Chapter 64: Sleeping Beauty

She was running. The sounds of her bated breath lost amidst the shower of sparks and bullet hell that she found herself in. Her head throbbed painfully as she tried her best to focus on survival.

It paled in comparison to her fear, however. Fear as she simply ran from the noises, the chaos. From cover to cover, not even looking at the battlefield.

Chips continued to flake off of the flimsy stone-marble cover Yang used to shield herself from the onslaught of relentless attacks. Some were the size of peanuts, some were as big as her fist. This was nothing like any of the training she had done, and this was certainly nothing like what they were told it would be like.

And to think she was still in Remnant. It was unimaginable. She never imagined in her dreams that there would be a place like this in Remnant. Or that a place would be reduced to this.

"Easy there" said her companion with a soft tone. "It's fine, they're gone now"

The warm, welcoming embrace snapped her out of her panic, as she slowly looked up to see Nelliel's battered but kind face looking down on her.

Yang couldn't help but quickly turn away guiltily. Some partner she was, running away at the first sign of trouble while the teal haired Arrancar faced the brunt of the enemy forces. She hated the trembling in her hands, the shivers passing through her body as the memory of what she saw was still fresh on her mind. Her eyes shut on their own once again.

Nelliel seemed to sense her thoughts. "It's not a pretty sight, true" she said, "I imagine you've never seen a sorry sight like this, have you?"

Yang shook her head.

"Do you need to rest?" asked Nel.

Yang shook her head again, vigorously this time, as though the notion itself was unacceptable.

"Sorry..I..I kinda lost it when I saw all those…people" she stuttered, almost swallowing the last few words.

"Well, that's natural of course" replied Nel "Corpses and fallen soldiers will be a given, especially at a war like this. As macabre as it sounds, you'll get used to it. Humans always do, given enough time"

More noises of gunfire, flying reishi blasts and growls from Grimm-hybrids, hollows, and Quincies screaming and roaring commands interrupted their thoughts once more, and the two dashed from cover to cover again, occasionally dispatching the stray blast or two that headed their way.

"You're not scared?" asked Yang. "...what am I saying, you've probably seen all this to the point that nothing affects you huh?"

"I wouldn't say I like seeing this, but you could say I've grown numb to it. And besides, for a human, you're doing quite well. As a hollow, I simply have a different perspective compared to you. It helps, if anything" answered Nel.

"Just like Ruby, isn't it?" asked Yang again, finishing her previous sentence.

Nel let out a minuscule, uneasy gasp, silence ensuing between the two. The teal haired Arrancar could see her young partner's grimace.

"I wouldn't do that if I were you" sighed Nel. "I don't think it's fair to compare yourself or even myself to your sister. Essentially….her soul right now is that of a hollow. She may have her human body returned to her by the Gods, but on the inside, she's still a hollow. And she's lived that way for many years now. And she's gone through a LOT of things both you and me havent. In fact, my own 'warped' perspective, as you may put it, is still vastly different from her own. She's simply far too different from you and me for us to compare ourselves to her. It would be akin to comparing an apple to a bookcase. They might have had some common root way, way back, like a tree, but what they are in the end simply cannot be compared"

However, those words brought no solace to the Blonde Brawler and did the opposite.

"Regardless, you looked rather..ahem, smashing when you were beating those hybrid Grimm to mince meat with a wild grin on your face. I almost mistook you for Grimmjow's little sister. Now that would be a scene to see" chuckled Nel softly, caressing Yang's head.

"Yeah but….but..! But! That was before….." she protested, looking away. "Before the Quincy guys came and….things just went to Hell….."

"Shhh shh shh….wait, I hear something." she alerted, looking around cautiously. In the distance, she could see two of the Quincy generals, who were ranked just below the Sternritter approaching in their direction, but were quickly distracted by two massive horned Togabito-Grimm hybrids who instantly engaged with them in combat.

The two then quickly moved away from the commotion, led by Nel.

"If it's any consolation" said her green-teal haired companion. "This is the first time in the many centuries I've been alive that an Arrancar like me has to take it slow and steady rather than fight out in the open. This is more like the war you humans fight. How strange, considering that none of the participants of this war are fully human, and yet, we're still fighting like them"

She managed to return a cero blast in retaliation, taking out a small group of Grimm-togabito hybrids, but she knew the longer this dragged on, the more her reishi reserves would deplete. Naturally she could consume some of the Grimm to replenish herself, but they were also unlike regular hollows that she could use as a source of energy. She didn't want to find out the repercussions of taking in alien spirit energy, especially one as stagnant and potent as hell reishi in the middle of the battlefield. And in this battlefield of endurance, even small injuries mattered. It was surprising how sheer numbers dictated how one needed to change fighting styles.

Not to mention the fact the feeling of distaste just looking at some of those things left her. Szayelaporro's worst nightmares would fit right at home alongside whatever it was she was fighting. She'd even observed some of the hollows stay clear of some of them.

Her words of advice to Yang had been for herself as well. In her eyes, the poor thing was already struggling to keep up pace. This was the last thing Yang needed. All of the enemies Yang had defeated had been hollow-like Grimm at most.

There was one time Yang came up close to…whatever that thing was. It looked somewhat like an Asauchi, but had a vertical, wide eye where its mouth was supposed to be, and two misaligned mouths where the eye sockets were meant to be. Yang shuddered when she remembered the primal disgust she felt for that thing. If it hadn't been for Nel…

The thought just made her angry. Her fear, her cowardice, and the fact that she was practically being carried by Nel.

They came in many varieties, carrying ancient and modern weapons alike, all of which functioned nothing like the weapons that humans carried. But more than anything, the putrid reishi it gave out left a nasty taste on Nel's mouth, as though her hollow instincts were screaming at her to get away.

Yang supported Nel, angrily firing off massive fiery blasts from her trusty Ember Celica, which, after the new 'improvements', felt like a part of herself, a part of her soul that she never realized existed. Ruby's words about weapons and souls came to her mind, back when they were still new to Beacon Academy, and she was nothing more than a carefree brat from the boonies.

That felt like such a long time ago.

She took out some of the smaller approaching Grimm hybrids and deterred some of the Quincy firing at them from afar.

Another horde approached them, and Yang was just about to blast them to kingdom come, before Nel stopped her.

"You were thinking about..going all out, weren't you?" asked Nel, to which the blonde nodded.

"I wouldn't suggest that. It's very powerful, that skill of yours. Combined with your 'semblance', I don't think most will survive if they took it head on. But it also burns through your spirit energy and leaves you completely open. It's not something you should use unless someone else is covering and supporting you. Even if I'm here, right now it's just wasteful. Let's do this instead" she proposed, jumping into the open.

