A/N: Something I'd like to address, before we hop into this chapter. First of all; I did my research on "Wolverine And The X-Men" in the Marvel fandom.
It turns out, that "Wolverine And The X-Men" is a tie-in to "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" , and "Hulk vs Wolverine." Chronologically; Wolverine (James Howlett) fought alongside Captain America, during World War II, in one of the episodes of "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes". Quite some time after that; he joined an organization sponsored by the Canadian government, Weapon X. He became a part of a Black Ops Mutant team, called Team X; alongside Deadpool, Mystique and Sabretooth (his best friend, at the time). During his time with the team, he and Mystique, fell in love. When he was sent on a mission to kill a man, by the name of Nord. He couldn't do it; once he saw, that he had a daughter. So, he and Sabretooth had a difference in opinion, and fought each other. James tried to save Nord, but never found him.
Things changed however, when a new scientist was brought into the command structure. A scientist by the name of, Dr. Abraham Cornelius. He had ideas of enhancing Mutants. Sometimes genetically. Sometimes surgically. When Sabretooth and Professor Truett Hudson (the boss of Weapon X) tried to conduct an experiment, on an unwilling Mystique; James went on a rampage, and helped his girlfriend escape... Only to be stopped, by Sabretooth. He held him off, swearing that he would find her, but he never did. After that, Weapon X bonded the indestructible metal alloy "Adamantium" to his bones; wiping his memory in the process. For years, after that; he spent his days, as their mindless assassin. Sometime after that; he broke away from Weapon X, and started calling himself Logan. He met a beautiful Japanese woman, named Mariko Yashida. They fell in love, and made plans to marry. But in order for this to happen, he had to face the Silver Samurai, in a duel. Logan won the duel, but they still couldn't marry. The Yakuza awaited her decision, with drawn swords. They would have killed them both; if she didn't choose the Samurai, over Logan. So, she broke it off with Logan, and married the other guy.
Years after that; he joined the X-Men. After the Mansion exploded in the first episode, he fought the Hulk in "Hulk vs Wolverine." Sometime after that; he helped fight Kang The Conqueror and Galactus; in two different episodes of "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes." Then, after that; he rejoined the X-Men, at the start of "Wolverine And The X-Men." Finally, he fought the Hulk again, in episode 7. This was when Hulk took a leave of absence from The Avengers; after his last fight with the Red Hulk.
Second, this is going to be an original chapter, in this story. I will be introducing, a famous X-Men character, from the comics. One that you may, or may not know about. I've informed you of the chronology of those three, tied together media. That means, that there's going to be so much material that I can play with.
Finally, third. Half the things I wrote to explain the chronology, I got from the Marvel Database. So, most of the credit goes to them. So please, don't sue! I am literally, broke as a joke.
Now, LET'S ZOOM THE COSMOS!
Somewhere, in a forest
It had been 4 days, since Jack's Mutant powers manifested. He got the hang of them, so far. Already, he learned that he had shapeshifting, accelerated healing, retractable bone claws and an enhanced sense of smell. Currently, Jack, Miko, Raf and Arcee; we're in a forest. They were trying to further train him, with his powers. "Seriously, Jack. Why do I have to do this? This is so lame!" Miko said, while holding a bottle of strawberry perfume. Today, they were testing his sense of smell.
"Miko, will you stop complaining and just do it, already?!" Jack spoke, wrapping a blindfold around his eyes.
"Seriously, though. Why haven't you transformed into your Mutant form? Why are we doing this in the forest, instead of in Jasper, or back at the Base? And if I have to use perfume; why does it have to be strawberry scented?" Miko asked him.
"Because, for one thing. Just because I can transform into a Mutant, doesn't mean I want to. We're in the forest because it'll be a challenge for me to track the scent, with it blowing in the wind. And, as for the strawberry perfume. I've already gotten used to your regular scent; so I wanted to track you, using something sweet." When she asked him, what he meant by that. All he had to say to that, was. "What?! When I was a kid; my mom used to wear fruit scented perfume. I liked it, okay?! It was really sweet. Alright, Raf! Give me the plugs!" Raf then handed him some ear plugs.
"Are you sure about this, Jack? I mean, a blindfold is one thing. But are you sure you want to use ear plugs, while doing this too?" Arcee asked.
"Yeah! I want to see how much animal, I can be." Jack replied.
"Okay, Jack. Whenever you're ready." Raf said to him. Jack put the ear plugs in. Miko sprayed herself with the perfume and started running through the forest. Raf started turning Jack around a few times; to give Miko a better chance at hiding. Once that was done, Jack began the hunt. Miko continued running, with Jack hot on her trail. This continued, for about a minute; before she found what she believed to be the perfect hiding spot. She hid in a bush, watching him scout the area for her. He sniffed the air; giving it a good whiff. He took a pause, before smiling. He walked in a different direction, causing Miko to think she won their game of hide and seek.
Miko released a breath of relief. She then turned her head to the side; only to come face to face, with a now transformed Jack. He was sticking his head out, from the bush. "Boo!" He said, while tackling her in an open space, to the ground. Jack was on top of her; taking off the blindfold and removing his ear plugs. He changed back to his normal form. "Now, I got you!" He said with victory, clearly evident, in his voice.
"I thought you said you weren't going to turn into your Mutant form." Miko said.
Jack helped her to her feet, before saying. "Yeah, that was the plan. But I changed my mind. Plus, I just couldn't resist the urge to freak you out." Miko, then noticed a big stick, lodged in Jack's left thigh.
"Jack, there's a stick in your leg!" Miko stated.
"What?!" Jack looked at the stick, stabbing into his leg. "Oh, would you look at that. I thought I felt a sharp, stabbing pain, while I was chasing you. Oh, man! I really liked these pants." The others arrived just in time; to witness Jack pull the stick out of his leg, and heal instantly.
Miko swiped the stick from Jack, now stained with his blood. In a typical "Miko fashion" , she asked him nearly a dozen questions, per minute. "Dude, does it hurt when your claws come out? What does it feel like when you shapeshift? How good is your sense of smell? Does it itch when you heal? Can you turn into animals too?" That last question brought a puzzled look to Jack's face. He never thought of that. Could he turn into animals?
"Well, Miko. To answer your questions. Yes, it does hurt when my claws come out. But only for about, a few seconds. Shapeshifting feels like, a good stretch. My sense of smell is quite, accurate. Yes, it itches a little when I heal. And, I don't know if I can turn into animals. I never tried, before."
