"How much further?" Chief asked Cortana, as he continued his tack through the wilderness.
It had been a couple of days since she and the Chief had arrived here, and for those last couple of days, they had been trying to pin down the whereabouts of this Clan that the Historian recommended that they contact; for the most part this task had been proving difficult.
A fact that was becoming all the more urgent by the messages he had been getting back from Leo, as other Clans were now looking for the Chief. So, he needed to find Clan Spar soon before he was forced back to deal with the growing issues on his part of the moon.
"We should be in the new search area any moment now," Cortana replied.
But even as she said this, Cortana was forced to admit that she was losing hope of locating Clan Spar.
As the Clan had been constantly moving their camp for some unknown reason. But then again, given some of the interesting, imported wildlife they had run into, this was understandable.
Even so, the information that the Historian contacts had managed to dig up suggested that Clan Spar and those who had joined them were currently operating on the extreme Southern Hemisphere of the planet, avoiding most of the major population centers.
They could only guess why this was, as John continued to move about in the wildness in a classic search pattern.
"John, there's a river just up ahead, it might be worth checking out," Cortana commented.
As they both knew that they needed to top up their water supplies.
Besides, it was the only real landmark in this area, other than miles of rolling hills around them.
So it was worth going there even if it was only to top up their water supplies. As even with MJOLNIR's water recycling systems there were only so many times that it could reuse the same water before it became an issue.
Seeing no reason to argue with Cortana's suggestion, John quickly made his way over to the waypoint that Cortana had placed on his HUD.
But just as they then crested the ridge of one of the many hills in the area, Chief could see the river and the riverbank opposing him the flash of metal catching sunlight.
Immediately picking up on this, John then activated the helmet's zoom, which gave him an outline of what he quickly identified as a human female in Mandalorian armour currently engaged in some activity that he couldn't make out at this distance.
Even so, this was a major break for John as he had Cortana had spent days tracking around the wilderness without seeing so much as a soul. So, to finally catch sight of someone who could possibly lead them to their target came as a relief to the Chief.
But still, John knew that he had to approach her carefully, as he couldn't afford to provoke a confrontation. And the Spartan knew that a six to seven feet super soldier tended to put people on the defensive.
So, he needed Cortana's help in trying to approach this person in a way that avoided this obvious problem.
"Cortana?" John asked simply, trusting she would understand what he was asking.
As she would have a better idea of what he was looking for, Chief was not exactly the kind of person to go up to an armed person and start asking questions. For he knew that was a good way of getting shot.
And considering most of his usual ways of getting information were not available to him, John would have to rely on his AI companion.
As talking was not his strong suit unless it was on certain subjects and with certain individuals.
But otherwise, Chief was rather clueless as to how he should approach this situation.
"She seems nice; maybe you can ask the fine lady if she knows where you can find Clan Spar," Cortana suggested, to which some of the more subtle implications when completely over the Spartans' head.
Even so, his response was the same as anyone else in that situation, for he met her with a cold silence.
Seeming to know that she had gone a little too far in her joke, Cortana realized this, as she got a little more serious in her response.
"Then again, that might not be the best way of handling things...," Cortana finally admitted.
"Any ideas to how I-?" But before John could finish his sentence, he then heard the sound of water moving quickly, and he then spotted something moving down the river.
Moments later a large red dot appeared on the edge of his motion sensor, as Chief then spun to face the source of this movement and was surprised at what he saw.
The creature that John now saw rising from the river looked closely related to a snake, but it also seemed to have some elements of an eel with scales and what looked like fans on the sides of its body.
"Cortana?" John called out to her as he aimed his weapon.
"That's one of Mandalorians' local predators that was imported back. A Fanned Rawl, or at least a sub-species, as there's no record of them growing that big." Cortana gave him a quick rundown of what he was looking at.
As the beast seemed more interested in the figure at the side of the river, rather than the Chief who was further away from the river. Seeming to realize that she was now the object of the predator's attention, the female Mandalorian immediately drew her weapon.
"Di'kut!" The woman then cursed as she then opened up on the eel with a holdout blaster pistol.
This of course immediately drew the Rawl's full attention to her, at which point John realized that the female Mandalorian wasn't going to be able to get clear in time.