Artfully moving around some of the projectiles, she drew the attention of some of the Togabito hybrids, and had them friendly fire upon each other. She then moved about some of the Quincy arrows that came her direction, before using Sonido to disappear, which caused more friendly fire amongst the Grimm hybrids and the Quincy. But not before she was struck twice. Once in her head, and another shot aimed at her belly. Both of them precisely aimed Quincy arrows. The teal haired arrancar doubled over, but held firm when she realized no more projectiles came her way. Satisfied, she retreated back to Yang.

"Damn, they got to you…and you were so fast too.." asked Yang, worried.

Nel waved her hand, seemingly not bothered. "Yes. But atleast we fully conserved our spirit energies. Can't be faltering over such trivial injuries. And besides, there's no avoiding those instant hit reishi bullets from the Togabito, unless you can predict them by reading their body language. It's not too different from Balas that we Arrancars and Hollows can use. They aren't too bad though, especially given the Hierro that we Arrancars have. Quincy arrows however….urgh. For now, let's find a safe spot to camp"

They dashed from cover to cover; Nel using her sonido and Yang using a movement step similar to a Soul Reaper's shunpo but in Yang's eyes, it was all the same. Instantaneous movement by focusing aura/spirit energy on one's feet. It was the skill that took her the longest to learn.

While the two had initially planned to act individually and help one another out if they happened to meet at the battlefield, Yang couldn't help but follow the teal haired Arrancar's steps.

"Conserve your Spirit energy…aura I mean. Those moves were something that Ruby taught me. Of course, unlike her, I'm nowhere near as good as her, as you can tell. In that regard, you folks from Remnant can move around a lot better than we do. But I'm sure she didn't have it easy when she first started out in Hell. Our only solace is that this isn't Hell itself, but it comes close enough. Opponents are numerous, and unlike me, you won't be able to replenish yours. How are you feeling?" she asked.

Yang felt a pang of guilt, her eyes averting themselves. A rather large trickle of blood ran down Nel's teal-colored bangs, dying them a shade of crimson. It had been a while since Nel got that wound, and while she wasn't fully aware of Arrancar anatomy, she knew a constantly bleeding wound was never a good thing. It was guilt arising from her own inability to take care of herself forcing Nel to babysit her. Even when the teal haired Arrancar would be quick to deny it, Yang knew this was true.

"Nasty stuff, those hybrids" she said, ducking to avoid another projectile. "But a Quincy attack is just as bad for me as an attack from a Hollow on a Quincy. Normally healing a wound of this level would've been easy. Now….I feel my strength fading a bit after bit. It doesn't help that I can't even see some of them. I wonder if this is what you feel when facing against gun-fire"

"Well..yeah, normally you're not dodging bullets. That sort of thing only happens in movies. Some of you are so unfair that it pisses me off too" she huffed, to which Nel couldn't help but chuckle. "Hey Nel…uhm…you know, if it's easier, maybe you should just ditch me here and go take care of that wound, I can handle myself you-"

But Nel pinched Yang's mouth before she could finish her sentence. "Getting cold feet already? This isn't the high spirited Yang that I know. If you falter this early, that will be more of a burden than your lack of combat abilities you know. And let me tell you that you're definitely not weak. It's simply this situation, and your inexperience fighting such large groups in such open areas as opposed to a one-on-one. So…just stick close to me and be your usual, hot headed adorable self. It helps me more than you think"

Yang's cheeks flushed with embarrassment. "Geez, don't you start babying me too. Ruby does that enough already. Urgh, if only I was a bit older I would teach that damn brat a lesson in humility too"

"You ARE older" pointed out Nel amused, to which Yang could only pout. "Atleast biologically I suppose, after she got her human body back. Or was she the same age as you now?" she wondered. "Anyway, I think we both can agree that at this point, 'age' simply doesn't apply to her, does it? It's true that she's mentally more mature than you are, but hey, that goes for me too. I don't consider myself older than she is, not after her experiences"

There was an odd silence following that statement, and Nel could sense the discomfort in Yang's body language.

It surprised Yang to think how quickly she had warmed up to Nel in the days following Kyouka's 'initiation'. It hadn't taken long for them to get their own training partners to improve and get used to their new abilities and selves. Naturally everyone trained against everyone else, though some were given more time with particular training partners who best suited each one's individual abilities. In that regard, Mila-Rose, Yoruichi and Nel had been the ones to spend most time with the Blonde Brawler, followed by some rather fun girl's night outs with Tatsuki and Nora (some of which Yoruichi would invite herself too, for some 'extra' fun).

Tatsuki, Nora and Yang really hit it off quite well, given the similar nature of their abilities and free spirited natures. While Yang had been something of a big sister to the ones in team RWBY, atleast before all the madness started, Tatsuki was the first one amongst everyone she had ever come across that Yang could connect with on the same level, as an equal.

And Tatsuki was just as glad to find another female friend apart from Orihime with whom she could spend some quality time talking and discussing things. Not that Tatsuki minded being around boys in general, but considering that she never really had any other company her age apart from Orihime for girls talk, this was a rather welcome change, especially since they had a lot of things in common. Not just for herself, but also because through their connection, Orihime too had some more company alongside Nora.

But Nel was different. While her own 'younger' sister currently felt cold, distant and alien to her, Nel was a bundle of warm, comforting and welcoming presence, especially in the current time. She was strong, reliable and mature, things that Yang looked up to. Almost like an older sister to herself, a role model that she had once aspired to be to Ruby. A chance that Yang had forever lost, ever since 'Ruby' returned from Earth. It was as though Nel healed and soothed the unspoken grievances in her heart, ones that she could never talk about openly to Ruby.

"Would be nice if we could meet up with the others,"said Yang. "Hey…you think the others are fine?"

Nel nodded. "Even if they aren't, we can't afford to worry about them until the end of the day. WE can only focus on our own survival and hope that the rest return by dusk. Anyway, this should be a good spot to camp out and wait a while. I had those hybrid Grimm infight amongst each other, and they're a large group. We should have atleast 10 minutes to rest. Take the time to hydrate yourself or refresh your reserves. After this, we'll be pushing through to the next base camp"

"It seems some rats are still scurrying around"

An intense wave of fire passed right over Yang and Nel's heads. Yang ducked further while Nel Sonido-ed to the side, facing her opponent up front. A confident smirk appeared on the face of the woman looking at Nel.

Without wasting a second, Nel spun around and fired off consecutive balas, maintaining her attention at the woman while at the same time trying to divert the woman's focus away from Yang. Just from reading the woman's spirit energy, she knew this confrontation was not going to be quick and that she was no ally.

But the woman was hardly caught off guard, retaliating just as fiercely all while maintaining a calm and confident demeanor. Yang recognized the woman from the time Ruby singled her out during one of their training classes in front of the entire audience, along with her two confidants.

Cinder Fall, noted Yang mentally.