"Okay, you guys! That's enough Mutant training, for one day. Ratchet, give us a Bridge." Arcee said into her comm, after speaking to them. A few seconds later, a Ground Bridge opened. They walked through, arriving at the Base.
"You know, Jack. I've been thinking. Even though they're not made of metal. There's only one other Mutant I know of, that has claws like yours; and super smell like you. Wolverine. The most famous and coolest Mutant, ever! Wait a minute, Jack! You never met your father, right?" Miko spoke.
"Yeah, so?" Jack replied.
"No reason." Miko responded. The chances that Wolverine was his dad, were a million to one. Even if he had claws, an enhanced sense of smell and a healing factor, like him. Wolverine didn't have blue skin or shapeshifting. So, Miko decided to put this theory, in the back burner of her brain.
"Whatever, Miko! I gotta get home, before my mom gets worried about me." Jack said to her. He and Arcee walked through the Ground Bridge, almost immediately after that. They appeared in his garage, with the Ground Bridge closing behind them. "Well goodnight, Arcee!"
Arcee transformed into her motorcycle form. "Good night, Jack! Sweet dreams!" She responded to him. Jack walked into his house, to his bedroom, going to sleep.
Darby Residence, the next day
Jack woke up, got dressed, and headed downstairs for breakfast. Jack then looked out the front window, not believing what he saw. "Hey, mom! Come take a look at this!" He said to his mom. She came to the window, seeing the same thing as him. A U-HAUL truck was unloading furniture, to the house next door. "Well, I guess we've got some new neighbors." Said Jack.
"Yeah, I guess so." June replied. The mother and son went outside, to greet their new neighbors. Who also happened to be mother and son, as well. "Hello! I didn't realize we were getting new neighbors. I'm June Darby and this is my son, Jack." June said, while extending her hand for introduction. The boy was a teenager, around Jack's age. He had brown hair and brown eyes, an orange t-shirt with a red M logo on it, a white long sleeve shirt underneath, black jeans with red lines going around the knees and black sneakers. His mother was a beautiful woman, with auburn hair and blue eyes. She wore a white t-shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes.
The boy shook her hand, first "Hey, there!" He said in a flirtatious manner, while holding June's hand. This lasted for about a second, till he realized how awkward this was. "I mean, hello! I'm Calvin Rankin. But you can call me Cal. Everybody does." He then directed their attention to his mother. "And this is my mom, Nasya." June shook her hand, afterwards.
Jack shook her hand, next. "Nice to meet you, Mrs. Rankin."
Once the handshaking was done, Nasya decided to clear some things up. "Actually, it's Ehrlich. Ms. Ehrlich. It's my maiden name. Calvin's father and I divorced, a long time ago."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that!" June spoke.
"It's okay. Happened a long time ago. It's nobody's fault." Nasya reassured them.
"You'll have to forgive my mom. She's just being modest. What she really meant to say is that my dad, Ronald Rankin. Is a crackpot scientist; who let his work ruin his family Dynamics. Which inevitably lead to their divorce." Calvin said in a spiteful, sarcastic comment.
"Calvin! That's enough!" His mother stated, with disapproval.
"It's alright. It's none of our business. I have to get ready for work, anyway. Jack, you should be heading to school." June said.
"Oh, well then, Jack! Maybe you and Cal, can walk to school, together. We just moved from New York; hoping to have a fresh start, here, in Jasper. And Calvin's just starting school, today." Nasya said.
"Actually, I don't plan on walking." Jack replied. He walked to his garage, opened the door, revealing his motorcycle. The moment Calvin laid eyes on that blue and pink motorcycle, he was completely enamored by it. Usually, a guy riding a motorcycle with a mix of pink and blue, would look unmanly. But for some reason, it seemed to really work, with this particular motorcycle.
"Whoa, dude! This baby's yours?" Calvin asked him.
"Last time I checked." Jack responded, with sarcasm. He mounted Arcee and put on his motorcycle helmet. When Calvin heard the pur of that engine, come to life; that made him like the bike, even more.
"So, what's her name?" Calvin asked Jack, referring to the motorcycle.
This caught Jack, by surprise. "What?! What do you mean?" Jack was suddenly getting nervous.
"Your bike. What's her name? I'm assuming you gave her a name. Hopefully something, pretty." Calvin clarified.
"Oh, that's what you meant. Well, if you must know. Her name's Arcee. Spelled A.R.C.E.E." Jack told him.
That brought a look of surprise, to Calvin's face. He never heard of a name like that, before. "Huh, I've never heard of that kind of name, before."
"Well, it wasn't exactly a name I chose. It kind of, already came with it. But the more I looked at the bike, the more I realized. That it suits her. In fact, you could say; she's out of this world." Jack said, in reference to his motorcycle. "Anyway, I guess I'll see you at school." Jack and Arcee drove down the road, heading for school. Calvin wasn't far behind. He pulled out a skateboard and skated towards school. While they were gone, that gave June and Nasya, some time to know each other.
"So, June. What kind of work are you in?" Nasya asked her.
"I'm a nurse at the local hospital. You?" June replied, wanting to know her profession, too.
"Me? Well, I've had quite a few jobs, actually. You know, anything to provide for me and my son. I have taken up writing, as a hobby. But, believe it or not. I have thought about volunteering at the hospital, here, in Jasper." Nasya told her.
Elsewhere, Jack and Arcee came to a stoplight, on their way to school. "Jack, don't get me wrong! I'm glad that you've made a new friend. But telling him my name; wasn't the best idea." Arcee informed him.
"Relax, Arcee! It didn't catch on. Besides, he and I just met each other. So, I don't think you can call us friends." Jack reassured her. The light turned green, so they proceeded on their way to school.
Jasper, high School
Everyone sat in class, listening to the teacher's announcement. "Okay, class! I'd like to introduce you all to a new student, attending our school. So, do your best to make him feel welcome! Everyone, I would like to introduce you to Calvin Montgomery Rankin." Calvin walked into the room, immediately after that. As the day went on; for some reason, Calvin seemed to be perfect, at just about everything. Science was easy enough. Art class was no problem. Gym class went by like a breeze; as if it was nothing. When school got out; Jack and Calvin made their way to the parking lot. Jack put his hand on Cal's shoulder, getting his attention.
