Kuroko and Konori stood at the door of the forensics laboratory, waiting for the test results to arrive.
After finding the terrorist Hatsuya Kaitabi covered in what looked like webbing, he was freed from the strange substance and brought to AntiSkill for questioning. The substance was taken by both Judgement and AntiSkill for testing to see if they could identify the user's power, and what their level is.
Whoever was able to produce such a complex and flexible substance was most likely a Level 3 to 4, although it's still a mystery as to why webbing was the result.
A moment later the door opened, and a young woman exited. She looked to be around mid-20s, wearing a pink short sleeved polo shirt, and black pencil pants, all of her clothes covered under a white lab coat. Her shoulder length brown hair was tied up in a small ponytail, with maroon highlights dyed in some parts of it. And modest clothing did nothing to emphasize her mature figure.
She was Yuri Nakamura, and she was the head forensic scientist of AntiSkill.
"So Miss Nakamura, what did you find? Anything come up with the stuff?" Kuroko asked her, to which a head shake was the answer.
"Well, it was rather strange as to its composition. If it was an esper power it would've been easier to call it a day, but the properties and structure of real arachnids." The doctor rubbed her neck and stretched her back. She must have spent a lot of time in the lab for her to do so.
Kuroko can't help but stare as the doctor's chest pushed against the pink cloth. She felt a twinge of attraction as she looked on. "W-What do you mean by that Miss Nakamura?"
"It's far better for you both to see for yourself," she said as she opened the door for the 2 young officers.
As they entered the room Kuroko and Konori looked around. It was a rather simple looking lab, by no means a flashy room at that. It was the size of a small classroom, with equipment scattered on the floor and machinery plugged in on the walls. A couple of people were at work, some resting and talking about planning for schoolwork and assignments.
Nakamura called their attention. "So anyway I was analyzing the composition and structure of the web. And what I found was this," She zoomed the image of her result for the 2 young officers to take a look.
"Ooook, what am I looking at?" Konori asked, not seeing what is shown.
"Wait a minute, that can't be... but it's impossible," she heard Kuroko mutter.
"So you know what it is. Tokiwadai sure don't fool around. Yeah, it's what you exactly see in here."
"But to do so, to create such an intricate web structure such as this would take several years of development. It's possible that the esper who did this-"
"Yeah, no we ruled that out. There was no AIM field detected in the webbing."
"WHAT!?" Kuroko was shocked, and Konori was too but she was too confused to follow their conversation for her to show it. "B-But if that's the case then this is naturally created spider silk! Have you scanned the DNA of the silk?"
"Yeah I have, or tried to at least; it seems that after around 15 minutes the web degrades and dissipates into random proteins. Which is strange, considering the purpose of the lab is to isolate evidence from outside elements."
"It sounds way too convenient," Kuroko commented. Konori wasn't sure why, but a chill ran down through her spine.
'That's weird, it wasn't this cold before,' Konori thought.
Somewhere a "man" grinned an eerie grin.
"Well we could try next time, at the very least we managed to scan the properties of the webbing before it degraded. As you can see here the web is naturally occurring, the structure of the web is very similar to how spiders create theirs. But the thing is, we don't know how it is being created. No other esper, as far we are concerned, has ever shown abilities that could result in this. The closest I could think of was the #2 Level 5's ability Dark Matter, but as I said his constructions at least emit an AIM field."
Thanks to Miss Nakamura's explanation Konori had an inkling of understanding with what they're dealing with; an unknown individual with the ability to create webbing like this instantly.
"If this was an esper with a construct-type ability, what level could you think they'd be Miss Nakamura?"
"By my estimates, we're looking at a potential Level 3 to 4 esper in our hands. But as I said earlier it's not the case this time. This is purely natural webbing."
"So what could make something like this?" Kuroko asked.
"I have 3 suggestions," Nakamura held 3 fingers to give her point. "It's either a massive man-eating spider," the 2 officers shuddered, "or someone made the webbing themselves and used a specialized device to release it, or they are a Gemstone. We can rule out the other 2 out since 1.) Hatsuya is still alive and 2.) I would consider it a waste of time for anyone that intelligent to be a vigilante when they could use their smarts to go beyond crimefighting." Nakamura explained cooly.
The 2 officers nodded at her logic (and let out a sigh of relief at her crossing out the giant spider). But then that leaves out...
