing the woman, before telling the woman to pay attention to her surroundings because the next time she would let the woman get run over.
It was just one thing after another with these people, but at least it was something small this time.
She looks at the alleys where the orphans had gathered and frowns the players had given some food to a kid, or a group of kids who looked as if they hadn't eaten in weeks, they did the same for an old woman, a man, and so on.
It didn't take long for the city's bottom feeders to gather and demand that they give them food, thankfully the dogs and cats that they brought with them scared the hungry mob enough that they didn't try to attack them.
So they began to give food to the people hoping that they would leave and let them finish what they were doing, but the crowd didn't seem to have an end.
Then the sound of infants crying began, at first they ignored the noise thinking that the baby's parents would deal with it, but the crying only grew.
The men found babies that were wrapped in rags or naked on the filth-coved floor, some were carried by children whose ages varied from three to twelve.
Her heart broke when she found that some girls who were even younger than she was were already expecting and looked at her and the men with her with desperate eyes.
She knew that she couldn't take care of them, and she was well aware that the kids wouldn't be able to survive the journey to the castle because they were so young and weak, but she couldn't abandon them either.
So with a heart filled with regret, she turned the nearby alleys into orphanages. Unfortunately, that meant that fixing the building would take even longer because the men needed to clean up the alleys so that the kids didn't have to sit in filth.
Then there were the other issues, thieves and prostitutes took advantage of the crowd to either steal what little the people around them had or to help them forget their problem for a moment.
The rules said that prostitution wasn't illegal and should be left alone because no one was forcing anyone to spend the little money they had, on a man or woman.
Stealing was against the law, and they needed to cut the hand of anyone they caught or send them to the wall.
The problem with the law was, that half of the men and boys that they caught were either stealing food or money because they could not afford medicine or food, and their families were about to die. The law was black and white and left no openings for reason.
So against her better judgment, she had the men interrogate everyone they caught stealing and ordered them to tie everyone in the building who didn't have a good reason.
Everyone else was given food or were ordered to take one of the players to whoever sold what they needed.
She didn't do all of this out of pure kindness. There is a difference between seeing a place with your own eyes and following a map. The men would get a feel for the city and this would help them navigate it.
As for everyone they helped, those people now had a debt to pay. It wasn't one they could pay with money, if they had that then they wouldn't have felt the need to steal.
The people they helped now had a reason for keeping them around and while this may not be much to a lot of people. It makes a world of difference when everyone around you is willing to poison you just because you looked at them wrong.
Then there were the merchants who accused them of stealing, because of how much food they had given away and because no one had seen them bring any of it with them.
She nearly killed one of the city guards who threatened to take the orphans and throw them into a pit, but Kirito stopped her before she could cut the man in half.
He showed the guards the letter that the king had given them as proof that they were in control of this part of the city.
She frowned when Kirito said that the guards could contact Lady Whent to see if they were lying, as both the merchants and the guard's eyes changed.
The guards excused themselves, but the merchants tried to apologize before trying to get them to agree to sell or buy things from them. It was easy for her and everyone with her to know that news about the money that Lady Whent gave the crown had spread.
It was one thing after another and the day wasn't even done. She still had to think about what she was going to do with the kids.
"Asuna you need to take a look at this." Kirito says to her. She can feel her headache grow even before she turns and follows him to wherever he wants her to go.
"Damm it.' she says to herself when she sees all of the sci, injured, and old people.
Kirito leans to her and she feels his warm breath on her ear before he says "This isn't normal. I can understand the parents abandoning their kids, or the people who wanted food, but this is too much. Someone is sending people to us."
Asuna can't help but agree, she is about to tell everyone to go away but her help screen shows her that the extra hands she needs have just entered the city.
"If you don't have someone who is dying, are dying or if you are not in so much pain that you would rather die, leave everyone else make a line!" she yells to the crowd.
"Let's see who breaks first." she thinks to herself as she wonders who would be doing this to them. It had to either be the king or someone close to him, but she had no idea why they would be doing something like this so soon.
