Wallace stared at me.
Specifically, he directly stared at the Golden Magikarp I brought with me with my bare hands.
"I am not sure, dear Zale," he said with some skepticism. "While I agree with your decision to train a Magikarp, and a shiny one on top of that— which is incredibly rare to the point that the only person known for having one is Lance, it's still an incredibly tough choice for an aspiring trainer like you."
I frowned at his words, but I could easily understand why.
It is incredibly easy for a pokemon to get attached to their owner, and a Gyarados working together with a person who put their faith in it as a Magikarp was an invaluable and irreplaceable person for that Gyarados.
Well, while it was true that Magikarp were quite stupid and had the memory of a goldfish, but if you give them a chance and properly train them? You'll end up with one of your staunchest supporters. Wild Gyarados were almost impossible to tame, but one raised from a Magikarp was a completely different story.
Of course, it was never truly easy to train a pokemon, but a Magikarp had a penchant for feeling like a waste of time unmatched by any other Pokemon. You never really noticed the power it gained because all Magikarp can do is flop around uselessly on the ground, until it suddenly started shining and turned into the mean killing machine that was a Gyarados.
My Milotic was a clear example of pokemon like that, with how much she adored me.
Even though it really didn't feel that way while she was training– Milotic couldn't learn Mean Look, but I'd say mine came rather close to learning it, from the looks she was giving me. Looks like she was still rather sour with me for catching a Magikarp. Perhaps she was feeling threatened by the little fish.
Well, her fears weren't unfounded, as I did need to give a lot of attention to him at this stage.
"Not to mention," Wallace continued, "this means that you will have three pokemon before the start of your journey. Now, normally I would disapprove of it." I looked behind him, noticing my Milotic who was currently training with Wallace's Milotic. "There are a lot of things to consider before starting out for a journey: you need to properly manage your food, time, effort, money– you'll be surprised by how quickly you'll go through pokeballs and potions– and training. Now, admittedly most of these things aren't going to be a problem as long as I am sponsoring you, dear Zale. But that doesn't mean you can get away with not paying attention to how you start your journey!"
"I understand, Mr. Wallace," I nodded at my teacher.
He searched my face for any hint of insincerity, and seeing none, quickly reverted back to his usual flamboyant persona. "Ah, this is nothing to worry about, Zale~ As your sponsor, it is my duty to ensure that you are ready for your pokemon journey!"
"Hey Zale!" a familiar voice interrupted our conversation, "Come check this out! There are a lot of Feebas swimming around the shoreline!"
I smiled wryly while staring at Lisia, doing my best to ignore Wallace's knowing smile.
Of course, there was a very good reason for me to stare. Quite an impressive pair of reasons, in fact. Lisia had forgone her usual contest attire, and instead opted for a blue bikini instead, enhancing her curvy figure and showing off quite a bit of skin. Her bust jiggled hypnotically with every movement, drawing my eyes in.
I wrenched my eyes away from her chest, an apology ready but Lisia just looked at me with an amused expression on her face. Motioning at me to follow her, she turned around and walked back towards the shoreline, with a sway in her steps.
"Well, it's because there's a lot of Feebas in this area due to a large migration a few days ago." I explain while taking my step so I can walk beside her. "And usually, this is also a hunting time for local birds such as Pelipper and other bigger pokemon."
"Ohhh…!" Lisia nodded in amazement. "But isn't it bad for those Feebas? They're gonna be food for other pokemon, aren't they?"
"Well, that's just how nature works."
"Hmmmm… Like how nature worked when you met your Milotic~?" asked Lisia while she crouched on the edge of shore, watching a large group of Feebas swimming on the shoreline.
Her question caught me off guard, but at the same time, it doesn't seem wrong at all. As I followed by crouching beside her, as my eyes wandered to the moment where I met my starter, which still feels like yesterday. "... I guess so. Perhaps it's fate for both of us. Have I ever told you how I met Milotic as Feebas before?"