"As I said, the webbing emits no AIM Field like Dark Matter. However the Seventh's abilities do not correspond truely to Academy City categorization due to his being a Gemstone yes? Maybe start off from there?"
Misaka was left to her own thoughts as she reminisces the events of yesterday.
She sat on a two-person bench at one of the parks of District 7, the night already showing itself due to the stars showing themselves up at the sky and the lampposts brightening the path. On her hand was an arcade coin she was fuddling with as she sat without a stir.
It was too damn close. If she hadn't panicked she would've never dropped the coin like she did. And they could've died.
Until he came in.
He stepped in, blocked the explosion, and like the wind, dissappeared without a trace.
However as she was the only one there who could plausibly stop an explosion like that she was lauded as the savior of the day.
Oh boy, if they just knew how screwed she really was when they found out...
Afterwards she never saw the boy again for a couple of days. Almost as if he was avoiding her.
Mikoto felt an unexplainable sense of irritation at that. "Seriously you do something like that and then disappear without fanfare... what a pain," she sighed as she rubbed her eyes. "I could tell them it wasn't me who saved Uiharu and the girl, but they wouldn't believe me."
Mikoto felt as if her pride was slightly dented after the incident. Sure she didn't like the fame and popularity her power had given her, and the massive attention she got from both her classmates, the public and countless punks didn't help.
But she got to where she was now because of her hard work.
She had fought, struggled, and hurt her brain into tapping to her fullest potential, and eventually at around 10 she became the youngest Level 5. She joined the ranks of Academy City's elite due to this (although she would admit she can't stand those snobbish pricks who would rather drink, eat and talk about nothing all day instead of putting effort in their life).
A lot of things she didn't like about her status as Level 5, but the steps she took to get here she wouldn't regret in the slightest.
But the boy, that unremarkable, spiky haired boy just burst in and completely threw that all away.
With a flick of a wrist he blocked every single bolt she threw at him, destroyed her iron sand constructs in seconds, and most of all... he basically spat on her pride due to his devil-may-care attitude, and his willingness to keep on lying about his power.
"Level 0 my ass, there's nothing Impotent about that damn bastard's power," caustically she spat out as she leaned on the bench she sat on.
It was getting late and Kuroko was busy at Judgement. Antics aside Kuroko was a very lively girl; she'd be the one to crack up the boredom in every situation.
It just so happens that she is the icebreaker in most of those situations.
Mikoto sighed. Oh how she wished Kuroko was here if only to cure her of boredom.
Kuroko stopped her work suddenly. Konori and Uiharu noticed.
"What's wrong Kuroko? Is something the matter?"
"I just felt my Big Sis need me... Oh but I must do my work as a Judgement member... but I can't leave my Sissy alone by herself, dying of my absence... No no, Sissy we shouldn't," Kuroko was squirming in ways no 13-year-old girl should, with a rather... ahem... pleased look on her face.
"Keep your head in the game Kuroko, we'll be here all night." Konori warned Kuroko
"On second thought maybe it's good for one night she isn't here," she muttered as she shivered in vague terror.
So it was decided. Since it still wasn't curfew yet, might as well just do what she wants for a while.
She flicked the coin at a considerable height, before she brought her hand up, as if she was about to shoot at the sky.
The coin came down at a great speed; it would hit her head if she didn't catch it.
But she never did. The coin fell past her outstretched hand and was about to hit her in the forehead.
But the coin stopped in midair surrounded by a few sparks of electricity. Mikoto used electromagnetism to catch the coin right before it hit her head.
Grabbing the coin with her right hand she got up and stretched, before planning to get a drink from a certain vending machine.
Until a group of punks surrounded her.
"Well well lookie here, what you doin' here by yourself, shouldn't ya be in your home little missy?" Mikoto could see the disgusting lust the boy had in his eyes.
"Come with us we'll make sure nothing bad happens to ya?"
"That is unless you're willing to do us a favor?"
Mikoto fought an urge to instantly zap them all.
With a sigh she smiled and opened her mouth to say something until-
"Hey you!"
One of the thugs blew back a few meters away from the group, causig their attention (and Mikoto's) to turn to their unexpected guest.
Alas they were already running away from the group.
A beat of silence followed the group before they snapped out of it and ran after the boy.
"Get back here you bastard!" One of the thugs cried out as he and the others chased after the boy.
Mikoto stared at them, and looked at where the boy went.
