Twins Missing in Dual Worlds chapter 28: Mabel in Black.
They talked about anything and everything since Hiber day yesterday, until they heard Hop Pop tell them. "Kids breakfast."
"What?!" Mabel asked.
Sprig's mouth was wide, "Did I just pull a Vengeful Jeff?"
"A who now?" Mabel was left more confused.
"No one you need to know about." Hop Pop said, not wanting one of Sprig's stories to traumatize Mabel.
"Alrighty," Mabel said with a smile on her face.
"So what you two have been up to?" He asked.
"Oh me and Sprig were talking about my summer at Gravity Falls. Sadly we did it until you entered the room." She said sitting down at the table.
"You? For real?" For some reason, this was the most surprising thing in the world to Mabel.
"Believe it or not I was young once." Hop Pop said, getting his kids to snicker. Hop Pop took a deep breath, "What are you planning to do for the day?"
"I'm not sure actually. Do you think I should?" Mabel didn't even think about it, then again she never believed in planning something ahead of time, sometimes she made an exception but most of the time it was going with the flow.
"I say so. The crops are frozen from Hiber Day, so you kids get the day off, but I expect you to get work tomorrow." He said to her, she was starting to become a real farm girl.
"A day off, I can work with that." She said, not realizing the paradox of what she had just told the family.
"Yes, I advise you to spend it wisely." They could be hard, and he figured they should be able to spend some of their youth having fun. He did care for all of them and was glad to have Mabel to help.
"Oh, I have plans." Mabel then started to rub her hands together in an evil fashion.
"I have regrets, but as long as we don't have to deal with the negative consequences, go crazy."
She ran off laughing, leading Polly and Sprig toward the unexpected town.
Polly said, "We will burn this town to the ground." The baby started to yell out like a maniac.
"No silly. We're going to eat candy." Mabel chose the paragon path in this conversation.
"Well, I do like candy," Polly said.
"See?" Mabel was glad she got a Nat 20 precaution check and gave Polly some candy.
"I also like mayhem and destruction." She said, before Polly could make a decision she noticed something, "What the deal with the arrows?"
"What arrows?" Mabel asked, she for some reason decided not to look up.
"The ones in the wall of the building, do you need glasses?" She asked pointing at them. Getting Mabel to obey her wishes, shows that there were arrows embedded in the wall of the grocery store.
"Wow, I am tired." She yawns with her one good hand.
"Hey while we out we can get your flipper checked out," Polly said, referring to the cast.
"It might have healed up already." Sprig hopes
"That would be nice," Mabel said.
"Agree." He said. He thought this would help them repair their friendship.
"Well lead the way."
Sprig happily walked her toward the same doctor who gave her the case about a week ago.
"I still can't believe that of all things is how I finally broke a bone."
"I'm sorry." He said meekly at this.
"Dipper probably would have panicked;" she chuckled at the thought.
"He's the lesser twin right?" Polly asked.
"Oh ya. I'm the alpha twin."
"Alpha Twin, alpha twin." She chants. Mabel joined in jovially, while Sprig wanted to feel like he fit in. They got into the hospital room and learned Mabel's arm recovered.
"Wow, I healed so fast?!" Mabel knew she had healed fast but even she was surprised, it was almost like she had something forcing her pain to leave.
"You sure you're not magic?" Polly asked.
"Pah no. I'm just crazy." Mabel dismisses the idea of a magic connection she might have.
"That does describe you to a T after all." She said, showing no ill will towards her human friend.
"Now Polly, I am sure Mabel is doing something normal for a human to recover."
Mabel knew what he was trying, and just dismissed it. Although I could tell something more was happening.
"Brown noser," Polly said.
"Well now that I'm able again let's get candy," Mabel said, wanting to indulge her best friend's sweet tooth.
"Candy candy candy." She said, leaping into Mabel, "Onward noble human."
Mabel imitated a pony and ran with her.
"There another one," he said pointing at the town hall showing the arrow there too.
Mabel ran to it.
"Guess we are doing this now, not like I wanted candy." She hears the siren call of candy in her ears. "I don't have a candy problem."
"Suuuuure." Mabel found that as convincing as a three-dollar bill.
She pouts crossing her arms, "Hey get closer there is a sign but I can't read it."
Mabel brought her to it, deciding to indulge Polly's laziness. "Bodyguard wanted to sign Sadie Croaker."