Hearing that, Lisia stood while turning her attention to me. "Nope~! Maybe you could tell me about it-Ah!"
Hearing her panicked cry, I immediately turned my head towards Lisia, only to get it smushed by something soft and warm. With a muffled cry, I tried to push my face away from them, only to find my hands sinking into something quite soft.
There was a soft moan from above me, and I froze because I immediately recognized this trope. As well as the soft balls in my hand. Slowly extricating my face from Lisia's bosom, I looked up only to see her beet red face, looking anywhere but me. A goofy grin starts spreading across my face, because holy shit I just touched her tits!
Then, I remembered exactly where the two of us were. Turning away from her, I stared at Wallace… who was looking at me with a scary smile on his face. Behind him, his Milotic had stopped training mine, and was staring at me with a gloomy aura surrounding it.
Oh.
I looked at Lisia for some support, but she was on her knees with her hands crossed and was that steam coming out of her head? Interesting reactions aside, I doubted that she'd be much help trying to stop Wallace from getting a shovel out once he processed what just happened.
I contemplated running away with my life intact, but before I could so much as take a step Wallace walked right up to me, grabbing a hold of my arm and dragging me away from his niece.
"Don't mind us, Lisia," he called out to her, "I will be returning Zale back to you after… a small conversation."
Fortunately, Wallace probably wasn't going to kill me.
"Miii!" came an outraged cry from my Milotic, as she also approached me with a murderous look on her face.
Unfortunately, I was pretty sure that Milotic had already thought of a place to dump my corpse.
Line Break
"Thank you for your purchase!" I bowed my head while thanking another customer who waved his hand while smiling.
Currently I am working in the shop after finishing my progress of training Magikarp. Honestly, it's really like what Wallace said, given the progress is happening at an absolutely abysmal pace, with my Magikarp having made zero progress climbing the waterfall.
But still, I have faith in him, believing that he would pull it sooner or later.
It's been six days ever since Wallace came and took me as his student. And the results have been pretty good for me and Milotic. According to Wallace, my overall trainer skills have improved remarkably, as he estimated that I am at the level of an experienced trainer with three or four badges, which is impressive for someone who hasn't done his first Gym battle yet.
Meanwhile Milotic also took a huge leap in her training under Wallace's Milotic, growing stronger while learning many tricks from the older Milotic, and also increasing her own arsenal by directly applying the stuff she learned, as well as practicing after sparring.
She is not only learning a new arsenal but also also diligently perfecting her current moves, honing each of them under older Milotic watch.
She's still a bit sour about Magikarp though, and the less I say about the beach incident the better.
But there's been decent progress, as she no longer ignored me and willingly talked a bit with her new comrade. Although she still largely ignored the smaller Magikarp, and Magikarp just spent most of his time staring at Milotic with a blank look on his face.
I swear I caught them staring at each other for nearly an hour for no apparent reason at all.
As for Lisia though, we cleared the misunderstanding. I was lucky that she's such a sweet person for not harboring any sort of grudge after that incident.
Well, aside from that, I also have something to talk about. Namely my boss, who's currently standing behind the counter with an unreadable expression on his face.
After our latest confrontation in pokemon battle with a predictably disastrous result, my boss hasn't talked much with me aside from simple orders during work time or other small things like when it was time for dinner..
It's an awkward situation between us, and honestly it feels suffocating. I suppose I'm already an adult inside, and we need to talk about this as an adult.
"Boss." I called him. "I think we need to talk–"
"There's nothing to talk about, lad." my boss cut in, as his eyes looked at me with a guilty look. "Look, I know that I am the one who started this childish conflict, and I realized that it's unbecoming for me as the older one…"
My boss took a deep breath, then bowed his head. "I am sorry, Zale. About everything that I have made you uncomfortable with for the past few days."
Well, this is kind of unexpected for me since I know that my boss is not the type who apologizes easily. But if he did so, then it must have affected him more than I thought.
