AN: This is going to be another one of those, multiple episodes, in one, kinda chapters. It's going to contain, all three episodes, of the "Orion Pax" story arc. I'm gonna try to make this chapter, not so long, as the last one. Maybe there are some things, I can skim over. Some conversations, that I don't have to recreate, word for word. I'd like to get these next two chapters done, in time for Christmas.
LET'S JUMP INTO IT!
The Autobots were trying to wrap their heads, around everything that's happened, as of recent. Optimus knew Megatron. He acted like, the two of them, were comrades, of some kind. This caused him to go with the leader of their sworn enemies. Instead, of his trusted Autobots. Ratchet rightly surmised, that Optimus must have forgotten that he was ever a Prime. A result, of him using the full power of The Matrix. All in the name of defeating Unicron; and saving the Earth. The Humans, weren't sure what Ratchet was getting at. So, he elaborated.
"With the power of The Matrix, no longer within him. It would stand to reason; that Optimus, has reverted to his pre Prime state. The historical archivist, Orion Pax."
"You mean, in his mind?" June questioned.
"Are you telling me, Prime thinks he's some kind of, librarian; and a Decepticon?" Fowler said. Ratchet thought that was an absurd statement. He knew that there was no way, that Optimus would ever, knowingly side with the Decepticons. He would never choose to be on the side of evil. But the fact remained; that Optimus did know Megatron, before the war for Cybertron. It was possible, that he reverted back to those memories. If that was the case; Megatron would have no problem, with manipulating his former friend. Especially, if it served his benefit.
On board the Nemesis, Megatron was addressing his crew. He explained that, Orion Pax was currently in isolation; to better help, ease his transition. But, he was to be shown, every courtesy. Megatron also threatened, that the first one to address Orion, as Optimus Prime; would have their voice box, torn out. Airachnid did pose a question, to their leader. She asked if it was wise to allow an Autobot, at any point in their live; to have full run, of the ship.
Megatron countered by saying, that nothing happens, aboard his ship; that he isn't made aware of. Such was the case, when Airachnid attempted her coup. That information was made privy to him, by the Decepticon's spy master, Soundwave. Megatron assured her, that Orion did not possessed the same fighting spirit; that Optimus was so renowned for. She failed to see the reason for having him on board; if he wasn't even a fighter. Megatron, however, knew that Orion; did indeed, have a role to play.
Autobot base
"Being a Decepticon, is a choice, Agent Fowler. One that I have a hard time believing; that Optimus would make, at any point, in his life." Ratchet explained. This made Bulkhead, and Arcee, come to the same realization. If Optimus was with the Decepticons, now. It would only be because, Megatron was playing mind games.
"Orion Pax, may not currently be an Autobot, up here." Ratchet said, as he pointed to his own helm. "But I must believe; that he will never stop being one, in here." Ratchet finished that statement, by letting his servo, come to rest against his Spark chamber. "We must locate him; to know, for certain." Fowler then asked, if it was possible to track Optimus.
"Optimus's signal has not reappeared; since he has embarked for Earth's core. But we must get to work, finding him. If we have any hope, of initiating his contingency plan." Ratchet informed, those that were gathered.
"Contingency plan?" Arcee wondered, out loud.
"What contingency?" Bulkhead was just as lost, as everybody else.
But, Jack had a feeling; that he knew what Ratchet was referring to. "The key card." He said, as he held up the key, to Vector Sigma. "So, what's it do?"
"It grants access to Vector Sigma. The repository, of the wisdom, of the Primes." Said Ratchet.
"Is that some sort of, supercomputer?" Raf inquired.
The thought of this, filled Jack, with hope. A way to easily get Optimus back. "So, we can just, download Optimus's memories, back into him? Great! Which one's the big V? Over here? Somewhere in back?" Jack mistook Vector Sigma, for something that they had, on hand, at base. Regrettably, it was a mistake, that Ratchet; now had to clarify.
"Vector Sigma is more than a supercomputer, Jack. It is an ancient source, of mystical power, on Cybertron."
This revelation, wasn't going to fly, with June. "Jackson Darby, you will not be traveling to another planet!" Jack's mother, was putting her foot down.
"I'm in!" Miko volunteered.
"You're not going, either, Miko. Not when one of you can." June said, to all Autobots, present. Excluding Ratchet, the other Autobots, looked between each other. June put them on the spot. They hadn't been to Cybertron, in years. Let alone, even know where Vector Sigma, was located.
"June's right. Why send a boy, to do a bot's job?" Fowler questioned.
"Because only a Prime, can access Vector Sigma. Or, one chosen by a Prime. Optimus gave the key card to Jack. It is now imprinted, with his unique bio signature." Ratchet lectured.
"So, you mean, Jack's some kind of, honorary Prime?" Asked Miko.
"Let's just say, Jack; is the only one who can return Optimus, to the Autobot we knew." Ratchet couldn't stress enough, the importance, of the roll; that Jack had now been given.
"But why would Optimus, willfully endanger a Human? A child." June, verbally pondered.
"I'm not a child, mom." Jack declared.
"Maybe Optimus believe there's more to Jack, than meets the eye." Arcee added. Even she, as Jack's partner, has seen this. He's put himself on the line, for everyone in this room. He always found a way to help, or save, the people that mattered to him. Even before his powers showed up. Never putting his own well-being, above anyone else's.
"All of which, is moot. The key card, is useless to us; without a means of reaching Cybertron. Which we, at present, do not possess." Ratchet affirmed. Miko asked why they couldn't just use the Ground Bridge. Raf reminded her, that the Ground Bridge; barely had enough range, to get the bots, into Earth's orbit. She shot back, by saying that Ratchet built the thing. By that logic, couldn't he find a way to turbo charge it? This caused Ratchet, to have a puzzled look, on his face. He was smart. But, was he able to do something like that? Could he really turn the Ground Bridge, into a Space Bridge?
A little while later, almost everyone else, had gone home. Except for Jack. He found a moment to speak to Ratchet, alone. "Hey, Ratchet! Can I talk to you, for a sec?"
"Of course. After everything that's happened; I would guess, that you have a lot, on your mind." Ratchet saw Jack's uneasy state. "What's bothering you?" He asked the young Mutant.