Unlike that time however, Cinder was dressed in a white uniform with a small white hat, similar to the other Quincy soldiers she had seen. There were some blue lines and insignias on her uniform that were not present on the other lower level officers however, indicating that she was clearly a few ranks above the ones they had encountered.

Yang jumped right into action, seeing Nel take on the brunt of her attacks, much to the teal haired Arrancar's dismay. And Cinder too didn't waste any time, switching instantly to the 'weaker' target, sending a flurry of razor sharp, searing hot blades of glass, which Yang immediately retaliated, blowing everything in front of her to powder and smoke.

A little back and forth ensured between the two, with Cinder pressing forward with visible confidence, but Yang was putting up a much more difficult fight than Cinder initially anticipated. But even so, it was evident she was the one being pressured.

"Ugh!"

Cinder winced when one of the blasts from Yang's fists hit her squarely in the shoulder, turning her smile upside down. With a snarl, she conjured a flurry of crystalline shards from multiple directions centered around her, except this time, something was different.

The blonde brawler screamed in agony, as a searing hot pain shot up her head from her left eye, but the air surrounding her skin felt cold.

When she opened her eye, she could see half her vision was dark, and there were crystalline white shards of ice around her, frosty air dissipating from them. But more importantly, taking up the other half of her vision was Nel, her body sporting several dark bruises where the shards had impacted, but failed to fully penetrate her Hierro.

Cinder's smile faded a little, and Nel could feel a sense of displeasure in her demeanor as they exchanged blows without faltering for a second. Cinder was clearly trying to follow up after her failed attempt to kill Yang, while Nel was tanking and retaliating blow to blow, protecting the bewildered young brawler. Flames and powdery ice flying off in every direction. Cinder's command of both elements was impressive. And they were precise and deadly. It explained how the once-chaotic battlefield went silent the moment she arrived.

She had to admit that for a human emitting Quincy like reishi, she was quite formidable. This human was holding her own against an Espada, even if Nel was tired and taking labored breaths from injuries.

A fact that Yang too, could observe. The sight of Nel covering for her, taking labored breaths, flinching and wincing from the pain of her injuries hurt far more than her own injured eye.

But as with everything, decisive moments happen in the blink of an eye, especially in a chaotic setting such as a warfield. Red filled Yang's vision, followed by the sick, wet sound of something sharp piercing flesh.

A large glass shard was protruding out of the outer edge of Nel's belly, while Nel's lance pierced through Cinder's shoulder, effectively rendering her right arm useless.

Both women had expressions of pain, with Cinder having an additional expression of rage. It was clear given the extent of their injuries who had the upper hand.

"Let's say we leave things at that for the moment, shall we?" suggested Nel, in a voice lower than usual. "None of us are capable of fighting. And it's nearly twilight. You should know what that means"

Cinder merely glared, and with a pained motion, she waved her free arm, conjuring up a crackling lightning bolt that headed straight towards an injured Yang, who was too taken aback and too slow to even raise her hands to protect herself.

A swift blur blocked her vision, and she could hear the sound of metal striking something solid, shattering something crystalline. A mix of red and black filled her sight in place of Cinder. And on her shoulder, she was carrying something that looked human sized covered in robes. And in between Cinder and the new arrival was a familiar looking katana with a purple blade embedded into the ground. No doubt it had absorbed the incoming attack, evident from the crackles coming off the purple blade.

Even by just looking at the back, she recognized her savior all too well.

Cinder glared, displeased even more than she had been with Nel or Yang. "Y-you..! What's the meaning of this..urhg…!" Clearly the wound inflicted by Nel was having its effect on her, far more so that it appeared.

"...Mom….?.." called out Yang.

The figure approached Cinder, sword pointing at her neck. "Enough. It's nearly sunset, and I can take care of anything else you failed to clean up. Get out of my sight"

And right on cue, loud gongs, like that of a church bell, began to toll throughout the skies.

The twilight hour. A time of mandatory retreat as deemed by the gods themselves. In which all parties shall cease fire and return to their own domains, forbidden to return until the break of dawn the following day for the entire duration of the war.

"And now, you can get lost" repeated the figure.

Cinder's expression did not falter, yet even she knew better than to defy such godly principles. With a begrudging, pained expression, Cinder slowly put away her weapons, walking away while clutching her bleeding right shoulder.

"..Mom…?" called out Yang again. Raven Branwen put down the person she was carrying and approached Yang, her expression still stiff and dangerous.

The instant she approached closer however, that expression broke, followed by a moment of shock and worry. She quickened her pace, gritting her teeth. Grabbing her daughter by her shoulders, she asked.

"You really think this is a joke? Even a toddler knows better than to come out to the frontlines with such a pathetic lack of combat ability. You could have died if I didn't interfere, and if she didn't cover for you!" she growled, pointing to the injured Nel. "Weakness is one thing, but making someone else take the…forget it"

Raven continued to hold on to her daughter, and while Yang was initially distraught, angry and nearly in tears, her expression froze when she noticed the shaking coming from Raven's hands as she gripped her. Uncontrollable shaking.

"...Raven, right? I've heard a lot about you from Ruby and Yang. I really appreciate the help. We were definitely in a tight spot. And since you're working with Yhwach, I assume this won't go kindly with the Quincy when you get back. Even so, Yang has never been a liability. I would have died if not for her multiple times. My injuries are limited to this extent simply because of her. And while things were rough, we DID manage to hold out in the end. You have nothing to worry about. Even if something happened, I'll still protect her with my life, and it'll be my choice to do so. And…I don't think it will be long before she surpasses me or the other Espada" said Nel confidently.

Yang gasped slowly, and the tears she was holding back silently started to drip from her eye. Her mind exploded from the number of questions she wanted to ask Raven, but more importantly, she wanted nothing more than to tend to Nel and her injuries, first and foremost.

Raven's grip on her shoulders lightened, and Yang did another double take when she noticed a wavering expression on Raven's face, which came and went as quickly as she saw it. An expression of concern and worry. With her finger, she then traced the injury on her left eye, before shoving something solid in Yang's hands.

"Tch. Fine. Take that and do what you will. It should help with some preliminary first aid. Beyond that, I'd still carefully think about what I told you, Yang. This isn't like one of your Academy combat classes, as you no doubt found out. You have good companions, unlike me. I'd suggest making good use of that to survive this war" she said, turning to leave. "Even if that means not participating in the war at all. There are other ways you can do your part, while being just as valuable as any other going to the frontlines"

"But you have dad, don't you?" retorted Yang in a small voice. "And besides, even if I, uncle Qrow, Ruby and…mom aren't here, we'd still.."

"And when did I ever mention I counted Tai separately?" she replied curtly. "To me, that's what it means to be family. He is my other self, as I am his other self. I don't count your father any differently than myself and…if you mean to protect your sister, Nelliel or any of your other companions, I would suggest you think about what that means" she said.

