Leave Before You Love Me
"Thank you! Thank you all for coming tonight! You've been a wonderful audience and such good sports. I've been told by our handlers backstage that we'll be able to perform our grand finale: making an elephant disappear!"
*WOOO*
*YEAHHH*
*I LOVE YOU ZATANNA*
The crowd roared and cheered as Zatanna strutted along the stage. Her heels clicked and clacked against the wood while her assistants rolled a big box draped with a purple curtain out for everyone to see. Like she had done many times before, Zatanna twirled and winked to the crowd.
"You all are in for a treat. I was worried for a second that our elephant, Ms. Periwinkle, wouldn't be cooperative tonight. Now obviously I had a backup finale in case Ms. Periwinkle wasn't up to the task, but this is more fun!"
All eyes were upon the beautiful magician as she made her way to the side of the box ready to pull the cord and reveal the big star of the finale. Her eyes scanned across the theater noting all the unique audience members. It was her first time performing in Las Vegas, so she was curious to see who she had attracted. There was a family of four in matching Hawaiian shirts. A few rows over was a bachelorette party with the bride-to-be in a bright pink sash and a mini veil. A group of frat boys who had been catcalling her all night stayed surprisingly still. The elephant gag probably had them intrigued.
"Ladies and gentlemen, meet Ms. Periwinkle!" Zatanna smiled as she pulled the cord, and the curtain dropped.
*GASP*
*HUH*
*WAIT…*
"Huh? What seems to be the problem?" she asked.
"That's no elephant!" a child cried out from the third row.
"Whaat?" she jokingly shrugged.
Indeed, in the box was not an elephant but instead was a cow. More specifically, it was a fake plastic cow fitted with a long foil tube that was supposed to be a trunk, grey paper to replicate the elephant's skin, and cardboard taped to the head to look like ears. Some folks in the audience were a little skeptical as her previous tricks had been astonishing. How could the great Zatanna go from turning coins into fish to having a fake cow on stage and calling it an elephant? Others however, relaxed knowing to trust the Mistress of Magic…..Plus the tickets were on sale so it wasn't a total waste.
"C'mon guys," she calmly smiled, "Where's your sense of imagination? Can't you see that long trunk? Or the big floppy ears? Sure, she's a little undersized, but you try finding an elephant at a reasonable cost in this economy!"
*HAHAHA*
"How about this? We are in Vegas after all. Let's have a little friendly wager. If I can't get you to believe Ms. Periwinkle here is a real elephant, I will fully refund everyone's ticket!"
*OOOOOO*
"But, if I win, you all must apologize to Ms. Periwinkle for doubting her. Deal?"
*HAH! THERE'S NO WAY. IMMA GET MY MONEY BACK*
*I'M SO EXCITED! WHAT'S SHE GONNA DO!*
*WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU LOST ALL OUR MONEY PLAYING BLACKJACK*
"Alright folks. When I snap my fingers, you shall be fully convinced that we've got a real live elephant up here!"
*WAIT THAT'S IT?*
*JUST A SNAP OF HER FINGERS?*
*SUCH A DISAPPOINTING SHOW*
*WE SHOULDA WENT TO SEE THE BLUE MAN GROUP*
"Here we go! One. Two. Three!"
*SNAP*
All of a sudden, purple sparkles began appearing around the cow mannequin. The foil tube didn't look like foil anymore. The grey paper began fading and seeping into the torso. The hard rigid cardboard started to flop around a bit. Right before the Vegas audience, the cow taped with household arts and crafts parts began growing….and moving.
*WHOA*
*NO WAY*
*IT CAN'T BE*
*BVAROOOOMF*
And just like that, right in front of this crowd, the mannequin cow became a living, breathing elephant. Jaws were agape in the audience. No one could believe their eyes. Zatanna meanwhile hid a smirk.
"Ladies and gentlemen, meet Ms. Periwinkle!" she laughed and gestured to the elephant on stage.
Like a true professional, Ms. Periwinkle waved with her trunk and raised her front legs.
"I told you! Now I believe an apology is in order," Zatanna teased, "And you can do so by lining up for pictures! Please safely line up at the edge of the stage and take your phones out! Don't you worry. Ms. Periwinkle isn't shy at all!"
A couple of hours later after pretty much everyone in the audience got their picture with Ms. Periwinkle, Zatanna sat by the hotel bar. She was so tired that she didn't bother changing out of her stage outfit. Though heels were traded for flats, her coat and fishnets remained. Leaning against the counter, she swirled her whiskey a bit.
"Heh. I can't believe the elephant gag still works after all these years," she mumbled to herself while taking a sip, "Can't believe it took me this long to perform in Vegas."
It was true. Zatanna had never performed in Vegas until tonight. How long had it really been though? On paper, she's been a stage magician for about five-ish years. However…
"Excuse me?"
"Huh?" she turned around now having lost her train of thought.
"I really enjoyed your show tonight," the new voice replied.
"Oh. Uh thank you."
"May I buy you a drink?"
"Uhhh…"
Normally Zatanna had rules for these kinds of things. Keep your distance. Don't open up. Be memorable and forgettable at the same time…..and yet.
"Sorry, I don't mean to impose," he apologized.
"No! It's ok. I'm just tired. But a drink would be nice," she smiled.
Something about this stranger eased her worries. He had a rather interesting alure to him. He wasn't dressed super fancy. A simple blue dress shirt and slacks. He didn't seem to be trying to show off. His sleeves were rolled up, but all his buttons were in place. His hair was messy, but stylish. His blue eyes were so…..inviting.
"Soo what are you having?" he asked.
"Uhh just a whiskey neat."
"Ooo straight and to the point I see."
"Hehe. Can't go wrong with a classic."
"Two whiskeys please! One neat and one on the rocks!" he tapped on the counter getting the bartender's attention.
"On the rocks?" she asked teasingly.
"I'm not as daring as you. Besides, I had a few beers before showing up here."
"Ahh. And why are you here exactly?"
"In Vegas or sitting at the bar with you?"
"Cheeky," she rolled her eyes, "Both I guess."
"Well, I'm in Vegas for my friend's bachelor party. He's a pretty big eater, and what better place to satiate a bottomless pit than an all you can eat buffet."
"Haha. Really? That's why the party's in Vegas? Not the gambling or the risqué shows? Buffets?"
"I mean where else are you going to find enormous amounts of good quality food for the price of a few hundred dollars?"
"Touché."
"But yea. The group got into a debate about how real the magic shows were here."
"Oh?"
"Yup. The groom-to-be is a bit of a science nerd. So, we figured we'd take him to a show and see if he could explain the tricks and illusions."
"And how'd that turn out?"
"Well, he started babbling incoherently and pacing back and forth so much that the rug might've caught on fire. So, the others are dealing with him as I slipped away. And then I saw you."
"Really now?"
