Chapter 1: The fox.
So…
Tonight marks my 30th day anniversary being reborn in the world of Pokémon.
With the winter snow already falling, I look at the setting sun in frustration at why I was reborn as a Pokémon in one of the worst time periods as a shiny vulpix!
Imagine my luck, being hunted down so some rich noble bastard can turn my fur into some scarf for a bitch he likes!
'Mental note, get revenge on the humans for later.'
I took a deep breath to calm my nerves, as the temperature in the general vicinity has heated up causing the nearby snow to melt into water.
No need to waste precious energy, after all.
I sighed, as I watched my breath become visible due to the cold.
And yes, you probably figured out that I'm not in modern Pokémon where the worst thing is poachers would catch and sell me to the highest bidder.
Nope, I'm in the Kanto samurai DLC… I figured that out the hard way which sucked ass.
Flashback no jutsu
Chapter 0.5: Trees are the real mvp.
Hi, my name is…fuck, I swear I remembered it a day ago.
…
well anyways, I got self inserted into a vulpix.
Learning to walk on four feet has been an experience and It's been 3 days since I woke up in this new world.
Gonna be honest, everything looks so surreal especially with the pidgeys and caterpie I walk past earlier.
I've been following this river downstream, hoping I could find civilization.
My time being a Pokemon has its ups and downs, not having opposable thumbs certainly counts as a down.
But testing out moves where I can spit fire and dash with quick attack was awesome!
For my food situation I managed to forage some berries for my main food source but I got lucky earlier and I managed to snipe a magikarp jumping out of the water!
I never felt so bad ass at using a modified ember move.
How did I modify it, you ask? Well, instead of multiple tiny fire projectiles I managed to compress the shots into 6 shot fire bullets!
It packs a punch but also has multiple shots that I have room for error and adjust my aim.
But back to the important object of interest which is the fresh kill.
At first, eating it raw looked disgusting but the smell of meat got the better of me and I had to bite down or it would be a waste.
…
It was delicious! I remembered halfway that I'm a fire type so I used ember to burn the now exposed flesh and bit down again.
It tasted even better! I need to get some more!
…
After some waiting by the river's edge, I had the bright idea to throw a berry into the shallow part of the river and recreate the jumping magikarp scenario.
There's even some rocks I can probably use to jump across I use quick attack!
'Hehe I'm not desperate enough to try it though.'
My plan is to use my mouth and throw it into the air while hitting it with my tail whip in one smooth move.
I played badminton, I know how to do it.
…
It is embarrassing to me that it took a couple of attempts but I finally hit the oran berry with my tail.
As the berry sails into the air, I prepare an ember and prepare myself to shoot for anything about to approach it.
…
A goldeen jumped into the air as I unleashed 6 fire bullets, hitting in the face.
…
"Gotcha bitch!" I screamed out.
…
With my belly satiated from a goldeen I roasted, I continue my walk downriver for my search for people and maybe a pokecenter for some healthcare.
Because it's free healthcare, why shouldn't I take advantage of it? And who honestly can say no to a shiny Vulpix giving you the puppy dog eyes? Not Nurse Joy that's who.
Walking along as I watched the golden brown leaves rain down was a beautiful sight to see in a lush forest.
But it's also worrying because that means winter is and being a wild pokemon in the winter season might be too much for me.
Especially since I don't have a head start on stockpiling some food.
Fuuck I really am hoping I can mooch off Nurse Joy and chansey.
…
After some more walking, I notice the trees around me are starting to get smaller and thinner.
A little more walking, I reached the clearing and was met by long grass.
With my smaller but more agile frame, I jump on a large rock to have a better clue of the surroundings.
…
Turns out this is a grassy plains and with my better eyesight, I can see a trail forming a line through the tall grass.
I jump down the rock, diving into the long grass and walk closer.
The grass can be a bit sharp in some places but I power through it and after a few minutes upon closer inspection, the grass was not trampled like the forest trails I used to get here but it was cut down by tools!
'People, here I come!'
Following the grass trail that eventually turned to a dirt path meaning this section was frequently used, I am eventually led to a sharp 90 degree turn into the tall grass.
'Hm, this tall grass might only be as tall as my waist if I was a human.' I thought in amusement.