A savage grin adorned her face. "Finally."
Kamijou walked along the park, wondering to himself, pacing around the path.
"Helping out those 3... it was a wonder for me why Zapper hadn't told them about it... I didn't even hide my identity," he muttered.
For some reason after he left the mall Judgement hadn't come in and asked him about his involvement with the incident.
Kamijou was rather suspicious of that one stroke of good luck.
Due to his misfortune he had developed a rather pessimistic outlook on his own life: to him suffering and misfortune was as natural to him as breathing. He can't even buy a simple toothbrush without bumping into delinquents and getting into fights.
He accepted it, but he still wished for a break from time to time.
But his own pessimistic nature also made him paranoid. He couldn't be certain whether or not what had happened yesterday was a good thing or not. On the one hand he nearly died when he negated the blast and protected t Zapper and the others. On the other he hasn't been ratted out by anyone yet.
"Maybe I should wear a mask, so that people wouldn't recognize me," he thought to himself. Normally he wouldn't think to do so; he helped people because he wanted to, not because someone else did or to make the world better, stuff like that.
He did good things because he loved doing good things. A rather selfish reason as to why he did what he did.
However he couldn't ignore the warnings.
One time in school his Foresight had acted up during class. He looked around for danger until he realized he was in class, and thwre was no way any danger would happen.
It was until he went home after school and saw an injured boy and girl being tended to by Judgement.
Another thing his Foresight had given was to sense not only his own danger, but others' as well. That incident showed him that.
That was around 5 days ago. Now he had been going around, helping people, saving them from street punks and more or less keeping the streets a little safer.
He still had no idea why anyone hasn't gone in and arrested him for vigilantism.
Then again with his bad luck sooner or later he'll probably get caught anyways. But before that happens he'll go around and help people whenever he can.
His spider powers have made things slightly easier for him, due to his enhanced strength he could overpower larger opponents, his speed allowed him to outrun even bikes and cars, and enhanced durability made the blows he got here and there a lot more bearable.
He grabbed onto a fence climbed on it, trying to go over it, and was about to jump over when his momentum went backward, leaving him hanging in the top of the fence in an awkward manner.
"Oh shit not again," he muttered as he looked up at his right hand. No matter how much he tried it never really stops being so damn annoying like seriously stop fucking STICKING-
With massive effort he manages to take his hand off the fence. He landed on the ground on his ass, causing him to wince in pain. He looked around and glanced at his hand, and saw a few metal wires stuck to it. He wanted to remove them but he remembered he was chased, and so he continued to run.
Until after a few minutes he realized that he lost them.
"Oh great, that's a relief," he sighed. "Hopefully whoever they were harassing left before they came back. Well time to go back ho-"
He raised his hand just as a lightning bolt went to his face. The bolt dispersed as it hit his palm.
"Oh boy, just my rotten luck," he muttered.
"Well well well, we meet again, when was the last time we met, back at the mall was it?" A female voice made its way to his ears. Kamijou raised his eyes to look at them. "It seems that the stars aligned just now for this particular moment to happen."
"Congratulations on the stroke of good fortune but right now I must-"
"You could've stayed behind y'know," she interrupted.
'Goddammit what is it with everyone interrupting me?'
"I took the credit for saving those 2, called me the Hero of the Hour, but we both know what would've happened if you hadn't stepped in. And if you stayed behind you could have taken thee credit instead of me." It didn't make sense for her. Someone would go and take credit for any accomplishment they had done, whether they really did it or not. It was the natural thing to do, to admit to your deeds and achievements and gain joy from the attention. "Are you really sure you'd let someone like me get all the praise?"
Kamijou stayed silent as she ranted. He looked to be deep in thought.
Mikoto gulped as he stared at her. She didn't know what he was thinking. Perhaps she had struck a nerve.
She knew how strong this boy was. His unexplained power was testament to his strength. And as much as she wanted him to stop holding back and face her properly...
Her subconscious told her it was a bad idea from the start.
'I mean, who knows what he could do if he decided to cut loose', she thought, because to someone like her it was a terrifying fantasy.
Her breath hitched as the spiky haired boy opened his mouth, about to say something.
But instead of making a sound he merely let out a sigh not unlike a disappointed old man's. Mikoto was confused by his reaction.
"What's the point with bringing it up? It happened yesterday, no need for a fuss to happen. Also everyone got out safe and sound, it doesn't matter if I don't the credit," he simply remarked.