"Mmm hmm. I didn't get my picture."
"Oh, so that's the game. You buy me a drink so you could take a selfie with me?"
"What? No, of course not. I wanted a pic with Ms. Periwinkle," he teased.
"Hehehehe" she giggled.
Drinks were served as the pair laughed. The stranger politely slid Zatanna her glass of whiskey as he held up his own.
"Cheers," he smiled, "To a good show."
"To good company," she replied.
*CLINK*
"Do you still get that rush?" he asked after taking a sip.
"Hmm?"
"That anticipation. Before the show. Then once the lights go on and the crowd greets you with thunderous applause, adrenaline kicks in. And you're just in the moment. Smiling becomes easy. Laughing and waving to the crowd becomes second nature. You're making people happy, so you feel happy."
"I-wow…" she looked at him while hiding her rosy cheeks behind her glass.
"S-sorry. I didn't mean to…dramatize that so much."
"No no! It just sounded so…right. I do kinda feel like that. Sometimes you fall into a trace. You start calmly and then you walk out bursting with energy. Then you feel relieved when everything goes right."
"Yup. No other feeling like it."
"And you would know this because?"
"Let's just say this ain't my first rodeo, kid," he winked.
"Sigh. Still cheeky I see."
"Must be the alcohol."
They sat in comfortable silence for just a bit longer. The electronic buzz from slot machines mixed with the upbeat jazz music permeating throughout the hotel provided a nice calming ambience. It wasn't like the conversation died down. But more, it faded into a natural conclusion. Normally, Zatanna would thank the stranger for the drink and leave. Again, memorable but forgettable. But she wanted to continue this interaction just a bit longer. At the very least he wasn't a creep like most guys she usually encountered. Granted that was a very low bar…..ANYWHO.
"What's your stance?" she asked, breaking the silence.
"Hmm?"
"On magic. Real or not?"
"Hmm. I'm not sure. Like my friend, I have some skepticism and do believe that some things have reasonable, real-world explanations."
"Oh…" she bit her lip in minor disappointment.
"But, I've also seen things that no one can explain. Things in which Occam's Razor says that magic must be real. So I'm 50/50."
"How about if I tilt the scale in my favor a bit?" she smiled now invigorated with his answer.
"Oh? A free magic show from the great Zatanna?"
"It's not free. You bought me a drink after all."
"Fair. Alright then. Blow me away."
"I'm glad you added the away. Most men I meet just stop at 'blow me'."
"I'm not most men."
With a flick of her wrist, Zatanna obtained a brand-new box of cards. She held it up to his face to show him that it was still sealed and not tampered with in any way. His brows furrowed giving away his doubt. An amusing smirk grew on her lips.
"You can touch it if you want. Inspect them as much as you like. It's a brand-new deck that I have not messed with in any way," she teased.
Taking her up on her offer, the stranger took the box from her and broke the seal. Opening and tilting the box, a standard deck of cards slid out. He turned them, revealing all the numbers and suits ordered perfectly. All 2s to ace's were accounted for.
"Perfect. Now shuffle them for me," she ordered.
"Y'know for an exclusive Zatanna trick, I seem to be doing all the work here."
"Just shuffle!"
"Let me guess. I pick a card?" he asked shuffling the cards and placing the stack on the counter.
"Of course. That's how all card tricks go. I'll even close my eyes and look the other way," she replied turning on the stool so that her back was facing him.
Still slightly skeptical at the simplicity of the trick, the stranger covered the deck with one hand before sliding a single card out. He lifted it gently and just enough to peek at what he had chosen: the eight of hearts.
"You pick your card yet?" she asked, still looking away.
"Yup."
"Cool!" she smiled as she turned around, "Give it to me. Face down of course."
"Not much of a trick yet, huh?" he asked submitting his card.
"Y'know, You're kinda right. I might have messed up. I can't use this defective card."
Then, out of the blue, Zatanna pulled a lighter out from her pocket and lit the card on fire. In the blink of an eye, Dick's supposed eight of hearts went up in smoke leaving a tiny pile of ashes. He was very confused, but her smile and aura of confidence convinced the stranger to let the act play on.
"Ok. Now what?" he asked.
"And now…..we drink," she winked while picking up her glass.
"….Ok?" he also picked up his drink, but noticed something different about the ice.
In the glass, there was a portion of the ice cube that sat above the whiskey line. Right on that surface, was a little nub that wasn't there before. Somewhat catching on to the trick, Dick looked at the ice cube, then back to Zatanna, then back to the ice cube, then back to Zatanna.
"Just pull it out!" she giggled.
Complying, the stranger plucked at the nub and pulled at a tiny somewhat soggy little scroll. He unfurled the wet paper revealing none other than…the eight of hearts.
"W-wait. What!?" he was astonished, "No way."
"Way schway my good man," she winked again.
"Then. What card did you burn?"
"The eight of hearts," she said nonchalantly.
"But how? That isn't possible."
"Occam's Razor, handsome. Magic is real. You can even keep that card if you like."
"Heh. You really are incredible."
"I know," she teasingly shrugged.
"Well, thank you for the one-of-a-kind little magic show. I appreciate it."
"Of course! But enjoy it while it lasts. I may fine tune this trick and put it in my show."
"Then I'll have to buy a ticket to the next one."
"I'll be looking for you in the crowd."
With a nod, the stranger got up and started to walk away. He turned back and waved good night before presumably rejoining the bachelor party. Zatanna meanwhile started to collect the cards and stuff them into the deck box. However, one card looked a little odd. It was the jack of spades, but on the back was something scribbled in sharpie. Looking at it closer, Zatanna was shocked to see that the writing….was a phone number!
"Next round's on me – DG"
Zatanna was baffled. The stranger had his hands full and was making eye contact with her the entire time! When did he have time to pull out a marker and write his phone number down!?
"You already bought the first round, you dork," she rolled her eyes, "DG huh?"
TWO MONTHS LATER
"I have a chai tea latte for…uh…..Zataena? Zattana?"
"Hi! I'm Zatanna!"
"Ok cool! Enjoy your drink!"
Ah Gotham City, the rare metropolitan area that was nice enough to be considered a sprawling urban center, but also run down enough to be of lower fame than New York or Los Angeles. More importantly, the cost of living was significantly less than those places. Zatanna normally didn't like to stay in one place too long. Another one of her rules after all: don't get too attached. However, her show had been in decline recently. Some folks blamed it on tiktok and the short attention span of this newer generation. However, Zatanna had to admit that she'd been stuck behind a creativity block for a while. One could only make an elephant appear and reappear so many times. So, a residency at a theater was needed to keep a steady flow of revenue for a bit. She wanted to visit somewhere new, so Gotham was her home for a little while. Plus, the contract offered by Bruce Wayne to headline the Gotham Theater for a bit was way too good to pass up. Tea in hand, Zatanna sat down at a booth and opened up her book. She eagerly flipped through the pages to reach her silk ribbon bookmark. "The Hound of Baskerville" was starting to get interesting after all.