She then went over to the person she was carrying, picked it up and placed it next to Nel. "Your sister asked me to leave her with one of your lot. How absurd. The corpses here look healthier than your sister does. I thought she would know better. Though, unlike you, it would seem she is more likely to kill herself much before Yhwach or any of the Quincy get to her. At the very least, she has the right idea when it comes to the meaning of 'family', to the point of being detrimental"

"Wh-what do you mean by-!"

But Raven was gone before Yang could complete her sentence. Nelliel slowly unwrapped the cloth covering the person Raven left behind.

"...Blake..!"

The cat Faunus was injured, though not as badly as the two of them. They could hear slow and labored breaths from her.

"She'll be fine" assured Nel. "If anything, we need to head back ourselves and regroup. And both of us need some patching up" she suggested.

She picked herself up, hoisting Blake over her shoulder, and using the supplies Raven left to stop the bleeding on their injuries, though it was a stopgap measure at most.

The silent battlefield left a rather melancholy and empty feeling in Yang's mind as she walked alongside Nel, contemplating her thoughts.

"…."

Yang's thoughts droned out as Ozpin, Unohana and Kisuke/Kyouka discussed the casualties of the day's battles, with fatigue and her own thoughts blackened her mind. It surprised her somewhat to see how nonchalant she was about the whole thing. As Opzin announced the students-turned-quincy-soldiers from the various academies who had died, she didnt even bat an eye. Students whom she shared a place to study and live with not too long ago. She pondered if she would even feel anything even if it was someone she'd briefly seen while at Beacon.

Had she grown that jaded already? It hadn't even felt like the war had been going on for long, and yet to her, she felt as though she had been fighting almost endlessly. Glancing a tired pair of eyes over to her 'siblings' sitting next to her, she saw Karin and Yuzu were already talking about going back to school the next day.

Even though the war between worlds continued in full swing, it still required resources; both in terms of manpower, materials, weapons and so on. Not to mention mental fatigue, physical injuries and so on. Though the denizens from Hell and those of the Hollow-kin could fight a prolonged battle, it meant nothing if the Quincy took days at a time to retreat, recuperate and retaliate. After all, any attempt at storming the Quincy's heavily guarded stronghold was a fool's errand, even for the likes of Galathea with her legion from Hell.

So in the days in between, life would proceed as normal, as people from Remnant and Earth alike still needed a functioning society. Ichigo and Tatsuki for one had never been more grateful for a small semblance of normalcy in their lives, even if Ichigo would sometimes have to put up with his elder 'sister' coming over to school to 'have some fun' as Yang put it.

Naturally no one, especially Isshin, would have allowed kids like the Kurosaki twins to take part in such a full blown war. Even in Remnant, children were never expected to go out to the front lines during times of war, even if they trained to be huntsmen.

But given that Karin and Yuzu would sneak out to fight alongside the rest, Kyouka and Kisuke suggested they allow them to participate under their close and strict supervision, as well as the promise that they would not neglect their normal lives and only go out when the situation demanded it. But their roles mostly consisted of defending the hub known as Karakura Town from foreign invaders. Tonight, they had a rather unresolved battle against Candace Catnipp and her gang of femme fatales, though Ichigo knew the girls were holding out on them a lot, as though they were merely play-fighting with the siblings, a fact that only irked Ichigo, even if things ended for the day relatively peacefully.

Yang reached out with a small smile, stroking both their heads, as well as Ichigo's who sported his usual embarrassed scowl as she did. Even in such times, her younger 'brother's antics never failed to brighten Yang's mood, if only a little.

"Well isn't that peachy? Someone's uncharacteristically silent. Not gonna complain about having to clean up nasty Grimm goo or running out of spirit energy in the middle of going berse- ahem, I mean, while fighting?" asked Lily, as she gently tried to dress the other wounds on Yang's body after having tended to the Kurosaki siblings. Nel's injuries from the day were severe enough that she needed to be housed in a separate room while receiving separate care.

Orihime had already healed her enough to bring her out of critical condition, as well as Yang's slashed eye, but the orange haired teen had no more spirit energy to spare for her and had to save her abilities for others with more severe injuries. The poor girl had no chance to rest at all, given that the 4th Squad of the Soul Society had their hands full. Even so, her almost-godlike abilities to heal nearly any non-fatal injury was one in the strategy books of every faction participating in the war.

Tatsuki and Ichigo did spend what little time they could with Orihime, so as to make her feel somewhat at home, even if that wasn't any longer than a few minutes a day.

And hence, she was currently being tended to by Lilynette who was applying some healing salve given to her by the 4th Squad of the Soul Society. Infused with a bit of spirit energy, they did a great job in accelerating healing injuries and wounds. Something that was the fruits of labor between Unohana, Kisuke and Kyouka.

"Sorry…just not in the mood" replied the Blonde brawler. "Just got some things on my mind"

Yang, the Kurosaki siblings, Tatsuki, Blake and Pyrrha, who were nearby, still couldn't get used to Lilynette's new appearance.

Way back then, when 'Lily', one of the 4 beings of the planet had diffused back into Starrk, Ulquiorra and Lilynette, the resulting diffusion had left many mouths agape. Because in place of a child was a grown woman who was similar to build to 'Lily', but with long, ankle length wavy lime green hair, a pink colored eye with her hollow mask looking much more detailed than a motorcycle helmet. Even Starrk and Lilynette herself were confused about her change. Not just about her own appearance, but the massive spirit energy Lilynette was giving off, one that matched Starrk's whose own spirit energy had reduced compared to before.

"Ah, I see" Kyouka had remarked. "It would seem as though my sister's influence shuffled the balance of spirit energies you two…or you three possessed, with Lilynette receiving a significant portion of Starrk and Ulquiorra's spirit energies. Naturally it would appear your own body has grown to reflect said change. I considered she might do something like that before she left"

"That would appear to be true" added Ulquiorra. "My own spirit energy has reduced somewhat, but to an incomparable degree as opposed to Starrk. It will have no bearing on my own combat abilities however"

"Well, good for you, huh?" said Starrk. "I never particularly cared about my spirit energy and what not, but you can brag to your two friends about being grown up eh?"

Lilynette had nothing to say, still reeling in from the shock of her new form.

"Indeed. I doubt it's anything to worry about. In fact, your Resurreccion should be much stronger, considering that Lilynette formed the guns you used in that form" said Kisuke. "Though, I would recommend getting used to your newer abilities and forms before things kick off"

And that had been that. Yachiru had indeed been pouting a whole day when she saw Lilynette, but was back to her happy self when she realized that both her and Lilynette could now tease Crescent for being the only child in their trio.

Back in the present, Lilynette had mostly been helping out with providing enough reishi to everyone else that needed it at camp that day, given her massive reserves.