"Oooh, I wonder what she needs that for?" Mabel said.
"I think I have a few guesses." He said, looking at a picture of Mayor Croaker with an arrow in it.
"Okay, that is bad," Mabel said.
"I didn't know she had any enemies." Sprig said.
"I did, I'll be right back." Polly went down the street, and yelled, "WE know what you did Toadstool knock it off, or we will call the police."
"They; 're on to us, Toadie, let's book it." The former mayor said.
"Their problem solve." She said running back to them.
"Wow Polly, you should be her bodyguard!"
"NO one would take me seriously if I tried it." She said, "For some reason, people know I am a force of destruction and mayhem." Polly never liked when people thought she was weak.
"She so cute." Her brother said.
"No seriously you; 'd be great." Mabel praise.
"Like anyone would hire me." She said.
"If only we knew someone scary to give you credibility. Someone scary enough they won't mind you so cute, someone large, and with strange features." Sprig said.
"If only."
"Maybe some kind of monkey creature from another world." She said
"Haven't seen a monkey here." she started looking around to see what they were discussing.
"Something with opposable thumbs and is warmly bolded."
"Who names rhythm with Able," Polly added to Sprig's line of thought.
"Hey, I am no monkey!"
"Here is the banana order you asked for. Mabel" Wally said handing her a bundle as he walked by.
"These aren't mine." She said, seeing it had a big sticker with her name on it, she tossed it to the side.
Polly waited, for a second or two, "Want to apply?"
"Mabel says yes."
Sprig asked, "Why is Mabel talking in the third person?"
"Onward bound!" Not giving a real answer.
Archie the spider was sitting on a desk with several arrows web up, he barked at them. He was getting the new mayor of Wartwood attention.
"Awww he's so cute."
"Hu-Mabel and friends, what are you doing here?" The Mayor asked, correcting herself mid-word.
"We couldn't help but notice your advertisement," Mabel said.
"You willing to be my bodyguard?"
"You know it. We help you get in this position, and we are here to support you." Mabel said.
"And Polly and I will support Mabel." The only Male in the room said.
"This is very dangerous deary, are you sure you are ready?"
"Of course. Danger is my middle name!" Mabel Danger Pines said.
"Really?" She asked, not convinced she could handle that much then again the human surprised her once before.
"And as Sprig said earlier, I have these two to help." She said having her hand behind the two to show their support.
"Well, I would say no but you're the only one to volunteer so I guess you get the job by default." Sadie said, "Frog help us all."
"The two most beautiful words in language, Da-fault, de-fault." Sprig said.
"Booyah!" Mabel said, punching the air.
"Volunteer? Boo, we want money." Polly said.
"It will be fun silly." Mabel was surprised but not disappointed by this.
"If you say so." She said, not saying no to that look her bro and bestie were giving her.
Mabel grinned, she would help her.
"What do we do now?"
"So what do we do first?" Polly asked.
"First we gotta look the part," Mabel's grin widened.
"I like the look on your face and I am in." She said.
Mabel somehow with what she had made them matching black suits.
"You know the difference between me and you, I make this look good," Polly said.
"Aww, you're so cute!" Mabel said.
"Aren't I cute?" Sprig asked, tilting his head, one finger rubbing into his cheek, and giving a wink with one eye.
Sadie snorted. "You look scrawny."
He pouted at this.
The girls chuckle at this, "It's fine bro bro."
"I could put you in a dress." Mabel used to do it to Dipper all the time, so why not a frog boy?
Sadie spoke, "Maybe later I got work to do and won't have much free time until dinner time."
"Got ya, ma'am," Mabel said, taking focus on this.
"So what do bodyguards do Mabel?" Sprig and her felt they should trust Mabel's guidance even if they didn't say so out loud.
"We follow Mrs. Croaker around and keep her safe."
"So she is paying us to Stalk her?" she asked.
Mabel raised her finger to correct her but stopped, "I guess you could see it that way."
"I can do that, I am always watching someone, always."
"You are such a creeper boy," Mrs. Croaker said.
"I prefer the term adorable." He said, rotating his finger on his cheek.
"Ew," She said plainly. The older frog never liked the boy, he was such a troublemaker.
"Don't mind him, he is the distraction, while the bad guys are beating him up, you can get to safety," Polly said.
Mrs. Croaker did like that. "Works for me."
"WE got you," Mabel said, she had enough faith in herself and her team to pull it off.