"Heh. Looks like Arthur got to live out his dream after all. Good for him.," she mused.
"Well, you're a sight for sore eyes," a voice interrupted her.
Zatanna scrunched her nose and looked up. All she wanted was some peace and quiet to read her novel. But one look at those bright blue eyes softened her irritation.
"Huh. DG, I presume."
"I heard you were in town. Didn't expect to find you at a quaint coffee shop like this," DG smiled.
"Oh? And how'd you know I was coming to Gotham?"
"Billboards. Lots of ads for the great Zatanna Zatara at the Gotham Theater."
"Ah. I see. Seems Mr. Wayne really wants to make sure his investment was worth it."
"Eh, don't mind Bruce. He cares more about the cause than the profits."
"And how would you know so much about Mr. Bruce Wayne?"
"Please. I lived with the guy for ten years."
"Huh….ok. I think it's about time for introductions," she teased.
"Haha. Dick Grayson. Pleasure to meet you, Ms. Zatara," he extended his hand with a charming smile.
"Nice to meet you, again…..Dick? Really? Dick?"
"Eh. I didn't like the sound of Rick," he shrugged, "May I join you?"
"Wouldn't be the first time."
Dick sat down placing his steaming cup of coffee on the table. Out of habit, Zatanna started to take note of certain features that made Dick Grayson stand out. His hair was more neatly combed than when she last saw him. He seemed casual in his leather jacket, but somehow still all business with a button up shirt underneath. Then, the chain around his neck caught her eye as it led to a bright and shiny….police badge.
"You're a cop?" she asked.
"Detective, but yea."
"Are you based here in Gotham?"
"Yup. Grew up here too. For the most part anyway."
"Hmm. What are sights to see then?"
"Well, the Gotham Life Building is pretty cool. One of the tallest buildings in the city. The views up there are really something. There's also Gotham Park, the carnival by the bay. But personally, I like the theater district. Hear they got a new headliner down there."
"Oh really?"
"Yup. Lots of rave reviews. She's jaw-dropping, show-stopping, absolutely spectacular."
"Ok there, hotshot. Laying it on a little too thick."
"What? You thought I was talking about you? No way! I'm talking about Celine Dion coming to town!"
"You jerk!" she laughed, "….wait is she actually coming?"
"Haha no! She's probably way out of the budget."
"For Bruce Wayne though?"
"Maybe. Maybe not."
"But I'm within the budget," she raised her eyebrow.
"Cause over profits."
"Mmm hmm," Zatanna sipped at her tea deciding to drop the topic, "So how's your soon-to-be married friend?"
"Good. He thinks you hid goldfish up your sleeve when you did the coin trick."
"Ah ever the skeptic."
"Can't win them all. Anyway. I gotta get going. Break's almost over. It's nice to see you again, Zatanna."
"Likewise, Dick."
ONE WEEK LATER
It was late at night as the chilly Gotham wind gusted along the street. The Gotham Theater was shutting down the last of its lights as Zatanna opened the backstage door and walked out into the cold windy night. While her show had debuted with some solid numbers, that creativity block still kept her from taking her act to new heights. She didn't want to have to go back to cliches like die boxes or pulling rabbits from hats. She needed something fresh and new. Eventually the Gotham crowd was going to get tired of the same old show over and over again.
"You seem chipper for someone who has the hottest show in town," that darned familiar voice landed on her ears.
"Mr. Grayson. Fancy seeing you here," she smiled.
"Eh not that fancy. I caught your show."
"I noticed. Third row, left aisle. Surprised you didn't spring for a front row seat."
"Ah, but that'd make me look desperate."
"Haha, and standing out in the cold waiting for me to emerge doesn't?"
"Not if I'm offering to take you to get some hot cocoa."
"Hmm y'know hot cocoa sounds lovely right about now."
"Then, if you'd do me the honor?"
He shifted to the side and extended his elbow out to her. For a moment however, Zatanna looked at his kind smiling figure. He was warm and inviting. Her brain for a brief moment reminded her that she should decline and head home. Memorable but forgettable…
"Lead the way, good sir," she blurted as she looped her arm around his.
Moments later, the two arrived at a nearby diner. It was late with only a few people taking up a handful of tables. Dick led Zatanna to a booth and ordered two cups of hot cocoa.
"A diner for hot cocoa?" she asked skeptically.
"Hey, don't knock it till you try it."
"Heh. You're the expert here."
"Have I ever led you astray?"
"Technically you've never led me anywhere."
"Fair. But trust me. They've got a family recipe."
"Ooo I love those."
The drinks arrived as Zatanna began looking over the menu. A lot of things seemed really appealing like a big fluffy waffle or a simple airy crepe. Dick meanwhile simply stirred his cocoa and watched his marshmallows float about.
"So, why detective?" she asked, putting the menu down.
"Hmm?"
"Why become a police detective?"
"Well, I lost my parents at a young age due to er…not natural causes."
"Oh….I'm sorry."
"Nah it's ok. But yea. I wanted to do good and put some positive energy out into the world. So, I fight crime."
"I see. But what about before? You talked about that anticipation of being onstage for a performance. You spoke as if you'd done that before."
"I have. I was a circus performer."
"Really?"
"Yup. Flying trapeze."
"Wait….Grayson. Of the Flying Graysons?!"
"In the flesh."
"Oh my god!" she beamed with glee, "You guys were legends! I only got the chance to see one show, but it was spectacular!"
"Yea. We had a good run…until we didn't."
"Right…"
"But yea! That's all in the past now. How about you? How'd you get into magic?"
"Ah hehe w-well it was my dad. He performed for quite some time and taught me at a young age. And I just really really enjoyed it. His sleight of hand was so cool. All the illusions. He was mesmerizing. I wanted to be like him. I wanted to make people smile just like he did. Oh if only…"
Her initial excitement slowly faded into somber silence. She looked away as her face held a bittersweet melancholy expression. Dick noticed, but didn't want to push.
"If only he could see me now…"
"I understand," Dick reached out and placed his hand on hers, "It takes time."
"Sometimes too much time," she mumbled.
"Hmm?"
"Nothing! But y'know, enough about the past. How's your friend? When's the wedding?"
"Hah. He's good. The date is set for a few months from now. Tons of planning still needs to be done. Mainly catering."
"Ah right. Bottomless pit."
"Yea. Seeing him eat is not pretty. Definitely puts the 'dis' in disgusting."
"Haha…..wait what'd you say?" she giggled.
"Uhh n-nothing," he squirmed trying to play it off.
"No no. You said dis in disgusting? What's that supposed to mean?"
"It's nothing. Stupid really. Don't worry about it."
"Dick c'mon. I wanna know."