"Hey, Cal! Can we talk in private, for a minute?" Jack asked him. Cal didn't have a problem with that; so they walked to the alley, behind the school. "Okay Cal, seriously. You were perfect at basically everything, back there. How did you do all of that?"
"That's exactly what I want to know, too." Another voice suddenly said. Jack looked in the direction it came from; seeing that it came from none other than Miko, herself. She also brought Raf with her. Realization dawned on Jack, about something really important.
He walked over to his friends, beginning the introduction. "Oh, right. I didn't get a chance to introduce you to my friends. This is Raf Esquivel, and Miko Nakadai." Jack pointed to both of his friends, in that order, respectively. The moment Cal laid eyes on Miko, he was enamored by her beauty. He even started to blush, a bit. He shook her hand.
But, before he released her hand; he decided to speak his mind, about something. "Hey, girl! Calvin Rankin. But you can call me Cal. Everybody does! Anata wa totemo kireina me o shite imasu. Anata no kami no pinku no iroai wa, oishī ichigo o omoidasa semasu. (You have very pretty eyes. And that shade of pink, in your hair; reminds me of tasty strawberries)." Calvin spoke to her, in Japanese. This shocked, even him. Because he doesn't speak Japanese. Calvin then, released her hand.
"I didn't know you speak Japanese." Miko responded.
"I don't!" Calvin said, with shock.
"Then how'd you know how to say that? And even if you could tell I'm a foreign exchange student, based on my name. How do you know I'm from Japan?" Miko asked him.
"I don't know!" Cal said, in a freaked out manner. The next thing that happened, freaked them all out. Calvin's body began to take on a new form. When it was complete, they saw that he had shapeshifted into Miko. Calvin looked in the nearest reflective surface he could find. He saw his new appearance. "Oh my god! I'm Miko!" He said, with a perfect imitation of her voice. "My voice! I've got her voice, now!"
"You can't be me! Because I'm supposed to be me!" Miko said, in response to all of this. As a result of the still present shock; Calvin's powers went into overdrive. He began shapeshifting into various people; such as his mother, June Darby, then Raf and then Jack. After about, half a minute; Jack had a pretty good idea of what was going on.
"Easy there, Cal! I think I know what's going on. You're a Mutant." This further confused Calvin. He began asking Jack, what he meant. Jack and his friends went into detail about Mutants; about how the X-Gene was an abnormality in their D.N.A. that gave them superpowers. Calvin revealed that he knew all about Mutants. After all, he was from New York. He just didn't think that he'd be one. Jack told him not to worry and that he wasn't alone, in this. When Calvin asked him what he meant; Jack took a leap of faith. "Because I'm just like you." Jack showed him his powers, by shapeshifting into various people; ending with his Mutant form. Jack had blue skin, amber eyes, and wavy red hair, that made him look like a wild man. "I thought I was the only one. But it looks like your a shapeshifter too." This was all a lot for Calvin to take in. But soon enough, the shock faded.
The next thing Jack told him, was to just calm down and to concentrate on the shape he wanted to take, then it would happen. Cal did everything Jack said; and within an instant, he was back to his original form. Now that the hard part was over; Jack repeated his earlier question. "Now, are you finally going to tell us how you were so perfect at everything?"
"I really, don't know. All I know is that whenever I'm standing next to someone; I seem to be able to imitate their skills and knowledge. That's why everything was always so easy for me, even at my last school. I never knew why that was, until now. I don't think I'm just a Mutant or shapeshifter. I think I'm like, a super shapeshifter. I mean, think about it! How else could I imitate someone so perfectly? I must be able to copy everything about them. That's kind of cool!" Calvin exclaimed with excitement, on that last part. After learning all of this new information; Jack made the executive decision that he and Calvin would train together. That way, they could both get a handle on their powers. At the last minute; Calvin decided to use his shapeshifting ability, one more time. He transformed into Miko again; to have a little fun. "Ha-Ha! You know, I could get used to this!" He said, becoming acquainted with his new form; as he fondled the breasts. This did not go unnoticed by Miko. It made her uncomfortable.
"HEY! Cut that out!" Miko shouted to him; grabbing his hands, to make him stop. Calvin changed back, immediately after.
"What?! It's not like I was touching the real you. Just a copy of you." Cal informed her.
"Doesn't matter! It's still my look you stole. And if you ever do that again; you'll keep your hands off it! You get me?!" Miko instructed him, strictly. He abided by her warning; after being on the receiving end of her temper. "Good." She commented.
"You think that's bad, Miko. Earlier today, I caught him flirting with my mom." Jack informed her.
"Dude. Can I help it if your mom's hot? Hey, now that we know I'm a shapeshifter. You think I got a chance with her? I mean, all I would have to do is adjust my age, right?" Calvin replied.
"Don't even think about it!" Jack warned him. Jack changed back to his human form. He and his friends, then began to walk away. Then, right before all of them left; Calvin used his powers, to turn into Miko, one last time. He looked down his shirt; catching a glimpse of the assets, of his new form.
"I saw that!" Miko yelled back to him. This caused Calvin to stop what he was doing; shapeshift back to himself, and follow them.
For the rest of the day; Jack and Calvin got to know each other, a little better. They learned of each other's likes and dislikes. They were getting along, so well; that they were having a montage of fun, with their powers.
The next day
Jack and Calvin continued with their montage. They did things with their powers; such as pulling pranks on Vince, the school bully. They shapeshifted into people; such as Senator Robert Kelly and Jay Jonah Jameson. Making them admit how stupid they were, for slandering the wrong kind of people. Then they shapeshifted into various famous people; and took pictures together. But the one thing Jack didn't realize; was that by spending time with his new friend, he was neglecting his old ones. This made Raf & Miko jealous, that both Jack was hogging his new friend; and that his new friend was hogging him. Jack didn't even come to the Base, during that time. On the other hand; their moms were glad that the two of them hit it off, as friends.
Cal was currently standing outside K.O. Drive-in, waiting for Jack's shift to end. Jack exited the building; with Cal greeting him with a fist bump and a bro handshake. Cal then saw something interesting. "Hey, Jack! Isn't that Sierra? The girl you've been crushing on at school?" Jack directed his attention towards Sierra; talking with her blonde friend. Jack confirmed his question. "Well, maybe now's your chance to see how she feels about you."