"You once said, that I was like Optimus. But I don't see it. Optimus is a great leader. A hero. He fought for something, that was greater than himself. But, that isn't me. Me, I'm just a guy from Jasper. I'm not even Human. I'm a Mutant. When the world finds out about me; they'll most likely, reject me. My only real power, is a slightly elevated ability, to take a beating. There's no way, that I ever could have been like Optimus. I'm not a leader. I'm no hero. So, why did he choose me? It doesn't make any sense, for Optimus; to put his life, in my hands."
"You may not be a Cybertronian, Jack. Or a Human, for that matter. But you have no less, proven yourself worthy, of being a Prime." Ratchet said. This caused Jack, to stare at the Autobot, with an amazed look. Ratchet continued. "I witnessed you, risk your life. All to save Raphael's. You couldn't have known, that you would pull through. But, you did so, anyway. Because you wanted to save your friend. And you believed, that it was right. That's what makes you noble. It's no different than what Optimus would have done. It's no different than what he has done.
It's because of this reason; that I believe you are very much so, the same as Optimus. Even before he was a Prime; Orion always possessed, within his Spark, a strong light, of goodness. I now see, that same light, within you." Ratchet declared, as he pointed to Jack. No one had ever said that, to Jack. Not even, remotely close. He wasn't sure, how to take it.
"He's right, Jack." Arcee's voice, came from across the room. She stepped closer to her partner. "From the moment I met you; there were times, when you were scared. Moments when you wanted to run away from all this; and go back to having a normal life. But then, there were times; when I saw you being courageous. You did things, that would have been impossible, for any normal person. Then, you risked everything, to help Raf. Not everyone would have sacrificed themselves. Even if it was for someone that they loved. But, that's all you've ever done.
You saved Raf's life. And you've been saving mine; since the day, I first met you. Mutant, or not. Human, or not. Jack Darby, is a hero."
"Thanks, Arcee!" Jack said, with gratitude.
"Anytime, partner!" She responded, with a smile.
On the Nemesis, Megatron's lies, continued. Orion had been accepted, into their ranks. Even been given a Decepticon insignia. Megatron showed him the lifeless planet, of Cybertron. He then told him, that it was Ratchet; who was the leader of the evil Autobots. He would have Orion believe, that Ratchet orchestrated the war; that led to Cybertron's destruction. Orion was finding it hard to believe, that Ratchet, his friend; could be capable of something like that. Megatron then said, the Autobot's reign of terror; was now continuing, on Earth.
He went on, to state, that the Decepticons; have pledged to defend the Earth. From sharing the same fate, as Cybertron. Even with all these answers, laid before him; Orion couldn't help but wonder something. "One question, Megatron. Why are we called "Decepticons?" " That name sounded rather, villainous, to Orion. Especially if they were supposed to be, a form of protectors.
"Another craven Autobot scare tactic. The name was meant to demonize us. Instead, we wear it, as a badge of honor. For if speaking the truth, is deception. Then we are gladly guilty." Megatron answered. This response, seemed to satisfy Orion's curiosity. Orion then vowed to stop Ratchet's crimes. That made Megatron, crack a wicked grin. He later convened, with Soundwave, in private. Knowing that Orion would require full access, to their mainframe; he asked if Soundwave sanitize the data core. Soundwave responded, with a nod.
During the war, the Decepticons stormed the Icon hall of records. This led them to the acquisition, of highly classified files. Written in Autobot code. A code, that they have not been able to decipher. Orion Pax was an archivist, at the hall of records. So, Megatron put him to work, in cracking the code. That was his reason for recruiting Orion.
He felt as though, Orion would do better; if he didn't feel threatens, or confined. However, Megatron was no fool. He set up Orion's workstation; in direct proximity, to the Energon storage vault. The one area, of the ship, that was under constant surveillance. He also made it a point; to monitor all of Orion's research.
At the K.O. Burger, Jack was hard at work. After serving his last customer; he saw Sierra, standing in the parking lot. She was directly across from the drive-thru window. "Hey, Jack!" She said, with a wave.
"Sierra!" Jack responded.
"How come, I never see you around?"
"What are you talking about? We have chemistry, together." He saw Sierra shrug her shoulders, to that. He chose to reiterate. "Uh...class. Chemistry class."
"I mean, outside of school." Sierra said, while rubbing the side of her head. She was clearly, trying to get Jack's attention. "I never see you at any parties. Or, The Mall."
"Well...mostly, I'm here; wearing the hat." Jack gestured to the white hat; that his job made him wear. "I also have a lot of...after school activities. And...there's some other...stuff." He was alerted to another inbound customer. He still wanted to talk to Sierra. So, he asked her to wait; until he was finished with the new customer. Sierra cracked a, slight smile. The smile disappeared; as soon as she heard the next words, being uttered.
"5:00 PM, Jack. Your shift is over. Let's go!" Came the voice, of a female, over the intercom.
"Oh! That...kind of...stuff." Sierra responded, with embarrassment. She then began, walking away.
Jack wanted to stop her. So, he called out to her. "Sierra, wait! She's my mother." He hoped that she would believe his lie. Although, then Arcee showed up; with her holographic rider, Sadie. Sadie was clad, in a motorcycle helmet; and a full leather outfit. At this point, Jack's lie; pretty much, fell apart, on itself.
"Your mom looks good, in leather! On your bike!" Sierra said, sarcastically, before walking away.
"Didn't mean to decimate your social life!" Arcee apologized to Jack.
"Not the first time. Besides, I don't know if Sierra's "The One" . She's the most popular girl, in school. Maybe even, in the whole town. Every guy wants to date her. But, who knows how she'll react; once she finds out, about Mutants. She might be scared. She might be full of hate. I think I need to find someone...more, my speed. Anyway, shifting gears, back to more important matters. Any sign of Optimus?"
"Not today." She regretted that they couldn't find him.
"Not yet!" Jack said, with a look of determination.
Later, that day, Fowler informed the bots; that the cons were up to no good, again. They were currently stealing from the same military lab; that they hit, not so long ago. The bots had to react, to this. With any luck, Optimus would be at the site of the theft. When the Autobots arrived; they encountered Knockout, and Breakdown. Knockout was a medic. Essentially, he was the Decepticon's version, of Ratchet. Breakdown, was his partner; and the arch nemesis, of Bulkhead. The Autobots ordered them, to drop the device.