"This is the only thing I can do better than others" she stated. "Unlike you guys, I'm no good at fighting. I just leave the muscle work to Starrk. Even if I form the 'gun' when we use our Resurreccion, it's nothing more than an outlet for Starrk to release spirit energy. In that regard, I must say. This bracelet is amazing. It makes it easier to share reishi with others to those that need it. Really, when Urahara and Aiz….Kyouka work together, I don't think we have much to worry about-" she sighed.

As if on cue, there was a puff of smoke and in place of the grown woman was the familiar looking lime green haired girl with a pouty expression.

"Urgh…guess I'm out of gas. Given how massive mine and Starrk's spirit energies are, I'm really surprised they're drained out so fast. That speaks about how serious the situation is huh?"

"Yup, this form suits you much better" said Yang with a weak smile.

"Urgh, speak for yourself" groaned Lily "Oh well, I'm gonna go sleep for a while now. You guys take care" she said, groggily waving them goodbye before disappearing.

"Anything can be exponentially worse with enough numbers" added Pyrrha. "To be honest, I would say we're holding up quite well, considering everything"

"I agree" came Kisuke's voice from the center of the room. "None of us here died yet, and I honestly considered that to be a very possible option for some of us. I suppose the uncertainty that luck brings into the calculations can lead to things taking a very different turn than expected. From today's battles, I can tell we made considerable progress"

"We were almost there…" trailed off Yang, clenching her fist.

"Sadly I got incapacitated rather early on. Soi-Fon and I did make our way into one of the Quincy outposts near their capital where we suspected they might be holding the Quincy Relic. But we were intercepted by BG9" said Blake with a sour tone. "I think Soi-Fon did manage to escape but I…I honestly don't remember. I know I was knocked out as I was trying to get out, but I was hit by a blast from afar. I think it was one of the Hell-Grimm. Next thing I know, I was being hauled by you and Nel"

"Captain Soi-Fon did manage to get away, but only thanks to Summer Rose, or so she tells me" replied Kisuke. "It would seem she engaged BG9 in combat just as the captain was about to be captured. Knowing what his abilities are, I'm glad she managed to make it out"

"We had a rather nasty run-in with a couple of Sternritter ourselves" added Mila-Rose, along with Sung-sun and Apacci. They looked tired, uncharacteristically so. "What were their names again? Urgh, I can't even be bothered"

"I believe they were rather proudly announcing their names" sighed Sung-sun. "It figures you two muscle heads would pay no attention to such vital information. I believe they were called Cang Du and Pepe. Nothing too special, though the latter was rather disgusting and unsavory to the point that I would rather not talk about it now" A shiver passed through her body. "I hate to admit it, but if not for that oaf" she said, pointing to Grimmjow. "I shudder to think the state I would be in"

Grimmjow scowled "Tch, I took care of one of them, but the other coward got away…."

"He says that, but this ass didn't exactly arrive on time. Must've gotten lost with his misbegotten sense of smell" added Apacci, earning a glare from the Blue Jaguar. "Ruby was helpin' us stall the two creepy fuckers until he showed up, and then she disappeared. Speakin' of which, where IS she? She disappears for days on end after the damn Quincy stormed your school, and then she just shows up out of nowhere only to disappear again without so much as a word….."

"Ruby was there?!" exclaimed Yang "But that doesn't…...When I saw Mom, and she saved us from Cinder, she said that Ruby was the one who carried Blake over" said Yang, making several eyes raise. Following that, she also mentioned her side of things, including things Raven told her as.

Ichigo, Karin and Yuzu scurried over to Yang. "Hold up one sec, Yang!" they cried in unison, surprising her.

"What do you mean nee-san saved Blake? That's impossible…because she was.." said Ichigo.

"She fought off some of the enemies we were fighting for us yesterday" added Yuzu. "There were so many of them, and my defensive shield wasn't holding up well. I saw Karin-chan getting shot by one of those….those horrible things, but then Nee-san showed up. I was so surprised, because the last we heard, she was with the Quincy…what was her name again? Brunhilde? And then she just showed up here. But she left before we could ask her anything. Still…..I…." The younger of the twins shuddered, as though swallowing her words.

"She went wild, I don't think I'd even seen her that mad…or scary" added Karin. "If I didn't know any better, she just wanted us to get out of there and leave those things to her. Of course, this isn't the first time she's been angry at us for not listening to her, so naturally we did stay and help her, if only for a short while. I guess even Ruby-nee gets scary mad when Karakura Town is threatened. After all, it is her second home"

"But she left as soon as she came" said Ichigo. "I don't know exactly how long we were fighting, but it was a while. I didn't think she would have the time to be looking after others while she has her….own things to do. Speaking of which, where IS she?"

"How's that possible?" asked Mila-Rose. "We just told you that she was with us holding off those Quincy bastards…"

"Hold up, that doesn't make any sense…" cut in Weiss. "Are you sure it was Ruby and not her mother? Because she was helping me out of a rather precarious spot. I swear, what's her problem? First, she refuses to say anything, and then she just leaves without so much as a hello? I'll be sure to give her a piece of my mind when she shows up again" she huffed, her mouth curling into a pout.

Now, all heads were turning in confusion.

"Well well well…" said Kyouka. "I think I see what's going on. Tell me, how did she look when you saw her?"

Weiss gave a small pause before answering. "...If I had to explain, 'defeated' is the word that comes to my mind. It infuriates me that even in that state, she was far better at dealing with those…things that I was. I clearly need more training. Blast! If only I could see those things in the eye…..how can anyone be sound of mind after…after what those things…And she just ripped those things to shreds. It really made me question who the real monsters were….."

"So she's been going around, dashing from one place to another while helping us all out.." explained Pyrrha, with a sad expression. "While I think it's a noble gesture, I…I am not happy about what that means, at all"

Jaune sighed "We're just deadweights in her eyes, huh? Well, can't blame her. I mean….sure, we ARE stronger, or atleast you guys are. I mean, even after everything Ms. Kyouka did, I still have no clue what I can do. And then Pyrrha's ability basically gives massive stat boosts but also burns everyone around her, including herself. But hey, atleast you still have your semblance"

"You said it pal" chimed in Nora, who was surprisingly cheery even in the tense atmosphere. "I just have good ol' muscle strength and mah electric hammer and mah new skill that Big-sis Kyouka gave using that magic stone. I don't like using it though, that just ruins the fun. It's like using a cheat code" she grinned. "I even met someone with my last name, who would've thought! We exchanged a couple of blows, but I could tell he was going easy on me. I'm pretty darn certain he could've just swatted me away like a fly. Atleast we our senses of humor were on the same page. I have no doubt we were related. He was laughing as much as I was while we took down scores of monsters together! He even said he'd vouch for me to his boss"

"You're probably the only one who feels happy about the whole thing" sighed Ren. "Still….it's as you said. That Gerard guy could've easily squashed us or anything else that came our way. Detection, intel gathering and the like being my only strong points, I got a very good read on his current spirit energy. It was massive, probably one of the strongest I've ever sensed in the whole battlefield. We were really lucky he was amused by Nora's stupi-...Nora's cheerfulness. Though….we didn't see Ruby. Crescent did make a visit however. She helped us out initially before leaving after which Gerard came along" he said, earning himself a rather painful pinch on his cheeks for nearly calling his childhood friend.