"No way! I already get nervous enough, as is; by being in the same presence as her. Besides, I'm like, 90% sure; that if she's noticed me, by now. It's because of my motorcycle. And, there's no way that she would just come out and say she likes me." Jack responded.
This gave Cal an idea. "Well then, why don't you just shapeshift into someone she knows, and ask her what she thinks about you?"
"No. I could never do that." Jack said back.
"Fine then..." Calvin said to him. This resulted in Jack releasing a breath of relief. "I'll do it then." Calvin finished his sentence. Hearing this, made Jack, extremely nervous.
"What? No! You can't do that, either! Spoke Jack.
"Relax! It'll be fine. I promise!" Cal reassured him. Calvin turned into Miko, putting his plan in motion. Before he could proceed, Jack was giving him a questionable look. "What?! I like her." Calvin defended his actions, for choosing that form. He then walked over to Sierra, to gather Intel.
Once he walked away, Arcee chose to speak to Jack, in her vehicle form. "Look, Jack! I know he's a fellow Mutant; and that you two have really hit it off. But I don't think he's the best influence for you." Jack made an attempt at debating with her, on this. But that only made her continue, making her point. "Jack, ever since you started hanging out with him. You've been neglecting Raf & Miko. Your "real" friends." Jack argued that, that wasn't true. He also claimed that Calvin, was his friend. "Jack, you've known him for just two days now. And in that short amount of time; all you two have done, is misuse your powers, in a juvenile manner. That's not very responsible."
That last part; really made Jack think about everything she said. Maybe she was right. "Okay, Arcee! I'll find Raf and Miko; and patch things up with them." Cal came back to Jack, changing back to normal. Jack began asking him for the news he gathered. "So, what's the verdict?"
"Well, there were times when she didn't get your name right. And, I think you were right. I think she only noticed you because of the motorcycle." This brought a look of disappointment to Jack's face. Now, Calvin had a question for Jack. "Hey, Jack! There's something I don't get. I tried using my powers earlier today, when I was alone. And nothing happened. But when I'm standing next to you; somehow, they're working again."
Jack did think, that was a little strange. But he had more important things to attend to at present. Making things right with his friends; felt like a good place to start. "Look, Cal! I had a lot of fun with you in these last two days. But right now, I need to focus on making things right with my friends. And I think I know where they are." Jack put on his motorcycle helmet and mounted Arcee.
This surprised Calvin. "Oh? Well, maybe I can tag along."
Jack thought it over for a moment. "Why not?" He really didn't see the harm in that. In all honesty, he really did want the four of them to be friends.
"Hey, can I drive this baby?" Calvin was referring to Arcee.
"Sorry! She's kind of, temperamental. But I can give you a lift." Jack knew that Arcee, wasn't one for giving people rides. But this time, he was hoping she would make an exception. Calvin hopped on Arcee, behind Jack. They left the parking lot; driving down the road, to their destination.
Meanwhile, on the outskirts of town
Miko, Raf, Bulkhead and Bumblebee were at the outskirts of town. Miko wanted to do some dune bashing with Bulkhead. Raf and Bumblebee, on the other hand; were just with them because they didn't have anything better to do. "Miko, if we have to do this. Are you sure you don't want to invite Jack, to join us?" Bulkhead asked her. She sat in Bulkhead's cockpit, feeling sour about that question.
"Jack's already made up his mind, about which friends, he prefers to hang out with." She said, in a spiteful manner.
Raf was sitting in Bumblebee, across from Miko and Bulkhead. He didn't like what she was implying. "Miko, Jack's not like that. He's our friend. He would never abandon us." He stated.
"Raf's right, Miko. Jack's been with you through thick and thin. And in case you've forgotten, he saved your life on that train. Those MECH agents were gonna kill you, Miko! But Jack stopped them. He saved you." Bulkhead reminded her.
"That was 5 days ago, Bulk. And he's already replaced us with his new "fellow Mutant" best friend. I guess he doesn't have time for us "regular Humans" anymore."
"Ah come on, Miko. You know that's not true. I'm sure Jack's just..." Bulkhead didn't get a chance to finish that sentence.
"Speak of the devil. Here he comes." Miko interrupted, as Jack approached them, riding Arcee. "Oh, and what a surprise. He brought his new friend with him." Miko finished, seeing Calvin, sitting behind Jack. They came to a stop. Jack applied the kickstand; took off his motorcycle helmet, dismounted Arcee and approached his friends.
"Hey, guys! You want some company for whatever it is we're doing?" Jack asked.
Miko got out of Bulkhead; not looking too pleased. "Oh, so now you want to hang out with us? I thought you'd be too busy, playing with your new best friend. Well, news flash! "We're" not doing anything. Me and Raf are doing something. So, why don't you and Cal go do some fun Mutant stuff, somewhere else?" Miko responded; using hand gestures in a manner, to exclude Jack from their party. Jack started to realize just how much he hurt their feelings. But the last thing he wanted, was to be singled out from his friends. So, he had to fix this.
"Look, Miko! I'm sorry, okay?! I didn't know that by spending so much time with Calvin; I would end up hurting you guys. The last thing I wanted to do, was single you guys out." Jack meant every word of that apology.
"Well, you did! So, I guess it's just more fun hanging around other Mutants, for you." Miko retorted. Jack was about to argue with her, more. But suddenly, a crashing sound was heard, off in the distance.
"What was that?" Bulkhead spoke. The Human members of Team Prime widened their eyes with shock because they realized Bulkhead just spoke, while Calvin was still present. "Oops!" Bulkhead followed up. Calvin asked who said that; and the trio would have to come up with an excuse. But before they could; they heard a beastly roar, coming from the crash site. When the dust cleared; they saw the Incredible Hulk. He was in the middle of a fight, with five opponents. Of course, as soon as Miko saw him; she was through the roof, with excitement.
"Dude! That's the Hulk! I can't believe it's really him. What's he doing in Jasper? And I thought he was an Avenger. Where are the rest of them?" Miko exclaimed. It was common knowledge that the Hulk was an Avenger. But as of lately; he seemed to be on leave, from the team. The kids then saw, who the five people he was fighting were. The first was Carl Creel, A.K.A. the Absorbing Man. A man who had the ability to mimic the elements, from anything he touched. The other four were the U-Foes. A super villain parody, of The Fantastic Four.