The two cons, then received, reinforcements. A fight ensued. The cons were leaving, through their Ground Bridge. In a fit of desperation, Arcee changed into vehicle form; and chased them through the Bridge. She fought her way, through the Decepticon warship; searching for Optimus. She would have found him; if it wasn't for Soundwave, using a Ground Bridge, to send her off the ship. Arcee landed, somewhere in the artic. Arcee screamed to the heavens, in frustration. She was soon recovered, by the Autobots; and brought back to base.
Ratchet was running his medical scanner, over her. "You weren't able to determine the Decepticon's location? Or, if Optimus was even aboard ship?" He asked, before he stopped scanning her.
"I...couldn't confirm." Arcee hated that she couldn't report more, on the matter. This made Bulkhead, so mad, that he slammed his fist into a console; breaking one of Ratchet's tools.
"BULKHEAD!" Ratchet scolded.
"WHAT? YOU NEEDED THAT? ONLY THING I NEED, IS OUR HEAD HONCHO, BACK!" Bulkhead yelled, before slamming his fists together.
"It's not your fault." Jack tried to reassure Arcee. He knew that she did everything she could, to get to Optimus.
"If any of us needed rescuing; Optimus would have found a way. I didn't. Simple as that." It hurt Jack, to see Arcee; being so hard, on herself. She always seemed, so strong, to him. So brave. She was the most capable person, he knew. That's why he knew; that if she couldn't bring Optimus back, then no one could have. Not at that moment. Fowler then called the bots. He said that the higher ups, were breathing down his neck; for an explanation, on what happened, during the theft. He warned them, that if they didn't get their act together; The Pentagon would force him to shut down their base. The call then ended.
Raf asked where they would go; if that ever happened. Ratchet made a sarcastic retort; about The Government, shipping them off to some island. Or, maybe they would shoot them off into space. Arcee didn't blame Fowler, for being angry. They handled that last mission, poorly. She said that, if it were Optimus; he would have evacuated all Humans, before engaging the cons. Bulkhead started that neither of them knew what Optimus would have done; because he wasn't there. This sparked a verbal argument, between Arcee, and Bulkhead.
Jack had an idea. He took this chance, to quell the fighting, between the bots. "Hey! Aren't we overlooking, one positive? Nobody's talking about what the cons, just got their claws on."
"Yes. We managed to allow them to finally acquire a power source, for their Space Bridge!" Said Ratchet, through an exasperated tone.
"And how, exactly, would that be a positive?" Questioned Arcee.
"We let them finish building their Space Bridge." Jack replied. This shocked everyone, present. They couldn't believe, that he was even suggesting that.
"Why? So they can bring more zombies, back from Cybertron?" Bulkhead murmured.
"No. So we can commandeer it. And use it, to send me to Cybertron." Jack strategized.
"Whoa! That's a pretty good idea." Miko commented.
"Oh, well, if Miko thinks it's a good idea-" Arcee retorted.
Jack kept going, with trying to convince them. "Nobody's saying, it will be easy. But, you've seized a Space Bridge, before."
"We blew one up. That's a whole lot different, than three of us, seizing, and holding one." Bulkhead corrected.
None of this changed the fact, that they still had to find it; before they could even attempt, to enact this crazy plan. Then, Miko interjected. "Uh, hello! If it's a Space Bridge. Isn't it-" She then pointed up. Further emphasizing her meaning. Apparently, she took the name, literally.
"The term "Space" , refers to its transport range. Not it's physical location. And we've been monitoring Earth's orbit, since the last one. We'd know, if it were there." Ratchet informed. This led to one belief. That the Space Bridge, could very well be, on Earth. If that was the case; it wouldn't be easy, to find. Strengthening their need, to start looking, now. "But the fact remains; we do not know what the Decepticons have in store, for Optimus. Or, if he's truly safe, from harm." Ratchet lamented.
"It doesn't help, that there's only going to be three of us, guarding the Space Bridge. Ratchet will have to come with us; to operate the thing. Plus, whoever we send, with Jack, to Cybertron. If the Decepticons discover us; will be outnumbered. No matter how you size it up; we're going to have to do this, on our own." Bulkhead claimed.
"Well...that's not entirely true. It's not like, there isn't anyone; that we can call upon. I think I might know some people." Jack murmured. Arcee could see the look, on Jack's face. She could tell, what he was thinking. She decided to put a stop to it. Right here, and now.
"No! Not those people, from The Institute! This is none of their business. You shouldn't be getting them involved!"
"Arcee, we need the help! I've seen what the X-Men can do. They've been in training."
"Not for this. Not when it comes to fighting Decepticons. Most of that team, are kids. Plus, have you forgotten, that our existence, must remain, a secret?"
"I told you, before, Arcee. The X-Men have secrets; that they also need to protect. Just like you, and the rest of Team Prime. I think we can trust them. Besides that. As a group, they're one of the most powerful, on the planet. They could be a real asset, to us, for this mission. We're going to need, every advantage, we can get." It looked like, she still needed some convincing. "How badly, do you want Optimus back? Arcee, you have to trust me! Please!" The metal, on Arcee's faceplate, started to shift; as she considered their options. It upset her, that Jack had a point.
"Fine!" She said, in defeat.
Jack smiled. "Ratchet, fire up the Ground Bridge!" He said.
When Jack arrived, at The Institute; he asked Professor Xavier, if he could gather the X-Men, in the Danger Room. Charles inquired why he would want that. But Jack just told him, that it was urgent. A short time, after that; the X-Men were assembled, in the Danger Room. Along with Professor X, and Logan. Jack had brought his motorcycle, into the room, with him. He figured that the Danger Room, was the only part of the mansion; where Arcee could transform, in private. "Alright, Jack! We're here. Now, what is this all about?" The Professor asked.
"Yeah. And like, why'd you bring your motorcycle, in here?" Kitty added.
"I'll get to that. But first, let me ask you this. I take it, you guys are aware of the freak weather patterns; that have been happening, as of recent?"