"Nora Valkyrie's current…..demeanor is still a lot better than Qrow Branwen" said Kyouka. "It would appear we should remove him from active duty until he can perform them effectively"

"Oh yeah Uncle Qrow, where IS he? I remember Amber rushing off to help him earlier, but is he still injured? I thought Orihime…" questioned Yang.

"No, it's not his injuries" explained Kyouka. "Not his physical ones atleast. But his mind seems to have taken quite the toll. I don't blame him in the slightest however. While there is no doubt that the sights of war and battle are heavy on young minds such as yourselves, he is a seasoned veteran huntsman. Still is. Both he and Amber were quite successful in accomplishing the objectives we gave them the past few days. He could stand things that most people wouldn't have tolerated witnessing on the battlefield. No doubt thanks to his earlier upbringing as one of the Branwen tribe. But even then, he is still only human"

Kisuke gave a difficult sigh. "The Quincy have been very successful in pushing back the forces from Hell, so most of us were lucky enough to not see the aftermath. But as with everything, it isn't always the case. Today, where he went, Galathea's forces were victorious against the Quincy. There were some that surrendered, some that were captured. And…he happened to see what they did to them"

There was a difficult pause in the room again.

Captured by the jailors of Hell.

They had heard stories of course. Either from Ruby from before the war started, as well as from Kyouka and Lily before she de-fused.

Just the very thought of those stories and descriptions had made them shudder, painting a picture that was difficult even to imagine. Yang's worries grew even more, when she wondered what state her uncle must be in.

She got up to leave, pushing her injured body against her will to go visit her uncle, before Tatsuki stopped her.

"I would give him some time" she advised. "We tried to talk to him but…he simply wouldn't have it. Amber's been looking after him, so he should be fine for the moment"

Yang paused, but reluctantly sat back down, wincing as the pain from her wounds shot up again.

"Unfortunately, it is something you will have to get used to" said Ulquiorra "From my end, I was able to locate the Relic present in Galathea's domain. I did intend to make an attempt to retrieve it, but it is easier said than done"

Kyouka raised her eyes "That is rather impressive. I did not calculate you would be capable enough to make it past the several powerful resurrected Arrancar in her command, such as Arturo and Baraggan"

"No, I did not encounter any adversaries" he admitted. "The real danger in retrieving the Relic stored away in Galathea's domain is not from the sheer numbers of Togabito she commands, nor is it from her generals. It lies in the domain itself. The air, the spirit energy, it almost feels alive. And it encompases the entirety of her domain, growing more stagnant and toxic as one proceeds deeper. Voices alien to the world, as well as memories and visions from afar fill the air. I have no doubt no sane human could make it past the first few levels of her domain before falling to madness. It is something that cannot be comprehended, nor should it be by those of sound minds. And it shows no distinction to foe or ally. Even with my own empty soul, I could only make it so far before needing to make a strategic retreat" he explained. "The one with the highest chance of success….are those that have ventured deep into Hell's domains and have acclimated to its toxic atmosphere"

Weiss's eyes widened. "Doesn't that mean the only one who can is…."

"Ruby….." said Yang in a small voice.

"Yes. Summer Rose and Crescent Rose could too. I have no doubt they also lay in wait in the deepest levels. But their souls are still captives of my sister. Meaning this….to retrieve the Relic held in my sister's possession, Ruby Rose MUST be the one to do so. Not my brother and his armies, nor us with our own Soul Reapers, Humans and Hollows. Only she can retrieve the Relic and therefore end her participation of my sister and her armies in this war" proclaimed Kyouka. "Goodness me, it all comes back to her all over again, doesn't it?"

"And we still have no idea where she is?" questioned Rukia.

Almost as if on cue, the flaps to their makeshift camp opened, revealing two figures, with one carrying the other who was almost slumped over, with clothes torn all over and injuries still squirming and closing over, healing.

"Nee-san/Onee-chan/Ruby-nee/Aneki!"

The Kurosaki siblings plus Tatsuki were the first to rush towards Tier, who looked rather displeased as opposed to the relief and worry on the former's faces. Ruby herself was slumped over Tier's shoulders, her face hidden. But her raspy, tied breaths couldn't be more audible.

A thin, robotic looking obsidian blade with green lines and markings was loosely slung by her waist, barely held by her tattered clothes covered in blood, dust and blackish grime. The blade itself was so worn out that one might have easily identified it as being a few years old. Surprisingly, the edge still looked just as sharp as ever. However, the stench of blood and dirt coming off it put Blake completely off. Ruby herself looked as though she hadn't bathed in days. Her hair completely frayed and dusty, her face caked with mud and dust. Even the fur on her ears and tail had no semblance of the luster Blake remembered seeing.

"I found her in one of the trenches. Her wounds are healing, but she's completely exhausted" reported Tier. They could almost see her disapproving look of disbelief.

"Send word for the 4th squad to bring in some fresh supplies of hollow reishi capsules, and also prepare a restorative bath for her" ordered Kyouka, and soon personnel were scurrying about, barking more orders amidst existing ones.

"You're making a big fuss over nothing….." grumbled Ruby sleepily. "I just need a breather, I know my limits. I would've found some rogue hollow or togabito to restore my spirit energy or something"

"I will not listen to one more word coming out of your mouth tonight, little one" replied Tier sternly, her words cold as ice. "If I hadn't found you today, you would be the one being preyed upon, given your condition. You are far beyond the point of needing someone to babysit you"

"What the hell happened to you?" asked Ichigo in disbelief.

"These guys have been tellin' us you've been running around helping everyone non-stop and you completely disappeared on us a few days back too…we've all been worried sick about you!" cut in Tatsuki

"I'll say" growled Grimmjow. "You just want to hog all the fun, don't you? Scared we'll rob you of your prey? Or maybe you think we're not good enough for you to fight with?"

"Oh buzz off…" scoffed Ruby tiredly, somewhat annoyed even. "I'm really not in the mood now. I'm not a battle junkie like you. I just hate this damn, stupid war, I don't even know what the hell is the point. But it's here, and I'll do my part in ending it. Rather than asking me, the question you should be asking is why we're fighting a war that needs my brother and sisters, as well as my friends to be in it"

"Battle junkie huh?" retorted Grimmjow, scowling. "Big words for someone who looks like she's been having the time of her life ripping her enemies to shreds and feasting on them just so you could continue fighting longer without sparing a single moment to rest. Kinda fitting for a damn Vasto Lorde. Right now, these brats are more of a challenge than you are. If you want to go die fighting that's on you, but you'd better not tell me something about fighting too much and then go do something else while getting yourself killed in some ditch somewhere"

Ruby returned a glare, but was honestly too tired to care. Her younger sisters jumped in, taking over for Tier.