The U-Foes were a band of people, obsessed with acquiring superpowers. So much so, that they recreated the accident that gave The Fantastic Four their powers. Their roster consisted of; their leader, Simon Utrecht, A.K.A. Vector. He had a V symbol, on his head; and his whole body looked like a nebula of empty space. He had the power of Telekinesis/Psychokinesis; along with the ability of flight, accelerating, blocking, attracting and repelling most forms of energy and matter. The second member was a behemoth, with metal skin. His name was Michael Steel, A.K.A. Ironclad. He had the power of super strength, superhuman durability, and density manipulation. This allowed him to hover in the air; or weigh as much as a mountain. The next, was the only girl, among them. She was Ann Darnell, A.K.A. Vapor. Her whole body was comprised of a green vapor; giving her the power to take on the form of any gas she wanted. Finally, the last one, was a purple, glowing man. This was Vapor's little brother, Jimmy Darnell, A.K.A. X-Ray. His body was made up of living energy, which allowed him to take the form of any energy or radiation.
The Autobots transformed, telling the kids to stay back, for their own safety. Of course, this only managed to freak Calvin out. "Whoa! What the heck are those things?!" Jack was trying to calm him down. But at that moment; Miko was running towards the action, thinking it was cool. "Jack, what are those things?" Calvin asked him, again. Jack didn't have time to explain; since there were more pressing matters, at present.
"Look, Cal! There's no time for that. So I'll explain everything, later. But right now, we've got bigger things to worry about. Like, helping the Hulk." Jack replied. Hearing him say this, brought concern to Arcee. Was he seriously thinking about fighting those guys?
"Jack, you can't be serious. You're still getting used to your powers. And if you're thinking about fighting them. They'll kill you! You're not Strong enough." Arcee informed him.
"Maybe. But if I can save lives, by risking my life. Then isn't it worth the risk? And I'm gonna need your help, Arcee." Jack then directed his attention towards Calvin. "Cal, I know we hardly know each other. And I know we've never done anything like this, before. But I could really use your help too." This made Calvin feel uneasy. He didn't know what was going on and he wasn't ready for this, either.
"What? Jack, are you crazy? Those are super villains, fighting the Hulk. We're surrounded by giant robots. And you want me to help you protect the Hulk?! I couldn't possibly..." Calvin didn't get to finish, before being interrupted, by Jack.
"Calvin, look! I know all of this is weird. And I promise to give you some answers, when this is all over. But my friend's putting herself in danger, again. And if those guys aren't stopped; then a lot of people could get hurt. And I'm not going to let that happen! Now, I can't force you into this. You're free to sit this one out if you want. But in the slightest chance that you're up for it; I could use all the help I could get. So, are you in, or are you out?" Hearing everything he just said, Arcee knew one thing for sure; Jack had the potential to be a great leader. Calvin took a moment to think it over. Things have been really weird for him, recently. First, he finds out he's a Mutant; then he befriends another one. Now, he's confronted by giant transforming robots and other superhumans, in that short amount of time. But Jack had really become a true friend, to him. So, he gave his answer.
"Alright, Jack! You're gonna owe me one heck of an explanation, after this. But, I'll help you."
Jack gave a smile to that. "Alright, then..." Jack transformed into his Mutant form, before finishing that sentence. "Let's give big green a hand!" Bulkhead paused for a second, thinking he meant him. "Not you, Bulk. I meant the other big green." Jack said, pointing at the Hulk. Jack, Calvin, and the Autobots, rushed towards the fight. "Hey Ugly Five!" Jack shouted at the Absorbing Man and the U-Foes, getting their attention. "Didn't anyone ever tell you that ganging up against one, isn't very sporting?" Jack finished. The bad guys weren't just looking at Jack. They saw Calvin and the Autobots, as well. They were wondering who they were.
"And who are you, and this "Motley Crue" supposed to be?" X-Ray asked, in an insulting manner.
"Just some people who don't like bullies. So, how about you guys leave the Hulk alone and go back to wherever it is you came from, before you get hurt?" Jack commented.
"Bring it on, kid!" Absorbing Man shouted.
"Honestly, I was only half hoping you'd say that." Jack responded with pride. Jack released his claws. Coincidentally, at that moment; Calvin's skin turned blue, and he sprouted some bone claws of his own. It was very painful for him, and blood was dripping from his knuckles. Jack witnessed this, with shock. "Hey, that's my power." He and Calvin were both freaked out by this. They were guessing that Calvin wasn't just a fellow shapeshifter. "Whatever! We'll address that, later. Let's just do this, already!" Jack exclaimed, deciding to holster this for another time. They then began the fight. Even with his powers, Jack stood very little chance against the villains. Luckily, the strength of the Autobots and the Hulk, helped out with that. Bulkhead slammed his mace into Ironclad; pinning him against the ground. Bumblebee was fighting Absorbing Man. He thought it was annoying that he couldn't understand a single word Bumblebee was saying, during the fight. Jack and Arcee were fighting Vapor and X-Ray; which was no easy feat, even with Hulk's help.
"ENOUGH!" Vector shouted, in frustration. He used his telekinesis to repel everyone in the area. He heard the sound of a camera. He looked down from the air, to see Miko; getting pictures of the action on her phone. This brought a smile to his face and put an idea in his head. "Ah, perfect! A hostage."
Miko stopped what she was doing, after hearing that. This sent fear rushing through her veins. "UH-OH!" She said, while trying to run away. But Vector grabbed her with his telekinetic powers; levitating her in front of him.
"You really shouldn't rush into battles, little girl. It's no place for children." Vector stated to her.
"MIKO, NO! Let her go, or I'll..." Bulkhead shouted at Vector, charging at him. Vector used his telekinesis on him, freezing him in place.
"You'll what, become more useless against us?" Vector taunted. This only fueled the Hulk with more rage. How dare Vector use an innocent girl as a shield. Hulk leaped at Vector, trying to smash him for what he was doing. But Vector stopped him with his powers too. "Okay, here's how this is going to work. All of you are going to stand down and leave us alone; or this girl's getting shipped back to her parents as paste." Vector warned them. At this moment, Jack was scared. He was trying to think of a way to save Miko, without her getting hurt. Then an idea popped into his head. He laid on the ground and concentrated his powers; till he was the same color as the sand covered ground.