Scott was the next person, to speak. "Yeah. They were all over the news. We even had a few of those storms, here, in Bayville. What's that got to do with anything?"
"Well...that's why I'm here. We need your help."
"We?"Jean questioned.
"I know what caused the storms. It wasn't what you think." They all waited, with baited breath, for Jack's explanation. "It was aliens." Jack said, simply. There was a slight chuckle, amongst the group. Before Evan started, outright, laughing. "I'm serious!" Jack said. Even to Mutants, that was kinda, a hard sell. "I knew It was gonna come to this. Alright, guys! There's someone, I want to introduce you to. When you meet her; it's gonna freak you out, a little. But there's nothing to be afraid of. She's safe. And she won't hurt you. Arcee, it's now, or never!"
Shifting metal, could be heard; as Jack's motorcycle, transformed into a giant robot. The X-Men took a step back, in surprise. "It's ok! She's a friend." Jack tried to calm the situation.
"What is that?" Rogue asked.
"This is Arcee." Said Jack.
Arcee knelt down. "It's nice to, officially, meet you!" She said.
Jack knew that this was going to take a while. So, he just started explaining. "Arcee is a sentient, robotic organism, from the planet Cybertron. She's part of a team, stationed here, on Earth. And...I spend most of my time, after school; hanging with her crew." He then went on, to explain the history of Cybertron, as he understood it. He told them about the war; and about the two factions. How Cybertron can no longer support life. Then, the cherry on top. He told them about Unicron; and how their planet, is really, a Cybertronian life form.
There were questions, to be had, for sure. This was a big revelation, for the X-Men. To learn that the Earth, was a sentient being. A being, that tried to kill everyone. Jack told them, what was most important. But, he didn't tell them every detail, about his time with the Autobots. Not yet. Logan spoke up. "So, you've been hanging around, with aliens, all this time? Does your mother know what you've been doing?"
"Yeah!" Jack said, sheepishly.
"Why didn't you tell us, any of this, before?" Rogue asked. She thought that Jack was her friend. But he still kept secrets from her. Didn't he know that he could trust them? That he could trust her?
"I wanted to. I even thought about it, a couple of times. You guys were good at keeping secrets. I knew we could trust you. But, ultimately, I think the main reason I didn't tell you; was because it wasn't my secret, to tell. The Autobots are robots, in disguise. They take maintaining their cover, very seriously. There's more, I have to explain. But, for right now; will you, please, come with me? My friends can shed light on things, better than I can."
When the X-Men agreed to go with them; Arcee called for a Bridge. The green vortex appeared, out of nowhere. They were hesitant to go through. But Jack assured them, that it would be alright. Everyone went through the Ground Bridge. For the X-Men, it was a new experience. The Ground Bridge, was definitely going to take some getting used to. The Bridge, then closed. When they looked around, they saw the rest of the Autobots; and the huge area, that was their base. "Where are we?" Asked Kurt.
"The Autobot's base. It's an abandoned missile silo, just a little ways outside of Jasper Nevada."
Realization, dawned on The Professor. "So, this is how you've been coming, and going; from Jasper, to Bayville."
"Yeah!" Jack said, while rubbing the back of his head. The Professor couldn't deny; Cybertronian tech, was truly remarkable.
"Who else knows about this?" Inquired Rogue.
"Raf. Miko. My mom. There's this guy, named Agent Fowler. Some people, in The Government. And...Jamie." Jack was a little nervous; about admitting, that last part.
"You told Jamie?" Said Kitty.
"I had to. He saw me and Arcee, leaving The Institute; through a Ground Bridge."
The X-Men were told how Optimus saved their world. As well as, what it cost him. The Autobots told them, of their plan. They thought the plan was clever; but, incredibly risky. Logan wasn't real crazy about sending his only son, to an alien planet. The Autobots begged the X-Men, for their help. They couldn't force them, to volunteer. It had to be, their choice. Jack noticed, that Rogue had her arms crossed; while looking away from him. She was still harboring hurt feelings, towards Jack. He wanted to say something, to convince her, of his intentions.
"Look, Rogue! I know I kept secrets. And I'm sorry! I never meant to hurt anyone. Especially, you. I will do whatever it takes, to make things right. But you have to understand. Optimus may not be from Earth. But, he is a good man. He risked his life, to save our world. To save all of us. Now, I need your help, to save him. If you don't help us, he'll die!"
After hearing the severity, of the situation; most of the X-Men, volunteered to give aid. Rogue had to come to terms, with everything. But then, she relented. It was decided, that when the Autobots were ready; The X-Men would be there, to fight alongside them. Charles shook Jack's hand; solidifying the agreement. The X-Men used The Ground Bridge, to return home.
Ratchet had begun work, trying to turbo charge the Ground Bridge. As Miko put it. It was just an experiment; and he wasn't sure, if it was going to work. Raf was helping him. They sent an RC car, into the Ground Bridge. Hoping that it's range, would be extended. Sadly, the car was destroyed. Ratchet became dejected. Raf told him, that it was only, the first test. But Ratchet knew better. Mastering Space Bridge engineering, takes eons. Time, that they did not have.
A while, after the failed experiment; Ratchet received a high frequency signal, with an embedded message. It was from Starscream. The message said that he had information, about Optimus. In exchange, for this information; he wanted Ratchet to meet him, with a medical kit. He requested, that the Autobot medic, come alone. Ratchet arrived, at the designated location; with Bulkhead, as backup. Starscream leaning against a rock; with Energon, leaking out of the gash, on his leg. "I told you, to come alone!" Starscream complained.
"And since when, do we listen to you?" Bulkhead retorted, as he pulled out his mace.
"Where is Optimus?" Ratchet questioned.
"Patch me up; and perhaps, I'll tell you." Starscream tried to bargain. But the two Autobots; weren't having any of it. "Have sympathy! I'm leaking, here!" Starscream gestured to his injured leg.
"Then I suggest, that you speak quickly." Ratchet was in no mood, for games. "Has Optimus been harmed, in any way?" Starscream assured him, but he was fine. Before begging, yet again, to have his leg, repaired. They asked were Optimus was. Starscream said that he was on Megatron ship. But he was unable to give, an accurate location. "You wouldn't go to the trouble of calling me, here; unless you had information to trade. Real information." Ratchet clarified.
