Chapter 6: Is This a Date?

It's the last day of the first week of school, and students are excited to finally finish up classes and have some freedom. Yuki heard some of them already have plans like heading into the city for one reason or another. In her performing arts class, Yuki is playing the harp like before. Only this time she's playing alongside Hana who's singing. The two together produce such a sublime melody that the rest of the class, even the teacher, appear hypnotized. They can't take their eyes off of the two of them. When the two of them finish, the class applaud with fervor.

"Such beauty. This class is what gives me the strength to get up in the morning," Professor Artwell wipes away her tears with a handkerchief.

"Thank you, Professor," Yuki bows her head. "She's right, you really do have a lovely voice Hana,"

"Haha, well I try. A girl's gotta have one hobby or two," Hana chuckles.

"Alright class, that's it today. Remember to cover the assigned readings. I'll be quizzing you all on them next week," Professor Artwell says before the students leave.

"So, any plans for this weekend, Yuki?" Hana asks as they walk through the hallway.

"Hmm, I was planning on going out into the city. The last time I visited the city was a few years ago when I came with my parents. I was also invited to a small tea party with the princess. Would you like to come with me, Hana?" Yuki asks.

"Hmm, to the city, no. I know people will freak out upon seeing me and I really don't feel like dealing with the drama. As for the tea party, I don't know. The princess has no issue with me being an arachne, but what about her servants or guards?" Hana says.

"Hmm, if they did, I doubt they'd say anything in front of the princess, especially if she's okay with you. They wouldn't want to get a negative opinion from a member of the royal family. Besides, she said I could invite you and Hiei if I wanted to," Yuki says.

"Hmm, then maybe I'll come along for the tea party at least," Hana says.

They meet up with Hiei and head over to the cafeteria for dinner. While they're walking, Hana pulls in Hiei close from behind Yuki.

"Listen, Yuki is planning on going to the city over the weekend and was invited to a tea party with the princess. I said I'd go to the party, but not to the outing because of you-know-what. I'm giving you an opportunity here," Hana whispers.

"Huh? An opportunity for what?" Hiei asks, confused.

"Are you an idiot? I mean, it'll be just you and Yuki. Alone in the city. Having fun... just like a date," Hana lets the last word sink in.

"A-A-A-A-A date!" Hiei stutters.

"Duh, this is your chance," Hana replies.

"It's not like that at all. We don't have that kind of relationship," Hiei retorts, blushing.

"That makes this even better. You can grow closer with this, and change that dynamic," Hana replies.

"B-B-But, I-," Hiei stutters again.

"Look, you're going with Yuki to the city and that's final. You'll thank me for this one day," Hana pats her back. "Hey, Yuki, Hiei's coming with you to the city on the weekend!"

"Huh? Oh okay, it'll be nice if you're coming with me Hiei. Then I won't be alone," Yuki says before turning back.

Hiei can only groan in response, staring at Yuki's back. Guess there's no backing out of it now. Not when Yuki believes she'll be coming along. After having their dinner, Yuki went to see her maid, Carol, and inform her of her plans. Suffice it to say, Carol's reaction was a bit surprising.

"Really? You've been invited to a tea party with the princess?! And you're going to the city with Hiei?! Just you and Hiei?! Don't worry, Milady. I'll work all night tonight to prepare you an outfit perfect for each occasion," Carol had stars in her eyes.

"Uh... okay?" Yuki didn't know how to respond to that.

Carol wasn't the only one who had the same idea. In their dorm room, Hana was in her hammock, getting her silk threads together.

"Um, Hana, what are you doing?" Hiei asks.

"What does it look like I'm doing. I'm making you an outfit for your date with Yuki. You're not going in your school uniform, or the outfit you wore on our initiation day," Hana says.

"Huh?!" Hiei freezes.

"Don't worry, leave everything in me," Hana has stars in her eyes too as she gets all her limbs to work.

...