"Zale… Would you like to hear a story from this old man?" my boss said while taking two bottles of water, which he then gave to me.
"Sure, I am all ears about it, boss." I nodded while taking the water bottle and opening it.
He nodded, and started to reminisce about the story of his life before opening this fishing shop.
He too was once an aspiring trainer, just like me.
But unlike me who was getting acknowledged by people higher up the tier lists, while obtaining an invaluable chance of getting sponsored, my boss had no such things.
Not because of a lack of effort, because he did try hard. But unfortunately, all his efforts were for naught.
And finally after attempting his last desperate effort which ended in nothing but another defeat, he gave up and returned to this town to open a fishing shop.
Raising a pokemon was hard.
While a trainer can go with a minimalistic lifestyle, and not spend much, you will always be mediocre unless you get lucky or get proactive. Those who stood on the top were the go-getters who invested every dollar they won into their pokemon teams.
But that is, frankly speaking, unsustainable. One big loss isn't just some setback to get over for these trainers, it's literally the opening of a huge fissure in front of them preventing them from getting back into the groove of things. It is all but career ending, and for every trainer who falls from grace there are twenty more waiting, hungry for their chance at the big leagues.
After that, Boss became a footnote and nobody was willing to give him a second chance as the man that lost once.
He even tried an alternative path where he tried to become a gym leader. But due to the fact that it takes a whole lot of time and effort in studies and also costs a large sum of money, he gave that dream up too.
When all your efforts become obsolete, the only option left is to give up on your childish ambitions and use what you've left to get a stable job and settle down in a town. And that is what boss did.
His glory days were left behind, just like countless trainers like him.
Until then, you're a shopkeeper, maybe a handyman, or a ferryman.
A forgettable face.
Everyone has a story.
And my boss' story didn't end with a happy ending.
"... My life had been a dull one. Making money for my daily needs. Hell, once I was done with the shop I went back home and watched the same old bullshit about pokemon battles, seeing how those trainers fought with their team with prestigious titles, under the glamorous stage to show off their prowess and reach for the title of a Pokemon Master. An unreachable ideal, which I too used to strive for before deciding to give up."
"... And that was before I met you, Zale."
I raised my eyebrow. "Me?"
He nodded in a thin smile. "Meeting you was an expected event for my old life, and I've enjoyed our time together even though a year hasn't passed yet. It feels like I just gained something that I never thought I would have in… The rest of my life… Yeah, something like that…"
My boss' voice became smaller as the words he was about to say floated away, and he looked away in embarrassment, unable to meet my eyes. While he didn't blatantly say it, I understood what my boss meant.
After all, I am an adult despite my regressed body.
Even though I had not reached an age where I should start thinking about such things, I could still understand how he felt right now.
"Don't worry boss," I said while patting his muscular back. "I will always remember what you've done to me when I was alone. After all, you are kind of already a father figure to me, you know?"
Hearing that, my boss didn't react immediately.
But I could feel his shoulders tremble, while faint sobs could be heard from him. I just rubbed his back while smiling, accompanying him until the store closed, then we walked back home together.
Line Break
"Dear Zale, while I did to support you in all your endeavors, I cannot help but feel doubts about your Magikarp's progression. And you only have one day left for your training before I leave alongside Lisia due to my postponed activities as a Gym leader and a pokemon coordinator…" I heard Wallace speaking behind me as he just watched my Magikarp, who was currently trying his best to climb the waterfall but to no avail.
Besides me, my own Milotic was also overseeing Magikarp's progress with a face full of skepticism. She looked at me while nudging my chin, asking me to agree with Wallace.
In response, I just shook my head. "I know that this seems impossible, Mr. Wallace. But I still believe that Magikarp would be able to pull this off." My answer got me a simultaneous despondent sigh from my own Milotic and Wallace, as they finally gave in.