Starscream revealed, that Optimus was going by the name, Orion Pax. Megatron had him believe, that he was a Decepticon. In truth, Megatron told Orion, that Starscream was dead. This called into question; everything that Megatron told the archivist. The Autobots stated, that they already knew, about Orion Pax. Starscream now, had nothing to bargain with. They turned, to leave. Starscream begged for help. The two of them, turned around. "Unless you know where Megatron's hiding his Space Bridge; you can stay here, and rust!" Bulkhead declared.
"Space Bridge? Do you mean to tell me, that they actually finished building it; without my supervision?" Starscream pondered, out loud. The look, on the Autobot's faces, confirmed one thing. The tables had turned. Starscream now had something, that they wanted. The location, of the Space Bridge. He began to chuckle. "It hurts, most, right here, Doctor!" Starscream gestured to his leg; knowing that he would get, what he wanted.
The Autobots, Humans, and X-Men; were all together, at the base. The X-Men were wearing their uniforms. Ratchet explained, that they had Intel, on where the Space Bridge was located. It was in an Energon mine. Next to a raw fuel supply. Ratchet was hesitant, to share where the information came from. "So, do we have a consensus?" He asked the Humans.
"Do we know if people can even breathe your atmosphere?" Questioned June. Fowler said that he could hook Jack up; with, state of the art, equipment. Fowler had some connections, with NASA. Logan didn't know Fowler. But he kinda hated, how chummy, he was getting; with his ex, and his kid. "It's too dangerous!" June worried.
"Mom! I know that this is hard. But Optimus risked his life, to save our planet. And he's not even Human. We owe it to him!"
Arcee approached the Human area. "Jack may be, the only one who can do this, June. But, I don't want you to think for, one moment; that I'll allow him to travel, unchaperoned."
"Not everyone, is destined for an ordinary life. Optimus Prime, was once, Orion Pax, after all." Ratchet reminded those, that heard the story.
June looked at her son; and felt her heart swell, with pride. She knew that he was doing what's right. He was being, so brave. "When you were little; you always wanted to be an astronaut." She said. Yes, she was scared, for her son. But, at the same time; she was so very proud of him. After that tender moment; a battle plan, was formed. The Autobots, and X-Men, would infiltrate the mine; dispatching any Decepticon resistance, along the way. It was crucial, that they be stealthy. They would be outnumbered; and they couldn't let any Decepticons, transmit a distress signal, to their warship.
They were going to scramble the signal, upon arrival. They would then have to hold the position, long enough for Jack, and Arcee; to get to Cybertron, and back. The Humans would remain at base; to help with communications. Miko was disappointed, that she couldn't go with them. It was time for Jack, to suit up. The team fought their way, through the few guards; in route to the Space Bridge chamber. Thankfully, the signal jammer; made it impossible, for the cons to call for backup. They then arrived, at the central chamber. It was crawling, with Decepticons.
"Thank you, Starscream!" Arcee showed off, her master detective skills. Confirming that she knew, where Bulkhead, and Ratchet; got the tip from. "Who else would it be?" She asked, rhetorically, to Bulkhead; who was giving her, a surprised look. The Autobots came in; blasting, and smashing, the Decepticons. Cyclops took one out, with his optic blast. Spyke lodged one of his spikes, in a con's throat. That same con, then fell to the ground. Wolverine sliced one of the cons, to pieces.
They had successfully, taken the Space Bridge. Now, they had to disable the scrambler; to allow for communications, back to base. They sent for Jack. He came through the Ground Bridge; and exited, into the Space Bridge chamber. He was wearing a space suit. The only downside; he couldn't pull his claws out, while wearing the suit. If he did, the suit would be compromised; and he would lose oxygen. So, he recalled the metal, that covered his bones. It didn't make any sense, for him to have that, in use. Especially, if he couldn't fight; while wearing the suit.
Ratchet said that he would keep the Space Bridge open; for the remainder of the mission. It would help with communications; as well as make it easier, to find their way back. Jack wondered why they wouldn't just Bridge them, directly to Vector Sigma. But Ratchet couldn't do that; because it's location was shrouded in myths, and rumors. Ratchet was confident, that Optimus would find a way to guide Jack. Arcee told her partner, that going through a Space Bridge; was just like a Ground Bridge. Only, a little more, intense. Made evident, when Ratchet activated it.
Before they Departed; Logan chose to speak his mind. "Look! All of this, is new, to me. Most of it, goes over my head. I can't pretend to understand. But this much, I do know. Jack, is my son. And he really cares about this Optimus, guy. If he didn't, then he wouldn't be doing this. There's nothing I can do, to stop him. But, there's something you can do, for me. Give me your word; that while he's over there, you'll keep him safe! And that you'll return him; in the exact same condition, that he left in." Logan said to Arcee.
"I'll keep him safe. You have my word." Arcee told Logan.
Jack and Arcee, walked through the Bridge; and found themselves, on Cybertron. Jack was excited, to actually be on another planet. But Arcee, didn't share his excitement. The planet was ravaged. Its buildings, destroyed. It was a ruined world. Arcee didn't want Jack to see Cybertron. Not when it was in the state. The Autobots did everything they could, to save Cybertron. But in the end, there wasn't much left, to save. All Jack could, at this moment; was apologized to Arcee. He wasn't the one, who lost his world. But he felt sorry, to see his friend, suffering.
Jack pulled out the key; and it started glowing. The glow got brighter; when he pointed it, in a certain direction. They had their heading. Arcee transformed, and they drove off; in the same direction, that the key showed them. Unexpectedly, the Decepticons were contacting the Space Bridge. "Space Bridge control, do you read me? Space Bridge control, this is Breakdown. Your status report, is overdue." Breakdown spoke through a terminal, on the Nemesis.
The Autobots knew, that someone had to say something. Otherwise, the Decepticons would know something was wrong. Bulkhead and Ratchet, couldn't say anything. Breakdown would recognize their voices. Asking Bumblebee to do it, wasn't an option. "Come in, Space Bridge control! Don't make me come down there; and dent some engine blocks!" Breakdown warned. They had to say, something. Just then, Ratchet took a look, at the gathered X-Men. He had an idea.
