Dancing brought such joy, a release for Elsa, a way to forget the world outside and just be present. It was a pure moment, where she felt free. She'd never danced to music before, but she had danced under snow her entire life. As a child, her feet would glide effortlessly on the grass in her backyard while the snowflakes twirled around her like partners in a silent ballet. It wasn't as clichéd as it might sound, it was her way of connecting with the world in a gentle, effortless way.
"What song is this?" She glanced up at him, her eyes sparkling with curiosity as she stood from the bench, ready to follow his lead.
Jack's heart skipped a beat. Standing this close to her made him feel like his whole world was crumbling and reassembling itself in the best way possible. "One of my favorites," he replied with a grin, his voice betraying a bit of nervousness despite his casual demeanor. He extended his hand to her like it was the most natural thing in the world.
Elsa looked at his outstretched hand for a brief moment before taking it with a smile. "Don't step on my toe," she warned, a playful tone in her voice.
Jack's grin widened, his chest swelling with pride at her trust. "I will try my very best," he promised, his voice full of lightheartedness. The two of them swayed together slowly, the rhythm of the music guiding them. Jack had never been the most graceful dancer, but with Elsa in his arms, he felt like he could do anything. They moved together, perfectly imperfect, until the lyrics began, and the music filled the space between them.
Jack couldn't help but laugh quietly as they danced, his goofy smile never leaving his face. "Okay, full disclosure," he said, breaking the soft silence between them. "I'm terrible at this. So if you end up stepping on my feet, it's totally my fault."
Elsa laughed, the sound so carefree, so real. "Well, at least you're honest."
"I'm also a professional toe-stepper," Jack added, his voice overly serious as he twirled her gently, only to trip on his own feet. He caught himself before he could fall, laughing even more. "See? Told you!"
Elsa's laugh filled the air, and Jack's heart swelled even more. "You're such a goofball," she teased, still smiling.
"Well, you love me anyway," Jack replied confidently, his grin matching the twinkle in his eyes.
.
When we're out in a crowd laughing loud
.
As somebody who had never danced with someone else, she questioned, perplexed, "So how do we dance together?"
.
And nobody knows why
.
Putting two and two together, he surmised she had never danced with someone before. "Honestly, I'm not sure either. I've only danced childishly with Emma and Mom, and we're definitely not doing that."
.
When we're lost at a club, getting drunk
.
"Definitely not."
.
And you give me that smile
.
Hesitantly twitching his hand, he positioned it on her side under her chest. "We've seen people dance; we could figure it out."
.
Going home in the back of a car
.
She breathed and bobbed her head nervously. "Quick then, the song will end soon."
.
And your hand touches mine
.
"It's fine; we'll play it again." He caressed her cheek.
.
When we're done making love
.
One arm at her side, and then the other clutched her hand between them. "That's done; now we simply move around."
.
And you look up and give me those eyes
.
She attempted to retain it, but she couldn't and burst out laughing. "Move around? You have no clue what you're doing, right?"
.
'Cause all of the small things that you do
.
Crossing his arms, he sulked, insulted. "As if you do! Well, I'm sorry, I just haven't danced with anyone."
.
Are what remind me why I fell for you
.
"How about you let me? Astrid has taught me how to dance. Hell, she forcefully gave me lessons every evening for months." Recalling those horrifying yet memorable moments, her heart warmed up.
.
And when we're apart, and I'm missing you
.
Grumpily, he muttered, "Okay then, you teach me, Your Majesty."
.
I close my eyes and all I see is you
.
She shifted his hands, hugging her midsection and stepped near to him, positioning her arms around his neck. "This...This is...good." And took an immense puff of air.
.
And the small things you do
.
He had never been in such an intimate position before. "Now what?" His silent voice turned heavy and raspy.
.
When you call me at night while you're out
.
"Feel the music and dance." Smiling intimately, she slid her hand from around his neck over his chest.
.
Getting high with your friends
.
"You were this close to Astrid? With arms around each other and all?" Closing his eyes, he teetered left and right, unsure.
.