"Just remember, we don't know he is after me."
"Yeah, we don't." She said, looking out the window pointing at her eyes then at the former mayor, and back again getting the large toad to run off.
"He's only one of them." Mabel had the feeling he was innocent.
"Who would want to see you dead anyway?" He asked.
"And why don't they just wait to let nature do the job?" Polly knew how old the Mayor was.
"Polly!" Mabel hadn't ever been so embarrassed before by this.
"What Mabel?"
Mrs. Croaker laughed. "I'm gonna outlive all of you."
Sprig started to rub his chin, stopping raising it as to look, "Fair enough." To Mabel's amusement.
"So what do you do all day Mrs. Croaker," Mabel asked, getting focus.
"It's mostly paperwork at the moment, and making sure every business in town is running well."
"That sounds so bor...fun." He said, correcting himself. He would do anything to get Mabel to trust him again, even if he had to play the part he got.
"It's not a matter of entertainment. It's a matter of doing what I can to help this community." Sadie was working hard at her job.
"Yeah Sprig, show some tact." She said, glad he made himself look dumb and not her.
"I remember when Grunkle Stan ran for mayor."
"How did they go?" Polly asked.
"He won, but then was disqualified."
"We dodge a bullet with that one." Sprig is glad to get rid of Toadstool.
"Haha maybe." She said holding her stomach as she laughed.
He pushed Mabel down since he saw an arrow coming down this way.
"Thanks for the save!" Mabel was nonchalant about the near-death experience. Guessing she was glad to get away unhurt.
It landed on Croaker's desk impaling on a piece of paper in it. "good thing whoever the archer is, is a terrible aim."
"I think they wanted to send a message. Literally."
"Let's see what it has to say." Polly try to read it.
They opened it up.
It was the message, saying something along the lines of Sadie Croaker must die.
"Well, that's on the nose," Mabel said.
"Wait a second, I don't know who wrote this letter." Sprig said.
"No duh," Polly said.
"What do you mean?" Mabel asked.
"We read a letter from Toadie and the former Mayor, if they wrote it I would recognize it, Mabel."
"That's probably one of the other people Mrs. Croaker mentioned," Mabel said.
"She didn't mention anyone, Mabel!" Polly yelled out.
"Ya, she said there were others."
"Who are they, Ms. Croaker?" He asked.
"That's the problem. There's a lot of people angry about a frog being mayor."
"We need names!" Polly said.
"It's part of your job to find out." Mrs. Croaker decided not to answer the three of her bodyguards.
"Can do." Sprig said, swinging his arm until his fist was at eye level.
"I am counting on you," Croaker said.
"Let's go, Mabel." He said wanting to spend a lot of time with his housemate.
"I see no reason not to." The two walked out of the room.
A horrible sound as if a demon from the nether itself was sheard, horrible suggesting the source of such sound would leave the victim without hope and will be of horrible faith. They turn to see Wally playing the accordion very, very badly.
"Urg that's an assault on my ears!" Mabel cried out.
"Let's go find out what causing it." Sprig said.
"And put a stop to it!" Mabel had a fire in her eyes.
"Agree, it too easy for an assassin to get by us if we don't stop this, ow and it hurt my ears."
"Exactly, we wouldn't hear 'em coming -wait!" Her eyes widened. "That's what they want!"
"Of course it is so obvious, why is it so obvious?" Sprig didn't get what they were talking about.
"Let's get 'em!" Mabel said she was ready to fight for this.
The two of them tackle the poor blue frog to the ground.
Wally screamed in surprise.
Sprig held him down, "I got him down."
"Who are you working for?" Mabel asked, trying to hold his head down.
"What are you talking about, I'm a vagabond I don't work for anyone."
"You're the leader?" Mabel didn't think that Wally seems
"Leader, what are you talking about?" He asked. "Help help the human lost her mind."
"You're trying to distract us!" Mabel looks back and forth at this.
"Distracted us, what?" Wally was completely insane.
Sprig's eyes widen up high, and says, "Wait what if he telling the truth."
"What?" Mabel only now realizes he could be innocent.
"He looks kinda dumb." Sprig said, completely honest at this.
"I am dumb!" He insisted.
"I believe it." Sprig said.
"Then why were you so loud?" Mabel demanded to know.
"WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?" Wally asked, his voice very loud.
She smacked him. "You're screaming!"