"Sigh. Y'know how the English language is made up of a lot of prefixes and whatnot? Y'know like overwhelmed or underwhelmed?"
"Yea."
"I like to mix and match prefixes or even just use the root word. Like take over and underwhelmed. There's no middle ground. Is anyone ever just whelmed?"
"…pfft AHAHAHAHA," she burst out laughing.
"See. It's stupid."
"No no no! Haha. I think it's kinda cute."
"Huh?"
"Y'know. It's whimsy and it's fun."
"Really?"
"Yea. I'm pretty familiar with the English language. I know it frontwards and backwards. So, hearing something new like just chopping off the prefixes and using the root word is kinda cool."
"Heh. My friends just call me quirky."
"Quirky is cool," she smiled, "Let me try."
"Ok."
"Hmm. Dis- obviously means bad."
"Ok."
"And disaster is really bad."
"Ok."
"Soooo is aster just kinda ok? As in not a bad situation?"
"Huh. I hadn't come up with that one yet."
"Hehe. I like it! Aster. It's like a vibe. Feeling a vibe."
"Feeling the aster," he finished her thought.
"Hehe. Yea. Feeling the aster."
The two continued to talk for what felt like hours. The rest of the customers had gone home, but Dick and Zatanna remained in their own little bubble. It wasn't until the sun started rising and the diner's day crew showed up that the two new friends decided to head out.
"Do you need me to walk you home?" he offered.
"Thank you, but I'll be ok. I'm not too far from here. What about you? Do you have to go to the station this morning?"
"Nah. Today's my day off."
"That's good. I'd feel bad if I kept you up all night."
"I wouldn't. I had a really great time."
"Me too."
The pair stood by in silence. Dick stuck his hands in his pockets while Zatanna pulled her coat tighter around her. Neither said anything, but neither really wanted to part. Slowly the sun rose shining its light along the street. Windows started to open, and people began leaving their apartments to start the day.
"Well. Thank you for the cocoa and the company," she smiled, "Get home safe, Dick."
He nodded as she turned away. She didn't get very far, however. Only a few steps in and Dick practically stopped her in her tracks with just six words.
"When can I see you again?"
She froze. Suddenly she realized that she shouldn't be this happy. She shouldn't become any more attached than she already was. This was a mistake. She needed to cut ties right here, right now. After all, she was cursed…
"Zatanna?"
"I- uhh…."
"I get coffee every morning on my way to work at Jitters. Y'know, the place we met last week? Where you tried to read Sherlock Holmes?"
"R-right…"
"I-if you'd like we could make it a thing? Y'know friendly morning greetings?"
"Yes," she blurted without thinking, "I'd love to."
"Cool. Uhh text me. After all, you have my number, but I don't have yours."
"O-of course! I'll text you when I get home."
"Perfect. Good n-…morning to you."
"And you too, Dick."
She watched him walk away. Her heart pounding inside her chest. There was something about him that piqued her interest. He was calming, witty, and just fun to be with. But this was wrong. She shouldn't be involved like this…not again, not after last time. But now a date was set. She was in too deep. Yet, she wanted to see him again.
And thus began the early morning chats between Dick and Zatanna. At first, she had hoped to avoid the meeting by coming in late to the coffee shop. Keep him waiting and maybe he'd lose interest. Except, even though Zatanna arrived nearly an hour late, there he was sitting in a booth with a cup of hot coffee and a cup of chai tea, her favorite. He even pulled out a chair for her. He wasn't upset or irritated. If anything, he simply asked if she was ok. Embarrassed, she lied saying her alarm just didn't go off.
The next week, Zatanna came in early hoping to just get her chai tea and leave. However, Dick arrived just when her order was called. She thought it'd be rude to skedaddle, so she sat with him yet again. After a while, she started to give in. He was being sweet, and she didn't exactly dislike sitting and chatting with him. Besides, it wasn't as if they were going to get more involved. What's coffee and tea between friends?
"Wait wait wait," she giggled, "So you're saying he was robbing banks so he could buy season tickets to the Gotham Knights?"
"Yes! And he wore the same mask he robbed banks with to the games!"
"There's no way. That's so obvious! How come it took forever to catch him!?"
"Eh, it's Gotham."
"Oof. Throwing shade at your own team?"
"I mean. I'm just one guy. Sometimes the whole system is just so…corrupt."
"Hmm. Is that why those folks in spandex jump around at night?"
"Maybe," he leaned back trying to hide how tense he'd become at that subject.
"Heh," she sipped her tea, "I wish I had something interesting for you. Nothing really happens when you run the same show night after night."
"How much longer are you here for anyway?"
"A few months."
"And then what?"
"And then I find a new city, I guess."
"Oh…" he sulked without even trying to hide it.
"Um well, anyway, I gotta get going. Thank you again for the tea, but please, let me pay next time," she got up.
"W-wait!"
"Hmm?"
"Listen, this might seem weird but….would you wanna go to a wedding?"
"Huh?"
"I know I know it's very weird, but basically, Artemis, Wally's bride, is short a bridesmaid. Long story but her sister is kinda MIA and went off the grid for whatever reason. And Wally doesn't really want to cut down on groomsman cause that'd be awkward, but Artemis doesn't know that many other people so she's kinda desperate and will take any girl that's remotely connected to our friend group…"
"Uhhhh."
"I'm sorry. That was a lot. Basically, Artemis needs a bridesmaid and I'm asking if you'd do it?...But also if you'd like to go to my friend's wedding with me?"
There was something about that sheepish smile. Dick Grayson was an interesting hodgepodge of characteristics. He was tall, lean but toned (or she assumed given how tight his shirts could be). His jaw was sharp and most of the time his wit was immaculate. And yet, when you peel back all the layers, you could see just how shy and awkward he could be at times. Shy, but genuine. They hadn't been friends for that long, and every instinct in Zatanna's body told her not to get involved, not to drag Dick into the mess that she was in. And yet…
"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to babble and spring this on you. I just wanted to ask you in a nonchalant way and…"
"Yes."
"Huh?" he looked at her with confused wide eyes.
"Yes, I'll go with you to the wedding and help out Artemis," she gently smiled.
"O-oh. Ok then!" he suddenly beamed with joy, "But I don't want to pressure you or anything.
"No, of course not. If anything you were rather….chalant."
Zatanna really did not understand how she just kept digging a deeper hole for herself. Rules were rules. Don't get involved. Don't get attached. She lived this long without any problems. She didn't want to cause any trouble or create any more pain. And yet here she was at a wedding for people she'd never met wearing a light green dress she'd probably never wear. But she was here for him, goddamn Dick Grayson. Speaking of, she was a little annoyed that they hadn't spent much time together despite being 'plus ones' to this wedding. However, Zatanna couldn't really fault him that much. Dick was the best man after all. He probably had a whole checklist of things to take care of.