Every "hi", every "bye", every "I love you" you've ever said
.
Understanding what he implied, she chuckled, and he felt the warm breath on his jaw tickle him. "Don't remind me. It was quite awkward, but overall, it was fun. Just be thankful."
.
You've ever said
.
He leaned down to her ear. "Oh, I'm very thankful. Because of her, I get to hold you this close."
.
'Cause all of the small things that you do
.
The words heated her, but she was happy that her already crimson cheeks from the cold hid it. "Sure," she said.
.
Are what remind me why I fell for you
.
Never mind, she got caught. "Oh, look at you blushing." He winked at her and took a long stride to his left, yanking her with him.
.
And when we're apart, and I'm missing you
.
This was a bizarre and awkward dance for them. "Okay, Jack, this isn't working. We look ridiculous dancing."
.
I close my eyes and all I see is you
.
He locked his eyes and tightened her closer to him. "No one's here, and if so, who cares?" A wicked smile superseded his expression before. "Let's be more stupid now!"
.
And the small things you do
.
Suddenly, she was spun around, but his grip on her wrist remained firm. "Jackson Overland!" She yelled, then her voice low and intense. "That was quite sudden."
.
When we're done making love
.
"Oh, come on...we'll be way more stupid now." He picked her up and spun her out into the chilly wind.
.
And you look up and give me those eyes
.
The freezing breeze and crisp snow hit her face with tremendous acceleration. "Jackson!"
.
'Cause all of the small things that you do
.
Grinning widely, he put her down and put forward his hands, surrendering, acting all innocent. "What did I do?"
.
Are what remind me why I fell for you
.
Acting cocky, was he? Elsa grimaced at him and then proceeded to pick up some snow from the thin layer off of the ice. "Run."
.
And when we're apart, and I'm missing you
.
He did; he ran around like crazy until Elsa halted before him and threw some snow in his face. "Ouch, Elsa," he whined and raised his eyebrows playfully. "Now you run!"
.
I close my eyes and all I see is you
.
Hurriedly, she circled like a cartoon character and slid on the ice, tumbling right on her back. "I can't no more."
.
And all I see is you and the small things you do
.
"Yup, you can't." He spread on the ice with her and cracked up. "The way you fell was funny but adorable."
.
All the small things you do
.
She struck out her arms but remained on the ice. "Not my fault. It's the ice."
Totally agreeing with her, he scrunched his eyebrows. "I blame the ice, too." As if she was a child, he was dealing with.
"As you should!"
He opened his mouth to say, "Now that we know we both suck at dancing-" He sighed. "Would you just want to lay here and let the snow fall on us?"
"To be-" One peek at his cute face, and she altered her words. "Sure we can."
His hand crawled inside hers, and his thumb skimmed her knuckles, something he was initiated to do a lot. "You missed my favourite song. Wanna listen to it again?"
Scooting nigher to his side, she told, "Yes."
His cold body conveyed her warmth.
And the song began to play again when he radioed.
.
When we're out in a crowd laughing loud
And nobody knows why
.
A question was on his mind, and he hoped for the answer to be yes to it. "Did you have fun today? I mean, other than the slipping on ice and the stupid dance?"
.
When we're lost at a club, getting drunk
And you give me that smile
.
"This was my only best and probably will be my favourite memory of Iceland now," she smiled gratefully.
.
Going home in the back of a car
And your hand touches mine
.
Moving around, he lifted her a bit and slid his coat under her, then drew her closer to him once again. "I'm super, super glad!" His hand grazed her soft cheek. "I promise you you'll have more favourite memories in Iceland. I'll make sure of it."
.
When we're done making love
And you look up and give me those eyes
.
Those spectacular blue eyes made fireworks go off inside her entire body. "Thanks for today," she nodded. "I liked it all." She pursed her lips. "Even the slips and the stupid dancing."
.
'Cause all of the small things that you do
Are what remind me why I fell for you
.
This came out of nowhere. Maybe the song lyrics did it. "I have fallen so hard for you, Elsa Overland. I don't know what you did to me, but I'm so in love with you." He connected his nose to hers and felt her smile against his cheek.