"Ow, what was that for, bloody." He said.
"Stop screaming at us!" Sprig demand.
"Your human is hitting me." He said.
"After you screamed!" Mabel defended his action.
"I think he is just hard of hearing." Sprig said the accordion was very loud at this.
"Ok. You're being too loud." She explained, trying to be more reasonable at this.
"We probably should go before we form a mob again." Sprig said as they were getting funny looks.
"Point taken. Let's make like a banana and split." What was with her and bananas now?
"Let's go." once away from Wally, "Think he a suspect?"
"Probably not."
"Agree." He said, "Looks shifty."
"Okay, Sprig, to our next suspects." Mabel declares pointing in a random direction.
"Maybe outer part of town, someone with some arrows." Sprig said since Archer required space that the inside of town didn't have.
Mabel nodded rushing to the area he mentioned.
He follows a paved road until he finds an arrow on the ground, "Arrow arrow, Mabel Mabel Mabel!" She wanted to get her attention.
Mabel ran over, grabbing the arrow from Sprig's hand and looking it over.
"I found this arrow, now all we have to do is find out who shot it."
Mabel searched the areas and walked face-first into a fence along the town edge.
Sprig got an idea, "Maybe it is someone a bit more on the outskirts of town more space and less fences."
"Like who?" Mabel asked.
"Well that grunter guy, he is a bit of a hermit." Sprig points out, "Maybe some of Mrs. Croaker's policy mess with his lifestyle choice."
"How so?"
"How should I know, I am just a kid." Sprig said. "I'll lead the way, Mabel." Leading Mabel to a nearby cabin.
He took her to a small house outside of town, "Hey Mabel do you ever get a sense of deja vu?"
"All the time." Stupid time travel.
Mabel knocks on the door.
A skinny olive green-skinned frog in over-brown overalls opened the door, he had bright orange hair and yellow eyes. "Well hello there kiddos, how may I help the two..." A thunk was heard, "Help the two..." Another thunk was heard, He quickly turned giant side and faced the road, "Would you stop that." He then turns normal again, "How may I help the two of you young kids?"
"What are your thoughts on the mayor?" Mabel asked.
"I think she is doing a good..." Thunk, "But her policy on..." Thunk "On roads, and tourism..." Thunk, thunk, thunk, "Can you give me a minute." He closed the door, came out the other side, and yelled the snail driver off. He walked back to the front door, opening the door much more calmly, "I think she is doing a good job, but her policy on fixing the roads, and getting more tourists have been making it hard for a frog to get some peace."
"What is that sound?" Mabel asked.
"Oh that is some peddles from the new road, Mayor Sadie got the road paved but the pebbles keep hitting my house. It can drive a person to murder." The simple country frog said.
"Murder?!" Sprig asked.
"Yeah, I have not gotten a good night's sleep in..." Thunk, thunk, thunk. "I'll be right back." He said grabbing some arrows from the ground, closing the door repeating the process from behind the house, and yelling at passing drivers.
Mabel looked at sPrig.
"He seems to be a very likely suspect, we need to see if there is anyone else though." He said, knowing who was their prime suspect.
"Bag him," Mabel ordered.
Before he could a massive roar was heard, "Let's do it later we got other small suspects to go after." She grabbed her hand and ran.
She ran with him, they couldn't bag them.
They bump into an old man that neither recognizes.
"Sorry for bumping into ya," Mabel said.
The older frog with a broken top hat, "I guess since you apologize it's okay." All the older frog dusted himself off, "Wait a second you frog boy, I think I am hallucinating some kind of freak." Referring to Mabel.
She laughed. "No no, I'm a human." She just accepted that was a thing here.
The elder frog tilted his head, that didn't explain much.
Sprig responds, "It's a thing with her, don't worry she doesn't bite. But she is still a good person and best." He quickly corrected, then wanting to change the subject, "Who are you anyways."
"Oh, my name is Jonah." The older frog said.
"Nice to meet ya mr," Mabel said.
"What are you doing here stranger?" He asked truly interested in this.
Jonah then said, "Oh I came to town for some business." He said rubbing his shoulder which had a cut through his jacket shoulder.
"Oh, what happened?" Mabel asked.
Jonah rubbed his shoulder, "While I was coming into town, an insane two-tusk frog threw an arrow at me." He said."And I'm a righty."
Mabel had the feeling she knew who did that.