The next day, Hiei waits by a local fountain, waiting for Yuki. Hana managed to make her new outfit in only a few hours. Hiei still had her usual hair ornaments in her hair, and her katana on her hip (she was not compromising on that). However, the rest of her outfit is different. She is wearing a white yukata with red flower petal designs on it and the furisode sleeves. A red sash belt wraps around her waist. The skirt has red frills to go with the petals. A pair of black geta shoes with red string and white thigh-high stockings. Finally, her long hair is up in a ponytail.

"I can't believe Hana made me wear this. She always uses me as her dress up doll. I'll get her back for this," Hiei grumbles.

"Hiei?" Hiei looks back and is stunned by what she sees.

She sees Yuki walking up to her, wearing a dark blue dress with a skirt that goes down to her calves. The dress has white frills around the end of the skirt and on her collar and at the end of her sleeves. She's wearing white stockings and black heeled shoes. A light blue bow is wrapped around her neck. Finally, she has a white hairband with light blue frills on her hair. It looks like she had a little makeup done as well.

"Yuki..." Hiei trails off, still in shock.

"Do I look... weird?" Yuki asks.

"N-N-No, never! Actually... you look really pretty," Hiei rubs her head.

Yuki smiles and... wait, is she blushing. Hiei's heart can't take much more of this.

"Thanks. Carol apparently worked all night on this. I really like your outfit Hiei. You look cute," Yuki says.

"Ah, uh, I-I mean, well Hana worked on this for me. I've simply gotten used to being her test dummy when she makes new clothes," Hiei says.

"Still, you look really nice," Yuki says, and Hiei's heart is about to explode. "So, shall we get going?"

"Uh, yeah, I'll follow you. You know this place better than me after all," Hiei says and the two take a walk through the city.

The two had no destination in particular to go to, so they mostly just walked around. If anything caught their eye, they'd check it out. Heading to the shopping district first, they find all sorts of stores and stalls laid about. They stop by one stall selling homemade hair ornaments where Yuki picked out a new pair of flower ornaments for Hiei and Hiei picked out a silver hair clip with blue gemstones in it for Yuki. After that, the pair moved on to an antique shop and did some window shopping. After that, they started getting hungry, so it was time to eat. Yuki led to a local restaurant that her family has been to before. It's one that primarily caters to those with money, so the outside and the inside is quite fancy looking.

"Are you sure, Yuki? I doubt I can afford the food here," Hiei looks up at the place, nervous.

"It's alright. I'll pay for our meal," Yuki says.

"But you shouldn't have to-," Hiei retorts.

"Do you have more money than the daughter of a duchess?' Yuki asks, and Hiei loses her argument. "Then problem solved. Let's go. The food here is quite delicious," Yuki says and leads them inside.

Inside, they meet a middle-aged man in a nice suit standing at a podium, "Good afternoon la-," the man freezes upon sight of Hiei. "Ah, um, ladies. How may I assist you? Do you have a reservation?"

"We don't have a reservation, but we are willing to wait. My name is Yukitsuki von Crystalglove," Yuki says.

The man stumbles upon hearing her name, "Ah, L-Lady Crystalglove. What an honor to have you here. No need for waiting. We'll make sure you have a table ready for you,"

"Good, the two of us are looking forward to it," Yuki says.

"Ah, we'll find separate accommodations for your servant here," the man says.

"Huh? Yuki isn't a servant; she's my friend. We'll be eating together at the same table," Yuki says.

The man starts to sweat a bit "Ah, your kindness is inspiring, Lady Crystalglove, but you must understand, there are rules, long-standing traditions, that we need to uphold for the good of our esteemed guests. We can provide your 'friend' with food and accommodations, just... not here with the rest of our guests,"

Yuki glances back at Hiei, seeing the disgruntled look on her face.

"I see. In that case... come on, Yuki, let's find somewhere else to eat," Yuki turns around and heads to the door, taking Hiei's hand in her own.