Anyway, the venue was quite nice. Evidently Central City had more lush and scenic parks than Gotham did. It was going to be an outdoor ceremony. The sun was just barely setting, giving ample, beautiful light over the altar. Guests were flocking in and finding their seats. The wedding party began gathering to prepare for the wedding procession. Zatanna hadn't spent too much time with the bridesmaids being a last-minute addition. She tried to figure out what kind of person Artemis was by piecing together the personalities of the bridesmaids. Megan was super hyper and always wanted to involve everyone in everything. Such a cheerleader. Rocket was almost the complete opposite: very chill and laidback but also firm and kept folks on task. Barbara (or Babs as everyone called her) was nice and friendly but was definitely the mom of the group. Leave it to Babs to make sure all their dresses were straight, and all their flowers weren't smushed. As Dick previously mentioned, Artemis's sister, Jade, was going to be a no-show. A missing piece to the Artemis puzzle. Speaking of, where was Artemis?
Zatanna looked around and counted four groomsmen plus a pacing Wally (or who she assumed was Wally. Dick said that Wally had bright red hair, but there were two redheads!). She also spotted all four bridesmaids including herself. But if all the bridesmaids were here, then who's checking in on the bride? To avoid raising an alarm, Zatanna slipped away towards the dressing rooms. After roaming the halls for a bit, she could hear sobbing behind one of the doors.
"Hello?" she knocked.
The sobbing stopped and there was a moment of silence, as if the occupant of the room pretended not to be there.
"Artemis, is that you?" Zatanna tried again.
"Go away."
"Uhh everyone's kinda waiting for you. The procession's supposed to start soon."
"I-uh…."
"May I come in?"
There was no response, so Zatanna took the silence as a yes. As she opened the door, Artemis could be seen sitting in front of the vanity mirror. A little mascara was running down her cheeks, but nothing too serious yet. The dress was white, elegant, and simple. Nothing poofy or overly lacey. The veil sat on the couch along with some white gloves. Zatanna awkwardly stepped into the room and closed the door behind her.
"Uhhh hi," Zatanna shyly waved.
"Hi. I'm guessing you're Dick's date. Z-Z uh…"
"Zatanna."
"Right. I'm sorry."
"No no it's ok. I get it. Late sub."
"Yea. Thank you. I appreciate you doing this favor for a complete stranger."
"It's alright. I've never crashed a wedding by being invited to it, so this is first."
"Heh."
After lightening the mood slightly, Zatanna pulled up a chair and sat next to Artemis. Neither really made eye contact as Artemis kept looking away and Zatanna wasn't entirely sure how to proceed.
"So," Zatanna started.
"I'm really not in the mood for some speech about finding love or how it's my responsibility or how I'm letting so many people down," Artemis snapped back.
"Actually, I was going to ask who your florist was. Because they did an amazing job with all the flowers and center pieces."
"Pft," Artemis scoffed.
"No seriously! I might steal a bouquet or two and put them in my apartment."
"Hah. Please do. There are so many flowers around. I'd hate to see them go to waste."
More silence ensued. But it wasn't unpleasant as the previous one. Artemis finally looked at Zatanna, getting an idea of who the beauty sitting next to her was. Zatanna meanwhile simply crossed her arms and sent a glance.
"Eyes up here, honey," Zatanna joked.
"Haha. Sorry. It's just, interesting seeing you here as Dick's plus one."
"Oh? And why is that?"
"Babs is his ex."
"No," Zatanna gasped, genuinely surprised.
"Yup. They've been on and off for a while. I forget why they broke up, but this is the longest stretch in which they've been apart."
"And how long is that?"
"At least a year and a half."
"Ah."
"Most of us think she still likes him."
"I see. That would explain why she scolded me the hardest on not having my dress properly pressed."
"Haha yea that's Babs for ya."
"Lucky me…"
Artemis leaned back against the table with Zatanna relaxing and joining her. Some buzzing could be heard in the corner. No doubt people were starting to panic.
"You don't have to go out there though," Zatanna said.
"Really?"
"Yea. I mean if you're unsure then maybe this isn't the best course of action. I don't know either of you like at all, but if Wally's a scumbag or whatever, then I'll open the window for you myself so you can climb out."
"Why are you so bitter?" Artemis asked.
"My er last boyfriend wasn't great. Let's just say he sorta kinda cheated on me and then I got stuck with his debts."
"Oof. I'm sorry to hear that."
"Eh. I've gotten used to it over the years."
"Well. Wally's not really the problem. I mean he's kinda dumb and crass, but he's like a puppy. He's kind and sweet and loyal. Honestly, I think the problem is me."
"How so?"
"I yell at him. I call him a doofus. My family's all fucked up. My dad's in jail. Mom can't walk and is doing her best to make ends meet. My sister won't even show up to my wedding! Like, I'm just so messed up. I-I'm scared he's just settling and can do so much better," Artemis started to sniffle.
"Well, if that's how ya really feel, maybe you should call this wedding off."
'Huh? What?"
"Yea. I mean clearly you have no self-esteem. You're in a tough situation and deserve to be miserable. Wally can do better."
"Now wait just a minute, you bitch! How dare you…..Ohhhh I get it now."
"Heh glad to see I was right about you being smart."
"Yea."
"Listen, I'm guessing that puppy dog of a groom proposed to you, yea?"
"Yea."
"And you haven't been keeping secrets from him?"
"No. He knows everything about me and my family."
"And he still proposed. That probably means he loves you, baggage and all. He sounds better than like half the guys on this planet. Trust me."
"You slept with half the guys on this planet?"
"Shut up! Not remotely what I meant!"
"Hehehe."
"Look, Artemis. I don't know you or Wally very well. But something tells me you both love each other very much. He's out there burning a hole in the grass because he's worried about you. You're worried you're not good enough for him. You both think of each other. I think you're going to be ok. And if not, you'll work though it. Kinda what a marriage is supposed to be."
"Y-yea. I guess you're right."
"One thing to know about me: I'm always right."
"Sureeee."
"But really, I'm not going to force you to do anything. If you don't feel ready to get married, it's ok. If you want to get this party started, I'll help you with that too."
"Thanks. I really appreciate it."
"Sure. Now, what'll it be?"
"I need to get ready to get married! I just need to use the bathroom really quick."
"Ok. Sounds good. I'll be here, and we'll salvage your makeup ASAP!"
Artemis got up and wiped any remaining tears off her face. Quickly she scurried to the nearby bathroom leaving Zatanna all alone in the dressing room. Now by herself, she dropped her smile and let out a tiny frown.