Sprig spoke, "That must be rough, you probably should go see a doctor." He said, "WE can lead the way if you want."
"Nay." The older frog said.
"Oh no really we insist," Mabel said.
"You two younglings look busy." He said, trying to get rid of them.
"Never too busy. This can be Sprig and my good deed for the day."
He started to get nervous, "I guess but let's be quick about it then." Wanting to get this thing over with already.
"Okie doles." Mabel gives a false salute.
Sprig and her got him to the hospital but he looks nervous looking over his shoulder.
"You ok mr?" Mabel asked, she never got his name.
"Yeah, nothing for you to think about younglings." He said, trying to be overly polite.
"So what brings you to town?" Sprig asked.
"Oh, I have some unfinished business to attend to." He said.
"Like what?" Sprig asked.
"Adult stuff, you would not understand." Deflecting the question like an expert.
Mabel said, "I am very mature. I even have adult glitter." She said to the elderly.
"Sure you are sweetly." He said, not wanting to be there.
Something was off, about his rugged old frog.
They finally got to the doctor. Mabel walked him in. He went to the hospital, glad to be rid of them.
Sprig spoke, "We probably should get back to work."
"Good idea. Where to next?" Mabel asked.
"Who do we know that knows archery?" Sprig only knew about the slingshot.
"I don't know anyone," Mabel asked.
"Let's look over the suspect." Sprig said.
She got her journal ready, she could add the Amphibia justice process to her adventure log.
"First there, Wally. He kinda crazy."
Mabel thought about him, "He's that guy with that annoying instrument."
"He doesn't seem to have any archery." Sprig said, "But he does have a history of getting in trouble with the coppers."
Mabel rubbed her chin, thinking. Could it be him probably not.
"And then there Gunter." Sprig said.
Mabel needed a second to remember him, "The guy with the temper that can go big."
"We will have to figure out who can bring him over." He said.
"But who… someone strong."
"We could trick...huh?" He asked the pink frog stopped as the sound of glass breaking was heard. "Let's go investigate."
She ran with him.
Someone with terrible aim tried to kill the Mayor again, they left behind a crossbow maybe they could investigate the weapon. Mabel collected it.
Sprig playing the role of Captain Obvious, said, "It's a crossbow."
"Oh really I never would have guessed," Mabel said.
"Well Mabel, us folks in the country have these things called bows and..." Mabel interrupted him when it became clear he honestly thought she didn't know.
"Sprig, I was joking."
"Oh, what about the slime on it?" He asked, pointing at the sticky liquid on the thing handle.
"Now that is interesting." She wrote the details down in her journal.
"Why is it on the wrong side?" Sprig asked, noticing how it wasn't on the right hand.
"Do we know anyone with knowledge of weapons?"
"Wait a second this weapon is made out of wood, that means it was made by a wood smith, correct?" Sprig asked, wanting to answer his question.
"More than likely," Mabel said happily.
"We can ask Loggle, he should know about this. The wood feels funny." He said, licking the crossbow, "Ow splinter."
Mabel took his hand out. "Hey! That's evidence!"
"Yup, this is wood, by the way, ow again." He said. "To Loggle!" The two ran with all their might.
Loggle was busy trying to clean off a project he was working on. Mabel practically busted down the door. "The door was unlocked, why don't you just open the door like a normal person!?" He asked, a bit upset about having to go in to repair the door later today.
"No time -someone is trying to kill the mayor!" Mabel said, knowing what her reign meant to the people of Wartwood.
"That is horrible so you know who did it?" Loggle asked.
"No. But we found this and are hoping you can identify anything from it." Mabel handed over the crossbow to the wordsmith.
"Let me see." He looked over it, messing with his goggles looking over the top of the crossbow, left of the weapons, then the right of it, bottom front and back. "Hmm, this crossbow is made out of Olmium red ivy." He said, not realizing that meant nothing to the kids.
"And who is that?" Mabel asked as she grabbed Sprig by his shirt collar to keep him from running into something.
"I suppose you mean what, and it a tree outside of the vàlley near the northestmost exit of the valley."
"How does that help us?"
"Well, whoever got this crossbow did it out of town."
"That narrows things down a little. What else can you tell us about it? Like is it handed?"
"Well, the slight is slightly tilted so it suggests it belongs to the right-handed user but..." He paused, "It was...not made for a left-handed user...but it has hand slime from a left hand."