"Hey! Where'd the blue kid go?" Ironclad announced. This caught everyone by surprise. They scouted the area, looking for him. Jack climbed onto a big desert rock, staying down, low. When opportunity presented itself, he jumped off of the rock and grabbed Vector's leg; stabbing his claws, all the way to the other side. This caused Vector, immense pain. Vector dropped everyone he was levitating, as a result. Jack jumped off of Vector and caught Miko, as she fell.
Miko was on top of Jack; with him laying on his back, flat on the ground. "Well, I figured "chameleon", right?!" Jack said to her with sarcasm; gesturing to the fact he blended in to his environment, like a chameleon.
Vector touched the area of his leg, where he was stabbed. Fresh blood was dripping from his fingers. This made him very angry. "You'll pay for that, kid!" He shouted at Jack.
Jack and Miko got to their feet. "Bulkhead, get Miko to safety! We'll finish up, here." Jack told Bulkhead. At that moment; something strange began happening to Calvin. He started feeling pain throughout his body; almost as if it was trying to tear itself apart. Suddenly; his body began mimicking the powers of everyone present. He started flashing between Vapor's gas form, X-Ray's energy form, Ironclad's metal skin and Vector's appearance and powers. Finally, he copied Hulk's gamma power.
"What's happening to me?" Calvin asked, through the pain.
"CALVIN!" Jack shouted, with concern for his friend.
"Somebody, help me!" Calvin shouted. The U-Foes didn't know what was going on and they didn't care, especially X-Ray. He zapped Calvin with all his might. Of course, all this managed to do, was upset Calvin. He retaliated, by mimicking all their powers and attacking them with everything he had. The U-Foes and the Absorbing Man knew they were out matched. So, they made a strategic retreat. Calvin fell to the ground, after that. Once the fight was over; Hulk approached Jack. He seemed to have something to say to him.
"You know, kid. I know someone else who has claws, almost exactly like you. You wouldn't happen to be related, would you?" Hulk asked him.
"I have no idea what you're talking about." Jack replied.
Hulk just shrugged this off. What were the chances that he'd actually be related to Wolverine? Besides, his claws were made of bone, not Adamantium. "Huh, whatever!" Hulk said, without a care. At that moment, Calvin let out a surge of power that hit the Hulk. It was so strong, that it reverted him back to Bruce Banner. Everyone was weirded out by that sight. Raf immediately rushed over to check on Calvin, at that moment.
"Who are you?" Jack asked Bruce.
"My name is Dr. Bruce Banner." He replied.
"Bruce who?" Miko commented.
"Wait. Bruce Banner? As in, "THE" Bruce Banner?" Raf exclaimed, with excitement. Of course, this only further confused his friends.
"I'm with Miko, on this one, Raf. Who's Bruce Banner?" Jack asked his young friend.
"You guys seriously don't know who Bruce Banner is?" Raf responded. When they were still silent; he took that as their answer. So, he began to elaborate. "He's only the foremost expert on all things, gamma related." This surprised everyone that Raf, actually knew all of that. "What? I read the tabloids. And I pay attention to the scientific community." He informed them.
"Well, whatever the case is; we've got to take him and Calvin back to base." Jack announced. This didn't seem to fly with the Autobots. They had some reservations against this.
"Whoa, Jack! We can't just take them to the base. We're supposed to be a secret. And this won't bode well with Optimus or Agent Fowler." Arcee reminded him. Jack was aware of this, but Calvin and Banner were hurt and he wasn't just going to ignore that.
"I know that, Arcee! But I'm not just gonna leave them out here or drop them off at the hospital. They need medical attention. And regular doctors aren't going to know how to help them. But if we take them to the base, maybe Ratchet and Raf can study their conditions and find a way to help them. Don't worry about Optimus! I'll take full responsibility. Arcee, please!" Jack said to her. She looked down at him, seeing the concern for others in his eyes. Maybe he was right. They did need help and maybe they were the only ones who could do it. So, she put her finger to her comm, before speaking.
"Ratchet, we're gonna need a Bridge. And prepare sick bay." This brought a smile to Jack's face. The Ground Bridge opened a few seconds, after that.
But before they walked through; Raf had something to say to Jack. "Jack. I don't think Calvin's a shapeshifter. I think he's a mimic. I mean, that would explain how he was able to duplicate all their powers."
"Well, that sounds reasonable, Raf. But we'll worry about that, back at base." Jack responded. He picked Calvin up, over his shoulder; while Bulkhead carried Banner through the portal.
Autobot Base
It had been almost an hour since their encounter with those villains. During that time; Bruce Banner and Calvin had been filled in on everything regarding the Autobots and the Decepticons. Bruce was feeling much better. He recovered a while ago and got some proper clothes to wear too. He was currently working with Raf on his laptop, in the human area. All things considered, they seemed to be getting along, really well. They both had an obvious shared love of science. Raf was still finding it hard to believe that Bruce Banner, one of his scientific idols, was really the Hulk. But he was more concerned with his well-being, considering that he just got blasted with living energy, which incapacitated the Hulk. "Umm, Dr. Banner. Are you sure you're alright? I mean, you took a serious blast from X-Ray's power, that our friend mimicked." Raf asked, out of concern.
This warmed Bruce's heart, to hear that someone was actually concerned about him; in spite of the fact that he was the Hulk. He gave a smile to the young man, before speaking. "Don't worry, Rafael! As the Hulk, I've had tougher scrapes than this. Besides, it'll take more than X-Ray or your friend, shooting me with negative gamma rays, reverting me back to human form, to finish me off." After seeing a few stares and a moment of silence, from Raf; Bruce could just tell, that he had something he wanted to ask him. "Okay, Raf! I can tell by that long pause, that you've got something you want to ask me. So, go ahead! I'm an open book."
Raf felt a little nervous; he was talking to one of his idols, after all. "Well, it's just... I was just wondering... If you and the Hulk are the same person, then how are you two so...?" Raf was trying to find the words to end his sentence.
"How are we so different?" Bruce finished his question. Raf gave a simple nod as a response. So Bruce went into detail, on how he became the Hulk and how some psychological instabilities, resulted in the Hulk becoming a personality, all on its own. Raf was blown away with all this new information he gathered. Hearing that the gamma bomb explosion caused his transformation into the Hulk. Anger being the source of the Hulk's transformation and power. Also, that as a result, he's been hunted by the military for who knows how long. This man has really been through a lot.
