Alexis left her oldest daughter downstairs. Kristen had tried to talk to her again, but she couldn't deal with the irresponsible choices that had been made while worrying for her other daughter and now her son. She had promised Addison she'd be up and that's what she needed to do. She grabbed her cell phone from her purse. She had accidentally turned the ringer off in her haste to get to Addison. She had 2 missed calls from GH. Her son would be ok, he would. She told herself as she climbed the stairs and walked down the hall, knocked, then walked into Addison's bedroom and quietly closed the door. Addison was sitting on the window seat in her room, freshly showered, pjs on, staring outside. Addison made eye contact with her mother, and Alexis knew just by looking at her she wasn't ready to talk. She reached for the hair brush on the bureau and walked quietly over to her daughter, and sat next to her on the window seat. She started to brush Addison's still damp hair and then began to braid it like she did when she was a little girl.
Addison appreciated her mother's quiet show of support and passed her the hair band on her wrist and as her mother finished the braid, she turned to face her. "What did Krissy tell you?"
"Just that you asked her to take you to this party." Alexis said quietly.
"Don't be mad at her. I forced her; I told her she owed me. If you're mad at anyone, you should be mad at me for being so stupid." Addison said, adjusting so that she could face her mother. She made eye contact and then looked out the window at the snow.
"You are not stupid and I'm not worried about Krissy's poor judgment right now. I'm worried about you. Are you feeling ready to talk about what happened?" She asked, trying to catch her daughter's gaze.
"Not really. Is that ok?" Addison looked at her mother again.
"Tomorrow morning, maybe?" She knew she promised, but she needed to know what happened to know what next steps to take especially since Addison refused to go to GH.
"Yeah, I just can't tonight."
"I understand. Why don't you try and get some sleep, baby."
"I don't think I can."
"Come here." She said as she stood and opened her arms. Addison gratefully let her mother pull her into a tight embrace. "I love you. What if I lie here with you until you fall asleep?"
"Like when I was little and afraid of the dark?"
"Just like that."
Addison nodded and hugged her mother again before climbing into bed. Alexis went and shut off the light, adjusted the comforter and laid next to her daughter, taking her in her arms once more as she laid on her side. She kissed her daughter's head. "You're going to be ok. It's all going to be ok." She said quietly.
As he drove to GH he couldn't stop thinking about what happened to his daughter. It made him sick to think about. He knew they needed more details, but hearing her break on the stairs. Hearing his wife try and balance what their daughter needed emotionally with what they both knew should happen forensically, but more importantly for her physical health was gut wrenching. And now his son was in danger and he was flashing back to Jason and AJ and he silently prayed that Owen's head injury wasn't serious. That the CT was out of an abundance of caution. Ned arrived at GH and ran immediately into Monica as he stepped off the elevator. "How is he? How's Owen?"
"He's going to be ok. I'm glad Alan got a hold of you. Where's Alexis?" She was surprised he'd come alone.
"She's at home with Addison. It's been a long night."
"She ok?" Monica asked as they walked down the hall. Her nephew was more distraught than she expected. He was usually the calm one in a crisis.
Ned sighed. "We think she was sexually assaulted at a party tonight. So, no she's not ok. But she's also not talking about it yet. Alexis needed to stay with her. We couldn't leave her."
"Ned. I'm sorry. If either of you need anything…" Monica said as they paused outside the door to Owen's room.
"We'll ask. Thanks, Monica," he said as he walked into his son's room.
"I'll tell Tony you're here. He wanted to go over the results with you."
"Thanks." He said as Monica left and he walked over to his son's bedside and sat down on the nearby stool. "Owen. You're really ok?"
"Dad. I'm sorry- wait, where's Mom?" He said realizing his dad came alone. Worried something more happened tonight.
"She's at home with your sister." Ned explained.
"Addison's home? Is she ok?" He asked, still worried. He tried to find her. He couldn't.
"Owen, what do you know?" Ned asked, realizing his son knew something.
"Is Addie ok, Dad?" He was urgent, adamant.
"Honestly, I don't know, buddy. I'm going to call your mom and then we're going to talk about whatever it is that happened tonight." He said honestly, and Owen nodded.
She kept her phone with her, she answered immediately when his name came up on the screen. "Is he ok?" She asked sitting up, trying not to startle Addison, who sat up and watched her mom carefully. Not sure what was going on.
"He's ok. I'm waiting for Tony to come and fill me in but I'm sitting with him now and he's conscious, talking, and worried about Addison."
"Let me talk to him." Alexis insisted, getting up as she waited to talk to her son. She needed to hear his voice, in his own words that he was fine.
"Mom, what's happening?" Addison asked.
"Shhh. Try and rest. I'll be right back." Alexis said as she kissed her daughter's head and walked out of the room.
Ned passed his son the phone. "Mom? I'm sorry."
"What are you sorry for? It was an accident. I'm just thankful you weren't more seriously injured." Alexis breathed a sigh of relief hearing her son's voice on the other end of the phone.
"I'll be ok." He didn't want his mom to worry.
"I'm sorry I'm not there Owen." She felt guilty. She knew she shouldn't, but she did. It was hard prioritizing one child over the other.