I turn the corner and I am met with three young adults who looked like they came from a historical reenactment with katanas and the whole shebang.
All three of them are riding on a Ponyta with saddles, they are currently about 6 meters in front of me.
…
There was at least five seconds of silence on both sides thinking 'what do we do next.'
Taking the initiative, I took two steps back to gouge their reaction.
'I really hope these guys are cosplayers.'
Clop clop As their ponytas walked two steps forward.
I look at them again and gauged their reactions.
'oh shit, I thought there was a festival or something because of the kimonos and all that, but the red flag is the pokeballs on their belts look primitive as fuck!'
While the ponytas took two steps forward, I suddenly turned around and sprinted back to the forest running away like a zubat out of distortion.
'What the fuck, that phrase auto translated?' I shook my head and kept running.
"After it! I want it's hide as a present for my lady!" I heard from the voice behind me.
'Nice to know I can understand them, and fuck you too pal!' I thought to myself.
Moments later, I hear the distinct sound of pokeballs being released.
"Awooo." A howl sounded behind me.
I took a peek behind me and saw I am now being chased by a pair of growlithe, while the ponyta fuckboys are now slowly catching up on me.
Knowing that I'm gonna get caught if I don't do anything, I used quick attack to dash forward and stop the attack after a few seconds to conserve energy.
I see the forest up ahead, I took another look behind me and see the ponyta riders further behind but the growlithe are still on my ass.
'Fuck, if I can use it so can they.'
With me familiar with the path ahead, I decide to go on a Hail Mary and check the treetops for one of the deadliest things about tree cutting.
The Widowmakers.
Widowmakers are dead branches no longer connected to the tree but haven't fallen to the ground due to being tangled with other branches.
You combine this with them being hard to spot due to the leaves and falling from a great height means they killed a lot of people even with safety helmets.
With the season in the middle of fall it reduced the amount of leaves and factor in Rngesus loving me, I see one up ahead so I charge an ember shot.
Closer, until I'm in range.
…
A little bit closer, I have to thread the needle with quick attack or the growlithe will see it coming and dodge it.
…
And, fuck it YOLO! I screamed out as the fire bullet flew in the air.
…
CRASH!
We have impact baby! I quickly activated quick attack as it fell, further distancing me ahead.
The yelp I heard behind me means I either got one or scared the shit out of them.
A quick peek behind me and see a growlithe spinning its head like it has a hangover means I got one but it also means pokemon are tanky little shits!
I hear the sound of a pokeball returning a pokemon meaning I'm down to 4 pursuers.
'Fuck. if this goes on I'll get run down eventually, especially since I don't even have a foxhole to hide in.'
A quick look around, I thank Rngesus for his other blessing as I see the river rocks from earlier laid across the river making it possible if I timed my quick attacks right.
I use the move and jumped across.
Aand a ten point landing sucker! As I prepare for my next jump, I hear the voice behind me.
"Over there! It's trying to lose its scent by crossing the river!"
'Didn't think of that one, but sure let's go with that.' I thought, as I jumped and landed on another rock.
I prepare my ember shot and aim at the growlithe I was expecting close behind me as I see it jumping towards the first rock
With the growlithe not able to change directions mid-air, it was unable to evade all six shots hitting it in the face directly causing its momentum to slow down a bit making it fall to the water.
"Not even close, baby!" I shouted in celebration.
The glare it gave me as it surfaced trying to grip the rock caused me to flinch meaning this fucker has intimidate, I quickly turn around and made the last jump, landing on the other side of the river.
I hear a commotion behind me as the fuckboys run straight through the river because the ponyta are taller and won't have to struggle in the river current like us shorties.
'Oh sweet Rngesus, for all of those bad loot box duplicates you gave me I beg of you for another ass pull.'
I take a deep breath and prepare to imitate a TM move vulpix can learn, I channel the normal type energy I use with quick attack or tail whip, focussing into it my throat and.
"Leave me alone!" I shouted filled with my desire not to die.
I have no idea if it was the surprise of the sudden increase in volume or maybe the move's effectiveness but the Ponyta crossing the river flinched and one of them raised their front legs kicking into the air, bucking off an unsuspecting rider.
The humans aren't not too far off, they look pale and are stuttering out commands.