"Sigh. I'm such a hypocrite…"
Hours later, Artemis and Wally said their "I do's" and the guests were ready to drink, eat, and party. The lights were dimmed to let the disco ball shine all across the dance floor. Music was blaring through the speakers as all the guests jumped, flopped, and twisted. Zatanna really wasn't much of a dancer, but watching inebriated folks make fools of themselves was a treat. All the groomsmen picked up Wally and kept tossing him in the air which elicited a chuckle out of Zatanna. Soon, a slow song came on and couples started pairing off to dance. A few guys had come up to her offering their hand, but she politely declined. One last guy decided to try his luck.
"Hey," Dick smiled wiping his brow a bit.
He was a tad sweaty but that was no surprise as he partook in numerous dance numbers. His tie was off and probably lost somewhere. His shirt was unbuttoned, and his sleeves rolled up. Oddly, he looked like he did in Vegas when he and Zatanna first met. It was a sweet memory.
"Having fun?" Zatanna asked.
"Yes. You?"
"Honestly, yea. You guys are kinda wild. Also, you weren't kidding about bottomless pit. Why does food keep coming out and how does Wally still keep eating?"
"Wally can eat the food supply of a small village," Dick joked as he sat down next to her.
"So I see."
"Are you hungry? I can grab a chicken biscuit for you?"
"No thank you. I'm vegetarian."
"Oh. Sorry."
"Nah. Don't sweat it. Although you're sweating enough as it is."
"Right. Sorry."
They sat and just let the music play around them. There were a few couples holding each other and swaying while others took the opportunity to rest. It was a soft ballad. It let everyone compose their thoughts for a bit.
She walks away,
Colors fade to grey,
Every precious moment's now a waste…
"Thank you by the way," he started.
"Hmm?"
"For helping Artemis. She gives off an air of confidence, but inside she feels as if she can't measure up to everyone else. I don't think she realizes how much she means to Wally."
"I mean I just didn't want to miss out on the reception," she teased.
"Haha, Right. And miss out on all the honey chicken biscuits."
"Again. Vegetarian," she nudged his elbow."
"Right."
She hits the gas,
Hoping it would past,
But the red light starts to flash,
It's time to wait…
"Hey, do you wanna dance?" he asked extending his hand.
"Huh?"
"Do you wanna dance? I just need to grab a towel real quick and I'll guide you to the dance floor."
"I uh…"
Despite the room being dimly lit, Zatanna could see Dick so clearly. His bright blue eyes cut through all the darkness. The sincerity. The kindness. They were so piercingly blue. They were drawing her in like a moth to a flame. Again, her mind was screaming at her to keep her distance. Don't let him in. Don't let him get inside of your head. But for some reason, those voices were just fading away.
And the black keys,
Never looked so beautiful,
And a perfect rainbow never seemed so dull…
"Yes," she finally answered.
"O-ok. Cool. Let me find a towel."
"No!" she grabbed his arm," I-it's ok."
"Uhhh Zee, I'm drenched and nasty and…"
"It's fine," she earnestly smiled brushing past the sudden new nickname of hers.
Though perplexed, Dick shrugged and took her hand. They walked out together side by side before reaching the hard wood of the dance floor. Turning to face each other, Zatanna placed her hands on his shoulders while he grasped her waist. Slowly they began to sway to the beat.
And the lights out,
Never had this bright a glow,
And the black keys,
Are showing me a world I never knew…
It was a little awkward at first. It felt like a middle school slow dance. Arms were extended to leave the holy spirit in the middle. Every bone in her body told her she shouldn't be doing this. She didn't want to hurt him. But her heart wanted this. She wanted this so badly. Against her instincts, she pulled him closer. He followed. She rested her head on his chest as he gripped her waist tighter. A mixture of sweat and cologne whelmed her nose. It wasn't great, but it was unique. It smelled like…Dick Grayson. They continued to sway back and forth as the song played around them. However, to Dick and Zatanna, the music was fading. There weren't any other guests. They weren't even at a wedding. They were just dancing together in a little void. Just Dick and Zatanna. The little cricket in her mind still tried to tell her that this was bad. She shouldn't be doing this again. But…
The black keys,
Never looked so beautiful…
Zatanna looked up to meet his eyes. He was smiling, just happy to be there, but wanted something more. She did too. He leaned down while she lifted her chin up. Slowly, gently, their lips just barely coming together, reaching out for the other…
Things were moving so fast. Everything was spinning and flashing by like a blur. Zatanna didn't even remember the tail end of the reception. As soon as Artemis tossed her bouquet, Dick and Zatanna practically ran out of the venue and found their way back to the hotel everyone was staying at. Once the room key cleared, they were on each other like lions in heat. Brusing wet kisses kept stoking and sparking the fire within them. The door slammed shut as Dick pressed Zatanna against the wall. She gripped the back of his head tightly pressing her lips onto his. Her body moved without even thinking as she lifted her left leg for him to catch. His hands squeezed her thigh sending electric shocks all through her body. Deftly, she began undoing his shirt buttons.
"Get me out of this dress," she panted.
"You hate it that much?"
"Green is so not my color," she peppered his neck with kisses.
Soon, he picked her up letting her legs wrap around his waist. She felt light, like a feather to him as he carried her to the bed. Gently, he set her down and grabbed the hem of her skirt. In one fell swoop, he pulled the dress over her head leaving her in just her bra and panties. Wasting no time, she unbuckled his belt and unzipped his pants. Helping her, Dick pulled his shirt off and pushed her onto the bed. More kisses ensued as they couldn't keep their hands off each other. She could feel something poking at her thigh, and it excited her. With the swift hands that wrote his number on her card so long ago in Vegas, Dick unclasped her bra and tossed it aside. He kissed her neck and lovingly nipped at a spot while squeezing her breasts tightly. Zatanna couldn't help but moan.
"Sorry," he whispered.
"For what?" she panted.
"I might've left a mark," he licked the spot he bit.
"Don't stop…" she pleaded.
Given the green light, he continued leaving feather kisses on every spot of skin he could find. Her cheek. Her lips. Her neck. The top of her breast. Her nipple. All the way down her abdomen and navel. He rested his chin on her stomach looking at her, silently asking if it was ok to keep going. She nodded, lifting her hips up to help him proceed.
"You're so beautiful," he smiled as he pulled her panties off.
For a moment, Zatanna felt shy. She closed her legs and crossed her arms. It wasn't her first time, but Dick was supposed to be a friend, just a friend. But those eyes. Those eyes that were somehow telling her it was ok to stop but also pleading with her to keep going. To hell with worry. It had been forever since a man touched her like this. Her legs relaxed as she shyly nodded. Taking it slow, Dick kissed the inside of her thigh leaving a trail of fire as he made his way to her center. She was wetter than she thought. Almost dripping. Testing the waters, he gave her one long lick. His tongue practically made her jump. Smirking, he buried his face into her moist center and got right to work. Zatanna jerked her head back and gripped the sheets as Dick's tongue explored her insides. She couldn't believe how quickly he bent her to his will. She was practically putty as he licked her up and down, sticking his tongue deep inside her walls. Her legs wanted to collapse and trap his head, but his strong hands kept them at bay. Eventually, her hands moved up and grasped the back of his head. Handfuls of hair became clenched in her fingers as he pressed on. Soon, he found his way to her little bundle of nerves. Without warning, he suckled on her clit causing her to scream as loud as she could.