Seeing this, John grabbed his rifle and immediately sent a couple of rounds down range.
Which probably saved the Mandalorians' life, as a couple of rounds from his assault rifle then grazed Rawl's eye and face.
Making it forget the Mandalorian on the riverbank as it then turned to face what the beast considered to be its biggest threat.
Something that John was more than willing to reinforce as he continued to fire on the beast, making sure to keep to short bursts while moving, trying his best to balance, movement, and accuracy all the while limiting ammo expenditure.
Even so, John knew that if things didn't change quickly then he could lose his only possible lead to Clan Spar.
With that in mind, John immediately started moving towards the river eel, hoping to keep its full attention on him so that the Mandalorian on the other side of the river could get clear and hopefully help him.
This seemed to be the case, as they quickly took the opportunity that the Spartan had made for them and raced over to where they had placed some supplies.
Unable to see what it was they were trying to get, John continued leading supporting fire. Fully trusting that whatever it was they were going for would change the situation.
Which seemed to be the case, as the Spartan then caught sight of a flash of metal in their hand out of the corner of his eye.
"Cortana!" John called out to her just as he dove out of the way of a tail strike from the Rawl.
"From the brief moment I had it in the frame, I would have to guess it's part of a jetpack rocket launcher," Cortana informed him, just as the Mandalorian placed the metal cylinder into their jetpack confirming the AI's hypothesis.
Knowing that she would need his help to bring the Rawl into position, John then put away his rifle and started running in a direction that would force the overgrown eel to either chase him or turn its attention back to its original target.
Needless to say, whatever choice it made the Rawl would open itself up to a rocket attack.
Still, it didn't take the Rawl very long to realize that it couldn't catch the Spartan, knowing this it turned its attention back to its original victim.
But by then, they had already sent the rocket its way.
Immediately realizing the threat, the Rawl attempt to move itself out of the way of the rocket, but it was already too late, as the projectile slammed into the beast!
As the beast let out a cry pained! As the rocket then stripped it of some of its protective scales but did no real damage to the beast.
Still, it did open up an opportunity; an opportunity that John immediately exploited, as he sprinted forward and leaped onto the beast's back!
The weight of his impact immediately had an effect, as the eel-like creature buckled under the weight that its body suddenly had to support. Thus, allowing the Master Chief a moment to gain his footing on the predator's body, as he then started spiriting towards the eel's head.
Seeming to know what the Chief was planning to do, the Rawl started to turn its body to force him off, but by then it was already too late.
As John had already leaped from the Rawls' back, as moments later two spheres left his hands and went straight into the beast's mouth just as he landed on the riverbank that the strange was on. For a moment it seemed like they were both going to be forced to resort to other weapons.
That was until the frag detonated!
But somehow that didn't kill the beast, but considering its now ruined face, death wasn't far away for this apex predator. Seeming to realize this itself, the Fanned Rawl let out one last pained roar as it then retreated into the river from which it came, a trail of blood flowing in its wake.
Thus, leaving John alone with the mysterious Mandalorian he had spotted earlier.
For a moment neither one of them said anything to one other, as they simply acknowledged one another with a simple nod and moved away from the river.
"Thank you for your assistance, aruetii." The woman said once she got a good look at the Chief.
As she could immediately tell that he wasn't a Mandalorian, well at least not one she normally saw on her trips to the home sector. As such, she was a little uncertain as to his intentions regarding her.
"No problem," Chief said simply, as he scanned the area in case the Rawl decided that it wanted to go one last round before the end.
"If that's everything, I must depart." The female Mandalorian said, but before she could start walking away the green giant spoke up.
"I'm looking for Clan Spar, have you seen them in this area?" The Chief said simply cut to the chase, as he did not see any reason to beat around the bush.
As he did not want to waste their time, especially if the person in front of him knew nothing of Clan Spar. The fact that John had asked this in the bluntest way possible was a silent way that his frustration was manifesting itself.
A rare thing to happen, but it did happen to everyone at some point. Even so, John did try to make sure that he did not offend her, as he knew that she would not give him what he needed.
Still, this seemed to be the case, as she didn't reply right away.
"Well, this is awkward," Cortana said in the private of John's helmet to break the tension.
"What do you suggest I do then?" The Chief then asked.