I took this chance and ran off quickly.
'Thank you Rngesus, because I am tired-' As something tackles me from the side.
I instinctively curl my front limbs to protect my neck as in the nick of time, something bites into my left wrist.
"Ack!" I screamed out.
After we stop rolling, I wait for an opening and use all three of my legs to kick off the attacker at the underbelly, getting a yelp from it as it is sent a few feet away.
Getting up quickly, I see it as a growlithe from before.
I circle around it as it does the same to me, I observe the growlithe and notice this one doesn't have the burn marks from the one I shot in the river making it this one I got with a tree branch from earlier.
It glared at me and I didn't flinch, meaning this one has flash fire or justify so no fire or dark type attacks.
The growlithe goes for a tackle, which I countered by using a tail whip, hitting it in the face and lowering its defense by stage one.
I backed off and we began circling each other again as the tempo resets.
"Why are you still chasing me?" I asked as I began formulating a plan.
'There I have an idea!' I thought.
"Master says hunt, so we hunt." He answered in certainty, as it circled me.
'Bingo, I'm in position.'
Getting an idea to force him to attack me, I prepare charging up a tail whip as a force multiplier.
"Master?" I asked with a laugh to fake my confidence.
"You mean that weak human who almost shit himself? You dogs are pathetic." I continued with the most snobby tone I could muster.
It snarled as this time instead of a tackle, it goes for a bite as it pounced at me.
'When will they learn?' I asked myself and dodged to the side.
'Don't jump if you can't change directions midair!' As I used the charged tailwhip into hitting the back of his head furthering his momentum face first into the tree behind me!
Minus two defense versus a tree is pretty simple math, the tree wins.
Seeing the growlithe struggle to get up, I bullshit a warning hoping it's too concussed to actually believe it.
"You only live because I want you to, pray we never meet again." I said to the growlithe before it loses consciousness.
I begin walking away.
After a few feet, I begin getting a slight limp as the adrenaline wears off the injury from my left paw makes itself known.
I hissed in pain. "This sucks." I said to myself while walking off to find a safe spot to rest.
End of flashback.
'Thankfully, light injuries like those close up after a few hours and stop being sore in the morning if you slept with a full stomach.'
With the sun no longer present as the darkness now dominates this side of the world, I stand up and start jumping tree to tree.
'It's time to find me some food after all.' I thought to myself as I land to another tree with practiced silence.
…
It took me a couple of hours of patrolling my territory but I got lucky tonight.
A rattata, a little bit smaller than I'm used to but my current theory is this one got kicked out of its nest for being the runt of the litter.
I take note of the direction it came from, because I might know where it lived.
The little rodent was walking warily, until its nose caught the scent of something with its eyes suddenly stuck to the ground due to finding some tubers to eat.
"Score." I heard rattata said in glee.
With its head lowered to quickly gorge on the plant, I pounce with my speed enhanced by quick attack.
The rattata didn't even suspect a thing, until I had it's neck between my jaws and I shook it around like a ragdoll.
I quickly disengage once I'm sure I crushed the windpipe to prevent any last ditch attacks from hitting me.
"Yeah, same." I said to the dying rattata.
With the rattata busy dying, I quickly double checked if anything heard the small commotion like a noctowl I normally would have to contend with at night.
After a few minutes of careful observation and with the rattata now dead, I eye the tubers he was eating and finished the meal since he barely got a bite.
No point in wasting free food after all.
I carry the rattata by the scruff of its neck and climb the back to the trees and make my way home.
The home I chose is a large tree with a hollowed trunk at the top, sporting large branches all over it giving me plenty of spots to eat and the best part about it is it is surrounded by other large trees making it a pseudo fortress a pokemon of my size and jump from branch to branch.
With being back home safe from danger, I started digging into the rattata going for the liver first.
…
With the important organs of the rattata gone, I move the body and bury it in the snow in a small gap between the roots of the tree I live on for storage.
After making a quick perimeter check, I go back into the trees to clean myself off the blood and gore because hygiene is important.
I enter the hollowed out trunk and go to sleep.
…
I wake up before the sun rises and do my morning routine of a quick stretch and patrol of my perimeter.