Mikoto was at a loss for words. 'This guy did it, because he wanted to... not for fame and fortune? What...' Within her mind Mikoto was utterly confused.
"Well if that's what you want to say to me I'll be on my way," Kamijou started to say, but stopped as the sand in front of him rose up. "Oh great this again?"
"..." But Mikoto said nothing.
"Uh, Zapper are you doing ok-"
"I said my name is Mikoto Misaka, get it through your thick skull!" She roared to Kamijou, sending another lightning bolt towards the misfortunate boy. As usual it was blocked and negated by the boy's strange power.
"Seriously Zapper we've been at this for a while now, ain't it getting boring once in a while?"
"Oh cry me a river you idiot. I haven't settled my score with you, so I expect you to come at me with everything you got!" Mikoto grinned and bared her teeth as sparks danced around her.
Kamijou was unfazed (which angered Mikoto), so he did a simple move.
He flexed his right hand. And took two steps forward. Glaring at Mikoto.
The smile Mikoto had on her face faltered quite a bit, and the sparks surrounding her had diminished. "W-What is with... he's... taking this seriously?' Mikoto didn't expect him to take it as fast he did.
Kamijou made the first move and lunged at her. His superior speed caught her off-guard.
His speed scared Mikoto. Her power had a passive ability as well, a minor electrical field around her which serves as a warning alarm for any sneak attacks. It also allowed her to react quickly and shoot her bolts at an instant.
But she couldn't get a read on him. Even as he rushed to her she couldn't properly prepare an attack quickly.
Which led to his fist hovering just inches away from her face.
It seemed that as she thought all of those in the span of a measly 2 seconds he managed to blitz her.
She clenched her eyes shut and prepared for the blow to connect. Small tears formed in her eyes. She raised her arms in a futile effort to defend herself.
Kamijou saw all of this. She looked like a small child about to get spanked by her strict parent, only this time he was the strict parent.
This wasn't the first time this had happened; 5 days ago they had fought once again, that time he was on the defense as she threw everything at him (except the Railgun), until she tried to shock him directly and grabbed his right hand. As expected it didn't work out and she left at the mercy of the boy. And she was making the same face as she did last time, only things were slightly different.
Kamijou felt a pang of guilt as he saw her defenseless state in front of him.
'Even with how much of a brat you are, I can't bring myself to hit you,' Kamijou thought.
Kamijou's fist didn't connect. Mikoto was stumped at the fact that she wasn't hurt.
"Are you done?" She opened her eyes and only saw the boy standing normally, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyebrows raised and his face wearing an amused smile.
"W-Wha-?"
"I mean seriously if you hadn't made a face like that I'd probably would've hurt you a lot."
"Huh-" His words caused her face to flush as she quickly wiped away her tears. It seemed she forgot her anger at that moment. After all he had nearly punched her. "Shut i-it, I'm not crying you're crying!"
"Yeah right."
"M-Moouuuuuuuuu!" She stomped and waved her fists at the boy, but her fists weren't that painful.
"So, now we're even? I got to cut loose against you, now will you leave me alone?" Kamijou said.
"Eh? Oh, u-uh... w-well-" Mikoto stammered. Her eyes were wandering everywhere, her face was red, and her body was fidgeting. But she held her ground. "Y-Yeah, I guess I could give you a break."
"...Mmmkay." Kamijou tried to sound casual but deep down he was rejoicing.
"But!" She interjected. Her face was still flushed but she had a look of determination. "I won't go down this easily next time! I'll get stronger you'll see!"
Kamijou stared at the determined face. "Okay then, I'll look forward to that," he sighed.
"That's a promise!"
"Yeah yeah."
After a while they left and went their separate ways. With Kamijou the victor and Mikoto the reluctant loser.
And with no one around it seemed that this particular fight out of dozens wouldn't be noticed by the general public.
Or so it seemed...
"Hmmm. Even with the limited power the Web had granted the Imagine Breaker he's progressing exponentially," the human said.
"Would this be considered a cause for concern sir?" A female voice said their concern to the man within the container.
"No. Not really, in fact it seems I may have to adjust the plans a bit slightly for now."
The man grinned.
"With the pawns set the game is about to start. But first..."
He had a thought.
"Perhaps showing his face might not be beneficial in the long run. Perhaps... a disguise?"