"It's ok. Addie needs you. You can't be in two places at once." His sister really did need their mom more tonight. He was glad she was safe and at home and with their mom.
"I love you. I'll see you when you get home."
"I love you, too, Mom. Here's Dad." He said and passed the phone back to his father.
"Hi. How's Addison?" He asked her. It was hard to have to choose one child over the other, but it was what they had to do.
"The same. Quiet. Withdrawn." She said walking back down the hall to their daughter's room.
"Hopefully they discharge him and I'll be home soon. We'll figure this out. Love you."
"Love you, too." She said as she opened the door and went back to sit with Addison. She sat on the bed and wrapped her arm around her daughter.
"What's going on Mom? Who was on the phone?"
"That was your father–"
"He's not here? Why isn't he here? You didn't decide to–" She started to panic. She interrupted their night. They had said they needed to go out so they could talk.
"Shh. Daddy and I are fine." She couldn't believe this was what her daughter was worried about. "Your brother was in a car accident tonight and your father went to GH."
"Is Owen ok? Is he hurt?"
"Your dad is waiting to talk to the doctor, but it looks like your brother will be fine."
"Good. I'm glad. He's a good brother." She said as she leaned against her mom and Alexis kissed her daughter's head. "He was there. I should have gone to him. I didn't want to bug him and seem like the baby who needed her brother to save her." She said quietly.
"At the party?"
"Yeah."
"Does he know what happened to you tonight?" She looked at her Mom. She didn't know what Owen knew and she definitely didn't want to relive it. "Addie, talking about it might help…"
"I can't. Please, Mom…"
"Ok, just try and get some rest, I love you. You're home. You're safe and I'm right here." She whispered as she held her daughter tight.
At the hospital, Ned hung up and sat on the stool at his son's bedside. "So, what happened tonight?" He asked as Owen made eye contact with him, "And what do you know about your sister?"
"I haven't seen her since she left the party. I went to look for her, but I'm glad she made it home safe. She did make it home safely, right?"
"Your mom and I picked her up from the Webbers. She walked there." He filled in his son.
"I didn't even think to look there. I should have. It was close." He said, realizing.
"Owen, what do you know about what happened to your sister tonight?" Ned asked calmly, concerned.
"What has she told you?" He only had details from Joss. Details he inferred. He wasn't entirely sure his conclusions were correct.
He eyed his son carefully. "Nothing. She's pretty shattered, and we have ideas about what we think happened…but your Mom and I can't do anything until she opens up. But if you know something…"
"I really can't say for sure. I saw her when she first got there and then Joss came to find me because Addie took off. All I know for certain is something happened and it had to have been pretty traumatic because she left suddenly and she knew I was there, so she definitely didn't stop to think. I could have driven her home and gone back. I could have helped her." He couldn't say more. Not until he talked to his sister.
"But you went to look for her?" Ned asked, trying to understand the timeline of events.
"I did."
"And that's when you got into this accident?" Ned asked, piecing things together.
"Yeah. I spun out on some black ice, I think." He deliberately left out the part about the other car, about being on his cell phone, calling 911 to report the party and Morgan for drunk driving. He wanted Morgan to pay, but they all needed to get their story straight and who knows where Morgan was now. Not because he believed they did anything wrong, but because he didn't want to put words in his sister's mouth.
"Owen, be honest, you weren't drinking, were you?"
"I swear. I wasn't. I told Will I'd stay sober. I'd drive him and the guys back. I wouldn't. Not after you told me about what happened to Jason."
"Good, good. Because when Alan said you were in a car accident and needed a head CT, I flashed back to that night and I prayed to God nothing like that would ever happen to you."
"I'm ok, Dad. Really."
"I know and I'm so grateful." Ned said as Tony walked into the room.
"Ned, I'm glad they got in touch with you. Owen, how are you feeling?"
"I still have a pretty bad headache…"
"So how is he? Really."
"We'll give you something for that. Ned, we can talk in the hall."
"I'm old enough to know what's going on." Owen insisted.
"You are. Tony, he's ok right?"
"We've ruled out any bleeding or spinal and neck injury. But, he did lose consciousness and has a severe concussion. That means you're going to need physical and cognitive rest, Owen. We want to see him in a few days and make sure he's recovering ok."
"When can he be released?"
"We've monitored him closely here the last few hours. I feel comfortable sending him home tonight, but just watch him closely. Rest is the best thing for you right now, Owen."
"Thanks, Tony." Ned said and Tony left the room.
"What about my car, Dad?"
"We'll deal with that tomorrow."
"I'm not going to lose it. Am I?"
"No, it was an accident. Don't worry about that. I'm going to go see about your release papers. I'll be right back."
Ned walked to the nurse's station and was about to ask about his son's release papers when he saw Mac, walking Morgan onto the elevator. Carly and Michael close behind. He could only wonder what the kid did now. He wondered if he was at the party. He wondered if now his wife would be off to the PCPD because the kid clearly was at least a person of interest in whatever Mac was investigating. He pulled out his phone and texted Alexis, told her they'd be leaving GH soon. She replied she'd be there waiting. He was relieved. He knew deep down she wouldn't have left Addison alone that night, but he wanted the confirmation. He felt guilty for questioning it, but he also knew how she felt about upholding her commitment to her clients. She had put this obstacle in their path. They really needed to talk and now they had been thrust into another crisis and nothing was more important than their kids.