"W-Wait Lady Crystalglove, there's no need for something so drastic as that. I just said that we'll accommodate your friend here!" the man tries to persuade her to stay.

"I shudder to wonder what kind of 'accommodations' they would be. I've been here before and I thought this was a nice business. Shame on me for being so wrong. I can assure you that my family won't be coming back here. Let's go, Hiei," Yuki exits the store, ignoring the pleas of the employee.

"Yuki... you didn't have to do that," Hiei says.

"No, I did. I'm sorry, Hiei. I didn't realize this is how they really run their business. I want to eat with you, not eat alone while you get mediocre food. You're not a servant or an animal or a slave. You're dear my friend, and I won't settle for anything less for you," Yuki says resolutely.

Hiei is stunned into silence, her eyes drifting down to her hand which Yuki has not let go of. They end up finding a nearby stall selling some food that's apparently from Hiei's country. Yuki eyes some sticks with pretty sweats stuck in them.

"What are these?" Yuki asks.

"Those are called dango. They're treats. Here, I'll buy them," Hiei pays four sticks, two for each of them.

Yuki eats one and gets stars in her eyes, "Oh, this is good," she eats another.

"They are good. I hope you get to enjoy more of my country's food, Yuki," Hiei smiles.

"I'm sure I'll like them all if you're there," Yuki says, which only makes Hiei blush.

They finish their treats and continue on with their outing. They check out a few more shops and other places along the way. Once all that was done, they notice the sun starting to set.

"Guess we spent more time out here than we thought. Shall we start making our way back, Yuki?" Hiei asks.

"I suppose so. But, let's stop for some dinner. I want to actually have a nice dinner with you, Hiei. Outside the academy for once," Yuki says.

"Well, alright. Lead the way," Hiei nods.

They walk through the streets and find another decent restaurant in the city. Thankfully, the staff here had no issue with Hiei being a kitsune and the pair found a nice spot in the back.

"Pick whatever you want, Hiei. It's on me. Consider it thanks for the dango," Yuki says.

"I'm kind of feeling bad that you paid for most of everything today," Hiei notes.

"It's fine. I'm barely into my monthly allowance," Yuki replies offhandedly.

"That was 'barely'... No, never mind," Hiei just accepts it at that point.

Sometimes, Hiei forgets that she comes from a high-ranking noble family, which means she isn't desperate for money. They decide on their meals and it's not long before their meals arrive, nice and hot.

"Aside from that one mishap, this has been fun, Hiei," Yuki says as she eats.

"You're right. I did enjoy myself today. I actually hope we can do this again sometime," Hiei smiles.

"Good. I'm glad you liked it. I really enjoyed going out with you, Hiei. I hope we can do so again as well. And maybe, one time we'll be able to take Hana with us. I don't like the idea of us out having fun while she sits at home alone," Yuki says.

Hiei sighs, "Yeah, she's gotten used to it, for better or worse. Maybe someday, more people will be calm around her and won't freak out. At least back in the Dragon Alliance, she never really had that issue, considering there were plenty of other beastmen tribes there. So, what about the princes' tea party tomorrow. Nervous?"

"I don't believe so. While it would be my first tea party with the princess, it's not my first tea party per say. Though, I haven't been to too many of them on account that I was not invited. There are plenty of noble children that don't like me on account of my lack of noble blood. But then again, my mother Fuyumi is not of noble blood, and yet she is officially recognized as the hero of our country, so many respect her while others are quick to try and curry favor with her," Yuki recollects.

"You really love your parents huh. That's a good thing," Hiei notes.

"I do. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be alive right now. I have no memories of my past, before my mother found me. Just scraping by on the streets for a short time, hungry and alone. That's why I worked and trained so hard before enrolling in the academy. I don't want to disappoint them. I want to repay the kindness they have shown me," Yuki explains.

"Family is important. It's true. But sometimes, family is more than just bloodlines and family names. It's nice that you found a family like that," Hiei says.