As he was at a loss for what he should say. But thankfully Chief didn't need to thread his way through that social minefield as he finally got a response back.
"Who is asking for Clan Spar?" The woman then asked him after he long pauses.
Because depending on who it was it might affect the answer, she gave the Spartan.
"The Master Chief," John stated simply.
To which the Mandalorian seemed to study him for a moment, trying to see if there was anything more.
But upon realizing that he wasn't going to send anything else, she then removed her helmet so he could look him straight in the face while also gauging his reaction.
As the Chief had been expecting a human face when Akara took off her helmet. But no, instead the helmet revealed to be red skin, red-haired humanoid with horns that seemed to be some off-shot of humanity that had taken a slightly different evolutionary path.
Still, the Chief had known of humanoids in this galaxy, but this was his first-time meeting one face to face. Other than when he had 'met' the two kids he was now looking after.
Still, the Spartan had suspected that he had talked to some before, but on Concordia, everyone wore a helmet so you couldn't tell, that and he had rescued some from the Talon, but they hadn't spoken to him personally.
Even so, John could feel his hand slowly making its way to the pistol on his hip as old habits started to take over.
"Easy their cowboy," Cortana said, as she tried to keep John on his leash.
Because he hadn't been expecting this sudden revelation of what he had assumed would be a human woman. This was just an unpleasant fact that John was still coming to terms with this galaxy. As back in his native milky way galaxy, John knew that most life outside of UEG space was nonhuman. And when they were, usually pointing a weapon at him.
So, this was a strange experience, even more so when he had first met the Arbiter: Thel Vadam on Earth during the closing days of the war.
But considering that he had managed to come to terms with that, the Chief knew that he could come to deal with this. Even so, he did expect it to take a while for him to get used to this new reality he was in, as Zabrak then spoke.
"I am Akara, why is it that you seek out Clan Spar; Master Chief?" There was a hint of challenge in her voice as Akara asked this.
To John match, as he then stated why he was looking for her Clan.
"I seek the aid of the Clan," Chief stated bluntly.
As he didn't see any reason to beat around the bush with his request. Still, he couldn't tell what Akara thought about his request, even though he could tell that she was interested in what form that aid might be.
Besides Akara did at least own the Chief the courtesy of hearing him out, especially considering the help he had given her against the Rawl that had attacked her earlier.
"Why do you wish for the aid of Clan Spar?" Akara then asked the Chief, as she seemed to be weary of what it might be.
Seeing what he would have to do, Chief decided that he would have to show her his hand, so he started to explain his situation to her, to which Akara listen quietly as John explained the situation, he currently found himself in. She did not say anything, and for his, part Chief kept it as brief and focused as possible.
As Akara struck him as the type that did not like people wasting their time.
Still, once he was done speaking the Zabrak did not say anything for a minute or two, most likely weighing her options. But in the end, she made her decision, though it was not exactly the one the Chief had been hoping for.
"We will speak more of your request at the Clan camp." Akara then stated, as she then put on her helmet and started making her way back to the riverbank to recover her things.
John fell in behind the Zabrak woman, all the while wondering just what the hell, he had gotten himself into.
The two of them had been travelling for over an hour now when John finally caught sight of the camp.
It was organized if lacking in any real defences.
But then again from its layout, it told him that this camp was made to be moved quickly.
Which the camp goes were already starting to do, and at the pace they were going John suspected that they would be ready to go in a couple of hours. As there were already Mandalorians packing up the last of their temporary shelters, only stopping when he and, passed by.
"Easy John, they're just curious." Cortana tried her best to reassure him.
Even so, John could not help but feel a little on edge. As he was currently in the middle of an unknown camp with people and aliens that John didn't necessarily trust but considering that he was a guest of the Clan leader he knew that he did not have to worry too much.
Still, John could not help but feel uneasy because of all the attention he was getting from the residents of Clan Spar.
"Something bothering you?" Akara then asked, breaking Chief out of his thoughts.
For a moment John then weighed his options, but quickly decided that if Akara was this observant then there would be no point in trying to cover up his obvious discomfort if it had leaked through his usual neutral body language.
"The attention," Chief didn't say anything more than that.
As it was rather self-explanatory considering the looks he was getting.