"What could have caused that?" Sprig asked.
"Well that is so incredibly remarkable...simple, they just use their left hand," Loggle said.
"So they're a dum dum?" Mabel asked.
"Probably, unless they had a good reason to use the wrong hand."
"Like an injury?" Mabel asked.
"Yes, is there anything else or…what?" He asked not sure how to get rid of them.
"Sorry. Sprig. Let's head out."
"To the Mayor!" They rushed there.
Polly was waiting holding most of the arrows shot Mrs. Croaker way. There were so many they were taller than she was, "This is so exhausting." Polly said.
Mabel was impressed, maybe they should let him win, nay. "Wow, this guy is relentless."
"Tell me about it, we need to go find him." Polly pointed out.
"We have. Few clues. Might be enough to nab him." Mabel said,
"Tell me, tell me, tell me." She demanded, "Do it or I will break Sprig." The young boy's eyes widen at the threat to his person.
She laughed and told her what they found.
"So the big guy is the only real suspect." Polly was strong but a two-tusk frog was much even for her.
"I guess so." Mabel wish Dipper was here.
Polly notices this, "What is it, Mabel?"
"Just someone we met today." He was strange.
"Someone we could find?"
"He should be at the hospital still. But if not..." She had a concern, he was an outsider so that meant he wouldn't be invested as a townie would.
"But if not...? Finish your sentence." Why was she being kept out of the loop, just because her body hadn't finished growing doesn't mean she had to be held back.
"He had an injury. On his shoulder. He couldn't use his right arm." If was a righty and had to use the wrong hand would explain why he keeps on missing.
"Seems suspect."
"I know." Mabel and Sprig wonder if they did a bad thing not having a copper watch over him.
"Well, you guys go off to the Doctor, wait no…" Polly said, realizing she just volunteered to stay behind despite wanting to leave.
They rushed on there. The old man left. This wasn't good
"Mabel, do you think he could have done it?" He asked, he was sure it was Gunter, but now changed his mind.
"Gunther is right-handed. He had no reason to use his left." Mabel plus he seems pretty good aim, so why keep missing?
"Agree, I could have sworn I saw him throw an arrow." He said, "So it likely he doesn't own a bow of any kind."
"We have it." They solve the case. Mabel was so gleeful, that she did it again.
"Okay let's gather the suspect and put them in a room for the big reveal."
"Can't argue with that," Mabel said.
Sprig somehow got the two suspects and was Wally in the mayor's guest room.
"Excellent my sidekick."
"Actually, Mabel you're the sidekick." He said, unaware that Mabel had been on the other side of the conversation not that long ago. "But I can work as your sidekick."
She narrowed her eyes at him.
"Anyways we got work to do." Sprig said, trying to change the conversation.
Mabel calms down and agrees.
"I got the mayor safely away," Polly said, the mayor had a hidden room to well keep them hidden, kinda give it away in the name.
"Now time for the reveal." Sprig said.
They stood in front of the suspects. "We knew it wasn't Wally when it was clear he was too stupid," Mabel said.
"I am not, I am perfectly capable of being a criminal mastermind," Wally said.
"Oh really now?" Polly asked.
"Don't you doubt it," Wally said.
Sprig had to be the voice of reason, "He really can't."
"Maybe." He said as Sprig answered him.
"And then there's Gunther."
"What?" Gunther asked, growing big again.
"Your temper is off the charts guy!" Mabel said, she wasn't perfect but she knew how dangerous that could be without super strength.
"No, it not." He roars, his voice so loud it sends Sprig flying back.
"Mabel, let's not get on his bad side. I like my head and its relationship with my neck."
"But he needs to know. Since I have a feeling he doesn't want to be this way." Mabel was a good judge of character and would be willing to try that.
"It's true I don't." He said. He said, trying to be presentable by placing his napkin on his lap, only showing he had no idea what he doing.
"So how about we get you some anger management classes?"
"I'll try it." The shape-shifting frog said, getting Mabel to smile at her good deed, she might be able to misbehave later thanks to this.
"And then there was Jonah, the guilty party." Sprig accused.
He feigned innocence with his fake mustache. "Why I have no idea why you would think that.
"Well, we know that the attempted murder weapon was held by someone's left hand, and your right arm is wounded."
"So I'm still right-handed. Now beat it before I beat you." He tried raising his right hand, said ow, and used his left hand to threaten the boy.