"Yes, and thanks to that, I got to meet you, Hiei," Yuki smiles.

"Ah! Huh?! I-I see. I'm glad... I got to meet you... as well, Yuki," Hiei stutters, her face crimson.

"Hiei, are you alright?" Yuki cocks her head in confusion.

"I'm fine!" Hiei quickly says before focusing on the rest of her meal.

They finish their dinner, pay the bill, and then leave the business to make their way home.

...

Meanwhile, in an unknown part of the continent, a monstrous creature with glowing red eyes and wielding a sword screams as it races forth. However, it quickly gets cut down by a white blade wielded by a white-haired beauty in matching clothes. Fuyumi Kusanagi.

"Hmm, to think we'd find straggler Lost all the way out here. What a mess," Fuyumi mutters.

A Lost attacks her from behind, only to get an arrow to the skull and falls to the ground. Fuyumi looks up to spot Elane kneeling on a tree branch, bow at the ready.

"At least this is better than facing an army of them," Elane says.

An explosion occurs off to the side and the pair look to see a few Lost burned to a crisp. Standing over them is Anelia, who has grown older since the war. She's taller now and her figure has filled out nicely. Her hair has grown longer and is kept in a long, braided ponytail. She is now wearing a more traditional style of mage robes in her white and black colors, though the long skirt has a slit on the left side to reveal black pantyhose and white, knee-high boots underneath. She has a new pair of white gloves as well and her signature magic staff.

"Though, it was only by sheer luck that we found these random Lost out here. Considering they're not the main reason we came all the way out here," Anelia adds.

"Still, we haven't found our true target yet," Elane jumps down from the tree to join them.

"I suggest we continue on our way. We've almost reached our destination anyway," Anelia suggests.

Fuyumi nods, "You're right. The sooner we get this mission over with, the sooner we can go back home. I missing Yukitsuki's time at school. I was hoping to see her in her school uniform," she moans.

"We are all a little worried about her being in her first year at school. But, we have to trust that all the training we put her through will help her be okay. Not to mention, that she might actually make some friends there too," Elane says.

Fuyumi sighs, "I hope so,"

"Come on, let's get going. The sooner we reach our next stop, the sooner we can rest," Elane pats her shoulder.

"You're right..." Fuyumi nods, but then smirks as she pulls both Elane and Anelia into her arms. "Though I may not get much sleep tonight, and neither will you two,"

"Oh, your libido is ridiculous sometimes," Elane sighs.

"Please... don't be too hard on us," Anelia blushes.

Yep, somethings never change no matter how much time passes by.

...

Back in the capital, Yuki and Hiei return to the academy after a pleasant day out.

"I'm going to change and take a bath. It's been a long day," Hiei says.

"Okay, I'll meet you there in a bit. Carol will want to retrieve my dress so nothing happens to it," Yuki says.

"Hana's the same way with her own work. I'm sure those two will get along soon enough," Hiei chuckles.

"Oh, Hiei," Yuki stops her. Hiei turns, only for Yuki to kiss her on the cheek. "That was for today. I had a lot of fun. I'll see you in a bit," Yuki says, leaving a frozen Hiei behind.

Hiei stares at her retreating back, raising a hand to the cheek that she kissed, "Wow..." she mutters as her face turns pink.

She enters their dorm room to find Hana sitting in her hammock, readying a textbook.

"Hey, you're back. So... how was the date?" Hana has a teasing smirk.

"Wow..." Hiei is still in shock at the kiss as she sits down on her bed.

"That good huh. Told you you'll thank me for this... Hiei?" Hana notes her friend's lack of reaction.

"We have a problem. It appears... I've fallen for Yukitsuki," Hiei realizes.

And that's the chapter. Yuki and Hiei have their first 'date' and now Hiei realizes that she's developed feelings for the person she's supposed to be protecting. How will this play out? Until then, please Read and Review.