"It's to be expected, as Clan Spar plays host to many Mando'ade and those who would join us in our hunts," Akara explained to him.
As it was practically the only way that most Clans would keep themselves afloat in the Mandalorian sector nowadays. Especially considering that New Mandalorian economic policies favoured the Republic and those aligned with the new government more than the local population that was majority outside of the New Mandalorian control.
Akara knew that this could only end one way. And the rumours she was hearing from the moon and across the sector itself were proof enough of that.
As such, she intended to be ready should those rumours turn out to be more than that.
"How often are you on world?" John then asked, changing the subject.
Because he wanted to know how often he might get a chance to make contact with them in the future.
"Rarely, we mostly come here to rally recruits." Akara didn't offer anything more than that.
Which was fine, as John didn't ask for more anyway, still it was about now that they reached what he assumed was the main building in this camp. Currently standing in front of this building stood what Chief thought he recognized as a Tandoshan standing just outside of its main entrance.
As the lizard glaring at him with two piercing red eyes was heavily built, armed with two large blades on his back and seemed to be distrustful of the stranger walking beside Akara. For she didn't even get a chance to introduce Spartan to the green Tandoshan before he spoke up.
"Who is this aruetiise?" The man-like lizard asked in his language.
Which made John glad that he managed to convince Wamoshoool to not accompany him on this excursion. As John knew that the two aliens would be at one another's throats about now given the species' history with one another.
"A, Mando'ade who seeks a judge," Chief felt very awkward saying this.
But considering where he was, it was best to keep with the story that he had given Akara.
"Is this true?" The Trando then turned to Akara for confirmation of the Spartans' claim.
To which Akara nodded.
"The Clans seek to force him onto theirs." There was a hint of disguise as Akara said this.
As this fact rubbed her the wrong way.
There was also the fact that whoever was behind this had forced another Clan to do their dirty work for them, this act alone showed that whoever was behind this didn't have the honour to openly challenge their opponents, and as such was unworthy of the respect of all true Mandalorians.
"In what way are they doing this?" The green-scaled lizard man asked his alor.
"They sent another Clan to test him beforehand. Others are likely to follow, as they have yet to show themselves." Akara explained.
The Trando let out a reptilian hissing sound that signalled his displeasure upon hearing what Akara had said.
"This must be dealt with." The cold fury touched the lizard man's voice. "As this can't be allowed to continue!"
At which point Chief turned his helmet, making it clear that he was looking at her. To which Akara responded.
"Agreed, for this is not the way of the Mando'ade to do such things," Akara confirmed to her second in command.
"Well, isn't this interesting?" Cortana commented as the two Mando'ade continued to speak about Chief's current situation.
"What is it?" John asked her in the privacy of his helmet.
"Oh, nothing other than confirmed a little theory of mine," Cortana said, sounding rather happy that this was the case.
"Care to fill me in?" He then asked her.
"Of course, but that depends on where you should say anything," Cortana informed him, as Chief then took the hint.
As she wanted him to get back to his conversation with Akara and the Trando. Even if he was not exactly sure just what he was getting himself into, still John knew that he needed their support in what was to come.
Knowing this, John waited until there was a pause in the conversation before, he insisted himself back into it. And considering what they were currently talking about, Chief used one of the tricks that Cortana had taught him to be able to get back into a conversation.
"I was unaware of that. Why is this such a problem?" John then asked, even though he knew it would get some kind of reaction from the two Mandalorians present.
To which he was right, as they both turned to look at him as if he had grown a second head. But they then seemed to realize that the Chief was pretty much out of his element and that whoever had sent him here was either:
A. Sending him on a wild Bantha chase to waste his time.
Or B. He was sent here by someone who knew that Clan Spar might be his only hope for fighting his way out of the hole he found himself trapped in.
Either way the fact that he had managed to locate them was proof enough that it was most likely option B was most likely the case.
As from what Akara had seen, she knew that Chief was a great fighter, but a poor Mando'ade and considering the state of the culture as a whole this wasn't at all surprising.
Knowing this Akara knew that she would have to do her duty as a leader of Clan Spar, but before she could speak her Clan-mate spoke before her.
"For it goes against what we Mandalorian believe in." The Trando explained.
"In what way?" John then inquired, giving the opening Akara needed.