"ahhh ahhh AHHHHH."
"Shhhh," he looked up while his tongue drew circles around her clit to tease her, "These walls probably aren't very thick."
"Shut up," she panted, "It's your fault anyway."
"Good."
Smirking again, he crawled up but not before sticking two fingers inside her. Zatanna tensed up again as he pumped his fingers gently in and out. Not wanting to completely lose her leverage, she shoved her hand down his boxers and gripped his throbbing cock. She paused for a moment, realizing how big it was in her hands, but her resolve quickly took over. She stroked it up and down causing Dick to grunt slightly. Got him…
"It seems we are at an impasse, Mr. Grayson," she purred rubbing her thumb over his tip and spreading his precum all over.
"It seems so, Ms. Zatara," he growled rubbing his thumb over her clit.
"Maybe we can find a way for both of us to enjoy ourselves?" she raised an eyebrow and bit her lip.
"I can agree to that."
With some help, Dick tossed his boxers aside and climbed on top of Zatanna. They were so close she could practically feel his breath mixing with hers. Her nipples brushed with his as he peppered her with more kisses. The tip of his member rubbed gently against her dripping pussy. He was teasing her, agonizing her.
"Dick, please. Fuck me," she whined cupping his face.
Slowly, he pushed his way in. Zatanna gasped finally feeling the full girth of his cock. But he was slow and gentle. He kissed her again and again slowly pushing in inch by inch. Zatanna trembled at just how deep he was. She could feel herself pulsing as Dick moved further and further.
"Are you ok?" he asked while pressing his nose to her ear.
"Y-yess. God you feel so good."
"Good. You're so tight. And warm."
"Dick…please move. Fuck me."
When he was all the way to the hilt, Dick slowly pulled back only to gently thrust in. Long languid strokes kept her pleased. More and more of her cum coated his cock acting as lubricant for the two. As he pushed inward, she could feel his tip just gently tapping her spot. He felt so good. He made her feel so full. But she could tell that he was straining. He wanted more. And frankly, so did she.
"Harder," she gasped out, "Faster, Dick. Please…"
Nodding, Dick picked up the pace. Shorter strokes but with added power. He wasn't holding back anymore. The bed creaked back and forth as he rammed into her. Gentle tapping became firm pounding as Zatanna couldn't help herself.
"Yes. Yes. Yesyes YES!" she moaned as she came again and again.
Her legs moved by themselves, clasping around his waist. Her ankles locked themselves into place as she pressed him closer to her. He hugged and held her tightly while she did the same. Faces pressed cheek to cheek, they fucked and made love for what felt like an eternity. Tears fell down Zatanna's face and her orgasm rocked her body. His rhythm was perfect. His tip kept hitting the right spot every single time. Her eyes closed as she wished for this moment to just keep going forever. But soon, she could feel him tensing up and straining. He was twitching inside her.
"Dick. Dick," she tapped the back of his neck to get his attention, "Dick, come inside me."
"W-what?"
"Trust me. I'm ok. Just come inside me. Let it all out."
Not really thinking clearly, Dick worked purely on instinct. He kept thrusting and thrusting until finally, he just couldn't hold it anymore. He pushed all the way to the base as Zatanna's wall clamped down on him. Suddenly, she felt immense warmth as Dick came deep inside her. Her own thighs clamped around him, ensuring that he was right where he needed to be. Soon, his shoulders relaxed, and Zatanna uncrossed her legs. He pushed off slightly so he could see her face. Sweat was dripping down his face, but those eyes were still so brightly blue. They didn't say a word. They simply kissed and held each other.
The next morning, Zatanna felt so groggy and sore. She was lying on her side and opened her eyes just slightly to see the digital clock on the end table. It was 9:40 in the morning. No doubt Dick already left. Knowing him though, Zatanna figured Dick paid for the room and allowed her a late checkout. Dick wasn't like the other guys she'd hooked up with in the past. Although, she couldn't even remember the last guy who made her come like he did. In fact, she didn't even remember the last time she had sex….And that's when it hit her.
Don't get involved. Memorable but forgettable. Dick was just supposed to be a coffee friend. Someone she could chat with and then forget about. How was she supposed to face him when they had sex four times last night?! But then again, he was already gone. Maybe he also didn't harbor any deeper feelings. This was just a hook-up, right? Nothing more. Such worrying thoughts kept her from falling back to sleep, but she was still so exhausted that she happily remained under the covers. However…
"Mmm…" something rustled behind her.
Before Zatanna knew it, a strong arm wrapped itself around her waist. She could feel warm skin behind her. This couldn't be right. He was still here?!
"Mmmm," he hummed again.
If Zatanna was groggy and half-asleep before, she was wide awake now with Dick pressing his face into her hair and breathing over her shoulder. Worry turned to confusion as she couldn't piece together why he was still here. This wasn't how hook-ups at weddings went? Groomsman and bridesmaid go to bed and then pretend like nothing happened the next morning. Then why was Dick Grayson still here in bed with her? Was….was he cuddling her?!
"You're so tense," he whispered in her ear, "We don't have to check-out until noon."
"S-sorry. I just…didn't expect you to still be here."
"Hmm? And why's that?" he asked lightly tapping her stomach with his fingertips.
"I-I dunno. I thought that's how these things usually go."
"Please. I'm better than that," he kissed her shoulder while drawing little circles on her abdomen.
He could still feel uneasiness emanating from her. So, he stopped his light teasing and simply held her.
"Is everything ok?" he asked.
"Y-yes. I just…um?"
"D-do you regret last night?"
"NO! No no no of course not!" she hurriedly turned around to face him. "Last night was amazing. Incredible. I-it's me."
"What do you mean?"
"W-where do we go from here? I'm kind of…scared."
"I really like you, Zee."
"D-Dick?"
"I think you're beautiful, funny, witty. I just want to be around you. I feel so happy when I'm around you."
"I-uh…"
"I like the way you scrunch your nose when your tea doesn't have enough milk. Or when you're so deep in thought, you don't even notice that I took your phone and snuck a selfie in."
"That was you!?"
"Hehe. I like us being together, Zee. I like being with you…"
"I feel the same way," she blurted without thinking.
She froze for a minute trying to remember all her rules. Forgettable but memorable. No wait that wasn't in. Don't get involved. Keep your distance. Don't hurt him…
"Can we keep this going then?" he asked.
"Huh?"
"Can we…be more than just a coffee chat between friends?"
One look at his eyes gave her the only answer she needed.
"Yes."