"I still can't believe that you're the Hulk, Dr. Banner. I mean, I read all your research on gamma radiation and it was really inspiring for me." Raf said, with enthusiasm.
"Well thank you, Raf! That means a lot; and you can call me Bruce. And you're not alone in the whole, disbelief department. I already know that aliens exist. But I had no idea that they also came in the form of sentient robotic organisms, such as your friends, here." Bruce responded. These Cybertronians were amazing. Of course, Agent Fowler swore him to secrecy, on behalf of the U.S. government. He was also surprised to meet The fugitive scientist, who's been hunted by the government, for years. But since he was an Avenger and helped them out, he made the executive decision to give him the benefit of the doubt. Bruce & Raf continued to nerd out with other scientific topics.
This lasted for about a minute, until a certain obnoxious voice interrupted them. "Hey! If you two are done geeking out, maybe you can hurry up with those results; before I have to keep listening to these two." Miko said, gesturing to Jack and Calvin.
"Hey, stop copying me!" Jack told Calvin, as he repeatedly mimicked Jack's claws and animal senses.
"Hey, you're a mimic of sorts, too. So, you stop copying me!" Calvin replied. Calvin was still trying to wrap his head around this whole crazy day. He also couldn't believe that aliens were real and that Jack didn't tell him. Especially since, his motorcycle was one of them.
"For Primus sake! Will you two please give out those results; so these two will stop bickering?" Ratchet complained.
"Okay, okay! Just give us a minute! The process is almost complete." Bruce informed them, while they were waiting for the computer to finish the test results. Shortly after arriving back at base, they decided to run tests on Calvin's D.N.A. to determine the extent of his abilities. Bruce Banner was basically an expert on D.N.A. But the X-Gene was still a foreign science to him. Luckily, he's heard of Mutant experts, such as Charles Xavier and Hank McCoy; doing extensive research on the subject. So he decided to brush up on their thesis of the X-Gene. Soon, the computer finished the results; Bruce and Raf observed the microscope, for further analysis. This brought a look of surprise to their faces. Bruce decided to address the group. "Guys, we have two sets of news. But it's not exactly good or bad. It's more like, big news and little news. So, which do you want first?" Bruce asked them.
"Give us the little news, first!" Arcee suggested.
"Well, Calvin's not a shapeshifter. He's actually a mimic; and quite a powerful one." Bruce informed them. This brought a small feeling of relief to Jack. At least now, they knew they didn't have the same powers.
"Huh, that actually makes sense, in a way. I mean, other than the fact he copied all the abilities of the U-Foes. You guys did say, that he told you how he was always able to mimic the skills and knowledge of anyone he was standing next to. And, he told you he only seemed to have the same power as Jack; while standing within the same distance as him." Bulkhead reminded them.
"Alright, then what's the big news?" Arcee asked.
Raf gave a puzzling look, before speaking. "Well... Turns out, Calvin's not really a Mutant."
"WHAT?" Jack, Miko and Calvin said at the same time, with surprise clearly evident, in their voices. "Guys, are you sure?" Jack asked Bruce and Raf.
"Thoroughly, so. We did a deep dive scan into his D.N.A. But he doesn't seem to possess the X-Gene. However, we did find what we believe to be the source of his powers. It seems that there's some sort of unique chemical residue, in his blood. You know, kind of like a mutagen. Basically, it's no different from how most of the non-Mutants, or as I like to call them, "Mutates", acquire their powers." Bruce confirmed.
"So, he's not a Mutant? Well, that's still kinda cool, I guess. But it would be even cooler if he was a Mutant." Miko said, with a mix between boredom and excitement.
"But, that can't be! I've got to be a Mutant. It's the only explanation I can think of." Calvin exclaimed, with skepticism.
"I'm sorry, Calvin! But that's not what our scans say." Bruce told him. After a brief moment of pause; a certain question appeared in Bruce's mind. One that he just had to ask Calvin about. "Calvin, think! Was there ever a time when you were exposed to a chemical agent, of any kind?"
Calvin thought long and hard about that question. "Well, there was this one time, I stumbled into my father's lab, during an experiment." Calvin said. He then went into further detail. When he was a kid, he came into his dad's lab; after he specifically told him not to. But his curiosity got the best of him; he accidentally knocked over a beaker of chemicals, forming a gas cloud around him. But in spite of that; it didn't make him feel sick. He thought he was fine. But after that event; he started mimicking the people around him. Calvin didn't understand it; but he thought the gas could have had something to do with it. That is, until Jack recently pitched the idea that he could have been a Mutant. But now, he was back to his old theory, that the gas could have been the cause of it, instead.
"Well, I guess that explains it then." Bruce spoke. "It seems that your powers mimic Mutant abilities; giving off the appearance of the X-Gene. But there's more." Bruce finished his sentence; allowing Raf to take it from there.
"It appears that after standing next to someone, you'll acquire their powers and be able to keep them, when you're within half a mile of them. But distancing yourself too far from them, will cause you to lose them. However, we theorize that prolonged contact with someone, may cause it to last longer. Or maybe even, permanently."
"Well, I guess that explains a lot." Arcee commented.
But all this new information, only made Calvin angry, for some reason. "Great! So basically, what you're telling me is that there's nothing special about me, at least, not naturally. I can't believe this. I finally find a friend who's just like me, only to find out, we're nothing alike!"
"Calvin, calm down!" Arcee told him.
"Don't tell me to calm down! It's bad enough that I got an overdose of power, that almost killed me today. But it turns out; I've got nothing in common with anyone here, except with that Banner guy. And then I meet you alien robot freaks!" Calvin snapped at them. To say hearing that rubbed Miko the wrong way, would be an understatement. How dare he speak to her friends that way.
"Hey! That's uncalled for, you jerk!" Miko retorted.
"You know what, I'm so done with this. Open up that alien portal of yours and send me home, now!" Calvin shouted. Fortunately for him, Ratchet didn't want him here, anyway. So his words only sped things up, as he opened the Ground Bridge, for him to leave. As he approached the portal; Jack stopped him at the last minute. He was trying to reason with him.
"Hey, Cal! Why are you acting like this? We're just trying to help you; and my friends have done nothing wrong to deserve your wrath. So, why are you doing this?" Jack asked him.
"Oh, don't act all chummy with me, Jack! It's bad enough that my lunatic dad inadvertently made me like this. But now, I know that I'm not even good enough to hang out with freaks like you guys." Calvin shot back, with spite.