"You have one nano cycle, to respond, or-" Breakdown threatened, again; but was interrupted, by a new voice.
"This is Space Bridge control. Situation, normal." Scott said, over the comm.
"Normal? You sure about that?"
"We were just...calibrating the subsystems; and we had a surge. But, it's fine now. We appreciate your call! Thanks a lot!" The others thought, that Scott; might have been a bit too, cordial.
"Uh...no problem. I know it's thankless, down there. Keep up, the good work, huh?" Breakdown spoke.
"Will do. Control out." Scott said, before cutting the link. Back on Cybertron, Jack and Arcee's journey; came to an end, at Chaon. The Decepticon capital. Arcee transformed, and pulled out her blaster. Even though Cybertron was abandoned; it's still concealed, a few threats. When they entered the center of Chaon; a huge gateway, shot out of the ground. The gate opened; revealing the path to Vector Sigma. Jack didn't understand what Vector Sigma was doing, in Chaon.
Arcee told him that Chaon didn't always belong to the Decepticons. Megatron took it, as a capital. Without ever knowing, what was beneath it. Then, a Decepticon showed up. It was bigger than any con; that Jack had seen, so far. It looked like a giant bug. The con recognized Arcee, as an Autobot; and started attacking them. Arcee was keeping the con busy; while Jack radioed the bots. He described the con, that was attacking them. Ratchet identified it, as an Insecticon.
He explained that, even though Cybertron was abandoned; a few Decepticons, remained behind. In case the enemy, ever returned. Arcee ordered Jack, to get to Vector Sigma; while she held of the Insecticon. June was was worried about what could happen, to her son; if Arcee left him alone. "Without Arcee? She's his guide!" She said.
"No, Nurse Darby. Arcee is Jack's backup. The key card, is his guide." Ratchet informed her.
Arcee, once again, told Jack to go. "Listen to her, Jack! You've made it, this far. Optimus is counting on you!" June said.
"Roger that, mom." Jack responded, before walking through the gateway. The gate closed, behind him.
On board the Nemesis; Megatron asked Orion, if he had any progress, in decoding the Iacon database. So far, he had Orion, decode, several entries. Entries that spoke of artifacts, shipped from Cybertron; and hidden, on Earth. Orion was hesitant to tell Megatron, anything. He had learned of a few, disturbing truths, about the Decepticons. This made him call into question, everything that he had been told. So, he lied; and told Megatron, that he didn't learn anything.
But Megatron, could see right through it. He walked up to the terminal, and pushed a button. Now, he could see everything that Orion was researching. It was all, information about Optimus Prime. Megatron revealed, that the Decepticons; were tracking his activities, within their system. There was no point in hiding it, anymore. So Orion, asked his questions. "Why does history portray me, siding with the Autobot aggressors? And why did Starscream call me a Prime? I must know! Who am I?"
"You are my clerk. Now, get back to work; and decode that database!" Megatron instructed.
Orion knew that Megatron, was never going to give him a straight answer. He couldn't make him, tell him the truth. But, there was still, one good thing, that he could do. "No. I would rather erase my findings; than make them available, for your questionable use." Orion said, before he deleted his research. He walked away, thinking that was the end of it. But he turned around, when he heard Megatron, chuckling. Megatron push the button; and all the previously erased data, reappeared. Orion was shocked.
"Did you really think that we wouldn't be tracking, and documenting; every iota, of your invaluable research?" Megatron mocked. Soundwave walked in, and alerted Megatron; that one of their sentries had been activated, on Cybertron. Orion was now wondering; if Megatron also lied about their world, being dead. Given that there were still Decepticons, on Cybertron. Megatron warned Orion; that he would finish decoding the database, before he returned. If not, he would watch, as he tore out his Spark. Megatron left two guards, with Orion; before leaving, to deal with the disturbance.
Jack was making his way, down a tunnel. He was carrying, a piece of pipe, with him. If he couldn't use his claws; he figured that he should, at least, have some kind of weapon. He entered the central chamber. He found a place, where the key would fit. He inserted the key; and it grew, back to its original size. This started up, a giant machine. Lights were glowing; as the wisdom, of the Primes, was being downloaded, into the key. "Commencing download. I think." Jack spoke into his comm link.
Sometime went by; and the download, still wasn't complete. "This is, taking a while." Jack announced.
"Of course it is. We are talking, about the collective wisdom, of the Primes." Ratchet reminded him. Jack heard some noises, coming from above. He looked, and discovered that the noise; was coming from a swarm of Scraplets. They were tiny vermin, that lived on Cybertron. They loved eating metal. Especially, living metal. The Scraplets flew past Jack; and started biting at the key. On the other side of the comm; Ratchet heard the commotion. "What is it, Jack?" He asked.
"Scraplets." Jack answered.
"What's a Scraplet?" June inquired. Miko and Raf, were standing right next to Nurse Darby. They looked worried. Rightfully so. The kids were the only people, from Earth; that new what a Scraplet was. They understood, how bad, this was.
"Why did it have to be Scraplets?" Bulkhead complained.
"If they chew through Vector Sigma; before The Matrix, fully reloads-" Ratchet feared the worst.
"So, Vector Sigma, is more than legend." A new voice said; cutting Ratchet's worries, short. The voice belonged to Megatron. He came in, through a Ground Bridge; before it closed. "You Autobots, have gone to impressive lengths, to recover your leader. Be assured! I shall never underestimate you, again." Megatron then noticed the X-Men. "And the same goes, for your new pets." The leader of the Decepticons; took a few steps forward. "Now, I assume the one called, Arcee; will be stepping through that portal. With a reloaded Matrix of Leadership, in hand."
"Yeah. But you have to get through us, first, Bub!" Wolverine challenged, as he extended his claws. The Autobots, and X-Men; took up, a battle stance.
"We hold the Space Bridge; at all costs!" Ratchet commanded. The Autobots equipped their weapons.
Rogue took off, one of her gloves. "Sorry Scott! I need to borrow some juice." She then touched Cyclops, on his face. She took some of his power. Not enough, to lay him out. But, just enough, so that she could fight. The Autobots shot at Megatron. But, he charged right through it. He slammed his fist into Bulkhead; sending him flying. He threw Ratchet away. Bumblebee got knocked down. Cyclops and Rogue; managed to nail Megatron, with their shared optic blasts. Megatron staggered back. But he wouldn't let that stop him.
