Ch. 42: Kūkō arumagedon part 2
Narita International Airport.
The scene shifts at the runaway where a few airplanes are stationed and awaiting orders from the watchtower to give them clearance to take off, and one of the planes showed that two pilots are watching through the front window, seeing that several zombies are walking around, blocking the runaway, and thus giving the pilots something to worry about.
The pilots then saw that amongst the zombies loitering are some of their colleagues within the airport, and there the pilots were forced to recall what happened days ago, which the pilots saw the zombies made their way through the airport and began attacking and biting people.
Everything happened so fast and because at that time no one is aware of the nature of the pandemic, the zombies multiplied and the airport was nearly overrun by the undead, with only a few staff members narrowly escaped and hid at the Control Tower. The pilots had to rely on the communication from the watchtower and await further instructions.
"Damn it."
"…"
"How did this happen?"
"I wish I figured it out…"
"This is too much…"
"Stay strong."
"…"
"…"
The pilots saw more zombies walking within the runaway area and this made the pilots sighed in dismay as they know that running over the zombies is out of the question as it might affect the plane's take-off attempt, and all the pilots can do is wait.
"Geez…why can't we just…"
"You know the reason why."
"…"
"If the wheels get damaged landing might become impossible."
"Yeah, yeah…"
"Lets put out faith on the watch tower…"
"Fine."
"Good."
Not far, a woman is seen on hiding in one of the establishment within the perimeter of the runaway. She is seen brandishing a weapon that looked like it is used by snipers.
The weapon she uses professionally is the Heckler & Koch PSG-1, an accurized semi-automatic version of the German G3 military rifle designed for competition, military, and police use. It's 1230mm long, weighs 7.2kg, and fires the 7.62x51mm NATO Cartridge. The Sighting system is the Hensoldt ZF6X42PSG1. Her sidearm is a 9mm SIG Sauer P226 pistol. It's equipped with a red-dot sight and tactical flashlight.
The woman sports a tanned skin with purple hair. It is shown that she wears a black combat suit with a bulletproof vest. She is also shown to be wearing a white choke collar along with shooting glasses. Underneath her combat uniform, she wears a white sports bra.
The woman is identified as Rika Minami, and it is revealed that she is an alumni of Hope's Peak Academy, having the talent of Super Highschool-level Sniper, and there she is taking aim at some of the zombies that are walking aimlessly at the runaway.
She is joined by another professional sniper and asked her if she is okay, which she smirked and assured that she is fine.
"No worries. I'm doing fine."
"Really?"
"Yup."
"You sure…?"
"Uh-huh."
"Okay. Then we should get things started."
"Right."
"Shall we...?"
Minami and her fellow sniper hid themselves and aimed their rifles at the targets, and there the fellow sniper reminded Minami about one thing: to kill the zombies they must shoot the head and the bullets must penetrate the zombies' brain to ensure that the undead finally become dead.
"You got my drift…?"
"Yeah."
"Remember…"
"Aim for the head. Make sure their brains are struck by the bullets."
"Good."
"Can I shoot now?"
"Go ahead."
"Okay."
Nodding, Minami began to open fire, shooting the zombies on their head and one by one the zombies are slowly killed off and within a matter of minutes the runaway is cleared and she contacted the watchtower and informed the staff that the runaway is now cleared and the airplane can safely take off.
The staff members nodded and they contacted the pilots, informing them that they now have permission to leave the tarmac and leave the airport, which the pilots nodded in agreement, relieved to hear that the runaway is cleared and ready to be used.
"Finally."
"Thank goodness."
"Looks like we can fly now."
"Yeah."
"Hope we won't see any of them elsewhere…"
"I wonder though."
"Anyway…preparing for take-off…"
"Right."
The airplane then drives off before it flew away, and Minami watched the plane leave, and she wondered if things are going to be okay, but then something unexpected happened, as more zombies came and invade the runaway due to being attracted by the sounds of the airplane leaving.
Minami sighed as she thought that things are going to be okay, but realized that her assumption is wrong and her fellow sniper tells her to think of this as an exercise, which she just sighed and said that what he just mentioned is just a poor excuse.
"An exercise, huh?"
"Just think of this as…"
"Not a good way to make me feel better…"
"Just lifting your spirits…"
"Not working."
"Well…"
"Lets shoot those fodders."
"Be my guest"
After some 10 minutes the two snipers took down about 25 zombies, and the airport slowly regained a portion of peace that hasn't been seen for the past few days. And while peaceful, it was hardly felt, as there are no people within the airport. Only corpses.