"For now, why don't you come and eat something? And while you're at it, you should probably take a bath too. When was the last time you entered the shower? You stink, Ruby-nee" asked Karin, supporting Ruby from the other end.

"I understand wanting to help us, but I have to say that I don't feel very happy at the thought that you've been pushing yourself to the limit because of that" said Pyrrha with a soft tone, her expression forlorn. "I would be beside myself if anything happened to you. If there's something on your mind, you can always share it with us"

"And I don't approve of you going off on your own, Ruby Rose" added Kyouka. "Isshin Kurosaki is one thing, but it is rather tiresome to have to have to deal with your friends, siblings, Yoruichi Shihouin and a number of other individuals, including even Lieutenant Kusajishi pertaining to matters relating to you. Right now, you are vital for our plans to crush my sister's army. I cannot have you wandering around as you please"

"I don't need anyone's permission to look after my family" she snapped back with a surprising burst of strength. "I won't allow them to fall victim to this battle. I'll handle it all if I have to, since it's clear they'll just get killed at this pace, or worse"

The temperature in the room seemed to drop noticeably. Many of their faces did a 180, but one presence simply had enough. Pushing aside her foster siblings, Yang's fists were already holding up Ruby by her collar, with the latter just as unfazed as she was tired. Ichigo and Tatsuki rushed forward to stop the Blonde Brawler, but Ruby merely raised a hand, stopping them.

"What the hell…" she growled in a low tone, taking long, slow breaths. Her once-lilac eyes had turned several shades of red. "What the hell gives you the right to mouth off like that after fucking off for several days…"

"You're hurt…." she replied, her eyes flinching a little. "I'm sorry. I thought Raven would make it in time, but clearly it wasn't enough. I would've come myself, but those damn Kaiserdemons….3 on 1 is a bit unfair" she trailed off, leaving some gasping.

Three on one?!

She fought three of them at once and lived to tell the tale?

Pyrrha shuddered, remembering the fear that painfully pulsed in her heart as she made a blind retreat alongside Rukia just from fighting one of them. If it hadn't been for Captain Ukitake saving them…

"Unbelievable…" scowled Mila-Rose. "You damn idiot, do you just conveniently forget that you're just a damn Hollow now and not an Arrancar while you're out there?!"

"Fuck that" Yang's grip on Ruby's collar tightened. "Who the hell asked you to do something so unnecessary?! So this is what mom was talking about. But even she was playing it down a lot. Figures, a shitty parent like her probably didn't bother to look twice. Who the hell do you think you are, you're just my little brat of a sister. I DON'T NEED TO BE BABYSITTED BY YOU!"

There was an uncomfortable silence across the room, while Ruby herself continued to stare at her sister unabated.

"Yeah, Nelliel took a hit, but she still…WE still came out on top and survived the day. I still lived. And I'll continue to kick ass and live. Little by little, I'll definitely surpass Nelliel too and anyone else whose ass needs kicking. And I'll do it while taking good care of our little brother and sisters. Without nearly dying and putting everyone's mind to shit, like you are" she glared.

"I know how you feel, Ruby" added Rukia. "My brother….used to be quite overprotective himself. When he was still…..if he was still here today, I'm sure he would've never allowed me to participate in this war. Or perhaps he would've used his authority as the head of the Kuchiki to send me to the back lines while taking on the frontlines himself. But after having to take up his mantle, I understand that his way of thinking wasn't necessarily the best thing for those we love, if we ever want them to grow and mature"

"Seconded" added Weiss, her brows creasing in annoyance. "I find it rather insulting that a single soldier finds the need to cover for the rest of us, despite the work and dedication we've put in to be valuable additions to the war front"

"And you'll wear yourself out faster than you can save anyone, Ruby. Trust me, I can tell. You're already at your limit, aren't you?" asked Blake with concern.

"Please, just rest a while and we can all defend our homes together, like a family again" pleaded Yuzu. "I promise we won't get in your way"

Kisuke then interjected "It pains me to see that you trust our meticulous and careful planning so little, Ruby. You know Yoruichi would never forgive me if anything happened to them. And I'm being entirely serious for once"

"Not to mention, if you continue to be this reckless Ruby Rose, we'll lose the only one capable of bringing a halt to my sister's armies. So if anything, your efforts are the real roadblocks to their survival" added Kyouka.

"So? Have anything to say for yourself?" demanded Yang, almost towering over the slumped cheetah Faunus.

Even as she rebuked her sister, Yang had a constant feeling of unease. With every passing moment, she felt the urge to just stop then and there. But the rage in her mind as far too much to be boxed in. She just had to do it, to speak her mind, even if she was nothing more than extra baggage.

And perhaps it was that look in her sister's eyes that gave her that feeling.

Those stone cold unfazed silver eyes.

"Just today, you died thrice" she said slowly. Her tone a pitch lower than usual. "Just today"

With surprising strength, she straightened her form, despite the vice grip Yang had been maintaining on her collars. This was NOT the strength of someone who had been thoroughly exhausted. Now, it was Ruby who was towering over Yang.

She then looked over towards Pyrrha, Blake, Weiss, Jaune and Nora.

"Al of you only saw the things in front of your eyes. Shall I tell you of the things that were right beside you, and yet you were completely oblivious to? Before that Kaiserdemon cornered you and Rukia, there were 3 snipers from the Quincy army aimed at your heads. Of course, the Kaiserdemon kept them busy after I lured it away from Rukia and Pyrrha and towards the Quincy, but make no mistake, Yang. I would've taken care of them myself if it came down to it"

A cold, unwavering voice. There was absolutely no hesitation, no doubts in her answer. Yang found herself taking a step back

Ruby continued "And you, Blake. Forgetting the fact that I had to leave you in Raven's care, whom I was lucky to happen across, nothing would've prevented you from becoming a prisoner to the Jailers of Hell had I not torn them asunder first. And let's not forget the Quincy general who was lying in wait for them and you to duke it out to take care of the survivor, either to be killed or to be taken his prisoner" she said. "Of course, I couldn't have that. So I took care of them"

Blake blinked, unable to get in a word.