Milotic, on the other hand, started gently biting my chin, chiding me for my decision. I smiled at her, while rubbing her chin in a caring manner, which she responded to by biting my chin harder.
Today was the ninth day of my attempt to teach Magikarp to climb the Waterfall. And it's also the last day of training before Wallace and Lisia have to go back to Sootopolis city.
I could understand why Wallace pressed me to take more focus on my own training as a pokemon trainer, given today was the last day. But on the other hand, I would still like to pay my attention towards Magikarp, who was diligently doing the same routine of climbing a waterfall for eight days without any complaint.
Seeing that I wouldn't budge, Wallace finally gave in while proceeding to leave. "Very well, but I want you to meet me on the beach this afternoon at four to review everything that you have learned from me. Milotic, please follow me. My dear MIlotic is waiting for you at the beach."
I can see Milotic's hesitation, as she's torn between following Wallace for her usual training, or staying in here with me. But, I knew that she needed this training, since this was her last day for her final training.
"You can go," I said to her, while caressing her head. "I will join you soon after this."
"Miiii…"
She was clearly disappointed, but finally relented as she followed Wallace leave but not before giving me a last side glance.
"Whi… Whis."
"I know, this sounds stupid to me too, Whiscash." I answered Whiscash's questionable looks on me. The catfish pokemon was part of Wallace's main team, and had been my temporary companion ever since I decided to train Magikarp to climb the waterfall. He was polite enough to not disturb me while I was training Magikarp in this place, and faithfully guarded me from wild pokemon or any disturbance during the training.
I may say that we are forging a good relationship, which is partly due to Whiscash's laid-back personality.
"Caaa…" Whiscash just gave me a look, but did not bother to continue it, as he went back to the water to chill, leaving me alone with Magikarp who was still trying to climb the Waterfall, before getting thrown back to the bottom part again.
While his progress was snail-like, Magikarp did actually make decent progress, as he was actually managing to climb one seventh part of the Waterfall before being pushed down. He even learned Waterfall during the process, even though he was barely able to use it efficiently.
Seeing his diligent effort made me not want to give up on him.
Not only because he's obeying me, but I know that my Magikarp is unusually smart for a species that is known for having the lowest level of intelligence. He knew what I wanted from him, which is why he kept doing this training without showing any sign of stopping.
But at the same time, I grew relentless as time passed too.
It was the last day before Wallace left, and Magikarp hadn't shown any sign of evolution at all.
While I know it's possible for him to reach it, I also wanted him to evolve before Wallace left, so that I could show him that I am worthy of being his student.
While I don't want to say it directly, I realized that with this level of progress, it will take a much longer time for my Magikarp to evolve.
"Karp…"
Because of my inner turmoil, I didn't realize that Magikarp had approached me. Which kind of startled me a bit.
"Sorry, didn't realize that you were there, pal."
"Karp… Karp…"
"Nah, don't worry about it pal," I reassured him. "I know that our progress is slow, but I believe that you can do it."
But instead of agreeing with me, Magikarp just stared at me with his large, goofy eyes, as if telling me that he didn't buy whatever I just said.
Realizing that, I finally sighed in acceptance.
My own Magikarp is just too smart to even get tricked with something like that.
"Yeah, honestly I am unsure if you can evolve before Mr. Wallace leaves tomorrow…" I said.
"Karp…"
"No, it's not your fault. It's just that I've been quite selfish for wanting you to evolve so that I can show that I am worthy of being Mr. Wallace's student." I said while deciding to sit on the edge of the riverbank, while caressing my Magikarp golden scales.
Both of us didn't talk too much after that, and merely enjoyed the leisure time of silence and the sound of rustling leaves.
"You know Magikarp," I began to talk once again. "There was a folk tale about a Gyarados who traveled the world in a quest to find his caretaker who raised him when he was still a Magikarp, just like you. The Gyarados had amazing adventures, meeting lots of people who feared him due to his reputation, but ended up thanking him for helping them during a shipwreck."