"Why I never!" He was getting sweaty.
"Exactly you never use your left hand, and by your left hand you are going to be caught." Sprig thought he did a clever one-liner, but he did not.
The old man tries to make a run for it.
"Mabel use boomerang." He said turning his hat backward at this.
Mabel pulled out the boomerang she liked to use as a hairpin and threw it. "Mabel, Mabel, Mabel." This causes the old frog to trip by force or because he is a million years old.
"Quick dog pile him." Gunther grabbed Wally's accordion and used it as a makeshift rope to hold him down.
"Great job everyone." Mabel praises them all.
"Good thing you keep your boomerang in your hair." Sprig said, he notice Wally looking at his accordion. "We can buy you a new one." They could put it on the Mayor's tap.
Gunther was so happy that he got to help.
"That will do Gunther, that will do." Hopefully, they wouldn't have to use Gunther's strength. It's not like he would be needed for some kind of massive war or something.
"Let's talk with MRs. Croaker, I have some questions." Polly said, helping the boys out of the town hall.
(might want to delete this last bit.)
"Me too." Mabel agrees.
"Lead the way, I feel we as her bodyguards should know some answers," Polly said
"You know it." Sprig said.
Mabel opened the door up wide giving more than enough space for the three mini bodyguards. One way or another they would get answers out of the mayor.
Mrs. Croaker was busy writing from a pile as high as she was tall.
"We found the would-be assassin. And we have a lot of questions." Mabel said, she could be serious, she could do this.
The Mayor kept a neutral face, "What would you like to learn about sweetie."
"Jonah." She said Mabel would not leave until she got an answer to this.
"What about him?" Mrs. Croaker said, giving another nonanswer. She was a good politician. She said looking over the paper she was taking. She did not want to talk about this.
"Why did he want you dead so badly he was shooting with an injury?" Mabel said.
"HE is crazy." She said she was not going to be easy to get to talk.
"And so am I. Crazy for knowledge!" Mabel said, thinking of what her family would do in this situation.
"Good for you." She said, grabbing another piece of paper and writing her signature on it.
Mabel swiped the paper.
"Great, that was supposed to lower the taxes on fruit for the rest of the year," she said completely annoyed that her bodyguard was getting in the way of her job.
"Then answer." Mabel was determined to get the answer.
"I fail to see why the relevant to you." What happened in Mrs. Croaker's past wasn't a Mabel problem.
"We are your bodyguards." Mabel reminded her.
"Yes, yes you are." She said, not giving much room for them to squirm.
"And we can't do our job properly without the information."
"You did pretty well as you did without knowing." She said, what did the human need to know anyway?
"Only because he'd gotten himself hurt." They were lucky that Gunther got him hurt like that beforehand.
"You're not wrong." She said, she was not convinced by how much she needed to know, but SAdie Croaker was able to give in when she heard a good point.
"You have enemies, ma'am. From some time ago." Sprig said, adding to the conversation.
"I think that much is obvious," Sadie said, the first honest answer she gave out. No harm in revealing the obvious.
"And that means you aren't the only one in danger," Polly added.
"Assuming Jonah wasn't working alone though." She said, sure that he didn't have any backup. Her statement made it clear she had some history with him.
"If you made one enemy like this you probably have more," Mabel said, her friends having her back.
"That is true." She said, don't let it be said that Sadie Croaker was not willing to give a devilfish its due.
"And that puts the town in danger," Mabel said.
Polly added, "And more importantly us."
She thought about that a good long while, "I guess you make a point." She took so long that the frog children fell asleep on her floor. "What do you need to know?" Mabel smiled at the Mayor's response.
"The truth," Mabel answered. Sadly the conversation went on so long that the two other frogs fell asleep.
Sprig mumbled in his sleep, "You can't handle the truth."
"What is wrong with that kid?" Sadie asked, making it clear she didn't like Sprig.
"If I made a list we'd be here all day." Mabel loved him but knew his flaws.
Sadie chuckles at this, "I like you, kid." She wondered if she should be honest or not. "Jonah and I used to be business rivals."
"In what business?"]
"Removal business," Croaker answered.
"I... I see." Mabel was uncomfortable with what she was thinking of.
"Hopefully this trash is the only thing that we would have to get rid of."
"How many were there?"
"I would say enough."

That is beautiful man.
No, why would it, the current version is good and frankly I rather they give us a blu ray boxset already.