Something changed the moment Zatanna slept with Dick Grayson. Color seemed to fill her life more. Her creative juices flowed more freely as she concocted more acts to add to her show. Dick somehow inspired her to burn silk and make doves fly out of thin air. Or hide people's cards in ballons. She even brought back rabbits and made a game of having kids in the audience pull them from hats. Business boomed as her show shot up in popularity. And Dick came to every one of her sets.
Their coffee meetups became getting coffee together. At this point, one was always spending the night at the other's apartment. Zatanna had her own toothbrush at his place while he had a few sweatpants and t-shirts at hers. So, every morning, after some activities, they'd go out and get coffee together. Then she'd go rehearse for her show while he'd go to work at the police station. It was bliss. For the first time in what felt like forever, she was happy. She hadn't been this happy in a long time. Not since…
"Hey," he whispered while kissing her forehead.
"Hmm?"
"You seemed lost. Everything ok?"
"Yes. Perfect," she kissed him.
She shifted in bed so that her legs could tangle with his. Her arms wrapped around his neck while he held her waist. They were sweaty and warm, but she didn't care. Skin-to-skin contact and cuddling was exactly what she wanted after yet another round of fantastic sex.
"Did you have a good show today?" he asked shifting on his pillow a bit.
"I'd say so. Thank you, by the way, for the idea of turning fish into bunnies. It was a hit."
"Happy to help my girl in any way."
"You're too sweet," she blushed, "How was your day?"
"Slow. Only case we had was someone trying to deface police cars. Nothing too complicated."
"Hmm."
She leaned forward and rested against his chest. His heart thumped steadily as she closed her eyes to the relaxing rhythm. He held her close kissing the top of her head.
"So…" he awkwardly started.
"Hmm?"
"Bruce tells me he's hoping to renew your contract, to keep you in Gotham a little longer."
"Oh…"
"I don't want to push, but…do you want to stay? In Gotham?"
"I-I don't know just yet," she let out a breath, "It'd be a change for me."
"I get it. I was a circus performer, remember? Settling in one place feels different compared to moving from city to city."
"Yea…"
"But you'd be staying here…with me," he pleaded his case.
"That I would…"
"Is that so bad?" he frowned while playing with her hair.
"No. No it wouldn't," she sighed drawing lazy circles on his chest.
"Y'know…"
"Hmm?"
"If you renew your contract, maybe you could also…"
"Also…what?"
"…Move in with me?"
"D-Dick?"
"Or I could move in with you or something. A-assuming you like your apartment better? Or prefer being closer to your show. I don't mind the longer commute to the station. I just feel like I mean I kinda want to take this further and…"
*RING RING RING*
"Ah shit…" he groaned rolling out of bed.
Zatanna breathed a sigh of relief as Dick answered his phone. In all honesty, she wouldn't mind staying in Gotham and moving in with Dick. However, things were starting to get too close. Dick was a sweet sweet guy. He was so smart, and funny. And he treated her like a queen constantly. Every time she saw him, a warm fuzzy feeling permeating from her heart all over her body. Zatanna knew every little intricacy of Dick such as how bright his smile was when he solved a case, or how much he laughed when he teased her, or how his brow furrowed when emergency police business came about...kinda like now.
"Uh huh. And we're sure he's there? Tonight only? Ok, I'm on my way."
"Ooof. Furrowed brow and scrunched up nose. This is serious," Zatanna commented.
"Yea. We've been tracking Rupert Thorn for months. We know he's the head of a big crime family here in Gotham, but we can't get anything to stick."
"I see. I'm guessing there's some big sting operation tonight then?"
"Something like that. I'm sorry to hit and run but…"
"I understand. Duty calls."
"Thank you. You're welcome to stay. You know your way around my kitchen anyway."
"That I do."
"Great. I love you," he kissed her before scrambling for his clothes and rushing out the door.
Zatanna meanwhile just froze. Her eyes were wide. Her throat was dry. Love? Love? LOVE!? This had gone way too far. Memorable but forgettable. How could she let this go on far too long? This went against all her rules. All her limitations. She kept her distance because she knew that anyone who got close to her would just get hurt. It wasn't her fault she was stuck like this. She didn't want this pain this….curse.
She got up from the bed and walked to the window. The apartment wasn't a penthouse, but it was high enough to see all the bright lights of Gotham flickering and shimmering. Zatanna's heart was pounding. The thought of Dick Grayson excited her. When she looked him in the eyes, she could almost catch a glimpse of heaven, of paradise. He made her the happiest she'd been in decades. But she knew this wouldn't last long. She'd knew he'd only get hurt. Or was she more worried about feeling this pain again? She didn't want to do it. But she had no choice. She was dancing on the edge, far closer than she'd ever been. If Zatanna stayed here in Gotham, with Dick, she'd take it too far.
"But I lo-"
It was five in the morning. The sun hadn't even come up yet. The highways were completely barren. Practically no traffic. Perfect. She needed to avoid the morning rush hour anyway.
It was too late in the night to book a flight or get bus tickets. Plus, buying those forced her to pick a destination. Right now, she wasn't sure where she needed to go. So the next best thing was to take a car and run. It wasn't hard to procure. The more worrying aspect was how long it would take for the spell to run out and revert the Porsche back into a die-cast Hot Wheels toy. But again, Zatanna's mind was on different matters.
She didn't want to leave like that. She knew there needed to at least be a proper goodbye. But Zatanna couldn't bear the thought of seeing those blue eyes cry. It absolutely messed with her mind how she messed with his heart. Zatanna knew better. She knew that she was no good. She had a burden to bear was forced to bear it alone.
*RING RING RING*
She saw him calling. Her phone lit up the darkened car cabin. She so desperately wanted to pick up, but she knew she couldn't. Instead, Zatanna pushed her foot on the gas and kept the wheels rolling. Normally she knew when to leave the party behind. In the past Zatanna never cared if people noticed. However, given her predicament, her burden, her curse, she'd rather be lonely than wrapped around his arms.
"I'm sorry, Dick. I have to leave before you love me…"
AN: Leave Before You Love Me - Jonas Brothers ft. Marshmellow
Ok yes I know I know. Yet ANOTHER Jonas Brothers song. They make BANGERS. I can't help it.
It's been a while since I've updated the Playlist. Good news for you folks, this chapter is part 1 of a 3 part saga.
I've recently been sorta encouraged by the sudden wave of Chalant coming through thanks to the efforts of writers on AO3 like

I've had the idea for this saga in my head for a while now, so I finally put pen to paper and got this down. I'm sorry if it's such a beast of a chapter in terms of length. The next 2 I don't think will be as big as I don't need as much set up as I did in this first part.
I hope you all enjoyed it! How to Be Chalant will take a hot minute as I need to kinda get back into the swing of things. But thank you so much to all those who still follow my flagship fic!