Spyke shot a few spikes at him. But they broke, against Megatron's skin. Jean tried to use her telekinesis; to keep him back. It was working, for a bit. But Megatron was a fighter. He fired his fusion cannon; at the ground, near the X-Men. They fell down, hard. Cyclops. Jean. Rogue. Spyke. Shadowcat. Nightcrawler. They were all, knocked unconscious. The only X-Man, left standing, was Wolverine. Megatron received several cuts, thanks to him. He tried to attack wolverine. But he was too quick. Energon dripped from his armor; where Wolverine slashed him.
"ENOUGH!" Megatron shouted; before he smashed his fist, on top of Wolverine. Logan tried to get back up. He couldn't fail. Jack was depending on him. But Megatron, again, smashed him. Effectively, knocking him out. Megatron thought that it was over. Until, Bulkhead body slammed him.
"You're going down, bucket head!" Bulkhead taunted, as he slammed Megatron, into the wall.
Back at the Vector Sigma chamber; Jack was swatting the Scraplets, with his pipe. All things considered; it was a good thing that his bones, weren't covered in metal, right now. If they were; the Scraplets would probably be making a meal, out of him, as well. Because of what was happening; machine was starting to conk out. "Oh no! Don't quit, now!" Jack implored. He heard a familiar hum; coming from, down the tunnel. He assumed; that it was the sound of Arcee's engine. But it wasn't. Instead, it was the Insecticon.
It transformed, and landed; a few feet, away from Jack. It started to come closer. "BACK OFF, BUG!" Jack threatened, as he raised his pipe. At this point; he really wished that he could use his claws. The Insecticon stopped, just short of Jack. It looked afraid. Jack turned around; and understood, that it was afraid of the Scraplets. This gave him, an idea. He threw one of the Scraplets, at the con. It latched on to him, and started shooting. Soon, the rest of the Scraplets, followed suit. The Insecticon was getting devoured; as it fell, from the platform.
The Matrix, then finished downloading. Jack grabbed the key, and started running. He was met, by Arcee. "I have The Matrix." He told her.
"Let's roll!" She said, before transforming; and driving them both, back to the Space Bridge. They stopped, just short of the portal; because Ratchet wasn't responding to their communications. Something, wasn't right. Jack could see, that she was concerned. But at the same time; they couldn't, not go through the portal. On the other side of the Bridge; all of Megatron's enemies, had been knocked out. He pulled out his sword; and was waiting for Arcee to step through.
"Come, Arcee! So that I might end the lineage of the Primes, for all time."
"I cannot allow that to happen, Megatron." Megatron turned around; to see Orion, exiting a Ground Bridge.
"And why should you care, Orion Pax? You are no Prime." Megatron stated.
"That may be true. Or yet, another deception. But, this much, I do know. My sympathies, lie with the Autobots. And you, are not one of us." Orion said, as he deployed his blades. Megatron frowned. He had now, lost control, of Orion Pax. Orion charged at Megatron; with the intention, of striking him. But Megatron blocked his blade, with his arm. Before delivering a powerful punch, to Orion's chest. Orion fell, to his knees.
"Your Spark, may be in the right place, Orion." Megatron slammed him, into the ground. Orion was struggling, to get up. "But you have much to learn; before you can hope to ever again, stand your ground, against me. A moment, sadly; which shall never come." Megatron raised his sword; ready to finish this. But, at that time; Arcee rush through the Space Bridge, and tackled Megatron. While she was keep him occupied; Jack approached Orion. He held up the key, to Vector Sigma.
Orion knew what that was. What was about to happen, was a great honor. It was because of this; that Orion found himself, asking one very important question. "Are you...certain, I'm worthy?"
"You have no idea!" Jack said. To him, there wasn't a doubt, in his mind; that Optimus was worthy of greatness. Energy shot from the key; and into The Matrix. Arcee was shooting at Megatron. Until he grabbed her; and slammed her against the wall.
"How nice of you, to join our little reunion! Now, if you please! The Matrix!" Megatron commanded, from Arcee. Out of the corner, of his optics; Megatron could see Jack, reloading The Matrix, into Orion. Realizing that he went after the wrong person; Megatron dropped Arcee, and ran towards the other two. Ratchet had recovered; and tried to stop him. But Megatron swatted him away. The download was complete; and Optimus took back, the key. "NO!" Megatron shouted, as he jumped forward, with his sword. Intending to strike down, his enemy.
The Autobot leader, caught his sword. "Megatron." Optimus said, before engaging his battle mask. "Be gone!" Optimus delivered punch, after punch. With the last one, sending Megatron, flying. Both the X-Men, and Autobots, had recovered. They gathered around the Prime. "Ratchet, how did we arrive, here?" Optimus inquired.
"Long story, old friend." Ratchet answered. The Autobots radioed back to base. They said that Optimus, and Jack; were both, with them, and safe. The other Humans celebrated. But June, just breathed a sigh of relief. Megatron, got back up; and started shooting. A Ground Bridge, opened up; next to everyone, that was gathered. It led back to Autobot base.
"Autobots, fall back!" Optimus ordered. Megatron was rushing towards them. The X-Men went through the portal. Arcee grabbed Jack, and jumped through. Ratchet and Bumblebee, went through.
"This time, he's coming with us." Bulkhead said, before he left.
The one who remained, was Optimus. Megatron ran towards him, while firing. Optimus returned fire; before leaping into the Bridge. The Ground Bridge, then vanished. Megatron roared, in anger. His enemies, had escaped him.
Back at base, their were a few people; waiting for the others, to return. There were Jack's friends. His mom. Agent Fowler. Even Professor X was there. They came through the portal; and Jack removed his helmet. The first person to greet him, was his mother. She ran up to him, and hugged him. After the last of them were through; the Ground Bridge closed. Optimus disengage his battle mask; and stood before everyone.
"Optimus?" Raf asked. He wasn't sure, if it was Orion Pax, that they were seeing; or, Optimus Prime.
"Hello, Raphael!" Optimus answered. That put to rest, any lingering doubts.