My Magikarp stared at me, seemingly immersing himself in my story.
"He also meets with a bunch of pokemon, some who try to help him, while others try to harm him on his journey. But the Gyarados overcame all courageously. After all, no matter what grand and terrifying adventures he went to, he never really cared about them. The only person he cared about was the person who cared for him at his weakest."
Magikarp's eyes shone in amazement.
"Unfortunately, the story ends with Gyarados never really finding him."
A gasp could be heard from my Magikarp.
"Turns out, his caretaker was already dead due to a disease. The caretaker didn't want Gyarados to find out about it, and chose to sail onboard to the sea, deciding to spend his feeble life on one more last voyage."
And then, there's silence.
"Nobody ever found his body, not even Gyarados himself. But even so, Gyarados still traveled across the world even if he wasn't able to meet his caretaker. Because he believed that one day, he will be reunited with him. That's the end of this tale."
Magikarp just stared at me with a look.
"Sorry for telling that, but it's kind of funny that our situation is a bit similar to that folktale," I said while chuckling sheepishly. "But of course nothing like that will happen to us, it's just an old tale that has been told by locals to assure the younger generation that Gyarados is not a scary creature if you take good care of them as a Magikarp, just like you and me right now. I am sure that you will be a thing of legends one day too. And when that happens, we can go on an adventure together, with Milotic as well."
Hearing that, my Magikarp suddenly did something that was unthinkable for me. He suddenly turned back and swam with a speed that I didn't know it's possible for a Magikarp.
Straight towards the Waterfall.
He blitzed straight through it!
He was climbing with such ferocity that I was worried that it would cause him harm.
But to my utter amazement, my Magikarp suddenly jumped through. Climbing the waterfall slowly with such incredible determination that I could not help but be amazed by his grit.
And before I knew it, my Magikarp finally did it. He was finally able to climb the waterfall, all by his own strength.
And the moment he reached the top, my Magikarp glowed.
His size quickly expanded, growing bigger.
… And he's still growing,
'… What a minute, is he even already surpassing the size of a normal Gyarados?'
At this point, I realized that he was actually growing bigger than he was supposed to be. Even Whiscash, who's been observed from afar, was stunned by the growth of my evolving pokemon.
When the evolution was done, I just stared in stunned silence at my fully evolved pokemon who looked right back at me in all of his gargantuan glory.
"Well, that was unexpected…"
"Cash…"
If I can translate that correctly, I believe that Whiscash is literally saying 'no shit'.
Line Break
After the excitement died down, I decided to ride my Red Gyarados alongside Wallace's Whiscash, looking for my Milotic. I spotted her, alongside Lisia who was looking at her training alongside Wallace's Milotic.
As Gyarados slowly approached them from above, I heard Wallace's voice.
"He sure is late today," Wallace mumbled while looking at his surroundings, trying to find me while not realizing that I was directly above him. As Gyarados finally reached the beach, the winds started to pick up. A huge silhouette covered a portion of the beach, making people look up above.
And that was when the screaming started.
People frantically scrambled upon seeing my Titanic Gyarados appearing from nowhere, fearing his intimidating size which dwarfed every single being in that sandy beach.
Wallace was not included among them, as he quickly released his whole team which I didn't know he bought as soon as he saw something amiss. Eyes fully focused after registering the appearance of an unknown Red Gyarados.
The first is a large walrus pokemon with a thick layer of blubber under its skin, which was primarily blue in color with thin white rings around his neck. There were two long, ivory tusks in his upper jaw, which were currently open wide as he growled in an aggressive manner. Walrein's yellow eyes shone dangerously as it stood in front of its trainer in a protective manner.
The second was a bipedal pokemon that appears to be a mixture of a pineapple and a duck. There was a green, sombrero-like growth on his head similar to a lily pad, where on the top of his head was a brown stem with a yellow spiky upper. His body was covered with yellow fur and had several zigzagging brown stripes. Ludicolo looked nervous after realizing what sort of threat stood in front of him, but he still stood protectively alongside his peers.