That was the last straw for Jack. "You know what, Cal? Who needs you?! There's the Ground Bridge, don't let it unnerve you on the way through!" Jack fought back, by telling him to hit the road. Talking about him that way is one thing. But no one talks about his friends like that, ever!
After feeling both rejection and seeing the fire in Jack's soul. Calvin came to realize that he may have made a mistake. At the last minute; Calvin grabbed onto Jack's shoulder as he began to walk away. He made an attempt to apologize. He began saying that Jack was better than all of this and that he should leave this alien stuff behind. He should leave, with him. If this was Cal, trying to apologize; he was doing a real dirty job at it.
"You know, Cal. You're not worth it!" Jack replied, brushing his hand off his shoulder. Calvin didn't understand where he was going with this, so Jack elaborated. "You think just because we both have powers; that means I can only hang out with people like you? You know something, Cal. You're a terrible friend. You've spent your life mimicking others. But you think for anyone to be cool, in any capacity, that they should be like you. Arcee tried telling me that you were a bad influence and that by hanging out with you, I was neglecting my real friends. And you know what, she was right! Now that we've got that settled, it's time for you to leave. And remember, the Autobots are a government secret; so you can't tell anyone. Not that they'd believe you, anyway." Jack started to walk away. After everything he said, Calvin started to realize he was right. This caused him to think about having a change of heart.
Calvin stopped Jack, in his tracks, once again. He gave him another apology, a real one, this time. He told him that he was right and that because of how different he was from others, growing up, he didn't really have any friends. So now, with the right change of attitude; was his chance to change all of that. Jack thought it over, for a minute; with the feeling of open-mindedness. So he came to the decision; that if he was serious about what he was saying, then Jack wasn't the only one he should apologize to. "Alright, Cal! I, accept your apology. But if you're serious about what you're saying; then you have to apologize to my friends too. Starting with Arcee." Jack drove a hard bargain. But Calvin knew, that if he wanted friends and forgiveness; that this was the price he had to pay. So, he apologized to everyone, starting with Arcee, which she accepted. Soon enough, after mending fences with everyone; he became fast friends with Team Prime and Bruce Banner. Of course, now that he was a member of the team, he was sworn to secrecy. He started thinking that wasn't so bad, all things considered; as long as that meant he could keep hanging out with his new friend, Jack. And of course, Miko, the girl he now had a crush on.
Darby Residence
As the day was coming to an end; Jack and Arcee made their way home, parking in the garage. "You know Arcee, I'm beginning to wonder if I'll ever meet any fellow Mutants. Now, don't get me wrong! I'm not looking to out myself as a Mutant, anytime soon. But I think it'd be nice to have someone to talk to; who actually understands what I'm going through."
Arcee hung on every word he said, responding with the utmost sincerity. "I'm sure one day you will, Jack. And, who knows? Maybe one day, you'll find yourself a good teacher who can help you learn to use your powers, properly."
Jack thought long and hard about what she said. He then raised his right fist to his face, released his bone claws, taking a good, long look at them. "Well, I hope you're right, Arcee. You know, it's kinda funny. The only other Mutant I've heard of, who more or less, has claws like mine, is Wolverine. And I really admire and respect him. In spite of what the M.R.D. and other government agencies think of him, he and the X-Men always stand up for what's right, to help people in need, whether they be Mutant or Human. So maybe if we ever meet, I'll just ask him to be my teacher." Said Jack.
"Jack?" He heard a voice say. His facial expression was filled with surprise; he turned around and put his hand behind his back, seeing his mom at the garage entrance. "Who were you talking to? And what were you saying about a teacher?" She asked him. Behind his back; Jack retracted his claws back into his hand, before thinking of the perfect excuse.
"Oh, mom. Well, I was, umm, just on the phone, talking to my friends about how I could really use a tutor in most subjects for school." He said with nervousness, clearly in his voice. He was just hoping she would buy his excuse because he wasn't ready to tell her the truth yet, especially the part about him being a Mutant.
"Oh, well that's good, I guess. So, how was your day with your new friend, Calvin?" June asked him.
"Umm, very eventful. But hopefully, next time we hang out, it won't be, as much." He replied.
"Well, okay then. Go get cleaned up and ready for bed!" June told him. A few hours later, Jack was fast asleep in his bed. June was peeking into his bedroom, from the hallway, watching him sleep. She had shifted back to her true form, thinking about how much she wished she could tell him the truth. "Oh, James! I wish you two could have met each other. I wish you could remember. This could have been our life, together. This could have been our house and the three of us could have been a family, together." She voiced to the memory of James Howlett, her one true love. "You would have loved him. And he would have loved you." She said, finishing her sentence. After that; she went back to her room; and went to sleep, herself.
A/N: Sorry it took me so long to update, but this chapter took me weeks to finish. And in case some of you were wondering; I decided to slightly mix Calvin Rankin of Earth 616 with his counterpart from the X-Men Evolution comics. So he has the appearance and origin story of Calvin Rankin 616, but the wardrobe and family dynamics of his Evolution version. And I don't know what his mother's career was in the Evolution comics; so I tried to make it up as I went along. The Mimic was one of my favorite X-Men characters, and I'm hoping that in this story he and Jack become good friends. I'm also hoping to pair him up with Miko.
Don't worry though; I do plan on giving Jack a love interest, but I haven't got that far yet, I'm waiting to reach a certain episode, first. And I'll do my best to make it worthwhile. I'm going to try hard and update one of my other stories before Valentine's Day. It will be hard, but I'll give it a go. You guys know the drill, if there are any sloppy bits in this chapter, I'll edit them out later. I would also like to thank all my fans and fellow writers, for their support. By the way; I don't know if Mystique can use her powers for camouflage. So about that scene I wrote in the desert, where Jack blended in with the sand to attack Vector. If none of you liked it, then I won't do it again. Mostly, because I'm trying to keep the powers of the characters as accurate as possible. You have my word.
By the way; in case some of you were wondering, I chose to use the appearance of the U-FOES from "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes." I just thought it'd be cooler. And I chose to use the X-Ray from other media, because honestly, the version of him from that cartoon sucked. And, I decided to use the smarter version of The Hulk, rather than the out of control rage monster version.
In case I don't update any of my other stories in time, then Happy Valentine's day!
