Part of Your World
"Once again Gotham's famed Dynamic Duo saved the day. This time, the pair foiled another one of Joker's heinous schemes. Over thirty hostages were saved here at the GNBC studios including talk show host Franklin Murray. According to eyewitness accounts, Joker had hidden a gas bomb within the studio, but thanks to the quick thinking of Batman and his young sidekick Robin, the bomb was quickly disposed of, and the Joker immediately handcuffed. We've got exclusive footage of the fight inside the studio up next. Take a look."
Zatanna sat snugly on her couch with a bowl of popcorn and some tea. A blanket covered her legs while a scrunchy held her hair in place. On the screen, the Batman pulled off some impressive blocks, kicks, and punches. However, her eyes were glued solely on the red and black Boy Wonder. He was nimble and quick. His strength didn't compare to that of those large Joker brutes, so he flipped and dodged. He used speed instead of mass to create force. Sometimes he even redirected a thug's punch to another making everyone look so silly. Zatanna could only bite her lip at the masterful performance. She felt like a little girl watching an acrobat fly through the air at the circus.
"God, he's so hot."
"Zatanna! What are you still doing up?" her father asked just as he walked in the door.
"Oh! Uhhh hi Daddy! Uhh How was work?"
"Ugh it was ok. It is my week to watch the team at Mount Justice. Nothing special happened. I hand off to Canary tomorrow."
"Oh, I see. How was the team?"
"….Why do you ask?"
"Uhh no reason," she tried to put on her brightest smile.
"That doesn't sound like a question without a reason. And why are you watching this nonsense!?"
A little perturbed, Giovanni quickly turned off the TV and glared at his daughter.
"Daddy c'mon! I just wanted to watch the news! Y'know, to keep up with current events!"
"We live in New York. Why on Earth would you be watching Gotham news?"
"Uhhh well…"
A light bulb went off in Giovanni's head when he realized his daughter's true intentions. He sighed in disappointment wiping sweat off his forehead.
"Zatanna, piccola, we've discussed this countless times. You will not partake in any hero work."
"But Daddy! You do it! And the Team needs a magician!"
"No! You are not fully in control of your magic! I have years and years of training to back me up. Besides, you only see what the media glorifies. Being a hero is dangerous work. You haven't seen all the nasty things these villains put out. It's not always saving kittens from trees or people from fires."
"I know that, Daddy! But at some point, I will have to learn! You shoulda seen me against the Reds with the team a while back! I had some cool moves! Even Robin thought-"
"Again with this Robin nonsense! Ugh he is not an example to follow! I still cannot believe Batman would let a child experience the horrors that is Gotham City."
"Daddy! He's your friend!"
"And as his friend, I should have stopped him from letting Robin put on a hero costume. Why must you insist on this, Zatanna? What's wrong with being a normal girl?"
"Because I am far from normal, Dad! I want to make a difference, like you!"
"No, Zatanna! You are forbidden from ever speaking about this ever again!"
"This is so unfair!" Zatanna screamed standing up.
Just as she got off the couch, the blanket fell revealing bright red pajama pants with a yellow 'R' on the side of her hip. Giovanni stared with mouth agape and eyes wide. Zatanna took a second but realized what had happened and quickly tried to cover the 'R' with her hands.
"Uhhhh I can explain," she stuttered.
"What is the meaning of this?!"
"Ummmm it's really comfy?"
"What is your relationship with the boy!?"
"Nothing! Nothing! Honest! He's just a friend!"
"Stop lying to me, Zatanna! I know you create clones to pretend to be in bed. I know you've been sneaking out. I worry so much every time you leave. I thought you'd care enough about me to come clean."
"Daddy, I'm…I'm so sorry."
"Is he the boy? Have you been seeing him?"
"…..Yes."
"Dammit!"
"Daddy!"
"No wonder you've got all this hero nonsense in your brain! It's that boy! He's corrupted your mind thinking hero work is all fun and games. It is not, Zatanna! He is vermin and has twisted your mind! That's it! I forbid you from seeing him ever again!"
"Daddy no please! He's not like that!"
"I don't care! This conversation is over! Nrub stnap dna egnahc otni etairporppa eritta!" (Burn pants and change into appropriate attire).
In a flash, Zee's Robin pants went up in flames leaving behind plain purple pajama pants.
"Daddy! Those were limited edition! I had to ask Cecily a huge favor to get me those!"
"I don't care. Go to your room now!"
"Ughhh you are the worst! I hate you!"