By then her smartphone rang and she checked it. It was a Messenger call and the caller turn out to be Kyosuke Munakata, her schoolmate from Hope's Peak Academy, and there the two alumni talked as this was their first time interacting after some time after graduating from Hope's Peak Academy.
As the two greeted, Munakata asked her how is she doing, and after hearing her reply, the former SHSL Student Council President cautioned her from receiving orders from her superiors, as he explained to her that some policemen and soldiers who survived the zombie onslaught are with him.
He further explain how and why some of the soldiers were killed after being forced by their superior officers to keep fighting despite being outnumbered and running low on ammunition, as well as being disorganized.
"Are you serious, Munakata…?"
"Yes. Deadly serious."
"How did you…?"
"The survivors we saved…they told us what happened."
"Seriously…?"
"I'm afraid so."
"Could you…show me…proof…?"
"…"
As the Messenger app is ongoing, the video call was also activated, and there Minami was quite surprised to see that some of the cops and soldiers who are under Munakata's care turn out to be some of her colleagues at work.
She is starting to take Munakata's word the moment she saw the live video and hearing the testimony of her surviving colleagues, and she nodded while assuring to Munakata that she will be careful about accepting orders from her superiors.
"Okay. I get the drift."
"Good."
"I'll be extra-careful."
"Just be on your guard."
"Sure."
"If…the odds are stacking against you…you know what to do."
"I got the gist."
"…"
After that, the video call ended, and the scene shifts at the building that served as a temporary headquarters where Munakata is taking command, and there Sakakura asked Munakata if he persuaded Minami to come here, feeling that her talent as the SHSL Sniper would be a good addition.
Munakata said that it'll be up to her, but said that he has a feeling that she would consider his offer given her reaction when told of the possible corruption within the army, and that the moment her superiors are forcing her to discreetly commit suicide, Minami would come here.
"And that's what I think."
"…"
"Minami would know what to do. So I'm sure that she would come."
"Really?"
"Yes."
"Then all we have to do is wait."
"Indeed."
"Damn."
Great Gozu and Bandai watched on as they are hoping that Minami would be okay, as she is a talented person and that she must survive as they are now aware of the corruption within the Diet that they are willing to sacrifice innocent lives just to stay in power and in control.
Back at the airport, Minami and her fellow sniper are resuming in shooting down the zombies as some are making their way towards the runaway, and the two wondered if they should get stronger weapons in an effort to speed up and finish off the zombies.
After some three minutes the two snipers got a respite and are taking a short break, but then her phone rang and she answered it, where her superior commander spoke to her, and ordered her to go to a certain area to help contain the situation and maintain order.
Her fellow sniper checked his Waze app and realized that the area that her superior commander wanted her to go is already infested with zombies, and both he and Minami realized that Munakata is right. The higher-ups intend to get rid of her and are using the zombie outbreak as an excuse to send her to her death.
Minami feigned innocence and said that she is busy fighting the zombies at the Narita International Airport and protecting the remaining staff members, but her superior commander ordered her to leave the airport and forget everything else, stating that this is an order and it is for the sake of maintaining order in Japan.
"Minami. You will do exactly as I command you to do."
"I cannot leave a few survivors here at the airport…"
"Forget them. Go to the designated area that I assigned you. That is the order."
"…"
"You are doing this for the safety of our country. Please do as you are told."
"…very well…"
"Good. Depart immediately. Do not look back."
"…"
Minami and her fellow sniper glanced at each other and she tells her superior commander that she will do as told before exiting the call, and her fellow sniper said that he will take her smartphone and use a voicing app to disguise himself and sound like Minami so as to fool her superior commander.
He tells her to protect the airport if the situation permit her as he knew that she is being forced into a trap, and Minami nodded as she gave him her smartphone and he left, as he boarded a motorcycle and sped off.
Minami then resume in monitoring the situation at the airport and saw more zombies heading for the tarmac, and she sighed as she wondered if there is a way to expose the corruption now that the current administration is already crumbling in just a few days.
-x-
At the military base, the superior commander and the corrupt general are there, watching the live news and there they received report that Minami is heading to the designated area she is ordered to, as they are monitoring her via her smartphone, unaware that it was Minami's fellow sniper who is heading there.
The two men smirked as they are pleased that with Minami about to be killed, there won't be anyone who will stand in their way as they intend to keep the corruption within the army hidden, and are hoping that the prime minister and the emperor would be killed so that the minister of justice would take control of Japan.
"Looks like everything is working accordingly."
"Indeed."
"With Minami out of the way…we can now focus on maintaining control."
"And take control of whoever would serve us."
"Yes."
"And now we can win."
"Indeed."
"Ha-ha-ha…"
To Be Continued...