"Whoa!" Raf replied.
"The big guy remembers us. Woohoo!" Miko chanted, while jumping for joy.
Optimus took a look, at his arm; and noticed a Decepticon insignia. "Although, it seems there is much, I do not remember."
"Optimus, it has truly been, our darkest hour. But, know this! From every indication, your Spark; never ceased being that, of an Autobot." Ratchet told his old friend. Everyone gathered around; to welcome back, their once lost, friend.
Professor Xavier, rolled up to Optimus. "You must be Optimus Prime. It's nice to, finally, meet you! My name, is Professor, Charles Xavier. Jack thinks very highly, of you. So much so; that he was willing to risk his life, to save you. He said that you saved the world; and everyone on it. Thank you, for that. I would be honored, to get to know the man; that one of my students, holds, in such high regards!"
Optimus knelt down. "The honor, would be, all mine, Professor Xavier!"
"Please, call me Charles!" The Professor said, with a warm smile. The rest of the X-Men, took this opportunity, to get to know the Autobots; and explore more of the base. Logan, decided to have a chat, with June.
"So, aliens, huh?" Logan murmured.
"Yeah." June replied.
"And you thought, I was going to put Jack in danger!" He jested.
"The Autobots protect him. They try to protect everyone. The difference between you, and them; is that they try to keep Jack, out of dangerous situations. That's why, I want Jack to continue his training, with the X-Men." This surprised Logan. "I may not like it. But, the simple fact is, I can't stop him. He's going to be, in more danger. Because, he's going to put himself, in those situations. Mainly, for the sake of others. He will always use his powers; to try to save people. Because he believes, that it's right.
You've recently come, back into his life. And you're a big part of it. Being with people, like the Autobots; or, the X-Men. Being with you. It's been good, for Jack. When it comes down to it. We are raising, a hero, in the making. Jack is going to get into, a lot of trouble. So, I want you to promise me; that you'll train him, harder than any other X-Man. I want him to be able, to handle anything; that comes his way."
"I will." Logan said. He placed hand, on June's shoulder. "And June! We've got a good kid. You should be proud."
"I know. And, I am." She responded.
Jack had changed out of the space suit; and back into his usual clothes. He saw Rogue, standing in the Human area. He went to join her. "Rogue! I just wanted to say; I could never thank you enough, for what you did."
"I really didn't do anything special."
"Yes you did. You, and the X-Men; bought us, the time we needed. We couldn't have got Optimus back; if it wasn't for you. You saved his life. So, thank you!"
"Well...you're welcome!" Then she clutched her left shoulder; and winced, in pain.
"What's wrong? Are you okay?" He noticed that she had a few gashes, on her uniform. All the X-Men did. Courtesy of their fight, with Megatron.
"It's nothing. Just a small cut. Megatron shot the ground; where we were standing. It blew us all, in different directions. I hit the ground, pretty hard." Jack looked at the site, of her injury. Underneath the torn fabric, of her uniform; he saw a cut. A cut, that was much bigger; than she let on. Rogue could see the worried look, on Jack's face. "Don't worry about it! I can have someone look at it, later."
"Or, you could take my healing factor; and get better, now." Jack said, as he held his hand out to her.
Rogue wasn't expecting that kind of offer, from him. "Jack...I...I don't know. If I touched you; I wouldn't just get your powers. I would get your memories, too. Everything about you, would pour into me. Plus, it's not, exactly, a pleasant experience."
"I'm not afraid. I trust you, Rogue! We're both Mutants. And you already know about the Autobots. There's nothing more, for you to learn. I don't have any more secrets. Trust me!" Jack said, with a disarming smile.
Rogue was hesitant, for a moment. But then, she relented. Jack had complete faith, in her. He showed no fear; in the face of what was going to happen. "Ok." She said. She took off her gloves; and took a hold, of his offered hand. When their skin made contact; Jack could feel himself, getting weaker. It was like, all the life; was leaving his body. Thankfully, the connection was short-lived. Rogue received a few of his memories. She saw when he met Arcee, for the first time. She saw when he met Raf, and Miko; as well as the other Autobots. She also saw a glimpses, of his past adventures.
Because of Jack's healing factor; Rogue's wounds were healed, almost instantly. Her arm, was feeling better. But, that wasn't the only one of Jack's powers, that she got. Bone claws, came bursting out of her knuckles. Her fists began to bleed. The claws were covered, in her blood. "AH!" She screamed. Jack had a sympathetic look.
"Yeah, I know. I've been there. It's not fun for me, either. But, don't worry! The pain is going to dissipate, in like, two seconds." He assured her. He was right. In just a short time; the pain that Rogue experienced, was gone. In large part, thanks to the healing factor. Jack taught her how to recall the claws. She managed to pull them, back in. A few seconds after that; her knuckles had completely healed. "You Ok?" He asked.
"Yeah. Much better, now. Thanks!"
"No problem." Jack said, before walking away.
When he was gone; Rogue started to get more, of his memories.
"I bet you're excited to see your new girlfriend!" Miko said, in one of the memories.
"You mean Rogue?" Jack responded.
"I think you two, are made for each other." Miko stated.
The memories ended, with Rogue seeing that Jack; was tossing and turning, at night. He kept thinking about her. That's what kept him from falling asleep. Rogue could feel his emotions; as if they were, her own. All that anxiety, that he felt. Everything she saw. Everything she felt. It made her realize; that, on some level, Jack had feelings for her. Jack was cute. He was decent. He was loyal. The thought, that he fancied her; made her blush, a little.
AN: Sorry! I tried to make this chapter, shorter than the last one. But, it's hard to turn multiple episodes, into one short chapter. I had fun, writing some parts, of this chapter. Just so you know. The only Mutants, that know about the Autobots, besides Jamie. Are the core X-Men. Plus Wolverine, and The Professor. They were the ones, in the Danger Room; when Jack made the introductions. The other residents, of The Institute; will be made aware, later on. Also, the memories that Rogue got, from Jack; are references, from a previous chapter.
If you didn't like something, about this chapter. Then, that's all, you have to say. Don't go out of your way, to be a jerk, in the reviews! Be honest, but fair!
STAY AWESOME!