"As we follow the old ways, not the current ways of this dar'manda that claim to be Mando'ade. Despite what you have been told, this is not the way." Akare then stated.
"I was unaware that more than one way to be Mandalorian," Chief said to which the lizard man snorted before he replied.
"There isn't, but it isn't surprising, for many have strayed further from the Resol'nare. Their actions against you are proof enough of this." The Tando explained.
To which Chief paused for a moment, as he hadn't heard of this Resol'nare before. But considering how important it seemed, Chief knew that it was something that he should probably learn about, even if he risked seeming a bit ignorant about his claims.
Ironically, this helped them, as it made him look like someone who had joined but had no idea what he was doing. Especially considering the current state of the Mandalorian Clans.
"I wasn't aware of it when I decided to become Mandalorian," Chief said, even if this was not the truth.
But given the circumstances, it was safer to say this than to contradict his earlier statements. Still, this didn't seem to matter, as the Trando spoke up.
"Many claim such things. To wear our armour is one thing, to live by the Resol'nare is another." The lizard man explained.
"Then explain it to me." Chief made it sound like a challenge.
And in a way, it was, for they claimed to know the true way to live as a Mandalorian. So, the Chief wanted to hear their version of it.
To which the Trando snorted, but before he could open his mouth Akara stepped in.
As she could see that her second in command was starting to get a little worked up over Chief's rather, blunt matter while seeming to know nothing about the culture claimed to be a part of was frustrating the Tandoshan.
So, it was probably best that she handled this next part. Before her vod decided that he needed to show the Chief how Mando'ade settled grievances between one another.
"The Resol'nare is the code in which all Mando'ade are to six tenets, which are guidelines on how a Mandalorians is to live their life. But many have strayed from the true ways of the old Mando'ade." Akara explained.
"In which ways?" John then asked, all the while Cortana silence recorded this whole interaction.
As she already knew this would be important information for them to have in the future. Still, it was a surprise to both of them, when Trandoshan then spoke up.
"The Clans of Mandalore once welcomed all that would walk beside their gods. But after the tsad droten, and their dar'manda allies came, the Clans have lost their ways." The lizard man then explained to him.
At which time the Chief then decided that he had to know the name of the Trandoshan standing before him. As it was becoming obvious that he needed to earn his respect alongside that of Akara if there was any chance of them working with one another in the future.
"I still haven't gotten a name from you. So, what are you called?" John inquired of the Trandoshan.
"I have had two names, aruetii, but you may call me by my new name. For I am Kosk of Clan Spar," Kosk said, as he identified himself to the Chief.
To which John nodded in respect, it was the only thing that he could do. As he wasn't entirely aware of what else he could do exactly.
For he was still an outsider to the Mandalorian culture and as such stuck with what he knew would be taken as a sign of respect.
"Master Chief," John stated simply.
To which Kosk replied with a nod of his own.
"Still to hear of what the Clans have done regarding you," Kosk then let out an angry snarl before he continued speaking, "This only shows that True Mandalorians' work was only half done. Fett's work was half done." Kosk then stated which immediately got a response from Akara.
"Fett rid us of the Death Watch. That's his legacy to Mandalore." Akara reminded her Clan mate.
Kosk then responded with a huff, as it was obvious that this was a topic that the two of them had butted heads over more than once.
"After which, he became a bounty hunter." It was clear from Kosk's voice what he thought about the former Mandalores' decision to drop his title.
As he very much disapproved of Fett's choice, especially considering that there was one matter of business that most Mandalorians like him felt like he hadn't bothered to deal with. But Akara, who herself had fought on the side of the True Mandalorians knew that it wasn't Jango's job to look after them.
That the Clans could do themselves, so long as they could organize. Something that the Kriffing dar'manda had done everything to prevent from happening.
'Just like stanging tsad droten.' Akara thought bitterly.
As she was more than aware of how Satina and the Republic worked to ensure that no Mandalorian Clan could grow too powerful, as to be able to challenge their authority in the sector.
Still, Akara could dwell on these thoughts another time, as her burc'ya needed a good reminder of just what their Mandalore did before he had left them to pursue a career as a bounty hunter.