"Weiss. I'm sorry I was late. As I said, I was held up on my own end as well. But you don't have a single clue just much the Quincy are on the lookout for you. Yhwach himself deems you a special being, a Übermensch. The Second Pureblood. My only Daughter. My heir. This is what he calls you. I doubt even Masaki received such praise from him. Given your…current constitution, it makes sense. You'd be lucky if all that happens was they take you prisoner. But not all the Quincy agree with him. Some don't like the fact that the King of the Quincy himself treats a little girl as though she were his own daughter, while said 'daughter' remains completely oblivious to everything. Before Mila, Sung-su and Pacci came to help you out, I had to cut off the heads of 4 of them myself, before they even made it to you" she continued, "And I'll continue to keep you away from them, as much as I possibly can, for as long as I live. I won't ever let you suffer Masaki's fate, even if I have to continue hunting down Quincy"

Weiss's eyes widened, and she found it difficult to look the cheetah Faunus in the eye.

"And Yang. I'm….sorry about not seeing you. I trusted Raven enough to go rescue you. And she did. You might call her a 'shitty parent', but she cares about you more than you think. And she is no stranger to war. I have no doubt she shares my sentiments. You said you survived, and that what I did was unnecessary" Despite Yang's hold, Ruby took a step forward, overpowering Yang. A slow chill began traveling up her spine.

"All of you, you were lucky you only fought hollows and other 'Grimm'. But the fighting has only started. When the time comes, you'll also have to face others. Humans like you. Humans you know. Perhaps former friends forced to serve on opposite sides, given orders to kill the ones you love on sight, like Tia and Nel"

She took another step towards Yang, her eyes staring deep into the now fear-laden lilac eyes of her sister. "Do you….really understand what it means to be out there? Can you really make peace after punching a hole through another human in the battlefield even though it was nothing but self defense? And sometimes doing so intentionally because the situation called for it? Can you make the right decision without hesitation with only milliseconds to act knowing that you'll get your friends killed if you just stood there? And then, could you really accept it?"

"Ah..u..ug…I…I uh…"

Ruby slowly reached out with her hands. Hands that felt so much like the claws of a beast. Her eyes wide, Yang slapped it away from her face, her heart pounding. Ruby didn't even flinch.

"Tia tells me Uncle Qrow's lost it after seeing what the Togabito did to their prisoners. And he's a seasoned Huntsman. Can you ever stomach that? I can. I have, and I will, continue to do so, without question, if it means you'll live. Even if I hate every second of it. If it means they'll live, and don't have to take my place. It's not that I don't want you all to grow and mature. Of course I do. Me, you, Blake, Weiss and all of us from Beacon were all raised to be soldiers to fight the Grimm for the sake of our families. I never expected we would just sit out our days in peace. I just don't want you to become too good at it. Otherwise, you'll just be like me. And I couldn't stand to see you like that" she finished.

"But as you are now….you'll just be killed and left to rot, forgotten by the world as it moves on. Another day, another war. How could I ever let things be, when my own sister looks this terrified of a half dead Faunus who hasn't had a blink of sleep in 3 days, not to mention anything decent to eat other than scraps from scavenging Hollows and Togabito. You can't even let me caress your face without scurrying away like a scared little kitten. So…..for you own good, don't try to do stupid things, Yang. Unfortunately, this is a little too much for you"

The Blonde Brawler found herself choking at her own conflicted thoughts. Her mother's words from earlier in the day, that now mirrored Ruby's own words, and the flashing images of things that she had been forced to see, it was just too much. She could feel her head spinning, from the sheer massive number of thoughts and feelings clouding her entire being.

"That's enough" cut in Tier, "Don't forget, you were once in her shoes as well, just as frail and naive, more so than your sister. They will learn, as did you. For now, the hour is late, and there is much to discuss. But we all need to rest and recover our bodies and spirit. To the young ones, my only advice is that you need not rush your lives, and it is our responsibility to look after those under our fins. And for you, Ruby…little one, you will stay and rest. I do not want to ask Kisuke Urahara to bind you in place with Kido. But I will if you continue your reckless suicidal shenanigans"

But Ruby shook her head. "No, that's alright" she said slowly. "I don't plan on going anywhere. I agree that I'm…a little tired. I'll stay with you, if only for a short while" she said, walking away from Yang without so much as a single glance at her distraught sister, her shocked Faunus companion, her siblings worried sick or anyone else in the room. Her gait and form was back to her tired, slumped self, any semblance of strength they saw earlier, gone.

"Tch, the hell do you mean by 'Don't'? With that expression on your face, maybe you should practice what you preach" murmured an irritated Grimmjow as the Cheetah Faunus passed by him without a word.

The rest of the evening passed by uneventfully, though it was clear that her words had had their effect. None of them really spoke to each other, save for some necessary conversation needed to wrap up the work for that evening. Ruby herself chose to take a tent far away from her siblings and friends, until Tier decided to give her company. Yang, for one, was grateful, since she was in no mood to make the atmosphere more complicated and uneasy. She was tired and wanted nothing more than to sink into the ground and let sleep take over.

Soon, Kisuke, Kyouka, Rukia and some of the Soul Reapers departed for the Soul Society as the inky night skies cloaked the makeshift tents in darkness.

Nothing more stirred, save for the occasional soft rustle of wind, or the light snores of the wounded giving in to their exhaustion.

"How utterly careless of them" thought a shadowy figure to itself as it stood amidst the several people sleeping and resting in front of it. He had always existed amongst them, but also never existed there at all. "Not to mention, I really despise sinking this low all for….this little Fräulein. But, orders are orders"

The figure cast but one glance at the little girl in front of him, and all was silent again. The rustle of the wind and the soft breaths of those asleep continue as they did before, as though nothing ever interrupted their solemn rhythm. The figure disappeared just as enigmatically as it appeared, with no evidence of neither head nor hair of its existence.

When the morning rays of the sun broke through the darkness of the previous night, the usual bustle of noises continued as they did. The injured continued to sleep a little longer to allow their spirits to rest, while those of the Soul Reapers began their duties for the day, as well as prepare for the war.

Nothing was amiss, until Tatsuki Arisawa and Yang Xiao Long and Ichigo Kurosaki greeted each other for the day, approaching Orihime to see her off before the former left for Karakura Town with Ichigo while Yang did the same before she prepared for another day of fighting.

The orange haired girl was still asleep, looking just as tranquil and peaceful as she did when she had passed out from exhaustion the night prior after constantly healing the wounded as they came.

But when Tatsuki Arisawa caressed her face with a soft expression, the color drained from her face, and her expression upturned into one of shock and confusion.

Her dearest friend lay on a plain white sheet serving as her bed, her expression peaceful and soothing, her skin as cold as ice, and as pale as snow. Her breath and her heart as still as the serene expression on her face.

She was the very picture of tranquil beauty, asleep and forever fated to sleep.

Author's notes:

I'm really glad I was able to pick myself up and start work on this again, especially considering some recent personal circumstances. I worked on the chapters bit by bit, and am glad I was able to finish it even if late. Better late than never I suppose. I'm thankful for the understanding and support from all the readers regarding my personal health situation. I promise I'll continue to work on the story, at whatever pace that I am able to. Thanks a lot again!