The third was a large jellyfish pokemon with a clear light blue body, and had two large, red orbs on either side and a smaller orb in the center. Tentacruel eyes looked at my Gyarados with a serious look on her face. Extending her numerous grayish tentacles, which repeatedly slammed in the sandy beach in a threatening manner. Her red orbs glowed with agitation.
Lastly, a similar draconic pokemon with a blue serpentine body covered in slightly overlapping scales. He was much smaller than my own Red Gyarados, but the strength emanating from his aura was no joke, as its mouth was gaping, bearing four pointed teeth threateningly. From his sheer aura alone, I realized that Wallace's Gyarados was probably the strongest pokemon in his team aside from his Milotic.
Meanwhile, Wallace's Milotic stood protectively in front of my own Milotic and Lisia, whose Altaria was hissing in a threatening manner.
Lisia's Altaria looked nervous, same as his own trainer, but he stood regally, flapping his fluffy wings to appear bigger than he was.
Honestly, the scene of everyone scrambling with fear and confusion was quite amusing. But well, I need to clear this misunderstanding sooner before they start attacking my newly evolved Gyarados and causing further problems, so I jumped out from Gyarados's head.
Which earned me various looks from the bystanders. Wallace included this time, as he stared at me and my Red Gyarados repeatedly in disbelief.
Apparently pokemon teams really did take after their trainers, for his team too stared at my Gyarados. Meanwhile, Gyarados just looked at Whiscash, who followed after me by jumping forward, waving to his comrades in an awkward manner.
Not far from Wallace, the same sentiments were shared with my own Milotic, Wallace's Milotic, and Lisia along with her Altaria, all stared at Gyarados with various expressions on their faces.
Though I noticed that my own Milotic had an odd glint in her eyes as she stared at us with jealousy.
Ah, damnit. I guess I really need to make up to her.
"... Zale, what-how-when-?"
"Well, just recently," I answered him back, while shrugging. "He evolved after managing to climb the entire Waterfall on his own, what I didn't expect was that he'd be this huge after evolving."
Wallace stared at me with a serious expression on his face. "Dear Zale, do you know what you just got? This Gyarados is not a normal Gyarados, it's an–"
"I know," I cut him off, stopping him from continuing his sentence. "He's an Alpha. I know."
This earned me even more looks from him. But I could ignore that for now, as I still cannot contain my own excitement with my second pokemon.
I just hit a jackpot with him!
"Zale," I turned my attention to an uncharacteristically serious Wallace as he stared at me with such intensity. "We have to talk."
Oh man… Again?
-To Be Continued-
Author Note: Another chapter down
Same rules as before, this fic is decided by roll and votes, so I can pick pokemon in Hoenn available later for vote.
The roll has been revealed, and the results are posted below. Finally after chapter 3 with his debut, Magikarp is finally evolved! Praise my dice roll which enabled him to evolve within the duration of Wallace stay!
Some lore and stuff are also updated, and this is my longest chapter yet so far so I was pretty satisfied with it.
Anyway, leave me some review for making me a happy guy.
Next update will be dropped soon, since I've already got the gist down as well.
Well, I guess that's it.
See you in the next chapter.
Additional Note:
I havent replying any review in ffn, so might as well giving some
Zyxis Ouroboros ReArchtypist: I already have a bunch of water pokemon I planned to add, but I may add that particular pokemon given I didn't think much about how many pokemon that Zale will catch. Of course it will not be around 100+ or so.
Darth Lelouch: Morelike he got bunch of water pokemon while being generalist, lol
13thDiscipleOfIna: He is more like the latter, traveling across the world while also being a pokemon trainer.
As for Grammar, I am writing in google docs and have bunch of beta which some of them are busy. I do give the chapter to them after finished with it.