"The Mandalores' choices were always his own; as he could've easily abandoned us once the True Mando'ade were crushed by the jettise on Galidraan. But he didn't, he instead came back and finished the job." Akara said as she and Kosk continued to debate the issue regarding Fett's legacy to the Mandalorians.
For his part, John remained silent during this exchange between Akara and Kosk, for he knew that he couldn't add anything useful to this conversation.
Still, the conversation between the two Clan members continued arguing over Fett's legacy; and seeing no end in sight, John switched over to a private Com with Cortana.
"Cortana, can you put together a briefing on Jango Fett?" John then asked her.
As it was obvious that he needed to get up to speed on the past leader of the Mandalorian Clans. Especially considering that with his last run-in with the Death Watch, John felt that there was a good chance that he might run into Fett sometime in the near future.
"I can, but I would recommend that you ask the old man first," Cortana said, as she subtly pushed him to socialize more.
Because despite how hard it might be for the Chief, he needed to start making connections in this galaxy.
Especially if that came to pass, and they were unable to return to UGE space in time or in the just as likely event that they did come for them, but too late for her.
Knowing that, Cortana wanted to prepare John the best she could, once that come to pass.
For the AI knew that it would be something of a challenge for him to overcome, and honestly Cortana knew that this place, not this culture, would probably be the only place where John would have a chance of being human.
Or at least she hoped, as there was no certainty in any galaxy.
Even so, Cortana hoped that she could at the very least planet seed that would allow this to occur.
But such ideas and hopes were currently a long way off, as Cortana knew they had to deal with the Mandalorian Clans currently trying to bully and force John into their service.
But thankfully it seemed that they would be one step closer to dealing with this issue, as the argument between Akara and Kosk had ended, and it seemed that they had come to their decision.
"After hearing of what has taken place and speaking to alor Akara. We have made our decision regarding your request." Kosk said, clearly not happy with the decision, but was willing to follow his Clan leaders' choice.
Chief didn't say anything, as Akara then spoke into the silence that had been left for her to fill.
"Regard your request, Clan Spar and I would be honoured to ensure that this contest is performed in that which those in the Manda would favour." Akara then informed the Chief of their decision.
To which the Chief nodded in return, as his mind then turned to what would come next. As he knew that in all likelihood, they would want something in exchange for this. If not, then that was fine by him, but that was highly unlikely so John thought it was better to get this out of the way so that they could finish his business here.
As he did have other things that he wished to do before the day was done on the moon.
"What do you want in return for this?" Chief asked the question.
After which Akara then thought for a moment. As she knew that was one thing that she had been suspecting but had no way of verifying. But the only way she could do that was to monitor the person in question; which was different considering that she and her Clan were rarely in the Mandalorian system.
As such Akara knew what she would ask in exchange for this service to the Master Chief.
"In return for this, I want you to keep an eye on the moon's governor. For I believe that he has other plans for Mandalore that are yet to be seen." Akara stated cryptically.
John asked the question she wanted him to ask, all the while feeling that he was going to like the answer he was going to get.
"In what way?" The Chief asked, his voice taking on a darker tone.
"I believe that he's involved with the Death Watch in some way." The leader of Clan Spar laid bare her suspicions.
After which the three of them then turned their attention to what each party wanted from this arrangement. All the while Chief could not help but feel that despite everything he had tried to avoid, once again events were pushing towards the eye of the storm.
For he knew that nothing could change his course now. Whether it be for good or ill, John will not back down from this challenge as he intended to win and reap every benefit, he could from it.
All the while he hoped that his actions did not ignite another Civil War on the moon of Concordia.

And that is all she wrote. I hope that you enjoyed this chapter.
Also, sorry if this chapter seemed a bit off, but this was the best way that I could think of, still it gets us to where we need to go.
That and I saw the comments on the last chapter, so I have marked these two to be redone later when I get some time, as I am redoing the next chapter completely from scratch, as I was not happy with how it read and flowed, and everything seemed forced.
Then again it was an earlier chapter from when Covid was in full swing, so that isn't surprising.
So, expect a delay in the next chapter coming out as I try to get this worked out.
Also, I must thank Mandalore the Survivor again for the idea with Clan Spar and Akara. So please show him some love in the comments.
Anyway, that's all I have to say, until next time, have a good one.