With that, Zatanna stormed off back into her room leaving Giovanni to sink into the couch and cool off a bit. Reaching her bedroom, Zatanna jumped onto the bed and hugged her little Robin plushie. Tears freely flowed from her eyes as she curled up into the bed.
"This is so unfair!" she sobbed, "He gets to do all the hero work while I'm cooped up in this boring normal civilian life. He saves people while I just sit on the sidelines and just watch. How dare he call Robin vermin!"
She got up and walked to the windowsill to stare at the moon.
"He's the nicest, sweetest guy ever. He's so fun, and playful, and brave, and smart. He- he just so….so-"
"Well? Keep going? I'm so what?"
Zatanna jumped back a little startled by the surprise voice. Looking up, she saw Robin opening her window and climbing into her bedroom like he had done numerous times before.
"Robin!" Zatanna happily cried dashing forward to hug the Boy Wonder snugly.
"Heya, Zee! How was your day."
"Ugh, fine, until my dad came home."
"Oh? What happened there?"
"Pft, he just went on about how hero work is dangerous and that I shouldn't join the team blah blah. God, he's such a hypocrite. He does so much hero work, but he keeps me locked up like a little dove."
"Well, maybe he's not all wrong."
"Huh?"
He took her hand and guided her back to her bed where they both settled in. She crossed her legs and leaned against the headboard ready to listen to what Robin had to say.
"Look, Zee, you know I care about you, right?"
"Uhhh yea?" she stuttered with her cheeks burning red.
"So I'm always gonna be honest with you, ok?"
"Yea, ok."
"Hero work is tough. It's not all cool poses and saving people. Sometimes, you don't save everyone. There's always this feeling of doubt inside where you wonder if you were fast enough or did something different you could've saved that extra one person. The bad guys, they don't care who you are. If you're trying to stop their plans, they will try and kill you. Honestly, I can get scared at times."
"Really? You do?"
"Of course. I get scared more often than you think. But I hide it all behind a smile and an annoying cackle. Because sometimes you have to push beyond your fears and try your best. It's not easy, Zee. I've had practice. Your father knows this, too. He loves you and he just wants to protect you."
"But I feel like I can help. I can do so much more! I wanna be where the heroes are! I wanna see them fight and protect people….I wanna see you."
"I know you do. Honestly, I'd be thrilled if you'd join the team. You kicked major butt against the Reds. But your father knows your limits better than I do. Just give it a bit more time. When he feels you are ready, maybe you could ask him again."
"Yea. You're probably right."
"Trust me, Zee. He's being a good father," he said turning away solemnly, "I wish my parents were still around to berate me like that."
"Huh? What do you mean?"
"Nothing," he sniffled slightly, "Maybe I'll tell you one day."
"Ok."
"Besides, you don't need to be a hero to see me! I'll just visit and kidnap you again like the past few weeks!"
"Hehehe, I guess."
"C'mon! Don't tell me you haven't had fun!"
"Yes yes, it's been a blast. All the late-night movies, ice cream, roller skating. You really know how to show a girl a good time. I bet you take all the girls out on dates like that."
"Actually no. Only the girl I like. Only you."
"….Oh."
The bedroom fell silent as both Zatanna and Robin held their breaths. They could feel a strong magnetic force slowly pulling them together. Neither resisted as they both leaned closer and closer together. With their lips mere centimeters apart and their breaths just barely ghosting each other, a loud knock banged on the door.
"Zatanna, piccola? I'm sorry about before. May we talk? I have hot cocoa!" Giovanni announced from behind the locked door.
Panicking, Robin moved to get off the bed and headed towards the window. Before he could get any farther, Zatanna tugged him back by the cape and cupped his face in place. Without warning, she placed her lips onto his. Quickly and tightly, she kissed him as he returned her feelings with equal fervor. With a tiny smack they separated completely out of breath.
"I can't wait to be part of your world," she whispered.
"I can't wait to see you again."
"Eyb eyb, ydriB." (byE bye, Birdy).
With a puff of smoke, Robin poofed out of the room and into the yard outside. Straightening her hair, Zatanna got up and opened the door.
"Hi Dad. Ooo cocoa!"
"Hello, darling. Is everything ok? I thought I heard some whispers."
"Oh nothing, just a little birdy out the window…"
AN: Part of Your World from The Little Mermaid.
I've had this song stuck in my head for weeks now. I just had to put of a Chalant songfic about it. I kinda made Giovanni a bit OOC but it fits the mood and theme of the song a bit better if he were harsh like King Triton was. Either way, I hope this was sweet for yall.