With the snow around my home undisturbed, I started heading off towards the river and Jumped from tree branch to tree branch.
My tree jumping route now ends due to the trees being more distanced and since I don't want to waste energy on moves, I landed and started walking.
Upon reaching the river, I am met with bustling activity of various pokemon evolution lines ranging from stantler, rattata, sentret and even Ivy the ivysaur mingling with each other while some drink water.
From what I can understand, Pokemon can be civilized and smart enough to talk to each other like people do.
But at the end of the day, predators can't live solely on berries unless they want to die of malnutrition.
Due to that fact, I've come to realize that I'll murder another sentient being for food and vice versa so it doesn't bother me as much.
But I digress.
With intelligence being a factor, this gave pokemon communities some rules that must be followed unless they want to be ganged up on by everyone.
With the lack of water predators in this area, the river will be treated as a neutral ground where hunting is discouraged but ponds and lakes are fair game.
One thing I learned is that other than the river truce, we are pretty much left to our own devices so even if humans encroach on the forest a single ursaring could be taken down and nobody else would care.
After drinking my fill, I sit on my favorite rock and activate drought to heat up the area, melting the snow around me in a small radius.
'The circle's a little bit bigger than the one I made a week ago, which is an improvement since it's winter too.'
I have multiple reasons why I do this even if it consumes some energy.
One, I get to practice on holding it longer and more practice means I can keep it activated with less energy consumption while expanding my reserves until I get to the point that it won't bother me much at all.
Two, the mingling pokemon will gather by me so I get to hear the gossip and daily news.
The only thing of note I learned was one of the rattata was looking for their missing child which I'm sure I was the reason behind the disappearance of especially with how she specified on how small and young he is, and that the local houndour pack will be making their rounds to this side of the woods.
The first one made me feel a bit bad, but then I remembered it's his fault for making so much noise in the night.
The second one was both worrying and a hassle because that means I would have to move my various food stashes up into the hollowed compartments of the trees because I buried the meat in the snow to preserve them, but with the dogs even having better sense of smell than me means they'll dig it out.
I do some stretching similar to a cat before getting up and turning off drought , getting 'awws' and surprised noises from pokemon near me from the lack of warmth.
Hauling ass to my turf, I start digging up my various stashes and move various meats above into the tree tops.
I'll leave some into a pile like that rattata from yesterday along with some more meat and hopefully they'll take it then leave.
Because, fun fact about claiming territory in the pokemon world, it has no drawn border unless you're an apex like persians and pokemon of similar weight class above where pokemon will respect what's yours.
And before you scoff at persians being nothing but large cats, the persians here are about the size of mountain lions that are very fast combined with versatile elemental attacks making them able to bully ursaring, arcanine and houndoom to not mess with them which led to a "I leave you alone vice versa"policy.
How do I know this you ask? Well, the noctowl said it to me and he doesn't have a reason to lie since our turf overlaps.
Back to the land I claimed though, I bullied a pidgeotto for this group of large trees because it was the perfect spot with one large tree surrounded by smaller trees in a ring with all of them having a hollowed space at the top.
The pidgeotto who lived here originally, lost to me because he can't do much direct damage while staying in range with gust attacks and if he tried to go melee I'll destroy him with fire fang but I can't damage him much since he'll fly up into the air to reset the tempo once I got a lock on.
I won out forcing him to relocate since every time he tried to land nearby I took potshots at him with ember shot.
A raticate heard about the pidgeotto being kicked out and tried to muscle me out but I abused my range attacks combined with my drought ability boosting my attacks.
She might have been faster and larger than me, but her lack of ranged options had me using quick attack to jump between tree to tree while peppering her with ember shots.
This cheesing continued until she had to back off when I got her badly burnt as I went on the offensive, chasing her down.
'Hold on a second, wasn't the kid I just ate came from that general direction?.' I thought to myself.
By the time I finished my food relocation, the sun had reached its peak meaning it was about 12 noon and I still needed to eat something and I'm not in the mood to thaw out my brunch which means off to the river I go.
Funny thing about the river truce is that fish pokemon like magikarp don't count but water types like squirtle, wooper and slowpokes are on the neutral side of what you can hunt.
I have no clear idea of the truce since everything I know is 3rd hand information.