Sonny had called her. She sent it straight to voicemail. Whatever was happening was nowhere near as important as her children that night. She sat up when she heard the car pull in the driveway. They were home and she silenced her phone, she knew Sonny would call again and she had no intention of answering or starting a fight with her husband about it. She looked at Addison and kissed her head. She had finally fallen asleep and she gently got up out of her daughter's bed and quietly closed the door to her room as she went downstairs. Ned and Owen walked through the door as she reached the bottom step and she immediately went to hug her son.
"Thank God you're ok." She said as she held her son in her arms.
"I told you I was. Dad told you I was."
"I needed to see it for myself, monkey." She said as she touched the cut on his forehead.
"Mom, what did I tell you…" He had told her years ago that he didn't want to be called that any longer. He wasn't a little kid anymore.
"I know, I know. But to me you'll always be that mischievous little boy who would climb anything and couldn't keep his feet on the floor. You'll always be my little monkey."
He dropped it. He knew it was just one small way his mom showed them all she loved who they were individually. They each had a nickname that only she would use. "It's a wonder I love a sport that requires serious footwork to be any good."
"It truly is." Alexis smiled at her son.
"How's Addie?" He worried about his sister.
"She's asleep. You should probably try and go get some rest, too. How's your head?"
"I'm ok. Just a headache."
"You have a pretty bad concussion, Owen. You should go try and get some rest." Ned clarified.
"Did they say when I could take some aspirin?"
"Not for another couple hours, buddy. Try and rest. We'll be up to check in on you in a little bit."
"Ok. Thanks."
"Night, Owen. We love you." Alexis said. She watched her son walk up the stairs and Ned touched her shoulder. She turned to him once she knew Owen was out of earshot. "So what did you find out because he was definitely at that party."
"He was. He went looking for Addison when he heard she ran off."
"Does he know what happened to her? What did he tell you?"
"He didn't seem to, but he knows more than he's saying. That much I'm certain of."
"What is going on with our kids? Are we that distracted that–"
"Hey this isn't your fault. It isn't either of our faults."
"But Addison was likely…if we had paid more attention maybe…"
"Shh, I know. I know. I feel it, too." He said as he pulled his wife closer. It was a traumatic night. They stood and held each other before they both went upstairs to check on their kids.
Alexis walked into her son's bedroom. He was asleep, and she adjusted the comforter and kissed his forehead, silently thanking God he was in fact ok. She walked back down the hallway and stood outside Kristen's door. Her light was still on and she knocked before entering.
"Krissy?" She asked and her daughter looked up at her from the book she was reading. "I'm sorry I got so angry."
"I'm sorry, too. Addie's hurt and it's my fault."
"Listen, I'm disappointed in your decision making. There's no question. But what happened to her, it's not your fault. It's the fault of whoever did this to her."
"Did she tell you anything else?"
"Not yet. She's going to need us all."
"I'm here for whatever she needs, Mom."
Alexis nodded, knowing Kristen would be there. Her daughters fought but they loved each other. "I love you, Kristen and I hope you know that."
"I do know. I love you, too. How's Owen? Is he ok?"
"He has a concussion, but he's going to be fine."
"I'm glad. Hey Mom?" Kristen stopped her mother before she left the room.
"What?" Alexis asked as she stood in the doorway.
"I'm sorry I attempted to blame you for my choice. It's not your fault either."
"It's forgotten, bug. Get some sleep." Alexis said before she left her daughter's room and quietly closed the door.
As Alexis checked in on Owen, Ned quietly walked into his daughter's darkened room. Addison sat up as the light from the hall filtered in. "I'm sorry if I woke you, sweetheart."
"It's ok. I wasn't sleeping."
"I just want to tell you that I'm here for you, Addison. I completely understand if you'd rather talk to Mom right now. But I love you, and I'm here if you need me, ok? I'll see you in the morning, sweet girl."
"No french toast, Daddy. I know you love me. But, you don't need to make french toast because…"
He interrupted, "Ok, no french toast. Try and get some sleep, sweet dreams."
"Wait–" Addison stopped him from leaving.
"What is it? What can I do?" Ned asked, stepping fully into the room.
"I can't shut my brain off and fall back to sleep. Will you sing to me? Like you used to?"
"Of course."
Addison laid back down and Ned sat in the window seat and quietly sang to his youngest daughter. He made eye contact with Alexis as she entered the room, who he knew was trying hard to keep it together as she took in the scene before her. She sat by her daughter's bed and gently rubbed her back. When Addison had finally fallen back to sleep, Ned stood and waited for his wife before they both quietly left the room. He took his wife's hand as they walked down the hall to their own bedroom and crawled into bed and into each other's arms finding solace in each other as they both tried to sleep themselves, worry about their children haunting their thoughts, keeping them awake.