.
And when we're apart, and I'm missing you
I close my eyes and all I see is you
And the small things you do
.
To this, she had no answer; his confession always left her dumbfounded. "I don't know what to say," she was honestly.
.
When you call me at night while you're out
Getting high with your friends
Every "hi", every "bye", every "I love you" you've ever said
.
Lingering silence would have been the best option for him, but after a few seconds, a pristine, flawless snowflake landed on Elsa's nose. "Elsa, look! A snowflake," he gasped.
.
'Cause all of the small things that you do
Are what remind me why I fell for you
.
"Huh? What? Where? Babe?" She blinked multiple times quickly.
.
And when we're apart, and I'm missing you
I close my eyes and all I see is you
.
Frantically, he yanked the phone from his coat's enormous pocket. "Don't move, Queenie." She supposed it was a fresh nickname.
.
And the small things you do
When we're done making love
And you look up and give me those eyes
.
"Are you done?" He delivered her a thumbs up, and before she could wipe her nose, the Snowflake went up her nose by mistake, which made her sneeze multiple times.
.
'Cause all of the small things that you do
Are what remind me why I fell for you
.
That was the funniest moment he had caught all night. "Snowflake went up your nose!" How could it not be obvious?
.
And when we're apart, and I'm missing you
I close my eyes and all I see is you
.
Furiously darting toward his face, she swatted his chest. "Anyway…I love snow. I love winter, Jack." Then she admitted, "Your choice of songs is nice."
Ignoring her utterances, Jack smiled at the phone in his extended hand, "Look here," and Elsa had no choice but to smile with him.
She asked and placed her chin on his chest, staring into his ocean-lovesick eyes. "What's your obsession with taking pictures and recording every moment?"
He shrugged his shoulders, and the ice beneath them scraped his coat. "I like to capture the moments of everyone; when I miss them, I can look back at these and miss them even more. Like you."
"Idiot."
"Your idiot."
"Only mine."
Putting both arms around her slim waist, he suggested, and the words came out muffled as his cheeks were squashed. "Should we just...just rest our eyes for a while?"
Agreeing with him, she let go of his tortured enough cheeks. "I like the idea." And no one was here to disturb them.
In the blink of an eye, he blacked out and began snoring softly. His snores were barely audible and so cute. At least it would be easy to fall asleep with him.
Wait what?
Anything he did was cute to her.
Him capturing every moment on his phone was cute.
Him taking her ice skating so she could enjoy it was cute.
Him putting skates on her for her was cute.
Him making her try his favourite donuts was cute.
Him saying 'I love you' was cute.
Him making her enjoy Iceland was cute.
Whatever Jack did, Elsa found cute.
Elsa couldn't help but admire Jack as she gazed at his handsome face. Snowflakes dotted his white hair, making him look like he belonged in a winter fairy tale. She lightly flicked his lower lip, teasing him, her fingers tracing the softness of his dark red lips.
His hair, damp with snow, felt so soft as she ran her fingers through it. She brushed the snow off his forehead, her touch tender, completely captivated by him. Unable to resist, she kissed his cheek gently. Jack shifted in his sleep, curling closer to her, and her face flushed as he laid on top of her, holding her close.
She pulled out her phone to capture the moment, but before she could think, she leaned in and kissed him softly on the lips. His vanilla-sweet lips melted against hers, and for a moment, everything else faded away. Jack wasn't just handsome, he was kind, patient, and everything she hadn't known she needed.
She snapped a few more pictures, realizing how important it was to capture these moments. Jack mumbled in his sleep, "My Snowflake."
Elsa stifled a giggle, calling him an idiot under her breath. "I have a new nickname, huh?" she smiled to herself.
With a soft smile, she whispered back, "Yes, I'm your Snowflake, babe…only yours."
He muttered something else, "Donuts."
Elsa chuckled and, without thinking, whispered, "I love you, Jackson." Words she could never say out loud.
And in that moment, she knew. She had fallen in love with her husband, and she was grateful she had.