Upon reaching the river, I see that the crowd from earlier dispersed and a single grass type is mainly mingling around which gives me a smile on my face.
I approached the exeggutor for our scheduled transaction of easy food.
"Hey, need some heat and sunlight?" I asked the coconut pokemon.
The large pokemon looked down at me in surprise and tilted its head. "You were gone when I came here, I'm guessing you moved your stash of food young Drought?"
I give him a nod and signal him to the thing since we've done this before. "Well you see, I am in need of a certain psychic pokemon to detect and raise up magikarp and goldeen since maintaining my gifts can be hungry work."
He sighed and muttered something about good practice. "Fine, but I can only catch you three fish pokemon for I would need to save my energy for teleportation later."
I activated drought and nodded, knowing he's also wary of the houndour pack passing by.
Especially with how shafted he is by typing combination.
He raises up three magikarp which I quickly shot down with ember shots getting two bullets for each of them.
"I am still amazed that you only needed 2 bullets instead of 4 to finish them off and how fast a shot you are, especially when I just raised them from the water." He commented.
I grunted and started tearing into one of the magikarp.
"You think you can teach me the move protect if you have free time?" I asked the psychic.
He nods. "I can, but I was expecting you to ask for my tutelage on psychic prowess your kind are known to flaunt."
I shrugged. "Never met any other of my kind to know and protect sounds like a better move that will help me survive than pretending to be a psychic type when I'm a fire type."
He huffed in amusement. "You are clearly wiser than most."
He stands to his full height and looks at me. "If we both survive this winter then I'll teach you protect, now turn off your ability for I must be off."
I did as he said and started packing up my two remaining magikarp.
Watching exeggutor's body glow with psychic power then disappear got me wondering if that was why other vulpix and ninetales are pretending to be psychics.
'I'll learn teleport just for the sake of showing up behind them and say "nothing personnel kid."
With me carrying excess food, I decided to splurge on energy and climbed a tree then used quick attack on my jump to another tree then repeated the process.
'I could copy Gran Torino and bounce around the trees if I master activating quick attack in short burst.' I thought to myself as I used a quick attack to boost my jump while turning it off mid-air.
With my usage of moves, I reached my home in a matter of minutes.
Speaking of moves, I decided to experiment if I could learn a move that vulpix can't learn by TMs or egg moves due to having fresh food combined with my stock.
I gather the normal energy into my left paw focusing on the claws, giving me the instruction manual fury swipes.
Fun fact: pokemon moves have a basic instruction manuals once discovered by a mon to make it easier.
Focusing the energy into the claws and folding the energy into itself like you would in forging a blade, I finally got the move I was after.
With a grin, I lightly trace my claw onto the magikarp as my claws sink into my like a hot knife through butter.
I, a motherfucking vulpix just used the move slash to cut up a magikarp into sushi.
"Mmm delicious." As I lick the claw and proceed to eat the fish.
But as awesome as it is, the move takes about three quick attacks worth of energy and I can only use quick attack about 30 times and half that if I plan to use ember for a fight.
Plus it being a newly learned move means I have to concentrate on using it until I get used to the feeling and it is very inefficient in energy consumption until I master it enough.
I'll have to do some serious training myself once spring hits when the food is plentiful.
Seeing the sun about to set, I headed back inside the tree and went to sleep.
An: I have no idea if I did a good job, this idea has been living rent free and Botan making a pokemon fic encouraged me to copy the trend.
also this is gonna be a power wank with enough bullshit to justify it.
Name: ?
Species: Kantoan Vulpix
Alias: Drought
Ability: drought - triggers sunny day, which causes a radius around the user to magnify fire type attacks and the sun.
Known moves:
Fire fang - covers the fangs with fire.
Ember shot - instead of multiple small fires sent towards an enemy, it is compressed into 6 shots giving it more stopping power.
Quick attack - activated before jumping or running while deactivating mid air, only used to gain momentum.
Fury swipes - not gonna be used lol
Slash - YES YES YES. Normal type energy folded together and compressed into an edge, very sharp.
Known rules.
River truce: In the absence of predatory water pokemon, the river will be treated as a neutral ground where no one is to hunt. Ponds, lakes don't count if there is a bigger source of water.
